The dependence of the Casimir force on material properties is important for both future applications and to gain further insight on its fundamental aspects. Here we derive a general theory of the Casimir force for low-conducting compounds, or poor metals. For distances in the micrometer range, a large variety of such materials is described by universal equations containing a few parameters: the effective plasma frequency, dissipation rate of the free carriers, and electric permittivity in the infrared range. This theory can also describe inhomogeneous composite materials containing small regions with different conductivity. The Casimir force for mechanical systems involving samples made with compounds that have a metal-insulator transition shows an abrupt large temperature dependence of the Casimir force within the transition region, where metallic and dielectric phases coexist.
We consider the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction of an excited alkali-type atom which has a single (electric dipole) transition with a Chern insulator. The Chern insulator has a nonzero, time reversal symmetry breaking Hall conductance, leading to an additional contribution to the resonant Casimir-Polder interaction which depends on the coupling between the Hall conductance and the circular polarization state of the atomic transition. We find that the resonant Casimir-Polder shift can be significantly enhanced for de-excitation frequencies near values associated with the van Hove singularit…
The Casimir effect arises from the zero-point energy of particles in momentum space deformed by the existence of two parallel plates. For degrees of freedom on the lattice, its energy-momentum dispersion is determined so as to keep a periodicity within the Brillouin zone, so that its Casimir effect is modified. We study the properties of Casimir effect for lattice fermions, such as the naive fermion, Wilson fermion, and overlap fermion based on the Möbius domain-wall fermion formulation, in the $1+1$-, $2+1$-, and $3+1$-dimensional space-time with the periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditio…
This paper presents the results of calculating Casimir-Lifshitz friction force and heating rate of a small metal particle moving above a metal surface (thick plate) in the case of their different local temperatures. The case of normal nonmagnetic metals (Au) is considered. There is a strong interplay of temperatures, particle velocity and separation distance resulting in an anomalous direction of the heat flux between the bodies and a peak temperature dependence of the friction force at sufficiently low temperatures. In particular, a hot moving particle can additionally receive heat from a col…
We derive modified reflection coefficients for electromagnetic waves in the THz and far infrared range. The idea is based on hydrodynamic boundary conditions for metallic conduction electrons. The temperature-dependent part of the Casimir pressure between metal plates is evaluated. The results should shed light on the "thermal anomaly" where measurements deviate from the standard fluctuation electrodynamics for conducting metals.

It has been known that the Lifshitz theory of the Casimir force comes into conflict with the measurement data if the response of conduction electrons in metals to electromagnetic fluctuations is described by the well tested dissipative Drude model. The same theory is in a very good agreement with measurements of the Casimir force from graphene whose spatially nonlocal electromagnetic response is derived from the first principles of quantum electrodynamics. Here, we propose the spatially nonlocal phenomenological dielectric functions of metals which lead to nearly the same response, as the stan…
Casimir and electrostatic non-contact friction between two gold plates, and a gold tip and a gold plate, are calculated taking into account the contribution of the electrical double layer. It is shown that in an extreme-near field ($d<10$nm) the contribution from the electrical double layer leads to the enhancement of non-contact friction by many orders of magnitude in comparison to the result of the conventional theory without this contribution. Casimir and electrostatic friction dominate for short and large separations, respectively. The calculated electrostatic friction is in good agreement…
We extend the Lifshitz theory of the Casimir force to the case of two parallel magnetic metal plates possessing a spatially nonlocal dielectric response. By solving Maxwell equations in the configuration of an electromagnetic wave incident on the boundary plane of a magnetic metal semispace, the exact surface impedances are expressed in terms of its magnetic permeability and longitudinal and transverse dielectric functions. This allows application of the Lifshitz theory with reflection coefficients written via the surface impedances for calculation of the Casimir pressure between magnetic meta…
