There is presented an algorithm for computing the topological degree for a large class of polynomial mappings. As an application there is given an effective algebraic formula for the intersection number of a polynomial immersion M --> R^2m, where M is an m-dimensional algebraic manifold.
Let L be an algebraic set and let g : R^(n+1) \times L --> R^(2n) (n is even) be a polynomial mapping such that for each l in L there is r(l)>0 such that the mapping g_l = g(.,l) restricted to the sphere S^n(r) is an immersion for every 0<r<(l), so that the intersection number I(g_l|S^n(r)) is defined. Then the function which maps l in L to I(g_l|S^n(r)) is algebraically constructible.
For a polynomial mapping from S^{n-k} to the Stiefel manifold \widetilde{V}_k(\R^{n}), where n-k is even, there is presented an effective method of expressing the corresponding element of the homotopy group π_{n-k}\widetilde{V}_k(\R^{n})\simeq\Z in terms of signatures of quadratic forms. There is also given a method of computing the intersection number for a polynomial immersion from S^m to \R^{2m}.
We give a more detailed construction of the operation "intersection with a pseudo-divisor" in algebraic cobordism. Using arguments from Levine-Morel, Algebraic Cobordism, sections 6.2, 6.3, this gives a new proof of the contravariant functoriality of algebraic cobordism for l.c.i. morphisms of schemes of finite type over a field of characteristic zero.
For a separated scheme $X$ of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$ which admits an immersion into a proper smooth scheme over the truncated Witt ring $W_{n}$, we define the bounded derived category of locally finitely generated unit $F$-crystals with finite Tor-dimension on $X$ over $W_{n}$, independently of the choice of the immersion. Then we prove the anti-equivalence of this category with the bounded derived category of constructible étale sheaves of ${\mathbb Z}/{p^{n}{\mathbb Z}}$-modules with finite Tor dimension. We also discuss the relationship of $t$-structure…
Let G be a semisimple connected linear algebraic group over C, and X a wonderful G-variety. We study the possibility of realizing X as a closed subvariety of the projective space of a simple G-module. We describe the wonderful varieties having this property as well as the linear systems giving rise to such immersions. We also prove that any ample line bundle on a wonderful variety is very ample.
We construct immersions of trivalent abstract tropical curves in the Euclidean plane and embeddings of all abstract tropical curves in higher dimensional Euclidean space. Since not all curves have an embedding in the plane, we define the tropical crossing number of an abstract tropical curve to be the minimum number of self-intersections, counted with multiplicity, over all its immersions in the plane. We show that the tropical crossing number is at most quadratic in the number of edges and this bound is sharp. For curves of genus up to two, we systematically compute the crossing number. Final…
For every even number $n$, and every $n$-dimensional smooth hypersurface of $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d$, we compute the periods of all its $\frac{n}{2}$-dimensional complete intersection algebraic cycles. Furthermore, we determine the image of the given algebraic cycle under the cycle class map inside the De Rham cohomology group of the corresponding hypersurface in terms of its Griffiths basis and the polarization. As an application, we use this information to address variational Hodge conjecture for a non complete intersection algebraic cycle. We prove that the locus of general hypersur…
This paper applies the decomposition theorem in intersection cohomology to geometric invariant theory quotients, relating the intersection cohomology of the quotient to that of the semistable points for the action. Suppose a connected reductive complex algebraic group $G$ acts linearly on a complex projective variety $X$. We prove that if $1 \to N \to G \to H \to 1$ is a short exact sequence of connected reductive groups, and $X^{ss}$ the set of semistable points for the action of $N$ on $X$, then the $H$-equivariant intersection cohomology of the geometric invariant theory quotient $X^{ss}//N…
For an arbitrary complex algebraic variety which is not necessarily pure dimensional, the intersection complex can be defined as the direct sum of the Deligne-Goresky-MacPherson intersection complexes of each irreducible component. We give two axiomatic topological characterizations of the middle perversity direct sum intersection complex, one stratification dependent and the other stratification independent. To accomplish this, we show that this direct sum intersection complex can be constructed using Deligne's construction in the more general context of topologically stratified spaces. A con…
Let $X$ be a complex analytic manifold, $D\subset X$ a locally quasi-homogeneous free divisor, $E$ an integrable logarithmic connection with respect to $D$ and $L$ the local system of the horizontal sections of $E$ on $X-D$. In this paper we give an algebraic description in terms of $E$ of the regular holonomic D-module whose de Rham complex is the intersection complex associated with $L$. As an application, we perform some effective computations in the case of quasi-homogeneous plane curves.
For a smooth projective curve, the cycles of subordinate or, more generally, secant divisors to a given linear series are among some of the most studied objects in classical enumerative geometry. We consider the intersection of two such cycles corresponding to secant divisors of two different linear series on the same curve and investigate the validity of the enumerative formulas counting the number of divisors in the intersection. We study some interesting cases, with unexpected transversality properties, and establish a general method to verify when this intersection is empty.
A smooth intersection $Y$ of two quadrics in $\mathbb{P}^{2g+1}$ has Hodge level 1. We show that such varieties $Y$ have a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, a certain tautological subring of the Chow ring of powers of $Y$ injects into cohomology.
We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$, the fibers of which are Fano complete intersections of index 1 and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$, provided that $M\geq 2k+1$. The proof combines the traditional quadratic techniques of the method of maximal singularities with the linear techniques based on the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar. Certain related results are also considered.
We prove that a set $\mathcal X\subset \mathbb{C}^2,\ \#{\mathcal X}=mn,\ m\le n, $ is the set of intersection points of some two plane algebraic curves of degrees $m$ and $n,$ respectively, if and only if the following conditions are satisfied: a) Any curve of degree $m+n-3$ containing all but one point of $\mathcal X$, contains all of $\mathcal X,$ b) No curve of degree less than $m$ contains all of $\mathcal X.$ Let us mention that the conditions a) and b) in the "only if" direction of this result follow from the Ceyley-Bacharach and Noether theorems, respectively.
Let $Y$ be a smooth complete intersection of three quadrics, and assume the dimension of $Y$ is even. We show that $Y$ has a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) $Y$ displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition for double planes.
We present several approaches to equivariant intersection cohomology. We show that for a complete algebraic variety acted by a connected algebraic group $G$ it is a free module over $H^*(BG)$. The result follows from the decomposition theorem or from a weight argument.
We introduce the notion of resultant of two planar curves in the tropical geometry framework. We prove that the tropicalization of the algebraic resultant can be used to compute the stable intersection of two tropical plane curves. It is shown that, for two generic preimages of the curves to an algebraic framework, their intersection projects exactly onto the stable intersection of the curves. It is also given sufficient conditions for such a generality in terms of the residual coefficients of the algebraic coefficients of defining equations of the curves.
Let $Y$ be a smooth complete intersection of a quadric and a cubic in $\mathbb{P}^n$, with $n$ even. We show that $Y$ has a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen-Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) $Y$ displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow-Künneth decomposition for the resolution of singularities of a general nodal cubic hypersurface of even dimension.
Given a tropical divisor $D$ in the intersection of two tropical plane curves, we study when it can be realized as the tropicalization of the intersection of two algebraic curves, and give a sufficient condition. We show that under a certain condition involving a graph determined by these tropical curves, we can algorithmically find algebraic curves such that the tropicalization of their intersection is $D$.
The purpose of this article is to investigate the intersection cohomology for algebraic varieties with torus action. Given an algebraic torus $\mathbb{T}$, one of our result determines the intersection cohomology Betti numbers of any normal projective $\mathbb{T}$-variety admitting an algebraic curve as global quotient. The calculation is expressed in terms of a combinatorial description involving a divisorial fan which is the analogous of the defining fan of a toric variety. Our main tool to obtain this computation is a description of the decomposition theorem in this context.
Let X be a complex analytic manifold. Given a closed subspace $Y\subset X$ of pure codimension p>0, we consider the sheaf of local algebraic cohomology $H^p_{[Y]}({\cal O}_X)$, and ${\cal L}(Y,X)\subset H^p_{[Y]}({\cal O}_X)$ the intersection homology D_X-Module of Brylinski-Kashiwara. We give here an algebraic characterization of the spaces Y such that L(Y,X) coincides with $H^p_{[Y]}({\cal O}_X)$, in terms of Bernstein-Sato functional equations.
There is presented a method for computing the algebraic number of cross-cap singularities for mapping from m dimensional compact manifold with boundary M into R^(2m-1), m is odd. As an application, the intersection number of an immersion g from (m-1)-dimensional sphere to R^(2m-2) is described as the algebraic number of cross-caps of a mapping naturally associated with g.
We show that the etale cohomology (with compact supports) of an algebraic variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field has the canonical weight filtration $W$, and prove that the middle weight part of the cohomology with compact supports of $X$ is a subspace of the intersection cohomology of a compactification $X'$ of X, or equivalently, the middle weight part of the (so-called) Borel-Moore homology of $X$ is a quotient of the intersection cohomology of $X'$. We are informed that this has been shown by A. Weber in the case $X$ is proper (and $k=\bC$) using a theorem of G. Barthel, J.-P. Bras…
We consider the problem of estimating the intersection multiplicity between an algebraic variety and a Pfaffian foliation, at every point of the variety. We show that this multiplicity can be majorized at every point $p$ by the local algebraic multiplicity at $p$ of a suitably constructed algebraic cycle. The construction is based on Gabrielov's complex analog of the Rolle-Khovanskii lemma. We illustrate the main result by deriving similar uniform estimates for the complexity of the Milnor fiber of a deformation (under a smoothness assumption) and for the order of contact between an algebraic …
We present a purely algebraic proof of the commutativity of the operation defined by intersection with divisors on the Chow group of a local Noetherian domain.
We prove that if X, X' are closed subschemes of a torus T over a non-Archimedean field K, of complementary codimension and with finite intersection, then the stable tropical intersection along a (possibly positive-dimensional, possibly unbounded) connected component C of Trop(X) \cap Trop(X') lifts to algebraic intersection points, with multiplicities. This theorem requires potentially passing to a suitable toric variety X(Δ) and its associated extended tropicalization N_R(Δ); the algebraic intersection points lifting the stable tropical intersection will have tropicalization somewhere in the …
We describe the intersection complex of any perversity of a toric variety completely in terms of the associated fan. It is described by a finite complex of finite dimensional graded vector spaces which we call graded exterior modules. The intersection complexes of the middle perversity are treated in the second part following this article.
We give the construction of a class of multiple locally complete intersection structures on a smooth algebraic variety as support. This class contains the structures defined locally by equations of the form $x^n=0$, $y^2=0$, $z=0, >..., u=0$.
We investigate the viability of defining an intersection product on algebraic cycles on a singular algebraic variety by pushing forward intersection products formed on a resolution of singularities. For varieties with resolutions having a certain structure (including all varieties over a field of characteristic zero), we obtain a stratification which reflects the geometry of the centers and the exceptional divisors. This stratification is sufficiently fine that divisors can be intersected with $r$-cycles (for $r \geq 1$), and 2-cycles can be intersected on a fourfold, provided their incidences…
In our previous work, we provided an algebraic proof of the Zinger's comparison formula between genus one Gromov-Witten invariants and reduced invariants when the target space is a complete intersection of dimension two or three in a projective space. In this paper, we extend the result in any dimensions and for descendant invariants.
Let $\Bbbk$ be a field of characteristic 0. Let $X$ be a smooth complete intersection over $k$ of dimension $n-k$ in the projective space $\mathbf{P}^n_{k}$, for given positive integers $n$ and $k$. When $k=\mathbb{C}$, Terasoma (\cite{Ter90}) and Konno (\cite{Ko91}) provided an explicit representative (in terms of differential forms) of a basis for the primitive middle-dimensional algebraic de Rham cohomology $H_{dR,\operatorname{prim}}^{n-k}(X;\mathbb{C})$. Later Dimca constructed another explicit representative of a basis of $H_{dR,\operatorname{prim}}^{n-k}(X;\mathbb{C})$ in \cite{Dim95}. …

Following Newton, Ivory and Arnold, we study the Newtonian potentials of algebraic hypersurfaces in $R^n$. The ramification of (analytic continuations of) these potential depends on a monodromy group, which can be considered as a proper subgroup of the local monodromy group of a complete intersection (acting on a {\em twisted} vanishing homology group if $n$ is odd). Studying this monodromy group we prove, in particular, that the attraction force of a hyperbolic layer of degree $d$ in $R^n$ coincides with appropriate algebraic vector-functions everywhere outside the attracting surface if $n=2$…
We establish the Airy curve case of a conjecture of Gukov and Sułkowski by reducing to Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde Virasoro constraints satisfied by the intersection numbers on moduli spaces of algebraic curves.
Let $f:X-->Y$ be a map of algebraic varieties. Barthel, Brasselet, Fieseler, Gabber and Kaup have shown that there exists a homomorphism of intersection homology groups $f^*:IH^*(Y)-->IH^*(X)$ compatible with the induced homomorphism on cohomology. The crucial point in the argument is reduction to the finite characteristic. We give an alternative and short proof of the existence of a homomorphism $f^*$. Our construction is an easy application of the Decomposition Theorem.
The algebraic Hodge theorem was proved in a beautiful 1987 paper by Deligne and Illusie, using positive characteristic methods. We argue that the central algebraic object of their proof can be understood geometrically as a line bundle on a derived scheme. In this interpretation, the Deligne-Illusie result can be seen as a proof that this line bundle is trivial under certain assumptions. We give a criterion for the triviality of this line bundle in a more general context. The proof uses techniques from derived algebraic geometry, specifically arguments which show the formality of certain derive…
In this paper, an intersection theory for generic differential polynomials is presented. The intersection of an irreducible differential variety of dimension $d$ and order $h$ with a generic differential hypersurface of order $s$ is shown to be an irreducible variety of dimension $d-1$ and order $h+s$. As a consequence, the dimension conjecture for generic differential polynomials is proved. Based on the intersection theory, the Chow form for an irreducible differential variety is defined and most of the properties of the Chow form in the algebraic case are established for its differential cou…
In the present paper, we focus on a weighted version of the Bounded Negativity Conjecture which predicts that for every smooth projective surface in characteristic zero the self-intersection numbers of reduced and irreducible curves are bounded from below by a global constant. We gather evidence for this conjecture by showing various bounds on the self-intersection number of curves in an algebraic surface. We focus our attention on blow-ups of algebraic surfaces, which have so far been neglected.
In the previous paper, we describe the intersection complexes of a toric variety as a finite complex of graded exterior modules on the associated fan. In this second part, we rewrite it explicitly by the barycentric subdivision of the fan. We get the decomposition theorem of the intersection homologies for a barycentric subdivision of a fan in the case of middle perversity. We get also the diagonal theorems I and II. These theorems give a new proof of the g-comnjecture on a simplicial polytope which was proved by R. Stanley.
The paper is a part of our program to build up a theory of couting immersed nodal curve on algebraic surfaces, as an enumerative Riemann-Roch theory (outlined in math.AG/0405113). In this paper, we discuss the excess intersection theory of the so-called type two exceptional curves, which plays the analogous role as the "index of speciality" (h^2) in the classical surface Riemann-Roch formula. We show that the algebraic family Seiberg-Witten theory of type I exceptional curves can be generalized to the theory of type II exceptional curves when the family moduli spaces are not regular of the exp…
We present an approach over arbitrary fields to bound the degree of intersection of families of varieties in terms of how these concentrate on algebraic sets of smaller codimension. This provides in particular a substantial extension of the method of degree-reduction that enables it to deal efficiently with higher-dimensional problems and also with high-degree varieties. We obtain sharp bounds that are new even in the case of lines in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and show that besides doubly-ruled varieties, only a certain rare family of varieties can be relevant for the study of incidence questions.
We construct an invariant of parametrized generic real algebraic surfaces in RP^3 which generalizes the Brown invariant of immersed surfaces from smooth topology. The invariant is constructed using the self intersection, which is a real algebraic curve with points of three local characters: the intersection of two real sheets, the intersection of two complex conjugate sheets or a Whitney umbrella. The Brown invariant was expressed through a self linking number of the self intersection by Kirby and Melvin. We extend the definition of this self linking number to the case of parametrized generic …
We construct virtual fundamental classes in all intersection theories including Chow theory, K-theory and algebraic cobordism for quasi-projective Deligne-Mumford stacks with perfect obstruction theories and prove the virtual pullback formula, the virtual torus localization formula and cosection localization principle.
Let $G$ be a semiabelian variety and $C$ a curve in $G$ that is not contained in a proper algebraic subgroup of $G$. In this situation, conjectures of Pink and Zilber imply that there are at most finitely many points contained in the so-called unlikely intersections of $C$ with subgroups of codimension at least $2$. In this note, we establish this assertion for general semiabelian varieties over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$. This extends results of Maurin and Bombieri, Habegger, Masser, and Zannier in the toric case as well as Habegger and Pila in the abelian case.
We provide a notion of algebraic rational cell with applications to intersection theory on singular varieties with torus action. Based on this notion, we study the algebraic analogue of $\mathbb{Q}$-filtrable varieties: algebraic varieties where a torus acts with isolated fixed points, such that the associated Bialynicki-Birula decomposition consists of algebraic rational cells. We show that the rational equivariant Chow group of any $\mathbb{Q}$-filtrable variety is freely generated by the cell closures. We apply this result to group embeddings, and more generally to spherical varieties. This…
We present a definition of intersection homology for real algebraic varieties that is analogous to Goresky and MacPherson's original definition of intersection homology for complex varieties.
In a previous paper the authors develop an intersection theory for subspaces of rational functions on an algebraic variety X over complex numbers. In this note, we first extend this intersection theory to an arbitrary algebraically closed ground field. Secondly we give an isomorphism between the group of b-divisors on the birational class of X and the Grothendieck group of the semigroup of subspaces of rational functions on X. The constructed isomorphism moreover preserves the intersection numbers. This provides an alternative approach to b-divisors and their intersection theory.
We describe a method of computing equivariant and ordinary intersection cohomology of certain varieties with actions of algebraic tori, in terms of structure of the zero- and one-dimensional orbits. The class of varieties to which our formula applies includes Schubert varieties in flag varieties and affine flag varieties. We also prove a monotonicity result on local intersection cohomology stalks.
A. Zinger defined reduced Gromov-Witten (GW) invariants and proved a comparison theorem of standard and reduced genus one GW invariants for every symplectic manifold (with all dimension). H. -L. Chang and J. Li provided a proof of the comparison theorem for quintic Calabi-Yau 3-folds in algebraic geometry by taking a definition of reduced invariants as an Euler number of certain vector bundle. T. Coates and C. Manolache have defined reduced GW invariants in algebraic geometry following the idea by Vakil and Zinger and proved the comparison theorem for every Calabi-Yau threefold. In this paper,…
We show that under favorable circumstances, one can construct an intersection product on the Chow groups of a tensor triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$ (as defined by Balmer) which generalizes the usual intersection product on a non-singular algebraic variety. Our construction depends on the choice of an algebraic model for $\mathcal{T}$ (a tensor Frobenius pair), which has to satisfy a $\mathrm{K}$-theoretic regularity condition analogous to the Gersten conjecture from algebraic geometry. In this situation, we are able to prove an analogue of the Bloch formula and use it to define an interse…
We study intersection theory for differential algebraic varieties. Particularly, we study families of differential hypersurface sections of arbitrary affine differential algebraic varieties over a differential field. We prove the differential analogue of Bertini's theorem, namely that for an arbitrary geometrically irreducible differential algebraic variety which is not an algebraic curve, generic hypersurface sections are geometrically irreducible and codimension one. Surprisingly, we prove a stronger result in the case that the order of the differential hypersurface is at least one; namely t…
