In this paper we present a new Good Characterization of maximum genus of a graph which makes a common generalization of the works of Xuong, Liu, and Fu et al. Based on this, we find a new polynomially bounded algorithm to find the maximum genus of a graph.
In a closed 2-cell embedding of a graph each face is homeomorphic to an open disk and is bounded by a cycle in the graph. The Orientable Strong Embedding Conjecture says that every 2-connected graph has a closed 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface. This implies both the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture and the Strong Embedding Conjecture. In this paper we prove that every 2-connected projective-planar cubic graph has a closed 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface. The three main ingredients of the proof are (1) a surgical method to convert nonorientable embeddings into orientable em…
We define and study embeddings of cycles in finite affine and projective planes. We show that for all $k$, $3\le k\le q^2$, a $k$-cycle can be embedded in any affine plane of order $q$. We also prove a similar result for finite projective planes: for all $k$, $3\le k\le q^2+q+1$, a $k$-cycle can be embedded in any projective plane of order $q$.
In this article, we give a positive answer to the cycle double cover conjecture. Ones who are mainly interesting in the proof of the conjecture can only read Sections 2 and 4.
Graph embedding is a powerful method in parallel computing that maps a guest network $G$ into a host network $H$. The performance of an embedding can be evaluated by certain parameters, such as the dilation, the edge congestion and the wirelength. In this manuscript, we obtain the wirelength (exact and minimum) of embedding complete multi-partite graphs into Cartesian product of paths and cycles, which include $n$-cube, $n$-dimensional mesh (grid), $n$-dimensional cylinder and $n$-dimensional torus, etc., as the subfamilies.
The $book$ $embedding$ of a graph $G$ is to place the vertices of $G$ on the spine and draw the edges to the pages so that the edges in the same page do not cross with each other. The book embedding is $matching$ if the pages have maximum degree $1$. The $matching$ $book$ $thickness$ is the minimum number of pages in which graphs can be matching book embedded. In this paper, we show that the matching book thickness of the Cartesian product $K_p\Box C_q$of a complete graph $K_p$ and a cycle $C_q$ is equal to $Δ(K_p\Box C_q)+1$.
Kelly, Kuehn and Osthus conjectured that for any l>3 and the smallest number k>2 that does not divide l, any large enough oriented graph G with minimum indegree and minimum outdegree at least \lfloor |V(G)|/k\rfloor +1 contains a directed cycle of length l. We prove this conjecture asymptotically for the case when l is large enough compared to k and k>6. The case when k<7 was already settled asymptotically by Kelly, Kuehn and Osthus.
Though embedding problems have been considered for several regular graphs, it is still an open problem for hypercube into torus. In the paper, we prove the conjecture mathematically and obtain the minimum wirelength of embedding for hypercube into Cartesian product of paths and/or cycles. In addition, we explain that Gray code embedding is an optimal strategy in such embedding problems.
A graph $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding if $G$ can be embedded into a $k$-page book. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ has a $k$-page book embedding is the book thickness of $G$, denoted $bt(G)$. Most of the work on this subject has been done for unoriented graphs and oriented acyclic graphs (no directed cycles). In this work we discuss oriented graphs $\overrightarrow{D}$ containing directed cycles by using oriented book embeddings and oriented book thickness, $obt(\overrightarrow{D})$. To characterize $\overrightarrow{D}$ such that $obt(\overrightarrow{D}) = k$, we define the class $\mathcal{M…
Although there are very algorithms for embedding graphs on unbounded grids, only few results on embedding or drawing graphs on restricted grids has been published. In this work, we consider the problem of embedding paths and cycles on grid graphs. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of cycles of given length $k$ and paths of given length $k$ between two given vertices in $n$-vertex rectangular grid graphs and introduce two algorithms with running times O$(k)$ and O$(k^2)$ for finding respectively such cycles and paths. Also, we extend our results to $m\times n\tim…
Consider factorizations into transpositions of an n-cycle in the symmetric group S_n. To every such factorization we assign a monomial in variables w_{ij} that retains the transpositions used, but forgets their order. Summing over all possible factorizations of n-cycles we obtain a polynomial that happens to admit a closed expression. From this expression we deduce a formula for the number of 1-faced embeddings of a given graph.
A book embedding of a complete graph is a spatial embedding whose planar projection has the vertices located along a circle, consecutive vertices are connected by arcs of the circle, and the projections of the remaining "interior" edges in the graph are straight line segments between the points on the circle representing the appropriate vertices. A random embedding of a complete graph can be generated by randomly assigning relative heights to these interior edges. We study a family of two-component links that arise as the realizations of pairs of disjoint cycles in these random embeddings of g…
In the symmetric group on a set of size 2n, let P_{2n} denote the conjugacy class of involutions with no fixed points (equivalently, we refer to these as ``pairings'', since each disjoint cycle has length 2). Harer and Zagier explicitly determined the distribution of the number of disjoint cycles in the product of a fixed cycle of length 2n and the elements of P_{2n}. Their famous result has been reproved many times, primarily because it can be interpreted as the genus distribution for 2-cell embeddings in an orientable surface,of a graph with a single vertex attached to n loops. In this paper…
An ordinary voltage graph embedding of a graph in a surface encodes a certain kind of highly symmetric covering space of that surface. Given an ordinary voltage graph embedding of a graph $G$ in a surface with voltage group $A$ and a connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, we define special subgroups of $A$ that depend on $H$ and show how cosets of these groups in $A$ can be used to find topological information concerning the derived embedding without constructing the whole covering space. Our strongest theorems treat the case that $H$ is a cycle and the fiber over $H$ is a disjoint union of cycles wit…
We use a randomised embedding method to prove that for all α>0 any sufficiently large oriented graph G with minimum in-degree and out-degree δ^+(G),δ^-(G)\geq (3/8+α)|G| contains every possible orientation of a Hamilton cycle. This confirms a conjecture of Häggkvist and Thomason.
We prove a homology vanishing theorem for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic result of Bochner on manifolds \cite{Bochner}. Specifically, we prove that if a graph has positive curvature at every vertex, then its first homology group is trivial, where the notion of homology that we use for graphs is the path homology developed by Grigor'yan, Lin, Muranov, and Yau \cite{Grigoryan2}. %\Hm{added the fundamental group curvature relation} We moreover prove that the fundamental group is finite for graphs with positive Bakry-Émery curvature, analogous to a classic resul…
A Hamiltonian embedding is an embedding of a graph $G$ such that the boundary of each face is a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. It is shown that the hypercube graph $Q_n$ admits such an embedding on an orientable surface when $n$ is a power of 2. Basic necessary conditions on Hamiltonian embeddings for $Q_n$ and conjectures are made about other values of $n$.
We obtain a criterion for approximability by embeddings of piecewise linear maps of a circle to the plane, analogous to the one proved by Minc for maps of a segment to the plane. Theorem. Let S be a triangulation of a circle with s vertices. Let f be a simplicial map of the graph S to the plane. The map f is approximable by embeddings if and only if for each i=0,...,s the i-th derivative of the map f (defined by Minc) neither contains transversal self-intersections nor is the standard winding of degree greater than 1. We deduce from the Minc result the completeness of the van Kampen obstructio…
Graph embedding is the major technique which is used to map guest graph into host graph. In architecture simulation, graph embedding is said to be one of the strongest application for the execution of parallel algorithm and simulation of various interconnection networks \cite{Pa99}. In this paper, we have embedded circulant networks into star of cycle and folded hypercube into cycle-of-ladders and compute its exact wirelength. Further we have discussed the embedding parameters in VLSI Layout.
Sachs and Conway-Gordon used linking number and a beautiful counting argument to prove that every graph in the Petersen family is intrinsically linked (have a pair of disjoint cycles that form a nonsplit link in every spatial embedding) and thus each family member has no flat spatial embedding (an embedding for which every cycle bounds a disk with interior disjoint from the graph). We give an alternate proof that every Petersen family graph has no flat embedding by applying Böhme's Lemma and the Jordan-Brouwer Separation Theorem.
A map $f: K \to \mathbb{R}^d$ of a simplicial complex is an almost embedding if $f(σ) \cap f(τ) = \varnothing$ whenever $σ, τ$ are disjoint simplices of $K$. Fix integers $d,k \geqslant 2$ such that $k+2 \leqslant d \leqslant\frac{3k}2+1$. Assuming that the "preimage of a cycle is a cycle" we prove $\mathbf{NP}$-hardness of the algorithmic problem of recognition of almost embeddability of finite $k$-dimensional complexes in $\mathbb{R}^d$. Assuming that $\mathbf{P} \ne \mathbf{NP}$ (and that the "preimage of a cycle is a cycle") we prove that the embedding obstruction is incomplete for $k$-dim…
We conjecture that every oriented graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ^+ (G) , δ^- (G) \geq 5n/12$ contains the square of a Hamilton cycle. We also give a conjectural bound on the minimum semidegree which ensures a perfect packing of transitive triangles in an oriented graph. A link between Ramsey numbers and perfect packings of transitive tournaments is also considered.
We exhibit several families of planar graphs that are minor-minimal intrinsically spherical $3$-linked. A graph is intrinsically spherical 3-linked if it is planar graph that has, in every spherical embedding, a non-split 3-link consisting of two disjoint cycles ($S^1$s) and two disjoint vertices ($S^0$), or a cycle and two pairs of disjoint vertices. We conjecture that $K_4 \dot{\bigcup} K_4$, $K_{3,2} \dot{\bigcup} K_{3,2}$, and $K_4 \dot{\bigcup} K_{3,2}$ form the complete set of minor-minimal intrinsically type I spherical 3-linked graphs (that is, in every spherical embedding, have a nons…
We consider questions related to the existence of spanning trees in graphs with the property that after the removal of any path in the tree the graph remains connected. We show that, for planar graphs, the existence of trees with this property is closely related to the Hamiltonicity of the graph. For graphs with a 1- or 2-vertex cut, the Hamiltonicity also plays a central role. We also deal with spanning trees satisfying this property restricted to paths arising from fundamental cycles. The cycle space of a graph can be generated by the fundamental cycles of any spanning tree, and Tutte showed…
We explore the well-known Jaeger's directed cycle double cover conjecture which is equivalent to the assertion that every cubic bridgeless graph has an embedding on a closed orientable surface with no dual loop. We associate each cubic graph G with a novel object H that we call a "hexagon graph"; perfect matchings of H describe all embeddings of G on closed orientable surfaces. The study of hexagon graphs leads us to define a new class of graphs that we call "lean fork-graphs". Fork graphs are cubic bridgeless graphs obtained from a triangle by sequentially connecting fork-type graphs and perf…
The conjecture of Bollobás and Komlós, recently proved by Böttcher, Schacht, and Taraz [Math. Ann. 343(1), 175--205, 2009], implies that for any $γ>0$, every balanced bipartite graph on $2n$ vertices with bounded degree and sublinear bandwidth appears as a subgraph of any $2n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree $(1+γ)n$, provided that $n$ is sufficiently large. We show that this threshold can be cut in half to an essentially best-possible minimum degree of $(\frac12+γ)n$ when we have the additional structural information of the host graph $G$ being balanced bipartite. This complements result…
The edge-distinguishing chromatic number (EDCN) of a graph $G$ is the minimum positive integer $k$ such that there exists a vertex coloring $c:V(G)\to\{1,2,\dotsc,k\}$ whose induced edge labels $\{c(u),c(v)\}$ are distinct for all edges $uv$. Previous work has determined the EDCN of paths, cycles, and spider graphs with three legs. In this paper, we determine the EDCN of petal graphs with two petals and a loop, cycles with one chord, and spider graphs with four legs. These are achieved by graph embedding into looped complete graphs.
In 2009 Chmutov introduced the idea of partial duality for embeddings of graphs in surfaces. We discuss some alternative descriptions of partial duality, which demonstrate the symmetry between vertices and faces. One is in terms of band decompositions, and the other is in terms of the gem (graph-encoded map) representation of an embedding. We then use these to investigate when a partial dual is a closed 2-cell embedding, in which every face is bounded by a cycle in the graph. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for a partial dual to be closed 2-cell, and also a sufficient condition …
A "folklore conjecture, probably due to Tutte" (as described in [P.D. Seymour, Sums of circuits, Graph theory and related topics (Proc. Conf., Univ. Waterloo, 1977), pp. 341-355, Academic Press, 1979]) asserts that every bridgeless cubic graph can be embedded on a surface of its own genus in such a way that the face boundaries are cycles of the graph. In this paper we consider closed 2-cell embeddings of graphs and show that certain (cubic) graphs (of any fixed genus) have closed 2-cell embedding only in surfaces whose genus is very large (proportional to the order of these graphs), thus provi…
We show that for every $k \in \mathbb{N}$ there exists $C > 0$ such that if $p^k \ge C \log^8 n / n$ then asymptotically almost surely the random graph $G_{n,p}$ contains the $k$\textsuperscript{th} power of a Hamilton cycle. This determines the threshold for appearance of the square of a Hamilton cycle up to the logarithmic factor, improving a result of Kühn and Osthus. Moreover, our proof provides a randomized quasi-polynomial algorithm for finding such powers of cycles. Using similar ideas, we also give a randomized quasi-polynomial algorithm for finding a tight Hamilton cycle in the random…
We present eighteen exact analogs of six well-known fundamental Theorems (due to Dirac, Nash-Williams and Jung) in hamiltonian graph theory providing alternative compositions of graph invariants. In Theorems 1-3 we give three lower bounds for the length of a longest cycle $C$ of a graph $G$ in terms of minimum degree $δ$, connectivity $κ$ and parameters $\bar{p}$, $\bar{c}$ - the lengths of a longest path and longest cycle in $G\backslash C$, respectively. These bounds have no analogs in the area involving $\bar{p}$ and $\bar{c}$ as parameters. In Theorems 11 and 12 we give two Dirac-type resu…
We study a certain polytope arising from embedding the Hamiltonian cycle problem in a discounted Markov decision process. The Hamiltonian cycle problem can be reduced to finding particular extreme points of a certain polytope associated with the input graph. This polytope is a subset of the space of discounted occupational measures. We characterize the feasible bases of the polytope for a general input graph $G$, and determine the expected numbers of different types of feasible bases when the underlying graph is random. We utilize these results to demonstrate that augmenting certain additional…
In this paper we show how to find nearly optimal embeddings of large trees in several natural classes of graphs. The size of the tree T can be as large as a constant fraction of the size of the graph G, and the maximum degree of T can be close to the minimum degree of G. For example, we prove that any graph of minimum degree d without 4-cycles contains every tree of size εd^2 and maximum degree at most (1-2ε)d - 2. As there exist d-regular graphs without 4-cycles of size O(d^2), this result is optimal up to constant factors. We prove similar nearly tight results for graphs of given girth, grap…
Graph packing generally deals with unlabeled graphs. In \cite{EHRT11}, the authors have introduced a new variant of the graph packing problem, called the \textit{labeled packing of a graph}. This problem has recently been studied on trees \cite{TDK13} and cycles \cite{EHRT11}. In this note, we present a lower bound on the labeled packing number of any $(n,n-2)$-graph into $K_n$. This result improves the bound given by Woźniak in \cite{W94}.
A graph is strongly even-cycle decomposable if the edge set of every subdivision with an even number of edges can be partitioned into cycles of even length. We prove that several fundamental composition operations that preserve the property of being Eulerian also yield strongly even-cycle decomposable graphs. As an easy application of our theorems, we give an exact characterization of the set of strongly even-cycle decomposable cographs.
A $d$-hypertree on $[n]$ is a maximal acyclic $d$-dimensional simplicial complex with full $(d-1)$-skeleton on the vertex set $[n]$. Alternatively, in the language of algebraic topology, it is a minimal $d$-dimensional simplicial complex $T$ (assuming full $(d-1)$-skeleton) such that $\tilde{H}_{d-1}(T;\mathbb{F})=0$. The $d$-hypertrees are a basic object in combinatorial theory of simplicial complexes. They have been studied; and yet, many of their structural aspects remain poorly understood. In this paper we study the boundaries $\partial_d T$ of $d$-hypertrees, and the fundamental $d$-cycle…
We generalise a fundamental graph-theoretical fact, stating that every element of the cycle space of a graph is a sum of edge-disjoint cycles, to arbitrary continua. To achieve this we replace graph cycles by topological circles, and replace the cycle space of a graph by a new homology group for continua which is a quotient of the first singular homology group $H_1$. This homology seems to be particularly apt for studying spaces with infinitely generated $H_1$, e.g. infinite graphs or fractals.
Back in the Eighties, Heath showed that every 3-planar graph is subhamiltonian and asked whether this result can be extended to a class of graphs of degree greater than three. In this paper we affirmatively answer this question for the class of 4-planar graphs. Our contribution consists of two algorithms: The first one is limited to triconnected graphs, but runs in linear time and uses existing methods for computing hamiltonian cycles in planar graphs. The second one, which solves the general case of the problem, is a quadratic-time algorithm based on the book-embedding viewpoint of the proble…
