In the context of Mather's theory of Lagrangian systems, we study the decomposition in chain-transitive classes of the Mather invariant sets. As an application, we prove, under appropriate hypotheses, the semi-continuity of the so-called Aubry set as a function of the Lagrangian.
In a previous work, the author established a nonautonomous Conley index based on the interplay between a nonautonomous evolution operator and its skew-product formulation. This index is refined to obtain a Conley index for families of nonautonomous evolution operators. Different variants such as a categorial index, a homotopy index and a homology index are obtained. Furthermore, attractor-repeller decompositions and conecting homomorphisms are introduced for the nonautonomous setting.
We prove that every combinatorial dynamical system in the sense of Forman, defined on a family of simplices of a simplicial complex, gives rise to a multivalued dynamical system F on the geometric realization of the simplicial complex. Moreover, F may be chosen in such a way that the isolated invariant sets, Conley indices, Morse decompositions, and Conley-Morse graphs of the two dynamical systems are in one-to-one correspondence.
Conley indices and Morse decompositions of flows can be found by using algorithms which rigorously analyze discrete dynamical systems. This usually involves integrating a time discretization of the flow using interval arithmetic. We compare the old idea of fixing a time step as a parameters to a time step continuously varying in phase space. We present an example where this second strategy necessarily yields better numerical outputs and prove that our outputs yield a valid Morse decomposition of the given flow.
For a continuous flow on a compact metric space, the aim of this paper is to prove a Conley-type decomposition of the strong chain recurrent set. We first discuss in details the main properties of strong chain recurrent sets. We then introduce the notion of strongly stable set as an invariant set which is the intersection of the $ω$-limits of a specific family of nested and definitively invariant neighborhoods of itself. This notion strengthens the one of stable set; moreover, any attractor results strongly stable. We then show that strongly stable sets play the role of attractors in the decom…
The Conley index theory is a powerful topological tool for describing the basic structure of dynamical systems. One important feature of this theory is the attractor-repeller decomposition of isolated invariant sets. In this decomposition, all points in the invariant set belong to the attractor, its associated dual repeller, or a connecting region. In this connecting region, points tend towards the attractor in forwards time and the repeller in backwards time. This decomposition is also, in a certain topological sense, stable under perturbation. Conley theory is well-developed for flows and ho…
Attractor-repeller decompositions of isolated invariant sets give rise to so-called connecting homomorphisms. These homomorphisms reveal information on the existence and structure of connecting trajectories of the underlying dynamical system. To give a meaningful generalization of this general principle to nonautonomous problems, the nonautonomous homology Conley index is expressed as a direct limit. Moreover, it is shown that a nontrivial connecting homomorphism implies, on the dynamical systems level, a sort of uniform connectedness of the attractor-repeller decomposition.
In this paper we introduce filtration pairs for isolated invariant sets of continuous maps. We prove the existence of filtration pairs and show that, up to shift equivalence, the induced map on the corresponding pointed space is an invariant of the isolated invariant set. Moreover, the maps defining the shift equivalence can be chosen canonically. Lastly, we define partially ordered Morse decompositions and prove the existence of Morse set filtrations for such decompositions.
Consider a continuous flow of automorphisms of a G-principal bundle which is chain transitive on its compact Hausdorff base. Here G is a connected noncompact semi-simple Lie group with finite center. The finest Morse decomposition of the induced flows on the associated flag bundles were obtained in previous articles. Here we describe the stable sets of these Morse components and, under an additional assumption, their Conley indices.
In the first part of this paper, we generalize the results of the author \cite{Liu,Liu2} from the random flow case to the random semiflow case, i.e. we obtain Conley decomposition theorem for infinite dimensional random dynamical systems. In the second part, by introducing the backward orbit for random semiflow, we are able to decompose invariant random compact set (e.g. global random attractor) into random Morse sets and connecting orbits between them, which generalizes the Morse decomposition of invariant sets originated from Conley \cite{Con} to the random semiflow setting and gives the pos…
Multivector fields provide an avenue for studying continuous dynamical systems in a combinatorial framework. There are currently two approaches in the literature which use persistent homology to capture changes in combinatorial dynamical systems. The first captures changes in the Conley index, while the second captures changes in the Morse decomposition. However, such approaches have limitations. The former approach only describes how the Conley index changes across a selected isolated invariant set though the dynamics can be much more complicated than the behavior of a single isolated invaria…
In this paper, we apply Conley index theory in a covering space of an invariant set $S$, possibly not isolated, in order to describe the dynamics in $S$. More specifically, we consider the action of the covering translation group in order to define a topological separation of $S$ which distinguish the connections between the Morse sets within a Morse decomposition of $S$. The theory developed herein generalizes the classical connection matrix theory, since one obtains enriched information on the connection maps for non isolated invariant sets, as well as, for isolated invariant sets. Moreover,…
It is known by the Conley's theorem that the chain recurrent set $CR(ϕ)$ of a deterministic flow $ϕ$ on a compact metric space is the complement of the union of sets $B(A)-A$, where $A$ varies over the collection of attractors and $B(A)$ is the basin of attraction of $A$. It has recently been shown that a similar decomposition result holds for random dynamical systems on noncompact separable complete metric spaces, but under a so-called \emph{absorbing condition}. In the present paper, the authors introduce a notion of random chain recurrent sets for random dynamical systems, and then prove th…
Area and orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the standard 2-disc, referred to as symplectomorphisms of $\mathbb{D}^{2}$, allow decompositions in terms of positive twist diffeomorphisms. Using the latter decomposition we utilize the Conley index theory of discrete braid classes as introduced in [Ghrist et al., C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris Sér. I Math., 331(11), 2000, Invent. Math., 152(2), 2003] in order to obtain a Morse type forcing theory of periodic points: a priori information about periodic points determines a mapping class which may force additional periodic points.
We already know a great deal about dynamical systems with uniqueness in forward time. Indeed, flows, semiflows, and maps (both invertible and not) have been studied at length. A view that has proven particularly fruitful is topological: consider invariant sets (attractors, repellers, periodic orbits, etc.) as topological objects, and the connecting sets between them form gradient like flows. In the case of systems with uniqueness in forward time, an attractor in one system is related to nearby attractors in a family of other, "close enough" systems. One way of seeing that connection is through…
