Neutron scattering is used to study magnetic field induced ordering in the quasi-1D quantum spin-tube compound Sul--Cu$_2$Cl$_4$ that in zero field has a non-magnetic spin-liquid ground state. The experiments reveal an incommensurate chiral high-field phase stabilized by a geometric frustration of the magnetic interactions. The measured critical exponents $β\approx0.235$ and $ν\approx0.34$ at $H_c\approx3.7$ T point to an unusual sub-critical scaling regime and may reflect the chiral nature of the quantum critical point.
We carry out Monte-Carlo simulations to discuss critical properties of a classical two-dimensional XY frustrated helimagnet on a square lattice. We find two successive phase transitions upon the temperature decreasing: the first one is associated with breaking of a discrete Z_2 symmetry and the second one is of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type at which the SO(2) symmetry breaks. Thus, a narrow region exists on the phase diagram between lines of the Ising and the BKT transitions that corresponds to a chiral spin liquid.
The Goldstone mode in the ordered phase of itinerant helimagnets, such as MnSi or FeGe, is determined and shown to have a strongly anisotropic dispersion relation. The softness of this mode is, in a well-defined sense, in between that of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic magnons, respectively. It is shown that this soft mode leads to nonanalytic corrections to Fermi-liquid behavior, with a T-contribution to the specific heat coefficient, and a T^{5/2}-contribution to the resistivity. The quasi-particle inelastic lifetime shows anisotropic behavior in momentum space.
We report on detailed magnetic measurements on the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at $T_C= 278.2(3)$ K. Precursor phenomena display a complex succession of temperature-driven crossovers and phase transitions in the vicinity of $T_C$. The A-phase region, present below $T_C$ and fields $H<0.5$ kOe, is split in several pockets. Relying on a modified phenomenological theory for chiral magnets, the main part of the A-phase could indicate the existence of a $+π$ Skyrmion lattice, the adjacent A$_2$ pocket, however, appea…
Neutron diffraction and bulk measurements are used to determine the nature of the low-temperature ordered state in LiCu$_2$O$_2$, a $S=1/2$ spin-chain compound with competing interactions. The magnetic structure is found to be helimagnetic, with a propagation vector $(0.5,ζ,0)$, $ζ=0.174$. The nearest-neighbor exchange constant and frustration ratio are estimated to be $J=5.8$ meV and $J_2/J_1=0.29$, respectively. For idealized spin chains these parameter values would signify a gapped spin-liquid ground state. Long-range ordering is attributed to intrinsic non-stoichiometry.
Using a simple model of a frustrated helimagnet, the critical behavior is numerically investigated for planar or isotropic spins, and for cases of one or two chiral order parameters. The helical structure in this model arises from the competition between exchange interactions of spins of the first two range orders in one direction (in both directions) of a square lattice. The main result is that the critical and temperature behavior is primarily determined by topological defects that are present in all cases. In the case of planar spins, vortices, fractional vortices and domain walls are prese…
We present a comprehensive study of the magnetization dynamics and phase evolution in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$, which realizes a chiral soliton lattice (CSL). The magnetic field dependence of the ac magnetic response is analyzed for five harmonic components, $M_{nω}(H)$ $(n =1-5)$, using a phase sensitive measurement over a frequency range, $f = 11 - 10,000$ Hz. At a critical field, the modulated CSL continuously evolves from a helicity-rich to a ferromagnetic domain-rich structure, where the crossover is revealed by the onset of an anomalous nonlinear magnetic response that coincides with extremel…
Antiferromagnet Mn$_3$P with Neel temperature $T_N=30$ K is composed of Mn-tetrahedrons and zigzag chains formed by three inequivalent Mn sites. Due to the nearly frustrated lattice with many short Mn-Mn bonds, competition of the exchange interactions is expected. We here investigate the magnetic structure and physical properties including pressure effect in single crystals of this material, and reveal a complex yet well-ordered helimagnetic structure. The itinerant character of this materials is strong, and the ordered state with small magnetic moments is easily suppressed under pressure, exh…
It is shown that a condensation transition involving a chiral order parameter can occur in itinerant helimagnets, in analogy to the transition between the isotropic phase and the phase known as blue fog or blue phase III in cholesteric liquid crystals. It is proposed that such a transition is the explanation for recent neutron scattering results in MnSi. Predictions are made that will allow to experimentally test this proposal.
We present the theory of nonlinear ac magnetic response for the highly nonlinear regime of the chiral soliton lattice. Increasing of the dc magnetic field perpendicularly to the chiral axis results in crossover inside the phase, when nearly isolated $2π$-kinks are partitioned by vast ferromagnetic domains. Assuming that each of the kink reacts independently from the other ones to the external ac field, we demonstrate that internal deformations of such a kink give rise to the nonlinear response.
It is shown that strong fluctuations preclude a hydrodynamic description of transport phenomena in helimagnets, such as MnSi, at T>0. This breakdown of hydrodynamics is analogous to the one in chiral liquid crystals. Mode-mode coupling effects lead to infinite renormalizations of various transport coefficients, and the actual macroscopic description is nonlocal. At T=0 these effects are weakened due to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, and the renormalizations remain finite. Observable consequences of these results, as manifested in the neutron scattering cross-section, are discussed
We study properties of a helimagnetic thin film with quantum Heisenberg spin model by using the Green's function method. Surface spin configuration is calculated by minimizing the spin interaction energy. It is shown that the angles between spins near the surface are strongly modified with respect to the bulk configuration. Taking into account this surface spin reconstruction, we calculate self-consistently the spin-wave spectrum and the layer magnetizations as functions of temperature up to the disordered phase. The spin-wave spectrum shows the existence of a surface-localized branch which ca…
We performed a series of resistivity measurements of a MnSi single crystal at high pressures, created by a piston-cylinder device with a liquid pressure medium. The form of the resistivity curve at ambient pressure clearly indicates a first order nature of the magnetic phase transition in MnSi. Application of high pressure shows fast degradation of the first order features of the phase transition. The temperature derivative of resistivity demonstrates two notable features of the phase transition that disappear on pressure increasing. They are a sharp peak marking the first order phase transiti…
Two centuries of research on phase transitions have repeatedly highlighted the importance of critical fluctuations that abound in the vicinity of a critical point. They are at the origin of scaling laws obeyed by thermodynamic observables close to second-order phase transitions resulting in the concept of universality classes, that is of paramount importance for the study of organizational principles of matter. Strikingly, in case such soft fluctuations are too abundant they may alter the nature of the phase transition profoundly; the system might evade the critical state altogether by undergo…
An impurity in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid leads to a crossover between short- and long-distance regime which describes many physical phenomena. However, calculation of the entire crossover of correlation functions over different length scales has been difficult. We develop a powerful numerical method based on infinite DMRG utilizing a finite system with infinite boundary conditions, which can be applied to correlation functions near an impurity. For the $S=1/2$ chain, we demonstrate that the full crossover can be precisely obtained, and that their limiting behaviors show a good agreement with…
We investigate a system of one dimensional Hubbard chains of interacting fermions coupled by inter-chain hopping. Using a generalization of the Dynamical Mean Field Theory we study the deconfinement transition from a Mott insulator to a metal and the crossover between Luttinger and Fermi liquid phases. One-particle properties, local spin response and inter-chain optical conductivity are calculated. Possible applications to organic conductors are discussed.
A crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid phase in Yb$_2$Ni$_{12}$P$_7$ is observed by analyzing electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C(T)$, and thermoelectric power $S(T)$ measurements. The electronic contribution to specific heat, $C_{e}(T)$, behaves as $C_{e}(T)/T \sim -\ln(T)$ for 5 K $< T <$ 15 K, which is consistent with non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below $T \sim$ 4 K, the upturn in $C_{e}(T)/T$ begins to saturate, suggesting that the system crosses over into a Fermi-liquid ground state. This is consistent with robust $ρ(T) - ρ_0 = AT^2$…
We report a study of the reorientation of the helimagnetic order in the archetypal cubic chiral magnet MnSi as a function of magnetic field direction. The reorientation process as inferred from small-angle neutron scattering, the magnetization, and the ac susceptibility is in excellent agreement with an effective mean-field theory taking into account the precise symmetries of the crystallographic space group. Depending on the field and temperature history and the direction of the field with respect to the crystalline axes, the helix reorientation may exhibit a crossover, a first-order, or a se…
The antiferromagnetic spin correlation function $S_{\bf Q}$, the staggered spin susceptibility $χ_{\bf Q}$ and the energy scale $ω_{FL}=S_{\bf Q}/χ_{\bf Q}$ are studied numerically within the t-J model and the Hubbard model, as relevant to cuprates. It is shown that $ω_{FL}$, related to the onset of the non-Fermi-liquid spin response at $T>ω_{FL}$, is very low in the regime below the 'optimum' hole doping $c_h < c_h^* \sim 0.16$, while it shows a steep increase in the overdoped regime. A quantitative analysis of NMR spin-spin relaxation-rate $1/T_{2G}$ for various cuprates reveals a similar be…
The temperature (T) dependence of the muon and $^{63}$Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates $1/T_1$ in YbCu4.4Au0.6 is reported over nearly four decades. It is shown that for $T\to 0$ $1/T_1$ diverges following the behaviour predicted by the self-consistent renormalization (SCR) theory developed by Moriya for a ferromagnetic quantum critical point. On the other hand, the static uniform susceptibility $χ_s$ is observed to diverge as $T^{-2/3}$ and $1/T_1T\propto χ_s^2$, a behaviour which is not accounted for by SCR theory. The application of a magnetic field $H$ is observed to induce a cross…
The ground state of the Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor hopping on the square lattice at half filling is known to be that of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) band insulator for any on-site repulsion. At finite temperature, the absence of long-range order makes the question of how the interaction-driven insulator is realized nontrivial. We address this problem with controlled accuracy in the thermodynamic limit using self-energy diagrammatic determinant Monte Carlo and dynamical cluster approximation methods and show that development of long-range AFM correlations drives an extended crossover fro…
We explore the effect of inhomogeneity on electronic properties of the two-dimensional Hubbard model on a square lattice using dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The inhomogeneity is introduced via modulated lattice hopping such that in the extreme inhomogeneous limit the resulting geometry is a Lieb lattice, which exhibits a flat-band dispersion. The crossover can be observed in the uniform sublattice magnetization which is zero in the homogeneous case and increases with the inhomogeneity. Studying the spatially resolved frequency-dependent local self-energy, we find a crossover from Fermi-l…
We study excitations in weakly interacting pairs of quantum spin ladders coupled through geometrically frustrated bonds. The ground state is a disordered spin liquid, that at high fields is replaced by an ordered chiral helimagnetic phase. The spectra observed by high-field inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the prototype compound Sul-Cu2Cl4 are qualitatively different from those in the previously studied frustration-free spin liquids. Beyond the critical field Hc=3.7 T, the soft mode that drives the quantum phase transition spawns two separate excitations: a gapless Goldstone mode an…
K(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 has been investigated by Raman scattering in both bulk and nanoparticle compounds. Phonon modes from 20 to 1600 cm-1 have been assigned. Focusing on the unexplored low frequency phonons, a plateau in frequencies is observed in the bulk phonons between 50 and 100 K and assigned to the signature of the bad metal phase. Nanoparticles of K(BEDT-TTF)2Cu(NCS)2 exhibit anomalies at 50 K associated to the crossover from a bad metal to a Fermi liquid whose origins are discussed.
We consider a theoretical problem of electron-electron scattering time in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) conductor in a magnetic field, perpendicular to its conducting axis. We show that inverse electron-electron scattering time becomes of the order of characteristic electron energy, $1/τ\sim ε\sim T$, in a high magnetic field, directed far from the main crystallographic axes, which indicates breakdown of the Fermi liquid theory. In a magnetic field, directed close to one of the main crystallographic axis, inverse electron-electron scattering time becomes much smaller than characteristic electr…
Self-energy at zero temperature is investigated up to the third-order of interaction using one-patch model in two dimensions, whose interaction process corresponds to $g_4$-process of $g$-ology model in one dimension. The self-energy $Σ^R({\mib k},ε)$ diverges at $ε=ξ_k$, and the contribution from the particle-hole process in third-order self-energy diagrams has a stronger divergence compared to the one from the particle-particle process. This implies that the loop-cancellation in the forward scattering is insufficient due to the effect of the warping of the Fermi surface. The strong energy de…
We use higher-dimensional bosonization to study the normal state of electrons in weakly coupled metallic chains interacting with long-range Coulomb forces. Particular attention is paid to the crossover between Luttinger and Fermi liquid behavior as the interchain hopping is varied. Although in the physically interesting case of finite but small interchain hopping the quasi-particle residue does not vanish, the single-particle Green's function exhibits the signature of Luttinger liquid behavior (i.e. anomalous scaling and spin-charge separation) in a large intermediate parameter regime. Using r…
Entanglement of spin and orbital Kondo effect is investigated on the basis of a Kondo-type exchange model with twofold orbital degeneracy. By using Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method, we examine dynamical and thermal properties respecting the difference in time-reversal property of multipole operators. In the presence of particle-hole symmetry, the model has a new non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with a fractional entropy. The spectral intensity of the quadrupole susceptibility diverges in the zero-frequency limit, while the dipole susceptibility shows a Fermi-liquid-like behavior. Th…
We theoretically calculate the finite wave vector plasmon dispersion in a low density 2D electron layer taking into account finite temperature, finite layer width, and local field corrections. We compare our theoretical results with recent Raman scattering spectroscopic experimental 2D plasmon dispersion data in GaAs quantum wells at very low carrier densities ($r_s > 10$) and large wave vectors ($q \ge k_F$). We find good agreement with the experimental data, providing an explanation for why the experimentally measured dispersion seems to obey the simple classical long wavelength 2D plasmon d…
We perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the oxygen-17 Knight shifts for Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, while subjected to uniaxial stress applied along [100] direction. The resulting strain is associated with a strong variation of the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the inferred magnetic response. A quasi-particle description based on density-functional theory calculations, supplemented by many-body renormalizations, is found to reproduce our experimental results, and highlights the key role of a van-Hove singularity. The Fermi liquid coherence scale is shown to be tunable by …
Recent experimental and theoretical work in strongly correlated electron system necessitates a formulation to deal with 1d to 2d dimensional crossover and raises several interesting questions. A particularly interesting question is what happens to the 1d Luttinger liquid, as we go from 1d to 2d? The main point of emphasis of the present note is that the transition from 1d to 2d has an underlying quantum group symmetry. This relationhip of 1d to 2d transition with quantum group symmetry ties in nicely with our previous proposal to model superconductivity, antiferromagnetism and related phases a…
We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the physical properties of f^2-configuration systems with a crystalline-electric field (CEF) singlet ground state, which gives rise to a non- Fermi liquid (NFL) fixed point due to the competition between the Kondo-Yosida singlet and CEF singlet states. On the basis of the numerical renormalization group method, we find that the magnetic field breaks this NFL fixed point via two mechanisms: one causing the polarization of f-electrons and the other giving the "channel" anisotropy. These two mechanisms induce a difference in the magnetic field depen…
By means of a specific heat ($C$) and electrical resistivity ($\varrho$) study, we give evidence of a pronounced Fermi liquid (FL) behavior with sizable mass renormalization, $m^{\ast}/m = 30$, up to unusually high temperatures $\sim$70 K in the layered system Cu$_{2/3}$V$_{1/3}$V$_2$S$_4$. At low temperature, a marked upturn of both $C$ and $\varrho$ is suppressed by magnetic field, which suggests a picture of Kondo coupling between conduction electrons in the VS$_2$ layers and impurity spins of the V$^{3+}$ ions located between layers. This picture opens the possibility of controlling electr…
The electrical resistivity of several relatively clean metallic ferromagnets, as well as the helimagnet MnSi, is commonly observed to exhibit non-Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures. This behavior, which is found in both ordered and disordered phases, and both near and away from the magnetic transition, remains a major unsolved problem. We derive and discuss three novel mechanisms underlying such behavior that are based on electron scattering mediated by the exchange of (1) ferromagnons or (2) skyrmionic fluctuations, both in conjunction with weak disorder, or (3) helimagnons in clean sy…
We investigate the spin structure of a uni-axial chiral magnet near the transition temperatures in low fields perpendicular to the helical axis. We find a fan-type modulation structure where the clockwise and counterclockwise windings appear alternatively along the propagation direction of the modulation structure. This structure is often realized in a Yoshimori-type (non-chiral) helimagnet but it is rarely realized in a chiral helimagnet. To discuss underlying physics of this structure, we reconsider the phase diagram (phase boundary and crossover lines) through the free energy and asymptotic…
Symmetry-breaking perturbations destabilize the critical points of the two-channel and two-impurity Kondo models, thereby leading to a crossover from non-Fermi liquid behavior to standard Fermi liquid physics. Here we use an analogy between this crossover and one occurring in the boundary Ising model to calculate the full zero temperature crossover Green function analytically. In remarkable agreement with our numerical renormalization group calculations, the single exact function applies for an arbitrary mixture of the relevant perturbations in each model. This rich behavior resulting from fin…
We study the temperature evolution of the single-particle spectrum $ε(p)$ and quasiparticle momentum distribution $n(p)$ of homogeneous strongly correlated Fermi systems beyond a point where the necessary condition for stability of the Landau state is violated, and the Fermi surface becomes multi-connected by virtue of a topological crossover. Attention is focused on the different non-Fermi-liquid temperature regimes experienced by a phase exhibiting a single additional hole pocket compared with the conventional Landau state. A critical experiment is proposed to elucidate the origin of NFL beh…
We study graphene-based electron systems with long-range Coulomb interaction by performing an analytic continuation in the number of dimensions. We characterize in this way the crossover between the marginal Fermi liquid behavior of a graphite layer and the Luttinger liquid behavior at $D = 1$. The former persists for any dimension above $D = 1$. However, the proximity to the $D = 1$ fixed-point strongly influences the phenomenology of quasi-onedimensional systems, giving rise to an effective power-law behavior of observables like the density of states. This applies to nanotubes of large radiu…
We study the crossover between liquid and solid electron phases in a two-dimensional harmonic trap as the density is progressively diluted. We infer the formation of geometrically ordered phases from charge distributions and pair correlation functions obtained via a large scale configuration interaction calculation.
Spin-state crossover beyond a conventional ligand-field theory has been a fundamental issue in condensed matter physics. Here, we report microscopic observations of spin states and low-energy dynamics through orbital-resolved NMR spectroscopy in the prototype compound LaCoO$_3$. The $^{59}$Co NMR spectrum shows the preserved crystal symmetry across the crossover, inconsistent with $d$ orbital ordering due to the Jahn-Teller distortion. The orbital degeneracy results in a pseudospin ($\tilde{J} = 1$) excited state with an orbital moment observed as $^{59}$Co hyperfine coupling tensors. We found…
The crossover from weak to strong correlations in parabolic quantum dots at zero magnetic field is studied by numerically exact path-integral Monte Carlo simulations for up to eight electrons. By the use of a multilevel blocking algorithm, the simulations are carried out free of the fermion sign problem. We obtain a universal crossover only governed by the density parameter $r_s$. For $r_s>r_c$, the data are consistent with a Wigner molecule description, while for $r_s<r_c$, Fermi liquid behavior is recovered. The crossover value $r_c \approx 4$ is surprisingly small.
We develop a theoretical approach to the low-energy properties of 1D electron systems aimed to encompass the mixed features of Luttinger liquid and Coulomb blockade behavior observed in the crossover between the two regimes. For this aim we extend the Luttinger liquid description by incorporating the effects of a discrete single-particle spectrum. The intermediate regime is characterized by a power-law behavior of the conductance, but with an exponent oscillating with the gate voltage, in agreement with recent experimental observations. Our construction also accounts naturally for the existenc…
We consider the low-energy region of an array of Luttinger liquids coupled by a weak interchain hopping. The leading logarithmic divergences can be re-summed to all orders within a self-consistent perturbative expansion in the hopping, in the large-dimension limit. The anomalous exponent scales to zero below the one-particle crossover temperature. As a consequence, coherent quasiparticles with finite weight appear along the whole Fermi surface. Extending the expansion self-consistently to all orders turns out to be crucial in order to restore the correct Fermi-liquid behavior.
We report specific heat and magneto-resistance studies on the compound Ce${}_{1-x}$La${}_x$Ni${}_9$Ge${}_4$ for various concentrations over the entire stoichiometric range. Our data reveal single-ion scaling with Ce-concentration between $x = 0.1$ and 0.95. Furthermore, CeNi${}_9$Ge${}_4$ turns out to have the largest ever recorded value of the electronic specific heat $Δc/T \approx$ 5.5 J $\rm K^{-2}mol^{-1}$ at $T=0.08$ K which was found in Cerium f-electron lattice systems. In the doped samples $Δc/T$ increases logarithmically in the temperature range between 3 K and 50 mK typical for non-F…
We find the nonlinear conductance of a dissipative resonant level in the nonequilibrium steady state near its quantum critical point. The system consists of a spin-polarized quantum dot connected to two resistive leads that provide ohmic dissipation. We focus on the crossover from the strong-coupling, non-Fermi-liquid regime to the weak-coupling, Fermi-liquid ground state, a crossover driven by the instability of the quantum critical point to hybridization asymmetry or detuning of the level in the dot. We show that the crossover properties are given by tunneling through an effective single bar…
We study the asymmetric Hubbard model at half-filling as a generic model to describe the physics of two species of repulsively interacting fermionic cold atoms in optical lattices. We use Dynamical Mean Field Theory to obtain the paramagnetic phase diagram of the model as function of temperature, interaction strength and hopping asymmetry. A Mott transition with a region of two coexistent solutions is found for all nonzero values of the hopping asymmetry. At low temperatures the metallic phase is a heavy Fermi-liquid, qualitatively analogous to the Fermi liquid state of the symmetric Hubbard m…
Quantum critical systems derive their finite temperature properties from the influence of a zero temperature quantum phase transition. The paradigm is essential for understanding unconventional high-Tc superconductors and the non-Fermi liquid properties of heavy fermion compounds. However, the microscopic origins of quantum phase transitions in complex materials are often debated. Here we demonstrate experimentally, with support from numerical renormalization group calculations, a universal crossover from quantum critical non-Fermi liquid behavior to distinct Fermi liquid ground states in a hi…
High-resolution DC magnetization and AC-specific heat data of the cubic helimagnet FeGe have been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field. The magnetization data as well as the isothermal susceptibility data confirm the complexity of the magnetic phase diagram in the vicinity of the onset of long-rang magnetic order (Tc = 278.5 K) and the existence of a segmented A-phase region. Moreover, these data revealed independent and clear indications of phase boundaries and crossovers within the A-phase region. Together with the anomalies in the specific-heat data around Tc and at small …
The finite-temperature density-matrix renormalization-group method is applied to the one-dimensional Kondo lattice model near half filling to study its thermodynamics. The spin and charge susceptibilities and entropy are calculated down to T=0.03t. We find two crossover temperatures near half filling. The higher crossover temperature continuously connects to the spin gap at half filling, and the susceptibilities are suppressed around this temperature. At low temperatures, the susceptibilities increase again with decreasing temperature when doping is finite. We confirm that they finally approac…
The temperature ($T$) and frequency ($ω$) dependent conductivity of weakly disordered Luttinger liquids is calculated in a systematic way both by perturbation theory and from a finite temperature renormalization group (RG) treatment to leading order in the disorder strength. Whereas perturbation theory results in $ω/T$ scaling of the conductivity such scaling is violated in the RG traetment. We also determine the non-linear field dependence of the conductivity, whose power law scaling is different from that of temperature and frequency dependence.
We study the problem of the crossover from one- to higher-dimensional metals by considering an array of Luttinger liquids (one-dimensional chains) coupled by a weak interchain hopping {\tp.} We evaluate the exact asymptotic low-energy behavior of the self-energy in the anisotropic infinite-dimension limit. This limit extends the dinamical mean field concept to the case of a chain embedded in a self-consistent medium. The system flows to a Fermi-liquid fixed point for energies below the dimensional crossover temperature, and the anomalous exponent $\al$ renormalizes to zero, in the case of equa…
A unified theory is outlined for the cuprates, Fe-based, and related superconductors. Their low-energy excitations are approached in terms of auxiliary particles representing combinations of atomic-like electron configurations, and the introduction of a Lagrange Bose field enables their treatment as bosons or fermions. This theory correctly describes the observed phase diagram of the cuprates, including the non-Fermi-liquid to FL crossover in the normal state, the existence of Fermi arcs below T^* and of "marginal-FL" behavior above it. The anomalous behavior of numerous physical quantities is…
We present time-dependent density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) results for strongly interacting one dimensional fermionic systems at finite temperature. When interactions are strong the characteristic spin energy can be greatly suppressed relative to the characteristic charge energy, allowing for the possibility of spin-incoherent Luttinger liquid physics when the temperature is high compared to the spin energy, but small compared to the charge energy. Using DMRG we compute the spectral properties of the $t-J$ model at arbitrary temperatures with respect to both spin and charge energies…
We review some properties of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors, such as the Bechgaard salts, with an emphasis on aspects related to the crossovers between a Mott insulating state to a metallic state, and crossovers between different metallic behaviors. We discuss why a theoretical description of these issues is a particularly challenging problem, and describe a recent non-perturbative approach designed to deal with systems of coupled chains. This method, dubbed "chain-DMFT", is a generalization of dynamical mean field theory that treats both, one-dimensional and higher dimensional physi…
The pairing of interacting fermions leading to superfluidity has two limiting regimes: the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) scheme for weakly interacting degenerate fermions and the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bosonic pairs of strongly interacting fermions. While the superconductivity that emerges in most metallic systems is the BCS-like electron pairing, strongly correlated electrons with poor Fermi liquidity can condense into the unconventional BEC-like pairs. Quantum spin liquids harbor extraordinary spin correlation free from order and the superconductivity that possibly emerges by …
Hydrodynamic flow in two-dimensional electron systems has so far been probed only by dc transport and scanning gate microscopy measurements. In this work we discuss theoretically signatures of the hydrodynamic regime in near-field optical microscopy. We analyze the dispersion of acoustic plasmon modes in two-dimensional electron liquids using a non-local conductivity that takes into account the effects of (momentum-conserving) electron-electron collisions, (momentum-relaxing) electron-phonon and electron-impurity collisions, and many-body interactions beyond the celebrated Random Phase Approxi…
Motivated by recent experiments on interacting cold atoms, we analyze interaction quenches in Luttinger liquids (LL), where the interaction is ramped from zero to a finite value within a finite time. The fermionic single particle density matrix reveals several regions of spatial and temporal coordinates relative to the quench time, termed as Fermi liquid, sudden quench LL, adiabatic LL regimes, and a LL regime with time dependent exponent. The various regimes can also be observed in the momentum distribution of the fermions, directly accessible through time of flight experiments. Most of our r…
