In this short note, we reduce the N=6, U(N)xU(N) Chern-Simons gauge theories to N=8, U(N) Yang-Mills gauge theories. This process corresponds to recovering the world-volume theory of N D2-branes from that of N M2-branes in an intermediate energy range. The supersymmetries are enhanced because in this limit the branes localize far away from the orbifold singularity. Our main scheme is exactly in accordance with Mukhi and Papageorgakis's earlier work, although the Higgs mechanism becomes trickier in the present case. We also speculate on applying the scheme to a large class of new Bagger-Lambert models more generally.
We investigate D2-branes and D4-branes parallel to D8-branes. The low energy world volume theory on the branes is non-supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory. We identify the fundamental strings as the anyons of the 2+1 Chern-Simons theory and the D0-branes as solitons. The Chern-Simons theory with a boundary is modeled using NS 5-branes with ending D6-branes. The brane set-up provides for a graphical description of anomaly inflow. We also model the 4+1 Chern-Simons theory using branes and conjecture that D4-branes with a boundary describes a supersymmetric version of Kaplan's theory of chiral ferm…
In this article it is studied the 3-brane world in the context of five-dimensional Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity. We started by considering Israel's junction condition for AdS-Chern-Simons gravity. Using the S-expansion procedure, we mapped the AdS-Chern-Simons junction conditions to Einstein-Chern-Simons gravity, allowing us to derive effective four-dimensional Einstein-Chern-Simons field equations.
We show that N=2 supersymmetric Maxwell-Chern-Simons-Higgs systems in three dimension can be realized as gauge theories on a D2-brane in D8-branes background with a non-zero B-field. We reproduce a potential of Coulomb branch of the Chern-Simons theory as a potential of a D2-brane in a classical D8-brane solution and show that each Coulomb vacuum is realized by a D2-brane stabilized in the bulk at a certain distance from D8-branes.
We write down couplings of the fields on a single BPS Dp-brane with noncommutative world-volume coordinates to the RR-forms in type II theories, in a manifestly background independent way. This generalises the usual Chern-Simons action for a commutative Dp-brane. We show that the noncommutative Chern-Simons terms can be mapped to Myers terms on a collection of infinitely many D-instantons. We also propose Chern-Simons couplings for unstable non-BPS branes, and show that condensation of noncommutative tachyons on these branes leads to the correct Myers terms on the decay products.
We study the correspondence between the moduli space of vacua of three-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills (Maxwell) Chern-Simons theories and brane configurations with (p,q)5-brane. For Coulomb branches, the number of the massless adjoint scalar fields in various supersymmetric theories exactly coincides with the number of the freely moving directions of D3-branes stretched between two 5-branes. When we include a matter superfield into the supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory two distinct symmetric and asymmetric phase appear. The symmetric phase is peculiar to this Chern-Simons Higgs system.…
We analyse a system of arbitrarily intersecting D-branes in ten-dimensional supergravity. Chiral anomalies are supported on the intersection branes, called I-branes. For non-transversal intersections anomaly cancellation has been realized until now only cohomologically but not locally, due to short-distance singularities. In this paper we present a consistent local cancellation mechanism, writing the delta-like brane currents as differentials of the recently introduced Chern--kernels, J=dK. In particular, for the first time we achieve anomaly cancellation for dual pairs of D-branes. The Chern-…
Chern-Simons quivers for M2-branes at Calabi-Yau singularities are best understood as the low energy theory of D2-branes on a dual type IIA background. We show how the D2-brane point of view naturally leads to three dimensional Seiberg dualities for Chern-Simons quivers with chiral matter content: They arise from a change of brane basis (or mutation), in complete analogy with the better known Seiberg dualities for D3-brane quivers. This perspective reproduces the known rules for Seiberg dualities in Chern-Simons-Yang-Mills theories with unitary gauge groups. We provide explicit examples of dua…
In this short note we provide a proof that the Chern-Simons part of the action for N D-branes is invariant under gauge transformations of the RR fields of the type C_p ->C_p + dΛ_{p-1}, and rewrite the action in a form that makes this symmetry manifest.
We propose a Chern-Simons term for N coinciding non-BPS D-branes. Demanding full U(N) invariance and compatibility with T-duality, it is shown that it is necessary to introduce new interaction terms, through which the non-BPS D-branes couple to all p-form RR fields.
We derive an equivalence between the (2,0) superconformal M5-brane field theory dimensionally reduced on a squashed three-sphere, and Chern-Simons theory with complex gauge group. In the reduction, the massless fermions obtain an action which is second order in derivatives and are reinterpreted as ghosts for gauge fixing the emergent non-compact gauge symmetry. A squashing parameter in the geometry controls the imaginary part of the complex Chern-Simons level.
We derive level-rank duality in pure Chern-Simons gauge theories from a non-supersymmetric Seiberg duality by using a non-supersymmetric brane configuration in type IIB string theory. The brane configuration consists of fivebranes, N D3 antibranes and an O3 plane. By swapping the fivebranes we derive a 3d non-supersymmetric Seiberg duality. After level shifts from loop effects, this identifies the IR of Sp(2N)_{2k-2N+2} and Sp(2k-2N+2)_{-2N} pure Chern-Simons theories, which is a level-rank pair. We also derive level-rank duality in a Chern-Simons theory based on a unitary group.
The Chern-Simons membranes and in general the Chern-Simons p-branes moving in $D$-dimensional target space admit an infinite set of secondary constraints. With respect to the Poisson bracket these constraints form a closed algebra which contains classical \ $W_{1+\infty }$ \ algebra in $p$-dimensions as a subalgebra. Corresponding gauged theory in the phase-space is constructed in a Hamilton gauge as an analog of the ordinary $W$-gravity.
We investigate (2+1)-dimensional quiver Chern-Simons theories that arise from the study of M2-branes probing toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. These theories can be elegantly described using brane tilings. We present several theories that admit a tiling description and give details of these theories including the toric data of their mesonic moduli space and the structure of both their Master space and baryonic moduli space. Where different toric phases are known, we exhibit the equivalence between the vacua. We identify some of the mesonic moduli spaces as cones over smooth toric Fano 3-folds.
A new infinite class of Chern-Simons theories is presented using brane tilings. The new class reproduces all known cases so far and introduces many new models that are dual to M2 brane theories which probe a toric non-compact CY 4-fold. The master space of the quiver theory is used as a tool to construct the moduli space for this class and the Hilbert Series is computed for a selected set of examples.
We show that gravitational Chern-Simons corrections, associated with the sigma-model anomaly on the M5-brane world-volume, can resolve the singularity of the M2-brane solution with Ricci-flat, special holonomy transverse space. We explicitly find smooth solutions in the cases when the transverse space is a manifold of Spin(7) holonomy and SU(4) holonomy. We comment on the consequences of these results for the holographically related three-dimensional theories living on the world volume of a stack of such resolved M2-branes.
In this paper we continue the study of the model proposed in the previous paper hep-th/0002077. The model consist of a system of extended objects of diverse dimensionalities, with or without boundaries, with actions of the Chern-Simons form for a supergroup. We also discuss possible connections with Superstring/M-theory.
It is shown that the generalized (with nonpolynomial Lagrangian) Chern-Simons membranes and in general $p$-branes moving in $D$-dimensional target space admit an infinite set of secondary constraints. With respect to the Poisson bracket these constraints satisfy closed algebra containing $p$-dimensional classical $W$ algebra as a subalgebra. In the case when the target space dimension $D$ is finite the theory is topological.
In string theory, nilpotence of the BRS operator $\d$ for the string functional relates the Chern-Simons term in the gauge-invariant antisymmetric tensor field strength to the central term in the Kac-Moody algebra. We generalize these ideas to p-branes with odd p and find that the Kac-Moody algebra for the string becomes the Mickelsson-Faddeev algebra for the p-brane.
We consider Hanany-Witten setups of 3- and 5-branes in type IIB string theory that realize N=(1,0),(2,0) and (1,1) gauged WZW models in 1+1 dimensions. The gauged WZW models arise as theories residing on the boundary of D3 branes ending on D5 branes. From the point of view of low energy dynamics the D5 branes play the role of half-BPS co-dimension-1 defects (domain walls) in 3d N=1 or N=2 Chern-Simons theories. Extending the analysis of previous works on the subject of boundary conditions in (supersymmetric) Chern-Simons theory, we discuss in detail the field theory construction of a large cla…
We study a sector of the 5d maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory on $S^5$ consisting of $1/8$-BPS Wilson loop operators contained within a great $S^3$ inside $S^5$. We conjecture that these observables are described by a 3d Chern Simons theory on $S^3$, analytically continued to a pure imaginary Chern-Simons level. Therefore, the expectation values of these 5d Wilson loops compute knot invariants. We verify this conjecture in the weakly-coupled regime from explicit Feynman diagram computations. At strong coupling, these Wilson loop operators lift to $1/8$-BPS surface operators in the 6d …
We show that string duality relates M-theory on a local Calabi-Yau fourfold singularity X4 to type IIA string theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold X3 fibered over a real line, with RR 2-form fluxes turned on. The RR flux encodes how the M-theory circle is fibered over the IIA geometry. The theories on N D2 branes probing X3 are the well-known quiver theories with N=2 supersymmetry in three dimensions. We show that turning on fluxes, and fibering the X3 over a direction transverse to the branes, corresponds to turning on N=2 Chern-Simons couplings. String duality implies that, in the strong couplin…
We study three-dimensional superconformal field theories on wrapped M5-branes. Applying the gauge/gravity duality and the recently proposed 3d-3d relation, we deduce quantitative predictions for the perturbative free energy of a Chern-Simons theory on hyperbolic 3-space. Remarkably, the perturbative expansion is expected to terminate at two-loops in the large N limit. We check the correspondence numerically in a number of examples, and confirm the N^3 scaling with precise coefficients.
We consider N=2 quiver Chern-Simons theories described by brane tilings, whose moduli spaces are toric Calabi-Yau 4-folds. Simple prescriptions to obtain toric data of the moduli space and a corresponding brane crystal from a brane tiling are proposed.
We study the quantum moduli space of N=2 Chern-Simons quivers with generic ranks and CS levels, proving along the way exact formulas for the charges of bare monopole operators. We then derive N=2 Chern-Simons quiver theories dual to AdS_4 x Y^{p,q}(CP2) M-theory backgrounds, for the whole family of Sasaki-Einstein seven-manifolds and for any value of the torsion G_4 flux. The derivation of the gauge theories relies on the reduction to type IIA string theory, in which M2-branes become D2-branes while the conical geometry maps to RR flux and D6-branes wrapped on compact four-cycles. M5-branes on…
Monopole operators in Abelian N=4 Chern-Simons theories described by circular quiver diagrams are investigated. The magnetic charges of non-diagonal U(1) gauge symmetries form the SU(p)xSU(q) root lattice where p and q are numbers of untwisted and twisted hypermultiplets, respectively. For monopole operators corresponding to the root vectors, we propose a correspondence between the monopole operators and states of a wrapped M2-brane in the dual geometry.
In the vicinity of points in Calabi-Yau moduli space where there are degenerating three-cycles the low energy effective action of type IIA string theory will contain significant contributions arising from membrane instantons that wrap around these three-cycles. We show that the world-volume description of these instantons is Chern-Simons theory.
We investigate a class of N=4 quiver Chern-Simons theories and their gravity duals. We define the group of fractional D3-brane charges in a type IIB brane setup with taking account of D3-brane creation due to Hanany-Witten effect, and confirm that it agrees with the 3-cycle homology of the dual geometry, which describes the charges of fractional M2-branes, M5-branes wrapped on 3-cycles. The relation between the fractional brane charge and the torsion of the three-form potential field is partially established. We also discuss the duality between baryonic operators in the Chern-Simons theories a…
Actions for extended objects based on Transgression and Chern-Simons forms for space-time groups and supergroups provide a gauge theoretic framework in which to embed previously studied String and Brane actions, extending them in interesting ways that may be useful in a future non perturbative formulation of String Theory. In this Letter I investigate aspects of the actions of these theories, including equations of motion and boundary conditions, gauge and space-time symmetries, and Dirac quantization of tensions. This theoretical framework is shown to include in certain limit and for a suitab…
We present an elegant method to prove the invariance of the Chern-Simons part of the non-Abelian action for N coinciding D-branes under the R-R and NS-NS gauge transformations, by carefully defining what is meant by a background gauge transformation in the non-Abelian world volume action. We study as well the invariance under massive gauge transformations of the massive Type IIA supergravity and show that no massive dielectric couplings are necessary to achieve this invariance.
We show that the Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) theory with two pairs of negative norm generators is derived from the scaling limit of an orbifolded Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory. The BLG theory with many Lorentzian pairs is known to be reduced to the Dp-brane theory via Higgs mechanism, so our scaling procedure can be used to derive Dp-branes directly from M2-branes in the field theory language. In this paper, we focus on the D3-brane case and investigate the scaling limits of various quiver Chern-Simons theories obtained from different orbifolding actions. Remarkably, in …
SU(N) reduced, quenched, gauge theories have been shown to be related to string theories. We extend this result and show how a 4-dimensional, reduced, quenched, Yang-Mills theory, supplemented by the topological term, can be related through the Wigner-Weyl-Moyal correspondence to an open 3-brane model. The boundary of the 3-brane is described by a Chern-Simons 2-brane. We identify the bulk of the 3-brane with the interior of a hadronic bag and the world-volume of the Chern-Simons 2-brane with the dynamical boundary of the bag. We estimate the value of the induced bag constant to be a little le…
Conformally invariant sigma models in $D=2n$ dimensions with target non-compact O(2n,1) groups are studied. It is shown that despite the non-compact nature of the O(2n,1) groups, the classical action and Hamiltonian are positive definite. Instanton field configurations are found to correspond geometrically to conformal ``stereographic'' mappings of $R^{2n}$ into the Euclidean signature $AdS_{2n}$ spaces. Zaikov's relationship between Self Dual $p$-branes and Chern-Simons $p'$-branes, provided $p=p'+1$ and the embedding $D=p+1$-dimensional manifold is Euclidean, is elaborated further. Branes ac…
We study various three-dimensional supersymmetric Maxwell Chern-Simons solitons by using type IIB brane configurations. We give a systematic classification of soliton spectra such as topological BPS vortices and nontopological vortices in $\mathcal{N}=2,3$ supersymmetric Maxwell Chern-Simons system via the branes of type IIB string theory. We identify the brane configurations with the soliton spectra of the field theory and obtain a nice agreement with field theory aspects. We also discuss possible brane constructions for BPS domain wall solutions.
We explicitly construct the creation operators for the quantum field configurations associated to quantum membranes (2-branes) in BF and generalized Chern-Simons theories in a spacetime of dimension D=5. The creation operators for quantum excitations carrying topological charge are also obtained in the same theories. For the case of D=5 generalized Chern-Simons theory, we show that this operator actually creates an open string with a topological charge at its tip. It is shown that a duality structure exists in general, relating the membrane and topological excitation operators and the correspo…
We show that this result is consistent with (massive) T-duality from the non-Abelian action for N D9-branes.
We study the 3D field theory on one D3-brane stretched between (r,s) and (p,q)5-branes. The boundary conditions are determined from the analysis of NS5 and D5 charges of the two 5-branes. We carry out the mode expansions for all the fields and identify the field theory as Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory. We examine the mass spectrum to determine the conditions for unbroken supersymmetry (SUSY) in this field theory and compare the results with those from the brane configurations. The spectrum is found to be invariant under the Type IIB SL(2,{\bf Z})-transformation. We also discuss the theory with m…
In the Berkooz-Douglas matrix model of M theory in the presence of longitudinal $M5$-brane, we investigate the effective dynamics of the system by considering the longitudinal $M5$-brane as the background and the spherical $M5$-brane related with the other space dimensions as the probe brane. Due to there exists the background field strength provided by the source of the longitudinal $M5$-brane, an open membrane should be ended on the spherical $M5$-brane based on the topological reason. The formation of the bound brane configuration for the open membrane ending on the 5-branes in the backgrou…
We study BPS vortices in the mass-deformed non-relativistic ${\C N}=6$ $U(N)_k\times U(N)_{-k}$ Chern-Simons-matter theory. We focus on the massive deformation that preserves the maximal ${\C N}=6$ supersymmetry, and consider a non-relativistic limit that carry 14 supercharges. In this non-relativistic field theory we find Jackiw-Pi type exact vortex solutions combined with $S^3$ fuzzy sphere geometry. We analyse their properties and show that they preserve one dynamical, one conformal and five kinematical supersymmetries among the full super Schrödinger symmetry.
We study 5d N=2 maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with a gauge group G on S^2 x M_3, where M_3 is a 3-manifold. By explicit localization computation we show that the path-integral of the 5d N=2 theory reduces to that of the 3d G_C Chern-Simons theory on M_3, where G_C is the complexification of G. This gives a direct derivation of the appearance of the Chern-Simons theory from the compactification of the 6d (2,0) theory, confirms the predictions from the 3d/3d correspondence for G=SU(N), and suggests the generalization of the correspondence to more general gauge groups.
This paper deals with magnetic equations of the type dH=J where the current J is a delta-function on a brane worldvolume and H a p-form field strength. In many situations in M-theory this equation needs to be solved for H in terms of a potential. A standard universality class of solutions, involving Dirac-branes, gives rise to strong intermediate singularities in H which in many physically relevant cases lead to inconsistencies. In this paper we present an alternative universality class of solutions for magnetic equations in terms of Chern-kernels, and provide relevant applications, among whic…
We study two aspects of M5-branes in N=6 U(N)xU(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory. We first examine multiple M2-branes ending on a M5-brane. We study Basu-Harvey type cubic equations, fuzzy funnel configurations, and derive the M5-brane tension from the N=6 theory. We also find a limit in which the above M2-M5 system reduces to a D2-D4 system and we recover the Nahm equation from the N=6 theory. We then examine domain wall configurations in mass-deformed N=6 theory with a manifest SU(2)xSU(2)xU(1) global symmetry. We derive tensions of domain walls connecting between arbitrary M5-brane vacua of the…
Brane Tilings represent one of the largest classes of superconformal theories with known gravity duals in 3+1 and also 2+1 dimensions. They provide a useful link between a large class of quiver gauge theories and their moduli spaces, which are the toric Calabi-Yau (CY) singularities. This thesis includes a discussion of an algorithm that can be used to generate all brane tilings with any given number of superpotential terms. All tilings with at most 8 superpotential terms have been generated using an implementation of this method. Orbifolds are a subject of central importance in string theory.…
Recently, O. Aharony, O. Bergman, D. L. Jafferis and J. Maldacena (ABJM) proposed three-dimensional super Chern-Simons-matter theory, which at level k is supposed to describe the low energy limit of N M2-branes. For large N and k, but fixed 't Hooft coupling λ=N/k, it is dual to type IIA string theory on AdS_4 x CP^3. For large N but finite k, it is dual to M theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k. In this paper, relying on the second duality, we find exact giant magnon and single spike solutions of membrane configurations on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k by reducing the system to the Neumann-Rosochatius integrable mode…
We investigate the zero modes of the Kaluza-Klein monopole in M-theory and show that the Born-Infeld action and the Chern-Simons term of a D6-brane are reproduced to quadratic order in the field strength of the U(1) field on the brane.
We explore further our recent generalization of the $\mathcal{N}=4$ superconformal Chern-Simons theories of Gaiotto and Witten. We find and construct explicitly theories of enhanced $\mathcal{N}=5$ or 6 supersymmetry, especially $\mathcal{N}=5$, $Sp(2M)\times O(N)$ and $\mathcal{N}=6$, $Sp(2M)\times O(2)$ theories. The $U(M)\times U(N)$ theory coincides with the $\mathcal{N}=6$ theory of Aharony, Bergman, Jafferis and Maldacena (ABJM). We argue that the $\mathcal{N}=5$ theory with $Sp(2N)\times O(2N)$ gauge group can be understood as an orientifolding of the ABJM model with $U(2N)\times U(2N)$…
Constructing M2-brane and its boundary conditions from D2-brane and the related boundary conditions and vice versa has been possible in our recent work by using 3-Lie bialgebra for BLG model with N = 8 supersymmetry. This could be generalized for BL model with N = 6 by the concept of the 3-Leibniz bialgebra. The 3-Lie bialgebra is an especial case of 3-Leibniz bialgebra, then more comprehensive information will be obtained in this work. Consequently, according to the correspondence of these 3-Leibniz bialgebras with Lie bialgebras, we reduce to D2-brane such that with some restrictions on the …
The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a collection of results which can be found in the mathematical literature and to apply them to hyperbolic spaces that may have a role in physical theories. Specifically we apply K-theory methods for the calculation of brane charges and RR-fields on hyperbolic spaces (and orbifolds thereof). It is known that by tensoring K-groups with the rationals, K-theory can be mapped to rational cohomology by means of the Chern character isomorphisms. The Chern character allows one to relate the analytic Dirac index with a topological index, which can…
The coupling between Chern-Simons theories and matter sources defined by branes of different dimensionalities is examined. It is shown that the standard coupling to membranes, such as the one found in supergravity or in string theory, does not operate in the same way for CS theories; the only p-branes that naturally couple seem to be those with p=2n; these p-branes break the gauge symmetry (and supersymmetry) in a controlled and sensible manner.
We study the holographic dual of flavors in a Chern-Simons matter theory at non-zero temperature, realized as D6-branes in the type IIA black hole dual in the ABJM background geometry. We consider both massive and massless flavors. The former are treated in the quenched approximation, whereas the massless ones are considered as dynamical objects and their backreaction on the geometry is included in the black hole background. We compute the holographically renormalized action of the probe by imposing several physical conditions. In the limit of massless flavors the free energy and entropy of th…
We construct three dimensional Chern-Simons-matter theories with gauge groups U(N)xU(N) and SU(N)xSU(N) which have explicit N=6 superconformal symmetry. Using brane constructions we argue that the U(N)xU(N) theory at level k describes the low energy limit of N M2-branes probing a C^4/Z_k singularity. At large N the theory is then dual to M theory on AdS_4xS^7/Z_k. The theory also has a 't Hooft limit (of large N with a fixed ratio N/k) which is dual to type IIA string theory on AdS_4xCP^3. For k=1 the theory is conjectured to describe N M2-branes in flat space, although our construction realiz…
We study a system of N D2-branes probing a generic Calabi-Yau three-fold singularity in the presence of a non-zero quantized Romans mass n. We argue that the low-energy effective N = 2 Chern-Simons quiver gauge theory flows to a superconformal fixed point in the IR, and construct the dual AdS_4 solution in massive IIA supergravity. We compute the free energy F of the gauge theory on S^3 using localization. In the large N limit we find F = c(nN)^{1/3}a^{2/3}, where c is a universal constant and a is the a-function of the "parent" four-dimensional N = 1 theory on N D3-branes probing the same Cal…
We present the complete classification of smooth toric Fano threefolds, known to the algebraic geometry literature, and perform some preliminary analyses in the context of brane-tilings and Chern-Simons theory on M2-branes probing Calabi-Yau fourfold singularities. We emphasise that these 18 spaces should be as intensely studied as their well-known counter-parts: the del Pezzo surfaces.
The Chern-Simons level k of ABJM gauge theory captures the orbifolding in the dual geometry. This suggests that if we move the membranes away from the tip of the orbifold to a smooth point, it should trigger an RG flow that changes the level to k=1 in the IR. We construct an explicit supergravity solution that is dual to this shift from generic k to k=1. In the gauge theory side, we present arguments for why this shift is plausible at the end of the RG flow. We also consider a resolution of the orbifold for the case k=4 (where explicit metrics can be found), and construct the smooth supergravi…
In this short note we formulate Covariant Hamiltonian formalism for strings, p-branes and Non-BPS Dp-branes. We also analyse the vacuum tachyon condensation in case of unstable D1-brane.
By constructing the configuration of D3-branes with D(-1)-branes as D-instantons, we study the three-dimensional Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theory in holography. Due to the presence of the D-instantons, the D7-branes with discrepant embedding functions are able to be introduced in order to include the fundamental fermions (as flavors) and the Chern-Simons term (at very low energy) in the dual theory. The vacuum structure at zero temperature is studied in the soliton background and it illustrates the topological phase transition in the presence of instantons. Moreover, since the confinement/deconf…
We study a class of classical solutions of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory coupled with U(N) \times U(N) bi-fundamental matter fields. Especially, time evolutions of fuzzy spheres are discussed for both massless and massive cases. For the massive case, there are a variety of solutions having different behaviors according to the value of the mass. In addition to the time-dependent solutions, we analyze non-BPS static solutions which represent parallel M5/M5 or M5/anti-M5-branes suspended by multiple M2-branes. These solutions are similar to the fundamental strings conne…
We present a generalization of the infinitesimal gauge transformation for nonabelian fields on the stack of branes up to the third order in $Φ$. We test the gauge invariance of the action up to the fifth order in $Φ$ for $D$-instantons. This substantiates the Myers formula for the Chern-Simons term in action, which describes interaction with the RR fields of $N$ coincident $\Dp$ branes.
We add fundamental flavors to N=2 Chern-Simons-matter theories living on M2 branes probing a Calabi-Yau four-fold singularity. This is dual, in the 't Hooft limit described by IIA string theory, to the introduction of supersymmetric D6 branes wrapping AdS4 and a 3-cycle of the internal manifold. The resulting Chern-Simons theories remain conformally invariant, corresponding to the fact that the D6 branes lift to pure geometry in M-theory. The determination of the moduli space relies crucially on the 1-loop contributions to charges and OPE's of monopole operators in these field theories. The ge…
