With the aim at quantitatively investigating the longstanding problem concerning the effect of short range nucleon-nucleon correlations on scattering processes at high energies, the total neutron-nucleus cross section is calculated within a parameter-free approach which, for the first time, takes into account, simultaneously, central, spin, isospin and tensor nucleon-nucleon (NN) correlations, and Glauber elastic and Gribov inelastic shadowing corrections. Nuclei ranging from 4He to 208Pb and incident neutron momenta in the range 3 GeV/c - 300 GeV/c are considered; the commonly used approach which approximates the square of the nuclear wave function by a product of one-body densities is carefully analyzed, showing that NN correlations can play a non-negligible role in high energy scattering off nuclei.
It is suggested that the full nucleus-nucleus potential consists of the macroscopic and shell-correction parts. The deep sub-barrier fusion hindrance takes place in a nucleus-nucleus system with a strong negative shell-correction contribution to the full heavy-ion potential, while a strong positive shell-correction contribution to the full potential leads to weak enhancement of the deep sub-barrier fusion cross section.
Reaction cross-sections are calculated using the Coulomb modified Glauber model for deformed target nuclei. The deformed nuclear matter density of the target is expanded into multipoles of order k = 0,2,4.The reaction cross-sections between some spherical and deformed nuclei are studied at energy range (10-1000 MeV/nucleon). The most significant effects in the intermediate energy range are the Coulomb field and in-medium effect that modified the trajectory of the incident beams. Introducing the deformation effect beside the Coulomb field and in-medium effect improves the agreement with the exp…
Spectra of levels and transition rates are calculated for the odd--odd particle--hole neutron excess nucleus $^{132}$In in the framework of the RPA approach.
The nucleus-nucleus interaction potential has been studied within the relativistic mean field theory. The systematics of the relativistic effects have been investigated by analyzing the relation between the potential and the bombarding energy as a function of the impact parameter. It is shown that the potential barriers are noticeably sensitive to the bombarding energy for a given impact parameter. At large bombarding energies the slope at the potential edge decreases with the impact parameter. Comparisons with a non-relativistic treatment shows that relativistic effects cannot be ignored at b…
Our present studies has shown that the mass dependence of EVF show mass asymmetry independent behaviour. This is due the fact that with increase in asymmetry, the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions and repulsive Coulomb interactions decreases, therefore EVF increases. The increase in EVF with asymmetry is more for lighter nuclei as compared to heavier nuclei due to the further less magnitude of Coulomb repulsions in lighter nuclei as compared to heavier ones.
A new model that includes the time-dependent dynamics of the single-particle (s.p.) motion in conjunction with the macroscopic evolution of the system is proposed for describing the compound nucleus (CN) formation in fusion of heavy nuclei. The diabaticity initially keeps the entrance system around its contact configuration, but the gradual transition from the diabatic to the adiabatic potential energy surface (PES) leads to fusion or quasifission. Direct measurements of the probability for CN formation are crucial to discriminate between the current models.
Theoretical study of systematics of neutron scattering cross sections on various materials for neutron energies up to several hundred MeV are of practical importance. In this paper, we analysed the experimental neutron scattering total cross sections from 20MeV to 550MeV using Ramsauer model for nuclei ranging from Be to Pb.
The neutron-rich N=66 isotonic and A=106 isobaric chains, covering regions with varying types of collectivity, are interpreted in the framework of the interacting boson model. Level energies and electric quadrupole transition probabilities are compared with available experimental information. The calculations for the known nuclei in the two chains are extrapolated towards the neutron-rich nucleus $^{106}$Zr.
Some one-neutron halo nuclei can emit a proton in a beta decay of the halo neutron. The branching ratio towards this rare decay mode is calculated within a two-body potential model of the initial core+neutron bound state and final core+proton scattering states. The decay probability per second is evaluated for the $^{11}$Be, $^{19}$C and $^{31}$Ne one-neutron halo nuclei. It is very sensitive to the neutron separation energy.
Systematic alpha-nucleus folding potentials are used to analyze alpha-decay half-lives of superheavy nuclei. Preformation factors of about several per cent are found for all nuclei under study. The systematic behavior of the preformation factors and the volume integrals of the potentials allows to predict alpha-decay energies and half-lives for unknown nuclei. Shell closures can be determined from measured alpha-decay energies using the discontinuity of the volume integral at shell closures. For the first time a double shell closure is predicted for Z_magic = 132, N_magic = 194, and A_magic = …
We investigate parity violation in neutron-nucleus collisions at very low energy region $(E \leq 100 \ev)$, including resonance states. We use the coupled channel formalism for resonances with radiative emission. The parity mixing between resonances with opposite parities is taken into account. Finally, our theory is applied to $n-^{139}$La collision and relevant remarks are given.
Using a hadron-string cascade model, JPCIAE, we study the effect of nuclear deformation on J/Psi suppression in the collision of uranium nuclei at 200A GeV/c. We find that the J/Psi survival probability is much smaller if the major axes of both deformed nuclei are along the beam direction than if they are perpendicular to the beam direction.
The possibility of synthesizing a doubly magic superheavy nucleus, $^{298}114_{184}$, is investigated on the basis of fluctuation-dissipation dynamics. In order to synthesize this nucleus, we must generate more neutron-rich compound nuclei because of the neutron emissions from excited compound nuclei. The compound nucleus $^{304}114$ has two advantages to achieving a high survival probability. First, because of small neutron separation energy and rapid cooling, the shell correction energy recovers quickly. Secondly, owing to neutron emissions, the neutron number of the nucleus approaches that …
We theoretically investigate the elastic scattering of 50-MeV $Σ^-$ hyperons from $^{28}$Si and $^{208}$Pb in order to clarify the radial distribution of $Σ$-nucleus (optical) potentials. The angular distributions of differential cross sections are calculated using several potentials that can explain experimental data of the $Σ^-$ atomic X-ray and ($π^-$, $K^+$) reaction spectra simultaneously. The magnitude and oscillation pattern of the angular distributions are understood by the use of nearside/farside decompositions of their scattering amplitudes. It is shown that the resultant angular dis…
Shell model wave functions have been used to form microscopic g-folding optical potentials with which elastic scattering data from 8He, 10,11C, and 18,20,22O scattering on hydrogen has been analyzed. Those potentials, the effective two-nucleon interaction used in their formation, and the shell model details, then have been used in distorted wave approximation calculations of differential cross sections from inelastic scattering to the first excited states of five of those radioactive ions.
In this work we study the charge-exchange reaction to Isobaric Analog State using two types of transition densities. We show that for projectiles that do not probe the interior of the nucleus but mostly the surface of this nucleus, distinct differences in the cross-section arise when the two types of transition densities are employed. We demonstrate this by considering the (3He,t) reaction.
We study neutral current neutrino-nucleus reaction cross-sections for Mn, Fe, Co and Ni isotopes. An earlier study for a few selected nuclei has shown that in the supernova environment the cross sections are increased for low energy neutrinos due to finite-temperature effects. Our work supports this finding for a much larger set of nuclei. Furthermore we extend previous work to higher neutrino energies considering allowed and forbidden multipole contributions to the cross sections. The allowed contributions are derived from large-scale shell model calculations of the Gamow-Teller strength, whi…
Neutron total reaction cross sections at 45, 50, 55, 60, 65, and 75 MeV from nuclei 12C, 28Si, 56Fe, 90Zr, and 208Pb have been measured and are compared with (microscopic) optical model predictions. The optical potentials were obtained in coordinate space by full folding effective nucleon-nucleon interactions with realistic nuclear ground state density matrices. Good to excellent agreement is found.
A formation zone intranuclear cascade model is applied to peripheral nucleus-nucleus collisions. We calculate the excitation energies of prefragments, treat their further nuclear disintegration and introduce a model for nuclear deexcitation by photon emission. Results are compared to data on target associated particle production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. We discuss implications of these models to the description of particle production in the fragmentation regions. Special emphasis is put on applications for air showers induced by cosmic ray nuclei and for residual nucleus production at he…
In order to clear up the sensitivity of the nucleus-nucleus scattering to the nuclear matter distributions of exotic halo nuclei, we have calculated differential cross sections for elastic scattering of the $^6$He and $^{11}$Li nuclei on several nuclear targets at the energy of 0.8 GeV/nucleon with different assumed nuclear density distributions in $^6$He and $^{11}$Li.
The ground state band was recently observed in the superheavy nucleus 256Rf. We study the rotational properties of 256Rf and its neighboring even-even nuclei by using a cranked shell model (CSM) with the pairing correlations treated by a particle-number conserving (PNC) method in which the blocking effects are taken into account exactly. The kinematic and dynamic moments of inertia of the ground state bands in these nuclei are well reproduced by the theory. The spin of the lowest observed state in 256Rf is determined by comparing the experimental kinematic moments of inertia with the PNC-CSM c…
Level structure of 9Be is investigated calculating poles of the alpha alphar n three-body scattering amplitude in the complex energy plane. We find 10 levels, which make rotational bands in both positive and negative parities. All of them, except 7/2^+, have been observed experimentally and the corresponding positions and widths reasonably well matched. The 7/2^+ has a large width, and therefore has not been found, but may cause a noise in the experiment. No other levels are needed to explain the existing experimental observables below 11.28 MeV, where the 9th excited state exists. We definite…
By introducing a mass asymmetry in a non-Borromean three-body system, without changing the energy relations, the virtual state pole cannot move from the negative real axis of the complex energy plane (with nonzero width) and become a resonance, because the analytical structure of the unitarity cuts remains the same.
The structure of the isovector dipole resonance in neutron-rich calcium isotope, $^{60}Ca$, has been investigated by implementing a careful treatment of the differences of neutron and proton radii in the continuum random phase approximation ($RPA$). The calculations have taken into account the current estimates of the neutron skin. The estimates of the escape widths for direct neutron decay from the pygmy dipole resonance ($PDR$) were shown rather wide, implicating a strong coupling to the continuum. The width of the giant dipole resonance ($GDR$) was evaluated, bringing on a detailed discussi…
Theoretical study of systematics of neutron scattering cross sections on various materials for neutron energies up to several hundred MeV are of practical importance. In this paper, we analysed various cross sections of neutron-nucleus (n-N) scattering for several systems in the energy range of 50-250 MeV, predicted by the optical model using Koning-Delaroche potentials. We perform the Ramsauer model parameterization of total scattering cross sections and derive the systematics of the Ramsauer model parameters. We propose an empirical approach to successfully predict the energy dependence of t…
We study the sensitivity of the neutron skin thickness, $S$, in a $^{208}$Pb nucleus to the addition of nucleon-sigma-rho coupling corrections to a selection (PK1, NL3, S271, Z271) of interactions in relativistic mean field model. The PK1 and NL3 effective interactions lead to a minimum value of $S$ = 0.16 fm in comparison with the original value of $S$ = 0.28 fm. The S271 and Z271 effective interactions yield even smaller values of $S$ = 0.11 fm, which are similar to those for nonrelativistic mean field models. A precise measurement of the neutron radius, and therefore $S$, in $^{208}$Pb will…
Relativistic mean field (RMF) theory is applied to investigate the properties of the radioactive neutron-rich doubly magic nucleus $^{132}$Sn and the corresponding isotopes and isotones. The two-neutron and two-proton separation energies are well reproduced by the RMF theory. In particular, the RMF results agree with the experimental single-particle spectrum in $^{132}$Sn as well as the Nilsson spin-orbit parameter $C$ and orbit-orbit parameter $D$ thus extracted, but remarkably differ from the traditional Nilsson parameters. Furthermore, the present results provide a guideline for the isospin…
Neutrino-nucleus coherent elastic scattering provides a theoretically appealing way to measure the neutron part of nuclear form factors. Using an expansion of form factors into moments, we show that neutrinos from stopped pions can probe not only the second moment of the form factor (the neutron radius) but also the fourth moment. Using simple Monte Carlo techniques for argon, germanium, and xenon detectors of 3.5 tonnes, 1.5 tonnes, and 300 kg, respectively, we show that the neutron radii can be found with an uncertainty of a few percent when near a neutrino flux of $3\times10^{7}$ neutrinos/…
The semi-microscopic potential between heavy nuclei is evaluated for various colliding ions in the approach of frozen densities in the framework of the extended Thomas-Fermi approximation with hbar^2 correction terms in the kinetic energy density functional. The proton and neutron densities of each nucleus are obtained in the Hartree-Fock-BCS approximation with SkM* parameter set of the Skyrme force. A simple expression for the nuclear interaction potential between spherical nuclei is presented. It is shown that muon bound with light projectile induces the superheavy elements production in nuc…
The connection of synthesis of long-lived superheavy nuclei and existence of the island of stability with the choice of realistic nuclear potential is discussed: the behaviour of the average field of nuclei is an important element of nuclear models. It is also shown that it is just Dubna that possesses the priority both in the recent synthesis of a superheavy nucleus with charge Z=114 and in its theoretical prediction made 35 years ago. Possible sizes of the island of stability of superheavy nuclei are considered.
Reaction and elastic differential cross sections are calculated for light nuclei in the framework of the Glauber theory. The optical phase-shift function is evaluated by Monte Carlo integration. This enables us to use the most accurate wave functions and calculate the phase-shift functions without approximation. Examples of proton nucleus (e.g. p-$^6$He, p-$^6$Li) and nucleus-nucleus (e.g. $^6$He$-^{12}$C) scatterings illustrate the effectiveness of the method. This approach gives us a possibility of a more stringent analysis of the high-energy reactions of halo nuclei.
For nuclei near a maximum of the neutron strength function, the secular dependence on energy E of s-wave partial neutron widths differs from the canonical form given by the square root of E. We derive the universal form of that dependence and show that it is expected to significantly influence the analysis of neutron resonance data.
The structure of Ne, Na, Mg, Al, Si and S nuclei near the neutron drip-line region is investigated in the frame-work of relativistic meannfield (RMF) and non-relativistic Skyrme Hartree-Fock formalisms. The drip-line of these nuclei are pointed out. We analysed the large deformation structures and many of these neutron rich nuclei are quite deformed. New magic number are seen for these deformed nuclei.
A short review of the present knowledge of the nucleons distribution in nuclei is given. A proposal is made about a possible measurements of the neutron distribution through polarized electron scattering off nuclei.
alpha-nucleus potentials are one important ingredient for the understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy neutron-deficient p nuclei in the astrophysical gamma-process where these p nuclei are produced by a series of (gamma,n), (gamma,p), and (gamma, alpha) reactions. I present an improved alpha-nucleus potential at the astrophysically relevant sub-Coulomb energies which is derived from the analysis of alpha decay data and from a previously established systematic behavior of double-folding potentials.
The total neutron-Nucleus cross section has been calculated within an approach which takes into account nucleon-nucleon correlations, Glauber multiple scattering and inelastic shadowing corrections. Nuclear targets ranging from 4He to 208Pb and neutron incident momentum ranging from 3 to 300 GeV/c, have been considered. Correlations have been introduced by two different approaches leading to the same results. The commonly used approximation, consisting in treating nuclear effects only by a product of one-body densities, is carefully analyzed and it is shown that the effects of realistic correl…
Eta-mesic nucleus or the quasibound nuclear state of an eta ($η$) meson in a nucleus is caused by strong-interaction force alone. This new type of nuclear species, which extends the landscape of nuclear physics, has been extensively studied since its prediction in 1986. In this paper, we review and analyze in great detail the models of the fundamental $η$--nucleon interaction leading to the formation of an $η$--mesic nucleus, the methods used in calculating the properties of a bound $η$, and the approaches employed in the interpretation of the pertinent experimental data. In view of the succes…
The set of parameters for alpha-nucleus potential is derived by using the data for both the alpha-decay half-lives and the fusion cross-sections around the barrier for reactions alpha+40Ca, alpha+59Co, alpha+208Pb. The alpha-decay half-lives are obtained in the framework of a cluster model using the WKB approximation. The evaluated alpha-decay half-lives and the fusion cross-sections agreed well with the data. Fusion reactions between alpha-particle and heavy nuclei can be used for both the formation of very heavy nuclei and spectroscopic studies of the formed compound nuclei.
A simple formula is derived that describes how the Coulomb interaction affects the proton radius in nuclei. It determines the difference between neutron and proton radii in nuclei with N approx Z. It also provides an estimate for the difference between the radii of the Z core neutrons and the protons in nuclei with a large neutron excess. The results obtained from the derived formula are compared with radii calculated in a Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculation.
A Multi-Channel Algebraic Scattering (MCAS) theory is presented with which the properties of a compound nucleus are found from a coupled-channel problem. The method defines both the bound states and resonances of the compound nucleus, even if the compound nucleus is particle unstable. All resonances of the system are found no matter how weak and/or narrow. Spectra of mass-7 nuclei and of {}^{15}F, and MCAS results for a radiative capture cross section are presented.
The observed cross sections of quasi-elastic scattering of 6He, 7Be, and 8B nuclei by 12C nuclei are described within the framework of the diffraction nuclear model and the model of nucleus-nucleus scattering in the high-energy approximation with a double folding potential, for intermediate energies of the incident particles. The calculations make use of realistic distributions of nucleon densities and take account of the Coulomb interaction and inelastic scattering with excitation of low-lying collective states of the target.
The E1 strength is systematically analyzed in very neutron-rich Sn nuclei, beyond $^{132}$Sn until $^{166}$Sn, within the Relativistic Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation. The great neutron excess favors the appearance of a deformed ground state for $^{142-162}$Sn. The evolution of the low-lying strength in deformed nuclei is determined by the interplay of two factors, isospin asymmetry and deformation: while greater neutron excess increases the total low-lying strength, deformation hinders and spreads it. Very neutron rich deformed nuclei may not be as good candidates as stable spherical…
The process of alpha disintegration has been studied theoretically in the framework of a microscopic superasymmetric fission model (MSAFM). The nuclear interaction potential required for the alpha decay process has been calculated by folding in the density distribution functions of the alpha nucleus and the daughter nucleus with a realistic effective interaction. The nuclear microscopic alpha-nucleus potential thus obtained has been used along with the Coulomb interaction potential to calculate the action integral within the WKB approximation. This subsequently results in a parameter free calc…
In this study, two novel improvements for the theoretical calculation of the neutron distributions are presented. First, the available experimental proton distributions are used as a constraint rather than inferred from the calculation. Second, the recently proposed distribution formula, d3pF, is used for the neutron density, which is more detailed than the usual shapes, for the first time in nuclear structure calculation. A semi-microscopic approach for binding energy calculation is considered in this study, however, the proposed improvements can be introduced to any other approach. The groun…
We discuss some differences and similarities between electron and neutrino scattering off atomic nuclei. We find that, in the giant resonance region, the two processes excite different nuclear modes, therefore the weak and the electromagnetic nuclear responses are rather different. In any case, the scattering of electrons and photons is the best guide we have to test the validity of our nuclear models and their prediction power. The experience in describing electromagnetic excitations of the nucleus, suggests that, when the nucleus is excited in the continuum, the re-interaction between the em…
Neutron scattering total cross sections have been estimated from nuclei ranging in mass 6 to 238 and for neutron energies 10 MeV to 600 MeV using a simple function of three parameters. These total cross sections have also been calculated using coordinate space optical potentials formed by full folding effective two-nucleon (NN) interactions with one body density matrix elements (OBDME) of the nuclear ground states. Adjusting the theoretically defined parameter values has enabled us to fit the actual measured data. The simple functional parameter values vary smoothly with mass and energy.
Proton-neutron, neutron-neutron and proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pn}$, $C_{nn}$, $C_{pp}$) are systematically investigated for $^{15}$C and other C isotopes induced collisions at different entrance channel conditions within the framework of the isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics (IDQMD) model complemented by the CRAB (correlation after burner) computation code. $^{15}$C is a prime exotic nucleus candidate due to the weakly bound valence neutron coupling with closed-neutron shell nucleus $^{14}$C. In order to study density dependence of correlation function by rem…
We review recent work on various topics related to the modification of kaon properties in nuclei. After a brief exposition of the kaon-nucleon and kaon-nucleus interaction, results from the application to kaonic atoms, renormalization of the f0 and a0 scalar resonances in nuclei and phi decay in the nucleus are shown.
We take a new look at $^{6}\textrm{He}$ halo nucleus and set up a halo effective field theory at low energies to calculate the charge form factor of ${}^{6}\textrm{He}$ system with resonant P-wave interaction. P-wave Lagrangian has been introduced and the charge form factor of ${}^{6}\textrm{He}$ halo nucleus has been obtained at Leading-Order. In this study, the mean-square charge radius of ${}^{6}\textrm{He}$ nucleus relative to ${}^{4}\textrm{He}$ core and the root-mean-square (r.m.s) charge radius of ${}^{6}\textrm{He}$ nucleus have been estimated as $\langle r_{E}^{2}\rangle=1.408\; \text…
The electric dipole moments (EDMs) of neutron-odd nuclei with even protons are systematically evaluated. We first derive the relation between the EDM and the magnetic moment operators by making use of the core polarization scheme. This relation enables us to calculate the EDM of neutron-odd nuclei without any free parameters. From this calculation, one may find the best atomic system suitable for future EDM experiments.
Using a three-body model with density-dependent contact interaction, we discuss the root mean square distance between the two valence neutrons in $^{11}$Li nuclues as a function of the center of mass of the neutrons relative to the core nucleus $^9$Li. We show that the mean distance takes a pronounced minimum around the surface of the nucleus, indicating a strong surface di-neutron correlation. We demonstrate that the pairing correlation plays an essential role in this behavior. We also discuss the di-neutron structure in the $^8$He nucleus.
Covariant density functional theory is used to analyze the evolution of low-lying M1 strength in superfluid deformed nuclei in the framework of the self-consistent Relativistic Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (RQRPA). In nuclei with a pronounced neutron excess two scissor modes are found. Besides the conventional scissor mode, where the deformed proton and neutron distributions oscillate against each other, a new soft M1 mode is found, where the deformed neutron skin oscillates in a scissor like motion against a deformed proton-neutron core.
The η-meson collision with light nuclei, ^2H, ^3H, ^3He, and ^4He, is considered on the basis of a microscopic approach which utilises Faddeev type and Lippmann-Schwinger equations. The nuclear hamiltonian is approximated by the finite rank approximation which amounts to the coherent approximation. The η-nucleus scattering length and the resonance and bound--state poles of the amplitude describing elastic scattering of η-meson by these nuclei are obtained. For each of the nuclei considered, the minimal factor enhancing the ηN--attraction that moves the poles to the quasi--bound state area of t…
We briefly review the significance of quantum corrections in the total energy of systems with voids: bubble nuclei, atomic clusters and the inhomogeneous phase of neutron stars.
We study E1 resonances, breakup and fusion reactions for weakly bound Be nuclei. The absorbing-boundary condition (ABC) is used to describe both the outgoing and incoming boundary conditions. The neutron continuum plays important roles in response and reaction of neutron drip-line nuclei.
Spectral enhancement near 2 m_π threshold in the I=J=0 channel in nuclei is shown to be a distinct signal of the partial restoration of chiral symmetry. The relevance of this phenomenon with possible detection of 2π^{0} and 2γin hadron-nucleus and photo-nucleus reactions is discussed.
Statistical spectroscopic results using the spectral distribution theory are obtained for the structure of neutron-rich light nuclei going towards the drip line and compared to experimental values available. These results will be useful for nuclear astrophysics problems where often averaged nuclear properties are adequate.
Neutron rich He nuclei have been investigated using relativistic mean field approach in co-ordinate space. Elastic partial scattering cross sections for proton scattering in inverse kinematics have been calculated using the theoretically obtained density for $^{6,8}$He and compared with experiment. The energies of the low-lying resonance states in the neutron unstable nuclei $^{5,7}$He have also been calculated and compared with experimental observations.
