We report on the quantum interference and spin accumulation on double quantum dots with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interaction, based on the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function formalism. It is shown that Rashba spin-orbit interaction can strongly affect the conductance spectrum. By gradually increasing the Rashba parameter from zero, Fano resonances in strong overlap regime continuously evolve to resolve antiresonances. This transition is ascribed to the phase shift of couplings between molecular states and the lead due to spin precession. We also show that both bias and Rashba effect strengthen the induced spin polarization in this device. For particular energy position, up- and down-spin electron occupation can intersect to form a crossing point. Spin polarization on different side of this point has opposite sign in consequence. The magnitude and direction of spin polarization are therefore controllable by tuning the dot levels and the Rashba parameter through gates.
We consider the electronic transport through a Rashba quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads. We show that the interference of localized electron states with resonant electron states leads to the appearance of the Fano-Rashba effect. This effect occurs due to the interference of bound levels of spin-polarized electrons with the continuum of electronic states with an opposite spin polarization. We investigate this Fano-Rashba effect as a function of the applied magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling.
We present results on the effects of spin-orbit coupling on the electronic structure of few-electron interacting quantum dots. The ground-state properties as a function of the number of electrons in the dot $N$ are calculated by means of spin density functional theory. We find a suppression of Hund's rule due to the competition of the Rashba effect and exchange interaction. Introducing an in-plane Zeeman field leads to a paramagnetic behavior of the dot in a closed shell configuration, and to spin texture in space.
The spin-orbit splitting of the electron levels in a two-dimensional quantum dot in a perpendicular magnetic field is studied. It is shown that at the point of an accidental degeneracy of the two lowest levels above the ground state the Rashba spin-orbit coupling leads to a level anticrossing and to mixing of spin-up and spin-down states, whereas there is no mixing of these levels due to the Dresselhaus term. We calculate the relaxation and decoherence times of the three lowest levels due to phonons. We find that the spin relaxation rate as a function of a magnetic field exhibits a cusp-like s…
Artificial lattices created by assembling atoms on a surface with scanning tunneling microscopy present a platform to create matter with tailored electronic, magnetic and topological properties. However, such artificial lattices studies to date have focused exclusively on surfaces with weak spin-orbit coupling. Here, we created artificial and coupled quantum dots by fabricating quantum corrals from iron atoms on the prototypical Rashba surface alloy, BiCu2, using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. We quantified the quantum confinement of such quantum dots with various diameter and …
We study the interference of two tunable Rashba regions in a quantum wire with one propagating mode. The transmission dips (Fano-Rashba dips) of the two regions either cross or anti cross depending on the distance between the two regions. For large separations we find Fabry-Pérot oscillations due to the interference of forwards and backwards propagating modes. At small separations overlapping evanescent modes play a prominent role, leading to an enhanced transmission and destroying the conductance dip. Analytical expressions in scattering-matrix theory are given and the relevance of the interf…
The magnetization of anisotropic quantum dots in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction has been studied for three interacting electrons in the dot. We observe unique behaviors of magnetization that are direct reflections of the anisotropy and the spin-orbit interaction parameters independently or concurrently. In particular, there are saw-tooth structures in the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization, as caused by the electron-electron interaction, that are strongly modified in the presence of large anisotropy and high strength of the spin-orbit interactions. We report the …
Quantum interference effects in rings provide suitable means to control spins at the mesoscopic scale. In this chapter we present the theory underlying spin-induced modulations of unpolarized currents in quantum rings subject to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. We discuss explicitly the connection between the conductance modulations and the geometric phase acquired by the spin during transport, as well as pathways to directly control them.
In symmetric quantum dots (QDs), it is well known that the spin-hot spot (i.e., the cusp-like structure due to the presence of degeneracy near the level or anticrossing point) is present for the pure Rashba case but is absent for the pure Dresselhaus case [Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 076805 (2005)]. Since the Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling dominates over the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in GaAs and GaSb QDs, it is important to find the exact location of the spin-hot spot or the cusp-like structure even for the pure Dresselhaus case. In this paper, for the first time, we present analytical and numerica…
We investigate the spin-orbit induced spin-interference pattern of ballistic electrons travelling along any regular polygon. It is found that the spin-interference depends strongly on the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit constants as well as on the sidelength and alignment of the polygon. We derive the analytical formulae for the limiting cases of either zero Dresselhaus or zero Rashba spin-orbit coupling, including the result obtained for a circle. We calculate the nonzero Dresselhaus and Rashba case numerically for the square, triangle, hexagon, and circle and discuss the observability of t…
We propose a scheme of spin transistor using a $T$-shaped structure with local Rashba interaction. A wide antiresonance energy gap appears due to the interplay of two types of interference, the Fano-Rashba interference and the structure interference. A large current from the gap area can be obtained via changing the Rashba strength and/or the length of the sidearm by using gate voltage. The robustness of the antiresonance gap against strong disorder is demonstrated and shows the feasibility of this structure for the real application.
Spin interference due to Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in a ballistic two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) ring conductor submitted to a bias voltage is investigated theoretically. We calculate the scattering matrices and differential conductance with lead-ring junction coupling as an adjustable parameter. Due to the interference of electronic waves traversing the ring, the differential conductance modulated by both bias voltage and SOI exhibits a diamond-shaped pattern, thus termed as \ti{Rashba diamond}. This feature offers a supplementary degree of freedom to manipulate phase interfere…
We propose an all-electrical nanoscopic structure where {\em pure} spin current is induced in the transverse voltage probes attached to {\em quantum-coherent} one-dimensional ring when conventional unpolarized charge current is injected through its longitudinal leads. Tuning of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling in semiconductor heterostructure hosting the ring generates quasi-periodic oscillations of the predicted spin Hall current due to {\em spin-sensitive quantum-interference effects} caused by the difference in Aharonov-Casher phase acquired by opposite spins states traveling clockwise and co…
Quantum interference effects in rings provide suitable means for controlling spin at mesoscopic scales. Here we apply such control mechanisms to coherent spin-dependent transport in one- and two-dimensional rings subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We first study the spin-induced modulation of unpolarized currents as a function of the Rashba coupling strength. The results suggest the possibility of all-electrical spintronic devices. Moreover, we find signatures of Berry phases in the conductance previously unnoticed. Second, we show that the polarization direction of initially polarized, tr…
We propose that n-type semiconductor quantum dots with the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin orbit interactions may be used for single electron manipulation through adiabatic transformations between degenerate states. All the energy levels are discrete in quantum dots and possess a double degeneracy due to time reversal symmetryin the presence of the Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin orbit coupling terms. We find that the presence of double degeneracy does not necessarily give rise to a finite non-Abelian (matrix) Berry phase. We show that a distorted two-dimensional harmonic potential may give rise to…
The time reversal Aharonov-Casher (AC) interference effect in the mesoscopic ring structures, based on the experiment in Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{97}, 196803 (2006), is studied theoretically. The transmission curves are calculated from the scattering matrix formalism, and the time reversal AC interference frequency is singled out from the Fourier spectra in numerical simulations. This frequency is in good agreement with analytical result. It is also shown that in the absent of magnetic field, the Altshuler-Aronov-Spivak type (time reversal) AC interference retains under the influence of strong…
Quantum transport in semiconductor nanostructures can be described theoretically in terms of the propagation and scattering of electron probability waves. Within this approach, elements of a phase-coherent electric circuit play a role similar to quantum-optical devices that can be characterised by scattering matrices. Electronic analogues of well-know optical interferometers have been fabricated and used to study special features of charge carriers in solids. We present results from our theoretical investigation into the interplay between spin precession and quantum interference in an electron…
Explicit dependencies of the local density of states and the magnetization local density of states have been obtained around magnetic point defects in a two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit interaction . The expressions are given in the Born approximation for arbitrary magnitude and orientation of the defect magnetic moment, and for arbitrary size of the constant of spin-orbit interaction alpha/. On the basis of our asymptotically exact formulas a procedure for the determination of the constant alpha/ in STM experiments is proposed. The novel analytical results are compared with…
We study spectral and transport properties of interacting quantum dots with spin. Two particular model systems are investigated: Lateral multilevel and two parallel quantum dots. In both cases different paths through the system can give rise to interference. We demonstrate that this strengthens the multilevel Kondo effect for which a simple two-stage mechanism is proposed. In parallel dots we show under which conditions the peak of an interference-induced orbital Kondo effect can be split.
We have investigated the electronic properties of elliptical quantum dots in a perpendicular external magnetic field, and in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Our work indicates that the Fock-Darwin spectra display strong signature of Rashba spin-orbit coupling even for a low magnetic field, as the anisotropy of the quantum dot is increased. An explanation of this pronounced effect with respect to the anisotropy is presented. The strong spin-orbit coupling effect manifests itself prominently in the corresponding dipole-allowed optical transitions, and hence is susceptible to d…
Coulomb interaction among electrons is found to have profound effects on the electronic properties of anisotropic quantum dots in a perpendicular external magnetic field, and in the presence of the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. This is more evident in optical transitions, which we find in this system to be highly anisotropic and super-intense, in particular, for large values of the anisotropy parameter.
We study the ground state of $N$ weakly interacting electrons (with $N\le 10$) in a two-dimensional parabolic quantum dot with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using dimensionless parameters for the Coulomb interaction, $λ\lesssim 1$, and the Rashba coupling, $α\gg 1$, the low-energy physics is characterized by an almost flat single-particle dispersion. From an analytical approach for $α\to \infty$ and $N=2$, and from numerical exact diagonalization and Hartree-Fock calculations, we find a transition from a conventional unmagnetized ground state (for $λ<λ_c$) to an orbital ferromagnet (for $…
The effect of an ac electric field on quantum transport properties in a system of three quantum dots, two of which are connected in parallel while the third is coupled to one of the other two, is investigated theoretically. Based on the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function method, the spin-dependent current, occupation number and spin accumulation can be obtained in our model. An external magnetic flux, Rashba spin orbit coupling (SOC) and intradot Coulomb interactions are considered. The magnitude of the spin-dependent average current and the positions of the photon assisted tunneling (PAT…
We have studied the BiCu$_2$/Cu(111) surface alloy using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. We observed standing waves caused by scattering off defects and step edges. Different from previous studies on similar Rashba-type surfaces, we identified multiple scattering vectors that originate from various intraband as well as interband scattering processes. A detailed energy-dependent analysis of the standing-wave patterns enables a quantitative determination of band dispersions, including the Rashba splitting. The results are in good agreement with ARPES data and demo…
In this paper, a detailed analysis of anisotropic effects on the phonon induced spin relaxation rate in III-V semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) is carried out. We show that the accidental degeneracy due to level crossing between the first and second excited states of opposite electron spin states in both isotropic and anisotropic QDs can be manipulated with the application of externally applied gate potentials. In particular, anisotropic gate potentials enhance the phonon mediated spin-flip rate and reduce the cusp-like structure to lower magnetic fields, in addition to the lower QDs radii in I…
We performed path integral simulations of spin evolution controlled by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the semiclassical regime for chaotic and regular quantum dots. The spin polarization dynamics have been found to be strikingly different from the D'yakonov-Perel' (DP) spin relaxation in bulk systems. Also an important distinction have been found between long time spin evolutions in classically chaotic and regular systems. In the former case the spin polarization relaxes to zero within relaxation time much larger than the DP relaxation, while in the latter case it evolves to a time indep…
We study theoretically phonon-assisted spin relaxation of an electron confined in an elliptical quantum dot (QD) subjected to a tilted magnetic field. In the presence of both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit terms, the relaxation rate is anisotropic with respect to the in-plane field orientation. This anisotropy originates from the interference, at nonzero tilt angle, between the two spin-orbit terms. We show that, in a narrow range of magnetic field orientations, the relaxation rate exhibits anomalous sensitivity to variations of the QD parameters. In this range, the relative change in the r…
Spin-orbit coupling effects are studied in quantum dots in InSb, a narrow-gap material. Competition between different Rashba and Dresselhaus terms is shown to produce wholesale changes in the spectrum. The large (and negative) $g$-factor and the Rashba field produce states where spin is no longer a good quantum number and intrinsic flips occur at moderate magnetic fields. For dots with two electrons, a singlet-triplet mixing occurs in the ground state, with observable signatures in intraband FIR absorption, and possible importance in quantum computation.
We present both theory and numerical-computation results for the transmission and reflection probability currents of a charged particle across a potential step in the presence of a Rashba spin-orbit interaction. By varying kinetic energy and angle of incident electrons or barrier height, different features associated with tunneling and reflection of electrons are revealed by inter-spin-channel electron tunnelings and reflections. These unique properties are further accompanied by spin-state quantum interference of either a reflected or transmitted pairs of spin-correlated electrons with the sa…
We systematically investigate electron transport through double quantum dots with particular emphasis on interference induced via multiple paths of electron propagation. By means of the slave-boson mean-field approximation, we calculate the conductance, the local density of states, the transmission probability in the Kondo regime at zero temperature. It is clarified how the Kondo-assisted transport changes its properties when the system is continuously changed among the serial, parallel and T-shaped double dots. The obtained results for the conductance are explained in terms of the Kondo reson…
We study an analytical model of a Rashba nanowire that is partially covered by and coupled to a thin superconducting layer, where the uncovered region of the nanowire forms a quantum dot. We find that, even if there is no topological superconducting phase possible, there is a trivial Andreev bound state that becomes pinned exponentially close to zero energy as a function of magnetic field strength when the length of the quantum dot is tuned with respect to its spin-orbit length such that a resonance condition of Fabry-Perot type is satisfied. In this case, we find that the Andreev bound state …
This paper presents a six-band k.p theory for wurtzite semiconductor nanostructures with cylindrical symmetry. Our work extends the formulation of Vahala and Sercel [Physical Review Letters 65, 239 (1990)] to the Rashba-Sheka-Pikus Hamiltonian for wurtzite semiconductors, without the need for the axial approximation. Results comparing our formulation for studying the electronic structure of wurzite quantum dots with the conventional formulation are given.
Exploiting inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) in systems with strong spin-orbit coupling promises control of spin through electric fields - crucial to achieve miniaturization in spintronic devices. Delivering on this promise requires a two-dimensional electron gas with a spin precession length shorter than the spin coherence length and a large spin splitting so that spin manipulation can be achieved over length scales of nanometers. Recently, the transition metal oxide terminations of delafossite oxides were found to exhibit a large Rashba spin splitting dominated by ISB. In this limit, the Fer…
We generalize a Landauer-type formula, using a real$\otimes$spin-space Green function technique, to treat spin-dependent transport in quantum-coherent conductors attached to two ferromagnetic contacts. The formalism is employed to study the properties of components of an exact zero-temperature conductance matrix ${\bf G}$, as well as their mesoscopic fluctuations, describing injection and detection of a spin-polarized current in a two-dimensional system where electrons exhibit an interplay between Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling and phase-coherent propagation through a disordered medium. Stron…
We study spin relaxation and decoherence in a GaAs quantum dot due to spin-orbit interaction. We derive an effective Hamiltonian which couples the electron spin to phonons or any other fluctuation of the dot potential. We show that the spin decoherence time $T_2$ is as large as the spin relaxation time $T_1$, under realistic conditions. For the Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit couplings, we find that, in leading order, the effective magnetic field can have only fluctuations transverse to the applied magnetic field. As a result, $T_2=2T_1$ for arbitrarily large Zeeman splittings, in contrast t…
We investigate heavy-hole spin relaxation and decoherence in quantum dots in perpendicular magnetic fields. We show that at low temperatures the spin decoherence time is two times longer than the spin relaxation time. We find that the spin relaxation time for heavy holes can be comparable to or even longer than that for electrons in strongly two-dimensional quantum dots. We discuss the difference in the magnetic-field dependence of the spin relaxation rate due to Rashba or Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling for systems with positive (i.e., GaAs quantum dots) or negative (i.e., InAs quantum dots) …
In traditional approaches of obtaining quantized acoustoelectric current, a narrow channel is fabricated to form quantum dots, which hold a fixed number of electrons at a certain depth. We propose a natural way of forming quantum dots without the narrow channel, by the interference of two surface acoustic waves (SAWs) propagating across each other. A wide transportation area is defined by the usual (but widely separated) split-gate structure with another independent gate in between. This design can increase the quantized current by one to two orders of magnitude. The three-gate structure also …
We investigate theoretically how the spin-orbit Dresselhaus and Rashba effects influence the electronic structure of quasi-one-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots, similar to those that can be formed inside semiconductor nanorods. We calculate electronic energy levels, eigen-functions, and effective g-factors for coupled, double dots made out of different materials, especially GaAs and InSb. We show that by choosing the form of the lateral confinement, the contributions of the Dresselhaus and Rashba terms can be tuned and suppressed, and we consider several possible cases of interest. We al…
We discuss the effect of quantum interference on transport through a quantum dot system. We introduce an indirect coherent coupling parameter alpha, which provides constructive/destructive interference in the transport current depending on its phase and the magnetic flux. We estimate the current through the quantum dot system using the non-equilibrium Green's function method as well as the master equation method in the sequential tunneling regime. The visibility of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation is evaluated. For a large inter-dot Coulomb interaction, the current is strongly suppressed by the q…
Thermoelectric transport phenomena in a single-level quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads are considered theoretically in the Kondo regime. The dot is described by the Anderson model with Rashba type spin-orbit interaction. The finite-U mean field slave boson technique is used to describe the transport characteristics, like heat conductance, thermopower, thermoelectric efficiency (figure of merit). The role of quantum interference effects in thermoelectric parameters is also analyzed.
A spin interferometer utilizing the Rashba effect is proposed. The novel design is composed of a one-dimensional (1D) straight wire and a 1D half-ring. By calculating the norm of the superposed wave function, we derive analytical expressions to describe the spin interference spectrum as a function of the Rashba coupling strength. Presented spin interference results are identified to include (i) the quantum-mechanical 4pi rotation effect, (ii) geometric effect, and (iii) Shubnikov-de Haas-like beating effect.
Quantum oscillations of the spin conductance through regular and chaotic 2D quantum dots under the varying Rashba spin orbit interaction and at zero magnetic field have been numerically calculated by summing up the spin evolution matrices for classical transmitting trajectories. Fourier analysis of these oscillations showed power spectra strongly dependent on the dot geometry. For narrow rings the spectra are dominated by a single peak in accordance with previous analytic results. In other geometries the spectra are represented by multiple peaks for regular QD and quasicontinuum for chaotic QD…
The effect of Rashba spin-orbit interaction and anisotropic strain on the electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of artificial graphene-like superlattice composed of InAs-GaAs quantum dots has been considered theoretically. The electronic energy dispersions have been obtained using Green's function formalism in combination with Fourier transformation to the reciprocal space and an exact diagonalization technique. We have observed a splitting of Dirac points and appearance of edditional Dirac-like points due to the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Breaking of the hexagonal symmetry of t…
In order to investigate the effects of interference and interaction in adiabatic pumping, we consider an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) interferometer with a quantum dot embedded either in one or in both arms. We employ a real-time formalism and we perform an expansion both in the tunnel-coupling strengths between dot and leads and in the pumping frequency, taking into account the Coulomb interaction non perturbatively. We find that pumping in a single-dot AB interferometer has a peristaltic but phase-coherent character. In a double-dot AB interferometer, we find a pumping mechanism that relies purely on …
We study the conductance of an electron interferometer formed in a two dimensional electron gas between a nanostructured quantum contact and the charged tip of a scanning gate microscope. Measuring the conductance as a function of the tip position, thermally induced rings may be observed in addition to Fabry-Pérot interference fringes spaced by half the Fermi wavelength. If the contact is made of a quantum dot opened in the middle of a Kondo valley, we show how the location of the rings allows to measure by electron interferometry the magnetic moment of the dot above the Kondo temperature.
We develop a theory of designing slit experiments in two-dimensional electron systems with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction. By simulating the spatiotemporal dynamics of electrons passing through a single slit or a double slit, we find that the interference fringes of the electron probability density attain specific spin orientations via the precession of spins around effective magnetic fields mediated by the Rashba spin-orbit interaction whose directions are determined by the propagation path. The spin orientations of the fringes can be controlled by tuning the Rashba spin-orbit parameter, w…
We investigate theoretically the properties of a weak link between two superconducting leads, which has the form of a non-superconducting nanowire with a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling caused by an electric field. In the Coulomb blockade regime of single-electron tunneling, we find that such a weak link acts as a "spin splitter" of the spin states of Cooper pairs tunneling through the link, to an extent that depends on the direction of the electric field. We show that the Josephson current is sensitive to interference between the resulting two transmission channels, one where the spins of b…
We study the variation in the Land$\acute{\text{e}}$ g-factor of electron spins induced by both anisotropic gate potentials and magnetic fields in InAs quantum dots for possible implementation towards solid state quantum computing. In this paper, we present analytical expressions and numerical simulations of the variation in the Land$\acute{\text{e}}$ g-factor for both isotropic and anisotropic quantum dots. Using both analytical techniques and numerical simulations, we show that the Rashba spin-orbit coupling has a major contribution in the variation of the g-factor with electric fields befor…
Electric weak links, the term used for those parts of an electrical circuit that provide most of the resistance against the flow of an electrical current, are important elements of many nanodevices. Quantum dots, nanowires and nano-constrictions that bridge two bulk conductors (or superconductors) are examples of such weak links. Here we consider nanostructures where the electronic spin-orbit interaction is strong in the weak link but is unimportant in the bulk conductors, and explore theoretically the role of the spin-orbit active weak link (which we call a "Rashba spin splitter") as a source…
We investigate the spin of the ground state of a geometrically confined many-electron system. For atoms, shell structure simplifies this problem-- the spin is prescribed by the well-known Hund's rule. In contrast, quantum dots provide a controllable setting for studying the interplay of quantum interference and electron-electron interactions in general cases. In a generic confining potential, the shell-structure argument suggests a singlet ground state for an even number of electrons. The interaction among the electrons produces, however, accidental occurrences of spin-triplet ground states, e…
In this paper we study the interplay between interference effects in quantum dots (manifested through the appearance of Fano resonances in the conductance), and interactions taken into account in the self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation. In the non-interacting case we find that interference may lead to the observation of more than one conductance peak per dot level as a function of an applied gate voltage. This may explain recent experimental findings, which were thought to be caused by interaction effects. For the interacting case we find a wide variety of different interesting phenomen…

The Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions are both shown to yield the low temperature spin-Hall effect for strongly localized electrons coupled to phonons. A frequency-dependent electric field ${\bf E}(ω)$ generates a spin-polarization current, normal to ${\bf E}$, due to interference of hopping paths. At zero temperature the corresponding spin-Hall conductivity is real and is proportional to $ω^{2}$. At non-zero temperatures the coupling to the phonons yields an imaginary term proportional to $ω$. The interference also yields persistent spin currents at thermal equilibrium, at ${\bf …
We consider a single-level quantum dot coupled to two leads which are ferromagnetic in general. Apart from tunneling processes conserving electron spin, we also include processes associated with spin-flip of tunneling electrons, which appear due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Charge and heat currents are calculated within the non-equilibrium Green's function technique. When the electrodes are half-metallic (fully spin polarized), the Rashba spin-orbit coupling leads to Fano-like interference effects, which result in an enhanced thermoelectric response. It is also shown that such a system can o…
Transport by helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall insulator is experimentally characterized by a weakly temperature-dependent mean free path of a few microns and by reproducible conductance oscillations, challenging proposed theoretical explanations. We consider a model where edge electrons experience spatially random Rashba spin-orbit coupling and couple to a magnetic impurity with spin S >= 1/2. In a finite bias steady state, we find for S > 1/2 an impurity induced resistance with a temperature dependence in agreement with experiments. Since backscattering is elastic, interference betw…
We investigate theoretically the combined effects of the electron-electron and the Rashba spin-orbit interactions on two electrons confined in quasi-one-dimensional AlInSb-based double quantum dots. We calculate the two-electron wave functions and explore the interplay between these two interactions on the energy levels and the spin of the states. The energy spectrum as a function of an applied magnetic field shows crossings and anticrossings between triplet and singlet states, associated with level mixing induced by the spin-orbit coupling. We find that the fields at which these crossings occ…
In mesoscopic electronic systems, the Fabry-Pérot (FP) oscillation is observed in various 1D devices. As for higher dimensions, numerous transverse channels usually lead to dephasing that quenches the overall oscillation of the conductance. Up to now, the FP oscillation in 2D electronic systems is only reported in graphene-based devices, and very recently, the \emph{pn} junctions of inverted InAs/GaSb double quantum well [Phys. Rev. X 10, 031007 (2020)]. In the latter, the band shape of a sombrero hat plays an essential role, which introduces a novel mechanism of electron-hole hybridization fo…
We investigate the spin relaxation and decoherence in a single-electron graphene quantum dot with Rashba and intrinsic spin-orbit interactions. We derive an effective spin-phonon Hamiltonian via the Schrieffer-Wolff transformation in order to calculate the spin relaxation time T_1 and decoherence time T_2 within the framework of the Bloch-Redfield theory. In this model, the emergence of a non-monotonic dependence of T_1 on the external magnetic field is attributed to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling-induced anticrossing of opposite spin states. A rapid decrease of T_1 occurs when the spin and or…
