In mesoscopic electronic systems, the Fabry-Pérot (FP) oscillation is observed in various 1D devices. As for higher dimensions, numerous transverse channels usually lead to dephasing that quenches the overall oscillation of the conductance. Up to now, the FP oscillation in 2D electronic systems is only reported in graphene-based devices, and very recently, the \emph{pn} junctions of inverted InAs/GaSb double quantum well [Phys. Rev. X 10, 031007 (2020)]. In the latter, the band shape of a sombrero hat plays an essential role, which introduces a novel mechanism of electron-hole hybridization for the 2D FP oscillation. In this work, we propose that such a scenario can be generalized to the 2D planar junction composed of low-density Rashba gas, where the band bottom possesses a sombrero hat shape as well. We show that the backscattering between the outer and inner Fermi circles dominates the FP interference and significantly suppresses the dephasing effect between different transverse channels, which leads to a visible oscillation of the tunneling conductance. Specially, the visibility of the oscillating pattern can be enhanced by applying interface barriers, in contrast to that in the InAs/GaSb double quantum well. Our results provide a promising way for the implementation of the FP oscillation in the 2D electron gas.
We study the interference of two tunable Rashba regions in a quantum wire with one propagating mode. The transmission dips (Fano-Rashba dips) of the two regions either cross or anti cross depending on the distance between the two regions. For large separations we find Fabry-Pérot oscillations due to the interference of forwards and backwards propagating modes. At small separations overlapping evanescent modes play a prominent role, leading to an enhanced transmission and destroying the conductance dip. Analytical expressions in scattering-matrix theory are given and the relevance of the interf…
We investigate the transmission properties of a spin transistor coupled to two quantum point contacts acting as spin injector and detector. In the Fabry-Perot regime, transport is mediated by quasibound states formed between tunnel barriers. Interestingly, the spin-orbit interaction of the Rashba type can be tuned in such a way that nonuniform Rashba fields can point along distinct directions in different points of the sample. We discuss both spin-conserving and spin-flipping transitions as the spin-orbit angle of orientation increases from parallel to antiparallel configurations. Spin precess…
We demonstrate that giant Faraday rotation in graphene in the terahertz range due to the cyclotron resonance is further increased by constructive Fabry-Perot interference in the supporting substrate. Simultaneously, an enhanced total transmission is achieved, making this effect doubly advantageous for graphene-based magneto-optical applications. As an example, we present far-infrared spectra of epitaxial multilayer graphene grown on the C-face of 6H-SiC, where the interference fringes are spectrally resolved and a Faraday rotation up to 0.15 radians (9°) is attained. Further, we discuss and co…
We investigate the chemical reactivity of molecular populations confined inside a nanofluidic Fabry-P{é}rot cavity. Due to strong light-matter interactions developing between a resonant electromagnetic cavity-mode and the electric dipole moment of the confined molecules, a polariton is formed. The former gets dressed by environmental vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom of the solvent. We call the resulting polariton dressed by its cloud of environmental excitation a ''reacton'', since it further undergoes chemical reactions. We characterize how the reacton formation modifies the kine…
Three-dimensional topological insulator (3D TI) nanowires display various interesting magnetotransport properties that can be attributed to their spin-momentum-locked surface states such as quasiballistic transport and Aharonov-Bohm oscillations. Here, we focus on the transport properties of a 3D TI nanowire with a gated section that forms an electronic Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer that can be tuned to act as a surface-state filter or energy barrier. By tuning the carrier density and length of the gated section of the wire, the interference pattern can be controlled and the nanowire can bec…
We study theoretically the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in one- and two-dimensions in presence of a Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. We show that rotation of the spin of conduction electrons due to SO coupling causes a twisted RKKY interaction between localized spins which consists of three different terms: Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, and Ising interactions. We also show that the effective spin Hamiltonian reduces to the usual RKKY interaction Hamiltonian in the twisted spin space where the spin quantization axis of one localized spin is rotated.
We propose an intrinsic 3D Fabry-Pérot type interferometer, coined "higher-order interferometer", that utilizes the chiral hinge states of second-order topological insulators and cannot be equivalently mapped to 2D space because of higher-order topology. Quantum interference patterns in the two-terminal conductance of this interferometer are controllable not only by tuning the strength but also, particularly, by rotating the direction of the magnetic field applied perpendicularly to the transport direction. Remarkably, the conductance exhibits a characteristic beating pattern with multiple fre…
We study a ballistic spin field-effect transistor (SFET) with special attention to the issue of multi-channel effects. The conductance modulation of the SFET as a function of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength is numerically examined for the number of channels ranging from a few to close to 100. Even with the ideal spin injector and collector, the conductance modulation ratio, defined as the ratio between the maximum and minimum conductances, decays rapidly and approaches one with the increase of the channel number. It turns out that the decay is considerably faster when the Rashba spin-o…
We study the energy levels of non-interacting electrons confined to move in two-dimensional billiard regions and having a spin-dependent dynamics due to a finite Rashba spin splitting. The Green's function for such Rashba billiards is constructed analytically and used to find the area and perimeter contributions to the density of states, as well as the smooth counting function. We show that, in contrast to systems with spin-rotational invariance, Rashba billiards always possess a negative energy spectrum. A semi-classical analysis is presented to interpret the singular behavior of the density …
In this work, the classical and the quantum capacitances are calculated for a Fabry-Pérot interferometer operating in the integer quantized Hall regime. We first consider a rotationally symmetric electrostatic confinement potential and obtain the widths and the spatial distribution of the insulating (incompressible) circular strips using a charge density profile stemming from self-consistent calculations. Modelling the electrical circuit of capacitors composed of metallic gates and incompressible/compressible strips, we investigate the conditions to observe Aharonov-Bohm (quantum mechanical ph…
We study normal transport and the sub-gap spectrum of superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions made of semiconducting nanowires with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We focus, in particular, on the role of confinement effects in long ballistic junctions. In the normal regime, scattering at the two contacts gives rise to two distinct features in conductance, Fabry-Perot resonances and Fano dips. The latter arise in the presence of a strong Zeeman field $B$ that removes a spin sector in the leads (\emph{helical} leads), but not in the central region. Conversely, a helical central r…
A spin interferometer utilizing the Rashba effect is proposed. The novel design is composed of a one-dimensional (1D) straight wire and a 1D half-ring. By calculating the norm of the superposed wave function, we derive analytical expressions to describe the spin interference spectrum as a function of the Rashba coupling strength. Presented spin interference results are identified to include (i) the quantum-mechanical 4pi rotation effect, (ii) geometric effect, and (iii) Shubnikov-de Haas-like beating effect.
We have recently calculated shot noise for entangled and spin-polarized electrons in novel beam-splitter geometries with a local Rashba s-o interaction in the incoming leads. This interaction allows for a gate-controlled rotation of the incoming electron spins. Here we present an alternate simpler route to the shot noise calculation in the above work and focus on only electron pairs. Shot noise for these shows continuous bunching and antibunching behaviors. In addition, entangled and unentangled triplets yield distinctive shot noise oscillations. Besides allowing for a direct way to identify t…
We study shot noise for spin-polarized currents and entangled electron pairs in a four-probe (beam splitter) geometry with a local Rashba spin-orbit (s-o) interaction in the incoming leads. Within the scattering formalism we find that shot noise exhibits Rashba-induced oscillations with continuous bunching and antibunching. We show that entangled states and triplet states can be identified via their Rashba phase in noise measurements. For two-channel leads we find an additional spin rotation due to s-o induced interband coupling which provides enhanced spin control. We show that the s-o intera…
Two-dimensional (2D) Rashba systems have been intensively studied in the last decade due to their unconventional physics, tunability capabilities, and potential for spin-charge interconversion when compared to conventional heavy metals. With the advent of a new generation of spin-based logic and memory devices, the search for Rashba systems with more robust and larger conversion efficiencies is expanding. Conventionally, demanding techniques such as angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy are required to determine the Rashba parameter $α_{R}$ that characterizes these systems. Here,…
We study the effect of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the Fermi arcs of topological Dirac semimetals. The Rashba coupling is induced by breaking the inversion symmetry at the surface. Remarkably, this coupling could be enhanced by the interaction with the substrate and controlled by an external electric field. We study analytically and numerically the rotation of the spin of the surface states as a function of the electron's momentum and the coupling strength. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of the spin-dependent two-terminal conductance is presented in the clean limit and with the additio…
We investigate the effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling and of a tunnel barrier on the zero conduc- tance resonances appearing in a one-dimensional conducting Aharonov-Bohm (AB) ring symmet- rically coupled to two leads. The transmission function of the corresponding one-electron problem is derived within the scattering matrix approach and analyzed in the complex energy plane with focus on the role of the tunnel barrier strength on the zero-pole structure characteristic of trans- mission (anti)resonances. The lifting of the real conductance zeros is related to the breaking of the spin-reversal…
The spin-sensitive charge oscillation, controlled by an external magnetic field, was recently proposed as a mechanism of transformations of qubits, defined as two-electron spin-charge Wannier molecules in a square quantum dot. The paper expands this idea by including the effects of Rashba type spin-orbit coupling. The problem is studied theoretically by mapping the system to an analytic effective Hamiltonian for 8 low energy states, comprising singlet and triplet on each dot diagonal. The validity of the mapping is confirmed by comparing the energy and spin of full and mapped system, and also …
We study how the Rashba spin-orbit interaction influences unconventional superconductivity in a two dimensional electron gas partially spin-polarized by a magnetic field. Somewhat surprisingly, we find that for all field orientations, only the larger Fermi surface is superconducting. When the magnetic field is oriented out-of-plane the system realizes a topological $p+ip$ pairing state. When the field is rotated in-plane the order parameter develops nodes along the field direction and finite center-of-mass-momentum pairing is realized. We demonstrate that the pairing symmetry of the system can…
We investigated the spin dynamics of two-dimensional electrons in (001) GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure using the time resolved Kerr rotation technique under a transverse magnetic field. The in-plane spin lifetime is found to be anisotropic below 150k due to the interference of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling and D'yakonov-Perel' spin relaxation. The ratio of in-plane spin lifetimes is measured directly as a function of temperature and pump power, showing that the electron density in 2DEG channel strongly affects the Rashba spin-orbit coupling.
We propose and analyze theoretically a one-dimensional solid-state electronic setup that operates as a topological charge pump in the complete absence of superimposed oscillating local voltages. The system consists of a semiconducting narrow channel with strong Rashba spin-orbit interaction patterned in a mesoscale serpentine shape. A rotating planar magnetic field serves as the external ac perturbation, and cooperates with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, which is modulated by the geometric curvature of the electronic channel to realize the topological pumping protocol originally introduced…

Using a three-dimensional spin polarimeter we have gathered evidence for the interference of spin states in photoemission from the surface alloy Sb/Ag(111). This system features a small Rashba-type spin-splitting of a size comparable to the linewidth of the quasiparticles, thus causing an intrinsic overlap between states with orthogonal spinors. Besides a small spin polarization caused by the spin-splitting, we observe a large spin polarization component in the plane normal to the quantization axis provided by the Rashba effect. Strongly suggestive of coherent spin rotation, this effect is lar…
