We analyze the phenomenology of a prolonged early epoch of matter domination by an unstable but very long-lived massive particle. This new matter domination era can help to relax some of the requirements on the primordial inflation. Its main effect is the huge entropy production produced by the decays of such particle that can dilute any possible unwanted relic, as the gravitino in supersymmetric models, and thus relax the constraints on the inflationary reheating temperature. Furthermore, a long period of matter domination reduces the number of $e$-foldings after the horizon crossing by observable perturbations and therefore the requirements on flatness of the inflationary potential. A natural candidate for such heavy, long-lived particle already present in the Standard Model of the electroweak interactions would be a heavy right-handed neutrino. In this case, we show that its decays can also generate the observed baryon asymmetry with right-handed neutrino masses well above the bound from gravitino overproduction.
We evolve the network of global strings in the matter-dominated universe by means of numerical simulations. The existence of the scaling solution is confirmed as in the radiation-dominated universe but the scaling parameter $ξ$ takes a slightly smaller value, $ξ\simeq 0.6 \pm 0.1$, which is defined as $ξ= ρ_{s} t^{2} / μ$ with $ρ_{s}$ the energy density of global strings and $μ$ the string tension per unit length. The change of $ξ$ from the radiation to the matter-dominated universe is consistent with that obtained by Albrecht and Turok by use of the one-scale model. We also study the loop dis…
We present a new scenario for the development of the Universe after the Big Bang, built on the conjecture that a vast majority of the primordial quark matter did not undergo a phase transition to normal nuclear matter, but rather split up into massive quark objects that remained stable. Hence, such primordial quark matter would make up the so-called dark matter. We discuss, mostly in qualitative terms, the consequences for galaxy formation, the origin of normal matter, the occurrence of massive black-holes in galactic centres and the cosmic gamma-ray bursts.
We demonstrate that in a vacuum-energy-dominated expansion phase, surprisingly neither the decay of matter nor matter-antimatter annihilation into relativistic particles can ever cause radiation to once again dominate over matter in the future history of the universe.
We discuss the evolution of U(1) symmetric scalar field at the inflation epoch with a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone tilt revealing after the end of exponential expansion of the Universe. The U(1) symmetry is supposed to be associated with baryon charge. It is shown that quantum fluctuations lead in natural way to baryon dominated Universe with antibaryon excess regions. The range of parameters is calculated at which the fraction of Universe occupied by antimatter and the size of antimatter regions satisfy the observational constraints, survive to the modern time and lead to effects, accessible to exp…
It is shown that quantum fluctuations due to a nontrivial gravitational background in the flat radiation dominated universe can play an important cosmological role generating nonvanishing cosmological global charge, e.g. baryon number, asymmetry. The explicit form of the fluctuations at vacuum and at finite temperature is given. Implications for particle physics are discussed.
In this paper we show that a universe dominated by two components, namely domain walls and dissipative dark matter such that the former slowly decays into the latter may drive power law cosmological acceleration consistent with the high redshift supernovae data, while the ratio between the energy densities of both components remains fixed at late times thus solving the coincidence problem of present acceleration. Likewise, we estimate the aforesaid ratio at early times.
We discuss second-order cosmological perturbations on super-Hubble scales, in a scalar field dominated universe, such as during single field inflation. In this contest we show that the gauge-invariant curvature perturbations defined on uniform density and comoving hypersurfaces coincide and that perturbations are adiabatic in the large scale limit. Since it has been recently shown that the uniform density curvature perturbation is conserved on large scales if perturbations are adiabatic, we conclude that both the uniform density and comoving curvature perturbations at second-order, in a scalar…
This Letter considers the generalized second law of gravitational thermodynamics in two scenarios featuring a phantom dominated expansion plus a black hole. The law is violated in both scenarios.
We investigate the evolution of the global string network in the radiation dominated universe by use of numerical simulations in 3+1 dimensions. We find that the global string network settles down to the scaling regime where the energy density of global strings, $ρ_{s}$, is given by $ρ_{s} = ξμ/ t^2$ with $μ$ the string tension per unit length and the scaling parameter, $ξ\sim (0.9-1.3)$, irrespective of the cosmic time. We also find that the loop distribution function can be fitted with that predicted by the so-called one scale model. Concretely, the number density, $n_{l}(t)$, of the loop wi…
The Cardassian universe is a proposed modification to the Friedmann Robertson Walker (FRW) equation in which the universe is flat, matter dominated, and accelerating. Here we generalize the original Cardassian proposal to include additional variants on the FRW equation. Specific examples are presented. In the ordinary FRW equation, the right hand side is a linear function of the energy density, $H^2 \sim ρ$. Here, instead, the right hand side of the FRW equation is a different function of the energy density, $H^2 \sim g(ρ)$. This function returns to ordinary FRW at early times, but modifies th…
We explore the relic abundance of asymmetric Dark Matter in shear--dominated universe in which it is assumed the universe is expanded anisotropically. The modified expansion rate leaves its imprint on the relic density of asymmetric Dark Matter particles if the asymmetric Dark Matter particles are decoupled in shear dominated era. We found the relic abundances for particle and anti--particle are increased. The particle and anti--particle abundances are almost in the same amount for the larger value of the shear factor $x_e$ which makes the indirect detection possible for asymmetric Dark Matter…
We study the existence of black holes in a homogeneous and isotropic expanding Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe dominated by dark energy. We show that black holes can exist in such a universe by considering some specific McVittie solutions. Although these solutions violate all three energy conditions, the FRW background does satisfy the weak energy condition.
The universe has evolved through several phases as its various constituents dominated its energy content. Candidate dark matter particles may have undergone freeze-out during any such phase. While the standard freeze-out scenarios have been explored during the radiation-dominated era, and more recently during scalar field decay, this work extends the study of dark matter freeze-out to a potential early period during which the universe is matter-dominated and its evolution adiabatic. Decoupling during an adiabatic matter dominated era changes the freeze-out dynamics, since the Hubble rate is pa…
The generalized second law of gravitational thermodynamics is examined in scenarios where the dark energy dominates the cosmic expansion. For quintessence and phantom fields this law is fulfilled but it may fail when the dark energy is in the form of a Chaplygin gas. However, if a black hole is allowed in the picture, the law can be violated if the field is of phantom type.
We study the dynamics of the quark-hadron transition for a scenario in which the Universe is matter dominated and a large amount of entropy is generated by decaying particles of mass 1--10 TeV, as suggested by a large class of superstring--inspired models. We estimate the nucleation rate and compute the mean separation between baryon fluctuations generated during the transition following their evolution up to the onset of primordial nucleosyntheisis.
We examine the transition from a fresh inflationary scenario to a radiation dominated universe when the inflaton field is coupled to gravity. We show that this transition is very natural when this coupling is $ξ=1/4$ at the end of fresh inflation. This is a very important result that shows as fresh inflation has a natural exit to the radiation dominated epoch.
A modification to the Friedmann Robertson Walker equation is proposed in which the universe is flat, matter dominated, and accelerating. An additional term, which contains only matter or radiation (no vacuum contribution), becomes the dominant driver of expansion at a late epoch of the universe. During the epoch when the new term dominates, the universe accelerates; we call this period of acceleration the Cardassian era. The universe can be flat and yet consist of only matter and radiation, and still be compatible with observations. The energy density required to close the universe is much sma…
In hybrid inflation and running mass inflation models it is possible that the inflaton field will fragment into non-topological solitons, resulting in a highly inhomogeneous post-inflation era prior to reheating. In supersymmetric models with a conventional homogeneous post-inflation era, the dynamics of flat direction scalars are determined by cH^{2} corrections to the mass squared terms, coming from the energy density of the Universe combined with Planck-scale suppressed interactions. Here we reconsider the cH^{2} corrections for a Universe dominated by inflatonic non-topological solitons. W…
Quantum fluctuations of a complex, baryonic charged scalar field caused by inflation can generate large domains, which convert later into antimatter regions. As a result the Universe can become globally matter-dominated, with minor contribution of antimatter regions. The distribution and evolution of such antimatter regions could cause every galaxy to be a harbour of an anti-star globular cluster. At the same time, the scenario does not lead to large-scale isocuvature perturbations, which would disturb observable CMB anisotropy. The existence of one of such antistar globular cluster in our Gal…
We perform detailed calculations of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies in a CDM-dominated open universe with primordial adiabatic density perturbations for a variety of reionization histories. We show that to a great extent, the CMB anisotropies depend only on the geometry of the Universe, which in a matter dominated universe is determined by $Ω$, and the optical depth to the surface of last scattering. In particular, the location of the primary Doppler peak depends primarily on $Ω$ and is fairly insensitive to the other unknown parameters, such as $Ω_b$, $h$, $Λ$, and the shape of…
Evolution of a universe with homogeneous extra dimensions is studied with the benefit of a well-chosen parameter space that provides a systematic, useful, and convenient way for analysis. In this model we find a natural evolution pattern that entails not only stable extra dimensions in the radiation-dominated era, thereby preserving essential predictions in the standard cosmology, but also the present accelerating expansion while satisfying the limit on the variation of Newtonian gravitational constant. In this natural evolution pattern the extra dimensions tend to be stabilized automatically …
We investigate in detail the leptogenesis by the decay of coherent right-handed sneutrino $\widetilde{N}$ having dominated the energy density of the early universe, which was originally proposed by HM and TY. Once the $\widetilde{N}$ dominant universe is realized, the amount of the generated lepton asymmetry (and hence baryon asymmetry) is determined only by the properties of the right-handed neutrino, regardless of the history before it dominates the universe. Moreover, thanks to the entropy production by the decay of the right-handed sneutrino, thermally produced relics are sufficiently dilu…
We reconsider the effective mass of a scalar field which interact with visible sector via Planck-suppressed coupling in supergravity framework. We focus on the radiation-dominated (RD) era after inflation. In this era, the effective mass is given by thermal average of interaction terms. To make our analysis clear, we rely on Kadanoff-Baym equations to evaluate the thermal average. We find that, in RD era, a scalar field acquires the effective mass of the order of $H$.
We study the expansion law of the universe dominated by the oscillating scalar field with non-minimal derivative coupling to gravity as G^{μν} \partial_μ ϕ\partial_ν ϕ. In this system the Hubble parameter oscillates with a frequency of the effective mass of the scalar field, which formerly caused a difficulty in analyzing how the universe expands. We find an analytical solution for power law potentials and interpret the solution in an intuitive way by using a new invariant of the system. As a result, we find marginally accelerated expansion for the quadratic potential and no accelerated expans…
We analyse the formation of cosmic structures in models where the dark matter is dominated by light gravitinos with mass of $ 100$ eV -- 1 keV, as predicted by gauge-mediated supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking models. After evaluating the number of degrees of freedom at the gravitinos decoupling ($g_*$), we compute the transfer function for matter fluctuations and show that gravitinos behave like warm dark matter (WDM) with free-streaming scale comparable to the galaxy mass scale. We consider different low-density variants of the WDM model, both with and without cosmological constant, and compare t…
String/ M-theory compactifications predict the existence of a modulus field with a mass of 100-10000 TeV. Its decay at MeV-temperatures generates large amounts of entropy and washes out any previously produced baryon asymmetry. We describe how the baryon asymmetry can be (re)generated by the modulus decay. The mechanism relates the smallness of the asymmetry to the hierarchy between the Planck- and the Fermi-scale.
Maybe not. String theory approaches to both beyond the Standard Model and Inflationary model building generically predict the existence of scalars (moduli) that are light compared to the scale of quantum gravity. These moduli become displaced from their low energy minima in the early universe and lead to a prolonged matter-dominated epoch prior to BBN. In this paper, we examine whether non-perturbative effects such as parametric resonance or tachyonic instabilities can shorten, or even eliminate, the moduli condensate and matter-dominated epoch. Such effects depend crucially on the strength of…
If a bosonic partner of a right-handed neutrino dominates the early universe sufficiently before its decay, important ingredients in the present universe are related to physics of the right-handed neutrino sector. In particular, we find that the ratio of the baryon to the dark-matter densities is given only by low-energy parameters such as a neutrino mass and a gravitino mass if the reheating temperature of inflation is much higher than $10^{12}$ GeV. Here, the gravitino is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle and the dominant component of the dark matter. The observed ratio, $Ω_…
New estimates of globular cluster distances, combined with revised ranges for input parameters in stellar evolution codes and recent estimates of the earliest redshift of cluster formation allow us to derive a new 95% confidence level lower limit on the age of the Universe of 11 Gyr. This is now definitively inconsistent with the expansion age for a flat Universe for the currently allowed range of the Hubble constant unless the cosmic equation of state is dominated by a component that violates the strong energy condition. This solidifies the case for a dark energy-dominated universe, complemen…
We examine the generation and evolution of perturbations in a universe dominated by a fluid with stiff equation of state $p=ρ$. The recently proposed Holographic Universe is an example of such a model. We compute the spectrum of scalar and tensor perturbations, without relying on a microphysical description of the $p=ρ$ fluid. The spectrum is scale invariant deep inside the Hubble horizon. In contrast, infrared perturbations that enter the Hubble horizon during the stiff fluid dominated (holographic) phase yield oscillatory and logarithmic terms in the power spectrum. We show that vector pertu…
We perform the first numerical calculation of the interplay between thermal and black hole induced leptogenesis, demonstrating that the right-handed neutrino surplus produced during the evaporation only partially mitigates the entropy dilution suffered by the thermal component. As such, the intermediate-mass regime of the right-handed neutrinos, $10^6{\rm~GeV} \lesssim M_{N} \lesssim 10^{9}{\rm~GeV}$, could not explain the observed baryon asymmetry even for fine-tuned scenarios if there existed a primordial black hole dominated era, consistent with initial black hole masses of $M_i \gtrsim \ma…
Fermions scattering off first-order phase transition bubbles, in the framework of $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\otimes U(1)$ models, may generate the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU), either at the $LR$-symmetry-breaking scale, or at the weak scale. In the latter case, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is related to CP violation in the $K_0$--$\bar K_0$ system.
We study production of self-interacting dark matter (DM) during an early matter-dominated phase. As a benchmark scenario, we consider a model where the DM consists of singlet scalar particles coupled to the visible Standard Model (SM) sector via the Higgs portal. We consider scenarios where the initial DM abundance is set by either the usual thermal freeze-out or an alternative freeze-in mechanism, where DM was never in thermal equilibrium with the SM sector. For the first time, we take the effect of self-interactions within the hidden sector into account in determining the DM abundance, remin…
We consider a modified gravity model with a massive graviton, but which nevertheless only propagates two gravitational degrees of freedom and which is free of ghosts. We show that non-singular bouncing cosmological background solutions can be generated. In addition, the mass term for the graviton prevents anisotropies from blowing up in the contracting phase and also suppresses the spectrum of gravitational waves compared to that of the scalar cosmological perturbations. This addresses two of the main problems of the matter bounce scenario.
We explore the prospect of producing primordial black holes around the solar mass region during an early matter domination epoch. The early matter-dominated epoch can arise when a moduli field comes to dominate the energy density of the Universe prior to big bang nucleosynthesis. The absence of radiation pressure during a matter-dominated epoch enhances primordial black hole formation from the gravitational collapse of primordial density fluctuations. In particular, we find that primordial black holes are produced in the $0.1-10~M_{\odot}$ mass range with a favorable choice of parameters in th…
In this talk I discuss models in which a homogeneous scalar field is used to modify standard cosmology above the nucleosynthesis scale to provide an explanation for the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry of the Universe.
We investigate the phenomenological consequences of axion-like particle (ALP) dark matter with an early matter domination triggered by primordial black holes (PBHs). We focus on light BHs with masses smaller than $\sim 10^9~$g which fully evaporate before Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We numerically solve the coupled Boltzmann equations, carefully taking the greybody factors and BH angular momentum into account. We find that the entropy injection from PBH evaporation dilutes the ALP relic abundance originally produced via the vacuum misalignment mechanism, opening the parameter space with larger s…
Gravitational waves (GWs) are produced by colliding particles through the gravitational analogue of electromagnetic bremsstrahlung. We calculate the contribution of free-free emission in the radiation-dominated Universe to the stochastic GW background. We find that the energy density of the resulting GW radiation is heavily dependent on the number of elementary particles, $N_{\mathrm{tot}}$, and the maximum initial temperature, $T_{\mathrm{max}}$. We rule out $N_{\mathrm{tot}}\gtrsim N_{\mathrm{SM}}$ for $T_{\mathrm{max}}\sim T_{\mathrm{Planck}}\approx10^{19}$ GeV and $N_{\mathrm{tot}}\gtrsim1…
We present EvoEMD, a framework to calculate the evolution of cosmic relics in a Universe with an early matter-dominated (EMD) era. There are mainly two aspects to consider in this regard. First, an EMD era changes the Hubble expansion rate with respect to the standard radiation-dominated (RD) universe. Second, when the EMD era ends, the out-of-equilibrium decay of the dominant matter component may reheat the thermal bath and dilute cosmic relics. We briefly introduce the cosmology with an EMD era, and present how it is implemented in the EvoEMD framework. Users can study the coupled evolution …
We consider leptogenesis in a left-right-symmetric seesaw scenario in which neutrino mass generation and leptogenesis are dominated by the type-II seesaw term. Motivated by grand unification, we assume that the neutrino Dirac mass matrix is dominated by a single entry of the order of the top-quark mass, which leaves the low-energy phases of the lepton mixing matrix as the only sources of CP violation. Working in a regime where the triplet scalar predominantly decays into leptons, this results in a predictive scenario based on a minimal number of parameters. We perform a detailed analysis of th…
The luminosity distance-redshift relation is one of the fundamental tools of modern cosmology. We compute the luminosity distance-redshift relation in a perturbed flat matter-dominated Universe, taking into account the presence of cosmological inhomogeneities up to second order in perturbation theory. Cosmological observations implementing the luminosity distance-redshift relation tell us that the Universe is presently undergoing a phase of accelerated expansion. This seems to call for a mysterious Dark Energy component with negative pressure. Our findings suggest that the need of a Dark Energ…
One signature of an expanding universe is the time-variation of the cosmological abundances of its different components. For example, a radiation-dominated universe inevitably gives way to a matter-dominated universe, and critical moments such as matter-radiation equality are fleeting. In this paper, we point out that this lore is not always correct, and that it is possible to obtain a form of "stasis" in which the relative cosmological abundances $Ω_i$ of the different components remain unchanged over extended cosmological epochs, even as the universe expands. Moreover, we demonstrate that su…
Non-perturbative electroweak effects, in thermal equilibrium in the early universe, have the potential to erase the baryon asymmetry of the universe, unless it is encoded in a B-L asymmetry, or in some "accidentally" conserved quantity. We first consider the possibility that the BAU may be regenerated from lepton flavour asymmetries even when initially $B-L = 0$. We show that provided some, but {\it not} all the lepton flavours are violated by $ΔL{\neq}0$ interactions in equilibrium, the BAU may be regenerated without lepton mass effects. We next examine the possibility of encoding the baryon …
We study possibilities to explain the whole dark matter abundance by primordial black holes (PBHs) or to explain the merger rate of binary black holes estimated from the gravitational wave detections by LIGO/Virgo. We assume that the PBHs are originated in a radiation- or matter-dominated era from large primordial curvature perturbation generated by inflation. We take a simple model-independent approach considering inflation with large running spectral indices which are parametrized by $n_\text{s}, α_\text{s}$, and $β_\text{s}$ consistent with the observational bounds. The merger rate is fitte…
Angular momentum plays very important roles in the formation of PBHs in the matter-dominated phase if it lasts sufficiently long. In fact, most collapsing masses are bounced back due to centrifugal force, since angular momentum significantly grows before collapse. As a consequence, most of the formed PBHs are rapidly rotating near the extreme value $a_{*}=1$, where $a_{*}$ is the nondimensional Kerr parameter at their formation. The smaller the density fluctuation $σ_{H}$ at horizon entry is, the stronger the tendency towards the extreme rotation. Combining the effect of angular momentum with …
