String/ M-theory compactifications predict the existence of a modulus field with a mass of 100-10000 TeV. Its decay at MeV-temperatures generates large amounts of entropy and washes out any previously produced baryon asymmetry. We describe how the baryon asymmetry can be (re)generated by the modulus decay. The mechanism relates the smallness of the asymmetry to the hierarchy between the Planck- and the Fermi-scale.
We show a new mechanism for baryogenesis where the reheating temperature can be smaller than the electroweak scale. The baryon number symmetry is violated by a dimension nine operator which conserves a baryon parity. A high energy quark from the decay of a heavy particle, $e.g.$ inflaton, modulus or gravitino, undergoes flavor oscillation, and is thermalized due to the scatterings with the ambient thermal plasma. We point out that the baryon asymmetry of our universe can be generated due to the scatterings via the baryon number violating operator. Our scenario can be tested in neutron-antineut…
The spectrum of energy density fluctuations, baryon asymmetry, and coherent large-scale magnetic fields are the three observables that provide crucial information on physics at very high energies. Inflation can only provide a mechanism to explain the density perturbations, and the origin of primordial magnetic fields and baryon asymmetry require physics beyond the standard models of cosmology and particle physics. In this work, we show that the mechanism that leads to primordial helical fields also leads to baryogenesis at the beginning of the radiation-dominated epoch. The model we consider h…
We consider a model in which baryogenesis occurs at low scale, at a temperature below the electroweak phase transition. This model involves new diquark-type scalars which carry baryon number. Baryon number violation is introduced in the scalar potential, permitting $ΔB=2$ violating process involving Standard Model quarks while avoiding stringent proton decay constraints. Depending on their quantum number assignment, the diquark-type scalars can couple to either right or left handed quarks, or to both. We show that this model can provide a viable explanation of the baryon asymmetry of the unive…
We examine the extent to which primordial black holes (PBHs) can constitute the observed dark matter while also giving rise to the measured matter-antimatter asymmetry and account for the observed baryon abundance through asymmetric Hawking radiation generated by a derivative coupling of curvature to the baryon-lepton current. We consider both broad and monochromatic mass spectra for this purpose. For the monochromatic spectrum we find that the correct dark matter and baryon energy densities are recovered for peak masses of the spectrum of $M_{\rm pk} \geq 10^{12}$ kg whereas for the broad cas…
We present a novel Affleck-Dine scenario for the generation of the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe based on the non-trivial interplay between quintessential inflationary models containing a kinetic dominated post-inflationary era and a non-minimally coupled $U(1)$ field with a weakly broken $B-L$ symmetry. The non-minimal coupling to gravity renders heavy the Affleck-Dine field during inflation and avoids the generation of isocurvature fluctuations. During the subsequent kinetic era the Ricci scalar changes sign and the effective mass term of the Affleck-Dine field becomes tachyonic.…
In this paper, we consider the possibilities of generating baryon number asymmetry in thermal equilibrium within the frameworks of teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel gravities. Through the derivative couplings of the torsion scalar or the non-metricity scalar to baryons, the baryon number asymmetry is indeed produced in the radiation dominated epoch. For gravitational baryogenesis mechanisms in these two frameworks, the produced baryon-to-entropy ratio is too small to be consistent with observations. But the gravitational leptogenesis models within both frameworks have the possibilities t…
The Standard Model (SM) possesses an instability at high scales that would be catastrophic during or just after inflation, and yet no new physics has been seen to alter this. Furthermore, modern developments in quantum gravity suggest that the SM degrees of freedom are not unique; that a typical low energy effective theory should include a large assortment of hidden sector degrees of freedom. It is therefore puzzling that cosmological constraints from BBN and CMB reveal that the early universe was almost entirely dominated by the SM, when the inflaton $ϕ$ could have decayed into many sectors. …
It is widely believed that string theory easily allows for a QCD axion in the cosmologically favoured mass range. The required small decay constant, $f_a\ll M_P$, can be implemented by using a large compactification volume. This points to the Large Volume Scenario which in turn makes certain cosmological predictions: First, the closed string axion behaves similarly to a field-theoretic axion in the pre-inflationary scenario, i.e. the initial value can be tuned but one is constrained by isocurvature fluctuations. In addition, the volume represents a long-lived modulus that may lead to an early …
In this work, we make the first study of electroweak baryogenesis (EWBG) based on the LHC data in the CP-violating next-to-minimal supersymmetric model (NMSSM) where a strongly first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT) is obtained in the general complex Higgs potential. With representative benchmark points which pass the current LEP and LHC constraints, we demonstrate the structure of EWPT for those points and how a strongly first order EWPT is obtained in the complex NMSSM where the resulting gravitational wave production properties are found to be within the reaches of future space-bas…
