A key result in four dimensional black hole physics, since the early 1970s, is Hawking's topology theorem asserting that the cross-sections of an "apparent horizon", separating the black hole region from the rest of the spacetime, are topologically two-spheres. Later, during the 1990s, by applying a variant of Hawking's argument, Gibbons and Woolgar could also show the existence of a genus dependent lower bound for the entropy of topological black holes with negative cosmological constant. Recently Hawking's black hole topology theorem, along with the results of Gibbons and Woolgar, has been generalised to the case of black holes in higher dimensions. Our aim here is to give a simple self-contained proof of these generalisations which also makes their range of applicability transparent.
Hawking's theorem on the topology of black holes asserts that cross sections of the event horizon in 4-dimensional asymptotically flat stationary black hole spacetimes obeying the dominant energy condition are topologically 2-spheres. This conclusion extends to outer apparent horizons in spacetimes that are not necessarily stationary. In this paper we obtain a natural generalization of Hawking's results to higher dimensions by showing that cross sections of the event horizon (in the stationary case) and outer apparent horizons (in the general case) are of positive Yamabe type, i.e., admit metr…
In this work we determine how the description of a four-dimensional Schwarzschild-anti de Sitter black hole affects the topological calculation of its Hawking temperature. It is shown that a two-dimensional approach is required due to the presence of the Hawking-Page phase transition which destabilises the spacetime's topology. We prove that a dimensional reduction removes the phase transition and hence stabilises the system. This hints at a previously unknown feature of black hole thermodynamics, namely that certain black holes may demand a lower-dimensional description in order to define the…
Using the Bragg-Williams construction of an off-shell free energy we compute the topological charge of the Hawking-Page transition point for black holes in AdS. A computation following from a related off-shell effective potential in the boundary gauge dual matches the value of topological charge obtained in the bulk. We also compute the topological charges of the equilibrium phases of these systems, which follow from the saddle points of the appropriate free energy. The locally stable and unstable phases turn out to have topological charges opposite to each other, with the total being zero, in…
We argue that, when working with the appropriate set of thermodynamical variables, the Bekenstein-Hawking law still holds for asymptotically flat black objects with conical singularities. The mass-energy which enters the first law of thermodynamics does not, however, coincide with the ADM mass; it differs from the latter by the energy associated with the conical singularity, as seen by an asymptotic, static observer. These statements are supported by a number of examples: the Bach-Weyl (double-Schwarzschild) solution, its dihole generalisation in Einstein-Maxwell theory and the five dimensiona…
The constant curvature (CC) black holes are higher dimensional generalizations of BTZ black holes. It is known that these black holes have the unusual topology of ${\cal M}_{D-1}\times S^1$, where $D$ is the spacetime dimension and ${\cal M}_{D-1}$ stands for a conformal Minkowski spacetime in $D-1$ dimensions. The unusual topology and time-dependence for the exterior of these black holes cause some difficulties to derive their thermodynamic quantities. In this work, by using globally embedding approach, we obtain the Hawking temperature of the CC black holes. We find that the Hawking temperat…
The Unruh and Hawking effects are investigated on certain families of topologically non-trivial spacetimes using a variety of techniques. First we present the Bogolubov transformation between Rindler and Minkowski quantizations on two flat spacetimes with topology ${\R}^3\times{S^1}$ (M_0 and M_-) for massive Dirac spinors. The two inequivalent spin structures on each are considered. Results show modifications to the Minkowski space Unruh effect. This provides a flat space model for the Hawking effect on Kruskal and RP^3 geon black hole spacetimes which is the subject of the rest of this part.…
We extend both the Hawking-Penrose Theorem and its generalisation due to Galloway and Senovilla to Lorentzian metrics of regularity $C^1$. For metrics of such low regularity, two main obstacles have to be addressed. On the one hand, the Ricci tensor now is distributional, and on the other hand, unique solvability of the geodesic equation is lost. To deal with the first issue in a consistent way, we develop a theory of tensor distributions of finite order, which also provides a framework for the recent proofs of the theorems of Hawking and of Penrose for $C^1$-metrics [7]. For the second issue,…
The quantum cosmological version of the multidimensional Einstein-Yang-Mills model in a $R \times S^3 \times S^d$ topology is studied in the framework of the Hartle-Hawking proposal. In contrast to previous work in the literature, we consider Yang-Mills field configurations with non-vanishing time-dependent components in both $S^3$ and $S^d$ spaces. We obtain stable compactifying solutions that do correspond to extrema of the Hartle-Hawking wave function of the Universe. Subsequently, we also show that the regions where 4-dimensional metric behaves classically or quantum mechanically (i.e. reg…
Recently a simple proof of the generalizations of Hawking's black hole topology theorem and its application to topological black holes for higher dimensional ($n\geq 4$) spacetimes was given \cite{rnew}. By applying the associated new line of argument it is proven here that strictly stable untrapped surfaces do possess exactly the same topological properties as strictly stable marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTSs) are known to have. In addition, a quasi-local notion of outwards and inwards pointing spacelike directions--applicable to untrapped and marginally trapped surfaces--is also intro…
The quantum corrections make the black hole capable of reflection: any particle that approaches the event horizon can bounce back in the outside world. The albedo of the black hole depends on its temperature. The reflection shares physical origins with the phenomenon of Hawking radiation; both effects are explained as consequences of the singular nature that the event horizon exhibits on the quantum level.
We consider the capacity of entanglement in models related with the gravitational phase transitions. The capacity is labeled by the replica parameter which plays a similar role to the inverse temperature in thermodynamics. In the end of the world brane model of a radiating black hole the capacity has a peak around the Page time indicating the phase transition between replica wormhole geometries of different types of topology. Similarly, in a moving mirror model describing Hawking radiation the capacity typically shows a discontinuity when the dominant saddle switches between two phases, which …
Sign and magnitude of Ruppeiner's curvature $R_N$ is an empirical indicator of the respective nature and strength of microstructures of a thermodynamic system. For d-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes in AdS, $R_N$ at the Hawking-Page (HP) transition point is a universal constant. In this article we study the nature of $R_N$ at HP transition in a massive gravity theory and show that its constancy is broken due to the dependence on graviton mass as well as horizon topology. Although, when the graviton mass reaches a critical value the HP transition is driven to zero temperature, and $R_N$ at…
In general relativity without a cosmological constant, a classical theorem due to Hawking states that stationary black holes must be topologically spherical. This result is one of the several ingredients that collectively imply the uniqueness of the Kerr metric. If, however, general relativity describes gravity inexactly at high energies or over cosmological scales, Hawking's result may not apply, and black holes with non-trivial topology may be, at least mathematically, permissible. While tests involving electromagnetic and gravitational-wave data have been used to place tight constraints on …
The Gannon-Lee singularity theorems give well-known restrictions on the spatial topology of singularity-free (i.e., nonspacelike geodesically complete), globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this paper, we revisit these classic results in the light of recent developments, especially the failure in higher dimensions of a celebrated theorem by Hawking on the topology of black hole horizons. The global hyperbolicity requirement is weakened, and we expand the scope of the main results to allow for the richer variety of spatial topologies which are likely to occur in higher-dimensional spacetimes.

It is commonly known in the literature that large black holes in anti-de Sitter spacetimes (with reflective boundary condition) are in thermal equilibrium with their Hawking radiation. Focusing on black holes with event horizon of toroidal topology, we study a simple model to understand explicitly how this thermal equilibrium is reached under Hawking evaporation. It is shown that it is possible for a large toroidal black hole to evolve into a small (but stable) one.
In a recent paper (gr-qc/0509107) the author and Rick Schoen obtained a generalization to higher dimensions of a classical result of Hawking concerning the topology of black holes. It was proved that, apart from certain exceptional circumstances, cross sections of the event horizon, in the stationary case, and 'weakly outermost' marginally outer trapped surfaces, in the general case, in black hole spacetimes obeying the dominant energy condition, are of positive Yamabe type. This implies many well-known restrictions on the topology, and is consistent with recent examples of five dimensional st…
Through direct thermodynamic calculations we have shown that different classical entropies of two-dimensional extreme black holes appear due to two different treatments, namely Hawking's treatment and Zaslavskii's treatment. Geometrical and topological properties corresponding to these different treatments are investigated. Quantum entropies of the scalar fields on the backgrounds of these black holes concerning different treatments are also exhibited. Different results of entropy and geometry lead us to argue that there are two kinds of extreme black holes in the nature. Explanation of black …

Hawking's topology theorem in general relativity restricts the cross-section of the event horizon of a black hole in $3+1$ dimension to be either spherical or toroidal. The toroidal case is ruled out by the topology censorship theorems. In this article, we discuss the generalization of this result to black holes in $f(R)$ gravity in $3+1$ and higher dimensions. We obtain a sufficient differential condition on the function $f'(R)$, which restricts the topology of the horizon cross-section of a black hole in $f(R)$ gravity in $3+1$ dimension to be either $S^2$ or $S^1 \times S^1$. We also extend…
It is proved that any static system that is spacetime-geodesically complete at infinity, and whose spacelike-topology outside a compact set is that of R^3 minus a ball, is asymptotically flat. The matter is assumed compactly supported and no energy condition is required. A similar (though stronger) result applies to black holes too. This allows us to state a large generalisation of the uniqueness of the Schwarzschild solution not requiring asymptotic flatness. The Korotkin-Nicolai static black-hole shows that, for the given generalisation, no further flexibility in the hypothesis is possible.
Over the past decade there has been an increasing interest in the study of black holes, and related objects, in higher (and lower) dimensions, motivated to a large extent by developments in string theory. The aim of the present paper is to obtain higher dimensional analogues of some well known results for black holes in 3+1 dimensions. More precisely, we obtain extensions to higher dimensions of Hawking's black hole topology theorem for asymptotically flat ($Λ=0$) black hole spacetimes, and Gibbons' and Woolgar's genus dependent, lower entropy bound for topological black holes in asymptoticall…
In four dimensions the topology of the event horizon of an asymptotically flat stationary black hole is uniquely determined to be the two-sphere $S^2$. We consider the topology of event horizons in higher dimensions. First, we reconsider Hawking's theorem and show that the integrated Ricci scalar curvature with respect to the induced metric on the event horizon is positive also in higher dimensions. Using this and Thurston's geometric types classification of three-manifolds, we find that the only possible geometric types of event horizons in five dimensions are $S^3$ and $S^2 \times S^1$. In s…
The near horizon geometry of the rotating C-metric, describing accelerating Kerr-Newman black holes, is analysed. It is shown that, at extremality, even though not it is isomorphic to the extremal Kerr-Newman, it remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2 \times S^2$. Therefore the methods of the Kerr/CFT correspondence can successfully be applied to build a CFT dual model, whose entropy reproduce, through the Cardy formula, the Beckenstein-Hawking entropy of the accelerating black hole. The mass of accelerating Kerr-Newman black hole, which fulfil the first law of thermodynamics, is prese…
Scalar-tensor gravitation theories, such as the Brans-Dicke family of theories, are commonly partly described by a modified Einstein equation in which the Ricci tensor is replaced by the Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor of a Lorentzian metric and scalar field. In physics this formulation is sometimes referred to as the "Jordan frame". Just as, in General Relativity, natural energy conditions on the stress-energy tensor become conditions on the Ricci tensor, in scalar-tensor theories expressed in the Jordan frame natural energy conditions become conditions on the Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor. We show that,…
We remark that the standard black hole topology admits twisted configurations of spinor field due to existence of the twisted spinor bundles and analyse them using the Schwarzschild black hole as an example. This is physically linked with the natural presence of Dirac monopoles on black holes and entails marked modification of the Hawking radiation for spinor particles.
We present a systematic study of the moduli space of asymptotically flat, supersymmetric and biaxisymmetric black hole solutions to five-dimensional minimal supergravity. Previously, it has been shown that such solutions must be multi-centred solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base. In this paper we perform a full analysis of three-centred solutions with a single black hole, for which there are seven regular black hole solutions. We find that four of these can have the same conserved charges as the BMPV black hole. These consist of a black lens with L(3,1) horizon topology and three distinct fam…
The Einstein's equations with a negative cosmological constant admit solutions which are asymptotically anti-de Sitter space. Matter fields in anti-de Sitter space can be in stable equilibrium even if the potential energy is unbounded from below, violating the weak energy condition. Hence there is no fundamental reason that black hole's horizons should have spherical topology. In anti-de Sitter space the Einstein's equations admit black hole solutions where the horizon can be a Riemann surface with genus $g$. The case $g=0$ is the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole first studied by Hawki…
We investigate higher dimensional cosmological models in the semiclassical approximation with Hartle-Hawking Boundary conditions, assuming a gravitational action which is described by the scalar curvature with a cosmological constant. In the framework the probability for quantum creation of an inflationary universe with a pair of black holes in a multidimensional universe is evaluated. The probability for creation of a universe with a spatial section with $S^{1}XS^{D -2}$ topology is then compared with that of a higher dimensional de Sitter universe with $S^{D -1}$ spatial topology. It is foun…
The tools of Kerr/CFT correspondence are applied to the Kerr black hole embedded in an axial external magnetic field. Its extremal near horizon geometry remains a warped and twisted product of $AdS_2\times S^2$. The central charge of the Virasoro algebra, generating the asymptotic symmetries of the near horizon geometry, is found. It is used to reproduce, via the Cardy formula, the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the magnetised Kerr black hole as the statistical microscopic entropy of a dual CFT. The presence of the background magnetic field makes available also a second dual CFT picture, based …
An action principle for spacetimes with the topology of an Euclidean black-hole is given. The gravitational field is described by the ordinary volume degrees of freedom plus additional surface fields at the horizon. The surface degrees of freedom correspond to diffeomorphisms on the sphere at the horizon and a field of ``opening angles''. General covariance forces the surface modes to be confined to a box of an unusual exponential shape, whose volume must be specified as part of the definition of the statistical ensemble. This gives rise to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.
We have found that for extreme dilaton black holes an inner boundary must be introduced in addition to the outer boundary to give an integer value to the Euler number. The resulting manifolds have (if one identifies imaginary time) topology $S^1 \times R \times S^2 $ and Euler number $χ= 0$ in contrast to the non-extreme case with $χ=2$. The entropy of extreme $U(1)$ dilaton black holes is already known to be zero. We include a review of some recent ideas due to Hawking on the Reissner-Nordström case. By regarding all extreme black holes as having an inner boundary, we conclude that the entrop…
We describe twisted configurations of spinor field on the Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström black holes that arise due to existence of the twisted spinor bundles over the standard black hole topology. From a physical point of view the appearance of spinor twisted configurations is linked with the natural presence of Dirac monopoles that play the role of connections in the complex line bundles corresponding to the twisted spinor bundles. Possible application to the Hawking radiation is also outlined.
We compute the renormalized vacuum polarization for a massless, conformally coupled scalar field on asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole backgrounds. Mixed (Robin) boundary conditions are applied on the spacetime boundary. We consider black holes with nonspherical event horizon topology as well as spherical event horizons. The quantum scalar field is in the Hartle-Hawking state, and we employ Euclidean methods to calculate the renormalized expectation values. Far from the black hole, we find that the vacuum polarization approaches a finite limit, which is the same for all boundary conditio…
In this review article we compare the recent work of Peter Lynds, "On a finite universe with no beginning or end", with that of Stephen Hawking, primarily "Quantum Cosmology, M-Theory, and the Anthropic Principle", and two foundational works by Sean M. Carroll and Jennifer Chen, "Does Inflation Provide Natural Conditions for the Universe" and "Spontaneous Inflation and the Origin of the Arrow of Time", in order to evaluate their comparative treatments of the nature and role of causality, time ordering, thermodynamic reversibility, singularities and boundary conditions in the formation of the e…
We examine counterparts of the Reissner-Nordstrom-anti-de Sitter black hole spacetimes in which the two-sphere has been replaced by a surface Sigma of constant negative or zero curvature. When horizons exist, the spacetimes are black holes with an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter infinity, but the infinity topology differs from that in the asymptotically Minkowski case, and the horizon topology is not S^2. Maximal analytic extensions of the solutions are given. The local Hawking temperature is found. When Sigma is closed, we derive the first law of thermodynamics using a Brown-York type q…
We study microstates of the three dimensional black hole obtained by quantizing topologically non-trivial geometries behind the event horizon. In chiral gravity these states are found by quantizing the moduli space of bordered Riemann surfaces. In the semi-classical limit these microstates can be counted using intersection theory on the moduli space of punctured Riemann surfaces. We make a conjecture (supported by numerics) for the asymptotic behaviour of the relevant intersection numbers. The result is that the geometric microstates with fixed topology have an entropy which grows too slowly t…
This is the second article of a series or two, proving a generalisation of the uniqueness theorem of the Schwarzschild solution. The theorem to be shown classifies all (metrically complete) solutions of the static vacuum Einstein equations with compact but non-necessarily connected horizon without any further assumption on the topology or the asymptotic. Specifically, it is shown that any such solution is either: (i) a Boost, (ii) a Schwarzschild black hole, or (iii) is of Myers/Korotkin-Nicolai type, that is, it has the same topology and Kasner asymptotic as the Myers/Korotkin-Nicolai black h…
In this work, we define a quantum gravity state on a nice slice. The nice slices provide a foliation of spacetime and avoid regions of strong curvature. We explore the topology and the geometry of the manifold obtained from a nice slice after evolving it in complex time. We compute its associated semiclassical thermodynamics entropy for a 4d Schwarzschild black hole. Despite the state one can define on a nice slice is not a global pure state, remarkably, we get a similar result to Hawking's calculation. In the end, we discuss the entanglement entropy of two segments on a nice slice and comment…
Recently Herzog has shown that deconfinement of AdS/QCD can be realized, in the hard-wall model where the small radius region is removed in the asymptotically AdS space, via a first order Hawking-Page phase transition between a low temperature phase given by a pure AdS geometry and a high temperature phase given by the AdS black hole in Poincare coordinates. In this paper we first extend Herzog's work to the hard wall AdS/QCD model in curved spaces by studying the thermodynamics of AdS black holes with spherical or negative constant curvature horizon, dual to a non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills th…
The bosonic content of string theory in curved background of multidimensional structure with p-branes has a systematic geometrical description as an effective sigma-model of gravity in lower dimension (say 3+1) with additional interacting dilatonic and p-brane fields. If the target-space is locally symmetric, solutions with intersecting p-branes can be found. Some static solutions are p-brane generalizations of black holes (including the standard Reissner-Nordstr"om class), which allow the prediction of detectable features of the higher-dimensional p-brane geometry via scaling properties of bl…
