We consider a statistical ensemble of particles of mass m, which can be described by a probability density ρand a probability current \vec{j} of the form ρ\nabla S/m. The continuity equation for ρand \vec{j} implies a first differential equation for the basic variables ρand S. We further assume that this system may be described by a linear differential equation for a complex state variable χ. Using this assumptions and the simplest possible Ansatz χ(ρ,S) Schroedingers equation for a particle of mass m in an external potential V(q,t) is deduced. All calculations are performed for a single spatial dimension (variable q) Using a second Ansatz χ(ρ,S,q,t) which allows for an explict q,t-dependence of χ, one obtains a generalized Schroedinger equation with an unusual external influence described by a time-dependent Planck constant. All other modifications of Schroeodingers equation obtained within this Ansatz may be eliminated by means of a gauge transformation. Thus, this second Ansatz may be considered as a generalized gauging procedure. Finally, making a third Ansatz, which allows for an non-unique external q,t-dependence of χ, one obtains Schroedingers equation with electromagnetic potentials \vec{A}, ϕin the familiar gauge coupling form. A possible source of the non-uniqueness is pointed out.
Quantum field theory is assumed to be gauge invariant. However it is well known that when certain quantities, such as the vacuum current, are calculated the results are not gauge invariant. The non-gauge invariant terms have to be removed in order to obtain a physically correct result. It has been shown in Ref. [3] and [4] that this problem may be due to a mathematical inconsistency in the canonical formulation of QFT. In this article we will review this previous work and then examine an alternative formulation of QFT called the functional Schroedinger approach. It will be shown that this appr…
It is generally assumed that quantum field theory (QFT) is gauge invariant. However it is well known that non-gauge invariant terms appear in various calculations. This problem was recently examined in [9] for a "simple" field theory and it was shown that for this case QFT in the Schroedinger picture is not, in fact, gauge invariant. In order to shed further light on this problem we will examine the Heisenberg and Schroedinger formulations of QFT. It is generally assumed that these two "pictures" are equivalent; however we will show that this is not necessarily the case. We shall consider a si…
In the present contribution we consider a class of Schroedinger equations containing complex nonlinearities, describing systems with conserved norm $|ψ|^2$ and minimally coupled to an abelian gauge field. We introduce a nonlinear transformation which permits the linearization of the source term in the evolution equations for the gauge field, and transforms the nonlinear Schroedinger equations in another one with real nonlinearities. We show that this transformation can be performed either on the gauge field $A_μ$ or, equivalently, on the matter field $ψ$. Since the transformation does not chan…
We consider a wide class of nonlinear canonical quantum systems described by a one-particle Schroedinger equation containing a complex nonlinearity. We introduce a nonlinear unitary transformation which permits us to linearize the continuity equation. In this way we are able to obtain a new quantum system obeying to a nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a real nonlinearity. As an application of this theory we consider a few already studied Schroedinger equations as that containing the nonlinearity introduced by the exclusion-inclusion principle, the Doebner-Goldin equation and others. PACS nu…
A contradiction arises when applying standard boundary conditions to a simple quantum rotator with a single coordinate. New boundary conditions for the Schroedinger equation are proposed that involve only gauge invariant quantities, and that can be applied beyond the immediate problem. The use of gauge invariant boundary conditions has important consequence for energy flow in or out of a simple rotator.
In this paper we consider a class of coupled nonlinear Schroedinger equations for the fields $ψ_i$ containing complex nonlinearities, that has been obtained by requiring that the norms $|ψ_i|^2$ are conserved densities. For this class of equations we introduce a Cole-Hopf like transformation, whose effect is to reduce the complex nonlinearities into real ones, this way reducing the continuity equations of the system to the standard bilinear form. Some examples are presented to illustrate the applicability of the method. Pacs numbers: 03.50.-z, 03.65.-w, 11.30.Na, 11.40.Dw Keywords: Coupled non…
A new kind of gauge theory is introduced, where the minimal coupling and corresponding covariant derivatives are defined in the space of functions pertaining to the functional Schroedinger picture of a given field theory. While, for simplicity, we study the example of a U(1) symmetry, this kind of gauge theory can accommodate other symmetries as well. We consider the resulting relativistic nonlinear extension of quantum mechanics and show that it incorporates gravity in the (0+1)-dimensional limit, similar to recently studied Schroedinger-Newton equations. Gravity is encoded here into a univer…
Schroedinger's equation with scalar and vector potentials is shown to describe "nothing but" hopping of a quantum particle on a lattice; any spatial variation of the hopping amplitudes acts like an external electric and/or magnetic field. The main point of the argument is the superposition principle for state vectors; Lagrangians, path integrals, or classical Hamiltonians are not (!) required. Analogously, the Hamiltonian of the free electromagnetic field is obtained as a twofold continuum limit of unitary hopping in Z(N) link configuration space, if gauge invariance and C and P symmetries are…
The idea of equivalence of the free electromagnetic phase and quantum-mechanical one is investigated in an attempt to seek modifications of Schrödinger's equation that could realize it. It is assumed that physically valid realizations are compatibile with the U(1)-gauge and Galilean invariance. It is shown that such extensions of the Schrödinger equation do not exist, which also means that despite their apparent similarity the quantum-mechanical phase is essentially different from the electromagnetic one.
We determine conditions under which a generic gauge invariant nonautonomous and inhomogeneous nonlinear partial differential equation in the two-dimensional space-time continuum can be transform into standard autonomous forms. In addition to the nonlinear Schroedinger equation, important examples include the derivative nonlinear Schroedinger equation, the quintic complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and the Gerdjikov-Ivanov equation. This approach provides a mathematical description of nonstationary media supporting unidimensional signal propagation and/or total field trapping. In particular, we …
In this comment, we point out some shortcomings in two papers "Fractional quantum mechanics" [Phys. Rev. E 62, 3135 (2000)] and "Fractional Schroedinger equation" [Phys. Rev. E 66, 056108 (2002)]. We prove that the fractional uncertainty relation does not hold generally. The probability continuity equation in fractional quantum mechanics has a missing source term, which leads to particle teleportation, i.e., a particle can teleport from one place to another. Since the relativistic kinetic energy can be viewed as an approximate realization of the fractional kinetic energy, the particle teleport…
We give a pedagogical introduction of the stochastic variational method by considering the quantization of a non-inertial particle system. We show that the effects of fictitious forces are represented in the forms of vector fields which behave analogous to the gauge fields in the electromagnetic interaction. We further discuss that the operator expressions for observables can be defined by applying the stochastic Noether theorem.
It is generally assumed that quantum field theory (QFT) is gauge invariant. However it is well known that non-gauge invariant terms appear in various calculations. This problem was examined in Refs. [3] and [4] and it was shown that at the formal level QFT in the Schroedinger picture is not, in fact, gauge invariant. It was determined that this problem was due to a mathematical inconsistency related to the way the vacuum state is defined. In order to shed further light on this problem we consider a simple field theory in 1-1D space-time consisting of a quantized fermion field with zero mass in…
Remarkably we find that for a ring with linear boundary conditions such that the eigenvector and its derivative are continuous, there does not seem to be a way for the well-known de Broglie relation to be gauge invariant. Certain nonlinear boundary conditions assure gauge invariance, and lead to eigenfunctions with a discontinuous but differentiable phase and a continuous spectrum. A discrete subset of this spectrum forms a Hilbert space, while another subset is excluded by the nonlinear boundaries. We conclude that discontinuous momentum eigenfunctions are tenable, and that it is possible tha…
Trajectory-based approaches to quantum mechanics include the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation and Nelson's stochastic interpretation. It is shown that the usual route to establishing the validity of such interpretations, via a decomposition of the Schroedinger equation into a continuity equation and a modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation, fails for some quantum states. A very simple example is provided by a quantum particle in a box, described by a wavefunction initially uniform over the interior of the box. For this example there is no corresponding continuity or modified Hamilton-Jacobi equation,…

In this work is studied a many body system obeying to a generalized Exclusion-Inclusion Principle (EIP) originated by collective effect, the dynamics, in mean field approximation, being ruled by a nonlinear Schroedinger equation. The EIP is introduced by a judicious generalization of the particle current. By means of variational principle is obtained a canonical nonlinear Schroedinger equation. We study the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation. We study the symmetries of the nonlinear Schroedinger equation obeying to EIP and by means of Noether theorem we obtain and discuss conserved quantit…
The combination of interactions and nonadiabaticity in many body systems is shown to induce magnetic gauge potentials in the equation of motion for the one-body reduced density matrix as well as the effective Schroedinger equation for the natural orbitals. The consequences of induced gauge geometry for charge and energy transfer are illustrated in the exact nonlinear dynamics of a three-site Hubbard ring ramped into a Floquet state by a time dependent circulating electric potential. Remarkably, the pumped charge flows against the driving in the strongly interacting regime, and the quasienergy …
A basic aspect of the recently proposed approach to quantum mechanics is that no use of any axiomatic interpretation of the wave function is made. In particular, the quantum potential turns out to be an intrinsic potential energy of the particle, which, similarly to the relativistic rest energy, is never vanishing. This is related to the tunnel effect, a consequence of the fact that the conjugate momentum field is real even in the classically forbidden regions. The quantum stationary Hamilton-Jacobi equation is defined only if the ratio psi^D/psi of two real linearly independent solutions of t…
The relation between manifold topology, observables and gauge group is clarified on the basis of the classification of the representations of the algebra of observables associated to positions and displacements on the manifold. The guiding, physically motivated, principles are i) locality, i.e. the generating role of the algebras localized in small, topological trivial, regions, ii) diffeomorphism covariance, which guarantees the intrinsic character of the analysis, iii) the exclusion of additional local degrees of freedom with respect to the Schroedinger representation. The locally normal rep…
In this paper, operator gauge transformation, first introduced by Kobe, is applied to Maxwell's equations and continuity equation in QED. The gauge invariance is satisfied after quantization of electromagnetic fields. Inherent nonlinearity in Maxwell's equations is obtained as a direct result due to the nonlinearity of the operator gauge transformations. The operator gauge invariant Maxwell's equations and corresponding charge conservation are obtained by defining the generalized derivatives of the first and second kinds. Conservation laws for the real and virtual charges are obtained too. The…
