The existence of a gradient in the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of the quasar 3C 273 jet is confirmed by follow-up observations. A gradient transverse to the jet axis is seen for more than 20 mas in projected distance. Taking account of the viewing angle, we estimate it to be more than 100 pc. Comparing to the distribution of the RM in 1995, we detect a time variation of it at the same distance from the core over 7 yr. We discuss the origin of the Faraday rotation based on this rapid time variation. We rule out foreground media such as a narrow-line region, and suggest a helical magnetic field in the sheath region as the origin of this gradient of the RM.
I discuss recent observations of asymmetries in Doppler shifts across T Tauri jets, and argue that the observed asymmetric velocity shifts and gradients do not indicate jet rotation. These observations, therefor, cannot be used as a support of a magnetized disk wind. The interaction of the jets with a twisted-tilted (wrapped) accretion disk (or the variable velocity precessing model) accounts better for the observations.
We present a sequence of 12 monthly polarimetric 15, 22, and 43 GHz VLBA observations of the radio galaxy 3C 120 revealing a systematic presence of gradients in Faraday rotation and degree of polarization across and along the jet. The degree of polarization increases with distance from the core and toward the jet edges, and has an asymmetric profile in which the northern side of the jet is more highly polarized. The Faraday rotation measure is also stratified across the jet width, with larger values for the southern side. We find a localized region of high Faraday rotation measure superposed o…
Our modelling of FR I radio jets as decelerating, relativistic flows allows us to derive their orientations accurately. We present images of Faraday rotation for two of these these objects (3C 31 and NGC 315) and show that the fluctuations of rotation measure (RM) are larger in the fainter (receding) jets, as expected if the rotation occurs in the hot galaxy/group halos. The gas density is much lower in NGC 315 and the RM fluctuations are only just detectable.
The origin of jets emitted from black holes is not well understood, however there are two possible energy sources, the accretion disk or the rotating black hole. Magnetohydrodynamic simulations show a well-defined jet that extracts energy from a black hole. If plasma near the black hole is threaded by large-scale magnetic flux, it will rotate with respect to asymptotic infinity creating large magnetic stresses. These stresses are released as a relativistic jet at the expense of black hole rotational energy. The physics of the jet initiation in the simulations is described by the theory of blac…
Very long baseline interferometric observations of the radio galaxy 3C 120 show a systematic presence of gradients in Faraday rotation and degree of polarization across and along the jet. These are revealed by the passage of multiple superluminal components throughout the jet as they move out from the core in a sequence of 12 monthly polarimetric observations taken with the VLBA at 15, 22, and 43 GHz. The degree of polarization has an asymmetric profile in which the northern side of the jet is more highly polarized. The Faraday rotation measure is also stratified across the jet width, with lar…
The magnetic flux distribution is determined by the solution of the Grad-Shafranov equation. With differential rotation, i.e. the variation of the iso-rotation parameter, the shape of the light surface must be calculated in an iterative way. For the first time, we have calculated the force-free magnetic structure of truly two-dimensional, relativistic jets, anchored in a differentially rotating disk. Such an approach allows for a direct connection between parameters of the central source (mass, rotation) and the extension of the radio jet. We present an analytical estimate for the jet opening …
Several multi-frequency polarization studies have shown the presence of systematic Faraday Rotation gradients across the parsec-scale jets of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), taken to be due to the systematic variation of the line-of-sight component of a helical magnetic field across the jet. Other studies have confirmed the presence and sense of these gradients in several sources, thus providing evidence that these gradients persist over time and over large distances from the core. However, we find surprising new evidence for a reversal in the direction of the Faraday Rotation gradient across th…
Using the numerical data of MHD simulation for AGN jets based on our ``sweeping magnetic twist model'', we calculated the Faraday rotation measure (FRM) and the Stokes parameters to compare with observations. We propose that the FRM distribution can be used to discuss the 3-dimensional structure of magnetic field around jets, together with the projected magnetic field derived from the Stokes parameters. In the present paper, we supposed the basic straight part of AGN jet, and used the data of axisymmetric simulation. The FRM distribution we derived has a general tendency to have gradient acros…
A model is presented in which the strongest radio-emitting jet outflows are produced in black hole systems when the accretion is a geometrically thick ($H/R \sim 1$) inflow ({\it e.g.}, ADAF, CDAF) {\em and} if the black hole is rotating. For galactic black hole candidates, the model naturally accounts for the observed correlation of jet outflow with the black hole hard emission state and predicts an association of strong jets with rapid black hole rotation. When extended to the supermassive case, the model accounts for the highest radio galaxy and quasar jet powers and provides additional the…
Distributions of Faraday rotation measure (FRM) and the projected magnetic field derived by a 3-dimensional simulation of MHD jets are investigated based on our "sweeping magnetic twist model". FRM and Stokes parameters were calculated to be compared with radio observations of large scale wiggled AGN jets on kpc scales. We propose that the FRM distribution can be used to discuss the 3-dimensional structure of magnetic field around jets and the validity of existing theoretical models, together with the projected magnetic field derived from Stokes parameters. In the previous paper, we investigat…
We have carried out a kinematical, high angular resolution (~ 0".1) study of the jet from DG Tau within 0."5 from the source (or 110 AU along this flow). We analysed line profiles extracted from a set of seven spectra taken with STIS on board the Hubble Space Telescope, with the slits parallel to the jet axis but displaced transversely every 0".07. For the flow of moderate velocity (-70 km/s), we have found systematic differences in the radial velocities of lines emitted on alternate sides of the jet axis. The results are corrected for the effects due to uneven illumination of the slit. The re…
Preliminary VLBA polarisation results on 6 ``blazars'' from 6.5-cm to 7-mm are presented here. Observing at several different wavelengths, separated by short and long intervals, enabled reliable information about the magnetic (B) field structure to be obtained and for the effect of Faraday Rotation to be determined and corrected. For all sources the magnitude of the core Rotation Measure (RM) derived from the shorter wavelength data was greater than that derived from the longer wavelength data, consistent with a higher electron density and/or B-field strength closer to the central engine. A tr…
Results from a survey of the parsec scale Faraday rotation measure properties for 40 quasars, radio galaxies and BL Lac objects are presented. Core rotation measures for quasars vary from approximately 500 to several thousand radians per meter squared. Quasar jets have rotation measures which are typically 500 radians per meter squared or less. The cores and jets of the BL Lac objects have rotation measures similar to those found in quasar jets. The jets of radio galaxies exhibit a range of rotation measures from a few hundred radians per meter squared to almost 10,000 radians per meter square…
We present survey results which suggest rotation signatures at the base of T-Tauri jets. Observations were conducted with the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph at optical and near ultraviolet wavelengths (NUV). Results are presented for the approaching jet from DG Tau, CW Tau, HH 30 and the bipolar jet from TH 28. Systematic asymmetries in Doppler shift were detected across the jet, within 100 AU from the star. At optical wavelengths, radial velocity differences were typically 10 to 25 (+/-5) km/s, while differences in the NUV range were consistently lower at typically 10 (+/-5) km/s…
We report findings from the first set of data in a current survey to establish conclusively whether jets from young stars rotate. We observed the bi-polar jets from the T Tauri stars TH28 and RW Aur, and the blue-shifted jet from T Tauri star LkH$α$321, using the Hubble Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (HST/STIS). Forbidden emission lines (FELs) show distinct and systematic velocity asymmetries of 10 -- 25 (+/- 5) km/s at a distance of 0".3 from the source, representing a (projected) distance of ~ 40 AU along the jet in the case of RW Aur, ~ 50 AU for TH28, and 165 AU in the case of LkH$α$…
Parsec-scale Faraday rotation measure (RM) maps are presented for the radio galaxies M87, 3C 111, and 3C 120. These Very Long Baseline Array observations were made at 8, 12, and 15 GHz. M87 has an extreme RM distribution that varies from -4000 radians m^-2 to more than 9000 radians m^-2 across a projected distance of 0.3 pc in its jet. M87 has no polarized flux closer than 17 mas from the core. 3C 111 and 3C 120 both show polarized emission in their cores that is consistent with the expectations of unified schemes for these broad-line radio galaxies. 3C 111 has an RM gradient that increases fr…
Stellar jets are normally constituted by chains of knots with some periodicity in their spatial distribution, corresponding to a variability of order of several years in the ejection from the protostar/disk system. A widely accepted theory for the presence of knots is related to the generation of internal working surfaces due to variations in the jet ejection velocity. In this paper we study the effect of variations in the inner disk-wind radius on the jet ejection velocity. We show that a small variation in the inner disk-wind radius produce a variation in the jet velocity large enough to gen…
Both in the Faraday Rotation Measure and the intrinsic polarization angle, new features are revealed to indicate a helical magnetic field operating along the jet of the bright active galactic nuclei 3C 273. The helical field has been suggested to be related to the formation and collimation of jets by magnetohydrodynamic models. The distribution of the RM shows a systematic gradient with respect to the jet axis, which is expected by a helical magnetic field. In addition, the helical field can consistently explain two types in the direction of the projected magnetic field: parallel and perpendic…
Using high frequency (12-22 GHz) VLBA observations we confirm the existence of a Faraday rotation measure gradient of ~ 500 rad/m^2/mas transverse to the jet axis in the quasar 3C 273. The gradient is seen in two epochs spaced roughly six months apart. This stable transverse rotation measure gradient is expected if a helical magnetic field wraps around the jet. The overall order to the magnetic field in the inner projected 40 parsecs is consistent with a helical field. However, we find an unexpected increase in fractional polarization along the edges of the source, contrary to expectations. Th…
Relatively few Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) polarization observations have been carried out at 18 cm. The importance of such observations lies in their ability to reveal information about the jet magnetic ({\bf B}) field structure and the environment of the jet on scales intermediate between those probed by higher-frequency VLBI and connected-element interferometers such as the Very Large Array. We have obtained polarization observations of 34 BL Lac objects with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), at 4 separate wavelengths in the 18-20 cm band. The 18-cm jets typically extend to …
We present high angular resolution millimeter wavelength continuum and 13CO(2-1) observations of the circumstellar disk surrounding the TTauri star DG Tauri. We show that the velocity pattern in the inner regions of the disk is consistent with Keplerian rotation about a central 0.67 Msun star. The disk rotation is also consistent with the toroidal velocity pattern in the initial channel of the optical jet, as inferred from HST spectra of the first de-projected 100 AU from the source. Our observations support the tight relationship between disk and jet kinematics postulated by the popular magne…
We are using "broadband" (4.6 to 43 GHz) multi-frequency VLBA polarization observations of compact AGN to investigate the 3-D structure of their jet magnetic (B) fields. Observing at several frequencies, separated by short and long intervals, enables reliable determination of the distribution of Faraday Rotation, and thereby the intrinsic B field structure. Transverse Rotation Measure (RM) gradients were detected in the jets of 0954+658 and 1418+546, providing evidence for the presence of a helical B field surrounding the jet. The RM in the core regions of 2200+420 (BL Lac), 0954+658 and 1418+…
The first laboratory astrophysics experiments to produce a radiatively cooled plasma jet with dynamically significant angular momentum are discussed. A new configuration of wire array z-pinch, the twisted conical wire array, is used to produce convergent plasma flows each rotating about the central axis. Collision of the flows produces a standing shock and jet that each have supersonic azimuthal velocities. By varying the twist angle of the array, the rotation velocity of the system can be controlled, with jet rotation velocities reaching ~20% of the propagation velocity.
Using STIS on board the HST we have obtained a spectroscopic map of the bipolar jet from RW Aur. We find signatures of rotation within the first 300 AU of the jet (1.''5 from RW Aur). Both lobes rotate in the same direction (i.e. with different helicities). Toroidal velocities are in the range 5 - 30 km/s at 20 (30) AU from the symmetry axis in the blueshifted (redshifted) lobe, in line with other STIS observations and with theoretical simulations. The sense of rotation is anti-clockwise looking from the tip of the blue lobe down to the star. Rotation is more evident in the [OI] and [NII] line…
Motivated by the first detections of rotation signatures in the DG Tau jet (Bacciotti et al. 2002), we examine possible biases affecting the relation between detected rotation signatures and true azimuthal velocity for self-similar MHD disc winds, taking into account projection, convolution as well as excitation gradients effects. We find that computed velocity shifts are systematically smaller than the true underlying rotation curve. When outer slower streamlines dominate the emission, we predict observed shifts increasing with transverse distance to the jet axis, opposite to the true rotatio…
Using the Yguazu-a three-dimensional hydrodynamic code, we have computed a set of numerical simulations of heavy, supersonic, radiatively cooling jets including variabilities in both the ejection direction (precession) and the jet velocity (intermittence). In order to investigate the effects of jet rotation on the shape of the line profiles, we also introduce an initial toroidal rotation velocity profile, in agreement with some recent observational evidence found in jets from T Tauri stars which seems to support the presence of a rotation velocity pattern inside the jet beam, near the jet prod…
We review some of the reasons for believing that the generic core-collapse supernova is neutrino-driven, not MHD-jet driven. We include a discussion of the possible role of rotation in supernova blast energetics and morphology, and speculate on the origin of Cas A's and SN1987A's ejecta fields. Two "explosive" phenomena may be associated with most core collapses, the neutrino-driven supernova itself and an underenergetic jet-like ejection that follows. The latter may be a magnetic wind that easily penetrates the debris created by the much more energetic supernova. We predict that many core-col…
Multi-frequency (4.6, 5, 5.5, 8, 8.8, 13, 15, 22 & 43 GHz) polarization observations of 6 "blazars" were obtained on the American Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) over a 24-hr period on 2 July 2006. Observing at several frequencies, separated by short and long intervals, enabled reliable determination of the distribution of Faraday Rotation on a range of scales. In all cases the magnitude of the RM increases in the higher frequency observations, implying that the electron density and/or magnetic field strength is increasing as we get closer to the central engine. After correcting for Faraday ro…
Evidence has been mounting that many of the transverse jet B fields observed in BL Lac objects on parsec scales represent the dominant vvroidal compoent of the intrinsic jet B fields. Such fields could come about, for example, as a result of the "winding up" of an initial "seed" field with a significant longitudinal component by the rotation of the central accreting object. If this is the case, this should give rise to gradients in the rotation measure (RM) across the jets, due to the systematic change in the line-of-sight component of the jet B field. We present evidence for transverse RM gra…
The triple radio source detected in association with the luminous infrared source IRAS 16547-4247 has previously been studied with high angular resolution and high sensitivity with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 3.6-cm wavelength. In this paper, we present new 3.6 cm observations taken 2.68 years after the first epoch that allow a search for variability and proper motions, as well as the detection of additional faint sources in the region. We do not detect proper motions along the axis of the outflow in the outer lobes of this source at a 4-$σ$ upper limit of $\sim$160 km s$^{-1}$. This suggest…
Previously, a multi-wavelength (2cm, 4cm and 6cm) polarization study by Gabuzda, Murray and Cronin (2004) showed systematic Faraday Rotation gradients across the parsec-scale jets of several BL Lac objects, interpreted as evidence for helical magnetic (B) fields - the gradients were taken to be due to the systematic variation of the line-of-sight B field across the jet. We present here new results for the parsec-scale Faraday Rotation distributions for eight additional BL Lac objects, based on polarization data obtained with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at two wavelengths near each of t…
If the transverse jet B fields observed in BL Lac objects on parsec scales represent the toroidal component of the jet B fields, this should give rise to rotation-measure gradients across the jets, due to the systematic change in the line-of-sight component of the jet B field. We have found evidence for such rotation-measure gradients in one-third to one-half of the 1 Jy BL Lac objects we have analyzed. We present and discuss these new results, together with some of their implications for our understanding of the parsec-scale jets of AGN.
We present here the first 2D rotating, multi-group, radiation magnetohydrodynamics (RMHD) simulations of supernova core collapse, bounce, and explosion. In the context of rapid rotation, we focus on the dynamical effects of magnetic stresses and the creation and propagation of MHD jets. We find that a quasi-steady state can be quickly established after bounce, during which a well-collimated MHD jet is maintained by continuous pumping of power from the differentially rotating core. If the initial spin period of the progenitor core is $\sles$ 2 seconds, the free energy reservoir in the secularly…
(Abriged) We present a comprehensive set of axisymmetric, time-dependent simulations of jets from Keplerian disks whose mass loading as a function of disk radius is systematically changed. For a reasonable model for the density structure and injection speed of the underlying accretion disk, mass loading is determined by the radial structure of the disk's magnetic field structure. We vary this structure by using four different magnetic field configurations, ranging from the "potential" configuration (Ouyed&Pudritz 1997), to the increasingly more steeply falling Blandford&Payne (1982) and Pellet…
A torus of reduced differential rotation can form in the inner $\siml 10$pc core of active galactic nuclei incurring a density enhancement that can account for obscuration of X-rays in Seyferts when the initial inner core to black hole mass ratio $\gsim 50$. The same density enhancement and reduction in differential rotation can also lead to dynamo growth of poloidal fields which attain a magnitude $\sim 10^4$G when accreted onto the central engine. As radio jet models often employ poloidal fields as agents in extracting power for the jet luminosity, we suggest that jetted AGN might require th…
We have performed 2.5-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of collapsars including a rotating black hole. This paper is an extension of our previous paper (Mizuno et al. 2004). The current calculation focuses on the effect of black hole rotation using general relativistic MHD with simplified microphysics. Initially, we assume that the core collapse is failed in this star. A few solar mass rotating black hole is inserted by hand into the calculation. We consider two cases, the co-rotating case and counter-rotating case with respect to the black hole rotation. A…
Rotation measure observations of 9 quasars, 4 BL Lacertae objects, and 3 radio galaxies are presented. The rest frame rotation measures in the cores of the quasars and the jets of the radio galaxy M87 are several thousand radians per meter squared. The BL Lacertae objects and the jets of the quasars have rest frame rotation measures of a few hundred radians per meter squared. A nuclear rotation measure of 500 radians per meter squared in the rest frame is suggested as the dividing line between quasar and BL Lacertae objects. The substantial rotation measures of the BL Lacertae objects and quas…
In this pilot study, we examine molecular jets from the embedded Class I sources, HH 26 and HH 72, to search, for the first time, for kinematic signatures of jet rotation from young embedded sources.High resolution long-slit spectroscopy of the H2 1-0 S(1) transition was obtained using VLT/ISAAC, position-velocity (PV) diagrams constructed and intensity-weighted radial velocities transverse to the jet flow measured. Mean intensity-weighted velocities vary between vLSR ~ -90 and -65 km/s for HH 26, and -60 and -10 km/s for HH 72; maxima occur close to the intensity peak and decrease toward the …
We report the discovery of the afterglow of the X-ray rich, long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 011211 and present evidence for oscillatory behaviour in its early optical light curve. The time-scale of the fluctuations, ~1 hour, is much smaller than the time of the observations, ~12 hours from the onset of the gamma-ray burst. The character and strength of the fluctuations are unprecedented and are inconsistent with causally connected variations in the emission of a symmetric, relativistic blast wave, i.e. flux variations which are produced uniformly throughout the shell surface are ruled out. T…
A correlation is presented between the pulse lag and the jet-break time for seven BATSE gamma-ray bursts with known redshifts. This is, to our best knowledge, the first known direct tight correlation between a property of the gamma-ray burst phase (the pulse lag) and the afterglow phase (the jet-break time). As pulse lag and luminosity have been found to be correlated this also represents a correlation between peak luminosity and jet-break time. Observed timescales (variability or spectral lags) as well as peak luminosity naturally have a strong dependence on the Lorentz factor of the outflow …
