Multi-frequency (4.6, 5, 5.5, 8, 8.8, 13, 15, 22 & 43 GHz) polarization observations of 6 "blazars" were obtained on the American Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) over a 24-hr period on 2 July 2006. Observing at several frequencies, separated by short and long intervals, enabled reliable determination of the distribution of Faraday Rotation on a range of scales. In all cases the magnitude of the RM increases in the higher frequency observations, implying that the electron density and/or magnetic field strength is increasing as we get closer to the central engine. After correcting for Faraday rotation, the polarization orientation in the jet is either parallel or perpendicular to the jet direction. A transverse Rotation Measure (RM) gradient was detected in the jet of 0954+658, providing evidence for the presence of a helical magnetic field surrounding the jet. For three of the sources (0954+658, 1418+546, 2200+420), the sign of the RM in the core region changes in different frequency-intervals, indicating that the line-of-sight component of the magnetic field is changing with distance from the base of the jet. We suggest an explanation for this in terms of bends in a relativistic jet surrounded by a helical magnetic field; where there is no clear evidence for pc-scale bends, the same effect can be explained by an accelerating/decelerating jet.
Most of energy carried by relativistic AGN jets remains undetected until hundreds of kiloparsecs where interaction with intergalactic medium produces hot spots. The jet's hidden energy is only partially dissipated at smaller scales, from parsecs to kiloparsecs. Several media may play the role of the ``prime mover'': ions, pairs or large scale magnetic fields. Analyzing VLBI polarization structures of relativistic parsec scale jets we conclude that large-scale magnetic fields can explain the salient polarization properties of parsec-scale AGN jets. This implies that large-scale magnetic fields …
Compact relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei offer an effective tool for investigating the physics of nuclear regions in galaxies. The emission properties, dynamics, and evolution of jets in AGN are closely connected to the characteristics of the central supermassive black hole, accretion disk and broad-line region in active galaxies. Recent results from studies of the nuclear regions in several active galaxies with prominent outflows are reviewed in this contribution.
We present results of simultaneous dual-frequency (2 GHz and 8 GHz) very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 12 active galactic nuclei with prominent jets. Spectral properties of the jets and evolution of their brightness temperature are discussed. Measured sizes and brightness temperatures of VLBI features are found to be consistent with emission from relativistic shocks dominated by adiabatic losses. Physical scenarios with different magnetic field orientation in the jets are discussed.
This paper reviews the topic of sub-parsec - scale jets in quasars, and covers the the following issues: observations of parsec and sub-parsec scale jets; energy dissipation and particle acceleration; radiative processes; magnetic fields, pair content, and energetics; and variability and its relation to the central engine activity. In particular, we describe how internal shocks can explain properties of gamma-ray flares and demonstrate that MeV blazars (those with luminosity peak in the 1-30 MeV range) can be unified with GeV blazars (those with luminosity peak at GeV energies) assuming that i…
(Abridged) We consider the polarization properties of optically thin synchrotron radiation emitted by relativistically moving electron--positron jets carrying large-scale helical magnetic fields. In our model, the jet is cylindrical, and the emitting plasma moves parallel to the jet axis with a characteristic Lorentz factor $Γ$. We draw attention to the strong influence that the bulk relativistic motion of the emitting relativistic particles has on the observed polarization. We conclude that large-scale magnetic fields can explain the salient polarization properties of parsec-scale AGN jets. S…
The upper envelope of the amplitude of the VLBI visibility function usually represents the most compact structural pattern of extragalactic radio sources, in particular, the "core-jet" morphologies. By fitting the envelope to a circular Gaussian model in ~3000 parsec-scale core-jet structures, we find that the apparent angular size shows significant power-law dependence on the observing frequency (power index n = -0.95 pm 0.37). The dependence is likely to result from synchrotron self-absorption in the inhomogeneous jet and not the free-free absorption (n = -2.5), nor the simple scatter broade…
We consider the propagation and stability of the helical electromagnetic perturbations in a relativistic force-free Pointing flux dominated jet (magnetic helix). Perturbations are found to dissipate energy in the vicinity of the resonant surfaces inside the jet, where the resonance of the perturbation with the Alfven waves occurs. The energy of the perturbations is converted into the energy of accelerated particles, which emit synchrotron radiation. The intensity and polarization of this radiation is modulated with the perturbation. Perturbations with vanishing group velocity are the most impo…
We will present a multiepoch study of the three blazars 0954+658 (BL--Lac), PKS1510--089 (HPQ) and 1749+096 (BL--Lac). The first two sources are known to be $γ$--ray loud. Our study is based on milliarcsecond resolution polarimetric observations carried out with the VLBA at 8.4 GHz. The observations took place between January 1999 and May 2001. Superluminal motion is detected along the jet of PKS1510--089 and 1749+096, with $β_{app} \sim 10$ for all features. Magnetic field structure is revealed along the jets of 0954+658 and PKS 1510--089. The polarisation properties of the parsec--scale jets…
The Chandra discovery of bright X-ray emission from kpc-scale jets allows insight into the physical parameters of the jet flow at large scale. At the opposite extreme, extensive studies of the inner relativistic jets in Blazars with multiwavelength observations, yield comparable information on sub-parsec scales. In the framework of simple radiation models for the emission regions we compare the physical parameters of jets on these two very different scales in the only two well studied Blazars for which large-scale emission has been resolved by Chandra. Notably, we find that the relativistic Do…
We present results of VLA and VLBA observations of the 1.420 GHz neutral hydrogen absorption associated with the Compact Symmetric Object 1946+708 (z=0.101). We find significant structure in the gas on parsec scales. The peak column density in the HI (N_HI~2.2x10^23 cm^-2 (T_s/8000K)) occurs toward the center of activity of the source, as does the highest velocity dispersion (FWHM~350 \kms). In addition, we find that the continuum spectra of the various radio components associated with these jets strongly indicate free-free absorption. This effect is particularly pronounced toward the core and…
We report on an ongoing effort to image active galactic nuclei simultaneously observed at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz in the framework of a long-term VLBI project RDV (Research and Development - VLBA) started in 1994 aiming to observe compact extragalactic radio sources in the astrometric/geodetic mode. Observations of bright extragalactic sources are carried out bi-monthly making up to six sessions per year with participation of all ten VLBA antennas and up to nine additional (geodetic and EVN) radio telescopes. Analysis of single-epoch results for 370 quasars, BL Lacs and radio galaxies is presented. We…
Preliminary VLBA polarisation results on 6 ``blazars'' from 6.5-cm to 7-mm are presented here. Observing at several different wavelengths, separated by short and long intervals, enabled reliable information about the magnetic (B) field structure to be obtained and for the effect of Faraday Rotation to be determined and corrected. For all sources the magnitude of the core Rotation Measure (RM) derived from the shorter wavelength data was greater than that derived from the longer wavelength data, consistent with a higher electron density and/or B-field strength closer to the central engine. A tr…
The Very Long Baseline Array has been used at 15 GHz to image the milliarcsecond structure of the Seyfert galaxies Mrk 231 and Mrk 348 at two epochs separated by about 1.7 yr. Both galaxies contain parsec-scale double radio sources whose components have brightness temperatures of 10^9-10^{11} K, implying that they are generated by synchrotron emission. The nuclear components are identified by their strong variability between epochs, indicating that the double sources represent apparently one-sided jets. Relative component speeds are measured to be ~0.1c at separations of 1.1 pc or less (for H_…
What causes the dichotomy between very powerful and very weak radio emission from AGNs? Perhaps the engines are the same but the jets get disrupted by dense ISM in radio-quiet objects, or else the engines are intrinsically different with jet power scaling with, say, black hole spin. To distinguish, one can look for interaction between the jets and the NLR and measure the jet speed close to the core using VLBI, before environmental effects become important. We find that in radio-quiet AGN, the jets appear slower and have a greater tendency to bend, and that one-sidedness and flat-spectrum cores…
X-ray observations of blazars associated with the OVV (Optically Violently Variable) quasars put strong constraints on the electron - positron pair content of radio-loud quasar jets. From those observations, we infer that jets in quasars contain many more electron - positron pairs than protons, but dynamically are still dominated by protons. In particular, we show that pure electron - positron jet models can be excluded, as they overpredict soft X-ray radiation; likewise, pure proton - electron jets can be excluded, as they predict too weak nonthermal X-ray radiation. An intermediate case is v…
We developed theory of particle acceleration inside the relativistic rotating electron-positron force-free jet with spiral magnetic field. We considered perturbation of stationary magnetic field structure and found that acceleration takes place in the regions where the Alfven resonant condition with the eigenmodes in the jet is fulfilled. Acceleration process and synchrotron losses combined together form power law energy spectrum of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons with index between 2 and 3 depending upon initial energy of injected particles. Synchrotron emission of these electrons a…
We present Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the TeV blazars H 1426+428, 1ES 1959+650, and PKS 2155-304 obtained during the years 2001 through 2004. We observed H 1426+428 at four epochs at 8 GHz, and found that its parsec-scale structure consisted of a ~17 mJy core and a single ~3 mJy jet component with an apparent speed of 2.09 +/- 0.53c. The blazar 1ES 1959+650 was observed at three epochs at frequencies of 15 and 22 GHz. Spectral index information from these dual-frequency observations was used to definitively identify the core of the parsec-scale structure. PKS 2155-304 was …
We are investigating the kinematics of jets in active galactic nuclei on parsec scales by studying a representative population of sources. This study is being carried out using the Very Long Baseline Array at 15 GHz, with more than 800 images taken since 1994. In this contribution we present an overview of the diversity of kinematics for a complete sample of sources.
We develop a theory of particle acceleration inside relativistic rotating electron-positron force-free jets with spiral magnetic fields. We considered perturbation of the stationary magnetic field structure and found that acceleration takes place in the regions where the Alfven resonant condition with the eigenmodes in the jet is fulfilled, i.e. where the local Alfven speed is equal to the phase speed of an eigenmode. The acceleration mechanism is regular acceleration by the electric field of the electromagnetic wave, which is the eigenmode of the force-free cylindrical jet: particles drift ou…
The MOJAVE blazar sample consists of the 133 brightest, most compact radio-loud AGN in the northern sky, and is selected on the basis of VLBA 2 cm correlated flux density exceeding 1.5 Jy (2 Jy for declinations south of 0 degrees) at any epoch between 1994 and 2003. Since 1994 we have been gathering VLBA data on the sample to measure superluminal jet speeds and to better understand the parsec-scale kinematics of AGN jets. We have obtained 1.4 GHz VLA-A configuration data on 57 of these sources to investigate whether the extended luminosity of blazars is correlated with parsec-scale jet speed, …
Parsec-scale Faraday rotation measure (RM) maps are presented for the radio galaxies M87, 3C 111, and 3C 120. These Very Long Baseline Array observations were made at 8, 12, and 15 GHz. M87 has an extreme RM distribution that varies from -4000 radians m^-2 to more than 9000 radians m^-2 across a projected distance of 0.3 pc in its jet. M87 has no polarized flux closer than 17 mas from the core. 3C 111 and 3C 120 both show polarized emission in their cores that is consistent with the expectations of unified schemes for these broad-line radio galaxies. 3C 111 has an RM gradient that increases fr…
The apparent position angle difference $Δ$PA between parsec and kilo-parsec jets in blazars can be related to the bending properties of the jets. We present correlations between the misalignment $Δ$PA and the ratio of radio to broad-line emission for a sample of $γ$-ray blazars. The present study is limited to EGRET sources due to uniform data for the radio and optical properties of these sources being easily available. The broad-line emission is known to be a good indicator of the accretion power for both steep and flat-spectrum quasars. We find significant correlations between $Δ$PA and the …
Observations made with the VLBA have led to fundamental advances in our understanding of how radio jets in AGN evolve from parsec-scales out to distances exceeding several hundred kiloparsecs. In this review I discuss current models of young radio source evolution, as well as the observational evidence for a rapid change in jet properties on scales of ~1 kpc. A central topic of current debate is the relative importance of intermittent jet fueling versus jet-environment interactions in causing a drop-off in powerful radio sources at this critical evolutionary stage. Recent 3-D hydrodynamical je…
Relativistic outflows represent one of the best-suited tools to probe the physics of AGN. Numerical modelling of internal structure of the relativistic outflows on parsec scales provides important clues about the conditions and dynamics of the material in the immediate vicinity of the central black holes in AGN. We investigate possible causes of the structural patterns and regularities observed in the parsec-scale jet of the well known quasar 3C 273. We compare the model with the radio structure observed in 3C 273 on parsec scales using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and constrain th…
Relativistic jets carry a significant fraction of the total energy budget of a radio source, rivaling the power that is extracted through accretion. A minor part of this bulk kinetic power is transformed to radiation, possibly through internal shocks if the plasma is accelerated, at the base of the jet, to a velocity which changes in time. In this way we can understand why some radiation is produced all along the jet even if most of it originates at a preferred location, and why the efficiency of conversion of bulk to random energy is small. The recent observations by Chandra of intense jet X-…
We observed the nuclear region of NGC 4261 (3C270) with the VLBA at two frequencies (1.6 and 8.4 GHz) simultaneously. We find that the position angle of the parsec-scale radio axis agrees, within the errors, with the position angle of the VLA-scale jet. Our observations also reveal basically symmetric radio structures at both 1.6 and 8.4 GHz. Analysis of these images shows that most of the central 10 pc of this source is not significantly affected by free-free absorption, even though HST images show that the nucleus contains a nearly edge-on disk of gas and dust on larger scales. Our highest a…
Multi-frequency VLBI observations allow studies of the continuum spectrum in the different parts of the parsec scale jets of AGN, providing information on the physical properties of the plasma and magnetic fields in them. Since VLBI networks cannot be scaled, the range of spatial frequencies observed differs significantly between the different observing frequencies, which makes it difficult to obtain a broadband spectrum of the individual emission features in the jet. In this paper we discuss a model-fitting based spectral extraction method, which can significantly relieve this problem. The me…
We present VLA and first-epoch VLBA observations that are part of a program to study the parsec-scale radio structure of a sample of fifteen high-energy-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs). The sample was chosen to span the range of logarithmic X-ray to radio flux ratios observed in HBLs. As this is only the first epoch of observations, proper motions of jet components are not yet available; thus we consider only the structure and alignment of the parsec- and kiloparsec-scale jets. Like most low-energy-peaked BL Lacs (LBLs), our HBL sample shows parsec-scale, core-jet morphologies and compact, complex kilop…
Results from a survey of the parsec scale Faraday rotation measure properties for 40 quasars, radio galaxies and BL Lac objects are presented. Core rotation measures for quasars vary from approximately 500 to several thousand radians per meter squared. Quasar jets have rotation measures which are typically 500 radians per meter squared or less. The cores and jets of the BL Lac objects have rotation measures similar to those found in quasar jets. The jets of radio galaxies exhibit a range of rotation measures from a few hundred radians per meter squared to almost 10,000 radians per meter square…
We present two Rossi Xray Timing Explorer (RXTE) PCA observations of the type~2 Seyfert galaxy NGC 4388 caught in an unusual low X-ray absorption state. The observations were triggered by a detection in the 1.5-3 keV band of the RXTE All-Sky Monitor. NGC 4388 was found at a somewhat high continuum level (f(2-10 keV)=8x10(-11)erg cm(-2) s(-1)) and with a column density (N_H~3x10(22)cm(-2)), a factor ~10 lower than normal. The second PCA observation, four hours later, gave N_H<2x10(21)cm(-2) indicating, at the 3.1 sigma level, variability so rapid puts the absorber on a few 100 Schwartzschild ra…
The parsec-scale Faraday rotation measure (RM) distribution of six "blazars" is investigated using multi-frequency (4.6--43 GHz) polarization observations taken on 2006 July 2 with the VLBA. Analysis of the RM provides the direction of the line-of-sight (LoS) magnetic field component, as well as the intrinsic 2-D polarization distribution on the plane of the sky. Our results show that the magnitude of the core RM increases systematically with frequency, and is well described by a power-law, where |RM_{core}| \propto ν^a. Our measured values of $a$ vary from 0.9 to 3.8, providing information on…
Evidence that the magnetic fields of extragalactic jets have a significant fraction of their energy in a random component is briefly summarized, and a detailed model of evolving, jet polarization structures is constructed, based on this picture. The evolving magnetic field structure of an oblique shock complex that forms in a relativistic jet simulation is explored by using velocity data from the hydrodynamical simulation to advect an initially random magnetic field distribution. Radiative transfer calculations reveal that emission from a propagating region of magnetic field, `ordered' by the …
We address the issue of ambipolar diffusion in Herbig-Haro jets. The current consensus holds that these jets are launched and collimated via MHD forces. Observations have, however, shown that the jets can be mildly to weakly ionized. Beginning with a simple model for cylindrical equilibrium between neutral, plasma and magnetic pressures we calculate the characteristic time-scale for ambipolar diffusion. Our results show that a significant fraction of HH jets will have ambipolar diffusion time-scales equivalent to, or less than the dynamical time-scales. This implies that MHD equilibria establi…
We calculate the optically thin synchrotron emission of fast electrons and positrons in a spiral stationary magnetic field and a radial electric field of a rotating relativistic strongly magnetized force-free jet consisting of electron-positron pair plasma. The magnetic field has a helical structure with a uniform axial component and a toroidal component that is maximal inside the jet and decreasing to zero towards the boundary of the jet. Doppler boosting and swing of the polarization angle of synchrotron emission due to the relativistic motion of the emitting volume are calculated. The distr…
We present five epochs of 15 GHz VLBA observations of 13 AGN. These observations were specially calibrated to detect parsec scale circular polarization and our calibration techniques are discussed and analyzed in detail. We obtained reliable detections of parsec scale circular polarization in the radio jets of 4 AGN: 3C84, PKS 0528+134, 3C273, and 3C279. For each of these objects our detections are at the level of ~ 0.3-1% local fractional circular polarization. Our observations are consistent across multiple epochs (and different calibration techniques) in the sign and magnitude of the circul…
We report the results of a 15 GHz (2 cm) multi-epoch VLBA program, begun in 1994 to study the outflow in radio jets ejected from quasars and active galaxies. The observed flow of 208 distinct features measured in 110 quasars, active galaxies, and BL Lac objects shows highly collimated relativistic motion with apparent transverse velocities typically between zero and about 15c, with a tail extending up to about 34c. Within individual jets, different features appear to move with a similar characteristic velocity which may represent an underlying continuous jet flow, but we also see some stationa…
We have combined Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data from several programs in order to resolve differences in reported parsec-scale jet speeds for the TeV gamma-ray source Mkn501. Data from the VLBA 2cm survey, and 8 and 15 GHz data from the Radio Reference Frame Image Database, have been combined with data from a 5 GHz VSOP Space VLBI observation to determine the apparent motions of jet components in this source. The combined data set consists of 12 observations between April 1995 and July 1999. Four jet components are detected at most epochs, all of which are clearly sub-luminal (i…
There is growing evidence that relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei undergo extended (parsec-scale) acceleration. We argue that, contrary to some suggestions in the literature, this acceleration cannot be purely hydrodynamic. Using exact semianalytic solutions of the relativistic MHD equations, we demonstrate that the parsec-scale acceleration to relativistic speeds inferred in sources like the radio galaxy NGC 6251 and the quasar 3C 345 can be attributed to magnetic driving. Additional observational implications of this model will be explored in future papers in this series.
(Abridged) We present numerical simulations of the spectral evolution and emission of radio components in relativistic jets. We have developed an algorithm (SPEV) for the transport of a population of non-thermal electrons including radiative losses. For large values of the ratio of gas pressure to magnetic field energy density, \ab \sim 6\times 10^4, quiescent jet models show substantial spectral evolution, with observational consequences only above radio frequencies. Larger values of the magnetic field (\ab \sim 6\times 10^2), such that synchrotron losses are moderately important at radio fre…
Rotation measure observations of 9 quasars, 4 BL Lacertae objects, and 3 radio galaxies are presented. The rest frame rotation measures in the cores of the quasars and the jets of the radio galaxy M87 are several thousand radians per meter squared. The BL Lacertae objects and the jets of the quasars have rest frame rotation measures of a few hundred radians per meter squared. A nuclear rotation measure of 500 radians per meter squared in the rest frame is suggested as the dividing line between quasar and BL Lacertae objects. The substantial rotation measures of the BL Lacertae objects and quas…
Gamma-ray emission from AGN provides us with unprecedented insights into the physics of extragalactic jets. The emission from these jets fits naturally into the existing theoretical framework of relativistic jets as inferred from parsec scale and kiloparsec scale observations. Models of the $γ$-ray fluxes give us important knowledge of jet parameters, in particular magnetic fields and the size of the emitting region. For example, in the case of Markarian~501, the jet plasma is subequipartiion and the energy flux is particle dominated. Discussion of the physics of jets on the sub-parsec scale l…
We present very long baseline interferometry polarization images of an X-ray selected sample of BL Lacertae objects belonging to the first High Energy Astronomy Observatory (HEAO-1) and the ROSAT-Green Bank (RGB) surveys. These are primarily high-energy-peaked BL Lacs (HBLs) and exhibit core-jet radio morphologies on pc-scales. They show moderately polarized jet components, similar to those of low-energy-peaked BL Lacs (LBLs). The fractional polarization in the unresolved cores of the HBLs is, on average, lower than in the LBLs, while the fractional polarizations in the pc-scale jets of HBLs a…
VLT J- to M\p-band adaptive optics observations of the Circinus Galaxy on parsec scales resolve a central bright Ks-band source with a FWHM size of 1.9 $\pm$ 0.6 pc. This source is only visible at wavelengths longward of 1.6 $μ$m and coincides in position with the peak of the [Si VII]~2.48 $μ$m coronal line emission. With respect to the peak of the central optical emission, the source is shifted by $\sim$ 0.15\arcsec (2.8 pc) to the south-east. Indeed, it defines the vertex of a fairly collimated beam which extends for $\sim$ 10 pc, and which is seen in both continuum light shortward of 1.6 $μ…
We study the most central regions of AGN jets with an angular resolution of tens of micro-arcseconds using VLBI at millimeter wavelengths (mm-VLBI). We present and discuss a new 86 GHz VLBI survey of compact radio sources. We show new high dynamic range images of two nearby radio galaxies (3C 120 and M87). In M87 the size of the compact VLBI core (the jet base) is < 15 Schwarzschild radii. Future mm-VLBI observations at 1 mm and shorter wavelengths should lead to images of galactic and extragalactic radio sources with a spatial resolution down to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central super …
We analyzed the zero-order image of a 50 ks Chandra gratings observation of Circinus X-1, taken in 2005 during the source's low-flux state. Circinus X-1 is an accreting neutron star that exhibits ultra-relativistic arcsecond-scale radio jets and diffuse arcminute-scale radio jets and lobes. The image shows a clear excess along the general direction of the north-western counter-jet, coincident with the radio emission, suggesting that it originates either in the jet itself or in the shock the jet is driving into its environment. This makes Circinus X-1 the first neutron star for which an extende…
We compute the effective values of apparent transverse velocity and flux boosting factors for the VLBI radio knots of blazar jets, by integrating over the angular distributions of these quantities across the widths of jets with finite opening angles but constant velocities. For high bulk Lorentz factors (Gamma > 10) variations across the jet can be quite large if the opening angle, omega, is even a few degrees on sub-parsec scales. The resulting apparent speeds are often much lower than those obtained from the usual analyses that ignore the finite jet opening angles. We can thus reconcile the …
Comparing the properties AGN and Herbig-Haro jets can be a useful exercise for understanding the physical mechanisms at work in collimated outflows that propagate in such different environments. In the case of Herbig-Haro jets, the presence of emission lines in the spectra and the continuous evolution of the observation techniques greatly favor our knowledge of the physical parameters of the jets instead, for AGN jets, the process of constraining the jet parameters is hampered by the nature of the emission from these objects that is non-thermal. I will discuss how one cannot directly constrain…
We present the completed results of a high resolution radio imaging survey of all (around 200) low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) in the Palomar spectroscopic Sample of all (around 470) nearby bright northern galaxies. The high incidence of pc-scale radio nuclei, with implied brightness temperatures of the order of 10E7 K, and sub-parsec jets argue for accreting black holes in 50% of all LLAGNs; there is no evidence against all LLAGNs being mini-AGNs.The detected parsec-scale radio nuclei are preferentially found in massive ellipticals and in type 1 nuclei (i.e. nuclei with broad H…
Parsec scale jet properties are shortly presented and discussed. Observational data are used to derive constraints on the jet velocity and orientation, the presence of velocity structures, and the connection between the pc and kpc scale. Two peculiar sources with limb-brightened jets: 1144+35 and Mkn 501 are discussed in detail.
We present images from a long term program (MOJAVE: Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments) to survey the structure and evolution of parsec-scale jet phenomena associated with bright radio-loud active galaxies in the northern sky. The observations consist of 2424 15 GHz VLBA images of a complete flux-density limited sample of 135 AGN above declination -20 degrees, spanning the period 1994 August to 2007 September. These data were acquired as part of the MOJAVE and 2 cm Survey programs, and from the VLBA archive. The sample selection criteria are based on multi-epoch parsec-scale (VLBA…
We argue the behavior of Poynting flux-dominated outflows from AGN in the galactic cluster systems by performing three-dimensional MHD simulations within the framework of the "magnetic tower" model. Of particular interests are the structure of MHD waves, the cylindrical radial force balance, the (de)collimation, and the stability properties of magnetic tower jets. Transition between the jet/lobe and the formation of wiggling jet by growing current-driven instability are discussed.
We discuss a new VLBA program to investigate structural and polarization changes in the brightest AGN jets in the northern sky. Our study represents a significant improvement over previous surveys in terms of image fidelity, size, and completeness, and will serve to characterize the kinematics of AGN jets and determine how these are related to other source properties. We discuss several preliminary results from our program, including the detection of parsec-scale circularly polarized jet emission, enhanced magnetic field ordering at the sites of apparent bends, and intrinsic differences in the…
We present circular polarization results from a 5 GHz survey of the parsec-scale polarization properties of 40 AGN made with the VLBA. We find 11 circular polarization detections at the 3 sigma level or higher. This nearly quadruples the number of sources detected in circular polarization at VLBI resolution. We find no correlation between fractional linear and circular polarization across our sample. A likely explanation is external Faraday depolarization in the cores of AGN which reduces linear polarization but leaves circular polarization unchanged. In comparing ours and other recent results…
We present a hydrodynamical 3D simulation of the relativistic jet in 3C273, in comparison to previous linear perturbation analysis of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability developing in the jet. Our aim is to assess advantages and limitations of both analytical and numerical approaches and to identify spatial and temporal scales on which the linear regime of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability can be applied in studies of morphology and kinematics of parsec-scale jets.
The different methods to derive the jet velocity and orientation on the parsec scale are presented. From these methods I will discuss the velocity distribution of parsec scale jets and the possible presence of acceleration or deceleration in the jet velocity. Moreover, evidences of jet velocity structures will be reported. Finally I will present new data on the superluminal giant radio source 1144+35 to discuss in detail the properties of pc scale jets.
As part of our study of the VLBI properties of TeV blazar jets, we present here a series of high-resolution 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the parsec-scale jets of the TeV blazars 1ES 1959+650, PKS 2155-304, and 1ES 2344+514, with linear resolutions of about 0.5 pc. Each of these sources was observed with the VLBA at three or four epochs during 1999 and 2000. There is a notable lack of any strong moving components on the VLBI images (in contrast to the rapid superluminal motions seen in EGRET blazars), and the structure of the VLBI jet can be modeled either as a series of sta…
Results of high-resolution simultaneous multi-frequency 8.1-15.4 GHz VLBA polarimetric observations of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (the MOJAVE-2 project) are analyzed. We compare characteristics of VLBI features with jet model predictions and test if adiabatic expansion is a dominating mechanism for the evolution of relativistic shocks in parsec-scale AGN jets. We also discuss magnetic field configuration, both predicted by the model and deduced from electric vector position angle measurements.
We present new Very Long Baseline Interferometry observations of the LINER galaxy NGC 4278 with a linear resolution of < 0.1 pc. Our radio data reveal a two sided structure, with symmetric S-shaped jets emerging from a flat spectrum core. By comparing the positions of the components in two epochs, we measure motions corresponding to apparent velocities < 0.2 c, and to ages in the range 8.3 - 65.8 years. From our measurements, we derive that NGC 4278 has mildly relativistic jets (beta aprox 0.75), closely aligned to the line-of-sight (2 deg < theta < 4 deg). We also present a flux density histo…
The parsec-scale total intensity structures of BL Lac objects share many characteristics with quasars: e.g. well-collimated jets and superluminal motion. However, the jets of BL Lac objects appear to fade much more quickly than those in quasars and on VLA scales many BL Lacs have structures comparable to those of low luminosity (FR I) radio galaxies, in which kpc-scale flow speeds are non-relativistic. The region between parsec and kiloparsec scales is therefore one of transition in BL Lac objects. We have carried out VLBI observations of a small sample of BL Lac objects at frequencies between…
