We report on an ongoing effort to image active galactic nuclei simultaneously observed at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz in the framework of a long-term VLBI project RDV (Research and Development - VLBA) started in 1994 aiming to observe compact extragalactic radio sources in the astrometric/geodetic mode. Observations of bright extragalactic sources are carried out bi-monthly making up to six sessions per year with participation of all ten VLBA antennas and up to nine additional (geodetic and EVN) radio telescopes. Analysis of single-epoch results for 370 quasars, BL Lacs and radio galaxies is presented. We discuss VLBI core properties (flux densities, sizes, brightness temperatures), spectral characteristics of the cores and jets, evolution of brightness temperatures in the jets.
This article describes currently used analysis strategy and data analysis software for geodetic VLBI.Today's geodetic observing strategies are shortly presented, and the geodetic VLBI observables and data modeling are briefly discussed. A short overview is given on existing geodetic VLBI software packages and the statistical approaches that are applied. Necessary improvements of today's analysis software are described. Some of the future expectations and goals of geodetic VLBI are presented and the corresponding consequences for the VLBI technique are explained. This includes consequences in t…
We describe the design of a correlator system for ground and space-based VLBI. The correlator contains unique signal processing functions: flexible LO frequency switching for bandwidth synthesis; 1 ms dump intervals, multi-rate digital signal-processing techniques to allow correlation of signals at different sample rates; and a digital filter for very high resolution cross-power spectra. It also includes autocorrelation, tone extraction, pulsar gating, signal-statistics accumulation.
In our standard geodetic VLBI solutions, we estimate the positions of quasars assuming that their positions do not vary in time. However, in solutions estimating proper motion, a significant number of quasars show apparent proper motion greater than 50 uas/yr. For individual quasars, there are source structure effects that cause apparent proper motion. To examine how coherent the pattern of apparent proper motion is over the sky, we have estimated the vector spherical harmonic components of the observed proper motion using VLBI data from 1980 to 2002. We discuss the physical interpretation of …
We present 27 geodetic VLBI maps of OJ 287 obtained from the archive of the Washington correlator. The observations presented here were made between 1990 October and 1996 December. During this period a sequence of six superluminal components has been identified. We measured the proper motion of these components to be approximately 0.5 mas/yr, which is about twice as high as that seen in previous VLBI observations. These results imply a higher component ejection rate than previously observed, in good agreement with the observed occurrences of radio outbursts. We have examined a possible connect…
We present VLBI observations of the EGRET quasars 0202+149, CTA 26, and 1606+106, as well as additional analysis of VLBI observations of 1156+295 presented in Piner & Kingham (1997b). We have produced 8 and 2 GHz VLBI images at 11 epochs, 8 epochs, and 12 epochs, spanning the years 1989 to 1996, of 0202+149, CTA 26, and 1606+106 respectively. The VLBI data have been taken from the Washington VLBI correlator's geodetic database. We have measured the apparent velocities of the jet components and find that CTA 26 and 1606+106 are superluminal sources, with average apparent speeds of 8.9 and 2.9 h…
We present results of simultaneous dual-frequency (2 GHz and 8 GHz) very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 12 active galactic nuclei with prominent jets. Spectral properties of the jets and evolution of their brightness temperature are discussed. Measured sizes and brightness temperatures of VLBI features are found to be consistent with emission from relativistic shocks dominated by adiabatic losses. Physical scenarios with different magnetic field orientation in the jets are discussed.
We study the most central regions of AGN jets with an angular resolution of tens of micro-arcseconds using VLBI at millimeter wavelengths (mm-VLBI). We present and discuss a new 86 GHz VLBI survey of compact radio sources. We show new high dynamic range images of two nearby radio galaxies (3C 120 and M87). In M87 the size of the compact VLBI core (the jet base) is < 15 Schwarzschild radii. Future mm-VLBI observations at 1 mm and shorter wavelengths should lead to images of galactic and extragalactic radio sources with a spatial resolution down to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central super …
In the framework of the "Groupe de Recherches de Géodésie Spatiale" (GRGS), a rigorous combination of the data from five space geodetic techniques (VLBI, GPS, SLR, LLR and DORIS) is routinely applied to simultaneously determine a Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) and Earth Orientation Parameters (EOP). This analysis is conducted with the software package GINS which has the capability to process data from all five techniques together. Such a combination at the observation level should ultimately facilitate fine geophysical studies of the global Earth system. In this project, Bordeaux Observator…
As part of our study of the VLBI properties of TeV blazar jets, we present here a series of high-resolution 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the parsec-scale jets of the TeV blazars 1ES 1959+650, PKS 2155-304, and 1ES 2344+514, with linear resolutions of about 0.5 pc. Each of these sources was observed with the VLBA at three or four epochs during 1999 and 2000. There is a notable lack of any strong moving components on the VLBI images (in contrast to the rapid superluminal motions seen in EGRET blazars), and the structure of the VLBI jet can be modeled either as a series of sta…
Multi-frequency VLBI observations allow studies of the continuum spectrum in the different parts of the parsec scale jets of AGN, providing information on the physical properties of the plasma and magnetic fields in them. Since VLBI networks cannot be scaled, the range of spatial frequencies observed differs significantly between the different observing frequencies, which makes it difficult to obtain a broadband spectrum of the individual emission features in the jet. In this paper we discuss a model-fitting based spectral extraction method, which can significantly relieve this problem. The me…
We have combined Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data from several programs in order to resolve differences in reported parsec-scale jet speeds for the TeV gamma-ray source Mkn501. Data from the VLBA 2cm survey, and 8 and 15 GHz data from the Radio Reference Frame Image Database, have been combined with data from a 5 GHz VSOP Space VLBI observation to determine the apparent motions of jet components in this source. The combined data set consists of 12 observations between April 1995 and July 1999. Four jet components are detected at most epochs, all of which are clearly sub-luminal (i…
We present here new VLBI observations of one FR-I radio galaxy (NGC2484) and two Broad Line FR-II radio galaxies (3C109 and 3C382). For 3C109 new VLA maps are also shown. These sources belong to a complete sample of radio galaxies under study for a better knowledge of their structures at parsec resolution. The parsec structure of these 3 objects is very similar: asymmetric emission which we interpret as the core plus a one-sided jet. The parsec scale jet is always on the same side of the main kpc-scale jet. The limit on the jet to counterjet brightness ratio, the ratio of the core radio power …
We present an update of the parsec scale properties of the Bologna Complete Sample consisting of 95 radio sources from the B2 Catalog of Radio Sources and the Third Cambridge Revised Catalog (3CR), with z < 0.1. Thanks to recent new data we have now parsec scale images for 76 sources of the sample. Most of them show a one-sided jet structure but we find a higher fraction of two-sided sources in comparison with previous flux-limited VLBI surveys. A few peculiar sources are presented and discussed in more detail.
Positions and maps of 1608 new compact sources were obtained in twelve sessions observed during 1994--2002 at the VLBA network at 8.4/2.3 GHz. These sources are recommended for use as calibrators for phase reference imaging and as geodetic sources for astrometric/geodetic VLBI applications.
We present the first result of VLBI observations of the blueshifted water maser emission from the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC5793, which we combine with new and previous VLBI observations of continuum emission at 1.7, 5.0, 8.4, 15, and 22 GHz. Maser emission was detected earlier in single-dish observations and found to have both red- and blueshifted features relative to the systemic velocity. We could image only the blueshifted emission, which is located 3.6 pc southwest of the 22 GHz continuum peak. The blueshifted emission was found to originate in two clusters that are separated by 0.7 millia…
We compute the effective values of apparent transverse velocity and flux boosting factors for the VLBI radio knots of blazar jets, by integrating over the angular distributions of these quantities across the widths of jets with finite opening angles but constant velocities. For high bulk Lorentz factors (Gamma > 10) variations across the jet can be quite large if the opening angle, omega, is even a few degrees on sub-parsec scales. The resulting apparent speeds are often much lower than those obtained from the usual analyses that ignore the finite jet opening angles. We can thus reconcile the …
We present results of long-term high-frequency VLBI monitoring of the relativistic jet in 3C279, consisting of 18 epochs at 22 GHz from 1991 to 1997 and 10 epochs at 43 GHz from 1995 to 1997. Three major results of this study are: apparent speeds measured for six superluminal components range from 4.8 to 7.5 c (H_{0}=70 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, q_{0}=0.1), variations in the total radio flux are due primarily to changes in the VLBI core flux, and the uniform-sphere brightness temperature of the VLBI core is about 1 x 10^{13} K at 22 GHz after 1995, one of the highest direct estimates of a brightness…
VLBI is unique, among the space geodetic techniques, in its contribution to defining and maintaining the International Celestial Reference Frame, providing precise measurements of coordinates of extragalactic radiosources. The quest for increasing accuracy of VLBI geodetic products has lead to a deeper revision of all aspects that might introduce errors in the analysis. The departure of the observed sources from perfect, stable, compact and achromatic celestial targets falls within this category. This paper is concerned with the impact of unaccounted frequency-dependent position shifts of sour…
The parsec scale properties of low power radio galaxies are reviewed here, using the available data on 12 FR I galaxies. The most frequent radio structure is an asymmetric parsec-scale morphology, i.e. core and one-sided jet. It is shared by 9 (possibly 10) of the 12 mapped radio galaxies. One (possibly 2) of the other galaxies has (have) a two-sided jet emission. Two sources are known from published data to show a proper motion; we present here evidence for proper motion in two more galaxies. Therefore, in the present sample we have 4 radio galaxies with a measured proper motion. One of these…
We present 5 GHz global VLBI observations of the two Fanaroff Riley Type I radio galaxies B2 0836+29 and 3C465 (2335+26). For 3C465 we present also 1.7 GHz and 8.4 GHz global VLBI data. In addition VLA observations were used to obtain arsecond resolution continuum and polarization maps at 5 GHz. Both sources are very asymmetric on the parsec-scale, with a core and a one-sided jet, aligned with the main arcsecond scale jet. We place a limit on the milliarcsecond jet to counterjet brightness ratio B$_{jet}$/B$_{cjet}$ \gtsim 20 and \gtsim 30 for B2 0836+29 and 3C465 respectively. For 3C465 the s…
Summarizes current status of radio interferometry at radio frequencies between Earth-based receivers, for astrometric and geodetic applications. Emphasizes theoretical models of VLBI observables that are required to extract results at the present accuracy levels of 1 cm and 1 nanoradian. Highlights the achievements of VLBI during the past two decades in reference frames, Earth orientation, atmospheric effects on microwave propagation, and relativity.
The problem of phaseless aperture synthesis is of current interest in phase-unstable VLBI with a small number of elements when either the use of closure phases is not possible (a two-element interferometer) or their quality and number are not enough for acceptable image reconstruction by standard adaptive calibration methods. Therefore, we discuss the problem of unique image reconstruction only from the spectrum magnitude of a source. We suggest an efficient method for phaseless VLBI mapping of compact extragalactic radio sources. This method is based on the reconstruction of the spectrum magn…
In order to investigate the genesis of powerful radio jet, we have mapped the central 10 pc region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 6251 with a 0.2 pc resolution using Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) at two radio frequencies, 5 GHz and 15 GHz, we have found the sub-parsec-scale counterjet for the first time in this radio galaxy. This discovery allows us to investigate the jet acceleration based on the relativistic beaming model.
The Extragalactic Lens VLBI Imaging Survey (ELVIS) searches for central images of lensed radio quasars, in order to measure the central density profiles of distant galaxies. Here we present sensitive multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of PMN J1838-3427 at 8 GHz, with a 1 sigma noise level of 38 microJy beam^(-1). Based on the absence of a central image of the background source at this level, we explore the possibilities for the central matter distribution in the lens galaxy. A power-law density profile, rho ~ r^(-gamma), must have gamma > 1.93. Thus the density profile is…
The long-term evolution of the synchrotron emission from the parsec-scale jet in the quasar 3C345 is analysed, on the basis of multi-frequency monitoring with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and covering the period 1979-1994. We combine the model fits from 44 VLBI observations of 3C345 made at 8 different frequencies between 2.3 and 100GHz. We calculate the turnover frequency, turnover flux density, integrated 4-25GHz flux and 4-25GHz luminosity of the core and the moving features. The core has an estimated mean luminosity of 7.1+/-3.5 * 10^42 erg/s; the estimated total luminosity of …
We have calculated inverse-Compton Doppler factors for 3C 279 using the collection of VLBI data recently published by us, and the collection of multiwavelength spectra recently published by Hartman et al. From the Doppler factor and superluminal apparent speed, we then calculate the Lorentz factor and angle to the line-of-sight of the parsec-scale relativistic jet. We model the jet components as homogeneous spheres and the VLBI core as an unresolved inhomogeneous conical jet. The conical-jet model can be made to match both the observed X-ray emission and the VLBI properties of the core with a …
We report the most important results on the parsec-scale properties of a complete sample of radio galaxies carried out at radio frequencies with the Global VLBI array and with the VLBA. Relativistic parsec-scale jets are common both in FRI and FRII radio galaxies, and their orientation to the line of sight is in agreement with the expectations from the unified schemes for radio loud AGNs. Proper motion has been detected in a few FRI galaxies in the sample. FRI and FRII radio galaxies exhibit very similar properties on the parsec-scale. Finally a few radio sources in the sample show evidence of…
The upper envelope of the amplitude of the VLBI visibility function usually represents the most compact structural pattern of extragalactic radio sources, in particular, the "core-jet" morphologies. By fitting the envelope to a circular Gaussian model in ~3000 parsec-scale core-jet structures, we find that the apparent angular size shows significant power-law dependence on the observing frequency (power index n = -0.95 pm 0.37). The dependence is likely to result from synchrotron self-absorption in the inhomogeneous jet and not the free-free absorption (n = -2.5), nor the simple scatter broade…
One of the most important problems in the study of AGN is understanding the detailed geometry, physics, and evolution of the central engines and their environments. The leading models involve an accretion disk and torus around a central black hole. Much of this torus should be comprised of atomic gas, detectable in absorption toward the bright inner radio jets. In the last few years, a number of compact symmetric radio sources have been found to exhibit HI absorption, at or near the systemic velocity, toward the central parsecs. Understanding the kinematics of the HI detected toward the centra…
Observations of the core of the giant radio galaxy NGC315 made with VLBI interferometers are discussed in the context of a relativistic jet. The sidedness asymmetry suggests Doppler favoritism from a relativistic jet. The presence of moving features in the jet as well as jet counter--jet brightness ratios hint at an accelerating, relativistic jet. An increasing jet velocity is also supported by a comparison of the jet's observed properties with the predictions of an adiabatic expansion model. On the parsec scale, the jet is unpolarized at a wavelength of 6 cm to a very high degree in clear dis…
The generalized maximum entropy method (GMEM) is a special modification of the standard maximum entropy method (MEM) which seeks solutions in the space of complex functions. In this work a reduced version of the GMEM intended for reconstructing real images with positive and negative values is used. As compared with the standard MEM, intended for the reconstruction of only non-negative images, the GMEM allows us to obtain higher-quality images with a much lower level of nonlinear distortions caused by errors in the data. Here, we present the results of the GMEM imaging of 36 selected extragalac…
Most of energy carried by relativistic AGN jets remains undetected until hundreds of kiloparsecs where interaction with intergalactic medium produces hot spots. The jet's hidden energy is only partially dissipated at smaller scales, from parsecs to kiloparsecs. Several media may play the role of the ``prime mover'': ions, pairs or large scale magnetic fields. Analyzing VLBI polarization structures of relativistic parsec scale jets we conclude that large-scale magnetic fields can explain the salient polarization properties of parsec-scale AGN jets. This implies that large-scale magnetic fields …
We present new VLA, MERLIN and VLBI images for the radio galaxy 3C 338, and the results of the monitoring of its arcsecond core flux density. Present high sensitivity observations allow us to investigate the radio structure of this source and to confirm the presence of two symmetric parsec scale jets. Morphological changes between different epochs are evident and a proper motion with $β\sim$ 0.4h$^{-1}$ has been derived allowing us to give a lower limit constraint for the Hubble constant. While the steep spectrum large scale structure of 3C 338 could be a relic emission, the small scale struct…
We present new VLBI observations of Brightest Cluster Galaxies in eight nearby Abell clusters. These data show a possible difference between Brightest Cluster Galaxies in cool core clusters (two-sided pc scale jets) and in non cool core clusters (one-sided pc scale jets). We suggest that this difference could be due to the jet interaction with the surrounding medium. More data are necessary to discuss if pc-scale properties of Brightest Cluster Galaxies are influenced by their peculiar morphology and position in the center of rich clusters of galaxies.
In this paper we present the results of VLBI observations of six radio galaxies belonging to the 2-Jy sample. The selected objects are 3C17, PKS 0620-52, PKS 0625-35, PKS 1318-43, PKS 1333-33 and 3C317. The first is a high power radio galaxy and the remainder are low power objects. Our observations were carried out with a set of different arrays and frequencies, and cover a range of resolutions from a few mas to a few tens of mas. Parsec-scale images are presented and discussed in the light of unification for radio loud galaxies. Estimates for the intrinsic plasma speed in these objects in the…
A sub-parsec scale radio counterjet has been detected in the nucleus of the closest radio galaxy, Centaurus A (NGC 5128), with VLBI imaging at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz. This is one of the first detections of a VLBI counterjet and provides new constraints on the kinematics of the radio jets emerging from the nucleus of Cen A. A bright, compact core is seen at 8.4 GHz, along with a jet extending along P.A. 51 degrees. The core is completely absorbed at 2.3 GHz. Our images show a much wider gap between the base of the main jet and the counterjet at 2.3 GHz than at 8.4 GHz and also that the core has an ext…
We present new radio data completing the imaging for a sample of 30 nearby (z < 0.2) BL Lac objects on parsec and kiloparsec scale. The sample is composed of both high and low luminosity sources and it is therefore an ideal test bed for unified schemes in the low power regime. VLBI and VLA data are used, thus providing information on both extended and inner, beamed components. We find morphologies and jet parameters consistent with a parent population composed of FR I radio galaxies, i.e. in agreement with the unified scheme. We also present a comparison to high quality HST data; we find a cor…
The Seyfert 1 nucleus of NGC 4395 is energized by a black hole of 360,000 Solar masses (Peterson et al.), making it one of only two nuclear black holes of intermediate mass, one thousand to one million Solar masses, detected in the radio regime. Building upon UV and X-ray evidence for outflows from this Seyfert nucleus, the VLBI High Sensitivity Array was used at 1.4 GHz to search for extended structure on scales greater than 5 mas (0.1 pc). Elongated emission was discovered, extending over 15 mas (0.3 pc) and suggesting an outflow on sub-parsec scales from this intermediate-mass black hole. T…
We investigate the frequency-dependent radio properties of the jet of the luminous high-redshift (z = 3.2) radio quasar PKS 1402+044 (J1405+0415) by means of radio interferometric observations. The observational data were obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) at 1.6 and 5 GHz, supplemented by other multi-frequency observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA; 2.3, 8.4, and 15 GHz) and the Very Large Array (VLA; 1.4, 5, 15, and 43 GHz). The observations span a period of 7 years. We find that the luminous high-redshift quasar PKS 1402+044 has a pronounced "core-jet" m…
We present circular polarization results from a 5 GHz survey of the parsec-scale polarization properties of 40 AGN made with the VLBA. We find 11 circular polarization detections at the 3 sigma level or higher. This nearly quadruples the number of sources detected in circular polarization at VLBI resolution. We find no correlation between fractional linear and circular polarization across our sample. A likely explanation is external Faraday depolarization in the cores of AGN which reduces linear polarization but leaves circular polarization unchanged. In comparing ours and other recent results…
In this paper, we propose to use the scatter of celestial pole offset (CPO) series obtained from VLBI observations as a measure of the accuracy of the celestial reference frame (CRF) realizations. Several scatter indices (SIs) including those proposed for the first time are investigated. The first SI is based on analysis of residuals of CPO series w.r.t. Free Core Nutation (FCN) model. The second group of SIs includes Allan deviation and its extensions, which allow one to treat unequal and multidimensional observations. Application of these criteria to several radio source catalogues showed th…
