We present results of simultaneous dual-frequency (2 GHz and 8 GHz) very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of 12 active galactic nuclei with prominent jets. Spectral properties of the jets and evolution of their brightness temperature are discussed. Measured sizes and brightness temperatures of VLBI features are found to be consistent with emission from relativistic shocks dominated by adiabatic losses. Physical scenarios with different magnetic field orientation in the jets are discussed.
We report on an ongoing effort to image active galactic nuclei simultaneously observed at 2.3 and 8.6 GHz in the framework of a long-term VLBI project RDV (Research and Development - VLBA) started in 1994 aiming to observe compact extragalactic radio sources in the astrometric/geodetic mode. Observations of bright extragalactic sources are carried out bi-monthly making up to six sessions per year with participation of all ten VLBA antennas and up to nine additional (geodetic and EVN) radio telescopes. Analysis of single-epoch results for 370 quasars, BL Lacs and radio galaxies is presented. We…
We study the most central regions of AGN jets with an angular resolution of tens of micro-arcseconds using VLBI at millimeter wavelengths (mm-VLBI). We present and discuss a new 86 GHz VLBI survey of compact radio sources. We show new high dynamic range images of two nearby radio galaxies (3C 120 and M87). In M87 the size of the compact VLBI core (the jet base) is < 15 Schwarzschild radii. Future mm-VLBI observations at 1 mm and shorter wavelengths should lead to images of galactic and extragalactic radio sources with a spatial resolution down to a few Schwarzschild radii of the central super …
As part of our study of the VLBI properties of TeV blazar jets, we present here a series of high-resolution 15 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the parsec-scale jets of the TeV blazars 1ES 1959+650, PKS 2155-304, and 1ES 2344+514, with linear resolutions of about 0.5 pc. Each of these sources was observed with the VLBA at three or four epochs during 1999 and 2000. There is a notable lack of any strong moving components on the VLBI images (in contrast to the rapid superluminal motions seen in EGRET blazars), and the structure of the VLBI jet can be modeled either as a series of sta…
Multi-frequency VLBI observations allow studies of the continuum spectrum in the different parts of the parsec scale jets of AGN, providing information on the physical properties of the plasma and magnetic fields in them. Since VLBI networks cannot be scaled, the range of spatial frequencies observed differs significantly between the different observing frequencies, which makes it difficult to obtain a broadband spectrum of the individual emission features in the jet. In this paper we discuss a model-fitting based spectral extraction method, which can significantly relieve this problem. The me…
We have combined Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data from several programs in order to resolve differences in reported parsec-scale jet speeds for the TeV gamma-ray source Mkn501. Data from the VLBA 2cm survey, and 8 and 15 GHz data from the Radio Reference Frame Image Database, have been combined with data from a 5 GHz VSOP Space VLBI observation to determine the apparent motions of jet components in this source. The combined data set consists of 12 observations between April 1995 and July 1999. Four jet components are detected at most epochs, all of which are clearly sub-luminal (i…
We present here new VLBI observations of one FR-I radio galaxy (NGC2484) and two Broad Line FR-II radio galaxies (3C109 and 3C382). For 3C109 new VLA maps are also shown. These sources belong to a complete sample of radio galaxies under study for a better knowledge of their structures at parsec resolution. The parsec structure of these 3 objects is very similar: asymmetric emission which we interpret as the core plus a one-sided jet. The parsec scale jet is always on the same side of the main kpc-scale jet. The limit on the jet to counterjet brightness ratio, the ratio of the core radio power …
We present an update of the parsec scale properties of the Bologna Complete Sample consisting of 95 radio sources from the B2 Catalog of Radio Sources and the Third Cambridge Revised Catalog (3CR), with z < 0.1. Thanks to recent new data we have now parsec scale images for 76 sources of the sample. Most of them show a one-sided jet structure but we find a higher fraction of two-sided sources in comparison with previous flux-limited VLBI surveys. A few peculiar sources are presented and discussed in more detail.
We present the first result of VLBI observations of the blueshifted water maser emission from the type 2 Seyfert galaxy NGC5793, which we combine with new and previous VLBI observations of continuum emission at 1.7, 5.0, 8.4, 15, and 22 GHz. Maser emission was detected earlier in single-dish observations and found to have both red- and blueshifted features relative to the systemic velocity. We could image only the blueshifted emission, which is located 3.6 pc southwest of the 22 GHz continuum peak. The blueshifted emission was found to originate in two clusters that are separated by 0.7 millia…
We compute the effective values of apparent transverse velocity and flux boosting factors for the VLBI radio knots of blazar jets, by integrating over the angular distributions of these quantities across the widths of jets with finite opening angles but constant velocities. For high bulk Lorentz factors (Gamma > 10) variations across the jet can be quite large if the opening angle, omega, is even a few degrees on sub-parsec scales. The resulting apparent speeds are often much lower than those obtained from the usual analyses that ignore the finite jet opening angles. We can thus reconcile the …
We present results of long-term high-frequency VLBI monitoring of the relativistic jet in 3C279, consisting of 18 epochs at 22 GHz from 1991 to 1997 and 10 epochs at 43 GHz from 1995 to 1997. Three major results of this study are: apparent speeds measured for six superluminal components range from 4.8 to 7.5 c (H_{0}=70 km s^{-1} Mpc^{-1}, q_{0}=0.1), variations in the total radio flux are due primarily to changes in the VLBI core flux, and the uniform-sphere brightness temperature of the VLBI core is about 1 x 10^{13} K at 22 GHz after 1995, one of the highest direct estimates of a brightness…
The parsec scale properties of low power radio galaxies are reviewed here, using the available data on 12 FR I galaxies. The most frequent radio structure is an asymmetric parsec-scale morphology, i.e. core and one-sided jet. It is shared by 9 (possibly 10) of the 12 mapped radio galaxies. One (possibly 2) of the other galaxies has (have) a two-sided jet emission. Two sources are known from published data to show a proper motion; we present here evidence for proper motion in two more galaxies. Therefore, in the present sample we have 4 radio galaxies with a measured proper motion. One of these…
We present 5 GHz global VLBI observations of the two Fanaroff Riley Type I radio galaxies B2 0836+29 and 3C465 (2335+26). For 3C465 we present also 1.7 GHz and 8.4 GHz global VLBI data. In addition VLA observations were used to obtain arsecond resolution continuum and polarization maps at 5 GHz. Both sources are very asymmetric on the parsec-scale, with a core and a one-sided jet, aligned with the main arcsecond scale jet. We place a limit on the milliarcsecond jet to counterjet brightness ratio B$_{jet}$/B$_{cjet}$ \gtsim 20 and \gtsim 30 for B2 0836+29 and 3C465 respectively. For 3C465 the s…
In order to investigate the genesis of powerful radio jet, we have mapped the central 10 pc region of the nearby radio galaxy NGC 6251 with a 0.2 pc resolution using Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) at two radio frequencies, 5 GHz and 15 GHz, we have found the sub-parsec-scale counterjet for the first time in this radio galaxy. This discovery allows us to investigate the jet acceleration based on the relativistic beaming model.
The long-term evolution of the synchrotron emission from the parsec-scale jet in the quasar 3C345 is analysed, on the basis of multi-frequency monitoring with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and covering the period 1979-1994. We combine the model fits from 44 VLBI observations of 3C345 made at 8 different frequencies between 2.3 and 100GHz. We calculate the turnover frequency, turnover flux density, integrated 4-25GHz flux and 4-25GHz luminosity of the core and the moving features. The core has an estimated mean luminosity of 7.1+/-3.5 * 10^42 erg/s; the estimated total luminosity of …
We have calculated inverse-Compton Doppler factors for 3C 279 using the collection of VLBI data recently published by us, and the collection of multiwavelength spectra recently published by Hartman et al. From the Doppler factor and superluminal apparent speed, we then calculate the Lorentz factor and angle to the line-of-sight of the parsec-scale relativistic jet. We model the jet components as homogeneous spheres and the VLBI core as an unresolved inhomogeneous conical jet. The conical-jet model can be made to match both the observed X-ray emission and the VLBI properties of the core with a …
The upper envelope of the amplitude of the VLBI visibility function usually represents the most compact structural pattern of extragalactic radio sources, in particular, the "core-jet" morphologies. By fitting the envelope to a circular Gaussian model in ~3000 parsec-scale core-jet structures, we find that the apparent angular size shows significant power-law dependence on the observing frequency (power index n = -0.95 pm 0.37). The dependence is likely to result from synchrotron self-absorption in the inhomogeneous jet and not the free-free absorption (n = -2.5), nor the simple scatter broade…
One of the most important problems in the study of AGN is understanding the detailed geometry, physics, and evolution of the central engines and their environments. The leading models involve an accretion disk and torus around a central black hole. Much of this torus should be comprised of atomic gas, detectable in absorption toward the bright inner radio jets. In the last few years, a number of compact symmetric radio sources have been found to exhibit HI absorption, at or near the systemic velocity, toward the central parsecs. Understanding the kinematics of the HI detected toward the centra…
Most of energy carried by relativistic AGN jets remains undetected until hundreds of kiloparsecs where interaction with intergalactic medium produces hot spots. The jet's hidden energy is only partially dissipated at smaller scales, from parsecs to kiloparsecs. Several media may play the role of the ``prime mover'': ions, pairs or large scale magnetic fields. Analyzing VLBI polarization structures of relativistic parsec scale jets we conclude that large-scale magnetic fields can explain the salient polarization properties of parsec-scale AGN jets. This implies that large-scale magnetic fields …
We present new VLA, MERLIN and VLBI images for the radio galaxy 3C 338, and the results of the monitoring of its arcsecond core flux density. Present high sensitivity observations allow us to investigate the radio structure of this source and to confirm the presence of two symmetric parsec scale jets. Morphological changes between different epochs are evident and a proper motion with $β\sim$ 0.4h$^{-1}$ has been derived allowing us to give a lower limit constraint for the Hubble constant. While the steep spectrum large scale structure of 3C 338 could be a relic emission, the small scale struct…
A sub-parsec scale radio counterjet has been detected in the nucleus of the closest radio galaxy, Centaurus A (NGC 5128), with VLBI imaging at 2.3 and 8.4 GHz. This is one of the first detections of a VLBI counterjet and provides new constraints on the kinematics of the radio jets emerging from the nucleus of Cen A. A bright, compact core is seen at 8.4 GHz, along with a jet extending along P.A. 51 degrees. The core is completely absorbed at 2.3 GHz. Our images show a much wider gap between the base of the main jet and the counterjet at 2.3 GHz than at 8.4 GHz and also that the core has an ext…
We present new radio data completing the imaging for a sample of 30 nearby (z < 0.2) BL Lac objects on parsec and kiloparsec scale. The sample is composed of both high and low luminosity sources and it is therefore an ideal test bed for unified schemes in the low power regime. VLBI and VLA data are used, thus providing information on both extended and inner, beamed components. We find morphologies and jet parameters consistent with a parent population composed of FR I radio galaxies, i.e. in agreement with the unified scheme. We also present a comparison to high quality HST data; we find a cor…
We present analysis of the flux and polarization variability of parsec scale radio jets from a dual-frequency, six-epoch, VLBA polarization experiment monitoring 12 blazars. The observations were made at 15 and 22 GHz at bimonthly intervals over 1996. Here we analyze the flux, fractional polarization, and polarization position angle behavior of core regions and jet features, considering both the linear trends of these quantities with time and more rapid fluctuations about the linear trends. The dual frequency nature of the observations allows us to examine spectral evolution, to separate Farad…
We investigate the frequency-dependent radio properties of the jet of the luminous high-redshift (z = 3.2) radio quasar PKS 1402+044 (J1405+0415) by means of radio interferometric observations. The observational data were obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) at 1.6 and 5 GHz, supplemented by other multi-frequency observations with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA; 2.3, 8.4, and 15 GHz) and the Very Large Array (VLA; 1.4, 5, 15, and 43 GHz). The observations span a period of 7 years. We find that the luminous high-redshift quasar PKS 1402+044 has a pronounced "core-jet" m…
We have observed the BL Lac object Markarian 501 at 1.4 GHz with the High Sensitivity Array and at 86 GHz with the global VLBI mm array. Thanks to the great resolution and sensitivity provided by these instruments, we probe regions of the radio jets never accessed before. The new data at 1.4 GHz allow us to map the one-sided jet at large distances from the core, and to constrain jet properties thanks to the high jet to counter-jet brightness ratio. The 86 GHz data give us a high resolution image of the nuclear region. Putting together these new results and available published data we discuss t…
We present the results of a high angular resolution study of the BL Lac object Markarian 501 in the radio band. We consider data taken at 14 different epochs, ranging between 1.6 GHz and 22 GHz in frequency, and including new Space VLBI observations obtained on 2001 March 5 and 6 at 1.6 and 5 GHz. We study the kinematics of the parsec-scale jet and estimate its bulk velocity and orientation with respect to the line of sight. Limb brightened structure in the jet is clearly visible in our data and we discuss its possible origin in terms of velocity gradients in the jet. Quasi-simultaneous multi-…
Compact radio cores in radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are classical targets of Very-Long-Baseline interferometric (VLBI) research. Until today little has been known about their X-ray properties in comparison to radio-quiet AGNs. Here, we present results from a systematic X-ray spectral survey of radio-loud AGNs. This study is based on a statistically complete sample of regularly monitored compact, extragalactic radio jets from the VLBA 2 cm Survey and makes use of high-quality X-ray spectroscopic data from the archives of the X-ray observatories ASCA, BeppoSax, CHANDRA, and XMM-Newto…
We present a new, complete, sample of 95 radio sources selected from the B2 and 3CR catalogues, with z < 0.1. Since no selection effect on the core radio power, jet velocity, or source orientation is present, this sample is well suited for statistical studies. In this first paper we present the observational status of all sources on the parsec (mas) and kiloparsec (arcsec) scale; we give new parsec-scale data for 28 sources and discuss their parsec-scale properties. Combining these data with those in the literature, information on the parsec-scale morphology is available for a total of 53 radi…
Relativistic outflows represent one of the best-suited tools to probe the physics of AGN. Numerical modelling of internal structure of the relativistic outflows on parsec scales provides important clues about the conditions and dynamics of the material in the immediate vicinity of the central black holes in AGN. We investigate possible causes of the structural patterns and regularities observed in the parsec-scale jet of the well known quasar 3C 273. We compare the model with the radio structure observed in 3C 273 on parsec scales using very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and constrain th…
What causes the dichotomy between very powerful and very weak radio emission from AGNs? Perhaps the engines are the same but the jets get disrupted by dense ISM in radio-quiet objects, or else the engines are intrinsically different with jet power scaling with, say, black hole spin. To distinguish, one can look for interaction between the jets and the NLR and measure the jet speed close to the core using VLBI, before environmental effects become important. We find that in radio-quiet AGN, the jets appear slower and have a greater tendency to bend, and that one-sidedness and flat-spectrum cores…
The Caltech-Jodrell Bank VLBI surveys of bright extragalactic radio sources north of declination 35 deg were carried out between 1990 and 1995 using the Mark-II system, achieving images with a resolution of about 1 mas at 5 GHz. The CJ1 survey (together with the older `PR' survey) includes 200 objects with 5 GHz flux density greater than 0.7 Jy; the CJ2 survey includes 193 flat-spectrum sources with 5 GHz flux density greater than 0.35 Jy; and we have defined a complete flux-density limited sample, CJF, of 293 flat-spectrum sources stronger than 0.35 Jy. We summarize the definition of the samp…
The TeV-emitting BL Lac object Mkn 421 was observed with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) at three closely-spaced epochs one-month apart in March-April 1998. The source was also monitored at very-high gamma-ray energies (TeV measurements) during the same period in an attempt to search for correlations between TeV variability and the evolution of the radio morphology on parsec scales. While the VLBI maps show no temporal changes in the Mkn 421 VLBI jet, there is strong evidence of complex variability in both the total and polarized fluxes of the VLBI core of Mkn 421 and in its spectrum …
The results of VLBI observations of the quasar 3C273, obtained during a multi-frequency campaign in late 1992 in the radio, millimeter and X-ray bands are presented and discussed. The VLBI observations were made at 22 GHz with a Global Array and at 43 GHz with the Very Long Baseline Array. Hybrid maps and modelfits were made in order to look for any short time scale structural variations of the inner part of the radio jet. In 42 days 3C273 was observed 5 times at roughly 10 day intervals. The jet structure did not show dramatic changes in that period. However, we were able to follow the change…
We report on centimeter VLA and VLBI observations of the giant, low power radio galaxy 1144+35. These observations are sensitive to structures on scales from less than 1 parsec to greater than 1 megaparsec. Diffuse steep spectrum lobes on the megaparsec scale are consistent with an age of $\sim$ 10$^8$ years. On the parsec scale, a complex jet component is seen to move away from the center of activity with an apparent velocity 2.7 h$^{-1}_{50}$ c. It shows a central spine -- shear layer morphology. A faint parsec scale counterjet is detected and an intrinsic jet velocity of 0.95 c and angle to…
Results are presented from long term VLBI monitoring of the parsec-scale radio jet in 3C120, primarily at 5 and 1.7 GHz. Numerous superluminal features are followed, some over large fractional distances from the core. The speeds of the features are not all the same, but vary by less than a factor of 2. The superluminal features extend to core distances of over 0.2 arcseconds and the region of slowing has not been found. The 1.7 GHz images show evidence for stationary features in addition to the superluminal features. The structure of the jet in the vicinity of the most likely stationary featur…
A complete sample of 27 radio galaxies was selected from the B2 and 3CR catalogs, in order to study their properties on the milliarcsecond scale. In the Appendix of this paper we present new radio images for 12 of them. Thanks to the present data, all the sources in this sample have been imaged at mas resolution. We discuss the general results. In particular we stress the evidence for high velocity jets in low power radio galaxies, we compare high and low power sources, and discuss the source properties in the light of the unified scheme models. We derive that the properties of parsec scale je…
We present thirty VLBI images of the TeV blazar Markarian 421 (1101+384) at fifteen epochs spanning the time range from 1994 to 1997, and at six different frequencies from 2.3 to 43 GHz. The imaged observations include a high-resolution 5 GHz VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP) observation with the HALCA satellite on 1997 November 14; full-track VLBA observations from 1994 April, 1996 November, and 1997 May at frequencies between 5 and 43 GHz; six epochs of VLBA snapshot observations at frequencies between 2 and 15 GHz from Radio Reference Frame studies; and five geodetic VLBI observations…
The apparent position of the "core" in a parsec-scale radio jet (a compact, bright emitting region at the narrow end of the jet) depends on the observing frequency, owing to synchrotron self-absorption and external absorption. While providing a tool probing physical conditions in the vicinity of the core, this dependency poses problems for astrometric studies using compact radio sources. We investigated the frequency-dependent shift in the positions of the cores (core shift) observed with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) in parsec-scale jets. We discuss related physics, as well as its …
Results of high-resolution simultaneous multi-frequency 8.1-15.4 GHz VLBA polarimetric observations of relativistic jets in active galactic nuclei (the MOJAVE-2 project) are analyzed. We compare characteristics of VLBI features with jet model predictions and test if adiabatic expansion is a dominating mechanism for the evolution of relativistic shocks in parsec-scale AGN jets. We also discuss magnetic field configuration, both predicted by the model and deduced from electric vector position angle measurements.
We developed theory of particle acceleration inside the relativistic rotating electron-positron force-free jet with spiral magnetic field. We considered perturbation of stationary magnetic field structure and found that acceleration takes place in the regions where the Alfven resonant condition with the eigenmodes in the jet is fulfilled. Acceleration process and synchrotron losses combined together form power law energy spectrum of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons with index between 2 and 3 depending upon initial energy of injected particles. Synchrotron emission of these electrons a…
We have conducted VLBI observations of water maser and radio continuum emission in the nucleus of NGC 3079. The 22 GHz maser emission arises in compact clumps, distributed along an axis that is aligned with the major axis of the galactic disk. The velocities of the masers are consistent with their lying in the inner parsec of a molecular disk rotating in the same sense as the rest of the galaxy. However, the velocity field has a significant non-rotational component, which may indicate supersonic turbulence. The bright maser emission is not coincident with any detected compact 22 GHz continuum …
The quasar B2005+403 located behind the Cygnus region, is a suitable object for studying the interplay between propagation effects, which are extrinsic to the source and source intrinsic variability. On the basis of VLBI experiments performed at 1.6, 5, 8, 15, 22, and 43GHz between 1992-2003 and parallel multi-frequency monitoring of the total flux density, we investigated the variability of total flux density and source structure. Below 8 GHz, the point-like VLBI source is affected by scatter-broadening of the turbulent interstellar medium, which is located along the line of sight and likely …
We present five epochs of 15 GHz VLBA observations of 13 AGN. These observations were specially calibrated to detect parsec scale circular polarization and our calibration techniques are discussed and analyzed in detail. We obtained reliable detections of parsec scale circular polarization in the radio jets of 4 AGN: 3C84, PKS 0528+134, 3C273, and 3C279. For each of these objects our detections are at the level of ~ 0.3-1% local fractional circular polarization. Our observations are consistent across multiple epochs (and different calibration techniques) in the sign and magnitude of the circul…
We present Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of the TeV blazars H 1426+428, 1ES 1959+650, and PKS 2155-304 obtained during the years 2001 through 2004. We observed H 1426+428 at four epochs at 8 GHz, and found that its parsec-scale structure consisted of a ~17 mJy core and a single ~3 mJy jet component with an apparent speed of 2.09 +/- 0.53c. The blazar 1ES 1959+650 was observed at three epochs at frequencies of 15 and 22 GHz. Spectral index information from these dual-frequency observations was used to definitively identify the core of the parsec-scale structure. PKS 2155-304 was …
