The electrical resistivity and Hall coefficient of LaFeAsO0.95F0.05 polycrystalline samples were measured in pulsed magnetic fields up to m0H = 60 T from room temperature to 1.5 K. The resistance of the normal state shows a negative temperature coefficient (dr/dT < 0) below 70 K for this composition, indicating insulating ground state in underdoped LaFeAsO system in contrast to heavily doped compound. The charge carrier density obtained from Hall effect can be described as constant plus a thermally activated term with an energy gap DE = 630 K. Upper critical field, Hc2, estimated from resistivity measurements, exceeds 75 T with zero-field Tc = 26.3 K, suggesting an unconventional nature for superconductivity.
In underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (YBCO) with x = 6.63, the opening of the pseudogap at T^* ~ 160 K has a strong effect on the Hall angle tan(theta). While the Hall response is significantly reduced, the diagonal current is relatively unaffected. The Hall conductivity suppression continues deep into the flux-flow state (from T_c to 40 K), as an anomalous suppression of the vortex Hall current.
It has recently been proposed that the Fermi surface of underdoped high Tc copper oxide materials within the charge-ordered regime consists of a diamond-shaped electron pocket constructed from arcs connected at vertices. We show here that on modeling the in-plane magnetotransport of such a Fermi surface using the Shockley-Chambers tube integral approach and a uniform scattering time, several key features of the normal state in-plane transport of the underdoped copper oxide systems can be understood. These include the sign reversal in the Hall coefficient, the positive magnetoresistance and mag…
We report scanning Hall probe microscopy of highly underdoped superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} with T_c ranging from 5 to 15 K which showed distinct flux bundles with less than one superconducting flux quantum (Phi_0) through the sample surface. The sub-Phi_0 features occurred more frequently for lower T_c, were more mobile than conventional vortices, and occurred more readily when the sample was cooled with an in-plane field component. We show that these features are consistent with kinked stacks of pancake vortices.
We report on measurements of the resistivity and Hall coefficient in underdoped GdBa2Cu3O7-d epitaxial thin films grown by off-axis magnetron sputtering. The films have been lithographically patterned allowing precise measurements of the temperature dependencies of the inverse Hall constant RH-1 and of the Hall angle theta_H. We find that RH-1 is linear in temperature between 300K and the pseudogap temperature T*, whereas cot(theta_H) displays a perfect T2 temperature dependence between typically 300 and 100K. We observe for all the samples that the temperature at which the temperature depende…
The behaviour of the Hall ratio $R_{H}(T)$ as a function of temperature is one of the most intriguing normal state properties of cuprate superconductors. One feature of all the data is a maximum of $R_{H}(T)$ in the normal state that broadens and shifts to temperatures well above $T_c$ with decreasing doping. We show that a model of preformed pairs-bipolarons provides a selfconsistent quantitative description of $R_{H}(T)$ together with in-plane resistivity and uniform magnetic susceptibility for a wide range of doping.
By using mutual flux-attaching singular gauge transformations, we derive an effective action describing the zero temperature quantum phase transition from d-wave superconductor to underdoped regime. In this effective action, quantum fluctuation generated vortices couple to quasi-particles by a mutual statistical interaction with statistical angle θ, the vortices are also interacting with each other by long range interactions due to charge fluctuation. Neglecting the charge fluctuation, we find a fixed line characterized by θand calculate the universal spinon, vortex and mutual Hall drag conduc…
Motivated by recent experimental measurements on the Fermi surface(FS) destruction in underdoped high-$T_{c}$ cuprates, we examine its effect on the transport properties based on the Boltzmann equation approach. The effect is modeled by simply taking the density of states for electrons in the gapped regions to be zero. Within the nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquid model, we calculate the temperature dependences of the dc resistivity, the inverse Hall angle and the Hall coefficient. It is shown that the effect of the FS destruction on transport properties is sensitive to the existance and th…
The temperature dependences of the Hall-Lorenz numbers (Lxy) in a EuBa2Cu3Oy (Eu-123) single crystal before and after oxygen reduction are reported. The study is based on data on the normal state longitudinal and transversal transport coefficients. Namely, the temperature dependences of the electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, longitudinal thermal conductivity, and transverse thermal conductivity are presented. The set of measurements was performed for an optimally doped sample (y = 7), then the oxygen content in the the same crystal was reduced to y = 6.65, and the measurements were repe…
We present magneto-transport measurements performed on underdoped PCCO at THz frequencies as a function of temperature and doping. A rapidly decreasing Hall mass is observed as the doping is reduced consistent with the formation of small electron Fermi pockets. However, both dc and infrared (IR) magneto-transport data strongly deviate from the predictions of transport theory in the relaxation time approximation (RTA) based on angular resolved photoemission data. The Hall mass is observed to increase continuously with increasing temperature with no signature at the Neel temperature. In the para…
We show that the unusual doping dependence of the isotope effects on transition temperature and zero temperature in - plane penetration depth naturally follows from the doping driven 3D-2D crossover, the 2D quantum superconductor to insulator transition (QSI) in the underdoped limit and the change of the relative doping concentration upon isotope substitution. Close to the QSI transition both, the isotope coefficient of transition temperature and penetration depth approach the coefficient of the relative dopant concentration, and its divergence sets the scale. These predictions are fully consi…
The quantum oscillation data from a whole variety of underdoped HTSC systems and physical measurements has almost universally been presented in very classical terms following the Lifshitz-Kosevich formulation for Fermi-Landau quasiparticles, quantized into vortices and Landau levels under the high applied magnetic fields. The Fermi surface always emerges as a very small fraction of the large parent Fermi surface detected at higher doping. This then calls for some Fermi surface reconstruction to have occurred, as from a charged density wave, etc.. The paper refutes this reciprocal space approac…
We address recent experiments shedding light on the energy spectrum of under- and optimally doped cuprates at temperatures above superconducting transition. Angle resolved photoemission reveals coherent excitation only near nodal points on parts of the "bare" Fermi surface known as the Fermi arcs. The question debated in the literature is whether the small normal pocket, seen via quantum oscillations exists at higher temperatures or forms below a charge order transition in strong magnetic fields. Assuming the former case as possibility, expressions derived for the resistivity and the Hall coef…

Charge density-wave order has been observed in cuprate superconductors whose crystal structure breaks the square symmetry of the CuO2 planes, such as orthorhombic YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO), but not so far in cuprates that preserve that symmetry, such as tetragonal HgBa2CuO4+d (Hg1201). We have measured the Hall (R_H), Seebeck (S), and Nernst coefficients of underdoped Hg1201 in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The high-field R_H(T) and S(T) are found to drop with decreasing temperature and become negative, as also observed in YBCO at comparable doping. In YBCO, the negative R…
A new method is presented for measuring terms in the elastoresistivity tensor $m_{ij}$ of single crystal samples with tetragonal symmetry. The technique is applied to a representative underdoped Fe-arsenide, Ba(Fe$_{0.975}$Co$_{0.025}$)$_2$As$_2$, revealing an anomalously large and anisotropic elastoresistance in comparison to simple metals. The $m_{66}$ coefficient follows a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence, providing direct evidence that the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition that occurs at $T_s$ = 97.5 K in this material is not the result of a true-proper ferro-elastic…
Hall coefficient $R_H$ and thermoelectric power TEP are studied systematically in the single crystals $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+δ}$ (NCCO) with different x from underdoped to overdoped regime. With increasing doping level, both $R_H$ and TEP decrease and change their sign from negative to positive. A striking feature is that the temperature dependence of the Hall angle follows a $T^4$ behavior in the underdoped regime, while a $T^2$ in the overdoped regime. These behaviors are closely related to the evolution of Fermi surface with doping level observed by ARPES.
The recent detection of charge-density modulations in YBa2Cu3Oy and other cuprate superconductors raises new questions about the normal state of underdoped cuprates. In one class of theories, the modulations are intertwined with pairing in a dual state, expected to persist up to high magnetic fields as a vortex liquid. In support of such a state, specific heat and magnetisation data on YBa2Cu3Oy have been interpreted in terms of a vortex liquid persisting above the vortex-melting field Hvs at T = 0. Here we report high-field measurements of the electrical and thermal Hall conductivities in YBa…
On the basis of negative transport coefficients, it has been argued that the quantum oscillations observed in underdoped YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) in high magnetic fields must be due to antinodal electron pockets. We point out a counter example in which electron-like transport in a hole-doped cuprate is associated with Fermi-arc states. We also present evidence that the antinodal gap in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+x) is robust to modest applied magnetic fields. We suggest that these observations should be taken into account when interpreting the results of the quantum oscillation experiments.
The isotope coefficient $β$ of the magnetic penetration depth in the superconducting state is studied at T=0 for a $d$-CDW and a nodal metal model. Disregarding superconductivity the Fermi surface of the first model possesses arcs whereas the second model has no arcs. We show that a large increase of $β$ in the pseudogap region is generically incompatible with Fermi arcs in the pseudogap state. Thus only the second model shows a large increase of $β$ with decreasing doping. The required electron-phonon coupling is small and compatible with first-principles calculations based on the local densi…
The magnetic-field dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity of the electron-doped compounds $Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_{4+δ}$ in underdoped region (x=0.14) were investigated. It was established experimentally a strong magnetic field dependence of the Hall conductivity, $σ_{xy}(B)=C-b/B$, in the region of magnetic fields corresponding to a transition from superconducting to resistive state. The observed feature can be explained with the sum of contributions of the quasiparticles and moving Abrikosov vortices into Hall effect in a mixed state of type-II superconductor.
We present a study of Nernst effect in underdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in magnetic fields as high as 28T. At high fields, a sizeable Nernst signal was found to persist in presence of a field-induced non-metallic resistivity. By simultaneously measuring resistivity and the Nernst coefficient, we extract the entropy of vortex cores in the vicinity of this field-induced superconductor-insulator transition. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the thermo-electric Hall angle provides strong constraints on the possible origins of the finite Nernst signal above $T_c$, as recently discovered by Xu e…
Recent experiments strongly suggest that a Fermi surface reconstruction and multiple Fermi pockets are important common features of the underdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors. A related theoretical work [Phys. Rev. B 79, 134512 (2009)] has demonstrated that a number of hallmark phenomena observed in the underdoped cuprates appear naturally in the scenario of a paired electron pocket co-existing with unpaired hole pockets. We propose Gutzwiller-projected wave-functions to describe this two-fluid state as well as two competing states in its vicinity. It is argued that a pseudogap st…
Fluctuation effects in underdoped cuprates under high fields are examined by trying to fit theoretical results to resistivity and Nernst data in vortex states. The superconducting (SC) fluctuation in underdoped cuprates includes not only the ordinary thermal contribution but also a large amount of quantum dynamical contributions. Together with this, the presence of a SC pseudogap region T_0-T_{c0} increasing with underdoping is found to be the origin of the Nernst coefficient becoming anomalously smaller and the in-plane coherence length {\it apparently} increasing with underdoping.
We report the doping evolution of magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ and Hall coefficient $R_H$ in high quality Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.13 \leq x \leq 1$) single crystals. It is found that the normal-state magnetic susceptibility of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ compounds undergoes a crossover from linear-$T$ dependence in the undoped and underdoped samples into KFe$_2$As$_2$-type magnetic response in the overdoped samples with increasing K content. Hall coefficient $R_H$ of underdoped sample $x$=0.22 shows a rapid increase above spin-density-wave transition temperature $T_{SDW}$. Below $T_{…
We report magnetoresistance measurements of ramp type superconductor-normal-superconductor (SNS) junctions. The junctions consist of underdoped $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ (YBCO) electrodes separated by a barrier of $YBa_{2}Cu_{2.6}Ga_{0.4}O_y$. We observe a large positive magnetoresistance, linear in the field. We suggest that this unusual magnetoresistance originates in the field dependence of the proximity effect. Our results indicate that in underdoped YBCO/N/YBCO SNS structures, the proximity effect does not exhibit the anomalously long range found in optimally doped YBCO structures. From our data…
Transport properties are studied for the flux state with the gauge flux $ϕ$ per plaquett, which may model the underdoped cuprates, with the emphasis on the particle-hole and parity/chiral symmetries. This model is reduced to the Dirac fermions in (2+1)D with a mass gap introduced by the antiferromagnetic (AF) long range order and/or the stripe formation. Without the mass gap, the Hall constant $R_H$ and the thermopower $S$ obey two-parameter scaling laws, and show the strong temperature dependence due to the recovery of the particle-hole symmetry at high temperature. The $x$-dependences of $σ_{…
The electrical resistivity rho_c of the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBCO was measured perpendicular to the CuO_2 planes on ultra-high quality single crystals in magnetic fields large enough to suppress superconductivity. The incoherent insulating-like behavior of rho_c at high temperature, characteristic of all underdoped cuprates, is found to cross over to a coherent regime of metallic behavior at low temperature. This crossover coincides with the emergence of the small electron pocket detected in the Fermi surface of YBCO via quantum oscillations, the Hall and Seebeck coefficients and …
Several models of the electronic spectrum in the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprates have been proposed to explain ARPES and STM measurements, which reveal only truncated Fermi pockets instead of a full metallic Fermi surface. We consider the transport properties expected of four physically distinct models, and calculate the thermal and electrical conductivity of the electronic quasiparticles. By proposing transport currents that reflect the close correspondence between quasiparticles on the Fermi pockets in the pseudogap and those near nodes in the superconducting state, we show that measu…
In-plane resistivity ρ_{ab}, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance (MR) are measured in a series of high-quality Bi_{2}Sr_{2-x}La_{x}CuO_{6} crystals with various carrier concentrations, from underdope to overdope. Our crystals show the highest T_c (33 K) and the smallest residual resistivity ever reported for Bi-2201 at optimum doping. It is found that the temperature dependence of the Hall angle obeys a power law T^n with n systematically decreasing with increasing doping, which questions the universality of the Fermi-liquid-like T^2 dependence of the "Hall scattering rate". In particular,…
We study 2+1 dimensional massless Dirac fermions and bosons coupled to a U(1) gauge field as a model for underdoped cuprates. We find that the uniform susceptibility and the specific heat coefficient are logarithmically enhanced (compared to linear-in-T behavior) due to the fluctuation of transverse gauge field which is the only massless mode at finite boson density. We analyze existing data, and find good agreement in the spin gap phase. Within our picture, the drop of the susceptibility below the superconducting T_c arises from the suppression of gauge fluctuations.
The in-plane resistivity and Hall coefficient have been measured for the single-layer compound Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ for the whole range of doping states. The deviation of the Hall coefficient, $R_H$, from a high-temperature linear behavior and the temperature dependence of the Hall angle are both only weakly dependent upon doping, contrasting with Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCuO$_{8+δ}$. This is in contradiction with former proposals that the transverse transport detects the formation of incoherent Cooper pairs in the pseudogap state. Conversely, the analysis of the …
We report magnetoresistivity measurements on strongly underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.25, 6.36) single crystals in applied magnetic fields H || c-axis. We identify two different contributions to both in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistivities. The first contribution has the same sign as the temperature coefficient of the resistivity \partial ln(ρ_i)/\partial T (i={c,ab}). This contribution reflects the incoherent nature of the out-of-plane transport. The second contribution is positive, quadratic in field, with an onset temperature that correlates to the antiferromagnetic ordering.
The Fermi-liquid-like (FL) resistivity recently observed in clean HgBa2CuO4 below the pseudogap temperature was related to carriers at the nodal points on the Fermi surface [4]. We show that this necessitates important implications for the electronic spectrum of underdoped (UD) cuprates in whole. Photoemission experiments picture the spectrum as of metallic arcs separated from each other by regions with large energy gaps. We solved the kinetic equation in such model rigorously. The Fermi arcs carriers contribute to FL resistivity, if scattering between the opposite nodal points admits the Umkl…
We investigated the anisotropy in the in-plane optical spectra of detwinned Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The optical conductivity spectrum of BaFe2As2 shows appreciable anisotropy in the magnetostructural ordered phase, whereas the dc resistivity is almost isotropic at low temperatures. Upon Co doping, the resistivity becomes highly anisotropic, while the finite-energy intrinsic anisotropy is suppressed. It is found that anisotropy in resistivity arises from anisotropic impurity scattering from doped Co atoms, extrinsic in origin. Intensity of a specific optical phonon mode is also found to show striking…
We investigate the electron-boson spectral density function, $I^2χ(ω,T)$, of CuO$_2$ plane in underdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212) and underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ (Y-123) using the Eliashberg formalism. We apply a new (in-plane) pseudogap model to extract the electron-boson spectral function. For extracting the spectral function we assume that the spectral density function consists of two components: a sharp mode and the broad Millis-Monien-Pines (MMP) mode. We observe that both the resulting spectral density function and the intensity of the pseudogap show strong temperat…
The electrical resistivity (Rxx) and Hall resistivity (Rxy) of LaFeAsO1-xFx have been measured over a wide fluorine doping range 0 =< x =< 0.14 using 60 T pulsed magnets. While the superconducting phase diagram (Tc, x) displays the classic dome-shaped structure, we find that the resistive upper critical field (Hc2) increases monotonically with decreasing fluorine concentration, with the largest Hc2 >= 75 T for x = 0.05. This is reminiscent of the composition dependence in high-Tc cuprates and might correlate with opening of a pseudo-gap in the underdoped region. Further, the temperature depend…
We have measured the magnetic field and temperature dependence of specific heat on $Bi_2Sr_{2-x}La_xCuO_{6+δ}$ single crystals in wide doping and temperature regions. The superconductivity related specific heat coefficient $γ_{sc}$ and entropy $S_{sc}$ are determined. It is found that $γ_{sc}$ has a hump-like anomaly at $T_c$ and behaves as a long tail which persists far into the normal state for the underdoped samples, but for the heavily overdoped samples the anomaly ends sharply just near $T_c$. Interestingly, we found that the entropy associated with superconductivity is roughly conserved …
The resistivity tensor correlations $ρ_{xy}$($B$)$\sim$ $[ρ_{xx}(B)]^β$ for the mixed state magnetic field dependencies of the resistivity tensor of electron-doped Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4+δ}$/SrTiO$_3$ single crystal films near the antiferromagnetic (AF) - superconducting (SC) phase transition and with varying degree of disorder ($δ$) were studied. The decrease of $β$ from 1.2$\pm$0.2 at $x$ = 0.14 to 0.6$\pm$0.1 at $x$ = 0.15 points out on the evidence of the change from the anisotropic $s$ - wave to the $d$ - wave pairing symmetry in the external magnetic field at the transition from underdo…
Our knowledge of the ground state of underdoped hole-doped cuprates has evolved considerably over the last few years. There is now compelling evidence that inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstructed Fermi surface made of small pockets. Quantum oscillations, [Doiron-Leyraud N, et al. (2007) Nature 447:564-568], optical conductivity [Mirzaei SI, et al. (2013) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 110:5774-5778] and the validity of Wiedemann-Franz law [Grissonnache G, et al. (2016) Phys. Rev. B 93:064513] point to a Fermi liquid regime at low temperature in…
he relationship between photoemission spectra of high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ cuprates and their thermodynamic and transport properties are discussed. The doping dependence of the expected quasi-particle density at the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) are compared with the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ$ and that of the spectral weight at $E_\mathrm{F}$ with the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density. We have estimated the electrical resistivity of underdoped cuprates from the momentum distribution curve (MDC) at $E_\mathrm{F}$ in the nodal direction. The temperature dependence of the MDC …
The Hall coefficient in the low-temperature tetragonal phase and the mid-temperature orthorhombic phase of La$_{1.88-y}$Y$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y=0, 0.04$) single crystals is measured under high magnetic fields up to 9 T in order to investigate the detailed behavior of the transport properties at low temperatures in the stripe phase. When the superconductivity is suppressed by high magnetic fields, the Hall coefficient has negative values in low temperatures, and the temperature region of the negative values spreads as increasing magnetic fields. This result indicates that the Hall coefficie…
We examine the normal-state temperature and doping dependence of the Hall coefficient in the context of a pair-fluctuation scenario, based on a model where itinerant electrons are hybridized with localized electron pairs via a charge exchange term. We show that an anomalous behavior of the Hall effect, qualitatively similar to that observed in high-Tc superconductors, can be attributed to the non-Fermi liquid properties of the single-particle spectral function which exhibits pseudogap features. Our calculations are based on a dynamical mean-field procedure which relates the transport coefficie…
We argue that charges in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ move in a dissipative environment of strong spatial and temporal fluctuations. The unusual temperature dependence of the Hall angle known as "the separation of lifetimes" is reinterpreted and attributed to the appearance of the thermally activated component in the effective number of carriers with the temperature increase. We consider the temperature interval above $T_{c}$ where localization effects can be neglected.
We adapt the Boson-Fermion superconductivity model to include layered systems such as underdoped cuprate superconductors. These systems are represented by an infinite layered structure containing a mixture of paired and unpaired fermions. The former, which stand for the superconducting carriers, are considered as noninteracting zero spin composite-bosons with a linear energy-momentum dispersion relation in the CuO$_2$ planes where superconduction is predominant, coexisting with the unpaired fermions in a pattern of stacked slabs. The inter-slab, penetrable, infinite planes are generated by a D…
Pressure-induced superconductivity and its relation to corresponding Hall coefficient (RH) have been reported for Bi2Te3, one of known topological insulators. A full phase diagram is presented which shows a complex dependence of the superconducting transition temperature as a function of pressure over an extensive range. High-pressure RH measurements reveal a close relation of these complex behaviors, particularly, a dramatic change of dRH/dP before structural phase transition and a pressure-induced crossover on RH in the high pressure phase were observed.
We investigated the in-plane transport properties of the Fe-based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with a wide composition range $0 \leq x \leq 0.55$. We show that the doping dependence of the Hall coefficient is well-described by the Boltzmann equation for a two-band system with a rigid-band approximation. We successfully deduced transport parameters, which suggested that holes with heavier mass conduct more smoothly than electrons. Moreover, the temperature variation of the Hall coefficient indicated that an anomalous coherent state characterized by heavy quasiparticles in ho…
We have measured the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the Hall coefficient ($R_{\rm H}$) in three, several micrometer long multigraphene samples of thickness between $\sim 9~$to $\sim 30$~nm in the temperature range 0.1 to 200~K and up to 0.2~T field. The temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance of two of the samples indicates the contribution from embedded interfaces running parallel to the graphene layers. At low enough temperatures and fields $R_{\rm H}$ is positive in all samples, showing a crossover to negative values at high enough fields and/or temperatures in s…
Through the measurements of magnetic field dependence of specific heat in $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ in zero temperature limit, we find that the nodal slope $v_Δ$ of the superconducting gap has a very similar doping dependence of the pseudogap temperature $T^*$ or value $Δ_p$. Meanwhile the maximum quasiparticle gap derived from $v_Δ$ is quite close to $T^*$. Both indicate a close relationship between the pseudogap and superconductivity. It is also found that $T_c \approx βv_Δγ_n(0)$, where $γ_n(0)$ is the extracted zero temperature value of the normal state specific heat coefficient which is proport…
We present magnetotransport studies of the parent, an underdoped and an optimally doped composition of the Ba(Fe${_{1-x}}$Co${_{x}}$)${_{2}}$As${_{2}}$ series. We observe that both the Kohler's and modified Kohler's scaling is typically violated in both the magnetically ordered and paramagnetic regimes. A notable exception is the magnetically ordered state of the underdoped composition where the modified Kohler's scaling is observed, indicating its relative similarity to the cuprates and some heavy fermion systems. This composition also exhibits a feature in the Hall angle, which could signify…
We report a systematic study of normal state Nernst effect in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ over a wide range of doping (0.05$\leq x \leq$0.21) and temperature. At low temperatures, we observed a notable vortex Nernst signal above T$_c$ in the underdoped films, but no such normal state vortex Nernst signal is found in the overdoped region. The superconducting fluctuations in the underdoped region are most likely incoherent phase fluctuations as found in hole-doped cuprates. At high temperatures, a large normal state Nernst signal is found at dopings from slightly unde…
In the normal state of high-Tc cuprates, the Hall coefficient shows remarkable temperature dependence, and its absolute value is enhanced in comparison with that value simply estimated on the basis of band structure. It has been recognized that this temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient is due to highly anisotropic quasiparticle damping rate on the Fermi surface. In this paper we further take account of the vertex correction to the current vertex arising from quasiparticle interactions. Then the transport current is transformed to a large extent from the quasiparticle velocity, and is…
In-plane resistivity, magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements have been conducted on quenched K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$ single crystals in order to analysis the normal-state transport properties. It is found that the Kohler's rule is well obeyed below about 80 K, but clearly violated above 80 K. Measurements of the Hall coefficient reveal a strong but non-monotonic temperature dependence with a maximum at about 80 K, in contrast to any other FeAs-based superconductors. With the two-band model analysis on the Hall coefficient, we conclude that a gap may open below 65 K. The data above 65 K a…
The Hall coefficient (R_H) is investigated along the in-plane direction for carefully prepared La_2-x_Sr_x_CuO_4_ thin films from x=0.08 to x=0.40. It is found that R_H becomes almost temperature independent around room temperature for x >= 0.24, and its sign smoothly changes from positive to negative between x = 0.28 and 0.32, showing contrasting behavior to previously reported results. This result indicates that the carrier can be doped smoothly across the hole- to electron-dominant regions. According to the sign change of R_H, superconductivity disappears for x >= 0.32 films, which suggests…
In underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_x (x=6.63), the low-T thermal conductivity Kappa_xx varies steeply with field B at small B, and saturates to a nearly field-independent value at high fields. The simple expression [1+p(T)|B|]^(-1) provides an excellent fit to Kappa_xx(B) over a wide range of fields. From the fit, we extract the zero-field mean-free-path, and the low temperature behavior of the QP current. The procedure also allows the QP Hall angle Theta_QP to be obtained. We find that Theta_QP falls on the 1/T^2 curve extrapolated from the electrical Hall angle above Tc. Moreover, it shares the same T…
We measured the thermopower S and the Hall coefficients R_H of Bi_{2}Sr_{2-z}La_{z}CuO_{6+δ} (BSLCO) single crystals in a wide doping range, in an effort to identify the actual hole concentrations per Cu, p, in this system. It is found that the "universal" relation between the room-temperature thermopower and T_c does not hold in the BSLCO system. Instead, comparison of the temperature-dependent R_H data with other cuprate systems is used as a tool to identify the actual p value. To justify this approach, we compare normalized R_H(T) data of BSLCO, La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (LSCO), YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_…
We report on muon spin rotation measurements of the internal magnetic field distribution n(B) in the vortex solid phase of YBa2Cu3Oy (YBCO) single crystals, from which we have simultaneously determined the hole doping dependences of the in-plane Ginzburg-Landau (GL) length scales in the underdoped regime. We find that Tc has a sublinear dependence on 1/lambda_{ab}^2, where lambda_{ab} is the in-plane magnetic penetration depth in the extrapolated limits T -> 0 and H -> 0. The power coefficient of the sublinear dependence is close to that determined in severely underdoped YBCO thin films, indic…
Low-temperature specific heat (SH) is measured on Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals in a wide doping region under different magnetic fields. For the overdoped sample, we find the clear evidence for the presence of $T^2$ term in the data, which is absent both for the underdoped and optimal doped samples, suggesting the presence of line nodes in the energy gap of the overdoped samples. Moreover, the field induced electron specific heat coefficient $Δγ(H)$ increases more quickly with the field for the overdoped sample than the underdoped and optimal doped ones, giving another suppo…
We comment on the recent work [N. Harrison, \textit{et al.} Phys. Rev. B {\bf 92}, 224505 (2015)] which attempts to explain the sign reversal and quantum oscillations of the Hall coefficient observed in cuprates from a single nodal diamond-shaped electron pocket with concave arc segments. Given the importance of this work, it calls for a closer scrutiny. Their conclusion of sign reversal of the Hall coefficient depends on a non-generic rounding of the sharp vertices. Moreover, their demonstration of quantum oscillation in the Hall coefficient from a single pocket is unconvincing. We maintain t…
The Hall coefficient is related to the effective carrier density and Fermi surface topology in noninteracting and weakly interacting systems. In strongly correlated systems, the relation between the Hall coefficient and single-particle properties is less clear. Clarifying this relation would give insight into the nature of transport in strongly correlated materials that lack well-formed quasiparticles. In this work, we investigate the DC Hall coefficient of the Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo in conjunction with a recently developed expansion of magneto-transport coefficien…
