We have experimentally found related anomalies in electrical resistivity, dc and ac magnetic susceptibility, appearing deeply within ferromagnetically ordered state in SrRuO3. Lack of Jahn-Teller distortion in this regime rules out conventional orbital order, forcing one to describe these in terms of an orbital liquid ground state coexisting with ferromagnetic spin order. We suggest that weak spin-orbit coupling in such an unusual state underpins the observed anomalies.
In this work, we report the structural, magnetic and electrical and thermal transport properties of the Heusler-type alloy Ru2NbAl. From the detailed analysis of magnetization data, we infer the presence of superparamagnetically interacting clusters with a Pauli paramagnetic background, while short-range ferromagnetic interaction is developed among the clusters below 5 K. The presence of this ferromagnetic interaction is confirmed through heat capacity measurements. The relatively small value of electronic contribution to specific heat, gamma (~2.7 mJ/mol-K2), as well as the linear nature of t…
We study a ferromagnetic instability in a doped single-band Hubbard model by means of dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Examining the effect of the strong correlations in the system on the hypercubic and Bethe lattice, we find that the ferromagnetically ordered state appears in the former, while it does not in the latter. We also reveal that the ferromagnetic order is more stable in the case that the noninteracting DOS exhibits a slower decay in the high-energy region. The present results suggest that, in the strong-coupling regime, the high-…
We present a detailed study of the field-dependent specific heat of the bimetallic ferromagnetically coupled chain compound MnNi(NO$_2$)$_4$(en)$_2$, en = ethylenediamine. For this material, which in zero field orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N=2.45$ K, small fields suppress magnetic order. Instead, in such fields a double-peak like structure in the temperature dependence of the specific heat is observed. We attribute this behavior to the existence of an acoustic and an optical mode in the spin wave dispersion as result of the existence of two different spins per unit cell. We compare ou…
We investigate the spin-ordered states in multilayer massless Dirac fermion systems under magnetic fields, in which the intralayer interaction is ferromagnetic owing to the exchange interaction, while the interlayer interaction is antiferromagnetic arising from the interlayer hopping and the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The possible spin-ordered states are examined within the mean field theory, and we apply it to alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3, which is a multilayer massless Dirac fermion system under pressure. In the weak interlayer coupling regime the system exhibits a ferromagnetically spin-ordered stat…
Ordered spin-ice state in the geometrically frustrated metallic-ferromagnet Sm2Mo2O7
A recent study [Tassel {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 167205 (2010)] has proposed a remarkable spin model for (CuCl)LaNb2O7, in which dimers are ferromagnetically coupled to each other on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice. In this model, the intra-dimer exchange coupling J>0 is antiferromagnetic, while the inter-dimer exchange couplings are ferromagnetic and take different values, J_x,J_y<0, in the two bond directions. Anticipating that the highly frustrated character of this model may lead to a wide range of behaviors in (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds, we theoretically …
Li$_2$Sr[MnN]$_2$ single crystals were successfully grown out of Li rich flux. The crystal structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and revealed almost linear $-$N$-$Mn$-$N$-$Mn$-$ chains as central structural motif. Tetragonal columns of this air and moisture sensitive nitridomanganate were employed for electrical transport, heat capacity, and anisotropic magnetization measurements. Both the electronic and magnetic properties are most remarkable, in particular the linear increase of the magnetic susceptibility with temperature that is reminiscent of underdoped cuprate and …
We study low temperature properties of the Hubbard model for the bismuth nickelate, where degenerate orbitals in the nickel ions and a single orbital in the bismuth ions are taken into account, combining dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. We discuss the effect of the attractive interactions to mimic the valence skipping phenomenon in the bismuth ions. We demonstrate how the charge and magnetically ordered states are stable against thermal fluctuations. It is furthermore clarified that the ferromagnetically ordered and orbital ordered states are sta…
Epitaxial strain imposed in complex oxide thin films by heteroepitaxy is recognized as a powerful tool for identifying new properties and exploring the vast potential of materials performance. A particular example is LaCoO3, a zero spin, nonmagnetic material in the bulk, whose strong ferromagnetism in a thin film remains enigmatic despite a decade of intense research. Here, we use scanning transmission electron microscopy complemented by X-ray and optical spectroscopy to study LaCoO3 epitaxial thin films under different strain states. We observed an unconventional strain relaxation behavior re…
We employ the Gutzwiller variational approach to investigate the interplay of Coulomb interaction and spin-orbit coupling in a three-orbital Hubbard model. Already in the paramagnetic phase we find a substantial renormalization of the spin-orbit coupling that enters the effective single-particle Hamiltonian for the quasi-particles. Only close to half band-filling and for sizable Coulomb interaction we observe clear signatures of Hund's atomic rules for spin, orbital, and total angular momentum. For a finite local Hund's-rule exchange interaction we find a ferromagnetically ordered state. The s…
While CaFeO$_3$ exhibits upon cooling a metal-insulator transition linked to charge ordering, SrFeO$_3$ and BaFeO$_3$ keep metallic behaviors down to very low temperatures. Moreover, alkaline-earth ferrites do not seem prone to orbital ordering in spite of the d$^4$ formal occupancy of Fe$^{4+}$. Here, from first-principles simulations, we show that the metal-insulator transition of CaFeO$_3$ is structurally triggered by oxygen rotation motions as in rare-earth nickelates. This not only further clarifies why SrFeO$_3$ and BaFeO$_3$ remain metallic but allows us to predict that an insulating ch…
Inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed on single crystals of Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ with x$\approx$0.5. Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in the manganites arises from the interplay between a ferromagnetic metallic and antiferromagnetic charge and orbital ordered insulating state. Therefore, it appears important to compare these phases concerning their underlying magnetic interaction parameters. Our investigations of the spin-wave disperion in the AFM ordered state of Nd$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ exhibits a strongly anisotropic stiffness. The sign of the anisotropy i…
We studied the charge-orbital ordering in the superlattice of charge-ordered insulating Pr$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ and ferromagnetic metallic La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ by resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A temperature-dependent incommensurability is found in the orbital order. In addition, a large hysteresis is observed that is caused by phase competition between insulating charge ordered and metallic ferromagnetic states. No magnetic phase transitions are observed in contrast to bulk, confirming the unique character of the superlattice. The deviation from the commensurate orbital order can…
CuMoO4 is a triclinic quantum magnet based on S = 1/2 moments at the Cu2+ site. It has recently attracted interest due to the remarkable changes in its chromic and volumetric properties at high temperatures, and in its magnetic properties at low temperatures. This material exhibits a first order structural phase transition at T_C ~ 190 K as well as a magnetic phase transition at T_N ~ 1.75 K. We report low temperature heat capacity measurements as well as extensive elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on powder samples taken above and below T_N. We observe neutron diffraction …
We report on Raman scattering measurements of the A-site ordered YBaMn2O6 in the wide temperature range of 10-650K. Upon cooling almost all phonon modes show pronounced temperature dependencies of frequency, linewidth, and scattering intensity. This suggests that the octahedra tilting, Mn-O bond angles and lengths vary with temperature in a concerted way. The remarkable feature is that the high-temperature metallic and the charge and orbital ordered (CO-OO) states coexist down to T_N=195K. In the antiferromagnetic state zone-folded modes are induced by the CO-OO superstructure and the phonon m…
Using ab initio calculations, we have investigated a cubic perovskite BaOsO3 and a few related compounds that have been synthesized recently and formally have a metallic d^4 configuration. In BaOsO3, which shows obvious 3-dimensional fermiology, a nonmagnetism is induced by a large spin-orbit coupling (SOC), which is precisely equal to an exchange splitting ~0.4 eV of the $t_{2g}$ manifold. However, the inclusion of on-site Coulomb repulsion as small as $U^c$~1.2 eV, only 1/3 of the $t_{2g}$ bandwidth, leads to the emergence of a spin-ordered moment, indicating that this system is on the verge…
We study FeO, a Mott insulator in GGA and GGA+U approximations. In the GGA we find a multi-band metallic state with remarkable inter-band nesting between two $t_{2g}$ bands of Fermi surface, which signals possible instability towards an orbital ordered insulating phase. Such broken symmetry state, although has lower energy than the underlying homogeneous metallic state, but the gap magnitude is less than the experimentally observed optical gap. Therefore we incorporate the calculated value of on-site Coulomb repulsion U on orbital ordered state. We find that symmetry breaking and Coulomb corre…
We analyze the magnetically ordered phases in the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice around quarter filling using the dynamical mean field theory. We find that close to quarter filling besides the paramagnetic phase, at least three magnetic phases compete. These phases are a ferromagnetic state, a partial Kondo screened state, which is a combination of charge order and magnetic order, and a striped magnetic phase, which is ferromagnetically ordered in one direction and antiferromagnetically in the other direction. We analyze the spectral properties of these states and show that the PKS st…
We report formation of magnetic textures in the ferromagnetic (FM) phase of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ for $x =$ 0.125; these textures are magnetic bubbles, magnetic stripe domains, and forced FM states. In situ Lorentz microscopy (LM) observations show that magnetic bubbles exist in the FM insulating phase accompanying the formation of the charge$/$orbital ordering (CO$/$OO). Furthermore, stable magnetic bubbles still exist in an intermediate temperature region between the CO$/$OO ($T_{CO} =$ 155 K) and FM ($T_c =$ 190 K) transition temperatures. These magnetic bubbles are believed to originate …
We report on high-temperature electron spin resonance studies of A-site ordered YBaMn2O6 and disordered Y0.5Ba0.5MnO3. In the disordered sample we find that the linewidth is governed by spin-spin relaxation processes as in many other manganite systems. In contrast we find a Korringa-like spin relaxation with a slope of about 1 Oe/K above the charge-ordering transition and extending up to 930K in the metal ordered YBaMn2O6 samples. A Korringa-law is a clear feature of a truly metallic state, pointing to an unconventional high-temperature phase of these ordered manganites. In agreement with the …
We have grown single crystals of YbFe6Ge6 and LuFe6Ge6 and characterized their anisotropic behaviour through low field magnetic susceptibility, field-dependent magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity measurements. The Yb+3 valency is confirmed by LIII XANES measurements. YbFe6Ge6 crystals exhibit a field-dependent, sudden reorientation of the Fe spins at about 63 K, a unique effect in the RFe6Ge6 family (R = rare earths) where the Fe ions order anti-ferromagnetically with Neel temperatures above 450 K and the R ions' magnetism appears to behave independently. The possible origins of this …
The mineral haydeeite, alpha-MgCu3(OD)6Cl2, is a S=1/2 kagome ferromagnet that displays long-range magnetic order below TC=4.2 K with a strongly reduced moment. Our inelastic neutron scattering data show clear spin-wave excitations that are well described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange J1=-38 K and antiferromagnetic exchange Jd=+11 K across the hexagons of the kagome lattice. These values place haydeeite very close to the quantum phase transition between ferromagnetic order and non-coplanar twelve-sublattice cuboc2 antiferromagnetic order. Diffuse dyna…
An ordered phase showing remarkable electronic anisotropy in proximity to the superconducting phase is now a hot issue in the field of high-transition-temperature superconductivity. As in the case of copper oxides, superconductivity in iron arsenides competes or coexists with such an ordered phase. Undoped and underdoped iron arsenides have a magnetostructural ordered phase exhibiting stripe-like antiferromagnetic spin order accompanied by an orthorhombic lattice distortion; both the spin order and lattice distortion break the tetragonal symmetry of crystals of these compounds. In this ordered…
Magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution x-ray diffraction and magnetic field-dependent neutron diffraction measurements reveal a novel magnetic ground state of Ba{0.60}K{0.40}Mn2As2 in which itinerant ferromagnetism (FM) below a Curie temperature TC = 100 K arising from the doped conduction holes coexists with collinear antiferromagnetism (AFM) of the Mn local moments that order below a Neel temperature TN = 480 K. The FM ordered moments are aligned in the tetragonal ab-plane and are orthogonal to the AFM-ordered Mn moments that are aligned along the c-axis. The magnitude an…

Using a first-principles approach based on density functional theory and dynamical mean field theory, we study the electronic properties of a new candidate polar metal SrEuMo$_2$O$_6$. Its electronic structure shares similarities with centrosymmetric SrMoO$_3$ and EuMoO$_3$, from which it may be considered an ordered derivative, but ferroelectric-like distortions of the divalent cations and oxygen anions lift inversion symmetry mediated by an anharmonic lattice interaction in the metallic state. We find that Hund's coupling promotes the effects of electronic correlations owing to the Mo$^{4+}$…
We have investigated the orbital states of the orbital-glassy (short-range orbital ordered) spinel vanadate Co$_{1.21}$V$_{1.79}$O$_{4}$ using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and subsequent configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation. From the sign of the XMCD spectra, it was found that the spin magnetic moment of the Co ion is aligned parallel to the applied magnetic field and that of the V ion anti-parallel to it, consistent with neutron scattering studies. It was revealed that the excess Co ions at the octahedral site take the trivalent…
We investigate the influence of itinerant carriers on dynamics and fluctuation of local moments in Fe-based superconductors, via linear spin-wave analysis of a spin-fermion model containing both itinerant and local degrees of freedom. Surprisingly against the common lore, instead of enhancing the ($π$,0) order, itinerant carriers with well nested Fermi surfaces is found to induce significant amount of \textit{spatial} and temporal quantum fluctuation that leads to the observed small ordered moment. Interestingly, the underlying mechanism is shown to be intra-pocket nesting-associated long-rang…
