We utilize the local velocity dispersion function (VDF) of spheroids, together with their inferred age--distributions, to predict the VDF at higher redshifts (0<z<6), under the assumption that (i) most of the stars in each nearby spheroid formed in a single episode, and (ii) the velocity dispersion sigma remained nearly constant afterward. We assume further that a supermassive black hole (BH) forms concurrently with the stars, and within ~1 Gyr of the formation of the potential well of the spheroid, and that the relation between the mass of the BH and host velocity dispersion maintains the form M_BH ~ sigma^{beta} with beta~4, but with the normalization allowed to evolve with redshift as ~(1+z)^{alpha}. We compute the BH mass function associated with the VDF at each redshift, and compare the accumulated total BH mass density with that inferred from the integrated quasar luminosity function (LF; the so--called Soltan argument). This comparison is insensitive to the assumed duty cycle or Eddington ratio of quasar activity, and we find that the match between the two BH mass densities favors a relatively mild redshift evolution, with alpha ~ 0.26, with a positive evolution as strong as alpha>1.3 excluded at the 99% confidence level. A direct match between the characteristic BH mass in the VDF--based and quasar LF--based BH mass functions also yields a mean Eddington ratio of lambda ~ 0.5-1 that is roughly constant within 0<z<3. A strong positive evolution in the M_BH-sigma relation is still allowed by the data if galaxies increase, on average, their velocity dispersions since the moment of formation, due to dissipative processes. If we assume that the mean velocity dispersion of the host galaxies evolves as sigma(z)=sigma(0)*(1+z)^{-gamma}, we find a lower limit of gamma>0.23 for alpha>1.5. abridged
Some previous investigations have found that the fraction (f_AGN) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) is lower in clusters than in the field. This can result from the suppression of galaxy-galaxy mergers in high-velocity dispersion (sigma_v) clusters, if the formation and/or fueling of AGNs is directly related to the merging process. We investigate the existence of a relation between f_AGN and sigma_v in galaxy clusters in order to shed light on the formation and evolution processes of AGNs and cluster galaxies. Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey we determine f_AGN and sigma_v for the c…
We re-examine the locus of narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies on the M_BH--sigma (black hole mass--bulge velocity dispersion) plane in the light of the results from large new optically selected samples. We find that (1) soft X-ray selected NLS1s have a lower ratio of BH mass to σ^{4}_{[OIII]} than broad line Seyfert 1 galaxies; this remains a robust statistical result contrary to recent claims otherwise; (2) optically selected NLS1s have systematically lower Eddington luminosity ratio compared to X-ray selected NLS1s; and (3) as a result, the locus of NLS1s on the M_BH--sigma plane is affected by …
We present black hole mass--bulge velocity dispersion relation for a complete sample of 75 soft X-ray selected AGNs: 43 broad line Seyfert 1s and 32 narrow line Seyfert 1s. We use luminosity and FWHM(H-beta) as surrogates for black hole mass and FWHM([OIII]) as a surrogate for the bulge velocity dispersion. We find that NLS1s lie below the M-BH - sigma relation of BLS1s, confirming the Mathur et al. (2001) result. The statistical result is robust and not due to any systematic measurement error. This has important consequences towards our understanding of black hole formation and growth: black …
Recent observations of young galaxies at redshifts z ~ 3 have revealed simultaneous AGN and starburst activity, as well as galaxy-wide superwinds. I show that there is probably a close connection between these phenomena by extending an earlier treatment of the M_BH - sigma relation (King, 2003). As the black hole grows, an outflow drives a shell into the surrounding gas. This stalls after a dynamical time at a size determined by the hole's current mass and thereafter grows on the Salpeter timescale. The gas trapped inside this bubble cools and forms stars and is recycled as accretion and outfl…
Black hole masses are tightly correlated with the stellar velocity dispersions of the bulges which surround them, and slightly less-well correlated with the bulge luminosity. It is common to use these correlations to estimate the expected abundance of massive black holes. This is usually done by starting from an observed distribution of velocity dispersions or luminosities and then changing variables. This procedure neglects the fact that there is intrinsic scatter in these black hole mass--observable correlations. Accounting for this scatter results in estimates of black hole abundances which…
We compiled a sample of 95 AGNs serendipitously detected in the 3-20 keV band at Galactic latitude |b|>10 during the RXTE slew survey (XSS, Revnivtsev et al.), and utilize it to study the statistical properties of the local population of AGNs, including X-ray luminosity function and absorption distribution. We find that among low X-ray luminosity (Lx < 10^43.5 erg/s) AGNs, the ratio of absorbed (characterized by intrinsic absorption in the range 10^22 cm^-2 < NH < 10^24 cm^-2) and unabsorbed (NH < 10^22 cm^-2) objects is 2:1, while this ratio drops to less than 1:5 for higher luminosity AGNs. …
An updated catalogue of 76 galaxies with direct supermassive black hole mass measurements (M_bh) plus, when available, their host bulge's central velocity dispersion (sigma_0) is provided. Fifty of these mass measurements are considered reliable, while the others remain somewhat uncertain at this time. An additional eight stellar systems, including one stellar cluster and three globular clusters, are listed as hosting potential intermediate mass black holes < 10^6 M_solar. With this larger data set, the demographics within the M_bh-sigma_0 diagram are briefly explored. Many barred galaxies are…
We propose a new method of estimation of the black hole masses in AGN based on the normalized excess variance, sigma_{nxs}^2. We derive a relation between sigma_{nxs}^2, the length of the observation, T, the light curve bin size, Delta t, and the black hole mass, assuming that (i) the power spectrum above the high frequency break, f_{bf}, has a slope of -2, (ii) the high frequency break scales with black hole mass, (iii) the power spectrum amplitude (in 'frequency x power' space) is universal and (iv) sigma_{nxs}^2 is calculated from observations of length T < 1/f_{bf}. Values of black hole ma…
We reconsider the inference of spatial power spectra from angular clustering data and show how to include correlations in both the angular correlation function and the spatial power spectrum. Inclusion of the full covariance matrices loosens the constraints on large-scale structure inferred from the APM survey by over a factor of two. We present a new inversion technique based on singular value decomposition that allows one to propagate the covariance matrix on the angular correlation function through to that of the spatial power spectrum and to reconstruct smooth power spectra without underes…
Galaxy bulge luminosity L, black hole mass (Mbh), and stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_*) increase together in a way suggesting a close evolutionary relationship. Measurements of the Mbh-sigma_* relationship as a function of cosmic time may shed light on the origin of this relationship. Direct measurements of sigma_* at high redshift are difficult, and the width of the narrow emission lines of AGN has been proposed as a surrogate. We investigate the utility of using sigma_[OIII] for sigma_* by examining host galaxy magnitudes and [OIII] line widths for low redshift QSOs. For radio-quiet QSOs…
We present partial-correlation analyses that examine the strengths of the relationships between L_UV, L_X, Alpha_OX, and redshift for optically-selected AGNs. We extend the work of Strateva et al. (2005), that analyzed optically-selected AGNs from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), by including 52 moderate-luminosity, optically-selected AGNs from the COMBO-17 survey with corresponding deep (~250 ks to 1 Ms) X-ray observations from the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South. The COMBO-17 survey extends ~3 magnitudes deeper than the SDSS and probes the moderate-luminosity AGNs that numerically domi…
We use a complete AGN sample (Ho et al. 1997) to study the environment of Seyferts, LINERs and HII galaxies. For each AGN we search for companions in the UZC redshift catalogue and compute local as well as large scale neighbour density and distance to the nearest neighbour. We find that on small scale (~ 0.2 h^-1 Mpc) LINERs exhibit denser environments than Seyferts and HII galaxies at 3 sigma significance level. The same result is not confirmed when densities are computed on large scales. LINERs also exhibit closer nearest neighbours than Seyferts and HII galaxies (at 2 sigma c.l.). However, …
The X-ray Background (XRB) probably originates from the integrated X-ray emission of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Modelling of its flat spectrum implies considerable absorption in most AGN. Compton down-scattering means that sources in which the absorption is Compton thick are unlikely to be major contributors to the background intensity so the observed spectral intensity at about 30 keV is little affected by photoelectric absorption. Assuming that the intrinsic photon index of AGN is 2, we then use the 30 keV intensity of the XRB to infer the absorption-corrected energy density of the backgr…
QSOs allow study of the evolution of the relationship between black holes in galactic nuclei and their host galaxies. The black hole mass can be derived from the widths of the broad emission lines, and the stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_*) of the host galaxy can be inferred from the narrow emission lines. Results based on [OIII] and [OII] line widths indicate that the black hole mass - sigma_* relationship, at redshifts up to z ~ 2, is consistent with no evolution or an increase of up to ~ 0.5 dex in black hole mass at fixed sigma_*. CO line widths offer an estimate of sigma_* for luminous…
In the standard Cold Dark Matter model of structure formation, massive clusters form via the merger of smaller clusters. N-body/hydrodynamical simulations of merging galaxy clusters have shown that mergers can temporarily boost the X-ray luminosity and temperature of the merged cluster above the equilibrium values for the merged system. The cumulative effect of these "merger boosts" will affect the observed X-ray luminosity functions (XLFs) and temperature functions (TFs) of clusters. Merger boosts may bias the values of sigma_8 and Omega_0 inferred from cluster XLFs and TFs if virial equilibr…
A combined analysis of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and Lyman-a forest data allows to constrain the matter power spectrum from small scales of about 1 Mpc/h all the way to the horizon scale. The long lever arm and complementarity provided by such an analysis has previously led to a significant tightening of the constraints on the shape and the amplitude of the power spectrum of primordial density fluctuations. We present here a combined analysis of the WMAP three year results with Lyman-a forest data. The amplitude of the matter power spectrum sigma_8 and the spectral index ns inferred fr…
X-ray surveys facilitate investigations of the environment of AGNs. Deep Chandra observations revealed that the AGNs source surface density rises near clusters of galaxies. The natural extension of these works is the measurement of spatial clustering of AGNs around clusters and the investigation of relative biasing between active galactic nuclei and galaxies near clusters. The major aims of this work are to obtain a measurement of the correlation length of AGNs around clusters and a measure of the averaged clustering properties of a complete sample of AGNs in dense environments. We present the…
We describe the general problem of estimating black hole masses of AGN by calculating the conditional probability distribution of M_BH given some set of observables. Special attention is given to the case where one uses the AGN continuum luminosity and emission line widths to estimate M_BH, and we outline how to set up the conditional probability distribution of M_BH given the observed luminosity, line width, and redshift. We show how to combine the broad line estimates of M_BH with information from an intrinsic correlation between M_BH and L, and from the intrinsic distribution of M_BH, in a …
The link between nuclear activity and the host galaxy remains elusive. It seems now clear that the galactic environment is not the key, and that there is no significant apparent difference in terms of the presence of bars/spirals between active and non-active galaxies. Nuclear activity nevertheless requires a small central gas reservoir (10^4-10^7 Msun) which may be only partly consumed during the 10^6-10^7 yr AGN duty cycle. A possible route towards a better understanding of the involved physical processes is to directly probe the gravitational potential of the host galaxies, with the hope th…
The kinematical parameters of the local field RR Lyrae population and the zero point of the log P--<M_K> relation for these variables are inferred by applying the statistical parallax (maximum-likelihood) technique to a sample of 182 RR Lyraes with known periods, radial-velocities, metallicities, K-band photometry, and absolute proper motions on the ICRS system. The K-band magnitudes were adopted from the list of Fernley et al. (1998) and the 2MASS Second Incremental Data Release. The parameters of the velocity distribution are found to be (U_0,V_0,W_0) = (-10 +/- 10, -51 +/- 8, -14 +/- 5) km/…
Black hole masses predicted from the Mbh-sigma relationship conflict with those predicted from the Mbh-L relationship for the most luminous galaxies, such as brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). This is because stellar velocity dispersion, sigma, increases only weakly with L for BCGs and other giant ellipticals. The Mbh-L relationship predicts that the most luminous BCGs may have Mbh approaching 10^{10}M_sol, while the M-sigma relationship always predicts Mbh<3X10^9M_sol. We argue that the Mbh-L relationship is a plausible or even preferred description for BCGs and other galaxies of similar lumi…
The Infrared Space Observatory was used to search for a tracer of the warm and dense neutral interstellar medium, the [O I] 63.18 micron line, in four ultraluminous IRAS sources lying at redshifts between 0.6 and 1.4. While these sources are quasars, their infrared continuum emission suggests a substantial interstellar medium. No [O I] flux was securely detected after probing down to a 3 sigma sensitivity level sufficient for detecting line emission in starbursts with similar continuum emission. However, if the detection threshold is slightly relaxed, one target is detected with 2.7 sigma sign…
We present a detailed X-ray spectral analysis of the sources in the 1Ms catalog of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) taking advantage of optical spectroscopy and photometric redshifts for 321 sources. As a default spectral model, we adopt a power law with slope Gamma with an intrinsic redshifted absorption N_H, a fixed Galactic absorption and an unresolved Fe emission line. For 82 X-ray bright sources, we perform the X-ray spectral analysis leaving both Gamma and N_H free. The weighted mean value is <Gamma>~ 1.75+-0.02, with an intrinsic dispersion of sigma~0.30. We do not find hints of a co…
We analyze a sample of 32 galaxies for which a dynamical estimate of the mass of the hot stellar component, M_bulge, is available. For each of these galaxies, we calculate the mass of the central black hole, M_BH, using the tight empirical correlation between M_BH and the bulge stellar velocity dispersion. The frequency function N(log M_BH/M_bulge) is reasonably well described as a Gaussian with <log M_BH/M_bulge> ~ -2.90 and standard deviation 0.45; the implied mean ratio of black hole to bulge mass is a factor 5 smaller than generally quoted in the literature. We present marginal evidence fo…
We investigate with unprecedented accuracy the correlations between the dynamical mass-to-light ratio M/L and other global observables of E and S0 galaxies. We construct two-integral Jeans and three-integral Schwarzschild dynamical models for a sample of 25 E/S0 galaxies with SAURON integral-field stellar kinematics. We find a tight correlation of the form (M/L)=(3.80+/-0.14)*(sigma/200 km/s)^(0.84+/-0.07) between the dynamical M/L (in the I-band) and the luminosity-weighted second moment (sigma) of the line-of-sight velocity-distribution within Re. The observed rms scatter in M/L for our samp…
We show that black holes grow substantially by accretion at close to Eddington rates. Using a complete sample of soft X-ray selected AGNs, Grupe & Mathur (2004) have shown that narrow line Seyfert 1 galaxies, as a class, lie below the M_BH-sigma relation of normal galaxies. Some NLS1s, however, lie on or close to the M_BH-sigma relation. Here we show that not all NLS1s accrete at close to Eddington rates: those with low {L/L_{Eddington}} are close to the M_BH-sigma relation, and those with high {L/L_{Eddington}} are far. With various tests in this paper, we argue that black holes grow in mass …
Using a simple description of feedback from black hole (BH) growth, we develop an analytic model for the fueling of Seyferts (low-luminosity AGN) and their relation to their host galaxies, Eddington ratio distributions, and cosmological evolution. We derive a solution for evolution of accretion rates in a feedback-driven blast wave, applicable to large-scale outflows from bright quasars in galaxy mergers, low-luminosity AGN, and BHs in supernova remnants. Under the assumption that cold gas stochastically accretes onto a central SMBH at a rate set by the dynamics of that gas, our solution deter…
Evidence suggests that the gamma-ray burst (GRB) ejecta is likely magnetized, although the degree of magnetization of the ejecta is unknown. We derive a rigorous analytical solution for the relativistic 90 degree shocks under the ideal MHD condition, and use them to study the reverse shock emission properties of an arbitrarily magnetized ejecta. Contrary to the previous belief, we find that strong relativistic shocks still exist in the high-sigma limit. Assuming a constant density of the circumburst medium, we study the shell-medium interaction in detail and categorize various critical radii f…
Deep Chandra X-ray exposures provide an efficient route for locating optically faint active galactic nuclei (AGN) at high redshifts. We use deep multicolor optical data to search for z>5 AGN in the 2 Ms X-ray exposure of the Chandra Deep Field-North. Of the 423 X-ray sources bright enough (z'<25.2) for a color-color analysis, at most one lies at z=5-6 and none at z>6. The z>5 object is spectroscopically confirmed at z=5.19. Only 31 of the 77 sources with z'>25.2 are undetected in the B or V bands at the 2-sigma level and could lie at z>5. There are too few moderate luminosity AGN at z=5-6.5 to…
We have examined the spatial distribution of 856 AGN detected by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) using a direct search for structures with the minimal spanning tree. The AGNs were compiled from an area of 7000 deg^2, in which optical identifications of RASS sources were made with the help of the digitized objective prism plates of the Hamburg Quasar Survey (HQS). Redshifts were taken from the literature or from own follow-up observations. The sample probes the spatial distribution at low redshifts, since the redshift distribution peaks at z=0.1. The application of the minimal spanning tree led…
We study the host galaxies and black holes of typical X-ray selected AGN at intermediate redshifts (z~0.5-1.4). The AGN are selected such that their spectral energy distributions are dominated by stellar emission, i.e., they show a prominent 1.6micron bump thus minimizing the AGN emission contamination. This AGN population comprises approximately 50% of the X-ray selected AGN at these redshifts. AGN reside in the most massive galaxies at the redshifts probed here, with characteristic stellar masses that are intermediate between those of local type 2 AGN and high redshift (z~2) AGN. The inferre…
Here we present the analysis of 3D spectroscopic data of three Blue Compact Galaxies (Mrk324, Mrk370, and IIIZw102). Each of the more than 22500 spectra obtained for each galaxy has been fitted by a single gaussian from which we have inferred the velocity dispersion (sigma), the peak intensity (Ipeak), and the central wavelength (lambda_c). The analysis shows that the sigma vs Ipeak diagrams look remarkably similar to those obtained for giant extragalactic HII regions. They all present a supersonic narrow horizontal band that extends across all the range of intensities and that result from the…
Supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei show a close relationship between the black hole mass, luminosity, and stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_*) of the host galaxy bulge. Probing these relationships at high redshift may shed light on the link between the formation of the galactic bulge and central black hole, but direct measurements of stellar velocity dispersion at high redshift are difficult. We show that [OIII] line widths provide a useful surrogate for sigma_* by comparing sigma_[OIII] with the value of sigma_* predicted by the Faber-Jackson relation for QSOs with measured host gal…
We investigate the Mg-sigma and <Fe>-sigma relations in a sample of 72 early-type galaxies drawn mostly from cluster and group environments using a homogeneous data-set which is well-calibrated onto the Lick/IDS system. The small intrinsic scatter in Mg at a given sigma gives upper limits on the spread in age and metallicity of 49% and 32% respectively, if the spread is attributed to one quantity only and if the variations in age and metallicity are uncorrelated. The age/metallicity distribution as inferred from the Hbeta vs <Fe> diagnostic diagram reinforces this conclusion, as we find mostly…
We define a sample of 27 radio-excess AGN in the Chandra Deep Field North by selecting galaxies that do not obey the radio/infrared correlation for radio-quiet AGN and star-forming galaxies. Approximately 60% of these radio-excess AGN are X-ray undetected in the 2 Ms Chandra catalog, even at exposures of > 1 Ms; 25% lack even 2-sigma X-ray detections. The absorbing columns to the faint X-ray-detected objects are 10^22 cm^-2 < N_H < 10^24 cm^-2, i.e., they are obscured but unlikely to be Compton thick. Using a local sample of radio-selected AGN, we show that a low ratio of X-ray to radio emissi…
We postulate that supermassive black-holes grow in the centers of galaxies until they unbind the galactic gas that feeds them. We show that the corresponding self-regulation condition yields a correlation between black-hole mass (Mbh) and galaxy velocity dispersion (sigma) as inferred in the local universe, and recovers the observed optical and X-ray luminosity functions of quasars at redshifts up to z~6 based on the hierarchical evolution of galaxy halos in a Lambda-CDM cosmology. With only one free parameter and a simple algorithm, our model yields the observed evolution in the number densit…
Programs to observe evolution in the Mbh-sigma or Mbh-L relations typically compare black-hole masses, Mbh, in high-redshift galaxies selected by nuclear activity to Mbh in local galaxies selected by luminosity L, or stellar velocity dispersion sigma. Because AGN luminosity is likely to depend on Mbh, selection effects are different for high-redshift and local samples, potentially producing a false signal of evolution. This bias arises because cosmic scatter in the Mbh-sigma and Mbh-L relations means that the mean log(L) or log(sigma) among galaxies that host a black hole of given Mbh, may be …
Context: Knowledge of the age distribution of stars in young clusters and associations is crucial to constrain models of star formation. HR diagrams of different young clusters and associations suggest the presence of age spreads, but the influence of errors on the derived ages is still largely debated. Determination of lithium abundances in low-mass stars represents an alternative and robust way to infer stellar ages. Aims: We measured lithium in a sample of low mass members of the young (4-5 Myr) sigma Ori cluster with the main goal of investigating its star formation history. Methods: Using…
The so-called Limber equation is widely used in the literature to relate the projected angular clustering of galaxies to the spatial clustering of galaxies in an approximate way. This paper gives estimates of where the regime of applicability of Limber's equation stops. Limber's equation is accurate for small galaxy separations but breaks down beyond a certain separation that depends mainly on the ratio sigma/R and to some degree on the power-law index, gamma, of spatial clustering xi; sigma is the one-sigma width of the galaxy distribution in comoving distance, and R the mean comoving distanc…
We investigate the relationship between black hole mass and bulge luminosity for AGNs with reverberation-based black hole mass measurements and bulge luminosities from two-dimensional decompositions of Hubble Space Telescope host galaxy images. We find that the slope of the relationship for AGNs is 0.76-0.85 with an uncertainty of ~0.1, somewhat shallower than the M_BH \propto L^{1.0+/-0.1} relationship that has been fit to nearby quiescent galaxies with dynamical black hole mass measurements. This is somewhat perplexing, as the AGN black hole masses include an overall scaling factor that brin…
We investigate the spatial clustering of X-ray selected sources in the two deepest X-ray fields to date, namely the 2Msec Chandra Deep Field North (CDFN) and the 1Msec Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). The projected correlation function w(r_p), measured on scales ~0.2-10 h^-1 Mpc for a sample of 240 sources with spectroscopic redshift in the CDFN and 124 sources in the CDFS at a median redshift of z~0.8, is used to constrain the amplitude and slope of the real space correlation function xi(r)=(r/r0)^-gamma. The clustering signal is detected at high confidence (>~ 7 sigma) in both fields. The am…
Using the extended J, H and K magnitudes provided by the 2MASS data archive, we consider the position of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the observed relations between inferred supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass and the host galaxy properties, as well as their position in the stellar velocity dispersion and luminosity (sigma-L) relation, compared to E and S0 galaxies. We find that SMBH masses (M) derived from near-infrared (NIR) magnitudes do not exceed 10e9.5Msol and that these masses agree well with the predictions made from sigma. In the NIR, there is no evidence that BCGs leave the s…
More than half of all low-redshift AGN exhibit UV and X-ray absorption by highly ionized gas. The observed UV and X-ray absorption lines are almost always blue-shifted at velocities of hundreds of km/s, indicating that the absorbing gas is outflowing from the active nucleus. In some cases the inferred mass flux rivals the Eddington limit of the central black hole, an indication that these outflows are intimately related to the mass accretion and energy generation mechanism in AGN. The ejected material can also have an affect on the interstellar medium of the host galaxy and the surrounding int…
We investigate morphological structure parameters and local environments of distant moderate-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies in the overlap between the HST/ACS observations of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and the two Chandra Deep Fields. We compute near-neighbor counts and BViz asymmetry (A) and concentration (C) indices for ~35,500 GOODS/ACS galaxies complete to z_850 ~ 26.6, including the resolved hosts of 322 X-ray-selected AGNs. Distributions of (1) z_850 asymmetry for 130 AGN hosts at z_850 < 23 and (2) near-neighbor counts for 173 AGN hosts a…
We discuss the crucial role of a dynamical picture in the analysis of AGN intrinsic absorbers data. High quality FUSE data of Mrk 279 are used to demonstrate that the line of sight covering fraction is a strong function of velocity. In Mrk 279, as well as in most cases where the data is of high enough quality, the shape of the absorption troughs is mainly determined by the velocity-dependent covering fraction. We argue that the traditional ``cloud'' picture of AGN outflows is hard pressed to account for the velocity-dependent covering fraction, as well as for the highly super-thermal width of …
We analyse two-dimensional near-IR K-band spectra from the inner 660x315 pc^2 of the Seyfert galaxy NGC7582 obtained with the Gemini GNIRS IFU. The nucleus harbors an unresolved source well reproduced by a blackbody of temperature T 1050 K, which we attribute to emission by circumnuclear dust located closer than 25 pc from the nucleus, with total mass of ~3x10^{-3}M_Sun. Surrounding the nucleus, we observe a ring of active star formation with radius of ~190 pc, an age of ~5 Myr. The radiation of the young stars in the ring accounts for at least 80 % of the ionization observed in the Brgamma em…
The first VLBI images of water maser emission in the Circinus Galaxy AGN show both a warped, edge-on accretion disk and an outflow 0.1 to 1 pc from the central engine. The inferred central mass is 1.3 million suns, while the disk mass may be on the order of 0.1 million suns, based on a nearly Keplerian rotation curve. The bipolar, wide-angle outflow appears to contain ``bullets'' ejected from within <0.1 pc of the central mass. The positions of filaments and bullets observed in the AGN ionization cone on kpc-scales suggest that the disk channels the flow to a radius of about 0.4 pc, at which t…
A new evaluation of the constraint on the number of light neutrino species (N_nu) from big bang nucleosynthesis suggests a discrepancy between the predicted light element abundances and those inferred from observations, unless the inferred primordial 4He abundance has been underestimated by 0.014 +/- 0.004 (1 sigma) or less than 10% (95%C.L.) of 3He survives stellar processing. With the quoted systematic errors in the observed abundances and a conservative chemical evolution parameterization, the best fit to the combined data is N_nu = 2.1 +/- 0.3 (1 sigma) and the upper limit is N_nu < 2.6 (9…
