Programs to observe evolution in the Mbh-sigma or Mbh-L relations typically compare black-hole masses, Mbh, in high-redshift galaxies selected by nuclear activity to Mbh in local galaxies selected by luminosity L, or stellar velocity dispersion sigma. Because AGN luminosity is likely to depend on Mbh, selection effects are different for high-redshift and local samples, potentially producing a false signal of evolution. This bias arises because cosmic scatter in the Mbh-sigma and Mbh-L relations means that the mean log(L) or log(sigma) among galaxies that host a black hole of given Mbh, may be substantially different than the log(L) or log(sigma) obtained from inverting the Mbh-L or Mbh-sigma relations for the same nominal Mbh. The bias is particularly strong at high Mbh, where the luminosity and dispersion functions of galaxies are falling rapidly. The most massive black holes occur more often as rare outliers in galaxies of modest mass than in the even rarer high-mass galaxies, which would otherwise be the sole location of such black holes in the absence of cosmic scatter. Because of this bias, Mbh will typically appear to be too large in the distant sample for a given L or sigma. For the largest black holes and the largest plausible cosmic scatter, the bias can reach a factor of 3 in Mbh for the Mbh-sigma relation and a factor of 9 for the Mbh-L relation. Unfortunately, the actual cosmic scatter is not known well enough to correct for the bias. Measuring evolution of the Mbh and galaxy property relations requires object selection to be precisely defined and exactly the same at all redshifts.
Most elliptical galaxies contain central black holes, whose masses scale proportionally to the observed central velocity dispersions of the host galaxies according to the so-called Mbh-sigma relation. Here we discuss some consequences that can be derived by combining the Mbh-sigma relation with the scaling relation describing the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies. In particular, the possibility of substantial dissipationless merging in the formation and evolution of elliptical galaxies is discussed. Enforcing the merger end-products to satisfy the two scaling relations mentioned above, …
We explore the effects of dissipationless merging on the Fundamental Plane of elliptical galaxies by using a N-body code based on a new, high performance numerical scheme (Dehnen 2002). We investigate the extreme cases of galaxy growth by equal mass merging and accretion of small stellar systems; in a subset of simulations we also consider the presence of dark matter halos around the merging galaxies. Curiously, we found that the Fundamental Plane is preserved by major merging, while in the accretion scenario its edge--on thickness is only marginally reproduced, with substantial thickening in …
Based on the modeling of the central emission-line width measured over sub-arcsecond apertures with the Hubble Space Telescope, we present stringent upper bounds on the mass of the central supermassive black hole, MBH, for a sample of 105 nearby galaxies (D<100Mpc) spanning a wide range of Hubble types (E-Sc) and values of the central stellar velocity dispersion, sigma (58-419km/s). For the vast majority of the objects the derived MBH upper limits run parallel and above the well-known MBH-sigma relation independently of the galaxy distance, suggesting that our nebular line-width measurements t…
We present new accurate near-infrared (NIR) spheroid (bulge) structural parameters obtained by two-dimensional image analysis for all galaxies with a direct black hole (BH) mass determination. As expected, NIR bulge luminosities Lbul and BH masses are tightly correlated, and if we consider only those galaxies with secure BH mass measurement and accurate Lbul (27 objects), the spread of MBH-Lbul is similar to MBH-sigma, where sigma is the effective stellar velocity dispersion. We find an intrinsic rms scatter of ~0.3 dex in log MBH. By combining the bulge effective radii R_e measured in our ana…
Black hole masses predicted from the Mbh-sigma relationship conflict with those predicted from the Mbh-L relationship for the most luminous galaxies, such as brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). This is because stellar velocity dispersion, sigma, increases only weakly with L for BCGs and other giant ellipticals. The Mbh-L relationship predicts that the most luminous BCGs may have Mbh approaching 10^{10}M_sol, while the M-sigma relationship always predicts Mbh<3X10^9M_sol. We argue that the Mbh-L relationship is a plausible or even preferred description for BCGs and other galaxies of similar lumi…
It is common to estimate black hole abundances by using a measured correlation between black hole mass and another more easily measured observable such as the velocity dispersion or luminosity of the surrounding bulge. The correlation is used to transform the distribution of the observable into an estimate of the distribution of black hole masses. However, different observables provide different estimates: the Mbh-sigma relation predicts fewer massive black holes than does the Mbh-L relation. This is because the sigma-L relation in black hole samples currently available is inconsistent with th…
Recent numerical simulations of the fragmentation of primordial molecular clouds in hierarchical cosmogonies have suggested that the very first stars (the so-called Population III) may have been rather massive. Here we point out that a numerous population of massive black holes (MBHs) -- with masses intermediate between those of stellar and supermassive holes -- may be the endproduct of such an episode of pregalactic star formation. If only one MBH with m > 150 msun formed in each of the `minihalos' collapsing at z=20 from 3-sigma fluctuations, then the mass density of Pop III MBHs would be co…
Using SPH numerical simulations, we investigate the effects of gas on the inspiral and merger of a massive black hole binary. This study is motivated by the very massive nuclear gas disks observed in the central regions of merging galaxies. Here we present results that expand on the treatment in a previous work (Escala, Larson, Coppi & Mardones 2004; henceforth Paper I), by studying more realistic models. We run a variety of models, ranging from simulations with a relatively smooth gas disk to cases in which the gas has a more clumpy spatial distribution. We also vary the inclination angle bet…
We present results from HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopy of the gas motions in the nuclear region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5252. The observed velocity field is consistent with gas in regular rotation with superposed localized patches of disturbed gas. The dynamics of the circumnuclear gas can be accurately reproduced by adding to the stellar mass component a compact dark mass of MBH = 0.95 (-0.45;+1.45) 10E9 M(sun), very likely a supermassive black hole. Contrarily to results obtained in similar studies rotational broadening is sufficient to reproduce also the behaviour of line widths. The M…
Galaxy bulge luminosity L, black hole mass (Mbh), and stellar velocity dispersion (sigma_*) increase together in a way suggesting a close evolutionary relationship. Measurements of the Mbh-sigma_* relationship as a function of cosmic time may shed light on the origin of this relationship. Direct measurements of sigma_* at high redshift are difficult, and the width of the narrow emission lines of AGN has been proposed as a surrogate. We investigate the utility of using sigma_[OIII] for sigma_* by examining host galaxy magnitudes and [OIII] line widths for low redshift QSOs. For radio-quiet QSOs…
(abridged) We investigate the kinematics of the central gas disk of the radio-loud elliptical galaxy NGC 4335, derived from HST/STIS long-slit spectroscopic observations of Halpha+[NII] along 3 parallel slit positions. The observed mean velocities are consistent with a rotating thin disk. We model the gas disk in the customary way. This sets a 3 sigma upper limit of 10^8 Msun on black hole mass, Mbh. The velocity dispersion at r <0.5'' is in excess of that predicted by the thin rotating disk model. This does not invalidate the model, if the excess dispersion is caused by localized turbulent mo…
We investigate the relation between circular velocity vc and bulge velocity dispersion sigma in spiral galaxies, based on literature data and new spectroscopic observations. We find a strong, nearly linear vc-sigma correlation with a negligible intrinsic scatter, and a striking agreement with the corresponding relation for elliptical galaxies. The least massive galaxies (sigma < 80 km/s) significantly deviate from this relation. We combine this vc-sigma correlation with the well-known MBH-sigma relation to obtain a tight correlation between circular velocity and supermassive black hole mass, a…
We postulate that supermassive black-holes grow in the centers of galaxies until they unbind the galactic gas that feeds them. We show that the corresponding self-regulation condition yields a correlation between black-hole mass (Mbh) and galaxy velocity dispersion (sigma) as inferred in the local universe, and recovers the observed optical and X-ray luminosity functions of quasars at redshifts up to z~6 based on the hierarchical evolution of galaxy halos in a Lambda-CDM cosmology. With only one free parameter and a simple algorithm, our model yields the observed evolution in the number densit…
Early-type galaxy velocity dispersions and luminosities are correlated. The correlation estimated in local samples (< 100 Mpc) differs from that measured more recently in the SDSS. This is true even when systematics in the SDSS photometric and spectroscopic parameters have been accounted-for. We show that this is also true for the ENEAR sample if galaxy luminosities are estimated using distances which have been corrected for peculiar motions. We then show that, because the estimate of the `true' distance is derived from a correlation with velocity dispersion, in this case the D_n-sigma relatio…
We compute the expected gravitational wave signal from coalescing massive black hole (MBH) binaries at the center of galaxies in a hierarchical structure formation scenario in which seed holes of intermediate mass form far up in the dark halo merger tree. The merger history of DM halos and MBHs is followed from z=20 to the present in a LCDM cosmology. MBHs get incorporated through halo mergers into larger and larger structures, sink to the center owing to dynamical friction against the DM background, accrete cold material in the merger remnant, and form MBH binary systems. Stellar dynamical in…
We discuss the importance of feedback via photoionization and Compton heating on the co-evolution of massive black holes (MBHs) at the center of spheroidal galaxies and their stellar and gaseous components. We first assess the energetics of the radiative feedback from a typical quasar on the ambient interstellar medium. We then demonstrate that the observed Mbh-sigma relation could be established following the conversion of most of the gas of an elliptical progenitor into stars, specifically when the gas-to-stars mass ratio in the central regions has dropped to a low level ~0.01 or less, so th…
We compute the expected low-frequency gravitational wave signal from coalescing massive black hole (MBH) binaries at the center of galaxies. We follow the merging history of halos and associated holes via cosmological Monte Carlo realizations of the merger hierarchy from early times to the present in a LCDM cosmology. MBHs get incorporated through a series of mergers into larger and larger halos, sink to the centre owing to dynamical friction, accrete a fraction of the gas in the merger remnant to become more massive, and form a binary system. Stellar dynamical processes dominates the orbital …
We present new HST/STIS observations of Centaurus A. [SIII] 9533A was used to study the kinematics in the nuclear region with a 0.1" spatial resolution. The STIS data and the VLT/ISAAC spectra by Marconi et al. (2001) provide independent and consistent measures of the BH mass, which are in agreement with our previous estimate based on the ISAAC data alone: MBH=(1.1+/-0.1) 10^8 Msun for a disk inclination of i=25deg or or MBH=(6.5+/-0.7) 10^7 Msun for i=35deg, the largest i value allowed by the data. We find that the choice of the intrinsic surface brightness distribution, a crucial element in …
We present the ionised gas kinematics of the SB0 galaxy NGC 4435 from spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. This galaxy has been selected on the basis of its ground-based spectroscopy, for displaying a position velocity diagram consistent with the presence of a circumnuclear Keplerian disc rotating around a supermassive black hole (SMBH). We obtained the Halpha and [NII](6583) kinematics kinematics in the galaxy nucleus along the major axis and two parallel offset positions. We built a dynamical model of the gaseous disc taking into account the whole bidimensional vel…
We present new velocity dispersion measurements of sample of 12 spiral galaxies for which extended rotation curves are available. These data are used to refine a recently discovered correlation between the circular velocity and the central velocity dispersion of spiral galaxies. We find a slightly steeper slope for our larger sample, we confirm the negligible intrinsic scatter on this correlation, and we find a striking agreement with a corresponding relation for elliptical galaxies. We combine this correlation with the well-known MBH-sigma relation to obtain a tight correlation between the ci…
We propose a new method of estimation of the black hole masses in AGN based on the normalized excess variance, sigma_{nxs}^2. We derive a relation between sigma_{nxs}^2, the length of the observation, T, the light curve bin size, Delta t, and the black hole mass, assuming that (i) the power spectrum above the high frequency break, f_{bf}, has a slope of -2, (ii) the high frequency break scales with black hole mass, (iii) the power spectrum amplitude (in 'frequency x power' space) is universal and (iv) sigma_{nxs}^2 is calculated from observations of length T < 1/f_{bf}. Values of black hole ma…
We present the results of a recent reverberation-mapping campaign undertaken to improve measurements of the radius of the broad line region and the central black hole mass of the quasar PG 2130+099. Cross correlation of the 5100 angstrom continuum and H-beta emission-line light curves yields a time lag of 22.9 (+4.4 - 4.3) days, corresponding to a central black hole mass MBH= 3.8 (+/- 1.5) x 10^7 Msun. This value supports the notion that previous measurements yielded an incorrect lag. We re-analyzed previous datasets to investigate the possible sources of the discrepancy and conclude that prev…
We present HST/STIS spectra of the Sbc spiral galaxy NGC 4041 which were used to map the velocity field of the gas in its nuclear region. We detect the presence of a compact (r~0.4" ~40 pc), high surface brightness, rotating nuclear disk co-spatial with a nuclear star cluster. The disk is characterized by a rotation curve with a peak to peak amplitude of ~40 km/s and is systematically blueshifted by 10 - 20 km/s with respect to the galaxy systemic velocity. With the standard assumption of constant mass-to-light ratio and with the nuclear disk inclination taken from the outer disk, we find that…
We investigate the emission of sub-millimetre-wave radiation from galaxies in a 165 square arcminute region surrounding the Hubble Deep Field North. The data were obtained from dedicated observing runs from our group and others using the SCUBA camera on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, and combined using techniques specifically developed for low signal-to-noise source recovery. The resulting `Super-map' is derived from about 60 shifts of JCMT time, taken in a variety of observing modes and chopping strategies, and combined here for the first time. At 850 micron we detect 19 sources at >4 sig…
With the aid of a simple yet robust approach we investigate the influence of dissipationless and dissipative merging on galaxy structure, and the consequent effects on the scaling laws followed by elliptical galaxies. Our results suggest that ellipticals cannot be originated by parabolic merging of low mass spheroids only, even in presence of substantial gas dissipation. However, we also found that scaling laws such as the Faber-Jackson, Kormendy, Fundamental Plane, and the Mbh -sigma relations, when considered over the whole mass range spanned by ellipticals in the local universe, are robust …
We discuss the role of feedback via photoionization and Compton heating in the co-evolution of massive black holes at the center of spheroidal galaxies and their stellar and gaseous components. We first assess the energetics of the radiative feedback from a typical quasar on the ambient interstellar gas. We then demonstrate that the observed Mbh-sigma relation could be established at a relatively early epoch in galactic evolution when the formation of the stellar bulge was almost completed and the gas-to-stars mass ratio was reduced to a low level ~0.01 such that cooling could not keep up with…
According to the galactic cannibalism model, cD galaxies are formed in the center of galaxy clusters by merging of massive galaxies and accretion of smaller stellar systems: however, observational examples of the initial phases of this process are lacking. We have identified a strong candidate for this early stage of cD galaxy formation: a group of five elliptical galaxies in the core of the X-ray cluster C0337-2522 at redshift z=0.59. With the aid of numerical simulations, in which the galaxies are represented by N-body systems, we study their dynamical evolution up to z=0; the cluster dark m…
Using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we probe the halo mass distribution by studying the velocities of satellites orbiting isolated galaxies. In a subsample that covers 2500 sq. degrees on the sky, we detect about 3000 satellites with absolute blue magnitudes going down to M_B = -14; most of the satellites have M_B=-16 to -18, comparable to the magnitudes of M32 and the Magellanic Clouds. After a careful, model-independent removal of interlopers, we find that the line-of-sight velocity dispersion of satellites declines with distance to the primary. For an L* galaxy the r.m.s. line-of-sig…
We consider the effect of radiation pressure from ionizing photons on black hole (BH) mass estimates based on the application of the virial theorem to broad emission lines in AGN spectra. BH masses based only on the virial product V^2R and neglecting the effect of radiation pressure can be severely underestimated especially in objects close to the Eddington limit. We provide an empirical calibration of the correction for radiation pressure and we show that it is consistent with a simple physical model in which BLR clouds are optically thick to ionizing radiation and have average column densiti…
We present our cosmic shear analysis of GEMS, one of the largest wide-field surveys ever undertaken by the Hubble Space Telescope. Imaged with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), GEMS spans 795 square arcmin in the Chandra Deep Field South. We detect weak lensing by large-scale structure in high resolution F606W GEMS data from ~60 resolved galaxies per square arcminute. We measure the two-point shear correlation function, the top-hat shear variance and the shear power spectrum, performing an E/B mode decomposition for each statistic. We show that we are not limited by systematic errors and …
