We present the first use of the Gemini North laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system and an integral field unit (IFU) to measure the stellar velocity dispersion of the host of a luminous quasar. The quasar PG1426+015 (z=0.086) was observed with the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) on the 8m Gemini North telescope in the H-band as part of the Science Verification phase of the new ALTAIR LGS AO system. The NIFS IFU and LGS AO are well suited for host studies of luminous quasars because one can achieve a large ratio of host to quasar light. We have measured the stellar velocity dispersion of PG1426+015 from 0.1'' to 1'' (0.16 kpc to 1.6 kpc) to be 217+/-15 km/s based on high signal-to-noise ratio measurements of Si I, Mg I, and several CO bandheads. This new measurement is a factor of four more precise than a previous measurement obtained with long-slit spectroscopy and good, natural seeing, yet was obtained with a shorter net integration time. We find that PG1426+015 has a velocity dispersion that places it significantly above the M-sigma relation of quiescent galaxies and lower-luminosity active galactic nuclei with black hole masses estimated from reverberation mapping. We discuss several possible explanations for this discrepancy that could be addressed with similar observations of a larger sample of luminous quasars.
All available observations of photometric standard stars obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Gemini North in the period from August 2001 to December 2003 have been used to establish the calibrations for photometry obtained with the instrument. The calibrations presented in this paper are based on significantly more photometric standard star observations than usually used by the individual users. Nightly photometric zero points as well as color terms are determined. The color terms are expected to be valid for all observations taken prior to UT 2004 November 21 at which time t…
g', r', and i' images obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini North are used to investigate the metallicity and stellar content of the M31 dwarf spheroidal companion galaxy And V. Red giant branch (RGB) stars are traced out to radii in excess of 126 arcsec from the galaxy center, indicating that And V extends over a diameter approaching 1 kpc. The mean g'-i' color of the RGB does not change with radius. Based on the slope of the RGB in the (i', g'-i') color-magnitude diagram we conclude that [Fe/H] = -2.2 +/- 0.1. This metallicity is lower than earlier estimates, an…
Deep H and K' images, recorded with the ALTAIR adaptive optics system and NIRI imager on Gemini North, are used to probe the red stellar content in a field with a projected distance of 1 kpc above the disk plane of the starburst galaxy M82. The data have an angular resolution of 0.08 arcsec FWHM, and individual AGB and RGB stars are resolved. The AGB extends to at least 1.7 mag in K above the RGB-tip, which occurs at K = 21.7. The relative numbers of bright AGB stars and RGB stars are consistent with stellar evolution models, and one of the brightest AGB stars has an H-K color and K brightness…
We present Gemini near-infrared spectroscopic observations of six luminous quasars at z=5.8$\sim$6.3. Five of them were observed using Gemini-South/GNIRS, which provides a simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.9--2.5 $μ$m in cross dispersion mode. The other source was observed in K band with Gemini-North/NIRI. We calculate line strengths for all detected emission lines and use their ratios to estimate gas metallicity in the broad-line regions of the quasars. The metallicity is found to be supersolar with a typical value of $\sim$4 Z_{\sun}, and a comparison with low-redshift observations shows…
We discuss H and K observations of three fields in the bulge and disk of M31 obtained with the Altair adaptive optics system and NIRI instrument on Gemini North. These are the highest resolution and deepest near-infrared observations obtained to date of the inner regions of M31, and demonstrate the promise of ground-based adaptive optics for studying the crowded regions of nearby galaxies. We have combined our observations with previously published HST/NICMOS observations of nine M31 fields and have derived the coarse star formation histories of M31's bulge and inner disk. From fits to the M_K…
We present spectroscopic observations of diffuse ionized gas (DIG) in M33 near the HII region NGC 604. We present the first detection of [OI] 6300 in the DIG of M33, one of the critical lines for distinguishing photo- from shock ionization models. We measure [OI]/Ha in the range of 0.04 to 0.10 and an increase in this ratio with decreasing emission measure. Our measurements of [SII]/Ha and [NII]/Ha also rise with decreasing emission measure, while our [OIII]/Hb measurements remain fairly constant. We have one tentative detection of He I in the region of brightest emission measure, with a ratio…
We report the discovery of a confirmed supernova (SN) and a supernova-candidate in near-infrared images from the ALTAIR/NIRI adaptive optics system on the Gemini-North Telescope and NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. The Gemini images were obtained as part of a near-infrared K-band search for highly-obscured SNe in the nuclear regions of luminous infrared galaxies. SN 2008cs apparent in the Gemini images is the first SN discovered using laser guide star adaptive optics. It is located at 1500 pc projected distance from the nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 17138-1017. The SN lumin…
Using the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field North and 15 micron ISOCAM HDF-N surveys we find a tight correlation between the population of strongly evolving starbursts discovered in faint 15 micron ISOCAM surveys and the apparently normal galaxy population detected in deep X-ray surveys. Up to 100% of the X-ray detected emission-line galaxies (ELGs) have 15 micron counterparts, in contrast to 10-20% of the X-ray detected absorption-line galaxies and AGN-dominated sources. None of the X-ray detected ELGs is detected in the hard band (2-8 keV), and their stacked-average X-ray spectral slope of Gamma=2.0 s…
We present first results from the Near-infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) located at Gemini North. For the active galaxies Cygnus A and Perseus A we observe rotationally-supported accretion disks and adduce the existence of massive central black holes and estimate their masses. In Cygnus A we also see remarkable high-excitation ionization cones dominated by photoionization from the central engine. In the T-Tauri stars HV Tau C and DG Tau we see highly-collimated bipolar outflows in the [Fe II] 1.644 micron line, surrounded by a slower molecular bipolar outflow seen in the H_2 lines, i…
We analyze the mass content of the massive strong-lensing cluster Abell 586 ($z = 0.17$). We use optical data (imaging and spectroscopy) obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) mounted on the 8-m Gemini-North telescope, together with publicly available X-ray data taken with the \textit{Chandra} space telescope. Employing different techniques -- velocity distribution of galaxies, weak gravitational lensing, and X-ray spatially resolved spectroscopy -- we derive mass and velocity dispersion estimates from each of them. All estimates agree well with each other, within a 68% conf…
Many extra-solar planets and a few planetary systems have been found indirectly by small periodic radial velocity variations around old nearby stars. The orbital characteristics of most of them are different from the planets in our solar system. Hence, planet formation theories have to be revised. Therefore, observational constraints regarding young planets would be very valuable. We have started a ground-based direct imaging search for giant planets in orbit around young nearby stars. Here, we will motivate the sample selection and will present our direct imaging observation of the very low-m…
We investigate the relationship between faint X-ray and 1.4 GHz radio source populations detected within 3' of the Hubble Deep Field North using the 1 Ms Chandra and 40 uJy VLA surveys. Within this region, we find that ~42% of the 62 X-ray sources have radio counterparts and ~71% of the 28 radio sources have X-ray counterparts; thus a 40 uJy VLA survey at 1.4 GHz appears to be well-matched to a 1 Ms Chandra observation. Among the different source populations sampled, we find that the majority of the 18 X-ray detected emission-line galaxies (ELGs) have radio and mid-infrared ISOCAM counterparts…
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of stellar populations in the X-ray-luminous cluster of galaxies RXJ0142.0+2131 at z=0.280. This paper analyses the results of high signal-to-noise spectroscopy, as well as g'-, r'-, and i'-band imaging, using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini North. Of 43 spectroscopic targets, we find 30 cluster members over a range in color. Central velocity dispersions and absorption-line strengths for lines in the range 3700A < lambda_rest < 5800A are derived for cluster members, and are compared with a low-redshift sample of cluster galaxies, …
We report the discovery of two faint ultracool companions to the nearby (d~17.9 pc) young G2V star HD 130948 (HR 5534, HIP 72567) using the Hokupa'a adaptive optics instrument mounted on the Gemini North 8-meter telescope. Both objects have the same common proper motion as the primary star as seen over a 7 month baseline and have near-IR photometric colors that are consistent with an early-L classification. Near-IR spectra taken with the NIRSPEC AO instrument on the Keck II telescope reveal K I lines, FeH, and water bandheads. Based on these spectra, we determine that both objects have spectra…
We present the serendipitous discovery of z=4.05 molecular gas CO emission lines with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer coincident with GN20 and GN20.2, two luminous submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey North field (GOODS-N). These are among the most distant submillimeter-selected galaxies reliably identified through CO emission and also some of the most luminous known. In terms of CO to bolometric luminosities, stellar mass and star formation rates (SFRs), these newly discovered z>4 SMGs are similar to z~1.5-3 SMGs studied to date. These z~4 SMGs …
We report signal-to-noise ratio SNR ~ 100 optical spectra for four DA white dwarf stars acquired with the GMOS spectrograph of the 8m Gemini north telescope. These stars have 18<g<19 and are around Teff ~ 12000 K, were the hydrogen lines are close to maximum. Our purpose is to test if the effective temperatures and surface gravities derived from the relatively low signal-to-noise ratio (<SNR> ~ 21) optical spectra acquired by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey through model atmosphere fitting are trustworthy. Our spectra range from 3800A to 6000A, therefore including H beta to H9. The H8 line was on…
We present Gemini optical spectroscopy of 23 young star clusters in NGC3256. We find that the cluster ages range are from few Myr to ~150 Myr. All these clusters are relatively massive (2--40)x 10^{5} \msun$ and appear to be of roughly 1.5 \zo metallicity. The majority of the clusters in our sample follow the same rotation curve as the gas and hence were presumably formed in the molecular-gas disk. However, a western subsample of five clusters has velocities that deviate significantly from the gas rotation curve. These clusters may either belong to the second spiral galaxy of the merger or may…
In this paper we use the complementary imaging capabilities of Spitzer (sensitivity) and Gemini-South/T-ReCS (spatial resolution) to study the mid-IR properties of local (d < 75Mpc) LIRGs. The T-ReCS 8-10micron imaging observations of LIRGs have allowed us to spatially resolve the nuclear emission (star formation and/or AGN) and that of HII regions in the central 3-7kpc regions of LIRGs. From the comparison of the 8micron/Pa-alpha ratios of the integrated vs. resolved HII regions of LIRGs, we infer the existence of an 8micron diffuse component, not directly related to the ionizing stars, that …
We introduce a new empirical function for modeling the spectral energy distributions of galaxies. We apply it to a sample of 590 galaxies in the region of the HDF with $z < 1.5$ using multi-color photometry with wide wavelength coverage combined with spectroscopic redshifts from our 93% complete R-selected redshift survey there. We find the following: As expected, galaxies with strong signs of recent star formation (i.e. those which show emission lines) have bluer continua in both the rest frame UV and the optical/near-infrared. The redder galaxies tend to be more luminous. The SEDs of activel…
We present H- and K-band spectroscopy of OB and Wolf-Rayet (WR) members of the Milky Way cluster 1806-20 (G10.0-0.3), to obtain a revised cluster distance of relevance to the 2004 giant flare from the SGR 1806-20 magnetar. From GNIRS spectroscopy obtained with Gemini South, four candidate OB stars are confirmed as late O/early B supergiants, while we support previous mid WN and late WC classifications for two WR stars. Based upon an absolute Ks-band magnitude calibration for B supergiants and WR stars, and near-IR photometry from NIRI at Gemini North plus archival VLT/ISAAC datasets, we obtain…
We present spectroscopic evidence from the Gemini Deep Deep Survey (GDDS) for a significant population of color-selected red galaxies at 1.3 < z < 2.2 whose integrated light is dominated by evolved stars. Unlike radio-selected objects, the z > 1.5 old galaxies have a sky density > 0.1 per sq. arcmin. Conservative age estimates for 20 galaxies with z > 1.3; <z> = 1.49, give a median age of 1.2 Gyr and <z_f> = 2.4. One quarter of the galaxies have inferred z_f > 4. Models restricted to abundances less than or equal to solar give median ages and z_f of 2.3 Gyr and 3.3, respectively. These galaxie…
We have analysed high resolution adaptive optics (AO) science demonstration data of the young, massive stellar cluster Arches near the Galactic Center, obtained with the Gemini North telescope in combination with the University of Hawai'i AO system Hokupa'a. The AO H and K' photometry is calibrated using HST/NICMOS observations in the equivalent filters F160W and F205W obtained by Figer et al. (1999). ... After a thorough technical comparison, the Gemini and HST data are used in combination to study the spatial distribution of stellar masses in the Arches cluster. ... A strong colour gradient …
We present new spectroscopic observations of the stellar cluster population of region B in the prototype starburst galaxy M82 obtained with the Gillett Gemini-North 8.1-metre telescope. By coupling the spectroscopy with UBVI photometry acquired with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we derive ages, extinctions and radial velocities for seven young massive clusters (YMCs) in region B. We find the clusters to have ages between 70 and 200 Myr and velocities in the range 230 to 350 km/s, while extinctions Av vary between ~1-2.5 mag. We also find evidence of…
We present stellar mass measurements for a sample of 36 Luminous Compact Blue Galaxies (LCBGs) at redshifts z = 0.4-1.2 in the Flanking Fields around the Hubble Deep Field North. The technique is based on fitting a two-component galaxy population model to multi-broadband photometry. Best-fit models are found to be largely independent on the assumed values for the IMF and the metallicity of the stellar populations, but are sensitive to the amount of extinction and the extinction law adopted. On average, the best-fit model corresponds to a LMC extinction law with E(B-V)=0.5. Stellar mass estimat…
We present the number counts of Ks-band selected high redshift galaxy populations such as extremely red objects (EROs), B, z & K -band selected galaxies (BzKs) and distant red galaxies (DRGs) in the AKARI NEP field. The final catalogue contains 308 EROs (Ks<19.0 ; 54 percent are dusty star-forming EROs and the rest are passive old EROs), 137 star-forming BzKs and 38 passive old BzKs (Ks<19.0) and 64 DRGs (Ks<18.6). We also produce individual component source counts for both the dusty star-forming and passive populations. We compare the observed number counts of the high redshift passively evol…
We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to the proposed ultra-compact binary system V407 Vul (=RX J1914.4+2456). Our Gemini spectra resolve the 9.48 minute periodicity that has previously been reported for this source. We find that the optical counterpart is dominated by a reddened late-type spectrum of type G9V and contains solely unresolved absorption features. No radial velocity signatures exceeding 10 km/s could be detected on periods from minutes to hours. Using interstellar extinction estimates, we derive a distance to the G9 star of 1.1-3.5 kpc. In addition to t…
We present two-dimensional (2D) mapping of the stellar velocity field within the inner 5 arcsec of six nearby active galaxies, using spectra obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the GMOS instrument at the Gemini North telescope. The spatial resolution range from 20 to about 180 pc, and the observed field of view covers a few hundred parsecs around the nuclei. The Calcium II triplet absorption features at ~ 8500 A were used to measure the stellar radial velocities and velocity dispersions (sigma). A simple kinematical model assuming a purely rotating system with circular orbits in a plane w…
We present new 2.2 micron diffraction-limited images from the W. M. Keck 10 m and Gemini 8 m telescopes of the cool Galactic Center sources, IRS 1W, 5, 8, 10W, and 21 along with new proper motions for IRS 1W, 10W and 21. These observations were carried out to test the bowshock hypothesis presented by Tanner et al. as an alternative to a very recent (10^4 yr) epoch of star formation within the tidal stream of gas and dust known as the Northern Arm. Resolved asymmetric structure is detected in all the sources, with bowshock morphologies associated with IRS 1W, 5, 8 and 10W. For IRS 1W and 10W, t…
We present a catalog of 30 QSOs and their spectra, in the square degree of sky centered on the northern Hubble Deep Field. These QSOs were selected by multicolor photometry and subsequently confirmed with spectroscopy. They range in magnitude from 17.6 < B < 21.0 and in redshift from 0.44 < z < 2.98. We also include in the catalog an AGN with redshift z=0.135. Together, these objects comprise a new grid of absorption probes which can be used to study the correlation between luminous galaxies, non-luminous halos and Lyman-alpha absorbers along the line of sight toward the Hubble Deep Field.
[Abridged] We present Gemini-North GMOS/IFU observations of a young star cluster (cluster 10) and its environment near the centre of the dwarf irregular starburst galaxy NGC 1569. This forms part of a larger and on-going study of the formation and collimation mechanisms of galactic winds, including three additional IFU pointings in NGC 1569 covering the base of the galactic wind which are analysed in a companion paper. The good spatial- and spectral-resolution of these GMOS/IFU observations, covering 4740-6860 A, allow us to probe the interactions between clusters and their environments on sma…
We present the results of the Gemini Deep Planet Survey, a near-infrared adaptive optics search for giant planets and brown dwarfs around nearby young stars. The observations were obtained with the Altair adaptive optics system at the Gemini North telescope and angular differential imaging was used to suppress the speckle noise of the central star. Detection limits for the 85 stars observed are presented, along with a list of all faint point sources detected around them. Typically, the observations are sensitive to angular separations beyond 0.5" with 5-sigma contrast sensitivities in magnitud…
We present new techiques for improving the efficiency of supernova (SN) classification at high redshift using 64 candidates observed at Gemini North and South during the first year of the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). The SNLS is an ongoing five year project with the goal of measuring the equation of state of Dark Energy by discovering and following over 700 high-redshift SNe Ia using data from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey. We achieve an improvement in the SN Ia spectroscopic confirmation rate: at Gemini 71% of candidates are now confirmed as SNe Ia, compared to 54% using…
Recent studies have shown that K-luminous galaxies at 2<z<2.5 have high Halpha line widths and high [NII]/Halpha ratios. If these lines arise from photo-ionization by massive stars in HII regions these results imply that massive, metal rich galaxies exist at high redshift. Here we investigate the ionization mechanism in a galaxy with Ks=19.1 and z=2.225 in the Chandra Deep Field South, using the new Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS). GNIRS' cross-dispersed mode gives simultaneous access to the entire 1-2.5 micron wavelength range, allowing accurate measurements of line ratios of distan…
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We search 149 moderate resolution background quasar spectra, from Gemini, Keck, the MMT, and the SDSS to survey Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) and Damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) in the vicinity of 1.8 < z < 4.0 luminous foreground quasars. A sample of 27 new quasar-absorber pairs is uncovered with column densities, 17.2 < log (N_HI/cm^2) < 20.9, and transverse (proper) distances of 22 kpc/h < R < 1.7 Mpc/h, from the foreground quasars. If they emit…
We present a datacube covering the central 10 arcsec of the archetypal active galaxy NGC 1068 over a wavelength range 4200 to 5400 Angstrom. obtained during the commissioning of the integral field unit (IFU) of the Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph (GMOS) installed on the Gemini-North telescope. The datacube shows a complex emission line morphology in the [OIII] doublet and Hbeta line. To describe this structure phenomenologically we construct an atlas of velocity components derived from multiple Gaussian component fits to the emission lines. The atlas contains many features which cannot be read…
