We present Gemini near-infrared spectroscopic observations of six luminous quasars at z=5.8$\sim$6.3. Five of them were observed using Gemini-South/GNIRS, which provides a simultaneous wavelength coverage of 0.9--2.5 $μ$m in cross dispersion mode. The other source was observed in K band with Gemini-North/NIRI. We calculate line strengths for all detected emission lines and use their ratios to estimate gas metallicity in the broad-line regions of the quasars. The metallicity is found to be supersolar with a typical value of $\sim$4 Z_{\sun}, and a comparison with low-redshift observations shows no strong evolution in metallicity up to z$\sim$6. The FeII/MgII ratio of the quasars is 4.9+/-1.4, consistent with low-redshift measurements. We estimate central BH masses of 10^9 to 10^{10} M_{\sun} and Eddington luminosity ratios of order unity. We identify two MgII $λλ$2796,2803 absorbers with rest equivalent width W_0^{\lambda2796}>1 Åat 2.2<z<3 and three MgII absorbers with W_0^{\lambda2796}>1.5 Åat z>3 in the spectra, with the two most distant absorbers at z=4.8668 and 4.8823, respectively. The redshift number densities (dN/dz) of MgII absorbers with W_0^{\lambda2796}>1.5 Åare consistent with no cosmic evolution up to z>4.
We study the cross-correlation between 716 MgII quasar absorption systems and about 100,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 in the redshift range 0.4<z<0.8. The MgII systems were selected to have 2796 & 2803 rest-frame equivalent widths greater than 1.0 Åand identifications confirmed by the FeII 2600 or MgI 2852 lines. Over co-moving scales 0.2--13/h Mpc, the MgII--LRG cross-correlation has an amplitude 0.69+/-0.09 times that of the LRG--LRG auto-correlation. Since LRGs have halo-masses of 10^{13} \msun, this strong cross-correlation impli…
We study the cross-correlation between 212 MgII quasar absorption systems and \~20,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 in the redshift range 0.4<z<0.8. The MgII systems were selected to have 2796 & 2803 rest-frame equivalent widths >=1.0 Angstrom and identifications confirmed by the FeII 2600 or MgI 2852 lines. Over comoving scales 0.05--13 h^-1 Mpc, the MgII--LRG cross-correlation has an amplitude 0.69+/-0.09 times that of the LRG--LRG auto-correlation. Since LRGs have halo-masses greater than 3.5 x 10^12 solar masses for M_R<-21, this re…
We present results from analysis of spectra from a sample of ~900 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. These objects were selected for their intermediate redshift (1.2<z<1.8), placing MgII and UV FeII in the optical band pass, relatively narrow MgII lines, and moderately good signal-to-noise-ratio spectra. Using a maximum likelihood analysis, we discovered that there is a significant dispersion in the FeII/MgII ratios in the sample. Using simulations, we demonstrate that this range, and corresponding correlation between FeII equivalent width and FeII/MgII ratio, are primarily a consequen…
A new and mysterious class of object has been revealed by the detection of numerous weak MgII doublets in quasar absorption line spectra. The properties of these objects will be reviewed. They are not in close proximity to luminous galaxies, yet they have metallicities close to the solar value; they are likely to be self-enriched. A significant fraction of the weak MgII absorbers are constrained to be less than 10 parsecs in size, yet they present a large cross-section for absorption, indicating that there are more than a million times more of them than there are luminous galaxies. They could …
We present the first use of the Gemini North laser guide star adaptive optics (LGS AO) system and an integral field unit (IFU) to measure the stellar velocity dispersion of the host of a luminous quasar. The quasar PG1426+015 (z=0.086) was observed with the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) on the 8m Gemini North telescope in the H-band as part of the Science Verification phase of the new ALTAIR LGS AO system. The NIFS IFU and LGS AO are well suited for host studies of luminous quasars because one can achieve a large ratio of host to quasar light. We have measured the stellar ve…
We present a method for obtaining accurate black hole (BH) mass estimates from the MgII emission line in active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Employing the large database of AGN measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) presented by Shen et al., we find that AGNs in the redshift range 0.3-0.9, for which a given object can have both H-beta and MgII line widths measured, display a modest but correctable discrepancy in MgII-based masses that correlates with the Eddington ratio. We use the SDSS database to estimate the probability distribution of the true (i.e., H-beta-based) mass given a me…
We consider the evolution of strong (W_r(2796) > 0.3A) MgII absorbers, most of which are closely related to luminous galaxies. Using 20 high resolution quasar spectra from the VLT/UVES public archive, we examine 33 strong MgII absorbers in the redshift range 0.3 < z < 2.5. We compare and supplement this sample with 23 strong MgII absorbers at 0.4 < z < 1.4 observed previously with HIRES/Keck. We find that neither equivalent width nor kinematic spread (the optical depth weighted second moment of velocity) of MgII2796 evolve. However, the kinematic spread is sensitive to the highest velocity com…
High resolution optical (HIRES/Keck) and UV (STIS/HST) spectra, covering a large range of chemical transitions, are analyzed for three single-cloud weak MgII absorption systems along the line of sight toward the quasar PG 1634+706. Weak MgII absorption lines in quasar spectra trace metal-enriched environments that are rarely closely associated with the most luminous galaxies (>0.05L^*). The two weak MgII systems at z=0.81 and z=0.90 are constrained to have >=solar metallicity, while the metallicity of the z=0.65 system is not as well-constrained, but is consistent with >1/10th solar. These wea…
We measure the mean halo-mass of z=0.5 MgII absorbers using the cross-correlation (over co-moving scales 0.05-13h^{-1}Mpc) between 1806 MgII quasar absorption systems and ~250,000 Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs), both selected from the SDSS DR3. The MgII systems have rest-frame equivalent widths W_r(2796)>=0.3A. From the ratio of the MgII-LRG cross-correlation to the LRG-LRG auto-correlation, we find that the bias ratio between MgII absorbers and LRGs is 0.65+/-0.08, which implies that the absorber host-galaxies have a mean halo-mass 20-40 times smaller than that of the LRGs; the MgII absorbers h…
We present spatially resolved spectroscopic images of the gravitationally lensed QSO 2237+0305 taken with the GMOS Integral Field Unit (IFU) on the Gemini North telescope. These observations have the best spatial resolution of any IFU observations of this object to date and include the redshifted CIII] and MgII QSO broad lines. Unlike Mediavilla et al. 1998, we find no evidence for an arc of resolved broad line emission in either the CIII] or MgII lines. We calculate the image flux ratios of both the integrated emission lines and the surrounding continua. The flux ratios of the CIII] and MgII …
We present the following results of photoionization modeling of six MgII-selected absorption systems, at redshift 0.5 < z 0.9, along lines of sight toward three quasars: PG 1241+176, PG 1248+401, and PG 1317+274. These are part of a larger sample of ~20 MgII absorbers at intermediate redshift, that facilitates a survey of the properties of, and processes active in, the multiple phases of gas, both in and outside of galaxies. We present new high resolution ultraviolet spectra from HST/STIS as well as high resolution optical spectra obtained with HIRES/Keck. Together, these spectra allow simulta…
We report the discovery of a confirmed supernova (SN) and a supernova-candidate in near-infrared images from the ALTAIR/NIRI adaptive optics system on the Gemini-North Telescope and NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. The Gemini images were obtained as part of a near-infrared K-band search for highly-obscured SNe in the nuclear regions of luminous infrared galaxies. SN 2008cs apparent in the Gemini images is the first SN discovered using laser guide star adaptive optics. It is located at 1500 pc projected distance from the nucleus of the luminous infrared galaxy IRAS 17138-1017. The SN lumin…
We measure the width of the MgII $\lambda2799$ line in quasar spectra from the SDSS, 2QZ and 2SLAQ surveys and, by invoking an unnormalised virial mass estimator, relate the scatter in line width to the scatter in mass in the underlying black hole population. We find conclusive evidence for a trend such that there is less scatter in line width, and hence black hole mass, in more luminous objects. However, the most luminous objects in our sample show such a low degree of scatter in line width that, when combined with measures for the intrinsic scatter in the radius-luminosity relation for the b…
We investigated a sample of 15 luminous high-redshift quasars (3.3 < z < 5.1) to measure the mass of their super-massive black holes (SMBH) and compare, for the first time, results based on CIV, MgII, and Hbeta emission lines at high-redshifts. Assuming gravitationally bound orbits as dominant broad-line region gas motion, we determine black hole masses in the range of M_bh = 2 times 10^8 M_sun up to M_bh = 4 times 10^10 M_sun. While the black hole mass estimates based on CIV and Hbeta agree well, MgII typically indicates a factor of $\sim 5 \times$ lower SMBH masses. A flatter slope of the Hb…
g', r', and i' images obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) on Gemini North are used to investigate the metallicity and stellar content of the M31 dwarf spheroidal companion galaxy And V. Red giant branch (RGB) stars are traced out to radii in excess of 126 arcsec from the galaxy center, indicating that And V extends over a diameter approaching 1 kpc. The mean g'-i' color of the RGB does not change with radius. Based on the slope of the RGB in the (i', g'-i') color-magnitude diagram we conclude that [Fe/H] = -2.2 +/- 0.1. This metallicity is lower than earlier estimates, an…
We consider geometries and possible physical models for weak low ionization absorbers based on the relative incidence of low and high ionization absorption systems. We found a total of 16 metal-line systems, with low and/or high ionization absorption detected in our survey of weak low ionization absorption systems from the archive of HST/STIS data. The weak low ionization absorbers trace an abundant population of metal-enriched regions (close to solar metallicity). Generally, models show that these systems have a ~10pc region of higher density gas and a ~1kpc region of lower density phase of h…
We present r'- or i'-band WIYN images of the fields of 15 Sloan Digital Sky Survey quasars that have spectra exhibiting intervening MgII absorption-line systems with rest equivalent widths 2.7A \le REW \le 6.0A and redshifts 0.42 < z_{abs} < 0.84. Such systems are rare and exhibit projected absorption velocity spreads in excess of \approx 300-650 km/s. Approximately 60% are expected to be damped Lyαsystems. In each of our fields we detect at least one galaxy that, if at the absorption redshift, would have impact parameter b \lesssim 40 kpc and luminosity L \gtrsim 0.3 L*. We measure a signific…
(Abridged) We present a comparative analysis of the galaxy emission and QSO absorption kinematics of a z~0.7450 MgII system and its candidate absorbing galaxy (G5) located 3.86 arcsecs (28.3 h-1 kpc) from the QSO. We have obtained a spectrum of the galaxy candidate, previously identified as a luminous edge-on disk, and detect the [OII] 3727 A doublet at a systemic redshift of z =0.7450. From slit spectroscopy of this galaxy, we find v_rot ~> 210 km/s, and possibly as large as 350 km/s. Plotted on the same velocity scale, the systemic redshift of the galaxy coincides with the center of the abso…
We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of stellar populations in the X-ray-luminous cluster of galaxies RXJ0142.0+2131 at z=0.280. This paper analyses the results of high signal-to-noise spectroscopy, as well as g'-, r'-, and i'-band imaging, using the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini North. Of 43 spectroscopic targets, we find 30 cluster members over a range in color. Central velocity dispersions and absorption-line strengths for lines in the range 3700A < lambda_rest < 5800A are derived for cluster members, and are compared with a low-redshift sample of cluster galaxies, …
In this paper we use the complementary imaging capabilities of Spitzer (sensitivity) and Gemini-South/T-ReCS (spatial resolution) to study the mid-IR properties of local (d < 75Mpc) LIRGs. The T-ReCS 8-10micron imaging observations of LIRGs have allowed us to spatially resolve the nuclear emission (star formation and/or AGN) and that of HII regions in the central 3-7kpc regions of LIRGs. From the comparison of the 8micron/Pa-alpha ratios of the integrated vs. resolved HII regions of LIRGs, we infer the existence of an 8micron diffuse component, not directly related to the ionizing stars, that …
We present K-band imaging of fields around 30 strong CaII absorption line systems, at 0.7<z<1.1, three of which are confirmed Damped Lyman-alpha systems. A significant excess of galaxies is found within 6"0 (~50kpc) from the absorber line-of-sight. The excess galaxies are preferentially luminous compared to the population of field galaxies. A model in which field galaxies possess a luminosity-dependent cross-section for CaII absorption of the form (L/L*)^0.7 reproduces the observations well. The luminosity-dependent cross-section for the CaII absorbers appears to be significantly stronger than…
We present diffraction-limited (FWHM ~ 0.3arcsec) Gemini/T-ReCS mid-infrared (MIR: N-band or narrow-band at 8.7micron) imaging of four Luminous Infrared Galaxies (LIRGs) drawn from a representative local sample. The MIR emission in the central few kpc is strikingly similar to that traced by Pa-alpha, and generally consists of bright nuclear emission and several compact circumnuclear and/or extranuclear HII regions. The central MIR emission is dominated by these powerful HII regions, consistent with the majority of AGN in this local sample of LIRGs contributing a minor part of the MIR emission.…
We have observed a sample of 22 luminous quasars, in the range 2.0<z<2.5, at 1.6 microns with the near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph FSPEC on the Multiple Mirror Telescope. Our sample contains 13 radio-loud and 9 radio-quiet objects. We have measured the systemic redshifts z_(sys) directly from the strong [O III]5007 line emitted from the narrow-line-region. From the same spectra, we have found that the non-resonance broad H$β$ lines have a systematic mean redward shift of 520+/-80 km/s with respect to systemic. Such a shift was not found in our identical analysis of the low-redshift sample of B…
The spectrum of the low-redshift QSO PG0953+415 shows two strong, intervening O VI absorption systems. To study the nature of these absorbers, we have used the Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph to conduct a deep spectroscopic galaxy redshift survey in the 5' x 5' field centered on the QSO. This survey is fully complete for r' < 19.7 and is 73% complete for r' < 21.0. We find three galaxies at the redshift of the higher-z O VI system (z = 0.14232) including a galaxy at projected distance rho = 155 kpc. We find no galaxies in the Gemini field at the redshift of the lower-z O VI absorber (z = 0.068…
We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the optical counterpart to the proposed ultra-compact binary system V407 Vul (=RX J1914.4+2456). Our Gemini spectra resolve the 9.48 minute periodicity that has previously been reported for this source. We find that the optical counterpart is dominated by a reddened late-type spectrum of type G9V and contains solely unresolved absorption features. No radial velocity signatures exceeding 10 km/s could be detected on periods from minutes to hours. Using interstellar extinction estimates, we derive a distance to the G9 star of 1.1-3.5 kpc. In addition to t…
We have identified galaxies near two quasars which are at the redshift of damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems in the UV spectra of the quasars. Both galaxies are actively forming stars. One galaxy has a luminosity close to the break in the local galaxy luminosity function, L*, the other is significantly fainter than L* and appears to be interacting with a nearby companion. Despite the strong selection effects favoring spectroscopic identification of the most luminous DLA galaxies, many of the spectroscopically-identified DLA galaxies in the literature are sub-L*, suggesting that the majority of t…
The red quasar 3C 212 (z=1.049) is one of the most distant and most luminous AGN which has shown evidence of an X-ray warm absorber. In order to further investigate this unusual quasar, we used Chandra/ACIS-S to observe 3C 212 for 19.5 ksec, resulting in a net detection of ~4000 counts. The Chandra data confirm the presence of an excess absorbing column N_H ~ 4 x 10^21 cm^-2 at the quasar redshift, but we find no compelling evidence for a warm absorber. Using both the Chandra and archival ROSAT PSPC data, we obtain very good fits for both a partially covered neutral absorber and a low-ionizati…
Recent studies have shown that K-luminous galaxies at 2<z<2.5 have high Halpha line widths and high [NII]/Halpha ratios. If these lines arise from photo-ionization by massive stars in HII regions these results imply that massive, metal rich galaxies exist at high redshift. Here we investigate the ionization mechanism in a galaxy with Ks=19.1 and z=2.225 in the Chandra Deep Field South, using the new Gemini Near Infrared Spectrograph (GNIRS). GNIRS' cross-dispersed mode gives simultaneous access to the entire 1-2.5 micron wavelength range, allowing accurate measurements of line ratios of distan…
With close pairs of quasars at different redshifts, a background quasar sightline can be used to study a foreground quasar's environment in absorption. We search 149 moderate resolution background quasar spectra, from Gemini, Keck, the MMT, and the SDSS to survey Lyman Limit Systems (LLSs) and Damped Ly-alpha systems (DLAs) in the vicinity of 1.8 < z < 4.0 luminous foreground quasars. A sample of 27 new quasar-absorber pairs is uncovered with column densities, 17.2 < log (N_HI/cm^2) < 20.9, and transverse (proper) distances of 22 kpc/h < R < 1.7 Mpc/h, from the foreground quasars. If they emit…
We present a measurement of metallicity in the Galactic center Quintuplet Cluster made using quantitative spectral analysis of two Luminous Blue Variables (LBVs). The analysis employs line-blanketed NLTE wind/atmosphere models fit to high-resolution near-infrared spectra containing lines of H, HeI, SiII, MgII, and FeII. We are able to break the H/He ratio vs. mass-loss rate degeneracy found in other LBVs and to obtain robust estimates of the He content of both objects. Our results indicate solar iron abundance and roughly twice solar abundance in the alpha-elements. These results are discussed…
This work explores in detail the relation between the 8 micron and the Pa-alpha emissions for 122 HII regions identified in a sample of 10 low-z LIRGs with nearly constant metallicity (12 + log (O/H) ~ 8.8). We use Gemini/T-ReCS high-spatial resolution (<~ 0.4" ~ 120 pc for the average distance of 60 Mpc of our sample) mid-infrared imaging (at 8.7 micron or 10.3 micron) together with HST/NICMOS continuum and Pa-alpha images. The LIRG HII regions extend the L_8micron vs. L_Pa-alpha relation found for HII knots in the high-metallicity SINGS galaxies by about two orders of magnitude to higher lum…
Using Gemini QuickStart infrared observations of the central 22" of M33, we analyze the stellar populations in this controversial region. Based on the slope of the giant branch we estimate the mean metallicity to be -0.26+/-0.27, and from the luminosities of the most luminous stars, we estimate that there were two bursts of star formation ~2 and ~0.5 Gyr ago. We show that the stellar luminosity function not only has a different bright end cutoff, but also a significantly different slope than that of the Galactic bulge, and suggest that this difference is due to the young stellar component in M…
We report near-infrared (primarily H-band) adaptive optics (AO) imaging with the Gemini-N and Subaru Telescopes, of a representative sample of 32 nearby (z<0.3) QSOs selected from the Palomar-Green (PG) Bright Quasar Survey (BQS), in order to investigate the properties of the host galaxies. 2D modeling and visual inspection of the images shows that ~36% of the hosts are ellipticals, \~39% contain a prominent disk component, and ~25% are of undetermined type. 30% show obvious signs of disturbance. The mean M_H(host) = -24.82 (2.1L_H*), with a range -23.5 to -26.5 (~0.63 to 10 L_H*). At <L_H*, a…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has confirmed the existence of populations of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars with various unusual properties. We present and discuss twenty-three such objects and consider the implications of their wide range of properties for models of BAL outflows and quasars in general. We have discovered one BAL quasar with a record number of absorption lines. Two other similarly complex objects with many narrow troughs show broad MgII absorption extending longward of their systemic host galaxy redshifts. This can be explained as absorption of an extended continuum source …
We present near-infrared spectroscopic observations for a sample of ten optically faint luminous infrared galaxies (R-[24]> 14) using Keck NIRSPEC and Gemini NIRI. The sample is selected from a 24 micron Spitzer MIPS imaging survey of the NDWFS Bootes field. We measure accurate redshifts in the range 1.3<z<3.4. Based on either emission line widths or line diagnostics, we find that all ten galaxies harbor luminous AGN. Seven sources are type I AGN, exhibiting broad (>1900 km/s) Halpha or Hbeta emission lines; the remaining three are type II AGN. Given their large mid-IR luminosities and faint o…
Near-infrared images of the luminous, high redshift (z=2.1108) radio loud quasar 4C+09.17 reveal a complex structure. The quasar (K=15.76 mag) is surrounded by three "companion" objects having 17.9< K < 20.2 mag at radii of 1.7" < r < 2.9", as well as bright, diffuse emission. The brightest companion has a redshift of z=0.8384 (Lehnert & Becker 1997) and its optical-infrared colors (Lehnert et al. 1997) are consistent with a late-type spiral galaxy at this redshift with a luminosity of about 2L*. This object is likely the galaxy responsible for the strongest MgII absorption line system seen in…
We study the distribution of Eddington luminosity ratios, L_bol/L_edd, of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) discovered in the AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey (AGES). We combine H-beta, MgII, and CIV line widths with continuum luminosities to estimate black hole (BH) masses in 407 AGNs, covering the redshift range z~0.3-4 and the bolometric luminosity range L_bol~10^45-10^47 erg/s. The sample consists of X-ray or mid-infrared (24 micron) point sources with optical magnitude R<=21.5 mag and optical emission line spectra characteristic of AGNs. For the range of luminosity and redshift probed by AGES,…
We assess the feasibility of detecting star formation in damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs) at z>1 through near-infrared spectroscopy using the forthcoming integral field units on 8m-class telescopes. Although their relation to galaxies is not well established, high-z DLAs contain most of the neutral gas in the Universe, and this reservoir is depleted with time - presumably through star formation. Line emission should be an indicator of star formation activity, but searches based on Lyman-alpha are unreliable because of the selective extinction of this resonant UV line. Using more robust lines …
We report the discovery of two iron-group enhanced high-metallicity Mg II absorbers in a search through 28 Lyman Alpha forest clouds along the PKS 0454+039 sight line. Based upon our survey and the measured redshift number densities of W_r(MgII) <= 0.3 A absorbers and Lyman Alpha absorbers at z ~ 1, we suggest that roughly 5% of Lyman Alpha absorbers at z < 1 will exhibit "weak" Mg II absorption to a 5-sigma W_r(2796) detection limit of 0.02 A. The two discovered absorbers, at redshifts z = 0.6248 and z = 0.9315, have W_r(Lya) = 0.33 and 0.15 A, respectively. Based upon photoionization modelin…
Luminous extended emission-line regions (EELRs) on kpc scales surround a substantial fraction of steep-spectrum radio-loud QSOs. Although their existence has been known for over three decades, there are still major uncertainties on the physical processes responsible for their complex morphology and kinematics. We are obtaining deep integral field spectroscopy for a sample of EELRs around QSOs at z<0.5 with the Integral Field Unit (IFU) of the GMOS on the Gemini North telescope, aiming at extracting accurate kinematics of the EELRs, measuring important physical parameters (e.g., density, temper…
