We measure the width of the MgII $\lambda2799$ line in quasar spectra from the SDSS, 2QZ and 2SLAQ surveys and, by invoking an unnormalised virial mass estimator, relate the scatter in line width to the scatter in mass in the underlying black hole population. We find conclusive evidence for a trend such that there is less scatter in line width, and hence black hole mass, in more luminous objects.
However, the most luminous objects in our sample show such a low degree of scatter in line width that, when combined with measures for the intrinsic scatter in the radius-luminosity relation for the broad-line region in active galaxies, an inconsistency arises in the virial technique for estimating black hole masses. This analysis implies that, at least for the most luminous quasars, either there is little-to-no intrinsic scatter in the radius-luminosity relation or the MgII broad emission line region is not totally dominated by virial velocities.
Finally we exploit the measured scatter in line widths to constrain models for the velocity field of the broad-line region. We show that the lack of scatter in broad line-widths for luminous quasars is inconsistent with a pure planar/disk-like geometry for the broad-line region... (abridged)
The lifetime t_Q of the luminous phase of quasars is constrained by current observations to be between 10^6 and 10^8 years, but is otherwise unkown. We model the quasar luminosity function in detail in the optical and X-ray bands using the Press-Schechter formalism, and show that the expected clustering of quasars depends strongly on their assumed lifetime. We quantify this dependence, and find that existing measurements of the correlation length of quasars are consistent with the range 10^6 < t_Q < 10^8 years. We then show that future measurements of the power spectrum of quasars out to z=3, …
Absorption spectra of high redshift quasars suggest that the reionisation of cosmic hydrogen was complete near z~6. The dominant sources of ionising photons responsible for this reionisation are generally thought to be stars and quasars. In this paper we make a quantitative estimate of the relative contributions made by these sources. Our approach is to compute the evolution of the post overlap ionising background radiation by combining semi-analytic descriptions of reionisation in a clumpy medium with a model for the quasar luminosity function. Our overall model has two free parameters, the s…
By comparing the results of numerical microlensing simulations to the observed long-term variability of quasars, strong upper limits on the cosmological density of compact objects in the mass range 0.01 to 0.0001 solar masses may be imposed. Using recently developed methods to better approximate the amplification of large sources, we investigate in what way the constraints are affected by assumptions concerning the size of the optical continuum-emitting region of quasars in the currently favored (Omega_M=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7) cosmology.
Using quasar spectra from the SDSS survey, we constrain the possibility of photon-axion oscillations as a source of dimming of high redshift objects. Such a process has been suggested as an explanation of the apparent faintness of distant Type Ia supernovae. For most combinations of magnetic field strengths and plasma densities along the line of sight, large beam attenuations in broad band filters would also lead to significant differential attenuation, not observed in the quasar sample. However, this conservative study does not exclude the possibility of 0.1 mag dimming of Type Ia supernovae …
Recent discoveries by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) of four bright redshift z=6 quasars could constrain the mechanism by which the supermassive black holes powering these sources are assembled. Here we compute the probability that the fluxes of the quasars are strongly amplified by gravitational lensing, and therefore the likelihood that the black hole masses are overestimated when they are inferred assuming Eddington luminosities. The poorly-constrained shape of the intrinsic quasar luminosity function (LF) at redshift z=6 results in a large range of possible lensing probabilities. If t…
Cosmologically distributed compact dark matter objects with masses in the approximate range of 0.001 to 1 solar masses can amplify the continuum emission of a quasar through gravitational microlensing, without appreciably affecting its broad emission lines. This will produce a statistical excess of weak-lined quasars in the observed distribution of spectral line equivalent widths, an effect that scales with the amount of compact dark matter in the universe. Using the large flux-limited sample of quasar spectra from the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), I demonstrate th…
Using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations we measure the mean transmitted flux in the Lyman alpha forest for quasar sightlines that pass near a foreground quasar. We find that the trend of absorption with pixel-quasar separation distance can be fitted using a simple power law form including the usual correlation function parameters r_{0} and γso that (<F(r)> = \sum exp(-tau_eff*(1+(r/r_{0})^(-γ)))). From the simulations we find the relation between r_{0} and quasar mass and formulate this as a way to estimate quasar host dark matter halo masses, quantifying uncertainties due to cosmological …
By comparing the results from numerical microlensing simulations to the observed long-term variability of quasars, strong upper limits on the cosmological density of compact objects in the 0.0001-1 solar mass range may in principle be imposed. Here, this method is generalized from the Einstein-de Sitter universe to the currently favored Omega_M=0.3, Omega_Lambda=0.7 cosmology and applied to the latest observational samples. We show that the use of high-redshift quasars from variability-selected samples has the potential to substantially improve current constraints on compact objects in this ma…
We propose a proper method to measure the size of the narrow line region (NLR) in distant quasars. The apparent angular size of the NLR is, in general, too small to resolve technically. However, it is possible to map the NLR if with gravitational lensing. In our method, we directly compare the observed image of the NLR with the expected lensed images of the NLR for various source sizes and lens models. Seeking the best fit image via the comparison procedures, we can obtain the best-fit size and the best-fit lens model. We apply this method to the two-dimensional spectroscopic data of a famous …
We study the evolution of the ionization state of the IGM at the end of the reionization epoch using spectra of a sample of nineteen quasars at 5.74<z<6.42 discovered in the SDSS. Three methods are used to trace IGM properties: (a) the evolution of the Gunn-Peterson optical depth in the Ly alpha, beta, and gamma; (b) the distribution of dark absorption gaps, and (c) the size of HII regions around quasars. We find that the evolution of the IGM accelerated at z>5.7: the optical depth evolution changes from tau ~ (1+z)^{4.3} to (1+z)^{>11}, and the average length of dark gaps with tau>3.5 increase…
We present graphically the results of several thousand photoionization calculations of broad emission line clouds in quasars, spanning seven orders of magnitude in hydrogen ionizing flux and particle density. The equivalent widths of 42 quasar emission lines are presented as contours in the particle density - ionizing flux plane for a typical incident continuum shape, solar chemical abundances, and cloud column density of $N(H) = 10^{23} cm^{-2}$. Results are similarly given for a small subset of emission lines for two other column densities ($10^{22} cm^{-2}$ and $10^{24} cm^{-2}$), five othe…
Statistical properties of gas absorption in high redshift quasars such as power spectrum and bispectrum allow one to determine the evolution of structure over the redshift range 2<z<4. Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) will measure around 10,000 quasar spectra in this redshift range and will allow one to determine the growth factor with a few percent accuracy. This allows one to extend the studies of dark energy to higher redshift and determine the presence of dark energy if Omega_de>0.1-0.2 at z>2. In combination with low redshift studies one can place useful limits on the time evolution of the…
We report on a systematic investigation of the Hbeta and Fe II emission lines in a sample of 568 quasars within z < 0.8 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The conventional broad Hbeta emission line can be decomposed into two components--one with intermediate velocity width and another with very broad width. The velocity shift and equivalent width of the intermediate-width component do not correlate with those of the very broad component of Hbeta, but its velocity shift and width do resemble Fe II. Moreover, the width of the very broad component is roughly 2.5 times that of the interme…
Gravitational lensing of background compact objects like active galactic nuclei and quasars, by extended intermediate mass lenses such as globular clusters and and dark matter clumps with masses 10^5 - 10^8 M_sun, is considered. It is shown that observational study of the galaxy-quasar's associations is a powerful direct observational test of the nature of massive galaxy haloes. Optical interferometric observations with VLTI and Keck instruments are able to constrain masses and number of substructure halo objects. Evidence of gravitational lensing by globular clusters in haloes of spiral and e…
Using a large sample of MgII absorbers with 0.4<z<2.2 detected by Nestor et al (2005) in the Early Data Release of the SDSS, we present new constraints on the physical properties of these systems based on two statistical analyses: (i) By computing the ratio between the composite spectra of quasars with and without absorbers, we measure the reddening effects induced by these intervening systems; and (ii) by stacking SDSS images centered on quasars with strong MgII absorption lines and isolating the excess light around the PSF, we measure the mean luminosity and colors of the absorbing galaxies.…
We present a ~100 ksec Chandra X-ray observation and new VLA radio data of the large scale, 300 kpc long X-ray jet in PKS1127-145, a radio loud quasar at redshift z=1.18. With this deep X-ray observation we now clearly discern the complex X-ray jet morphology and see substructure within the knots. The X-ray and radio jet intensity profiles are seen to be strikingly different with the radio emission peaking strongly at the two outer knots while the X-ray emission is strongest in the inner jet region. The jet X-ray surface brightness gradually decreases by an order of magnitude going out from th…
In this paper we report new evidence that measurements of the broad-line widths in quasars are dependent on the source orientation, consistent with the idea that the broad-line region is flattened or disc-like. This reinforces the view derived from radio-selected samples, where the radio-core dominance has been used as a measure of orientation. The results presented here show a highly significant (>99.95%) correlation between radio spectral index (which we use as a proxy for source orientation) and broad-line width derived from the H-beta and MgII emission lines. This is the first time that th…
We investigate the nature of CO emission from z~6 quasars by combining non-LTE radiative transfer calculations with merger-driven models of z~6 quasar formation that arise naturally in LCDM cosmological simulations. We consider four model quasars formed in 10^12-10^13 M_sun halos from different merging histories. Our main results follow. Owing to massive starbursts and funneling of dense gas into the nuclear regions of merging galaxies, the CO is highly excited and the flux density peaks between J=5-8. The CO morphology of z~6 quasars often exhibits multiple emission peaks which arise from H2 …
We present a new evidence of the accretion disc in active galactic nuclei, by examining the properties of the Ha emission line versus viewing angle, in a sample of superluminal (SL) quasars. Both line velocity width (FWHM) and rest equivalent width (EW) correlate with viewing angle. These correlations are quantitatively consistent with a disc geometry for both the line and the underlying continuum source.
Aims: The ``bright'' High Frequency Peakers (HFPs) sample is a mixture of blazars and intrinsically small and young radio sources. We investigate the polarimetric characteristics of 45 High Frequency Peakers, from the ``bright'' HFP sample, in order to have a deeper knowledge of the nature of each object, and to construct a sample made of genuine young radio sources only. Methods: Simultaneous VLA observations carried out at 22.2, 15.3, 8.4 and 5.0 GHz, together with the information at 1.4 GHz provided by the NVSS at an earlier epoch, have been used to study the linearly polarized emission. Re…
We report the detection of strong CaII/MgII absorption lines at the quasar redshift in the narrow line quasar SDSS J2339-0912 (z=0.6604). The quasar exhibits strong FeII, small Balmer emission line width and a very red B-Ks color. Both the optical continuum and broad emission lines are reddened by SMC-like dust of E(B-V)~1.0 mag, while its near-infrared color (J-Ks=1.60) shows little reddening. The CaII absorption lines are saturated and resolved with an FWHM of 362 km/s and an equivalent width of W_{CaII K}=4.2Å(in the source rest frame). MgII absorption lines are also saturated and have a si…
The integrated line width derived from CO spectroscopy provides a powerful tool to study the internal kinematics of extragalactic objects, including quasars at high redshift, provided that the observed line width can be properly translated to more conventionally used kinematical parameters of galaxies. We show, through construction of a K-band CO Tully-Fisher relation for nearby galaxies spanning a wide range in infrared luminosity, that the CO line width measured at 20% of the peak intensity, when corrected for inclination and other effects, successfully recovers the maximum rotation velocity…
In previous attempts to measure Omega_0 from the angular size-redshift (theta-z) relation of double-lobed radio sources, the observed data have been consistent with a static Euclidean universe, rather than with Friedmann models, and past authors have disagreed as to what effects are responsible. These results may be due to a variety of selection effects, different sample definitions, and inconsistencies in the analysis undermining the results. Using the VLA FIRST survey, we investigate the theta-z relation for a new sample of 103 double-lobed quasars, carefully addressing the various potential…
Semi-analytic models of galaxy formation postulate the existence of virialized gaseous halos around galaxies at high redshifts. A small fraction of the light emitted by any high-redshift quasar is therefore expected to scatter off the free electrons in the halo of its host galaxy. The broadening of the scattered emission lines of the quasar can be used to measure the temperature of these electrons. For gas in virial equilibrium, the velocity width of the scattered line profile is larger by a factor of (m_p/m_e)^{1/2}=43 than the velocity dispersion of the host galaxy and reaches >10,000 km/s f…
We present the results of deep VLT-ISAAC Ks-band imaging of four z~1.5 flat-spectrum quasars selected from the Parkes half-Jansky flat spectrum sample. We find that the hosts of these flat-spectrum quasars are consistent with lying on the K-z Hubble relation for radio galaxies. This implies that the flat-spectrum quasar hosts fall in line with the expectations from orientation based unified schemes and also that they contain black holes of similar mass. Moreover, the width of the Hbeta broad emission line in these objects tends to be narrower than in their misaligned (low-frequency selected qu…
We study the geometry of the Hbeta broad emission region by comparing the M_BH values derived from Hbeta through the virial relation with those obtained from the host galaxy luminosity in a sample of 36 low redshift (z around 0.3) quasars. This comparison lets us infer the geometrical factor f needed to de-project the line-of-sight velocity component of the emitting gas. The wide range of f values we found, together with the strong dependence of f on the observed line width, suggests that a disc-like model for the broad line region is preferable to an isotropic model, both for radio loud and r…
We searched for the presence of extended emission-line regions (EELRs) around low-redshift QSOs. We observed a sample of 20 mainly radio-quiet low-redshift quasars (z<0.3) by means of integral field spectroscopy. After decomposing the extended and nuclear emission components, we constructed [OIII] 5007 narrow-band images of the EELR to measure the total flux. From the same data we obtained high S/N (>50) nuclear spectra to measure properties such as [OIII]/Hbeta flux ratios, FeII equivalent widths and Hbeta line widths. A significant fraction of the quasars (8/20) show a luminous EELR, with de…
We present spectra taken with the Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck 10m telescope of spatially-resolved structures ("fuzz") around the high-redshift radio-loud quasars PKS 0445+097 (z=2.108) and PKS 2338+042 (z=2.589). For PKS 0445+097 we find that there is faint extended HeII1640 and CIII]1909 from the quasar host galaxy. Both of the lines are broad (FWHM(HeII)=1000+-200 km/s and FWHM=2200+-600 km/s). The limits on the fluxes, the large line widths, and the line ratio HeII/CIII] are similar to that observed for high redshift radio galaxies. From the spectrum of PKS 2338+042, we …
We use a semi-analytical approach to simulate absorption spectra of QSOs at high redshifts with the aim of constraining the cosmic reionization history. We consider two physically motivated and detailed reionization histories: (i) an Early Reionization Model (ERM) in which the intergalactic medium is reionized by PopIII stars at $z\approx 14$, and (ii) a more standard Late Reionization Model (LRM) in which overlapping, induced by QSOs and normal galaxies, occurs at $z\approx 6$. From the analysis of current Ly$α$ forest data at $z < 6$, we conclude that it is impossible to disentangle the two …
Only a small fraction of galactic nuclei in the nearby universe are luminous; most of them are currently dim. We investigate the feasibility of constraining the X-ray luminosity in the recent past (up to ~10^6 years ago) of the nucleus of a cluster dominant galaxy by measuring the contribution of scattered radiation from the central source to the surface brightness of the intracluster gas dominated by thermal emission. We show that resonance X-ray lines present an advantage over the adjacent continuum, because the relative contribution of the scattered component is typically larger in the line…
Using a large sample of quasar spectra from the SDSS, we examine the composite spectral trends of quasars as functions of both redshift and luminosity, independently of one another. Aside from the well known Baldwin effect (BE) -- the decrease of line equivalent width with luminosity -- the average spectral properties are remarkably similar. Host galaxy contamination and the BE are the primary causes for apparent changes in the average spectral slope of the quasars. The BE is detected for most emission lines, including the Balmer lines, but with several exceptions including NV1240A. Emission l…
We report the results from an ASCA observation of the high-luminosity, radio-loud quasar PKS 0637-752 (redshift 0.654), covering the 0.8-15 keV band in the quasar-frame. We find the source to have a luminosity ~10^46 erg/s in the 2-10 keV band, a factor of ~3 lower than during a previous GINGA observation. The continuum appears to be well modeled by a simple power-law with a photon index of 1.64 +/- 0.07, with no evidence for absorption by material intrinsic to the quasar, or Fe-K emission (with an equivalent width < 80 eV at 90% confidence). However we do find evidence for a narrow emission l…
We present near-infrared H and K-band spectra of the z=6.41 quasar SDSS J114816.64+525150.3. The spectrum reveals a broad MgII 2799 emission line with a full-width half-maximium of 6000 km/s. From the peak wavelength of this emission line we obtain a more accurate redshift than is possible from the published optical spectrum and determine a redshift of z=6.41+/-0.01. If the true peak of the Lyman alpha emission is at the same redshift, then a large fraction of the flux blueward of the peak is absorbed. The equivalent width of the MgII emission line is similar to that of lower redshift quasars,…
Using a sample of 3814 quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we confirm that high-ionization, broad, emission lines such as CIV are significantly blueshifted with respect to low-ionization, broad, emission lines such as MgII. CIV emission line peaks have a range of shifts from a redshift of 500 km/s to blueshifts well in excess of 2000 km/s as compared to MgII. We confirm previous results that suggest an anti-correlation between the shift of the CIV emission line peak and the rest equivalent width of the CIV emission line. Furthermore, using composite spectra, we are able to show that the…
We present a total of 4784 unique broad absorption line quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Third Data Release. An automated algorithm was used to match a continuum to each quasar and to identify regions of flux at least 10% below the continuum over a velocity range of at least 1000 km/s in the CIV and MgII absorption regions. The model continuum was selected as the best-fit match from a set of template quasar spectra binned in luminosity, emission line width, and redshift, with the power-law spectral index and amount of dust reddening as additional free parameters. We characterize our s…
The large magnification factors of gravitationally lensed (GL) systems allow us to investigate the properties of quasars with X-ray luminosities that are substantially lower than those of unlensed ones and also provide an independent means of estimating the contribution of faint quasars to the hard X-ray component of the cosmic X-ray background. Our spectral analysis indicate a flattening of the spectral index in the hard band (4-20keV restframe) for 2 radio-loud quasars in the GL quasar sample for which the data have moderate signal-to-noise ratio. We have identified a large fraction of Broad…
We present measurements of the optical/UV emission lines for a large homogeneous sample of 993 quasars from the Large Bright Quasar Survey. Our largely automated technique accounts for continuum breaks and galactic reddening, and we perform multicomponent fits to emission line profiles, including the effects of blended iron emission, and of absorption lines both galactic and intrinsic. Here we describe the fitting algorithm and present the results of line fits to the LBQS sample, including upper limits to line equivalent widths when warranted. The distribution of measured line parameters, prin…
We examine the variability of the high-ionizaton C IV line in a sample of 105 quasars observed at multiple epochs by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find a strong correlation between the change in the C IV line flux and the change in the line width, but no correlations between the change in flux and changes in line center and skewness. The relation between line flux change and line width change is consistent with a model in which a broad line base varies with greater amplitude than the line core. The objects studied here are more luminous and at higher redshift than those normally studied for…
We present results from BeppoSAX observations of 10 low redshift quasars. The quasars are part of the Laor et al. (1997) sample of 23 optically selected PG quasars with redshift <0.4 and low Galactic absorption along the line of sight. Significant spectral curvature is detected for the 6 quasars with the highest signal to noise ratio in their low energy spectra. The average curvature can be parameterized as a flattening of the underlying power law by Delta_alpha ~ 0.5 above ~1 keV. We find that quasars with a steeper soft X-ray (0.1-2 keV) spectrum tend to be steeper also at higher (2-10 keV) …
We investigate the possibility of constraining the ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) close to the end of reionization (z ~ 6) by measuring the size of the HII regions in high-z quasars spectra. We perform a combination of multiphase smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) and 3D radiative transfer (RT) simulations to reliably predict the properties of typical high-z quasar HII regions, embedded in a partly neutral IGM (x_HI=0.1). In this work we assume a fixed configuration for the quasar lifetime and luminosity, i.e. t_Q=10^7 yr and N_gamma=5.2 10^56 s-1. From the analysis of m…
Recently, it has been suggested that the CO line width (FWHM(CO)) is a surrogate for the bulge velocity dispersion ($σ$) of the host galaxies of high-redshift quasars, and the black hole -- bulge ($M_{BH}-σ$) relation obtained with this assumption departs significantly from the $M_{BH}-σ$ relation in the local universe. In this study, we first present an investigation of the correlation between the CO line width and the bulge velocity dispersion using a sample of 33 nearby Seyfert galaxies. We find that the formula adopted in previous studies, $σ=\rm{FWHM(CO)}/2.35$, is generally not a good ap…
Observations of gravitational microlensing in multiply imaged quasars currently provide the only direct probe of quasar emission region structure on sub-microarcsecond scales. Analyses of microlensing variability are observationally expensive, requiring long-term monitoring of lensed systems. Here we demonstrate a technique for constraining the size of the quasar continuum emission region as a function of wavelength using single-epoch multi-band imaging. We have obtained images of the lensed quasar MG 0414+0534 in five wavelength bands using the Magellan 6.5-metre Baade telescope at Las Campan…
We show that invaluable information on the structure of quasar outflows can be obtained by considering microlensing (ML) induced variability of absorption line troughs in lensed quasars. Depending on the structure and geometry of the outflowing gas, such extrinsic line variability can be manifested as changes to the equivalent width of the line as well as line profile distortions. Here we consider several physically distinct outflow models, having very similar spectral predictions, and show how ML induced absorption line variability can be used to distinguish between them. The merits of future…
We use cosmological simulations of reionization to predict the effect of large HII regions around individual high-redshift quasars on the possible signal from the redshifted 21cm line of neutral hydrogen in the pre-reionization era. We show that these HII regions appear as ``spectral dips'' in frequency space with equivalent widths in excess of 3 mK MHz or depths in excess of about 1.5 mK, and that they are by far the most prominent cosmological signals in the redshifted HI distribution. These spectral dips are expected to be present in almost every line of sight. If the spectral dips of a lar…
