We revisit the proximity effect produced by QSOs at redshifts 2.1-3.3 applying the FLO approach (Saitta et al. 2008) to a sample of ~6300 Ly-alpha lines fitted in 21 high resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra. This new technique allows to recover the hydrogen density field from the HI column densities of the lines in the Ly-alpha forest, on the basis of simple assumptions on the physical state of the gas. To minimize the systematic uncertainties that could affect the density recovering in the QSO vicinity, we carefully determined the redshifts of the QSOs in our sample and modelled in detail their spectra to compute the corresponding ionising fluxes. The mean density field obtained from the observed spectra shows a significant over-density in the region within 4 proper Mpc from the QSO position, confirming that QSOs are hosted in high density peaks. The absolute value of rho/<rho> for the peak is uncertain by a factor of ~3, depending on the assumed QSO spectral slope and the minimum HI column density detectable in the spectra. We do not confirm the presence of a significant over-density extending to separations of ~15 proper Mpc from the QSO, claimed in previous works at redshifts <z>=2.5 and 3.8. Our best guess for the UV background ionisation rate based on the IGM mean density recovered by FLO is Gamma_UVB ~ 10^{-12} s^{-1}. However, values of Gamma_UVB ~ 3x10^{-12} s^{-1} could be viable if an inverted temperature-density relation with index alpha=-0.5 is adopted.
The transverse proximity effect is the expected decrease in the strength of the Lya forest absorption in a QSO spectrum when another QSO lying close to the line of sight enhances the photoionization rate above that due to the average cosmic ionizing background. We select three QSOs from the Early Data Release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey that have nearby foreground QSOs, with proper line of sight tangential separations of 0.50, 0.82, and 1.10 h^{-1} Mpc. We estimate that the ionizing flux from the foreground QSO should increase the photoionization rate by a factor (94, 13, 13) in these thre…
We look for signs of the H~I transverse proximity effect in the spectra of 130 QSO pairs, most with transverse separations in the plane of the sky of 0.1 -- 3 Mpc at z ~ 2.2. We expected to see a decrease in Lyman-alpha forest HI absorption in the spectrum of background QSOs near the position of foreground QSOs. Instead we see no change in the absorption in front of the foreground QSOs, and we see evidence for a 50% increase in the absorption out to 6 Mpc behind the foreground QSOs. Further, we see no change in the H I absorption along the line-of-sight to the foreground QSOs, the normal line-…
We present an analysis of galaxy and QSO absorption line pairs toward 24 QSOs at redshifts between z~0.2 and 1 in an effort to establish the relationship between galaxies and absorption lines in physical proximity to QSOs. We demonstrate the existence of a galaxy proximity effect, in that galaxies in the vicinities of QSOs do not show the same incidence and extent of gaseous envelopes as galaxies far from QSOs. We show that the galaxy proximity effect exists to galaxy-QSO velocity separations of ~ 3000 km/s, much larger than the size of a typical cluster (~ 1000 km/s), i.e. it is more comparab…
We present an analysis of the proximity effect in a sample of ten 2 A resolution QSO spectra of the Ly alpha forest at <z> = 2.9. Rather than investigating variations in the number density of individual absorption lines we employ a novel technique that is based on the statistics of the transmitted flux itself. We confirm the existence of the proximity effect at the > 99 per cent confidence level. We derive a value for the mean intensity of the extragalactic background radiation at the Lyman limit of J = 3.5^{+3.5}_{-1.3} x 10^{-22} ergs/s/cm^2/Hz/sr. This value assumes that QSO redshifts measu…
We present the results of our study on three close pairs of QSOs. Our results are consistent with the existence of a proximity effect due to the foreground QSO, but due to its weakness we can only reject the absence of such effect at approx. 1 sigma level. By modelling this proximity effect in terms of a simple photoionisation model, we find the best value for the UV ionizing background to be approx. 10**(-20.5) erg cm**(-2) s**(-1) Hz**(-1) srad**(-1) at the Lyman limit, and an absolute lower limit (95\% confidence) of 10**(-21.8) in the same units. This lower limit rejects a number of models…
Measuring the response of the intergalactic medium to a blast of ionizing radiation allows one to infer the physical properties of the medium and, in principle, the lifetime and isotropy of the radiating source. The most sensitive such measurements can be made if the source of radiation is near the line of sight to a bright background QSO. We present results based on deep Keck/HIRES observations of the QSO triplet KP76, KP77 and KP78 at z ~2.5, with separations of 2-3 arcmin on the plane of the sky. Using accurate systemic redshifts of the QSOs from near-IR spectroscopy, we quantify the state …
The quasar Q1208+1011 (z_{em}=3.8) is the second highest redshift double quasar ever detected. Several indications point toward it being a gravitational lensed system, although a definitive proof is still lacking. We present new evidence of its lensed nature based on the weakness of the ``proximity effect'' measured in the high resolution Lyman absorption spectrum of the QSO. A luminosity amplification as large as 22 has been derived from this analysis. Indications on the redshift of the lensing galaxy can be obtained from the analysis of the intervening heavy element absorption systems discov…
The influence of a foreground QSO on the lyman a forest of another QSO with higher redshift has been investigated by analyzing the spectra of three such objects at redshifts $z=2 - 2.7$. This influence is not contaminated by any projection effects, as opposed to the inverse effect along the line of sight, where incomplete coverage of the QSO continuum emitting region by the lyman a clouds could contribute to the relative lack of lines. Our results are consistent with the existence of a proximity effect due to the foreground QSO, but due to its weakness we can only reject the absence of such ef…
The proximity effect of metal line absorption systems in spectra of high redshift quasars and quasar pairs is investigated through the distribution of \Lyalpha forests. No strong proximity effect is found down to 500 km/sec away from a metal line absorption system for lyman $α$ clouds with $13.3\le\log\NHI <13.8$ at a redshift of $\sim 3$. Its implication on properties of high redshift galaxies and \Lyalpha clouds is discussed. More high resolution spectra of high redshift quasars and pairs of quasars (whose lines of sight are separated by $\sim 0.3h^{-1}$ to 1$h^{-1}$ Mpc) are needed so that …
Since the photons that stream from QSOs alter the ionization state of the gas they traverse, any changes to a QSO's luminosity will produce outward-propagating ionization gradients in the surrounding intergalactic gas. This paper shows that at redshift z~3 the gradients will alter the gas's Lyman-alpha absorption opacity enough to produce a detectable signature in the spectra of faint background galaxies. By obtaining noisy (S:N~4) low-resolution (~7A) spectra of a several dozen background galaxies in an R~20' field surrounding an isotropically radiating 18th magnitude QSO at z=3, it should be…
We report the discovery of the faint (V=21.7) quasar QSO03027-0010 at z=2.808 in the vicinity of Q0302-003, one of the few quasars observed with STIS to study intergalactic HeII absorption. Together with another newly discovered QSO at z=2.29, there are now 6 QSOs known near the line of sight towards Q0302-003, of which 4 are located within the redshift region 2.76<=z<=3.28 covered by the STIS spectrum. We correlated the opacity variations in the HI and HeII Lyman forest spectra with the locations of known quasars. There is no significant proximity effect in the HI Lyman alpha forest for any o…
We used 40 high resolution, high S/N QSO spectra at 2.1<z<4.7 to search for the signature of the proximity effect in the HI Lyalpha forest. Comparing the effective optical depth near each QSO with the expected one, we clearly detect the proximity effect on the combined QSO sample and towards each individual QSO. The observed proximity effect strength distribution (PESD) is asymmetric towards a weak effect. We demonstrate that this is not simply an effect of gravitational clustering around QSOs. Comparing simulated PESDs with observations, we argue that the averaging method to determine the UVB…
We report the discovery of 14 quasars in the vicinity of HE2347-4342, one of the two quasars whose intergalactic HeII forest has been resolved with FUSE. By analysing the HI and the HeII opacity variations separately, no transverse proximity effect is detected near three foreground quasars of HE2347-4342: QSOJ23503-4328 (z=2.282, $\vartheta=3.59$ arcmin), QSOJ23500-4319 (z=2.302, $\vartheta=8.77$ arcmin) and QSOJ23495-4338 (z=2.690, $\vartheta=16.28$ arcmin). This is primarily due to line contamination and overdensities probably created by large-scale structure. By comparing the HI absorption …
A homogeneous sample of 99 moderate resolution QSO spectra at z > 1.7 were presented in Paper I, including 39 previously unpublished spectra from the Multiple Mirror Telescope. The statistics of the Lyman alpha forest were discussed. In this analysis, we demonstrate that a proximity effect is present in the data, ie. there exists a significant (5.5$σ$) deficit of lines at $z_{abs} \approx z_{em}$. Within 1.5 $h^{-1}$ Mpc of the QSO emission redshift, the significance does depend on QSO luminosity, in accordance with the theory that this effect is caused by enhanced ionization of hydrogen in th…
We have compiled, from the literature, a sample of Ly $α$ forest lines in the spectra of 69 QSOs, all observed with a resolution between 60 to 100 km s$^{-1}$. The sample is studied for proximity effect. We have tried to account for the effect of blending which is inherent in the intermediate resolution sample, by calculating the column density distribution, using an effective velocity dispersion parameter, from the observed equivalent width distribution. The use of this column density distribution in the proximity effect analysis reduces the background intensity values by a factor of 2 to 3 c…
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data release 3 (SDSS DR3) we investigate how narrow (<700km/s) CIV and MgII quasar absorption line systems are distributed around quasars. The CIV absorbers lie in the redshift range 1.6 < z < 4 and the MgII absorbers in the range 0.4<z<2.2. By correlating absorbers with quasars on different but neighbouring lines-of-sight, we measure the clustering of absorbers around quasars on comoving scales between 4 and 30Mpc. The observed comoving correlation lengths are r_o~5h^-1Mpc, similar to those observed for bright galaxies at these redshifts. Comparing…
The Lyman-alpha forest has opened a new redshift regime for cosmological investigation. At z > 2 it provides a unique probe of cosmic geometry and an independent constraint on dark energy that is not subject to standard candle or ruler assumptions. In Paper I of this series on using the Lyman-alpha forest observed in pairs of QSOs for a new application of the Alcock-Paczynski test, we present and discuss the results of a campaign to obtain moderate-resolution spectroscopy (FWHM ~ 2.5 Angstroms) of the Lyman-alpha forest in pairs of QSOs with small redshift differences (Delta z < 0.25, z > 2.2)…
We present the first measurement of the faint end of the QSO luminosity function at z=3. The QSOs, which range from M_1450 = -21 to M_1450 = -27, were discovered in 17 fields totaling 0.43 deg^2 using multicolor selection criteria (the Lyman break technique) and spectroscopic followup. We find that the faint-end slope of the luminosity function is beta_l=1.24 +/- 0.07, flatter than the value of beta_l=1.64 +/- 0.18 measured at lower redshift. The integrated rest 1450 A UV luminosity of z=3 QSOs is only 50% of most previous estimates, and is only ~8% of that produced by Lyman break galaxies at …
(Abridged) With the goal of investigating the nature of OVI absorbers at high redshifts, we study the effects of proximity to the background quasar. In a sample of sixteen quasars at z(QSO) between 2.14 and 2.87 observed at 6.6 km/s resolution with VLT/UVES, we detect 35 OVI absorption-line systems lying within 8000 km/s of z(QSO). The systems can be categorized into 9 strong and 26 weak OVI absorbers. The strong absorbers are defined by the presence of either broad, fully saturated OVI absorption or partial coverage of the continuum source, and have log N(OVI)>~15.0; these systems are intrins…
The QSO lifetime t_Q is one of the most fundamental quantities for understanding black hole and QSO evolution, yet it remains uncertain by several orders of magnitude. If t_Q is long, then only a small fraction of galaxies went through a luminous QSO phase. In contrast, a short lifetime would require most galaxies today to have undergone a QSO phase in their youth. The current best estimates or constraints on t_Q from black hole demographics and the radiative properties of QSOs vary from at least 10^6 to 10^8 years. This broad range still allows both possibilities: that QSOs were either a rare…
We present results from high resolution (R\simeq 28000) spectra of six high- redshift QSOs taken at the ESO NTT telescope that allow the detailed study of the Ly-alpha population in the redshift interval z=2.8-4.1. The typical Doppler parameters found for the Ly-alpha lines lie in the interval b=20\div30 km/s, corresponding to temperatures T>24000K, with a fraction of the order 15% in the range 10<b<20km/s. These values are still consistent with models of low density, highly ionized clouds. The observed redshift and column density distributions obtained from these spectra and from the observat…
Using our photoionization code CIRRUS, we show that the study of proximity effect on metal elements provides a possibility of placing constraints on the spectral shape of the metagalactic UV background (MUVB). From theoretical point of view, the most optimum indicator of the spectral shape of the MUVB is the ratio OIV/OIII. Unlike previous thought, the ratio SiIV/CIV is not a good indicator of the spectral shape because of its strong dependence on an ionization parameter as well. We also find that the observed excess of CIV systems in luminous QSOs may be a photoionization effect, but not a gr…
Two new samples of QSOs have been constructed from recent surveys to test the hypothesis that the redshift distribution of bright QSOs is periodic in $\log(1+z)$. The first of these comprises 57 different redshifts among all known close pairs or multiple QSOs, with image separations $\leq$ 10\arcsec, and the second consists of 39 QSOs selected through their X-ray emission and their proximity to bright comparatively nearby active galaxies. The redshift distributions of the samples are found to exhibit distinct peaks with a periodic separation of $\sim 0.089 $ in $\log(1+z)$ identical to that cl…
We have performed proximity effect analysis of low and high resolution data, considering detailed frequency and redshift dependence of the AGN spectra processed through galactic and intergalactic material. We show that such a background flux, calculated using the observed distribution of AGNs, falls short of the value required by the proximity effect analysis by a factor of $\ge$ 2.7. We have studied the uncertainty in the value of the required flux due to its dependence on the resolution, description of column density distribution, systemic redshifts of QSOs etc. We conclude that in view of t…
We report the detection of significant Lyman continuum flux in the composite spectrum of 29 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with redshifts <z> = 3.40+/-0.09. After correction for opacity due to intervening absorption using a new composite QSO spectrum evaluated at the same redshift, the ratio of emergent flux density at 1500 Åin the rest frame to that in the Lyman continuum is L(1500)/L(900) = 4.6 +/- 1.0. If the relative intensity of the inferred escaping Lyman continuum radiation is typical of LBGs at z ~ 3 (the galaxies in this sample are drawn from the bluest quartile of LBG spectral energy di…
We show that a cooled region of shocked supernova ejecta forms in a type II supernova-QSO wind interaction, and has a density, an ionization parameter, and a column density compatible with those inferred for the high ionization component of the broad emission line regions in QSOs. The calculations are based on the assumption that the ejecta flow is described initially by a similarity solution investigated by Chevalier (1982) and Nadyozhin (1985) and is spherically symmetric. Heating and cooling appropriate for gas irradiated by a nearby powerful continuum source is included in our model, toget…
We show that the Lyman-alpha optical depth statistics in the proximity regions of quasar spectra depend on the mass of the dark matter halos hosting the quasars. This is owing to both the overdensity around the quasars and the associated infall of gas toward them. For a fiducial quasar host halo mass of (3.0+/-1.6) h^-1 x 10^12 Msun, as inferred by Croom et al. from clustering in the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey, we show that estimates of the ionizing background (Gamma^bkg) from proximity effect measurements could be biased high by a factor of ~2.5 at z=3 owing to neglecting these effects alone. Th…
If high-redshift QSOs are ejected from the nuclei of low-redshift galaxies, as some have claimed, a large portion of their redshift must be intrinsic (non-Doppler). If these intrinsic components have preferred values, redshifts will tend to cluster around these preferred values and produce peaks in the redshift distribution. Doppler ejection and Hubble flow components will broaden each peak. Because ejection velocities are randomly directed and Hubble flow components are always positive, in this model all peaks are expected to show an asymmetry, extending further out in the red wing. If peaks …
We exploit a set of high signal-to-noise (~70), low-resolution (R~800) quasar spectra to search for the signature of the so-called proximity effect in the HI Ly alpha forest. Our sample consists of 17 bright quasars in the redshift range 2.7<z<4.1. Analysing the spectra with the flux transmission technique, we detect the proximity effect in the sample at high significance. We use this to estimate the average intensity of the metagalactic UV background, assuming it to be constant over this redshift range. We obtain a value of J = (9+-4)x10^{-22}ergcm^{-2}s^{-1}Hz^{-1}sr^{-1}, in good agreement …
QSOs and radio-galaxies, together with the CMB, ``normal'' galaxies and clusters, represent the main source of information about the origin and evolution of the Large Scale Structure. They can be used either directly, as tracers of the density peaks, or as cosmic lighthouses, probing the Universe along the line of sight with their conspicuous flow of photons. The amplitude of the QSO clustering has been measured to be $r_o \simeq 6 \hmpc$ at $z\sim 2$ and appears to increase with redshift. These properties are consistent with a scenario in which the quasars, with a lifetime of $t \sim 10^8 yr$…
The spectrum of the quasar Q0055-269 ($z=3.66$) has been observed at the resolution of 14 km s$^{-1}$ in the wavelength interval 4750--6300 Å. We give a list of Lyman$-α$ lines and metal-line systems for which column densities and Doppler widths have been derived by a fitting procedure. The statistical distribution of the Doppler parameter for the Lyman$-α$ lines is peaked at $b\simeq 23$ km s$^{-1}$, with 13\% of lines with $15\leq b\leq 20$ km s$^{-1}$. The column density distribution of the Lyman$-α$ lines is described by a power-law with a break or cutoff at $\log N_{HI} \simeq 14.5$. A fe…
We present the first large sample of absorption systems in paired QSOs consisting of 691 absorption systems in the spectra of 310 QSOs including 170 pairings. All these absorption systems have metal lines, usually C IV or Mg II. We see 17 cases of absorption in one line-of-sight within 200 km/s (1 Mpc) of absorption in the paired line-of-sight with the probability at least approx 50% at 100kpc, declining rapidly to 23% at 100 - 200 kpc. We detect clustering on 0.5Mpc scales and see a hint of the "fingers of God" redshift-space distortion. The distribution matches absorbers arising in galaxies …
We observe with Keck/HIRES the z ~ 2.5 QSO triplet 1623+27 in order to explore on the scale of a Megaparsec the spatial clustering of C IV absorbers between adjacent sightlines. We find this signal to be significantly weaker than the clustering in velocity on corresponding scales along single sightlines, assuming that the relative velocity of absorbers is dominated by the Hubble flow. This indicates that small-scale clustering (200 km/s < Delta v < 600 km/s) of the C IV absorbers cannot be interpreted in terms of the positions of the absorbers in space, but must be considered as internal motio…
We demonstrate that the luminosity function of the recently detected population of star-forming galaxies and the QSO luminosity function at z=3 can be matched with the mass function of dark matter haloes predicted by hierarchical cosmogonies for lifetimes of optically bright QSOs in the range 10^6 to 10^8 yr. We suggest that the mass of supermassive black holes may be limited by the back-reaction of the emitted energy on the accretion flow in a self-gravitating disc. This would imply a relation of black hole to halo mass of the form M_bh ~(v_halo)^5 and a typical duration of the optically brig…
[Abridged] We present FLO (From Lines to Over-densities), a new technique to reconstruct the hydrogen density field for the Lya forest lines observed in high resolution QSO spectra. The method is based on the hypothesis that the Lya lines arise in the low to intermediate density intergalactic gas and that the Jeans length is the typical size of the Lya absorbers. The reliability of FLO is tested against mock spectra obtained from cosmological simulations. The recovering algorithm gives satisfactory results in the range from the mean density to over-densities of ~30 and reproduces correctly the…
New measurements of the z~6 intergalactic CIV abundance are presented, using moderate resolution IR spectra of two QSOs taken with GNIRS on Gemini South. These data were systematically searched for high redshift CIV absorption lines, using objective selection criteria. Comprehensive tests were performed to quantify sample incompleteness, as well as the rate of false positive CIV identifications. The trend of constant $Ω_{CIV}(z)$ observed at z~2-5 appears to continue to z~6, the highest observed redshift. The CIV sample is also consistent with the redshift-invariant form of the CIV column dens…
Observations of resolved HeII Lyman alpha absorption in spectra of two QSO's suggest that the epoch of helium ionization occurred at z~3. Proximity zones in the spectra of the quasars (z=3.18, 3.285) at 304 A resemble Stromgren spheres, suggesting that the intergalactic medium is only singly ionized in helium. We present models of the proximity effect which include the full physics of the ionization, heating and cooling and an accurately simulated inhomogeneous gas distribution. In these models the underdense intergalactic medium is heated to at least 10,000-20,000 K after cooling to as low as…
We present a method for studying the proximity effect and the density structure around redshift z=2-3 quasars. It is based on the probability distribution of Lyman-alpha pixel optical depths and its evolution with redshift. We validate the method using mock spectra obtained from hydrodynamical simulations, and then apply it to a sample of 12 bright quasars at redshifts 2-3 observed with UVES at the VLT-UT2 Kueyen ESO telescope. These quasars do not show signatures of associated absorption and have a mean monochromatic luminosity of 5.4 10^{31} h^{-2} erg/s/Hz at the Lyman limit. The observed d…
We show that in stochastic large scale velocity fields superposed on the general Hubble flow, the formation of the GP-depression in QSO spectra is intimately related to the formation of the absorption-line structure usually called `Ly-alpha forest'. Therefore the HI-density in the diffuse IGM might be substaintially underestimated if one determines the GP-effect from the apparent continuum in high resolution spectra of QSOs. Our tentative calculations imply a current baryon density Omega_b h^2_{100} = 0.015 which agrees well with the baryon density determination from the deuterium abaundance m…
We analyze the transmitted flux in a sample of 17 QSOs spectra at 5.74<zem<6.42 to obtain tighter constraints on the volume-averaged neutral hydrogen fraction, xHI, at z~6. We study separately the narrow transmission windows (peaks) and the wide dark portions (gaps) in the observed absorption spectra. By comparing the statistics of these spectral features with Lyalpha forest simulations, we conclude that xHI evolves smoothly from 10^{-4.4} at z=5.3 to 10^{-4.2} at z=5.6, with a robust upper limit xHI<0.36 at z=6.3. The frequency and physical sizes of the peaks imply an origin in cosmic underde…
We show that spatial correlations in a stochastic large scale velocity field in an otherwise smooth intergalactic medium (homogeneous comoving density) superposed on the general Hubble flow, may cause a `line-like' structure in QSO spectra similar to the population of unsaturated Ly-alpha forest lines which usually are attributed to individual clouds with 10^{11} <= N(HI) <= 5*10^{13} cm^{-2}. Therefore there is no clear observational distinction between a diffuse intergalactic medium and discrete intergalactic clouds. It follows that the HI-density in the diffuse intergalactic medium might be…
We present a direct measurement of the metallicity distribution function for the high redshift intergalactic medium. We determine the shape of this function using survival statistics, which account for both detections and non-detections of OVI and CIV associated with HI absorption in quasar spectra. Our OVI sample probes the metal content of ~50% of all baryons at z~2.5. We find a median intergalactic abundance of [O,C/H]=-2.82; the differential abundance distribution is approximately lognormal with mean <[C,O/H]>~-2.85 and σ=0.75 dex. Some 60-70% the Lya forest lines are enriched to observabl…
