The Lyman-alpha forest has opened a new redshift regime for cosmological investigation. At z > 2 it provides a unique probe of cosmic geometry and an independent constraint on dark energy that is not subject to standard candle or ruler assumptions. In Paper I of this series on using the Lyman-alpha forest observed in pairs of QSOs for a new application of the Alcock-Paczynski test, we present and discuss the results of a campaign to obtain moderate-resolution spectroscopy (FWHM ~ 2.5 Angstroms) of the Lyman-alpha forest in pairs of QSOs with small redshift differences (Delta z < 0.25, z > 2.2) and arcminute separations (< 5'). This data set, composed of seven individual QSOs, 35 pairs, and one triplet, is also well-suited for future investigations of the coherence of Lyman-alpha absorbers on ~ 1 Mpc transverse scales and the transverse proximity effect. We note seven revisions for previously published QSO identifications and/or redshifts.
We report the possible discovery of multiple gravitationally-lensed images of QSOs with angular separations on arcminute scales. The QSOs were selected from the completed 2dF QSO survey as having redshifts and optical colours which are statistically consistent. In this paper we present higher-quality optical spectra of the candidates and discuss the likelihood of their genuinely being systems lensed by massive clusters of galaxies. From a comparison of the spectra it appears that up to six pairs of QSOs may be lensed multiple images, although the true number may be less than that and further o…
We have discovered extended Lyman-$α$ emission around a $z=4.5$ QSO in a deep long-slit spectrum with Keck/LRIS at moderate spectral resolution ($R\approx 1000$). The line emission extends 5\,arcsec beyond the continuum of the QSO and is spatially asymmetric. This extended line emission has a spectral extent of 1000km/s, much narrower in velocity spread than the broad Lyman-$α$ from the QSO itself and slightly offset in redshift. No evidence of continuum is seen for the extended emission line region, suggesting that this recombination line is powered by reprocessed QSO Lyman continuum flux rat…
We carried out a target survey for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) around QSO SDSS J0211-0009 at z=4.87. The deep and wide broadband and narrowband imaging simultaneously revealed the perspective structure of these two high-z populations. The LBGs without Ly-alpha emission form a filamentary structure including the QSO, while the LAEs are distributed around the QSO but avoid it within a distance of ~4.5Mpc. On the other hand, we serendipitously discovered a protocluster with a significant concentration of LBGs and LAEs where no strongly UV ionizing source such as a …
We calculate the neutral hydrogen column density of self-absorption in QSOs predicted in a model where the QSOs are located in the same halos that contain the gas in damped Lya absorption systems. The model is parameterized by the probability P_0 that any halo has an active QSO. We assume that the QSOs ionize the gas, but do not expel or heat it. The derived HI column densities produce negligible Lyman limit absorption, even in the lowest luminosity QSOs, with an optical depth of only ~ 10% for luminosity L=0.01 L_*, when P_0=10^{-2}. We also compute the HeII Lyman limit self-absorption, which…
We use integral field spectroscopy with the Gemini North Telescope to detect probable fluorescent Ly-alpha emission from gas lying close to the luminous QSO PSS 2155+1358 at redshift 4.28. The emission is most likely coming not from primordial gas, but from a multi-phase, chemically enriched cloud of gas lying about 50 kpc from the QSO. It appears to be associated with a highly ionised associated absorber seen in the QSO spectrum. With the exception of this gas cloud, the environment of the QSO is remarkably free of neutral hydrogen. We also marginally detect Ly-alpha emission from a foregroun…
Some QSOs show an abrupt, strong rise in polarization near rest wavelength 750 A. If this arises in the atmosphere of an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole, it may have diagnostic value. In PG 1222+228, the polarization rise occurs at the wavelength of a sharp drop in flux. We examine and reject interpretations of this feature involving a high velocity outflow. The observations agree with a model involving several intervening Lyman limit systems, two of which happen to coincide with the Lyman continuum polarization rise. After correction for the Lyman limit absorption, the continu…
We present spectroscopic observations obtained with the FORS1 instrument on the ESO VLT under good seeing conditions of the radio-quiet z_em = 3.04 quasar Q1205-30 and its associated extended Lyman-alpha emission. The extended Lyman-alpha emission was originally found in a deep narrow band image targeting a z_abs = z_em Lyman-limit system in the spectrum of the QSO. Using spectral point-spread function fitting to subtract the QSO spectrum, we clearly detect the extended Lyman-alpha emission as well as two foreground galaxies at small impact parameters (2.12 +- 0.04 and 2.77 +- 0.07 arcsec). Th…
We present the results of our study on three close pairs of QSOs. Our results are consistent with the existence of a proximity effect due to the foreground QSO, but due to its weakness we can only reject the absence of such effect at approx. 1 sigma level. By modelling this proximity effect in terms of a simple photoionisation model, we find the best value for the UV ionizing background to be approx. 10**(-20.5) erg cm**(-2) s**(-1) Hz**(-1) srad**(-1) at the Lyman limit, and an absolute lower limit (95\% confidence) of 10**(-21.8) in the same units. This lower limit rejects a number of models…
We look for signs of the H~I transverse proximity effect in the spectra of 130 QSO pairs, most with transverse separations in the plane of the sky of 0.1 -- 3 Mpc at z ~ 2.2. We expected to see a decrease in Lyman-alpha forest HI absorption in the spectrum of background QSOs near the position of foreground QSOs. Instead we see no change in the absorption in front of the foreground QSOs, and we see evidence for a 50% increase in the absorption out to 6 Mpc behind the foreground QSOs. Further, we see no change in the H I absorption along the line-of-sight to the foreground QSOs, the normal line-…
The influence of a foreground QSO on the lyman a forest of another QSO with higher redshift has been investigated by analyzing the spectra of three such objects at redshifts $z=2 - 2.7$. This influence is not contaminated by any projection effects, as opposed to the inverse effect along the line of sight, where incomplete coverage of the QSO continuum emitting region by the lyman a clouds could contribute to the relative lack of lines. Our results are consistent with the existence of a proximity effect due to the foreground QSO, but due to its weakness we can only reject the absence of such ef…
Recent spectropolarimetry of QSOs has revealed a surprising rise in polarization in the Lyman continuum of several objects. We discuss several recent attempts to interpret this feature, including the role of Lyman limit absorption in PG 1222+228. We present new theoretical results involving electron scattering in a hot corona or wind above an accretion disk, and polarization resulting from the relativistic returning radiation. These mechanisms can lead to potentially observable polarization at short wavelengths, but neither has quantitative success in fitting the observed Lyman continuum polar…
Wide separation lensing statistics offer information about the density profile and abundance of dark halos. Recently a possible discovery of six quasar pairs, which may be lensed multiple images, was reported by Miller et al. (2003, astro-ph/0210644). These pairs are selected from a catalog of the 2dF quasar (QSO) survey comprising 22163 quasars. We calculate expected numbers of lensed quasars taking account of the redshift and magnitude distributions of the quasar catalog. Given some of the six pairs are genuine lensed systems, we put interesting constraints on the inner slope of dark halos, …
We have detected Lyman-alpha emission from a damped Lyman-alpha system (DLA) that lies near the bright quasar HS1549+1919. The DLA has the same redshift as HS1549+1919 and was discovered in the spectrum of a faint QSO that lies 49" away (380 proper kpc). The emission line's luminosity, double-peaked profile, and small spatial separation from the DLA suggest that it may be fluorescent Lyman-alpha emission from gas that is absorbing the nearby QSO's radiation. If this is the case, our observations show that the DLA has a size of at least 1.5" and that the QSO's luminosity one million years ago w…
The Lyman edge at 912 Åis an important diagnostic region for studying quasi-stellar objects (QSOs). In particular, it reveals a great deal about the physical conditions within the atmospheres of accretion disks, a ubiquitous component of QSO theories. A robust prediction of accretion disk models is a significant polarization due to electron scattering just longward (in wavelength) of the Lyman edge because of the wavelength dependence of the Hydrogen absorption opacity. Observations of the Lyman edge regions of QSOs have shown scant evidence for the predicted features-few QSOs show the broad, …
The galaxy giving rise to the damped Ly$α$ absorbing system in the QSO OI 363 with z=0.221 has been found. A galaxy which is probably associated with the second DLA in this same QSO at z=0.0912 has also been found. Neither galaxy is very luminous, and neither galaxy shows signs of extensive current star formation, a massive disk or lots of gas. The impact parameters for each of the two galaxies with respect to the QSO are reasonable. If most DLA absorbers arise in such low luminosity galaxies, it will be difficult to pick out the correct galaxy giving rise to DLA systems at high redshift withi…
We present arguments based on the measured abundances in individual damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) and sub-damped Lyman alpha systems (sub-DLAs), and also the average abundances inferred in large samples of QSO absorption line systems, to suggest that the amount of dust in intervening QSO absorbers is small and is not responsible for missing many QSOs in magnitude limited QSO surveys. While we can not totally rule out a bimodal dust distribution with a population of very dusty, metal rich, absorbers which push the background QSOs below the observational threshold of current optical spectros…
We present a sample of 33 damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) whose absorption redshifts (z_abs) are within 6000 km/s of the QSO's systemic redshift (z_sys). Our sample is based on 731 2.5 < z_sys < 4.5 non-broad-absorption-line (non-BAL) QSOs from Data Release 3 (DR3) of the SDSS. We estimate that our search is ~100 % complete for absorbers with N(HI) >= 2e20 cm^-2. The derived number density of DLAs per unit redshift, n(z), within v < 6000 km/s is higher (3.5 sigma significance) by almost a factor of 2 than that of intervening absorbers observe…
In gravitational instability models, there is a close relationship between most Lyman-alpha absorption and the matter density along the line of sight. Croft et al. (1997) have shown that it is possible to use this relationship with some additional assumptions (such as Gaussianity of the initial density) to recover the power spectrum of mass fluctuations, P(k), from QSO absorption spectra. The relative uniformity of the ionizing radiation background on the scales of interest is an additional assumption required by the technique. Here we examine the fluctuations in Lyman-alpha spectra caused if …
Observations of redshifted Lyman alpha forest absorption in the spectra of quasistellar objects (QSOs) provide a highly sensitive probe of the distribution of gaseous matter in the universe. Over the past two decades optical spectroscopy with large ground-based telescopes, and more recently ultraviolet spectroscopy from space have yielded a wealth of information on what appears to be a gaseous, photoionized intergalactic medium, partly enriched by the products of stellar nucleosynthesis, residing in coherent structures over many hundreds of kiloparsecs. Recent progress with cosmological hydro-…
We present the first moderate resolution (approx. 40--120 km/s) spectroscopic observations of the bright (V<16.7) high-redshift QSOs Q1107+487 (z_{em} = 2.965) and Q1442+295 (z_{em} = 2.669) (Sanduleak & Pesch 1989). The relatively high signal to noise reached in the spectra along with an extensive wavelength coverage of the Lyman alpha and the Lyman beta forest allowed us to obtain, through profile fitting, column densities and Doppler parameters of the Lyman clouds towards these QSOs. The spectral coverage of regions longward of the Lyman alpha emission line of the QSOs at the expected wavel…
In this paper we present Monte-Carlo simulations of Lyman alpha absorption systems which originate in galactic haloes, galaxy discs and dark matter (DM) satellites around big central haloes. It is found that for strong Lyman alpha absorption lines galactic haloes and satellites can explain ~20% and 40% of the line number density of QSO absorption line key project respectively. If big galaxies indeed possess such large numbers of DM satellites and they possess gas, these satellites may play an important role for strong Lyman alpha lines. However the predicted number density of Lyman-limit syste…
The quasar Q1208+1011 (z_{em}=3.8) is the second highest redshift double quasar ever detected. Several indications point toward it being a gravitational lensed system, although a definitive proof is still lacking. We present new evidence of its lensed nature based on the weakness of the ``proximity effect'' measured in the high resolution Lyman absorption spectrum of the QSO. A luminosity amplification as large as 22 has been derived from this analysis. Indications on the redshift of the lensing galaxy can be obtained from the analysis of the intervening heavy element absorption systems discov…
We have obtained very deep near-infrared images in the fields of 10 QSOs whose spectra contain damped Lyman-alpha absorption (DLA) systems with 1.7<z_abs <2.5. The main aim of our investigation is to provide new constraints on the properties of distant galaxies responsible for the DLA absorption. After subtracting the point spread function associated with the QSO light, we have detected galaxies very close to the QSO line of sight (projected distance 1.2-1.3arcsec) in two fields. These sources therefore represent promising candidate galaxies responsible for the DLA absorption. Placed at the ab…
We present new GHRS observations of Lyman alpha absorption lines associated with a group of galaxies towards the QSO 1545+2101. We have identified eight distinct Lyman alpha absorption features in the spectrum of QSO 1545+2101 at a mean redshift of z=0.2648 with a velocity dispersion of 163 km/s. A group of galaxies is detected in the vicinity of this QSO at a mean redshift of z=0.2645 and velocity dispersion 239 km/s. The identification of discrete absorption systems indicates that they arise in clouds of neutral hydrogen rather than in a diffuse intragroup medium. Our analysis suggests that …
We report the detection of significant Lyman continuum flux in the composite spectrum of 29 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) with redshifts <z> = 3.40+/-0.09. After correction for opacity due to intervening absorption using a new composite QSO spectrum evaluated at the same redshift, the ratio of emergent flux density at 1500 Åin the rest frame to that in the Lyman continuum is L(1500)/L(900) = 4.6 +/- 1.0. If the relative intensity of the inferred escaping Lyman continuum radiation is typical of LBGs at z ~ 3 (the galaxies in this sample are drawn from the bluest quartile of LBG spectral energy di…
We present a moderate resolution (~1.15 Angstroms/pixel) survey of 79 quasars obtained using the Kast spectrograph on the Shane 3m telescope at Lick observatory. The spectra span the wavelength range of 3175-5880 Angstroms, and have typical signal to noise of 6-20 in the regions of the spectra showing Lyman alpha forest absorption. The quasars have a mean emission redshift of z=2.17, and nearly all cover the entire Lyman alpha forest between Lyman alpha and Lyman beta. Although the quasars were selected to avoid BAL, two quasars in the survey are BAL, one of which is a new discovery. We list t…
The proximity effect of metal line absorption systems in spectra of high redshift quasars and quasar pairs is investigated through the distribution of \Lyalpha forests. No strong proximity effect is found down to 500 km/sec away from a metal line absorption system for lyman $α$ clouds with $13.3\le\log\NHI <13.8$ at a redshift of $\sim 3$. Its implication on properties of high redshift galaxies and \Lyalpha clouds is discussed. More high resolution spectra of high redshift quasars and pairs of quasars (whose lines of sight are separated by $\sim 0.3h^{-1}$ to 1$h^{-1}$ Mpc) are needed so that …
We have detected two high ionization phases of gas in the z ~ 2.77 partial Lyman limit system (LLS) towards QSO 1157-3143. We detect the first phase by CIV and SiIV absorption, and the second phase -- which is either warmer or undergoing larger random bulk motions than the first -- via OVI absorption. Both phases of gas are present in similar column density ratios in each of the 5 velocity components, making it appear that this LLS is constructed of 5 very similar building blocks. We find that this system displays some of the properties expected of a hierarchical merging event, although publis…
Quasars trace the most massive structures at high redshifts and their presence may influence the evolution of the massive host galaxies. We study the extended Lyman alpha emission line regions (EELRs) around seven bright, mostly radio-quiet quasars (QSOs) at 2.7<z<4.5, and compare luminosities with EELRs around radio-loud QSOs reported in the literature. Using integral field spectroscopy, we analyse the morphology and kinematics of the quiescent Lya EELRs around the QSOs. We find evidence for the presence of EELRs around four radio-quiet and one radio-loud QSO. All EELRs appear asymmetric and …
The presence of dust in quasar absorbers, such as damped Lyman alpha (DLA) systems, may cause the background QSO to appear reddened. We investigate the extent of this potential reddening by comparing the optical-to-infrared (IR) colors of QSOs with and without intervening absorbers. Our QSO sample is based on the Complete Optical and Radio Absorption Line System (CORALS) survey of Ellison et al (2001). We have obtained near-simultaneous B and K band magnitudes for subset of the CORALS sample and supplemented our observations with further measurements published in the literature. To account for…
We present the results of deep Lyman limit imaging in four new fields as part of a continuing search for galaxies at $3.0 \le z \le 3.5$. The technique uses a custom broad--band filter set ($U_n G {\cal R}$) designed to isolate objects having Lyman continuum breaks superposed on otherwise flat--spectrum ultraviolet continua. The observations are specifically aimed at detecting known galaxies producing optically thick QSO metal line absorption systems, but are equally sensitive to more generally distributed objects at the redshifts of interest. Together with previously published results of the …
We use Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 2 QSO spectra to constrain the dust-reddening caused by intervening damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs). Comparing the spectral index distribution of a 70 sight-line DLA sample with that of a large control sample reveals no evidence for dust-reddening at z~3. Our limit on the shift in spectral index, |Delta(alpha)| < 0.19 (3-sigma), corresponds to a limit on the colour excess due to SMC-like dust-reddening, E(B-V) < 0.02 mag (3-sigma). This is inconsistent with the early studies of Fall, Pei and collaborators who used the small QSO and DLA samples ava…
The z ~ 0.701 absorption system towards the QSO PG1718+4807 is the only example of a QSO absorption system which might have a deuterium/hydrogen ratio approximately ten times the value found towards other QSOs. We have obtained new STIS spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope of the Lyman alpha and Lyman limit regions of the system. These spectra give the redshift and velocity dispersion of the neutral hydrogen which produces most of the observed absorption. The Lyman alpha line is too narrow to account for all of the observed absorption. It was previously known that extra absorption is needed…
We present results from a survey of the Lyman alpha forest at 2.15<z<3.26 toward ten QSOs concentrated within a 1 degree field. We find correlations of the Lyman alpha absorption line wavelengths between different lines-of-sight over the whole redshift range. This indicates the existence of large-scale structures in the Lyman alpha forest extending at least over ~36/h comoving Mpc in the plane of the sky, as may be expected from recent large scale structure simulations.
We summarise the results of a deep search for Lyman alpha emission from star-forming regions associated with damped Lyman alpha absorption systems and conclude that the Lyman alpha luminosity of high redshift galaxies is generally less than 10^(42) erg/s . We also present a newly discovered case, in the field of the QSO Q2059-360, where the emission is unusually strong, possibly because the damped system is close in redshift to the QSO.
A method for the recovery of the real space line-of-sight mass density field from Lyman absorption in QSO spectra is presented. The method makes use of a Lucy-type algorithm for the recovery of the HI density. The matter density is inferred from the HI density assuming that the absorption is due to a photoionized intergalactic medium which traces the mass distribution as suggested by recent numerical simulations. Redshift distortions are corrected iteratively from a simultaneous estimate of the peculiar velocity. The method is tested with mock spectra obtained from N-body simulations. The dens…
We announce the discovery of an extended emission line region associated with a high redshift type-2 QSO. The halo, which was discovered in our new wide-field narrow-band survey, resides at z = 2.85 in the Spitzer First Look Survey region and is extended over ~80 kpc. Deep VLBI observations imply that approximately 50 per cent of the radio emission is extended on scales > 200pc. The inferred AGN luminosity is sufficient to ionize the extended halo, and the optical emission is consistent with being triggered coevally with the radio source. The Lyman-alpha halo is as luminous as those found arou…
The spatial distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption systems towards ten QSOs has been analysed to search for large-scale structure over the redshift range 2.2 < z < 3.4. The QSOs form a closely spaced group on the sky and are concentrated within a 1 deg^2 field. We have employed a technique based on the first and second moments of the transmission probability density function which is capable of identifying and assessing the significance of regions of over- or underdense Ly-alpha absorption. We find evidence for large-scale structure in the distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption at the …
We present new VLA C-configuration HI imaging of the Lyman Alpha-emitting starburst galaxies Tol 1924-416 and IRAS 08339+6517. The effective resolution probes neutral gas structures larger than 4.7 kpc in Tol 1924-416, and larger than 8.1 kpc in IRAS 08339+6517. Both systems are revealed to be tidally interacting: Tol 1924-416 with ESO 338-IG04B (6.6 arcminutes = 72 kpc minimum separation), and IRAS 08339+6517 with 2MASX J08380769+6508579 (2.4 arcminutes = 56 kpc minimum separation). The HI emission is extended in these systems, with tidal tails and debris between the target galaxies and their…
HST observations of some QSOs show a strong, abrupt increase in polarization at rest wavelength about 750 A, suggestive of a connection with the Lyman edge of hydrogen. Blaes and Agol (1996) have proposed an explanation in terms of stellar atmosphere effects in an accretion disk around a supermassive black hole. We have computed the polarized spectrum of a such a disk, including the effects of the relativistic transfer function. Relativistic effects add an additional blueshift of the polarization rise sufficient that the model cannot explain the observations. A good fit results if the emitted …
We present the first measurement of the faint end of the QSO luminosity function at z=3. The QSOs, which range from M_1450 = -21 to M_1450 = -27, were discovered in 17 fields totaling 0.43 deg^2 using multicolor selection criteria (the Lyman break technique) and spectroscopic followup. We find that the faint-end slope of the luminosity function is beta_l=1.24 +/- 0.07, flatter than the value of beta_l=1.64 +/- 0.18 measured at lower redshift. The integrated rest 1450 A UV luminosity of z=3 QSOs is only 50% of most previous estimates, and is only ~8% of that produced by Lyman break galaxies at …
The spectrum of the Q0055-269 ($z=3.66$) has been observed at the resolution of 14 km s$^{-1}$ in the wavelength interval 4750--6300 Å. The statistical distribution of the Doppler parameter for the Ly$_α$ lines is peaked at $b\simeq 23$ km s$^{-1}$. The column density distribution is described by a power-law with a break at $\log N_{HI} \simeq 14.5$. Significant clustering, with $ξ\simeq 1$ at $Δv=100$ km s$^{-1}$, is detected for lines with $\log N_{HI} \geq 13.8$. Two voids of size $\sim 2000$ km s$^{-1}$ are found in the spectrum with a probability of $2\times 10^{-4}$.
We have conducted a long slit search for low surface brightness Lyman-alpha emitters at redshift 2.67 < z < 3.75. A 92 hour long exposure with VLT/FORS2 down to a 1-sigma surface brightness detection limit of 8x10^-20 erg/cm2/s/sqarcsec yielded a sample of 27 single line emitters with fluxes of a few times 10^-18 erg/s/cm2. We present arguments that most objects are indeed Lyman-alpha. The large comoving number density, the large covering factor, dN/dz ~ 0.2-1, and the often extended Lyman-alpha emission suggest that the emitters be identified with the elusive host population of damped Lyman-a…
We present a list of z_abs ~ z_em (Delta v < 3000 km/s) DLAs discovered during the CORALS survey for absorbers in a radio-selected QSO sample. On the assumption that z_abs ~ z_em DLAs are neither ejecta from the QSO, nor part of the host galaxy itself, we use the number density statistics of these DLAs to investigate galaxy clustering near the QSO redshift. We find that n(z) of z_abs z_em DLAs in our radio-selected QSO sample is ~4 times larger than the number density of intervening DLAs, implying an excess of galaxies near the QSO. This result is further supported with the inclusion of the ra…
We present here new GHRS observations of Lyman-alpha absorption lines associated with groups or clusters toward the QSOs 1545+2101 and 0850+4400. In the first case we have identified at least eight distinct Lyman-alpha absorption features, with a mean redshift of <z> = 0.2648 \pm 0.0002 and a velocity dispersion of 163 \pm 57 km/s. We have also identified a group or cluster of galaxies in the vicinity of this QSO with a mean redshift of <z> = 0.2643 \pm 0.0004 and velocity dispersion 223 \pm 91 km/s . The spectrum of QSO 0850+4400, of poorer quality, reveals two Lyman-alpha absorption features…
We present the highest quality Lyman Alpha forest spectra published to date, from the QSO HS 1946+7658. The distribution of H I column densities is a power law of slope -1.5 from Log N = 12.1 - 14. This power law can extend to N = 0, because lines weaker than Log N = 12.1 do not have a large H I optical depth. Low column lines with Log N > 9 could account for all observed He II absorption, but lines with Log N > 12 alone are unlikely to do so. The b distribution between 20 and 60 km/sec is a Gaussian with a mean of 23 km/sec (less than reported in past at this z), and a sigma b of 14 km/sec. W…
The flux power spectra of the Lyman-alpha forest from a sample of 27 QSOs taken with the high resolution echelle spectrograph UVES on VLT are presented. We find a similar fluctuation amplitude at the peak of the ``3D'' flux power spectrum at k ~ 0.03 (km/sec)^(-1) as the study by Croft et al. (2002), in the same redshift range. The amplitude of the flux power spectrum increases with decreasing redshift if corrected for the increase in the mean flux level as expected if the evolution of the flux power spectrum is sensitive to the gravitational growth of matter density fluctuations. This is in a…
The effective recombination coefficient, alpha_eff, is refined for optically thin cases. Radiation pressure in Lyman-alpha and HeII Lyman-alpha is calculated in terms of the number density and the mean free path. Pressure equilibrium between Lyman-alpha clouds and an adiabatically expanding inter-galactic medium is assumed, n_i T_i = n_c T_c. Numerical models of isothermal and adiabatic expanding Lyman-alpha forest clouds are presented, including evolving UV sources (QSOs), with various turn-on times z_on = 20, 10, and 5, and with q_0 = 1/2 in a matter-dominated Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Univ…
We present new spectroscopic observations of the quasar Q2059-360, confirming the existence of an emission feature within the Damped Lyman Alpha (DLA) absorption trough. By observing also at slit positions offset from the quasar, we show that the emission is spatially extended by at least a few arcseconds, and hence confirm that the feature seen must be due to emission rather than unusual absorption characteristics. We find that the DLA trough is very close in redshift to the broad Lyman~$α$ emission line of the QSO, with the result that the DLA absorption removes much of the peak region of th…
We present a new ultra-violet spectrum of the QSO 0013-004 with 0.9 Åresolution obtained with the MMT Blue spectrograph. The \upsilon = 0 - 0, 1 - 0, 2 - 0 and 3 - 0 Lyman bands of H_2 associated with the z = 1.9731 damped Ly alpah absorption line system have been detected. The H_2 column density is N(H_2) = 6.9 (\pm 1.6)\times 10^{19} cm^{-2}, and the Doppler parameter b = 15\pm 2 km/s. The populations of different rotational levels are measured and used to derive the excitation temperatures. The estimated kinetic temperature T_K\sim 70 K, and the total particle number density n(H) \sim 300 c…
The spectrum of the quasar Q0055-269 ($z=3.66$) has been observed at the resolution of 14 km s$^{-1}$ in the wavelength interval 4750--6300 Å. We give a list of Lyman$-α$ lines and metal-line systems for which column densities and Doppler widths have been derived by a fitting procedure. The statistical distribution of the Doppler parameter for the Lyman$-α$ lines is peaked at $b\simeq 23$ km s$^{-1}$, with 13\% of lines with $15\leq b\leq 20$ km s$^{-1}$. The column density distribution of the Lyman$-α$ lines is described by a power-law with a break or cutoff at $\log N_{HI} \simeq 14.5$. A fe…
We investigate the dependence of QSO Lyman-alpha absorption features on the temperature of the absorbing gas and on the amplitude of the underlying dark matter fluctuations. We use high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations in cold dark matter dominated cosmological models. In models with a hotter intergalactic medium (IGM), the increased temperature enhances the pressure gradients between low and high density regions and this changes the spatial distribution and the velocity field of the gas. Combined with more thermal broadening, this leads to significantly wider absorption features in hotter …
We have searched the broad-absorption-line quasar (BAL QSO) sample presented by Reichard et al. for objects exhibiting the so-called `ghost of Lyman alpha'. This ghost manifests as a hump near -5900kms in the troughs of the broad absorption lines and provides strong evidence for the importance of line-driving in powering the outflows from BAL QSOs. Of the 224 sample BAL QSOs selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Early Data Release (EDR), 198 satisfy our redshift constraints and 58 show clear evidence of multiple-trough (MT) structure in the CIV line. A composite spectrum constructe…
The calculation of the transmission power spectrum of QSO's Lyman alpha absorption requires two parameters for the normalization: the continuum Fc and mean transmission, i.e. average of e^{-tau}. Traditionally, the continuum is obtained by a polynomial fitting truncating it at a lower order, and the mean transmission is calculated over the entire wavelength range considered. The flux F is then normalized by the average of Fc e^{-tau}. However, the fluctuations in the transmitted flux are significantly correlated with the local background flux on scales for which the field is intermittent. In t…
We report the detection of a nearby emission-line companion to the z=4.695 quasar BR1202-0725. Deep narrow-band exposures on this field from the UH 2.2 m show a Ly alpha flux of 1.5\times\ten{-16} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}. High-resolution HST WFC2 imaging in the F814W filter band shows continuum structure near the emission position, at 2.6" NW of the quasar, corresponding to a projected separation of ~7.5 h^{-1} kpc for \qnought=0.5, where h=\hnought/100\kms Mpc^{-1}. We discuss possible explanations for the combined line and color properties. The ionization is most likely produced by the quasar, b…
We have completed spectroscopic observations using LRIS on the Keck 1 telescope of 30 very high redshift quasars, 11 selected for the presence of damped Ly-alpha absorption systems and 19 with redshifts z > 3.5 not previously surveyed for absorption systems. We have surveyed an additional 10 QSOs with the Lick 120'' and the Anglo-Australian Telescope. We have combined these with previous data resulting in a statistical sample of 646 QSOs and 85 damped Ly-alpha absorbers with column densities N(HI) >= 2 x 10^20 atoms/cm^2 covering the redshift range 0.008 <= z <= 4.694. To make the data in our …
I report on observations of the z=0.01 dwarf galaxy SBS1543+593 which is projected onto the background QSO HS1543+5921. As a star-forming galaxy first noted in emission, this dwarf is playing a pivotal role in our understanding of high-redshift galaxy populations, because it also gives rise to a Damped Lyman Alpha system. This enabled us to analyze, for the first time, the chemical abundance of $α$ elements in a Damped Lyman Alpha galaxy using both, emission and absorption diagnostics. We find that the abundances agree with one another within the observational uncertainties. I discuss the impl…
Quasar absorption lines have long been recognized to be a sensitive probe of the abundances, physical conditions, and kinematics of gas in a wide variety of environments including low-density intergalactic regions that probably cannot be studied by any other means. While some pre-Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations indicated that Mg II absorption lines arise in gaseous galactic halos with a large covering factor, many early QSO absorber studies were hampered by a lack of information about the context of the absorbers and their connections with galaxies. By providing access to crucial ult…
We describe a robust Bayesian statistical method for determining Lyman alpha forest cloud sizes in spherical and in thin disk geometries, using absorption in adjacent sightlines toward closely separated QSO pairs and groups, apply this method to the available data, and discuss implications of our results for models of Ly alpha clouds. Under the assumption of a population of uniform- size and unclustered clouds, the data from Q1343+2640A/B give a 99% confidence lower and upper bounds 61<R<533 kpc/h on the radius of spherical clouds at z about 1.8, with a median value of 149 kpc/h [$(Ω_0, Λ_0) =…
We detail a powerful indirect method for the study of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) at low redshift. We increase the probability of finding a low-redshift DLA to nearly 50% by targeting QSOs that are known to have strong low-redshift MgII and FeII absorption lines in their spectra. We are using Sloan Digital Sky Survey QSO spectra complemented by a survey we are conducting at the MMT to study the metal-line systems. The Hubble Space Telescope is being used to confirm low-redshift DLAs. In addition, we are imaging low-redshift DLA galaxies with several ground-based telescopes to directly st…
