We have grown single crystals of EuFe2As2 and investigated its electrical transport and thermodynamic properties. Electrical resistivity and specific heat measurements clearly establish the intrinsic nature of magnetic phase transitions at 20 K and 195 K. While the high temperature phase transition is associated with the itinerant moment of Fe, the low temperature phase transition is due to magnetic order of localized Eu-moments. Band structure calculations point out a very close similarity of the electronic structure with SrFe2As2. Magnetically, the Eu and Fe2As2 sublattice are nearly de-coupled.
High-pressure electrical resistivity measurements up to 3.0GPa have been performed on EuFe2As2 single crystals with residual resistivity ratios RRR=7 and 15. At ambient pressure, a magnetic / structural transition related to FeAs-layers is observed at T0 =190K and 194K for samples with RRR=7 and 15, respectively. Application of hydrostatic pressure suppresses T0, and then induces similar superconducting behavior in the samples with different RRR values. However, the critical pressure 2.7GPa, where T0=0, for the samples with RRR=15 is slightly but distinctly larger than 2.5GPa for the samples w…
The thermal fluctuations of the electric field between the CuO_2 planes of layered cuprates are considered as an origin of the electrical resistivity. The model evaluation employs a set of separate plane capacitors each having area equal to the squared in-plane lattice constant a_0^2. It is shown that the scattering of charge carriers by the fluctuation of electric charge in the conducting CuO_2 planes gives rise to the in-plane electrical resistivity rho_ab. Such a mechanism can be viewed as an analog of the Rayleigh's blue-sky law---the charge carriers are scattered by thermal fluctuations o…
We report measurements of the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity, ρ(T), and magnetic penetration depth, λ(T), for polycrystalline samples of Eu_0.5K_0.5Fe_2As_2 with Tc=31 K. $ρ(T)$ follows a linear temperature dependence above T_c and bends over to a weaker temperature dependence around 150 K. The magnetic penetration depth, determined by radio frequency technique displays an unusual minimum around 4 K which is associated with short-range ordering of localized Eu3+ moments.
Single crystals of LaFeAsO were successfully grown out of KI flux. Temperature dependent electrical resistivity was measured with current flow along the basal plane, ρ_perpend(T), as well as with current flow along the crystallographic c-axis, ρ_parallel(T), the latter one utilizing electron beam lithography and argon ion beam milling. The anisotropy ratio was found to lie between ρ_parallel/ρ_perpend = 20 - 200. The measurement of ρ_perpend(T) was performed with current flow along the tetragonal [1 0 0] direction and along the [1 1 0] direction and revealed a clear in-plane anisotropy already…
We analyze the DC charge transport in the quantum critical regime near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability in two dimensions. The transport decay rate is linear in temperature everywhere on the Fermi surface except at cold spots on the Brillouin zone diagonal. For pure systems, this leads to a DC resistivity proportional to T^{3/2} in the low-temperature limit. In the presence of impurities the residual impurity resistance at T=0 is approached linearly at low temperatures.
We carried out simultaneous measurements of electrical resistivity and thermal expansion of the heavy-fermion compound URu2Si2 under pressure using a single crystal. We observed a phase transition anomaly between hidden (HO) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered states at TM in the temperature dependence of both measurements. For the electrical resistivity, the anomaly at TM was very small compared with the distinct hump anomaly at the phase transition temperature T0 between the paramagnetic state (PM) and HO, and exhibited only a slight increase and decrease for the I // a-axis and c-axis, resp…
Electrolysis was carried out on fused mixtures of MgCl2, NaCl, KCl and MgB2O4 under an Ar flow at 600C. Electrical resistivity measurements for the grown deposits show an onset of superconducting transition at 37 K in the absence of applied magnetic field. The resistivity decreases down to zero below 32 K. From an applied-field dependence of resistivity, an upper critical field and a coherence length were calculated to be 9.7 T and 5.9 nm at 0 K, respectively.
Multiple unconventional superconducting phases are suspected to be driven by magnetic fluctuations in the heavy-fermion paramagnet UTe$_2$, and a challenge is to identify the signatures of the electronic correlations, including the magnetic fluctuations, in the bulk physical quantities. Here, we investigate thoroughly the anisotropy of the electrical resistivity of UTe$_2$ under intense magnetic fields up to 70~T, for different electrical-current and magnetic-field configurations. Two characteristic temperatures and an anisotropic low-temperature Fermi-liquid-like coefficient $A$, controlled b…
Intrinsic, in-plane anisotropy of electrical resistivity was studied on mechanically detwinned single crystals of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ above and below the temperature of the coupled structural/magnetic transition, $T_{\textrm{TO}}$. Resistivity is smaller for electrical current flow along the orthorhombic $a_o$ direction (direction of antiferromagnetically alternating magnetic moments) and is larger for transport along the $b_o$ direction (direction of ferromagnetic chains), which is similar to CaFe$_2$As$_2$ and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds. A strongly first order structural transition in SrFe$_2$As$_2…
Temperature dependence of resistivity of single crystals of Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Se and FeSe$_{1-y}$S$_y$ is studied in detail under zero and high magnetic field (magnetoresistance), the latter of which enables to monitor the temperature ($T$) evolution of resistivity below the onset of superconducting transition temperature ($T_{\rm c}$). In FeSe$_{1-y}$S$_y$, $T$-linear dependence of resistivity is prominent in $y$ = 0.160 below 40 K, whereas it changes to a Fermi-liquid(FL)-like $T^2$ one below 10 K in $y$ = 0.212. These suggest that the quantum critical point (QCP) originating from the electron…
The effects of planar hole concentration, p, and in-plane disorder, Zn (y), on the DC resistivity, r(T), of sintered samples of Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Zn_y)_3O_{7-d} were investigated over a wide doping range by changing both the oxygen deficiency (d) and Ca content (x). From the r(T,p) data we extracted characteristic crossover temperatures on the underdoped and overdoped sides, T* and T_m respectively, above which r(T) is linear. We compare our results with a number of other polycrystalline, thin film and single crystal cuprate superconductors and find similar behavior in the p-dependence o…
The filled skutterudite compound PrOs4Sb12, the first example of a Pr-based heavy fermion superconductor, displays superconductivity with $T_c\sim 1.85$ K and has an effective mass $m^* \sim$ {50 $m_e$}, where $m_e$ is the free electron mass. For magnetic fields above 4.5 T, sharp features in the normal state electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and thermal expansion data suggest the occurrence of a phase transition at high fields. This high field ordered phase in the normal state may originate from a combination of crystalline electric field enhanced Zeeman splitting and quad…
The problem of constructing the kinetic equation with the description of motion of a hole in systems with strong spin- hole interaction (such as high- temperature superconductors) in terms of the spin polaron has been considered in the framework of the regular antiferromagnetic $s-d$ model. It has been shown by the example of the electrical resistivity that kinetics is determined by the properties of the bands of the spin polaron (rather than "bar hole") and their quasiparticle residues $Z_{k}$. The cases of low and optimal doping of the $CuO_{2}$ plane have been considered. It has been shown …
The ground state properties of CeCoPO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO1-xFx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity measurements on polycrystals. The observation of a well defined Curie-Weiss behavior above 230K with mu_eff=2.9mu_B and a ferromagnetic ordering below T_C=75K is similar to what was observed in LaCoPO and points to magnetism of the Co-3d electrons. However, the Ce-ions are on the border to magnetism with a Kondo scale of T_K~40K and show an enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient of γ~200mJ/molK^2.
The high anisotropy in RO1-aFaBiS2 (R denotes a rare-earth element) superconductors demonstrates their potential use as intrinsic Josephson junctions, considering the weak coupling among BiS2-PrO(F)-BiS2 (superconducting-normal-superconducting) layers along the c-axis. We grew PrO1-aFaBiS2 single crystals using CsCl/KCl flux. The superconducting anisotropies of the grown single crystals were estimated to be approximately 40-50 from the effective mass model. The c-axis transport properties were characterized using single-crystal s-shaped intrinsic Josephson junctions with a focused ion beam. Al…
We investigate the manifestation of the stripes in the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in untwinned single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0.02 - 0.04) and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35 - 7.0). It is found that both systems show strongly temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy in the lightly hole-doped region and that the anisotropy in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} grows with decreasing y below about 6.60 despite the decreasing orthorhombicity, which gives most direct evidence that electrons self-organize into a macroscopically anisotropic state. The transport is found to be easier along the dire…
Ta$_{2}$S$_{2}$C compound undergoes superconducting transitions at $T_{cl} = 3.60 \pm 0.02$ K and $T_{cu} = 9.0 \pm 0.2$ K. The nature of successive superconducting transitions has been studied from electrical resistivity, linear and nonlinear AC magnetic susceptibilities. The resistivity $ρ$ at $H$ = 0 shows a local maximum near $T_{cu}$, a kink-like behavior around $T_{cl}$, and reduces to zero at below $T_{0}$ = 2.1 K. The $\ln T$ dependence of $ρ$ is observed at $H$ = 50 kOe at low temperatures, which is due to two-dimensional weak-localization effect. Below $T_{cu}$ a two-dimensional supe…

Preliminary evidence for the occurrence of high-Tc superconductivity in alkali-doped organic materials, such as potassium-doped p-terphenyl (KPT), were recently obtained by magnetic susceptibility measurements and by the opening of a large superconducting gap as measured by ARPES and STM techniques. In this work, KPT samples have been synthesized by a chemical method and characterized by low-temperature Raman scattering and resistivity measurements. Here, we report the occurrence of a resistivity drop of more than 4 orders of magnitude at low temperatures in KPT samples in the form of compress…
We calculate the temperature dependence of NMR relaxation rate and electrical resistivity for coupling to a local, strongly anharmonic phonon mode. We argue that the two-phonon Raman process is dominating NMR relaxation. Due to the strong anharmonicity of the phonon an unusual temperature dependence is found having a low temperature peak and becoming constant towards higher temperatures. The electrical resistivity is found to vary like T^2 at low temperatures and following a sqrt{T} behavior at high temperatures. Both results are in qualitative agreement with recent observations on beta-pyroch…
Sizable single crystals of $BaFe_2As_2$ have been grown with self-flux method. The crystals are plate-like with c-axis perpendicular to the plane. The size can be as large as 3 x 5 x 0.2 $mm^3$. The resistivity anisotropy ($ρ_c/ρ_{ab}$) is as large as about 150, and independent of temperature. The transport in ab plane and along c-axis direction shares the same scattering mechanism. In contrast to the magnetic behavior of polycrystalline samples, no Curie-Weiss behavior are observed, a temperature linear dependent susceptibility occurs above spin-density-wave (SDW) transition. The susceptibili…
Polycrystalline samples of LiBC compounds, which were predicted as possible candidate for high-Tc superconductivity, have been synthesised by a flux method and investigated by means of electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction patterns showed a plate-like morphology and a single-phase nature of LiBC samples for starting composition of Li1.25BC (flux composition). The lattice constants a, c display a systematic variation with x and has maximum volume of the hexagonal unit cell at x = 1.25. Electrical resistivity measurements revealed …
We report electrical resistivity measurements and neutron diffraction studies under magnetic fields of Bi$_{1.75}$Pb$_{0.35}$Sr$_{1.90}$Cu$_{0.91}$Fe$_{0.09}$O$_{6+y}$, in which hole carriers are overdoped. This compound shows short-range incommensurate magnetic correlation with incommensurability $δ=0.21$, whereas a Fe-free compound shows no magnetic correlation. Resistivity shows an up turn at low temperature in the form of $ln(1/T)$ and shows no superconductivity. We observe reduction of resistivity by applying magnetic fields (i.e., a negative magnetoresistive effect) at temperatures below…
We have investigated Se substitution effect to superconductivity of an optimally-doped BiS2-based superconductor Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2. Eu0.5La0.5FBiS2-xSex samples with x = 0-1 were synthesized. With increasing x, in-plane chemical pressure is enhanced. For x = 0.6, 0.8, and 1, superconducting transitions with a large shielding volume fraction are observed in magnetic susceptibility measurements, and the highest Tc is 3.8 K for x = 0.8. From low-temperature electrical resistivity measurements, a zero-resistivity state is observed for all the samples, and the highest Tc is observed for x = 0.8. With…
Based on a systematic analysis of the thermal evolution of the resistivities of Fe-based chalcogenides Fe$_{1+δ}$Te$_{1-x}X_{x}$ ($X$= Se, S), it is inferred that their often observed nonmetallic resistivities are related to a presence of two resistive channels: one is a high-temperature thermally-activated process while the other is a low-temperature log-in-$T$ process. On lowering temperature, there are often two metal-to-nonmetall crossover events: one from the high-$T$ thermally-activated nonmetallic regime into a metal-like phase and the other from the log-in-$T$ regime into a second meta…
We have investigated the high-temperature thermoelectric properties of the layered compound LaO1-xFxBiS2. The electrical resistivity of LaOBiS2 showed an anomalous behavior; a metal-semiconductor transition was observed around 270 K. It was found that the value of the electrical resistivity decreased with F substitution. The Seebeck coefficient decreased with increasing F concentration. The highest power factor of 1.9 W/cmK2 at 480 C was obtained for LaOBiS2.
Temperature dependence of the in-plane electrical resistivity, $ρ_{\rm ab}$, in various magnetic fields has been measured in the single-crystal La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x=0.08$, 0.10, 0.11 and La$_{1.6-x}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ with $x=0.12$. It has been found that the superconducting transition curve shows a so-called fan-shape broadening in magnetic fields for $x=0.08$, while it shifts toward the low-temperature side in parallel with increasing field for $x=0.11$ and 0.12 where the charge-spin stripe order is formed at low temperatures. As for $x=0.10$, the broadening is observed in lo…
We have synthesized two iron-pnictide/chalcogenide materials, CuFeTe2 and Fe2As, which share crystallographic features with known iron-based superconductors, and carried out high-pressure electrical resistivity measurements on these materials to pressures in excess of 30 GPa. Both compounds crystallize in the Cu2Sb-type crystal structure that is characteristic of LiFeAs (with CuFeTe2 exhibiting a disordered variant). At ambient pressure, CuFeTe2 is a semiconductor and has been suggested to exhibit a spin-density-wave transition, while Fe2As is a metallic antiferromagnet. The electrical resisti…
