We report far-infrared reflectance measurements on polycrystalline superconducting samples of SmO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs ($x$ = 0.12, 0.15 and 0.2). We clearly observe superconductivity induced changes of reflectivity in a broad range of energies, which resembles earlier optical measurements on high $T_{c}$ cuprates. The superconducting-to-normal reflectivity ratio $R_{s}/R_{n}$ grows for the photon energies below 18 meV and shows a complicated structure due to the presence of a strong infrared-active phonon at about 10 meV.
Here we report the superconductivity in the iron-based oxyarsenide Sm[O1-xFx]FeAs, with the onset resistivity transition temperature at 55.0 K and Meissner transition at 54.6 K. This compound has the same crystal structure as LaOFeAs with shrunk crystal lattices, and becomes the superconductor with the highest critical temperature among all materials besides copper oxides.
We report superconductivity in polycrystalline samples of the 1038-type compounds (Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$)$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) up to T$_c$ = 35 K with RE = Y, La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Lu. The critical temperatures are independent of the trivalent rare earth element used, yielding an universal T$_c$($x$) phase diagram for electron doping in all these systems. The absence of superconductivity in Eu$^{2+}$ doped samples, as well as the close resemblance of (Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$)$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) to the 1048 compound substantiate that the electron doping scenario in the RE-1038 and 1048 …
In this paper we report the fabrication and superconducting properties of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs. It is found that when x is equal to 0.17, GdO$_{0.83}$F$_{0.17}$FeAs is a superconductor with the onset transition temperature T$_{c}^{on}\approx$ 36.6K. Resistivity anomaly near 130K was observed for all samples up to x = 0.17, such a phenomenon is similar to that of LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs. Hall coefficient indicates that GdO$_{0.83}$F$_{0.17}$FeAs is conducted by electron-like charge carriers.
The recently discovered FeAs-based superconductors are a new, promising set of materials for both technological as well as basic research. They offer transition temperatures as high as 55 K as well as essentially isotropic and extremely large upper, superconducting critical fields in excess of 40 T at 20 K. In addition they may well provide insight into exotic superconductivity that extends beyond just FeAs-based superconductivity, perhaps even shedding light on the still perplexing CuO-based high-Tc materials. Whereas superconductivity can be induced in the RFeAsO (R = rare earth) and AEFe2As…
We present a theoretical study of restoration of superconductivity in the form of the triplet reentrant superconducting phase in a quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) conductor. Substitution of known band and superconducting parameters of the presumably triplet Q1D superconductor Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ into our theoretical equations shows that such restoration can happen in feasibly high non-destructive pulsed magnetic field of the order of $H \simeq 100 \ T$. We investigate in detail how small inclinations of a direction of a magnetic field from its best experimental geometry decrease superconducti…
Interfacial phonons between iron-based superconductors (FeSCs) and perovskite substrates have received considerable attention due to the possibility of enhancing preexisting superconductivity. Using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we studied the correlation between superconductivity and e-ph interaction with interfacial-phonons in an iron-based superconductor Sr$_2$VO$_3$FeAs ($T_c \approx$ 33 K) made of alternating FeSC and oxide layers. The quasiparticle interference measurement over regions with systematically different average superconducting gaps due to the e-ph coupling locally modulate…
We have studied current-voltage characteristics of Andreev contacts in polycrystalline GdO$_{0.88}$F$_{0.12}$FeAs samples with bulk critical temperature ${T_c}$ = (52.5 \pm 1)K using break-junction technique. The data obtained cannot be described within the single-gap approach and suggests the existence of a multi-gap superconductivity in this compound. The large and small superconducting gap values estimated at T = 4.2K are ΔL = 10.5 \pm 2 meV and ΔS = 2.3 \pm 0.4 meV, respectively.
We have successfully synthesized the fluoride-arsenide compounds Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF (RE=Nd, Pr; x=0, 0.6). The x-ray powder diffraction confirmed that the main phases of our samples are Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs structure. By measuring resistivity, superconductivity was observed at 57.4 K in Nd-doped and 52.8 K in Pr-doped samples with x=0.6. Bulk superconductivity was also proved by the DC magnetization measurements in both samples. Hall effect measurements revealed hole-like charge carriers in the parent compound CaFeAsF with a clear resistivity anomaly below 118 K, while th…
Superconducting epitaxial films of Fe-based layered arsenide, Co-doped SrFe2As2, were grown at 700oC on mixed perovskite (La, Sr)(Al, Ta)O3 (001) single-crystal substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. Both the epitaxial film and an (001)-oriented film grown at 600oC exhibited superconducting transitions at ~ 20 K. The zero-resistance states of the epitaxial film were sustained under a magnetic field (H) of 9 T at 9 K when H was parallel to the c-axis, while they were sustained at higher temperatures up to 10 K for H parallel to the a-axis. This is the first demonstration of superconducting thin…
The recently discovered quaternary arsenide oxide superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition temperature (Tc) of 26 K [1], has been quickly expanded to another high-Tc superconducting system beyond copper oxides by the replacement of La with other rare earth elements, such as Sm, Ce, and Pr etc. [2-4], and the Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs has become to be the first non-cuprate superconductor that holding a Tc above 50 K. All these arsenide (including phosphide) superconductors formed in a same tetragonal layered structure with the space group P4/nmm which has an alternant sta…
Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a $(0, π)$ mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The superconducting pairing is found to be spin singlet, orbital even, and mixed s$_{xy}$ + d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ wave (even parity).
We report the $^{75}$As-NQR and NMR studies on the iron arsenide superconductor Li$_{x}$FeAs with $T_{\rm c} \sim 17$ K. The spin lattice relaxation rate, $1/T_{1}$, decreases below $T_{\rm c}$ without a coherence peak, and can be fitted by gaps with s$^{\pm}$-wave symmetry in the presence of impurity scattering. In the normal state, both $1/T_{1}T$ and the Knight shift decrease with decreasing temperature but become constant below $T \leq 50 K$. Estimate of the Korringa ratio shows that the spin correlations are weaker than that in other families of iron arsenides, which may account for the l…
Current-voltage characteristics and dynamic conductance of the superconductor - constriction - superconductor junctions in GdO(F)FeAs polycrystalline samples with critical temperatures Tc^local = 46 - 53 K were investigated. Two superconducting gaps, the large Delta_L = 10.5 +- 2 meV, and the small one Delta_S = 2.3 +- 0.4 meV were clearly observed at T = 4.2 K. The 2Delta_L/kTc^local = 5.5 +- 1 ratio gives support to the strong coupling mechanism which is responsible for the high Tc value. Temperature dependence of the large gap Delta_L(T) indicates the presence of intrinsic proximity effect …
Here we report the synthesis and basic characterization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO (x=0.10, 0.15). The parent compound SmFeAsO itself is not superconducting but shows an antiferromagnetic order near 150 K, which must be suppressed by doping before superconductivity emerges. With Co-doping in the FeAs planes, antiferromagnetic order is destroyed and superconductivity occurs at 15 K. Similar to LaFe1-xCoxAsO, the SmFe1-xCoxAsO system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the FeAs planes. This result is important, which indicates difference between cuprare superconductors and the iron-based arsenide…
To clarify superconductivity in EuFe2As2 hidden by antiferromagnetism of Eu2+, we investigated a Ca-substituted sample, Eu0.5Ca0.5Fe2As2, under high pressure. For ambient pressure, the sample exhibits a spin-density-wave (SDW) transition at TSDW = 191 K and antiferromagnetic order at TN = 4 K, but no evidence of superconductivity down to 2 K. The Ca-substitution certainly weakens the antiferromagnetism. With increasing pressure, TSDW shifts to lower temperature and becomes more unclear. Above 1.27 GPa, pressure-induced superconductivity with zero resistivity is observed at around Tc = 20 K. At…
We report 75As-NMR study on the Fe-pnictide high-Tc superconductor Y0.95La0.05FeAsO_{1-y} (Y0.95La0.051111) with Tc=50 K that includes no magnetic rare-earth elements. The measurement of the nuclear-spin lattice-relaxation rate 75(1/T1) has revealed that the nodeless bulk superconductivity takes place at Tc=50 K while antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations (AFSFs) develop moderately in the normal state. These features are consistently described by the multiple fully-gapped s_\pm-wave model based on the Fermi-surface (FS) nesting. Incorporating the theory based on band calculations, we propose tha…
We have synthesized a quaternary fluoroarsenide SrFeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs-type structure (P4/nmm, a = 0.3999 and c = 0.8973 nm), which is composed of an alternately stacked (FeAs)- and (SrF)+ layers, analogous to the FeAs-based superconductor LaFeAsO. SrFeAsF shows metallic type conduction with the anomaly at ~180 K. The partial replacement of the Fe with Co suppresses the anomaly and induces the superconductivity, while the maximal Tc (4 K for SrFe0.875Co0.125AsF) is much lower than that of the Co-substituted LaFeAsO. Replacement of (LaO)+ layers with (SrF)+ layers results in a enlargement of…
The Phase diagram of SmFeAsO1-xFx in terms of x is exhibited in this study. SmFeAsO1-xFx from x = 0 to x = 0.3 were prepared by low temperature sintering with slow cooling. The low temperature sintering suppresses the formation of the amorphous FeAs, which is inevitably produced as an impurity by using high temperature sintering. Moreover, slow cooling is effective to obtain the high fluorine concentration. The compositional change from feedstock composition is quite small after this synthesis. We can reproducibly observe a record superconducting transition for an iron based superconductor at …
It has been considered that FeAs-based high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors need electron or hole doping by aliovalent ion substitution or large off-stoichiometry in order to induce superconductivity. We report that exposure of undoped SrFe2As2 epitaxial thin films to water vapor induces a superconducting transition. These films exhibit a higher onset-Tc (25 K) and larger magnetic field anisotropy than those of cobalt-doped SrFe2As2 epitaxial films, suggesting that the mechanism for the observed superconducting transition differs from that of the aliovalent-ion doped SrFe2As2.…
In this paper we report the synthesis of iron-based superconductors CaFe2-xRhxAs2 using one-step solid state reaction method, which crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type structure with a space group I4/mmm. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants demonstrates that the Fe ions are successfully replaced by the Rh. By increasing the doping content of Rh, the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the parent compound is suppressed and superconductivity emerges. The maximum superconducting transition temperature is found at 18.5 K with the doping level of x = 0.15. The temperature dependence o…
The recently discovered compounds Ca10(Fe1-xPtxAs)10(Pt3+yAs8) exhibit superconductivity up to 38 K, and contain iron arsenide (FeAs) and platinum arsenide (Pt3+yAs8) layers separated by layers of Ca atoms. We show that high Tc's above 15 K only emerge if the iron-arsenide layers are at most free of platinum-substitution (x \rightarrow 0) in contrast to recent reports. In fact Pt-substitution is detrimental to higher Tc, which increases up to 38 K only by charge doping of pure FeAs layers. We point out, that two different negatively charged layers [(FeAs)10]n- and (Pt3+yAs8)m- compete for the …
In high-transition temperature (high-Tc) copper oxides, it is generally believed that antiferromagnetism plays a fundamental role in the superconducting mechanism because superconductivity occurs when mobile electrons or holes are doped into the antiferromagnetic parent compounds. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the rare-earth (R) iron-based oxide systems [RO1-xFxFeAs] has generated enormous interest because these materials are the first noncopper oxide superconductors with Tc exceeding 50 K. The parent (nonsuperconducting) LaOFeAs material is metallic but shows anomalies near 150…
We present measurements of the temperature and field dependencies of the magnetization M(T,H) of Nd(O0.89F0.11)FeAs at fields up to 33T, which show that superconductivity with the critical temperature Tc ~ 51K cannot coexist with antiferromagnetic ordering. Although M(T,H) at 55 < T < 140K exhibits a clear Curie-Weiss temperature dependence corresponding to the Neel temperature TN ~ 11-12K, the behavior of M(T,H) below Tc is only consistent with either paramagnetism of weakly interacting magnetic moments or a spin glass state. We suggest that the anomalous magnetic behavior of an unusual high-…
We report density functional theory calculations for the parent compound LaOFeAs of the newly discovered 26K Fe-based superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs. We find that the ground state is an ordered antiferromagnet, with staggered moment about 2.3$μ_B$, on the border with the Mott insulating state. We fit the bands crossing the Fermi surface, derived from Fe and As, to a tight-binding Hamiltonian using maximally localized Wannier functions on Fe 3d and As 4p orbitals. The model Hamiltonian accurately describes the Fermi surface obtained via first-principles calculations. Due to the evident pro…
Since the discovery of copper oxide superconductor in 1986 [1], extensive efforts have been devoted to the search of new high-Tc superconducting materials, especially high-Tc systems other than cuprates. The recently discovered quaternary superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition Tc of 26 K [2], which has a much simple layered structure compared with cuprates, has attracted quick enthusiasm and is going to become a new high-Tc system [3-6]. Here we report the discovery of bulk superconductivity in the praseodymium-arsenide oxides Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs with an onset dr…
The crystal structure of LnFeAsO$_{1-y}$ (Ln = La, Nd) has been studied by the powder neutron diffraction technique. The superconducting phase diagram of NdFeAsO$_{1-y}$ is established as a function of oxygen content which is determined by Rietveld refinement. The small As-Fe bond length suggests that As and Fe atoms are connected covalently. FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons transform toward a regular shape with increasing oxygen deficiency. Superconducting transition temperatures seem to attain maximum values for regular FeAs$_4$-tetrahedrons.
We report a $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) investigation of Na$_{x}$FeAs series ($x=1$, 0.9, 0.8) exhibiting a spin-density wave (SDW) order below $T_{\rm SDW}=45$, 50 and 43 K for $x=1$, 0.9, 0.8, respectively, and a bulk superconductivity below $T_c\approx 12$ K for x=0.9. Below $T_{\rm SDW}$, a spin-lattice relaxation reveals the presence of gapless particle-hole excitations in the whole $x$ range, meaning that a portion of the Fermi surface remains gapless. The superconducting fraction as deduced from the bulk susceptibility scales with this portion, while the SDW…
We report first principles calculations of the electronic structure, phonon dispersions and electron phonon coupling of LaNiPO. These calculations show that this material can be explained as a conventional electron phonon superconductor in contrast to the FeAs based high temperature superconductors.
One of the most popular scenarios for the superconductivity in Fe-based superconductors (FeBSC) posits that the bosons responsible for electronic pairing are spin-fluctuations with a wave vector spanning the hole Fermi surfaces (FSs) near $Γ$ and the electron FSs near M points. So far all FeBSC for which neutron data are available do demonstrate such excitations, and the band structure calculations so far were finding quasi-nested FSs in all FeBSC, providing for a peak in the spin susceptibility at the desired wave vectors. However, the newest addition to the family, Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs, has …
Superconducting transition under pressure ($P$) has been investigated for optimum-doped $R$FeAsO$_{\rm 1-x}$F$_{\rm x}$ ($R$=La, Ce$-$Sm) by dc magnetization measurements. For $R$=La, $T_{\rm c}$ is found to be pressure independent up to $P$$\sim$3.0 GPa and then shows a monotonic decrease with increasing pressure. The plateau width decreases for the system with smaller lattice constants, and shrinks to almost zero for $R$=Sm. From the $T_{\rm c}$($P$) data, we construct the $T_{\rm c}$ evolution map on the height of the As atom from the Fe-plane $h_{\rm As}$ versus lattice constant $a$ or $c$…
We report on the recovery of the short-range static magnetic order and on the concomitant degradation of the superconducting state in optimally F-doped SmFe_(1-x)Ru_(x)AsO_0.85F_0.15 for 0.1< x<0.6. The two reduced order parameters coexist within nanometer-size domains in the FeAs layers and finally disappear around a common critical threshold x_c=0.6. Superconductivity and magnetism are shown to be closely related to two distinct well-defined local electronic environments of the FeAs layers. The two transition temperatures, controlled by the isoelectronic and diamagnetic Ru substitution, scal…
We synthesized the samples $Ba_{1-x}M_xFe_2As_2$ (M=La and K) with $ThCr_2Si_2$-type structure. These samples were systematically characterized by resistivity, thermoelectic power (TEP) and Hall coefficient ($R_H$). $BaFe_2As_2$ shows an anomaly in resistivity at about 140 K. Substitution of La for Ba leads to a shift of the anomaly to low temperature, but no superconducting transition is observed. Potassium doping leads to suppression of the anomaly in resistivity and induces superconductivity at 38 K as reported by Rotter et al.\cite{rotter}. The Hall coefficient and TEP measurements indicat…
The in-plane resistivity $ρ$ and thermal conductivity $κ$ of FeAs-based superconductor KFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal were measured down to 50 mK. We observe non-Fermi-liquid behavior $ρ(T) \sim T^{1.5}$ at $H_{c_2}$ = 5 T, and the development of a Fermi liquid state with $ρ(T) \sim T^2$ when further increasing field. This suggests a field-induced quantum critical point, occurring at the superconducting upper critical field $H_{c_2}$. In zero field there is a large residual linear term $κ_0/T$, and the field dependence of $κ_0/T$ mimics that in d-wave cuprate superconductors. This indicates that…
A series of layered CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs compounds with x=0 to 0.20 are synthesized by solid state reaction method. Similar to the LaOFeAs, the pure CeOFeAs shows a strong resistivity anomaly near 145 K, which was ascribed to the spin-density-wave instability. F-doping suppresses this instability and leads to the superconducting ground state. Most surprisingly, the superconducting transition temperature could reach as high as 41 K. The very high superconducting transition temperature strongly challenges the classic BCS theory based on the electron-phonon interaction. The very closeness of the …
The effects of pressure on antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting phase transitions of 112-type Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$FeAs$_{2}$ were studied, and the in-plane electrical resistivity $ρ_{ab}$ was measured with an indenter-type pressure cell. The AFM phase transition temperatures of $T_{\rm N}$ = 47, 63, and 63 K at ambient pressure for $x$ = 0.18, 0.21, and 0.26 was suppressed by applying pressure $P$, with superconductivity emerging at critical pressures of $P_{\rm c}$ $\simeq$ 0, 1.5, and 3.4 GPa, respectively. Correspondingly, the slope of $T_{\rm N}$ against $P$ decreased as $dT_{\rm N}/P…
We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements on superconducting Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs under pressure. At ambient pressure, Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition of the V moments at $T_{N}$ and becomes superconducting at $T_{c}<T_{N}$. As a function of pressure, $T_{N}$ initially decreases while $T_{c}$ increases. Surprisingly, once $T_{N}\approx T_{c}$ at 0.6~GPa, $T_{N}$ reverses its trend and increases together with $T_{c}$ suggesting that the static V magnetism is a prerequisite for superconductivity. We explain this cooperative coupling by a p…
We report the successful substitution of cobalt, nickel, and copper for iron in the 1038 phase parent compound Ca$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) yielding Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), and Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), respectively. Superconductivity is induced in Co and Ni doped compounds reaching critical temperatures up to 15 K, similar to known Pt substituted Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), whereas no superconductivity was detected in Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt…
Superconducting properties of Co-co-doped (Ca,RE)FeAs2 ((Ca,RE)112: RE = La, Pr) were investigated. Co-co-doping increased Tc of (Ca,Pr)112 while Mn-co-doping suppressed superconductivity of (Ca,RE)112. Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 showed large diamagnetic screening and sharper superconducting transition than Co-free (Ca,La)112. Tczero observed in resistivity measurements increased from 14 K to 30 K by Co-co-doping, while Tconset was not increased. The critical current density (Jc) of Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 were approximately 2.1 x 104 Acm-2 and 3.2 x 103 Acm-2 at 2 K and 25 K, respectively, near ze…
In a recent Letter [J. K. Dong et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087005 (2010)], Dong \textit{et al}. have observed a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of resistivity $ρ$ in KFe$_2$As$_2$ at the upper critical field $B_{c2}$ = 5 T parallel to the c axis and have suggested the existence of a field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) at $B_{c2}$. In this comment, we argue that observation of a $T^{1.5}$ dependence of $ρ$ in a sample showing broad resistive transitions does not constitute evidence for a QCP and that recent dHvA results do not support the proposed QCP.
The mechanism of superconductivity in pnictides is discussed through direct doping in superconducting FeAs and also in charge reservoir REO layers. The un-doped SmFeAsO is charge neutral SDW (Spin Density Wave) compound with magnetic ordering below 150 K. The Superconducting FeAs layers are doped with Co and Ni at Fe site, whereas REO layers are doped with F at O site. The electron doping in SmFeAsO through Co results in superconductivity with transition temperature (Tc) maximum up to 15 K, whereas F doping results in Tc upto 47 K in SmFeAsO. All these REFe/Co/NiAsO/F compounds are iso-structu…
The ternary iron arsenide BaFe2As2 becomes superconducting by hole doping, which was achieved by partial substitution of the barium site with potassium. We have discovered bulk superconductivity up to Tc = 38 K in (Ba1-xKx)Fe2As2 with x = 0.4. The parent compound BaFe2As2 as well as KFe2As2 both crystallize in the tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure, which consists of (FeAs)- iron arsenide layers separated by barium or potassium ions. BaFe2As2 is a poor metal and exhibits a SDW anomaly at 140 K. By substituting Ba2+ for K+ ions we have introduced holes in the (FeAs)- layers, which suppress the …
Recent discovery of high T_c superconductivity in Fe-based compounds may have opened a new pathway to the room temperature superconductivity. The new materials feature FeAs layers instead of the signature CuO_2 planes of much-studied cuprates. A model Hamiltonian describing FeAs layers is introduced, highlighting the crucial role of puckering of As atoms in promoting d-electron itinerancy and warding off large local-moment magnetism of Fe ions, the main enemy of superconductivity. Quantum many-particle effects in charge, spin and multiband channels are explored and a nesting-induced spin densi…
Here we report the synthesis and basic characterization of LaFe1-xCoxAsO for several values of x. The parent phase LaFeAsO orders antiferromagnetically (TN ~ 145 K). Replacing Fe with Co is expected to both electron dope the system and introduce disorder in the FeAs layer. For x = 0.05 antiferromagnetic order is destroyed and superconductivity is observed at Tconset = 11.2 K. For x = 0.11 superconductivity is observed at Tc(onset) = 14.3 K, and for x = 0.15 Tc = 6.0 K. Superconductivity is not observed for x = 0.2 and 0.5, but for x = 1, the material appears to be ferromagnetic (Tc ~ 56 K) as …
We report resistivity and upper critical field B_c2(T) data for As deficient LaO_(0.9)F_(0.1)FeAs_(1-delta) in a wide temperature and high field range up to 60 T. These disordered samples exhibit a slightly enhanced superconducting transition at T_c = 29 K and a significantly enlarged slope dB_(c2))/dT = -5.4 T/K near T_c which contrasts with a flattening of B_(c2)(T) starting near 23 K above 30 T. This flattening is interpreted as Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_(c2)(0) approx 63 T. We compare our results with B_(c2)(T)-data reported in the literature for clean and disordered samples. W…
Low-temperature specific heat (SH) and resistivity were measured on Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 single crystals in wide doping region. A sizeable residual specific heat coefficient γ_0 was observed in the low temperature limit of all samples. The specific heat jump near T_c, i.e. ΔC/T|_{T_c} and the upper critical field H_{c2}^c (H||c) were also determined. It is found that -γ_0, ΔC/T|_{T_c}, \sqrt{H_{c2}^c} and T_c all shared a similar evolution with doping. All these can be well understood within the model of S$^\pm$ pairing symmetry when accounting the Co-dopants as unitary scattering centers in…
Superconductivity was achieved in Ti-doped iron-arsenide compound Sr4Cr0.8Ti1.2O6Fe2As2 (abbreviated as Cr-FeAs-42622). The x-ray diffraction measurement shows that this material has a layered structure with the space group of \emph{P4/nmm}, and with the lattice constants a = b = 3.9003 A and c = 15.8376 A. Clear diamagnetic signals in ac susceptibility data and zero-resistance in resistivity data were detected at about 6 K, confirming the occurrence of bulk superconductivity. Meanwhile we observed a superconducting transition in the resistive data with the onset transition temperature at 29.2…
The density functional theory for superconductors developed in the preceding article [cond-mat/0408685] is applied to the calculation of superconducting properties of several elemental metals. In particular, we present results for the transition temperature, for the gap at zero temperature, and for thermodynamic properties like the specific heat. We obtain an unprecedented agreement with experimental results. Superconductors both with strong and weak electron-phonon coupling are equally well described. This demonstrates that, as far as conventional superconductivity is concerned, the first-pri…
$^{19}$F NMR measurements in optimally electron-doped La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$AsO$_{0.89}$F$_{0.11}$ superconductors are presented. In these materials the effect of Mn doping on the superconducting phase is studied for two series of compounds ($y= 0$ and $y= 0.2$) where the chemical pressure is varied by substituting La with Y. In the $y=0.2$ series superconductivity is suppressed for Mn contents an order of magnitude larger than for the $y=0$ series. For both series a peak in the $^{19}$F NMR nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ emerges upon Mn doping and gets significantly…
We discover a robust coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in an iron arsenide RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$. The new material crystallizes in an intergrowth structure of RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$As$_2$, such that the Eu sublattice turns out to be primitive instead of being body-centered in EuFe$_2$As$_2$. The FeAs layers, featured by asymmetric As coordinations, are hole doped due to charge homogenization. Our combined measurements of electrical transport, magnetization and heat capacity unambiguously and consistently indicate bulk superconductivity at 36.5 K in the FeAs layers and ferroma…
We report the realization of superconductivity by 5d element Ir doping in LaFeAsO, a prototype parent compound of high-temperature iron based superconductors. X-ray diffraction patterns indicate that the material has formed the ZrCuSiAs-type structure with a space group P4/nmm. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants demonstrated that the Fe ions were successfully replaced by the Ir. Both electrical resistance and magnetization measurements show superconductivity up to 11 K in LaFe1-xIrxAsO. The superconducting transitions at different magnetic fields were also measured yielding a sl…
Here we report pressure effect on superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of ReFeAsO0.85 (Re= Sm and Nd) system without fluorine doping. In-situ measurements under high pressure showed that Tc of the two compounds decrease monotonously over the pressure range investigated. The pressure coefficients dTc/dP in SmFeAsO0.85 and Nd FeAsO0.85 were different, revealing the important influence of the deformation in layers on Tc. Theoretical calculations suggested that the electron density of states decrease with increasing pressure, following the same trend of experimental data.
We report a high-pressure single crystal study of the topological superconductor Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Resistivity measurements under pressure show superconductivity is depressed smoothly. At the same time the metallic behavior is gradually lost. The upper critical field data $B_{c2}(T)$ under pressure collapse onto a universal curve. The absence of Pauli limiting and the comparison of $B_{c2}(T)$ to a polar state function point to spin-triplet superconductivity, but an anisotropic spin-singlet state cannot be discarded completely.
We study the phase transition of a star-shaped superconductor, which covers smoothly the range from zero to two dimensions with respect to the superconducting coherence length. Detailed measurements and numerical calculations show that the nucleation of superconductivity in this device is very inhomogeneous, resulting in rich structure in the superconducting transition as a function of temperature and magnetic field. The superconducting order parameter is strongly enhanced and mostly robust in regions close to multiple boundaries.
A systematic study of irreversible magnetization was performed in bulk Niobium after different surface treatments. Starting with smooth surfaces and abrading them, a strong increase of the critical current is observed up an apparent limiting value. An impressive change of the critical current is also observed in the surface superconductivity (SSC) state, reaching values of the same order of magnitude as in the mixed state. We explain also the observation of strong SSC for magnetic field perpendicular to larges facets in terms of nucleation of SC along bumps of a corrugated surface.
The interplay between different ordered phases, such as superconducting, charge or spin ordered phases, is of central interest in condensed matter physics. The very recent discovery of superconductivity with a remarkable T$_c$= 26 K in Fe-based oxypnictide La(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs is a surprise to the scientific community\cite{Kamihara08}. The pure LaOFeAs itself is not superconducting but shows an anomaly near 150 K in both resistivity and dc magnetic susceptibility. Here we provide combined experimental and theoretical evidences showing that the anomaly is caused by the spin-density-wave (SDW)…
High resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) was used to study the temperature dependence of the oxygen deficient NdFeAsO$_{0.85}$ superconducting compound. By employing a dense temperature sampling we have managed to reveal unnoticed structural modifications that start around $\sim$180K, and disappear at the transition temperature. The data show minor changes of the structural characteristics in the Nd-O charge reservoir layer while in the superconducting Fe-As layer the FeAs$_{4}$ tetrahedron shows gradual modifications below $\sim$180K, which suddenly disappear at T$_{\rm c}…
We use thermodynamic and neutron scattering measurements to study the effect of oxygen annealing on the superconductivity and magnetism in Pr$_{0.88}$LaCe$_{0.12}$CuO$_{4-δ}$. Although the transition temperature $T_c$ measured by susceptibility and superconducting coherence length increase smoothly with gradual oxygen removal from the annealing process, bulk superconductivity, marked by a specific heat anomaly at $T_c$ and the presence of a neutron magnetic resonance, only appears abruptly when $T_c$ is close to the largest value. These results suggest that the effect of oxygen annealing must …
The recent reports on high-temperature superconductivity above 190 K in hydrogen sulfide at 200 GPa pressure, exceeding all previously discovered superconductors, has greatly invigorated the interest in dense hydrogen-rich solids. In this paper, we investigate a possible way to optimize the critical temperature in these compounds using first-principles linear-response calculations. We construct hypothetical alchemical atoms to smoothly interpolate between elements of the chalcogen group and study their bonding and superconducting properties. Our results show that the already remarkable critica…
Study of superconductivity in layered iron-based materials was initiated in 2006 by Hosono's group, and boosted in 2008 by the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of 26 K in LaFeAsO1-xFx. Since then, enormous researches have been done on the materials, with Tc reaching as high as 55 K. Here, we review briefly experimental and theoretical results on atomic and electronic structures and magnetic and superconducting properties of FeAs-based superconductors and related compounds. We seek for clues for unconventional superconductivity in the materials.
