We report superconductivity in polycrystalline samples of the 1038-type compounds (Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$)$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) up to T$_c$ = 35 K with RE = Y, La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Lu. The critical temperatures are independent of the trivalent rare earth element used, yielding an universal T$_c$($x$) phase diagram for electron doping in all these systems. The absence of superconductivity in Eu$^{2+}$ doped samples, as well as the close resemblance of (Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$)$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) to the 1048 compound substantiate that the electron doping scenario in the RE-1038 and 1048 phases is completely analogous to other iron-based superconductors with simpler crystal structures.
Here we report a new class of superconductors prepared by high pressure synthesis in the quaternary family ReFeAsO1-delta (Re = Sm, Nd, Pr, Ce, La) without fluorine doping. The onset superconducting critical temperature (Tc) in these compounds increases with the reduction of Re atom size, and the highest Tc obtained so far is 55 K in SmFeAsO1-delta. For the NdFeAsO1-delta system with different oxygen concentration a dome-shaped phase diagram was found.
Superconducting properties of Co-co-doped (Ca,RE)FeAs2 ((Ca,RE)112: RE = La, Pr) were investigated. Co-co-doping increased Tc of (Ca,Pr)112 while Mn-co-doping suppressed superconductivity of (Ca,RE)112. Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 showed large diamagnetic screening and sharper superconducting transition than Co-free (Ca,La)112. Tczero observed in resistivity measurements increased from 14 K to 30 K by Co-co-doping, while Tconset was not increased. The critical current density (Jc) of Co-co-doped (Ca,La)112 were approximately 2.1 x 104 Acm-2 and 3.2 x 103 Acm-2 at 2 K and 25 K, respectively, near ze…
The effects of simultaneous Sb doping on the superconductivity of 112-type Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) were studied through measurements of the magnetization and electrical resistivity. In Sb-free materials, the superconducting transition temperature Tc of the La-doped sample was 35 K, while those of the Pr- and Nd-doped samples were ~10 K; no superconductivity was observed in the Ce-doped sample. Sb doping increased the Tc of all RE-doped samples: Tc increased to 47, 43, 43, and 43 K for RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd, respectively. We also found that the enhanced superconductivity resul…
We have successfully synthesized the fluoride-arsenide compounds Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF (RE=Nd, Pr; x=0, 0.6). The x-ray powder diffraction confirmed that the main phases of our samples are Ca$_{1-x}$RE$_x$FeAsF with the ZrCuSiAs structure. By measuring resistivity, superconductivity was observed at 57.4 K in Nd-doped and 52.8 K in Pr-doped samples with x=0.6. Bulk superconductivity was also proved by the DC magnetization measurements in both samples. Hall effect measurements revealed hole-like charge carriers in the parent compound CaFeAsF with a clear resistivity anomaly below 118 K, while th…
Hole-doping of NdFeAsO via partial replacement of Nd3+ by Sr2+ is a successful route to obtain superconducting phases (Tc = 13.5 K for a Sr2+ content of 20%); however, the structural and electronic response with doping is different from and non-symmetric to that in the electron-doped side of the phase diagram.
The effect of electron doping by trivalent charge state rare-earth ion (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) substitutions on the superconductivity in BaFe2As2 was examined using epitaxial films. Each of the RE substitutions suppressed the resistivity anomaly associated with the magnetic/structural phase transitions, leading to the resistivity drops and superconductivity transitions. Bulk superconductivity was observed at the maximum onset critical temperature (Tconset) of 22.4 K for La-doping and 13.4 K for Ce-doping, while only broad resistivity drops were observed at 6.2 K for Pr-doping and 5.8 K for N…
The recently discovered FeAs-based superconductors are a new, promising set of materials for both technological as well as basic research. They offer transition temperatures as high as 55 K as well as essentially isotropic and extremely large upper, superconducting critical fields in excess of 40 T at 20 K. In addition they may well provide insight into exotic superconductivity that extends beyond just FeAs-based superconductivity, perhaps even shedding light on the still perplexing CuO-based high-Tc materials. Whereas superconductivity can be induced in the RFeAsO (R = rare earth) and AEFe2As…
The mechanism of superconductivity in pnictides is discussed through direct doping in superconducting FeAs and also in charge reservoir REO layers. The un-doped SmFeAsO is charge neutral SDW (Spin Density Wave) compound with magnetic ordering below 150 K. The Superconducting FeAs layers are doped with Co and Ni at Fe site, whereas REO layers are doped with F at O site. The electron doping in SmFeAsO through Co results in superconductivity with transition temperature (Tc) maximum up to 15 K, whereas F doping results in Tc upto 47 K in SmFeAsO. All these REFe/Co/NiAsO/F compounds are iso-structu…
In this paper we report the synthesis of iron-based superconductors CaFe2-xRhxAs2 using one-step solid state reaction method, which crystallizes in the ThCr2Si2-type structure with a space group I4/mmm. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants demonstrates that the Fe ions are successfully replaced by the Rh. By increasing the doping content of Rh, the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition in the parent compound is suppressed and superconductivity emerges. The maximum superconducting transition temperature is found at 18.5 K with the doping level of x = 0.15. The temperature dependence o…
In this paper we report the superconductivity above 40 K in the electron doping single crystal Ca1-xRexFe2As2 (Re = La, Ce, Pr). The x-ray diffraction patterns indicate high crystalline quality and c-axis orientation. the resistivity anomaly in the parent compound CaFe2As2 is completely suppressed by partial replacement of Ca by rare earth and a superconducting transition reaches as high as 43 K, which is higher than the value in electron doping FeAs-122 compounds by substituting Fe ions with transition metal, even surpasses the highest values observed in hole doping systems with a transition …
The 3D phase diagram of iron pnictides where the critical temperature depends on charge density and microstrain in the active FeAs layers is proposed. The iron pnictides superconductors are shown to be a practical realization of a heterostructure at the atomic limit made of a superlattice of FeAs layers intercalated by spacer layers. We have focussed our interest on the A 1-x BxFe2As2 (122) families and we show that FeAs layers have a tensile microstrain due to the misfit strain between the active layers and the spacers. We have identified the critical range of doping and microstrain where the…
The electronic structure of the intercalated iron-based superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O (Tc - 21.5 K) has been investigated by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and combined local density approximation and dynamical mean field theory calculations. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by both the Fe 3d and Ti 3d orbitals, indicating that the spacing layers separating different FeAs layers are also metallic. By counting the enclosed volumes of the Fermi surface sheets, we observe a large self-doping effect, i.e. 0.25 electrons per unit cell are transferred from the…
Using state-of-the-art first-principles calculations we have elucidated the complex magnetic and structural dependence of LaOFeAs upon doping. Our key findings are that (i) doping results in an orthorhombic ground state and (ii) there is a commensurate to incommensurate transition in the magnetic structure between $x=0.025$ and $x=0.04$. Our calculations further imply that in this system magnetic order persists up to the onset of superconductivity at the critical doping of $x=0.05$. Finally, our investigations of the undoped parent compound reveal an unusually pronounced dependence of the magn…
We investigated the temperature dependence of the density-of-states in the iron-based superconductor SmO_1-xF_xFeAs (x=0, 0.12, 0.15, 0.2) with high resolution angle-integrated photoemission spectroscopy. The density-of-states suppression is observed with decreasing temperature in all samples, revealing two characteristic energy scales (10meV and 80meV). However, no obvious doping dependence is observed. We argue that the 10meV suppression is due to an anomalously doping-independent normal state pseudogap, which becomes the superconducting gap once in the superconducting state; and alert the p…
In order to examine to what extent the rigid-band-like electron doping scenario is applicable to the transition metal-substituted Fe-based superconductors, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy studies of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (Ni-122) and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ (Cu-122), and compared the results with Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (Co-122). We find that Ni 3$\it{d}$-derived features are formed below the Fe 3$\it{d}$ band and that Cu 3$\it{d}$-derived ones further below it. The electron and hole Fermi surface (FS) volumes are found to increase and dec…
Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies were performed for the Sb-doped 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 with the superconducting transition temperature Tc of 47 K. Doped Sb preferably substituted not for As(1) in the FeAs layers but for As(2) in the layers of As zigzag chains. Structural reasons for Tc enhancement by Sb doping were discussed.
We have developed a real space spin-parallel theory of superconductivity based on the minimum principle in energy. This theory has successfully provided coherent explanations to a number of complicated problems in conventional and non-conventional superconductors. In this paper, we report the study the optimal doping problem in the new oxypnictide high-temperature superconductors using aforementioned theory. In FeAs family, it is shown that there are three optimum (or quasi-optimum) doped phases at doping levels x1=1/3, 1/6 and 1/8, where the vortex lattice forms square or triangular stable co…
We investigate the magnetic phase diagram of the newly discovered iron-based high temperature oxypnictide superconductors of the type RO$_{1-x}$F$_x $FeAs, with rare earths R=La, Sm, Nd, Pr and Ce by means of {\it ab initio} SGGA and SGGA+U density functional computations. We find undoped LaOFeAs to be a Mott insulator when incorporating electronic correlations via SGGA+U for any physically relevant value of $U$. The doped compounds are according to SGGA conductors with a transition from an antiferromagnetic to a non-magnetic state at a hole doping of concentration $x_c$=0.075 for R=Nd, Pr and…
Iron-arsenide superconductor Na$_{1-δ}$FeAs is highly reactive with the environment. Due to the high mobility of Na ions, this reaction affects the entire bulk of the crystals and leads an to effective stoichiometry change. Here we use this effect to study the doping evolution of normal and superconducting properties of \emph{the same} single crystals. Controlled reaction with air increases the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, from the initial value of 12 K to 27 K as probed by transport and magnetic measurements. Similar effects are observed in samples reacted with Apiezon N-gre…
We successfully synthesized La- and Sm-doped phenanthrene powder samples and discovered superconductivity at $T_{\rm c}$ around 6 K in them. The $T_{\rm c}$s are 6.1 K for LaPhenanthrene and 6.0 K for SmPhenanthrene, which are enhanced by about 1 K and 0.5 K compared to those in $A_3$Phenanthrene ($A$=K and Rb) and in $Ae_{1.5}$Phenanthrene ($Ae$ = Sr and Ba) superconductors respectively. The superconductive shielding fractions for LaPhenanthrene and SmPhenanthrene are 46.1%$ and 49.8$%$ at 2 K, respectively. The little effect of the doping of the magnetic ion Sm$^{3+}$ on $T_c$ and the positi…
The effects of pressure on antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting phase transitions of 112-type Ca$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$FeAs$_{2}$ were studied, and the in-plane electrical resistivity $ρ_{ab}$ was measured with an indenter-type pressure cell. The AFM phase transition temperatures of $T_{\rm N}$ = 47, 63, and 63 K at ambient pressure for $x$ = 0.18, 0.21, and 0.26 was suppressed by applying pressure $P$, with superconductivity emerging at critical pressures of $P_{\rm c}$ $\simeq$ 0, 1.5, and 3.4 GPa, respectively. Correspondingly, the slope of $T_{\rm N}$ against $P$ decreased as $dT_{\rm N}/P…
Using state-of-the-art first-principles calculations we study the magnetic behaviour of CeOFeAs. We find the Ce layer moments oriented perpendicular to those of the Fe layers. An analysis of incommensurate magnetic structures reveals that the Ce-Ce magnetic coupling is rather weak with, however, a strong Fe-Ce coupling. Comparison of the origin of the tetragonal to orthorhombic structural distortion in CeOFeAs and LaOFeAs show marked differences; in CeOFeAs the distortion is stabilized by a lowering of spectral weight at the Fermi level, while in LaOFeAs by a reduction in magnetic frustration.…
We report experimental results of ^{75}As and ^{139}La nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in the iron-based layered La(O_{1-x}F_{x})FeAs (x= 0.0, 0.04 and 0.11) system. In the undoped LaOFeAs, 1/T_1 of ^{139}La exhibits a distinct peak at T_N ~ 142 K below which the spectra become broadened due to the internal magnetic field attributed to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. In the 4% F-doped sample, 1/T_1T exhibits a Curie-Weiss temperature dependence down to 30 K, suggesting the development of AFM spin fluctuations with decreasing temperature. In the 11% F-doped sample, in contrast, pseudogap …
The recently discovered high-temperature superconductivity in doped quaternary iron oxypnictides correlates experimentally with a magnetic instability. We have used first-principles calculations to determine a magnetic phase diagram of ReO$_{1-δ}$FeAs (Re=La--Dy) as a function of the doping $δ$, of the FeAs in-plane lattice constant $a$, and of the distance between the Fe and As planes, that is qualitatively consistent with recent experimental findings on the doping, internal (chemical) and external pressure dependence. The existence of a tricritical point (TCP) in the phase diagram suggests n…
Using the numerical unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, we study the ground state of a two-orbital model describing newly discovered FeAs-based superconductors. We observe the competition of a $(0, π)$ mode spin-density wave and the superconductivity as the doping concentration changes. There might be a small region in the electron-doping side where the magnetism and superconductivity coexist. The superconducting pairing is found to be spin singlet, orbital even, and mixed s$_{xy}$ + d$_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ wave (even parity).
We report the successful substitution of cobalt, nickel, and copper for iron in the 1038 phase parent compound Ca$_{10}$(FeAs)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$) yielding Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), and Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), respectively. Superconductivity is induced in Co and Ni doped compounds reaching critical temperatures up to 15 K, similar to known Pt substituted Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt$_3$As$_8$), whereas no superconductivity was detected in Ca$_{10}$(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$As)$_{10}$(Pt…
Here we report the synthesis and basic characterization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO (x=0.10, 0.15). The parent compound SmFeAsO itself is not superconducting but shows an antiferromagnetic order near 150 K, which must be suppressed by doping before superconductivity emerges. With Co-doping in the FeAs planes, antiferromagnetic order is destroyed and superconductivity occurs at 15 K. Similar to LaFe1-xCoxAsO, the SmFe1-xCoxAsO system appears to tolerate considerable disorder in the FeAs planes. This result is important, which indicates difference between cuprare superconductors and the iron-based arsenide…
We report a systematic and ab-initio electronic structure calculation of Ca0.75 M0.25 Fe2 As2 with M = Ca, Sr, Eu, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Na, K, Rb. The recently reported experimentally observed structural trends in rare earths-doped CaFe2 As2 compounds are successfully predicted and a complete theoretical description of the pressure induced orthorhombic to collapsed tetragonal transition is given. We demonstrate that the transition pressure is reduced by electron doping and rises linearly with the ionic size of the dopants. We discuss the implications of our description for the realization o…
Studies of the doping process can provide a better understanding of the superconducting mechanisms in cuprous oxide materials. In this work, we studied the doping effects on the crystal structure, electric, morphologic and magnetic properties of the BSCCO system with the nominal composition $Bi_{1.6}Pb_{0.4}Sr_{(2-x)}RE_xCa_2Cu_3O_{(10-δ)}$. Here, the rare earth element (RE) was replaced by La in the sites of Sr. The x was ranged from 0.0 to 2.0, in steps of 0.5. The samples were prepared based on Pechini's method. The resulting powder was pressed at room temperature and the pellets were submi…
Raman spectra have been measured on iron-based quaternary CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs and LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs with varying fluorine doping at room temperatures. A group analysis has been made to clarify the optical modes. Based on the first principle calculations, the observed phonon modes can be assigned accordingly. In LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs, the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes related to the vibrations of La, are suppressed with increasing F doping. However F doping only has a small effect on the E$_g$ and A$_{1g}$ modes of Fe and As. The Raman modes of La and As are absent in rare-earth substituted CeO$_…
Electron doping of a 122-type iron pnictide BaFe2As2 by substituting the Ba site with an aliovalent ion (indirect doping), which had been unsuccessful by conventional solid-state synthesis methods, was achieved by a non-equilibrium film growth process. The substitution with La was substantiated by a systematic shrinkage of the c-axis lattice parameter due to the smaller ionic radius of La3+ than that of Ba2+. A negative Hall coefficient indicated that the majority carriers were electrons, as is consistent with this aliovalent ion doping. The La substitution suppressed an antiferromagnetic tran…
We have investigated the fluorine-doping dependence of lattice constants, transports and specific heat for polycrystalline LaFePO1-xFx. F doping slightly and monotonically decreases the in-plane lattice parameter. In the normal state, electrical resistivity at low temperature is proportional to the square of temperature and the electronic specific heat coefficient has large value, indicating the existence of moderate electron-electron correlation in this system. Hall coefficient has large magnitude, and shows large temperature dependence, indicating the low carrier density and multiple carrier…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of crystal field transitions in PrFeAsO, PrFeAsO0.87F0.13, and NdFeAsO0.85F0.15. Doping with fluorine produces additional crystal field excitations, providing evidence that there are two distinct charge environments around the rare earth ions, with probabilities that are consistent with a random distribution of dopants on the oxygen sites. The 4f electrons of the Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions have non-magnetic and magnetic ground states, respectively, indicating that the enhancement of Tc compared to LaFeAsO1-xFx is not due to rare earth magnetism.
The recently discovered compounds Ca10(Fe1-xPtxAs)10(Pt3+yAs8) exhibit superconductivity up to 38 K, and contain iron arsenide (FeAs) and platinum arsenide (Pt3+yAs8) layers separated by layers of Ca atoms. We show that high Tc's above 15 K only emerge if the iron-arsenide layers are at most free of platinum-substitution (x \rightarrow 0) in contrast to recent reports. In fact Pt-substitution is detrimental to higher Tc, which increases up to 38 K only by charge doping of pure FeAs layers. We point out, that two different negatively charged layers [(FeAs)10]n- and (Pt3+yAs8)m- compete for the …
We have studied EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ by the measurements of x-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, thermopower, magnetic susceptibility, magnetoresistance and specific heat. Partial substitution of As with P results in the shrinkage of lattice, which generates chemical pressure to the system. It is found that EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_{2}$ undergoes a superconducting transition at 26 K, followed by ferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{2+}$ moments at 20 K. This finding is the first observation of superconductivity stabilized by internal chemical pressure, and supplies a r…
We propose a generalized model of electronic structure modification in HTSC cuprates and ferropnictides under doping. In this model the role of doping consists in only a local change in the electronic structures of the parent phases of cuprates and ferropnictides due to the formation of trion complexes comprising a doped carrier localized in unit cell and charge transfer (CT) excitons around it. These CT excitons emerge in CuO4 or AsFe4 plaquettes in the CuO2 or FeAs basal planes (CT plaquettes) under the influence of doped carrier, restricting its itinerancy. As the dopant concentration is in…
Materials with exceptional magnetism and superconductivity usually conceive emergent physical phenomena. Here, we investigate the physical properties of the (Eu,La)FeAs2 system with double magnetic sublattices. The parent EuFeAs2 shows anisotropy-associated magnetic behaviors, such as Eu-related moment canting and exchange bias. Through La doping, the magnetic anisotropy is enhanced with ferromagnetism of Eu2+ realized in the overdoped region, and a special exchange bias of the superposed ferromagnetic/superconducting loop revealed in Eu0.8La0.2FeAs2. Meanwhile, the Fe-related antiferromagneti…
Fluoride-doped iron-based oxypnictides containing rare-earth gadolinium (GdFeAsO0.8F0.2) and co-doping with yttrium (Gd0.8Y0.2FeAsO0.8F0.2) have been prepared via conventional solid state reaction at ambient pressure. The non-yttrium substituted oxypnictide show superconducting transition as high as 43.9 K from temperature dependent resistance measurements with the Meissner effect observed at a lower temperature of 40.8 K from temperature dependent magnetization measurements. By replacing a small amount of gadolinium with yttrium Tc was observed to be lowered by 10 K which might be caused by a…
Metal-intercalated iron selenides are a class of superconductors that have received much attention but are less understood in comparison with their FeAs-based counterparts. Here, the controversial issues such as Fe vacancy, the real phase responsible for superconductivity, and lattice stability have been addressed based on first-principles calculations. New insights into the distinct features in terms of carrier doping have been revealed.
We examined doping effect of 3d transition metal elements (TM: Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) at the Fe site of a quaternary fluoroarsenide CaFeAsF, an analogue of 1111-type parent compound LaFeAsO. The anomaly at ~120 K observed in resistivity (rho) vs. temperature (T) plot for the parent compound is suppressed by the doping of each TM element. Furthermore, Co- and Ni-doping (CaFe1-xTMxAsF, TM = Co, Ni) induces superconductivity with a transition temperature maximized at the nominal x = 0.10 for Co (22 K) and at x = 0.05 for Ni (12 K). These optimal doping levels may be understood by considering tha…
The effects of isovalent doping on the superconducting transition temperature Tc in novel 112-type iron arsenide Ca1-xLaxFeAs2 were studied by conducting measurements of electrical resistivity rho and magnetization M. P or Sb doping strongly enhances Tc: P-doped Ca0.84La0.16FeAs2 and Sb-doped Ca0.85La0.15FeAs2 exhibited Tc of 41 and 43 K, respectively, while Ca0.85La0.15FeAs2 without P/Sb exhibited Tc = 35 K. These observations will give a hint for further enhancing Tc of rare-earth doped Ca-Fe-As systems.
By using solid state reaction method we have fabricated the hole doped $La_{1-x}Sr_xFeAsO$ superconductors with Sr content up to 0.13. It is found that the sharp anomaly at about 150 K and the low temperature upturn of resistivity are suppressed by doping holes into the parent phase. Interestingly both the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ and the lattice constants (a-axis and c-axis) increase monotonously with hole concentration, in sharp contrast with the electron doped side where the $T_c$ increases with a continuing shrinkage of the lattice constants either by dope more fluorine…
Utilizing the high stability of calcium and rare earth hydrides, CaFeAsF1-xHx (x = 0.0-1.0) and SmFeAsO1-xHx (x = 0.0-0.47) have been first synthesized using high pressure to form hydrogen-substituted 1111 type iron-arsenide superconductors. Neutron diffraction and density functional calculations have demonstrated that the hydrogens are incorporated as H- ions occupying F- sites in the blocking layer of CaFeAsF. The resulting CaFeAsF1-xHx is non-superconducting, whereas SmFeAsO1-xHx is a superconductor, with an optimal Tc = 55 K at x 0.2. It was found that up to 40% of the O2- ions can be repl…
The experimental realization of high-temperature superconductivity in compressed hydrides H$_3$S and LaH$_{10}$ at high pressures over 150 GPa has aroused great interest in reducing the stabilization pressure of superconducting hydrides. For cerium hydride CeH$_9$ recently synthesized at 80$-$100 GPa, our first-principles calculations reveal that the strongly hybridized electronic states of Ce 4$f$ and H 1$s$ orbitals produce the topologically nontrivial Dirac nodal lines around the Fermi energy $E_F$, which are protected by crystalline symmetries. By hole doping, $E_F$ shifts down toward the …
The recently discovered quaternary arsenide oxide superconductor La[O1-xFx]FeAs with the superconducting critical transition temperature (Tc) of 26 K [1], has been quickly expanded to another high-Tc superconducting system beyond copper oxides by the replacement of La with other rare earth elements, such as Sm, Ce, and Pr etc. [2-4], and the Pr[O1-xFx]FeAs has become to be the first non-cuprate superconductor that holding a Tc above 50 K. All these arsenide (including phosphide) superconductors formed in a same tetragonal layered structure with the space group P4/nmm which has an alternant sta…
We report an 75As-NMR study on iron (Fe)-based superconductors with thick perovskitetype blocking layers Sr4(Mg0.5-xTi0.5+x)2O6Fe2As2 with x=0 and 0.2. We have found that antiferromagnetic (AFM) order takes place when x=0, and superconductivity (SC) emerges below Tc=36 K when x=0.2. These results reveal that the Fe-pnictides with thick perovskitetype blocks also undergo an evolution from the AFM order to the SC by doping electron carriers into FeAs planes through the chemical substitution of Ti+4 ions for Mg+2 ions, analogous to the F-substitution in LaFeAsO compound. The reason why the Tc=36 …
In rare-earth doped single crystalline CaFe2As2, the mysterious small volume fraction which superconducts up to 49 K, much higher than the bulk Tc ~ 30s K, has prompted a long search for a hidden variable that could enhance the Tc by more than 30% in iron-based superconductors of the same structure. Here we report a chemical, structural, and magnetic study of CaFe2As2 systematically doped with La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. Coincident with the high Tc phase, we find extreme magnetic anisotropy, accompanied by an unexpected doping-independent Tc and equally unexpected superparamagnetic clusters associated…
Polycrystalline Sr1-xNdxFeAsF samples were prepared at various Nd-doping levels using both a stoichiometric mixture of the starting materials and in slight excess amounts of FeAs. Susceptibility and resistivity of the samples were studied down to 4 K revealing a probable coexistence of superconductivity and a magnetic ordering. Temperature dependence of resistivity for all the Nd-doped samples shows the presence of a transition below 15 K most likely originating from the magnetic ordering of Nd moments, while the spin-density-wave anomaly at 175 K survives up to 0.35 Nd-doping. Superconductivi…
We report measurements of the phonon density-of-states in iron oxypnictide superconductors by inelastic x-ray scattering. A good agreement with ab-initio calculations that do not take into account strong electronic correlations is found, and an unpredicted softening of phonon branches under F doping of these compounds is observed. Raman scattering experiments lead us to conclude that this softening is not related to zone center phonons, and consequently imply an important softening of the relevant phonon branches at finite momentum transfer Q.
Raman spectra of polycrystalline NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.0, 0.1, 0.2) compound have been systematically investigated as functions of temperature and fluorine concentration. Scanning electron microscopic and Raman microscopic characterization demonstrates that the polycrystalline samples mainly contain two phases, i.e. superconductor NdFeAsO1-xFx compound and a MnP-type FeAs phase, with dissimilar characteristic Raman bands. It was found that fluorine doping leads to structure disorder in the insulator Nd-O layers and high temperature coefficient of Fe-As vibrational mode.
La-substituted CaFeAsH,(Ca1-xLax)FeAsH, were synthesized by the solid state reaction at 1173 K under high pressure of 2.5 GPa. The r-T anomaly corresponding to tetragonal to orthorhombic structural transition was suppressed by La-substitution and then the superconductivity was observed at an electron doping content of Ne > 0.05. The maximum onset Tc of 47.4 K was reached for Ne = 0.18, which is significant increase compared to 23 K achieved by direct electron doping to the FeAs-layer via Co-substitution to the Fe-site. This value of Tc value fits well to the phenomenological relation between T…
We synthesized a series of K0.8Fe2-xCoxSe2 samples with nominal compositions 0\leq x\leq 0.035 and investigated their physical properties. The results show that the superconductivity in K0.8Fe2-xCoxSe2 is quenched down to 5 K by 0.5 at. % Co doping, the fastest quenching rate ever-reported. The role played here by Co is in contrast with the one in FeAs based superconductors where Co usually induces superconductivity from parent compounds. Such a rapid quenching favors a localized 3d model against the itinerant one for iron pnictide superconductors.
The fluorine-doped rare-earth iron oxyarsenides, REFeAsO1-xFx (RE =rare earth) have recently emerged as a new family of high-temperature superconductors with transition temperatures (Tc) as high as 55 K (refs 1-4). Early work has provided compelling evidence that the undoped parent materials exhibit spin-density-wave (SDW) antiferromagnetic order and undergo a structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal symmetry upon cooling.5 Both the magnetic and structural instabilities are suppressed upon doping with fluoride ions before the appearance of superconductivity.6,7 Here …
In iron pnictides, high temperature superconductivity emerges after suppressing antiferromagnetism by doping. Here we show that antiferromagnetism in Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeAs$_2$ is robust against and even enhanced by doping. Using $^{75}$As-nuclear magnetic resonance and nuclear quadrupole resonance techniques, we find that an antiferromagnetic order occurs below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}$ = 62 K at a high doping concentration ($x$ = 0.15) where superconductivity sets in at the transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ = 35 K. Unexpectedly, $T_{\rm N}$ is enhanced with increasing doping, rising up…
Superconductivity frequently appears by doping compounds that show a collective phase transition. So far, however, this has not been observed in topological materials. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity induced by Ga doping in orthorhombic Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$, which undergoes a second-order metal-insulator-like transition at $\sim$58 K and is predicted to have a nontrivial band topology. It is found that the substitution of Ga for Ge leads to hole doping in Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7-x}$Ga$_{x}$. As a consequence, the phase transition is gradually suppressed and disappears above $x$ = 0.2. At …
By using solid state reaction method, we have synthesized the Pd-doped superconductor SrFe2-xPdxAs2. The systematic evolution of the lattice constants indicated that the Fe ions were successfully replaced by the Pd. By increasing the doping content of Pd, the antiferromagnetic state of the parent phase is suppressed and superconductivity is induced at a doping level of about x=0.05. Superconductivity with a maximum transition temperature Tc of about 8.7 K was achieved at the doping level of x = 0.15. The general phase diagram of Tc versus x was obtained and found to be similar to the case of N…
The specific heat $C(T)$ of new iron-based high-$T_c$ superconductor SmO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs ($0 \leq x \leq 0.2$) was systematically studied. For undoped $x$ = 0 sample, a specific heat jump was observed at 130 K. This is attributed to the structural or spin-density-wave (SDW) transition, which also manifests on resistivity as a rapid drop. However, this jump disappears with slight F doping in $x$ = 0.05 sample, although the resistivity drop still exists. The specific heat $C/T$ shows clear anomaly near $T_c$ for $x$ = 0.15 and 0.20 superconducting samples. Such anomaly has been absent in LaO$_{…
Low-temperature specific heat (SH) and resistivity were measured on Ba(Fe_{1-x}Co_x)_2As_2 single crystals in wide doping region. A sizeable residual specific heat coefficient γ_0 was observed in the low temperature limit of all samples. The specific heat jump near T_c, i.e. ΔC/T|_{T_c} and the upper critical field H_{c2}^c (H||c) were also determined. It is found that -γ_0, ΔC/T|_{T_c}, \sqrt{H_{c2}^c} and T_c all shared a similar evolution with doping. All these can be well understood within the model of S$^\pm$ pairing symmetry when accounting the Co-dopants as unitary scattering centers in…
We demonstrate that Mn-doping in the layered sulfides Bi_4O_4S_3 leads to stable Bi_4-x Mn_x O_4 S_3 compounds that exhibit both long-range ferromagnetism and enhanced superconductivity for 0.075 < = x < = 0.15, with a possible record superconducting transition temperature (T_c) = 15 K among all BiS_2-based superconductors. We conjecture that the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism may be attributed to Mn-doping in the spacer Bi2O2 layers away from the superconducting BiS_2 layers, whereas the enhancement of T_c may be due to excess electron transfer to BiS_2 from the Mn4+/Mn3+…
