Recent experiments in underdoped hole-doped cuprates have shown the presence of two energy scales in the Raman spectrum in the superconducting state. This feature has a natural explanation in some models in which pseudogap and superconductivity compete. In electron-doped cuprates antiferromagnetic correlations are believed to survive in the superconducting state, and to produce a pseudogap above the critical temperature. Contrary to hole-doped systems, in electron-doped compounds only one energy scale appear since the pair breaking Raman intensity peaks in both B$_{1g}$ (antinodal) and B$_{2g}$ (nodal) channels at a frequency of a few meV, typical of the superconducting order parameter. In this paper we analyze the different effect in the Raman spectrum of the competition between pseudogap and superconductivity in electron and hole-doped cuprates. The difference in energy scales in both systems is explained in terms of the different truncation of the Fermi surface induced by the pseudogap. For electron-doped cuprates we also analyze the spectrum with antiferromagnetism and a non-monotonic superconducting order parameter.
We calculate the optical and Raman response within a phenomenological model of fermion quasiparticles coupled to nearly critical collective modes. We find that, whereas critical scaling properties might be masked in optical spectra due to charge conservation, distinct critical signatures of charge and spin fluctuations can be detected in Raman spectra exploiting specific symmetry properties. We compare our results with recent experiments on the cuprates.
We calculate the Raman response contribution due to collective modes, finding a strong dependence on the photon polarizations and on the characteristic wavevectors of the modes. We compare our results with recent Raman spectroscopy experiments in underdoped cuprates, $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ and $(Y_{1.97}Ca_{0.3})Ba_2CuO_{6.05}$, where anomalous low-energy peaks are observed, which soften upon lowering the temperature. We show that the specific dependence on doping and on photon polarizations of these peaks is only compatible with charge collective excitations at finite wavelength.
Calculations are presented for electronic Raman scattering and infrared conductivity in a $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ superconductor including the effects of elastic scattering via anisotropic impurities and inelastic spin-fluctuation scattering. A consistent description of experiments on optimally doped Bi-2212 is made possible by considering the effects of correlations on both inelastic and elastic scattering.
We show that the asymmetric tunneling spectrum observed in the cuprate superconductors stems from the existence of a competing order. The competition between the competing order and superconductivity can create a charge depletion region near the surface. The asymmetric response of the depletion region as the function of the external voltage causes the asymmetric tunneling spectrum. The effect is very general in a system which is near the phase boundary of two competing states favoring different carrier densities. The asymmetry which has recently been observed in the point-contact spectroscopy …
We discuss how Raman spectra are affected by nearly-critical spin and charge collective modes, which are coupled to charge carriers near a stripe quantum critical point. We show that specific fingerprints of nearly-critical collective modes can indeed be observed in Raman spectra and that the selectivity of Raman spectroscopy in momentum space may also be exploited to distinguish the spin and charge contribution. We apply our results to discuss the spectra of high-Tc superconducting cuprates finding that the collective modes should have masses with substantial temperature dependence in agreeme…
New electronic Raman and I.R. spectroscopy results from optimally and overdoped high temperature superconducting (HTSC) cuprate systems are interpreted in terms of the negative-U, boson-fermion crossover model. Distinction is made between those features which follow the condensate gap, 2Delta(p), and those that are set by the local-pair binding energy, cursive U(p). The critical role of doping level psubc = 0.185 is highlighted in conjunction with the matter of developing quasiparticle incoherence, making connection here with recent transport and related results. E//c IR results in magnetic fi…
Within the stripe quantum critical point theory for high T_c superconductors, we point out that there is a direct contribution of charge collective fluctuations to the optical absorption and to the Raman spectra. In this latter case, we find that the critical charge collective modes can or can not be excited depending on the direction of their wavevector and on the polarization of the incoming and outgoing photons. This indicates a marked distinction between quasiparticles which are strongly and weakly coupled to critical collective modes and provides a direct confirmation that the order assoc…
The doping and temperature dependence of the electronic Raman response in cuprate superconductors is studied within the framework of the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism for the t-J model. It is shown that the temperature dependent depletion at low-energy shifts is faster in B_{1g} symmetry than in B_{2g} symmetry. In analogy to the domelike shape of the doping dependent superconducting transition temperature, the pair-breaking peak energy in B_{2g} channel increases with increasing doping in the underdoped regime, and reaches a maximum in the optimal doping, then decreases in t…
In the under- to optimal-doping regimes of electron-doped cuprates, it was theoretically suspected that there is a coexistence of superconducting (SC) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) orders. The quasi-particle excitations could be gapped by both orders, and the effective gap is non-monotonic d-wave-like in the momentum space. Alternatively the gap was also speculated as a pure pairing gap. Using an effective microscopic model, we consider the manifestation of the quasi-particle gap in the electronic Raman spectra in a range of doping levels, where the relative strength of the SC and AFM order para…
An unified picture for the Raman response of magnetic excitations in cuprate spin-ladder compounds is obtained by comparing calculated two-triplon Raman line-shapes with those of the prototypical compounds SrCu2O3 (Sr123), Sr14Cu24O41 (Sr14), and La6Ca8Cu24O41 (La6Ca8). The theoretical model for the two-leg ladder contains Heisenberg exchange couplings J_parallel and J_perp plus an additional four-spin interaction J_cyc. Within this model Sr123 and Sr14 can be described by x:=J_parallel/J_perp=1.5, x_cyc:=J_cyc/J_perp=0.2, J_perp^Sr123=1130 cm^-1 and J_perp^Sr14=1080 cm^-1. The couplings found…
We present a minimal model for cuprate superconductors. At the unrestricted mean-field level, the model produces homogeneous superconductivity at large doping, striped superconductivity in the underdoped regime and various antiferromagnetic phases at low doping and for high temperatures. On the underdoped side, the superconductor is intrinsically inhomogeneous and global phase coherence is achieved through Josephson-like coupling of the superconducting stripes. The model is applied to calculate experimentally measurable ARPES spectra.
We investigate the scenario of competing order (CO) induced Fermi arcs and pseudogap in cuprate superconductors. For hole-type cuprates, both phenomena as a function of temperature and doping level can be accounted for if the CO vanishes at $T^{\ast}$ above the superconducting transition $T_c$ and the CO wave-vector Q is parallel to the antinodal direction. In contrast, the absence of these phenomena and the non-monotonic d-wave gap in electron-type cuprates may be attributed to $T^{\ast} < T_c$ and a CO wave-vector Q parallel to the nodal direction.
Angle-dependent studies of the gap function provide evidence for the coexistence of two distinct gaps in hole doped cuprates, where the gap near the nodal direction scales with the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, while that in the antinodal direction scales with the pseudogap temperature. We present model calculations which show that most of the characteristic features observed in the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) as well as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) two-gap studies are consistent with a scenario in which the pseudogap has a non-superconductin…
Preformed pairs above $T_c$ and the two-gap scenarios are two main proposals for describing the low doping pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates. Very recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments have shown features which were interpreted as evidence for preformed pairs. Here it is shown that those results can be explained also in the context of the two-gap scenario if self-energy effects are considered. The discussion is based on the $d$-CDW theory or the flux phase of the $t-J$ model.
We report extensive muon spin rotation measurements on the lightly doped Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O6+y compound, which allows us to disentangle the effect of disorder, controlled by random Ca2+ substitution, from that of mere doping. A 3D phase diagram of lightly doped cuprates is accurately drawn, showing that a thermally activated antiferromagnetic phase competes with superconductivity around a quantum critical point, hidden underneath a frozen insulating magnetic state. Disorder suppresses both competing order parameters and unveils the underlying frozen state. Doping and disorder destroy the activated…
In this paper we examine the effects of electron-hole asymmetry as a consequence of strong correlations on the electronic Raman scattering in the normal state of copper oxide high temperature superconductors. Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the single-band Hubbard model, we construct the electronic Raman response from single particle Green's functions and explore the differences in the spectra for electron and hole doping away from half filling. The theoretical results are compared to new and existing Raman scattering experiments on hole-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ a…

We propose a finite temperature Landau theory that describes competing orders and interlayer tunneling in cuprate superconductors as an important extension to a corresponding theory at zero temperature [Nature {\bf 428}, 53 (2004)], where the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ is defined in three possible ways as a function of the zero temperature order parameter. For given parameters, our theory determines $T_c$ without any ambiguity. In mono- and double-layer systems we discuss the relation between zero temperature order parameter and the associated transition temperature in the pr…
We develop a theory for light-induced superconductivity in underdoped cuprates in which the competing bond-density wave order is suppressed by driving phonons with light. Close to a bond-density wave instability in a system with a small Fermi surface, such as a fractionalized Fermi liquid, we show that the coupling of electrons to phonons is strongly enhanced at the bond-density wave ordering wavevectors, leading to a strong softening of phonons at these wavevectors. For a model of classical phonons with anharmonic couplings, we show that the combination of strong softening and driving can lea…
We report the results of a combined muon spin rotation and neutron scattering study on La2-xSrxCuO4 in the vicinity of the so-called 1/8-anomaly. Application of a magnetic field drives the system towards a magnetically ordered spin-density-wave state, which is fully developed at 1/8 doping. The results are discussed in terms of competition between antiferromagnetic and superconducting order parameters.
We report electronic Raman scattering measurements on Bi$_2$Sr$_2$(Y$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$)Cu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ single crystals at different doping levels. The dependence of the spectra on doping and on incoming photon energy is analyzed for different polarization geometries, in the superconducting and in the normal state. We find the scaling behavior of the superconductivity pair-breaking peak with the carrier concentration to be very different in B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ geometries. Also, we do not find evidence of any significant variation of the lineshape of the spectra in the overdoped region in both sym…
We identify a new kind of elementary excitations, spin-rotons, in the doped Mott insulator. They play a central role in deciding the superconducting transition temperature Tc, resulting in a simple Tc formula,Tc=Eg/6, with Eg as the characteristic energy scale of the spin rotons. We show that the degenerate S=1 and S=0 rotons can be probed by neutron scattering and Raman scattering measurements, respectively, in good agreement with the magnetic resonancelike mode and the Raman A1g mode observed in the high-Tc cuprates.
The superconducting phase of the $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{CuO}_{4+δ}$ (Hg-1201) and $\mathrm{HgBa}_2\mathrm{Ca}_2\mathrm{Cu}_3\mathrm{O}_{8+δ}$ (Hg-1223) cuprates has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy under hydrostatic pressure. Our analysis reveals that the increase of $T_c$ with pressure is slower in Hg-1223 cuprate compared to the Hg-1201 due to a charge carrier concentration imbalance (accentuated by pressure) between the $\mathrm{CuO}_2$ layers of Hg-1223. We find that the energy variation under pressure of the apical oxygen mode from which the charge carriers are transferred to the …
One of the prime manifestations of an anisotropic electronic state in underdoped cuprates is the in-plane resistivity anisotropy $Δρ\equiv(ρ_{a}-ρ_{b})/ρ_{b}$. Here we use a Boltzmann-equation approach to compute the contribution to $Δρ$ arising from scattering by anisotropic charge and spin fluctuations, which have been recently observed experimentally. While the anisotropy in the charge fluctuations is manifested in the correlation length, the anisotropy in the spin fluctuations emerges only in the structure factor. As a result, we find that spin fluctuations favor $Δρ>0$, whereas charge flu…
We develop a formalism to study indirect resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in systems with itinerant electrons, accounting for the attraction between valence electrons and the positively-charged core hole exactly, and apply this formalism to the hole-doped cuprate superconductors. We focus on the relationship between RIXS lineshapes and band structure, including broken symmetries. We show that RIXS is capable of distinguishing between competing order parameters, establishing it as a useful probe of the pseudogap phase.
We study experimentally the Raman response of the undoped high-Tc parent compound $YBa_2Cu_3O_6$, and give a unified theory of the two-magnon Raman peak and optical conductivity based on the Hubbard-Holstein model with electron-phonon coupling (EPC). The Hubbard model without EPC can qualitatively account for the experimentally observed resonance of the Raman response, but only the Hubbard-Holstein model (i) reproduces asymmetry of the Raman spectrum, (ii) validates experimental visibility of the two-magnon peak, and (iii) predicts the correct shape and energy of the lower edge of the charge t…
Electron-phonon coupling (EPC) is one of the most common and fundamental interactions in solids. It not only dominates many basic dynamic processes like resistivity, thermal conductivity etc, but also provides the pairing glue in conventional superconductors. But in high-temperature superconductors (HTSC), it is still controversial whether or not EPC is in favor of paring. Despite the controversies, many experiments have provided clear evidence for EPC in HTSC. In this paper, we briefly review EPC in cuprate and iron-based superconducting systems revealed by Raman scattering. We introduce how …
Raman and ARPES experiments have demonstrated that in superconducting underdoped cuprates nodal and antinodal regions are characterized by two energy scales instead of the one expected in BCS. The nodal scale decreases with underdoping while the antinodal one increases. Contrary to the behavior expected for an increasing energy scale, the antinodal Raman intensity decreases with decreasing doping. Using the Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ) model, we show that these features are a consequence of the non-conventional nature of the superconducting state in which superconductivity and pseudogap correlat…
We demonstrate how first-principles calculations of many competing low-energy states of a correlated material, here a cuprate, can be used to develop a thermodynamic model of Mott and pseudogap transitions in terms of magnetic short-range order. Mott physics is found in this picture to be driven by an unbinding of the antiphase domain walls, while the pseudogap phenomenon represents local moment formation. We provide explanations for nematicity and Fermi arc formation, and find a striking correspondence with many-body perturbation theory predictions.
The electron-doped cuprates were studied by electronic Raman spectroscopy across the entire region of the superconducting (SC) phase diagram. We determined that the magnitude of the SC order parameter varies between 4.6 and 3.5 k_BT_c, consistent with weak coupling BCS theory. Using a ``Raman conductivity" sum rule, we found that doped carriers divide into coherent quasi-particles (QPs) and carriers that remain incoherent. The coherent QPs mainly reside in the vicinity of (pi/2a, pi/2a) regions of the Brillouin zone. The carriers doped beyond optimal doping remain incoherent. Only coherent QPs…
Over the past two decades, advances in computational algorithms have revealed a curious property of the two-dimensional Hubbard model (and related theories) with hole doping: the presence of close-in-energy competing ground states that display very different physical properties. On the one hand, there is a complicated state exhibiting intertwined spin, charge, and pair density wave orders. We call this `type A'. On the other hand, there is a uniform d-wave superconducting state that we denote as `type B'. We advocate, with the support of both microscopic theoretical calculations and experiment…
To understand the origin of unconventional charge-density-wave (CDW) states in cuprate superconductors, we establish the self-consistent CDW equation, and analyze the CDW instabilities based on the realistic Hubbard model, without assuming any $q$-dependence and the form factor. Many higher-order many-body processes, which are called the vertex corrections, are systematically generated by solving the CDW equation. When the spin fluctuations are strong, the uniform $q=0$ nematic CDW with $d$-form factor shows the leading instability. The axial nematic CDW instability at $q = Q_a = (δ,0)$ ($δ\ap…
We present an investigation of charge-compensated antiferromagnetic (Ca$_{x}$La$_{1-x}$)(Ba$_{1.75-x}$La$_{0.25+x}$)Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ single crystals using Raman scattering as well as muon spin rotation. In this system the parameter $x$ controls the Cu-O-Cu superexchange interaction via bond distances and buckling angles. The oxygen content $y$ controls the charge doping. In the absence of doping the two-magnon peak position is directly proportional to the superexchange strength $J$. We find that both $x$ and $y$ affect the peak position considerably. The Néel temperature determined from muon sp…
Recent development in the physics of high-temperature cuprate superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the phenomena of unconventional and non-universal low-energy excitations of hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors and the possible physical origin. A phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with cuprate superconductivity in the ground state appears to provide consistent account for a wide range of experimental findings, including the presence (absence) of pseudogaps and Fermi arcs above the superconducting transition $T_c$ in hole-type (electron-type) cupra…
The low-energy excitations of cuprate superconductors exhibit various characteristics that differ from those of simple Bogoliubov quasiparticles for pure d_{x^2-y^2}-wave superconductors. Here we report experimental studies of spatially resolved quasiparticle tunnelling spectra of hole- and electron-type cuprate superconductors that manifest direct evidences for the presence of competing orders (COs) in the cuprates. In contrast to conventional type-II superconductors that exhibit enhanced local density of states (LDOS) peaking at zero energy near the centre of field-induced vortices, the vort…
The electron-doped cuprates Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 and Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 have been studied by electronic Raman spectroscopy across the entire region of the superconducting (SC) phase diagram. The SC pairing strength is found to be consistent with a weak-coupling regime except in the under-doped region where we observe an in-gap collective mode at 4.5 k_{B}T_c while the maximum amplitude of the SC gap is ~8 k_{B}T_{c}. In the normal state, doped carriers divide into coherent quasi-particles (QPs) and carriers that remain incoherent. The coherent QPs mainly reside in the vicinity of (π/2, π/2) region…
Motivated by recent transport and neutron scattering experiments suggesting an orientational symmetry breaking in underdoped cuprates we present a theoretical study of Raman scattering near a d-wave Pomeranchuk instability (PI). The d-wave component of Raman scattering from electrons and phonons allows to study directly order parameter fluctuations associated with the PI. Approaching the PI from the normal state by lowering the temperature a central peak emerges both in electronic and, as an additional low-frequency feature, in phononic scattering. Approaching the PI in the superconducting sta…
There has been considerable effort expended towards understanding high temperature superconductors (HTSC), and more specifically the cuprate phase diagram as a function of doping level. Yet, the only agreement seems to be that HTSC is an example of a strongly correlated material where Coulomb repulsion plays a major role. This manuscript proposes a model based on a Feshbach resonance pairing mechanism and competing orders. An initial BCS-type superconductivity at high doping is suppressed in the two particle channel by a localized preformed pair (PP) [1] (circular density wave) creating a quan…
We use electronic Raman scattering to study the model single-layer cuprate superconductor HgBa2CuO4+d. In an overdoped sample, we observe a pronounced amplitude enhancement of a high-energy peak related to two-magnon excitations in insulating cuprates upon cooling below the critical temperature Tc. This effect is accompanied by the appearance of the superconducting gap and a pairing peak above the gap in the Raman spectrum, and it can be understood as a consequence of feedback of the Cooper pairing interaction on the high-energy magnetic fluctuations. All of these effects occur already above T…
The recently discovered infinite-layer nickelates show great promise in helping to disentangle the various cooperative mechanisms responsible for high-temperature superconductivity. However, lack of antiferromagnetic order in the pristine nickelates presents a challenge for connecting the physics of the cuprates and nickelates. Here, by using a quantum many-body Green's function-based approach to treat the electronic and magnetic structures, we unveil the presence of many two- and three-dimensional magnetic stripe instabilities that are shown to persist across the phase diagram of LaNiO$_2$. O…
We discuss the characteristic features of triple Cu-O2 layer cuprates superconductors, by comparing those of single and double layer cuprates superconductors. After a brief introduction to multilayer cuprates and their characteristic properties such as the doping imbalance between the inner and outer Cu-O2 planes (IP and OP, respectively) revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance, we present the experimental results of angle resolved photoemission and Raman scattering spectroscopy for the triple layer Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+z which showed two different superconducting gaps opening on the IP and OP. The …
In this paper the phase diagram of high $T_{c}$ cuprates is {\it qualitatively} studied in the context of competing orders: antiferromagnetism, d-wave superconductivity and $d$-density wave. {\it Local} correlation functions are estimated from a mean-field solution of the $t-J$ Hamiltonian. With decreasing doping the superconducting mean-field $T^{MF}_{c}$ and order parameter $d$ begin to decrease below some characteristic doping $x_{c} \simeq 0.2$ where short-range antiferromagnetic correlations begin to develop. {\it Dynamical} properties that involve the energy spectrum, such as the normal …
The symmetries of the order parameter (OP) responsible for pairing and the OP responsible for phase coherence in hole-doped cuprates are discussed. We analyze angle-resolved tunneling, ARPES, Raman scattering and torque measurements performed on hole-doped cuprates. We conclude that, most likely, the OP responsible for phase coherence has the d-wave symmetry whereas the OP responsible for pairing has an anisotropic s-wave symmetry.
The superconducting state of underdoped cuprates is often described in terms of a single energy-scale, associated with the maximum of the (d-wave) gap. Here, we report on electronic Raman scattering results, which show that the gap function in the underdoped regime is characterized by two energy scales, depending on doping in opposite manners. Their ratios to the maximum critical temperature are found to be universal in cuprates. Our experimental results also reveal two different quasiparticle dynamics in the underdoped superconducting state, associated with two regions of momentum space: noda…
Charge-charge, current-current and Raman correlation functions are derived in a consistent way using the unified response theory. The theory is based on the improved description of the conduction electron coupling to the external electromagnetic fields, distinguishing further the direct and indirect (assisted) scattering on the quasi-static disorder. The two scattering channels are distinguished in terms of the energy and momentum conservation laws. The theory is illustrated on the Emery three-band model for the normal state of the underdoped high-$T_c$ cuprates which includes the incoherent e…
We have analyzed the $B_{1g}$ and $B_{2g}$ Raman spectra of electron-doped cuprate superconductors Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ and Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ using a weakly coupled two-band model. One of these two bands is centered around $(\pm π/2, \pm π/2)$ and couples more strongly with the $B_{2g}$ mode, while the other is centered around $(\pm π, 0)$ and $(0, \pm π)$ and couples more strongly with the $B_{1g}$ mode. This model explains in a natural way why the $B_{2g}$ Raman peak occurs at a higher frequency than the $B_{1g}$ one at optimal doping, and how these two peaks change with doping …
The pseudogap regime of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is characterized by a variety of competing orders, the nature of which are still widely debated. Recent experiments have provided evidence for electron nematic order, in which the electron fluid breaks rotational symmetry while preserving translational invariance. Raman spectroscopy, with its ability to symmetry resolve low energy excitations, is a unique tool that can be used to assess nematic fluctuations and nematic ordering tendencies. Here, we compare results from determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the Hubbar…
The extreme variability of observables across the phase diagram of the cuprate high temperature superconductors has remained a profound mystery, with no convincing explanation of the superconducting dome. While much attention has been paid to the underdoped regime of the hole-doped cuprates because of its proximity to a complex Mott insulating phase, little attention has been paid to the overdoped regime. Experiments are beginning to reveal that the phenomenology of the overdoped regime is just as puzzling. For example, the electrons appear to form a Landau Fermi liquid, but this interpretatio…
We show that electron pairing is indispensable for the development of the leading edge gap as observed in ARPES measurement in the underdoped cuprates, even though clear evidence for the violation of the particle-hole symmetry is found in the electron spectrum. To support this assertion, we studied the electron spectrum under the scattering of diffusive antiferromagnetic(AF) spin fluctuation, which is thought to be a major candidate for a competing order in the competing order scenario of the pseudogap phenomena. We find that the Fermi level crossing along the M=$(π,0)$ to X=$(π,π)$ line can o…
We describe two-dimensional quantum spin fluctuations in a superconducting Abrikosov flux lattice induced by a magnetic field applied to a doped Mott insulator. Complete numerical solutions of a self-consistent large N theory provide detailed information on the phase diagram and on the spatial structure of the dynamic spin spectrum. Our results apply to phases with and without long-range spin density wave order and to the magnetic quantum critical point separating these phases. We discuss the relationship of our results to a number of recent neutron scattering measurements on the cuprate super…
We investigate the low energy acoustical and optical modes in $\mathrm{HgBa_2CuO_{4+δ}}$ using inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS). The experimental phonon dispersion and the dynamical structure factor are compared with an atomic shell model, and the set of the atomic potentials obtained are discussed. Our results are also compared with those obtained by Raman spectroscopy and with density-of-state data measured by inelastic neutron scattering.
We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence,…
Studies on the interplay between the charge order and the $d$-wave superconductivity in the copper-oxide high $T_{\rm c}$ superconductors are reviewed with a special emphasis on the exploration based on the unconventional concept of the electron fractionalization and its consequences supported by solutions of high-accuracy quantum many-body solvers. Severe competitions between the superconducting states and the charge inhomogeneity including the charge/spin striped states revealed by the quantum many-body solvers are first addressed for the Hubbard models and then for the {\it ab initio} Hamil…
A theory of electronic Raman scattering in nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi liquids is constructed using the phenomenological electron-electron interaction introduced by Millis, Monien, and Pines. The role of "hot spots" and their resulting signatures in the channel dependent Raman spectra is highlighted, and different scaling regimes are addressed. The effects of self consistency and vertex corrections are compared to a perturbative treatment of the interaction. The theory is then compared to Raman spectra taken in the normal state of cuprate superconductors, and it is shown that many features …
Nanometer thick cuprates are an appealing platform for devices as well as exploring the roles of dimensionality, disorder, and free carrier density in these compounds. To this end we have produced exfoliated crystals of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 on oxidized silicon substrates. The exfoliated crystals were characterized via Atomic Force and polarized Raman microscopies. Proper procedures for production, handling and monitoring of these thin oxides are described. Subtle differences between the exfoliated and bulk crystals are also discussed.
