We describe a subgrid model for including galaxies into hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of galaxy cluster evolution. Each galaxy construct- or galcon- is modeled as a physically extended object within which star formation, galactic winds, and ram pressure stripping of gas are modeled analytically. Galcons are initialized at high redshift (z~3) after galaxy dark matter halos have formed but before the cluster has virialized. Each galcon moves self-consistently within the evolving cluster potential and injects mass, metals, and energy into intracluster (IC) gas through a well-resolved spherical interface layer. We have implemented galcons into the Enzo adaptive mesh refinement code and carried out a simulation of cluster formation in a LambdaCDM universe. With our approach, we are able to economically follow the impact of a large number of galaxies on IC gas. We compare the results of the galcon simulation with a second, more standard simulation where star formation and feedback are treated using a popular heuristic prescription. One advantage of the galcon approach is explicit control over the star formation history of cluster galaxies. Using a galactic SFR derived from the cosmic star formation density, we find the galcon simulation produces a lower stellar fraction, a larger gas core radius, a more isothermal temperature profile, and a flatter metallicity gradient than the standard simulation, in better agreement with observations.
The forwards approach to galaxy formation and evolution is extremely powerful but leaves several questions unanswered. Foremost among these is the origin of disks. A backwards approach is able to provide a more realistic treatment of star formation and feedback and provides a practical guide to eventually complement galaxy formation ab initio.
Using N-body simulations, we have modeled the production and evolution of low surface brightness, diffuse intra-cluster light (ICL) in galaxy clusters. By creating simulated observations of the clusters we have measured the evolution of the ICL luminosity throughout the dynamical history of the clusters. We find that ICL production tends to occur in short, discrete events, which correlate very strongly with strong, small-scale interactions and accretions between groups within the clusters.
A review on numerical simulations of galaxy formation is given. Different numerical methods to solve collisionless and gas dynamical systems are outlined and one particular simulation technique, Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, is discussed in some detail. After a short discussion of the most relevant physical processes which affect the dynamics of the gas, the success and shortcomings of state of the art simulations are discussed via the example of the formation of disk galaxies.
Cosmological LambdaCDM TreeSPH simulations of the formation and evolution of galaxy groups and clusters have been performed. The simulations include: star formation, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metal dependent radiative cooling, strong star burst and (optionally) AGN driven galactic super winds, effects of a meta-galactic UV field and thermal conduction. We report results on the temperature and entropy profiles of the ICM, the X-ray luminosity, cold fraction, M/L and IMLR ratios in gas and stars, metal abundances and gradients. Besides, the properties of the galaxy pop…
I review four decades of numerical simulations of galaxy clusters focussing on the attempts to resolve their internal structure. Overmerging describes the numerical or physical disruption of dark matter halos within dense environments. This problem was inherent in simulations prior to 1998 but can be completely overcome with current algorithms and hardware. We can now resolve many thousands of subhalos within clusters and we may have converged on their inner structure, allowing several new tests of the hierarchical structure formation model and the nature of dark matter.
We discuss simulations of gas at high redshift. We briefly review the methods used and the results for quasar absorption lines. We present gas mass functions and galaxy correlation functions for 5 different cosmological models. Galaxies should be detectable at redshifts greater than 2 by SKAI, and measurements of the gas mass functions and galaxy correlation functions could be used to discriminate between different cosmological models.
Gravitational instabilities naturally give rise to multi-scale structure, which is difficult for traditional Eulerian hydrodynamic methods to accurately evolve. This can be circumvented by adaptively adding resolution (in the form of multiple levels of finer meshes) to relatively small volumes as required. We describe an application of this adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) technique to cosmology, focusing on the formation and evolution of X-ray clusters. A set of simulations are performed on a single cluster, varying the initial resolution and refinement criteria. We find that although new, smal…
The next generation of submillimetre/millimetre instruments will provide us with a deeper insight into the mechanisms that rule galaxy formation. As the brightest starbursts are thought to be heavily obscured at optical wavelengths, the opening of this new window will complement the present observations, and enable a detailed investigation of the hierarchical merging of galaxies at remote epochs. In this context, we will present preliminary results of simulations currently developed for deep galaxy surveys with FIRST. N-body simulations of galaxy mergers are being developed to produce realisti…
Cosmological (LambdaCDM) TreeSPH simulations of the formation and evolution of galaxy groups and clusters have been performed. The simulations invoke star formation, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metal dependent radiative cooling, strong star burst and (optionally) AGN driven galactic super winds, effects of a meta-galactic UV field and thermal conduction. The properties of the galaxy populations in two clusters, one Virgo-like (T~3 keV) and one (sub) Coma-like (T~6 keV), are discussed. The global star formation rates of the cluster galaxies are found to decrease very si…
I present various simulations of an on-going large sub-mm survey, SHADES, showing how constraints can be put on galaxy formation models and cosmology from this survey.
This is the first attempt to construct detailed X-ray spectra of clusters of galaxies from the results of high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations and simulate X-ray observations in order to study velocity fields of the intracluster medium (ICM). The hydrodynamic simulations are based on the recently proposed tsunami model, in which cluster cores are affected by bulk motions of the ICM and turbulence is produced. We note that most other solutions of the cooling flow problem also involve the generation of turbulence in cluster cores. From the mock X-ray observations with Astro-E2 XRS, we find t…
We present numerical simulations investigating the interaction of AGN jets with galaxy clusters, for the first time taking into account the dynamic nature of the cluster gas and detailed cluster physics. The simulations successfully reproduce the observed morphologies of radio sources in clusters. We find that cluster inhomogeneities and large scale flows have significant impact on the morphology of the radio source and cannot be ignored a-priori when investigating radio source dynamics. Morphological comparison suggests that the gas in the centres of clusters like Virgo and Abell 4059 shows s…
Selected results on estimating cosmological parameters from simulated weak lensing data with noise are presented. Numerical simulations of ray tracing through N-body simulations have been used to generate shear and convergence maps due to lensing by large-scale structure. Noise due to the intrinsic ellipticities of a finite number of galaxies is added. In this contribution we present our main results on estimation of the power spectrum and density parameter Omega from weak lensing data on several degree sized fields. We also show that there are striking morphological differences in the weak le…
The X-ray luminosities of the hot halo gas around simulated, Milky Way like disk galaxies have been determined, as a function of redshift. The X-ray luminosity increases significantly with redshift, in some cases as much as a factor 30 going from z=0 to 2. Consequently, the optimal detection redshift can be >~0.5. Results of fully cosmological simulations of galaxy groups and clusters, incorporating star formation, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metal-dependent radiative cooling, galactic super-winds and thermal conduction are presented. X-ray luminosities at z=0 are some…
Numerical hydro-N-body simulations are very important tools for making theoretical predictions for the formation of galaxy clusters. They show that the atmospheres of clusters of galaxies have quite complex angular and thermal structures. The full understanding of the physical processes behind these features can be only achieved by direct comparison of observations to hydro-N-body simulations. Although simple in principle, these comparisons are not always trivial. In fact, real data are convolved with the instrument response which may substantially influence the apparent properties of the stud…
We simulate the formation and evolution of the local galaxy population starting from initial conditions with a smoothed linear density field which matches that derived from the IRAS 1.2 Jy galaxy survey. Our simulations track the formation and evolution of all dark matter haloes more massive than 10e+11 solar masses out to a distance of 8000 km/s from the Milky Way. We implement prescriptions similar to those of Kauffmann et al. (1999) to follow the assembly and evolution of the galaxies within these haloes. We focus on two variants of the CDM cosmology: an LCDM and a tCDM model. Galaxy format…
We present results from two high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of proto-cluster regions at z~2.1. The simulations have been compared to observational results for the socalled Spiderweb galaxy system, the core of a putative proto-cluster region at z = 2.16, found around a radio galaxy. The simulated regions have been chosen so as to form a poor cluster with M200~10^14 h-1 Msun (C1) and a rich cluster with M200~2x10^15 h-1 Msun (C2) at z = 0. The simulated proto-clusters show evidence of ongoing assembly of a dominating central galaxy. The stellar mass of the brightest cluster galaxy (BC…
We introduce a procedure developed by the ``Teramo Stellar Populations Tools'' group (Teramo-SPoT), specifically optimized to obtain realistic simulations of CCD images of elliptical galaxies. Particular attention is devoted to include the Surface Brightness Fluctuation (SBF) signal observed in ellipticals and to simulate the Globular Cluster (GC) system in the galaxy, and the distribution of background galaxies present in real CCD frames. In addition to the physical properties of the simulated objects - galaxy distance and brightness profile, luminosity function of GC and background galaxies,…
We describe TRILEGAL, a new populations synthesis code for simulating the stellar photometry of any Galaxy field. The code attempts to improve upon several technical aspects of star count models, by: dealing with very complete input libraries of evolutionary tracks; using a stellar spectral library to simulate the photometry in any broad-band system; being very versatile allowing easy changes in the input libraries and in the description of all of its ingredients -- like the SFR, AMR, IMF, and geometry of Galaxy components. In a previous paper (Groenewegen et al. 2002), the code was first appl…
N-body simulations of star cluster evolution have reached a high degree of realism, by incorporating more and more elements of stellar dynamics, stellar evolution, and hydrodynamics. At the end of this conference, six participants discussed how to present the increasingly realistic data from star cluster simulations in a way that is most useful for a direct comparison with observations.
We study the effects of radiative cooling, star formation and stellar feedback on the properties and evolution of galaxy clusters using high-resolution Adaptive Mesh Refinement N-body+gasdynamics simulations of clusters forming in the LCDM universe. Cooling leads to the condensation of gas in the inner regions of clusters, which in turn leads to steepening of the dark matter profile. The cooling gas is replaced by the higher-entropy gas from the outer regions, which raises the entropy and temperature of gas in the cluster core. The magnitude of these effects is likely overestimated in the curr…
We simulate a cluster of 144179 stars including 13107 primordial hard binaries (10% of the total number of single stars and binary centers of mass), using direct integration of the equations of motion of all stars and binaries and incorporating the effects of stellar and binary evolution. The initial conditions are representative of young dense star clusters in the Local Group and other nearby galaxies like the Antennae and M82. We find that the early phase of core collapse, driven by mass segregation, is not appreciably delayed by the presence of a large number of hard binaries. By the end of…
We present high resolution N-body/SPH simulations of the interacting cluster 1E0657-56. The main and the sub-cluster are modeled using extended cuspy LCDM dark matter halos and isothermal beta-profiles for the collisional component. The hot gas is initially in hydrostatic equilibrium inside the global potential of the clusters. We investigate the X-ray morphology and derive the most likely impact parameters, mass ratios and initial relative velocities. We find that the observed displacement between the X-ray peaks and the associated mass distribution, the morphology of the bow shock, the surfa…
The detection of excess of soft X-ray or Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) radiation, above the thermal contribution from the hot intracluster medium (ICM), has been a controversial subject ever since the initial discovery of this phenomenon. We use a large--scale hydrodynamical simulation of a concordance $Λ$CDM model, to investigate the possible thermal origin for such an excess in a set of 20 simulated clusters having temperatures in the range 1--7 keV. Simulated clusters are analysed by mimicking the observational procedure applied to ROSAT--PSPC data, which for the first time showed evidences for…
Feedback from star formation is thought to play a key role in the formation and evolution of galaxies, but its implementation in cosmological simulations is currently hampered by a lack of numerical resolution. We present and test a sub-grid recipe to model feedback from massive stars in cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations. The energy is distributed in kinetic form among the gas particles surrounding recently formed stars. The impact of the feedback is studied using a suite of high-resolution simulations of isolated disc galaxies embedded in dark halos with total mass 10^{…
We have performed a series of N-body/hydrodynamical (TreeSPH) simulations of clusters and groups of galaxies, selected from cosmological N-body simulations within a $Λ$CDM framework: these objects have been re-simulated at higher resolution to $z$=0, in order to follow also the dynamical, thermal and chemical input on to the ICM from stellar populations within galaxies. The simulations include metal dependent radiative cooling, star formation according to different IMFs, energy feedback as strong starburst-driven galactic super-winds, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling of gas …
We present a multi-phase representation of the ISM in NB-TSPH simulations of galaxy formation and evolution with particular attention to the case of early-type galaxies. Cold gas clouds are described by the so-called sticky particles algorithm. They can freely move throughout the hot ISM medium; stars form within these clouds and the mass exchange among the three baryonic phases (hot gas, cold clouds, stars) is governed by radiative and Compton cooling and energy feedback by supernova (SN) explosions, stellar winds, and UV radiation. We also consider thermal conduction, cloud-cloud collisions,…
Cosmological (LCDM) TreeSPH simulations of galaxy clusters have been performed, invoking star-formation, chemical evolution with non-instantaneous recycling, metal dependent radiative cooling, strong star-burst and/or AGN driven super-winds, effects of a meta-galactic UV field and thermal conduction. Results for two clusters, one Virgo-like (T~3 keV) and one (sub) Coma-like (T~6 keV), are presented. At z=0, the stellar contents of both clusters consist of a central dominant (cD) galaxy surrounded by galaxies and intracluster (IC) stars. The IC stars are found to contribute 20-40% of the total …
The thermal plasma of galaxy clusters lost most of its information on how structure formation proceeded as a result of dissipative processes. In contrast, non-equilibrium distributions of cosmic rays (CR) preserve the information about their injection and transport processes and provide thus a unique window of current and past structure formation processes. This information can be unveiled by observations of non-thermal radiative processes, including radio synchrotron, hard X-ray, and gamma-ray emission. To explore this, we use high-resolution simulations of a sample of galaxy clusters spannin…
In clusters of galaxies, the specific entropy of intracluster plasma increases outwards. Nevertheless, a number of recent studies have shown that the intracluster medium is subject to buoyancy instabilities due to the effects of cosmic rays and anisotropic thermal conduction. In this paper, we present a new numerical algorithm for simulating such instabilities. This numerical method treats the cosmic rays as a fluid, accounts for the diffusion of heat and cosmic rays along magnetic field lines, and enforces the condition that the temperature and cosmic-ray pressure remain positive. We carry ou…
Galaxies are believed to be in one-to-one correspondence with simulated dark matter subhalos. We use high-resolution N-body simulations of cosmological volumes to calculate the statistical properties of subhalo (galaxy) major mergers at high redshift (z=0.6-5). We measure the evolution of the galaxy merger rate, finding that it is much shallower than the merger rate of dark matter host halos at z>2.5, but roughly parallels that of halos at z<1.6. We also track the detailed merger histories of individual galaxies and measure the likelihood of multiple mergers per halo or subhalo. We examine sat…
We performed high-resolution simulations of a sample of 14 galaxy clusters that span a mass range from 5 x 10^13 M_solar/h to 2 x 10^15 M_solar/h to study the effects of cosmic rays (CRs) on thermal cluster observables such as X-ray emission and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. We analyse the CR effects on the intra-cluster medium while simultaneously taking into account the cluster's dynamical state as well as the mass of the cluster. The modelling of the cosmic ray physics includes adiabatic CR transport processes, injection by supernovae and cosmological structure formation shocks, as well as…
Observations of local X-ray absorbers, high-velocity clouds, and distant quasar absorption line systems suggest that a significant fraction of baryons may reside in multi-phase, low-density, extended, ~100 kpc, gaseous halos around normal galaxies. We present a pair of high-resolution SPH (smoothed particle hydrodynamics) simulations that explore the nature of cool gas infall into galaxies, and the physical conditions necessary to support the type of gaseous halos that seem to be required by observations. The two simulations are identical other than their initial gas density distributions: one…
I review recent progress in numerically simulating the formation and evolution of galaxies in hierarchically clustering universes. Special emphasis is given to results based on high-resolution gas dynamical simulations using the N-body hardware integrator GRAPE. Applications address the origin of the spin of disk galaxies, the structure and kinematics of damped Lyman-alpha systems, and the origin of galaxy morphology and of galaxy scaling laws.
We present the composite luminosity function of a sample of 17 low-redshift galaxy clusters. Our luminosity functions have been measured for an inner region ($r \leq r_{200}$) and an outer region ($r_{200} \leq r \leq 2r_{200}$) centred on each Brightest Cluster Galaxy. The inner region luminosity function has a significantly flatter faint-end slope ($α_{inner}= -1.81 \pm 0.02$) than the outer region ($α_{outer}= -2.07 \pm 0.02$). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that a large fraction of dwarf galaxies near cluster centres are being tidally disrupted.
The results of the analysis of the subclustering in a sample of ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS) galaxy clusters, with data complemented from other studies, are presented. The analysis is performed by using the S-tree method enabling one to study the hierarchical properties of clusters, namely by the detection of the main physical cluster and of its subgroups. The results indicate: (a) systematically lower genuine cluster velocity dispersions than known from previous studies; (b) existence of 2-3 subgroups in each cluster. Due to certain properties of specific dynamical entities, we den…
Complementary views of galaxy clusters in the radio synchrotron, hard X-ray inverse Compton, and high-energy gamma-ray regimes are critical in calibrating them as high-precision cosmological probes. We present predictions for scaling relations between cluster mass and these non-thermal observables. To this end, we use high-resolution simulations of a sample of galaxy clusters spanning a mass range of almost two orders of magnitudes, and follow self-consistent cosmic ray physics on top of the radiative hydrodynamics. Calibrating the magnetic fields of our model with Faraday rotation measurement…
We present the results of a study for galaxy orbits in galaxy clusters using a spectroscopic sample of galaxies in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We have determined the member galaxies of Abell clusters covered by these surveys using the galaxies' redshift and positional data. We have selected 10 clusters using three criteria: the number of member galaxies is greater than or equal to 40, the spatial coverage is complete, and X-ray mass profile is available in the literature. We derive the radial profile of the galaxy number density and velocity dispers…
The efficiency of star formation governs many observable properties of the cosmological galaxy population, yet many current models of galaxy formation largely ignore the important physics of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM). Using hydrodynamical simulations of disk galaxies that include a treatment of the molecular ISM and star formation in molecular clouds (Robertson & Kravtsov 2008), we study the influence of star formation efficiency and molecular hydrogen abundance on the properties of high-redshift galaxy populations. In this work, we focus on a model of low-mass, star for…
A double inflationary model provides perturbation spectra with enhanced power at large scales (Broken Scale Invariant perturbations -- BSI), leading to a promising scenario for the formation of cosmic structures. We describe a series of high-resolution PM simulations with a model for the thermodynamic evolution of baryons in which we are capable of identifying 'galaxy' halos with a reasonable mass spectrum and following the genesis of large and super-large scale structures. The power spectra and correlation functions of 'galaxies' are compared with reconstructed power spectra of the CfA catalo…
The multiple images observed in galaxy cluster Abell 1689 provide strong constraints not only on the mass distribution of the cluster but also on the ensemble properties of the cluster galaxies. Using parametric strong lensing models for the cluster, and by assuming well motivated scaling laws between the truncation radius s and the velocity dispersion sigma of a cluster galaxy we are able to derive sizes of the dark matter halos of cluster galaxies. For the scaling law expected for galaxies in the cluster environment (s propto sigma), we obtain s = 64^{+15}_{-14} (sigma / 220 km/s) kpc. For t…
Galaxy cluster surveys offer great promise for measuring cosmological parameters, but survey analysis methods have not been widely studied. Using methods developed decades ago for galaxy clustering studies, it is shown that nearly exact likelihood functions can be written down for galaxy cluster surveys. The sparse sampling of the density field by galaxy clusters allows simplifications that are not possible for galaxy surveys. An application to counts in cells is explicitly tested using cluster catalogs from numerical simulations and it is found that the calculated probability distributions ar…
In the past, different works based on numerical simulations have been presented to explain magnetic fields (MFs) in the large scale structure and within galaxy clusters. In this review, I will summarize the main findings obtained by different authors and - even if many details are still unclear - I will try to construct a consistent picture of our interpretation of large-scale magnetic fields based on numerical effort. I will also sketch how this is related to our understanding of radio emission and summarize some arguments where our theoretical understanding has to be improved to match the ob…
We present a new algorithm to detect inter-cluster galaxy filaments based upon the assumption that the orientations of constituent galaxies along such filaments are non-isotropic. We apply the algorithm to the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey catalogue and find that it readily detects many straight filaments between close cluster pairs. At large inter-cluster separations (>15 Mpc), we find that the detection efficiency falls quickly, as it also does with more complex filament morphologies. We explore the underlying assumptions and suggest that it is only in the case of close cluster pairs that we ca…
The population and population composition of galaxies in galaxy clusters at present reflect the mass of the clusters and the mass growth of the galaxies in the past. We investigate them for six clusters. We show that galaxies in massive clusters stopped growing at redshifts of ~4. Moreover, we find that some small galaxy clusters (groups) have too many massive galaxies for their apparent masses. One possibility is that these groups are much more massive and in a phase just before virialization. If this is the case, they should be called `infant galaxy clusters' that will be matured clusters in…
We perform ray-tracing simulations evaluating the effect of a cD galaxy on the strong lensing properties of five galaxy cluster halos obtained from N-body simulations. The cD galaxy is modelled using both axially symmetric and elliptical models and assuming several masses for its dark matter halo. The effect of the cD orientation with respect to the mass distribution of the host galaxy cluster is also investigated. The simulations are carried out in an open and a flat model universe with cosmological constant. We find that the enhancement of the cluster lensing cross sections for long and thin…
We present results from Tree+SPH simulations of a galaxy cluster, aimed at studying the metal enrichment of the intra--cluster medium (ICM). The simulation code includes a fairly advanced treatment of star formation, as well as the release of energy feedback and detailed yields from both type-II and type-Ia supernovae, also accurately accounting for the lifetimes of different stellar populations. We perform simulations of a cluster with virial mass ~ 3.9x 10^14 Msun, to investigate the effect of varying the feedback strength and the stellar initial mass function (IMF). Although most of the mod…
The effects of cluster mergers on the metal enrichment of the intra-cluster gas in clusters of galaxies are reviewed. Mergers can influence the metal production as well as the gas ejection processes, which transport the gas from the galaxy potential wells into the intra-cluster gas. Several processes are discussed: ram-pressure stripping, galactic winds and star formation activity. Simulations on different scales ranging from galaxy size to large-scale structure are presented.
We study the dependence of galaxy properties on the clustercentric radius and the environment attributed to the nearest neighbor galaxy using the SDSS galaxies associated with the Abell galaxy clusters. We find that there exists a characteristic scale where the properties of galaxies suddenly start to depend on the clustercentric radius at fixed neighbor environment. The characteristic scale is $1\sim 3$ times the cluster virial radius depending on galaxy luminosity. Existence of the characteristic scale means that the local galaxy number density is not directly responsible for the morphology-…
We describe the construction of catalogues of galaxy clusters from the APM Galaxy survey using an automated algorithm based on Abell-like selection criteria. We investigate the effects of varying several parameters in our selection algorithm, including the magnitude range, and radius from the cluster centre used to estimate the cluster richnesses. We quantify the accuracy of the photometric distance estimates by comparing with measured redshifts, and we investigate the stability and completeness of the resulting catalogues. We find that the angular correlation functions for different cluster c…
The environmental dependencies of the characteristics of spiral galaxy rotation curves are studied in this work. We use our large, homogeneously collected sample of 510 cluster spiral galaxy rotation curves to test the claim that the shape of a galaxy's rotation curve strongly depends on its location within the cluster, and thus presumably on the strength of the local intracluster medium and on the frequency and strength of tidal interactions with the cluster and cluster galaxies. Our data do not corroborate such a scenario, consistent with the fact that Tully-Fisher residuals are independent …
There has been plenty of observational evidence of cluster galaxy evolution such as the Butcher-Oemler effect and the decrease in S0 fraction with increasing redshift. As a modern version, the redshift evolution of total star formation rate (SFR) in clusters has been actively debated recently. However, these studies of redshift trend have been always hampered by the possible mass dependence; due to the observational selection effects, clusters found at higher redshift inevitably tend to be more massive and luminous than local counterparts. Consequently, one has to correct for the mass trend be…
The main ingredients of recent semi-analytic models of galaxy formation are summarised. We present predictions for the galaxy clustering properties of a well specified LCDM model whose parameters are constrained by observed local galaxy properties. We present preliminary predictions for evolution of clustering that can be probed with deep pencil beam surveys.
The cold dark matter model has become the leading theoretical paradigm for the formation of structure in the Universe. Together with the theory of cosmic inflation, this model makes a clear prediction for the initial conditions for structure formation and predicts that structures grow hierarchically through gravitational instability. Testing this model requires that the precise measurements delivered by galaxy surveys can be compared to robust and equally precise theoretical calculations. Here we present a novel framework for the quantitative physical interpretation of such surveys. This combi…
I present an overview of strong and weak gravitational lensing by galaxy clusters. After briefly introducing the principles of gravitational lensing, I discuss the main lessons learned from lensing on the mass distribution in clusters and their relation to cosmology.
In a galaxy cluster, galaxies are mostly collisionless particles in recent epoches. They resemble collisionless cold dark matter particles in some way. Therefore, the spatial distributions of dark matter and cluster galaxies might be expected to possess similar features in the gravitational potential of a cluster. Here we use the galaxy distribution in cluster Cl0024+17 to probe for the ringlike dark matter structure recently discovered by means of strong and weak lensing observations. The galaxies are taken from the catalog of Czoske et al., which contains 650 objects with measured redshifts,…
