In a galaxy cluster, galaxies are mostly collisionless particles in recent epoches. They resemble collisionless cold dark matter particles in some way. Therefore, the spatial distributions of dark matter and cluster galaxies might be expected to possess similar features in the gravitational potential of a cluster. Here we use the galaxy distribution in cluster Cl0024+17 to probe for the ringlike dark matter structure recently discovered by means of strong and weak lensing observations. The galaxies are taken from the catalog of Czoske et al., which contains 650 objects with measured redshifts, of which ~300 galaxies have redshifts in the range 0.37<z<0.41 (and are therefore probable cluster members). We find that, at about the 3-sigma level, the ringlike structure seen in the dark matter measurement is not observed in the projected two-dimensional galaxy distribution.
In the current paradigm of cold dark matter cosmology, large-scale structures are assembling through hierarchical clustering of matter. In this process, an important role is played by megaparsec (Mpc)-scale cosmic shock waves, arising in gravity-driven supersonic flows of intergalactic matter onto dark matter-dominated collapsing structures such as pancakes, filaments, and clusters of galaxies. Here, we report Very Large Array telescope observations of giant (~2 Mpc by 1.6 Mpc), ring-shaped nonthermal radio-emitting structures, found at the outskirts of the rich cluster of galaxies Abell 3376.…
We present a comprehensive mass reconstruction of the rich galaxy cluster Cl 0024+17 at z~0.4 from ACS data, unifying both strong- and weak-lensing constraints. The weak-lensing signal from a dense distribution of background galaxies (~120 per square arcmin) across the cluster enables the derivation of a high-resolution parameter-free mass map. The strongly-lensed objects tightly constrain the mass structure of the cluster inner region on an absolute scale, breaking the mass-sheet degeneracy. The mass reconstruction of Cl 0024+17 obtained in such a way is remarkable. It reveals a ringlike dark…
EGRET gamma-ray archival data used with GALPROP software show two ringlike structures in Milky Way Plane which roughly tally with distribution of stars ([1] & references therein). To understand fully the implications of this and similar results on detailed structure and rotation curve of especially Milky Way Disk as well as rotation curves of other galaxies as derived from spatially resolved spectroscopic data-cubes, a re-examination of the basis of the connection between mass density and rotation curve is warranted. Kenneth F. Nicholson's approach [2], which uses only Newtonian dynamics & gra…
The angular correlation function of the background shear-foreground galaxy distribution probes the three dimensional cross power spectrum between mass and galaxies. The same cross power spectrum is also probed when foreground galaxy distribution is cross-correlated with a distribution of background sources disjoint in redshift space. The kernels that project three dimensional clustering to the two dimensional angular space is different for these two probes. When combined, they allow a study of the galaxy-mass cross power spectrum from linear to non-linear scales. By inverting the background sh…
This paper investigates the possible use of space probes to explore the Milky Way, as a means both of finding life elsewhere in the Galaxy and as finding an answer to the Fermi paradox. I simulate exploration of the Galaxy by first examining how long time it takes a given number of space probes to explore 40,000 stars in a box from -300 to 300 pc above the Galactic thin disk, as a function of Galactic radius. I then model the Galaxy to consist of $\sim{}260,000$ of these 40,000 stellar systems all located in a defined Galactic Habitable Zone and show how long time it takes to explore this zone…
A few, simple and qualitative examples of the potential of galaxy clusters as diagnostics of cosmology are presented. In relation to these we discuss briefly three ongoing or forthcoming cluster surveys in the optical/NIR, X-rays and the cosmic microwave radiation background.
We present a brief introduction to the statistical properties of systems with large fluctuations. We point out that for such systems the relevant statistical quantities are scaling exponents and the nature of fluctuations is completely different from the one belonging to system with small fluctuations. We then propose two test to be performed on galaxy counts data as a function of apparent magnitude, which may clarify in a direct way the nature of the large scale galaxy clustering
Gravitational lensing has now become a popular tool to measure the mass distribution of structures in the Universe on various scales. Here we focus on the study of galaxy's scale dark matter halos with galaxy-galaxy lensing techniques: observing the shapes of distant background galaxies which have been lensed by foreground galaxies allows us to map the mass distribution of the foreground galaxies. The lensing effect is small compared to the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of galaxies, thus a statistical approach is needed to derive some constraints on an average lens population. An advantag…
Bekenstein's alternative to general relativity, TeVeS, reduces to Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) in the galactic limit. On cosmological scales, the (potential well <-> overdensity) relationship is quite different than in standard general relativity. Here we investigate the possibility of cross-correlating galaxies with the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to probe this relationship. At redshifts of order 2, the sign of the CMB-galaxy correlation differs in TeVeS from that in general relativity. We show that this effect is detectable and hence can serve as a powerful discriminator of these…
We show here that quadruple lenses can be useful laboratories to probe whether the potential of the lensing galaxy is purely elliptical or whether an additional distortion is present in the deflector plane. For this test we only have to know the relative image positions of the quadruple lens system and the (relative) center of light position of the lensing galaxy. Furthermore we introduce new methods which easily allow us to determine the location (rotation angle relative to the image positions) of the major axis of the lensing galaxy. In due course we can determine the parity of the four imag…
In addition to study extragalactic stellar populations in their integrated light, the detailed analysis of individual resolved objects has become feasible, mainly for luminous giant stars and for extragalactic planetary nebulae (XPNe) in nearby galaxies. A recently started project at the Astrophysical Institute Potsdam (AIP), called ``XPN--Physics'', aims to verify if XPNe are useful probes to measure the chemical abundances of their parent stellar population. The project involves theoretical and observational work packages.
Quasars at large redshifts provide a powerful probe of structure formation in the early universe. Several arguments suggest that the formation of ellipticals and massive bulges may have involved an early quasar phase. At very large redshifts, such structures are likely to be found at the highest peaks of the density field, and would thus be highly biased tracers: the earliest (massive) galaxy formation may have occurred in the cores of future rich clusters. Preliminary results from our search for clustered protogalaxies around quasars at z > 4 support this idea. Quasars at even larger redshift…
There are several wide field galaxy and cluster surveys planned for the nearest future, e.g. BOSS, WFMOS, ADEPT, Hetdex, SPT, eROSITA. In the simplest approach one would analyze these independently, thus neglecting the extra information provided by the cluster-galaxy cross-pairs. In this paper we have focused on the possible synergy between these surveys by investigating the amount of information encoded in the cross-pairs. We present a model for the cluster-galaxy cross-spectrum within the Halo Model framework. To assess the gain in performance due to inclusion of the cluster-galaxy cross-pai…
We present indications, based on a sample of 303 Abell clusters, for a relation between the dynamical state of clusters and the alignments of galaxy members with their parent cluster major axis orientation as well as with the large scale environment within which the clusters are embedded. The statistical results are complemented with a deep, wide-field case study of galaxy alignments in the cluster A521, which is characterised by multiple merging events (Maurogrdato et al 2000, Ferrari et al. 2003) and whose galaxy members show a strong alignment signal out to $\sim 5 h^{-1}$ Mpc. Our results …
We study the prospects for the current microlensing searches, which have recently discovered several candidates, to yield useful information about the flattening of the Galaxy dark matter halo. Models of HI warps and N-body simulations of galaxy formation suggest that disks commonly form in oblate halos with a tilt between the disk and halo symmetry axes. The microlensing optical depth for the Large Magellanic Cloud depends sensitively on the disk-halo tilt angle in the Milky Way. We conclude that a much larger spread in values for $τ(LMC)$ is consistent with rotation curve constraints than pr…
We show that an expected number ratio of radial arcs (gravitationally lensed images whose major axes lie in the radial direction of a cluster-lens potential) to tangential arcs (gravitationally lensed images whose major axes lie in the tangential direction) has strong dependence on the central density profile of galaxy clusters and has little dependence on other parameters, e.g. cluster temperature, background source galaxy redshift etc.. A comparison of the expected number ratios with observed ratios provides a robust test to constrain the central density profile of galaxy clusters. A tentati…
The case is made that the intracluster medium (ICM) in spiral-rich galaxy groups today probably has undergone much slower evolution than that in elliptical-rich groups and clusters. The environments of proto-clusters and proto-groups at z > 2 are likely similar to spiral-rich group environments at lower redshift. Therefore, like the ICM in spiral-rich groups today, the ICM in proto-groups and proto-clusters at z > 2 is predicted to be significantly multiphased. The QSO Lyman alpha forest in the vicinity of galaxies is an effective probe of the ICM at a wide range of redshift. Two recent observ…
The population of solitary compact objects in the Galaxy is very diffcult to investigate. In this paper we analyze the possibility of using microlensing searches to detect and to analyze the properties of the solitary black holes and neutron stars. Evolution of single and binary stars is considered using the StarTrack population synthesis code. We investigate the properties of the Galactic population of compact objects numerically. We find that the compact object lensing events are concentrated in a region with the radius of $\approx 5$ degrees around the Galactic center. The distribution of m…
Galaxy clustering and galaxy-galaxy lensing probe the connection between galaxies and their dark matter haloes in complementary ways. On one hand, the halo occupation statistics inferred from the observed clustering properties of galaxies are degenerate with the adopted cosmology. Consequently, different cosmologies imply different mass-to-light ratios for dark matter haloes. On the other hand, galaxy-galaxy lensing yields direct constraints on the actual mass-to-light ratios and it can be used to break this degeneracy, and thus to constrain cosmological parameters. In this paper we establish …
Number counts and redshift distribution of gravitational arcs are computed in the field of massive clusters of galaxies to probe the universe at high redshift. Using an accurate modelling for the cluster mass distribution and a model for the spectrophotometric evolution of galaxies, the redshift distribution of gravitational arclets is computed in the field of cluster Abell 2218 and in the Hubble Deep Field where a cluster is artificially located. Counts are very well reproduced in the B band but an important population appears at high redshift which is not seen in deep spectroscopic surveys. …
The Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect has proven to be an extremely powerful tool to study the physical and evolutionary properties of rich clusters of galaxies. Upcoming SZ experiments, with their much improved sensitivity and angular resolution, will provide unique information also on phases of galaxy evolution characterized by the presence of large amounts of hot proto-galactic gas. We present a preliminary analysis of the SZ signals that can be expected at the collapse of the proto-galaxy when, according to the standard scenario, the gas is heated at its virial temperature, and during episodes…
We show how observations of multiply-imaged quasars at high redshift can be used as a probe of dark matter clumps (subhalos with masses ~ 10^9 solar masses) within the virialized extent of more massive lensing halos. A large abundance of such satellites is predicted by numerical simulations of galaxy formation in cold dark matter (CDM) cosmogonies. Small-scale structure within galaxy halos affects the flux ratios of the images without appreciably changing their positions. We use numerical simulations to quantify the effect of dark matter substructure on the distribution of magnifications, and …
In gaussian theories of structure formation, the galaxy cluster abundance is an extremely sensitive probe of the density fluctuation power spectrum and of the density parameter, $Ω$. We develop this theme by deriving and studying in detail the mass function of collapsed objects and its relation to these quantities. Application to current data yields constraints which are degenerate between the amplitude of the perturbations and the density parameter; we nevertheless obtain an important limit on the present day mass perturbation amplitude as a function of $Ω$ and can rule-out the `standard' col…
Several arguments suggest that quasars at z > 4 may be in the cores of future giant ellipticals, and forming at the very highest peaks of the primordial density field. A strong bias-driven primordial clustering is then expected in these fields, which are naturally interpreted as the cores of future rich clusters. High-redshift quasars can thus be used as markers of some of the earliest galaxy formation sites. Recent discoveries of (proto)galaxy companions of z > 4 quasars, and hints of strong clustering among high-z quasars give some support to this idea. The frequency of companions is much hi…
In this paper, we introduce the octopole moment of the light distribution in galaxies as a probe of the weak lensing shear field. While traditional ellipticity estimates of the local shear derived from the quadrupole moment are limited by the width of the intrinsic ellipticity distribution of background galaxies, the dispersion in the intrinsic octopole distribution is expected to be much smaller, implying that the signal from this higher order moment is ultimately limited by measurement noise, and not by intrinsic scatter. We present the computation of the octopole moment and show that curren…
Globular cluster systems provide valuable fossil records of the formation history of their parent galaxies. This review specifically concentrates on using color distributions of the globular cluster systems of elliptical galaxies to distinguish between competing models for the formation of these galaxies. The observational requirements for testing various formation models are discussed, and the results of past and current studies are reviewed. The conclusions of these studies are that most color distributions appear to have two or more peaks, indicating an episodic formation history. This resu…
I will review the latest results for the presence of diffuse light in the nearby universe and at intermediate redshift, and then discuss the latest results from hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of cluster formation on the expected properties of diffuse light in clusters. I shall present how intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) can be used as excellent tracers of the diffuse stellar population in nearby clusters, and how their number density profile and radial velocity distribution can provide an observational test for models of cluster formation. The preliminary comparison of availabl…
Wide or fragile pairs are sensitive probes of the galactic potential, and they have been used to provide information about the galactic tidal field, the density of GMC and the masses of dark matter perturbers present in both the disk and the halo. Halo wide binaries and moving clusters, since they are likely to be the remains of past mergers or of dissolved clusters, can provide information on the dynamical and merger history of our Galaxy. Such remnants should continue to show similar motions over times of the order of their ages. We have looked for phase space groupings among the low-metalli…
The spatial distribution of satellite galaxies around host galaxies can illuminate the relationship between satellites and dark matter subhalos and aid in developing and testing galaxy formation models. Previous efforts to constrain the distribution attempted to eliminate interlopers from the measured projected number density of satellites and found that the distribution is generally consistent with the expected dark matter halo profile of the parent hosts, with a best-fit power-law slope of ~ -1.7 between projected separations of ~30 kpc/h and 0.5 Mpc/h. Here, I use the projected cross-correl…
Standard LCDM predicts that the major merger rate of galaxy-size dark matter halos rises rapidly with redshift. The average number of close companions per galaxy, Nc, is often used to infer the galaxy merger rate, however, recent observational studies suggest that Nc evolves very little with redshift. Here we use a "hybrid" N- body simulation plus analytic substructure model to predict Nc directly. We identify dark matter subhalos with galaxies and show that the observed lack of close pair count evolution arises because the high merger rate per halo at early times is counteracted by a decrease…
Objective-prism surveys which select galaxies on the basis of line-emission are extremely effective at detecting low-luminosity galaxies and constitute some of the deepest available samples of dwarfs. In this study, we confirm that emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in the University of Michigan (UM) objective-prism survey (MacAlpine et al. 1977-1981) are reliable tracers of large-scale structure, and utilize the depth of the samples to examine the spatial distribution of low-luminosity (M$_{B} > $ -18.0) dwarfs relative to higher luminosity giant galaxies (M$_{B} \leq$ -18.0) in the Updated Zwicky…
The ``Synthetic Field Method'' (SFM) was introduced by Gonzalez et al. (1998) to calibrate numbers of distant galaxies as a probe of extinction in a foreground spiral disk. Gonzalez et al. (2003) studied the effect of the foreground disk on these numbers using simulations of current and future instruments for fields in the LMC, M31 and NGC 4536, a galaxy in Virgo. They concluded that: (1) the brighter centers of disks were unsuitable, (2) the granularity of the disk at a fixed surface brightness is the limiting factor in the detection of distant galaxies, and (3) the optimum distance for measu…
Results are presented of a new VLA-ROSAT study that probes the magnetic field strength and distribution over a sample of 16 ``normal'' low redshift (z < 0.1) galaxy clusters. The clusters span two orders of magnitude in X-ray luminosity, and were selected to be free of (unusual) strong radio cluster halos, and widespread cooling flows. Consistent with these criteria, most clusters show a relaxed X-ray morphology and little or no evidence for recent merger activity. Analysis of the rotation measure (RM) data shows cluster-generated Faraday RM excess out to ~0.5 Mpc from cluster centers. The res…
Understanding the galaxy in which we live is one of the great intellectual challenges facing modern science. With the advent of high quality observational data, the chemical evolution modeling of our galaxy has been the subject of numerous studies in the last years. However, all these studies have one missing element which is the evolution of close binaries. Reason: their evolution is very complex and single stars only perhaps can do the job. (Un)Fortunately at present we know that a significant fraction of the observed intermediate mass and massive stars are members of a binary or multiple sy…
We present a formalism describing the physical content of cross-correlation functions between a diffuse background and a population of discrete sources. The formalism is used to interpret cross-correlation signals between the unresolved X-ray background and a galaxy population resolved to high redshift in another spectral band. Specifically, we apply it to the so-called faint blue galaxy population and constrain their X-ray emissivity and clustering properties. A model is presented which satisfies the recently measured constraints on all 3 correlation functions (galaxy/galaxy, background/backg…
We present a detailed model of the absolute number counts, color and redshift distributions of gravitational arclets observed in clusters of galaxies. The framework adopted for galaxy evolution is chosen to fairly reproduce the observed number counts and redshift distribution of field galaxies. Then, the spectrophotometric evolutionary code is coupled with an accurate modelling of two clusters-lens mass distributions (A2218 and A370). We investigate the influence of the mass modelling on the counts and we show that simple cluster-scale potentials can no longer be used for arcs statistics. The …
We present preliminary results of a follow-up survey which aims to characterise in detail those galaxies which hosted Type Ia supernovae found by the Supernova Cosmology Project (SCP). Our survey has two components: Hubble Space Telescope imaging with STIS and Keck spectroscopy with ESI, the goal being to classify each host galaxy into one of three broad morphological/spectral classes and hence to investigate the dependence of supernovae properties on host galaxy type over a large range in redshift. Of particular interest is the supernova Hubble diagram characterised by host galaxy class which…
Upcoming observatories will be able to detect the kinetic Sunyaev-Zel'dovitch (kSZ) effect with unprecendented signal-to-noise, and cross-correlations with foreground signals such as galaxy counts are a promising way to extract additional cosmological information. We consider how well a tomographic galaxy-count cross-correlation experiment, using data from WMAP, ACT and SALT, can significantly constrain the properties of dark energy. We include the need to model a wide range of effects, including those associated with complicated baryonic physics, in our analysis. We demonstrate how much of th…
X-ray observations of galaxy clusters potentially provide powerful cosmological probes if systematics due to our incomplete knowledge of the intracluster medium (ICM) physics are understood and controlled. In this paper, we study the effects of galaxy formation on the properties of the ICM and X-ray observable-mass relations using high-resolution self-consistent cosmological simulations of galaxy clusters and comparing their results with recent Chandra X-ray observations. We show that despite complexities of their formation and uncertainties in their modeling, clusters of galaxies both in obse…
If a galaxy resides in a cluster, then its passage through the pervasive intracluster medium will produce a detectable signature in the X-ray emission from the cluster. The simplest kinematic information that can be extracted from this signature is the galaxy's direction of motion on the plane of the sky. This paper explores the constraints on cluster dynamics that could be derived from such information. In particular, we show that it is possible to define a projected anisotropy parameter, B(R), which is directly analogous to the usual orbital anisotropy parameter. We describe an estimator for…
We have obtained radial velocities of 68 planetary nebulae surrounding the SB0 galaxy NGC 3384 in the Leo I group, using the CTIO 4 m telescope and the Rutgers Fabry-Perot interferometer. The PN system exhibits a well-ordered rotation field aligned with the photometric axes of the galaxy. The rotation curve is flat from about 2 kpc until at least 7 kpc. Our results imply that at least a third of the dynamical mass of the NGC 3379/3384 system may be accounted for in the two bright galaxies.
Cosmic rays produced in cluster accretion and merger shocks provide pressure to the intracluster medium (ICM) and affect the mass estimates of galaxy clusters. Although direct evidence for cosmic-ray ions in the ICM is still lacking, they produce gamma-ray emission through the decay of neutral pions produced in their collisions with ICM nucleons. We investigate the capability of the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST) and imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes (IACTs) for constraining the cosmic-ray pressure contribution to the ICM. We show that GLAST can be used to place stringent u…
We analyze the C4 catalog of galaxy clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to investigate the axis-ratio distribution of the projected two dimensional cluster profiles. We consider only those objects in the catalog whose virial mass is close to 10^{14}h^{-1}M_{sun}, with member galaxies within the scale radius 1000 kpc. The total number of such objects turns out to be 336. We also derive a theoretical distribution by incorporating the effect of projection onto the sky into the analytic formalism proposed recently by Lee, Jing, & Suto. The theoretical distribution of the cluster axis…
We combine photometry and lens modeling to study the properties of 17 gravitational lens galaxies between z=0.1 and 1. Most of the lens galaxies are passively evolving early-type galaxies, with a few spirals. The colors, scale lengths, and ellipticities of lens galaxies are similar to those of the general population of early-type galaxies, although there may be a deficit of apparently round lens galaxies produced by the inclination dependence of lensing cross sections. The projected mass distributions are aligned with the projected light distributions to <~ 10 deg, except in the presence of a …
The first year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) set quantitative constraints on the amplitude of any primordial non-Gaussianity. We run a series of dark matter-only N-body simulations with the WMAP constraints to investigate the effect of the presence of primordial non-Gaussianity on large scale structures. The model parameters can be constrained using the observations of protoclusters associated with Ly-$α$ emitters at high redshift ($2 \leq z \leq 4$), assuming the galaxy velocity bias can be modelled properly. High redshift structure formation potentially provides a more powerful…
Gravitational weak lensing by large scale structures is view as a tool to probe the bias relation between the mass and the light distributions. It is explained how a particular statistic can be used to deproject the 2D mass distribution observed by weak lensing, in order to probe the bias at a given redshift and a given scale. Dependence with the cosmology is written, and observational issues are pointed out, like the importance of the redshift distribution of the galaxies. A signal to noise analysis shows that the scale dependence of the bias can be measured with a rather modest lensing surve…
I discuss how spectroscopy of extragalactic globular clusters provides a powerful probe of the formation history and mass distribution of galaxies. One critical area is spectroscopy of objects which have been identified as candidate young globular clusters through HST imaging of galaxy mergers. I discuss how such data can constrain models of globular cluster and galaxy formation. As an example, I present new spectra which confirm the presence of young globular clusters in NGC 1275. A second way wide-field spectroscopy can be used to probe the formation history and mass distribution of galaxies…
Using WMAP 3-year data at the locations of close to $\sim 700$ X-ray selected clusters we have detected the amplitude of the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (TSZ) effect at the 15$σ$ level, the highest statistical significance reported so far. Owing to the large size of our cluster sample, we are able to detect the corresponding CMB distortions out to large cluster-centric radii. The region over which the TSZ signal is detected is, on average, four times larger in radius than the X-ray emitting region, extending to $\sim 3h_{70}^{-1}$Mpc. We show that an isothermal $β$ model does not fit the electro…
Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), galaxy clustering, and cosmic microwave background anisotropy (CMB) data provide complementary constraints on the nature of the dark energy in the universe. We find that the three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations give a CMB shift parameter of R = (Ω_m H_0^2)^{1/2} \int_0^{z_{CMB}} dz'/H(z')= 1.70 \pm 0.03. Using this new measured value of the CMB shift parameter, together with the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurement from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and SN Ia data from the HST/GOODS program and the first year Supernova L…
(Abridged) Cosmology faces three distinct challenges in the next decade. (1) The dark sector, both dark matter and dark energy, dominates the Universe. Key questions include determining the nature of both. Improved observational probes are crucial. (2) Galaxy formation was initiated at around the epoch of reionization: we need to understand how and when as well as to develop probes of earlier epochs. (3) Our simple dark matter-driven picture of galaxy assembly is seemingly at odds with several observational results, including the presence of ULIRGS at high z, the `downsizing' signature, chemic…
We present UBRI photometry and spectra for 60 quasars found within one square degree centered on the J0053+1234 region, which has been the subject of the Caltech Faint Galaxy Redshift Survey. Candidate quasars were selected by their ultraviolet excess with respect to the stellar locus, and confirmed spectroscopically. The quasars span a wide range in brightness (17.5<B<21.6) and redshift (0.43<z<2.38). These new quasars comprise a grid of absorption probes that can be used to study large-scale structure as well as the correlation between luminous galaxies, non-luminous halos, and Lyman-alpha a…
(abridged) The old Star Cluster (SC) systems surrounding any sofar investigated galaxy represent a powerful tool for the understanding of the cosmological evolution of their host galaxies. Phases of enhanced cluster formation can be identified by reliably age dating the clusters. These are symptoms of violent star formation, results of intense starbursts as commonly seen in merging nearby galaxies and high-z forming galaxies. However, the young SC systems of nearby merging galaxies and the old SC systems of nearby passive galaxies (most likely resulting from high-z starburst events of these ga…
The primordial non-Gaussianity signal, if measured accurately, will allow us to distinguish between different candidate models for the cosmic inflation. Since the galaxy groups located in void regions are rare events, their abundance may be a sensitive probe of the primordial non-Gaussianity. We construct an analytic model for the mass function of void groups in the framework of the extended Press-Schechter theory with non-Gaussian initial conditions and investigate how it depends on the primordial non-Gaussianity parameter. A feasibility study is conducted by fitting the analytic mass functio…
Using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method we perform a global analysis constraining the dynamics of dark energy in light of the supernova (Riess "Gold" samples), galaxy clustering (SDSS 3D power spectra and SDSS lyman-αforest information) and the latest three-year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) observations. We have allowed the dark energy equation of state to get across -1 and pay particular attention to the effects when incorrectly neglecting dark energy perturbations. We find the parameter space of dynamical dark energy is now well constrained and neglecting dark energy …
