In this paper, we present an exact spherically symmetric solution of third order Lovelock gravity in $n$ dimensions which describes the gravitational collapse of a null dust fluid. This solution is asymptotically (anti-)de Sitter or flat depending on the choice of the cosmological constant. Using the asymptotically flat solution for $n \geq 7$ with a power-law form of the mass as a function of the null coordinate, we present a model for a gravitational collapse in which a null dust fluid radially injects into an initially flat and empty region. It is found that a naked singularity is inevitably formed whose strength is different for the $n = 7$ and $n \geq 8$ cases. In the $n=7$ case, the limiting focusing condition for the strength of curvature singularity is satisfied. But for $n \geq 8$, the strength of curvature singularity depends on the rate of increase of mass of the spacetime. These considerations show that the third order Lovelock term weakens the strength of the curvature singularity.
We present a general solution of third order Lovelock gravity in the presence of a specific type II perfect fluid. This solution for linear equation of state, $p=w(ρ-4B)$ contains all the known solutions of third order Lovelock gravity in the literature and some new static and radiating solutions for different values of $w$ and $B$. Specially, we consider the properties of static and radiating solutions for $w=0$ and $w=(n-2)^{-1}$ with B=0 and $B\neq0$. These solutions are asymptotically flat for B=0, while they are asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter for $B\neq0$. The new static solutions for th…
We present exact spherically symmetric null dust solutions in the third order Lovelock gravity with a string cloud background in arbitrary $N$ dimensions,. This represents radiating black holes and generalizes the well known Vaidya solution to Lovelock gravity with a string cloud in the background. We also discuss the energy conditions and horizon structures, and explicitly bring out the effect of the string clouds on the horizon structure of black hole solutions for the higher dimensional general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories. It turns out that the presence of the coupling con…
We present a theorem in d-dimensional static, spherically symmetric spacetime in generic Lovelock gravity coupled with a non-linear electrodynamic source to generate solutions. The theorem states that irrespective of the order of the Lovelock gravity and non-linear Maxwell (NLM) Lagrangian, for the pure electric field case the NLM equations are satisfied by virtue of the Einstein-Lovelock equations. Applications of the theorem, specifically to the study of black hole solutions in Chern-Simons (CS) theory is given. Radiating version of the theorem has been considered, which generalizes the Bonn…
Although gravitational actions diverge in asymptotically AdS spacetimes, boundary counterterms can be added in order to cancel out those divergences; such counterterms are known in general to third order in the Riemann tensor for the Einstein-Hilbert action. Considering foliations of AdS with an $S^m \times H^{d-m}$ boundary, we discuss a simple algorithm which we use to generate counterterms up to sixth order in the Riemann tensor, for the Einstein-Hilbert, Gauss-Bonnet and third-order-Lovelock Lagrangians. We also comment on other theories such as $F(R)$ gravity.
Static asymptotically Lifshitz wormholes and black holes in vacuum are shown to exist for a class of Lovelock theories in d=2n+1>7 dimensions, selected by requiring that all but one of their n maximally symmetric vacua are AdS of radius l and degenerate. The wormhole geometry is regular everywhere and connects two Lifshitz spacetimes with a nontrivial geometry at the boundary. The dynamical exponent z is determined by the quotient of the curvature radii of the maximally symmetric vacua according to n(z^2-1)+1=(l/L)^2, where L corresponds to the curvature radius of the nondegenerate vacuum. Lig…
The objective of the present paper is to analyze the phase transition of asymptotically anti-de Sitter (AdS) black hole solutions in Lovelock gravity in the presence of nonlinear electrodynamics. First, we present the asymptotically AdS black hole solutions for two classes of the Born-Infeld type of nonlinear electrodynamics coupled with Einstein, Gauss-Bonnet and third order Lovelock gravity, separately. Then, in order to discuss the phase transition, we calculate both the heat capacity and the Ricci scalar of the thermodynamical line element. We present a comparison between the singular poin…
We study how the standard definitions of ADM mass and Brown-York quasi-local energy generalize to pure Lovelock gravity. The quasi-local energy is renormalized using the background subtraction prescription and we consider its limit for large surfaces. We find that the large surface limit vanishes for asymptotically flat fall-off conditions except in Einstein gravity. This problem is avoided by focusing on the variation of the quasi-local energy which correctly approaches the variation of the ADM mass for large surfaces. As a result, we obtain a new simple formula for the ADM mass in pure Lovel…
We study properties of static, asymptotically AdS black holes in Lovelock gravity. Our main result is a Smarr formula that gives the mass in terms of geometrical quantities together with the parameters of the Lovelock theory. As in Einstein gravity, the Smarr formula follows from applying the first law to an infinitesimal change in the overall length scale. However, because the Lovelock couplings are dimensionful, we must first prove an extension of the first law that includes their variations. Key ingredients in this construction are the Killing-Lovelock potentials associated with each of the…
A definite form for the boundary term that produces the finiteness of both the conserved quantities and Euclidean action for any Lovelock gravity with AdS asymptotics is presented. This prescription merely tells even from odd bulk dimensions, regardless the particular theory considered, what is valid even for Einstein-Hilbert and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet AdS gravity. The boundary term is a given polynomial of the boundary extrinsic and intrinsic curvatures (also referred to as Kounterterms series). Only the coupling constant of the boundary term changes accordingly, such that it always preserves …
We analyzed static spherically symmetric solutions of the five dimensional (5D) Lovelock gravity in the first order formulation. In the Riemannian sector, when torsion vanishes, Boulware-Deser black hole represents a unique static spherically symmetric black hole solution for the generic choice of the Lagrangian parameters. We showed that the special choice of the Lagrangian parameters, different from the Lovelock Chern-Simons gravity, leads to the existence of the static black hole solution with torsion, which metric is asymptotically AdS. We calculate conserved charges and thermodynamical qu…
We construct the asymptotically flat charged thin-shell wormholes of Lovelock gravity in seven dimensions by cut-and-paste technique, and apply the generalized junction conditions in order to calculate the energy-momentum tensor of these wormholes on the shell. We find that for negative second order and positive third order Lovelock coefficients, there are thin-shell wormholes that respect the weak energy condition. In this case, the amount of normal matter decreases as the third order Lovelock coefficient increases. For positive second and third order Lovelock coefficients, the weak energy co…
We examine the thermodynamics of a new class of asymptotically AdS black holes with non-constant curvature event horizons in Gauss-Bonnet Lovelock gravity, with the cosmological constant acting as thermodynamic pressure. We find that non-trivial curvature on the horizon can significantly affect their thermodynamic behaviour. We observe novel triple points in 6 dimensions between large and small uncharged black holes and thermal AdS. For charged black holes we find a continuous set of triple points whose range depends on the parameters in the horizon geometry. We also find new generalizations o…
We study the renormalization of Entanglement Entropy in holographic CFTs dual to Lovelock gravity. It is known that the holographic EE in Lovelock gravity is given by the Jacobson-Myers (JM) functional. As usual, due to the divergent Weyl factor in the Fefferman-Graham expansion of the boundary metric for Asymptotically AdS spaces, this entropy functional is infinite. By considering the Kounterterm renormalization procedure, which utilizes extrinsic boundary counterterms in order to renormalize the on-shell Lovelock gravity action for AAdS spacetimes, we propose a new renormalization prescript…
We study a higher order conformally coupled scalar tensor theory endowed with a covariant geometric constraint relating the scalar curvature with the Gauss-Bonnet scalar. It is a particular Horndeski theory including a canonical kinetic term but without shift or parity symmetry for the scalar. The theory also stems from a Kaluza-Klein reduction of a well defined higher dimensional metric theory. Properties of an asymptotically flat spherically symmetric black hole are analyzed, and new slowly rotating and radiating extensions are found. Through disformal transformations of the static configura…
The regularization procedure for getting the four-dimensional nontrivial Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet effective description of gravity and its Lovelock generalization has been recently developed. Here we propose the regularization for the three-dimensional gravity, which is based on the rescaling of the coupling constants and, afterward, taking the limit $D \to 3$. We obtain the generalization of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli solution in the presence of the higher curvature (Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock) corrections of any order. The obtained general solution shows a peculiar behavior: The event horizo…
Five-dimensional black holes are studied in Lovelock gravity coupled to Hoffmann-Infeld non-linear electrodynamics. It is shown that some of these solutions present a double peak behavior of the temperature as a function of the horizon radius. This feature implies that the evaporation process, though drastic for a period, leads to an eternal black hole remnant. Moreover, the form of the caloric curve corresponds to the existence of a plateau in the evaporation rate, which implies that black holes of intermediate scales turn out to be unstable. The geometrical aspects, such as the absence of co…
Lovelock theory is a natural extension of Einstein theory of gravity to higher dimensions, and it is of great interest in theoretical physics as it describes a wide class of models. In particular, it describes string theory inspired ultraviolet corrections to Einstein-Hilbert action, while admits the Einstein general relativiy and the so called Chern-Simons theories of gravity as particular cases. Recently, five-dimensional Lovelock theory has been considered in the literature as a working example to illustrate the effects of including higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT correspon…
We find an exact solution in dimensionally continued gravity in arbitrary dimensions which describes the gravitational collapse of a null dust fluid. Considering the situation that a null dust fluid injects into the initially anti-de Sitter spacetime, we show that a naked singularity can be formed. In even dimensions, a massless ingoing null naked singularity emerges. In odd dimensions, meanwhile, a massive timelike naked singularity forms. These naked singularities can be globally naked if the ingoing null dust fluid is switched off at a finite time; the resulting spacetime is static and asym…
It is proven that a solution to the Einstein-Maxwell equations whose gravitational and electromagnetic radiation fields vanish is in fact stationary in a neighbourhood of spatial infinity. That is, if the Weyl and Faraday tensors decay suitably fast, then there exists a time-like Killing vector field in the region outside the bifurcate horizon of a sphere of sufficiently large radius. In particular, truly dynamical time-periodic electrovacuum spacetimes do not exist. This is an extension of earlier work by Alexakis and Schlue and Bičák, Sholtz and Tod to include electromagnetism.
Recently Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)] formulated a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in which the Gauss-Bonnet coupling has been rescaled as $α/(D-4)$ and the $4D$ theory is defined as the limit $D \rightarrow 4$, which preserves the number degrees of freedom thereby free from the Ostrogradsky instability. We present exact spherically symmetric nonstatic null dust solutions in the novel 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity that bypasses the Lovelock theorem. Our solution represents radiating black holes and regains, in the limit $α\rightarrow 0$, the famous Vaidya black h…
f(Lovelock) gravities are simple generalizations of the usual f(R) and Lovelock theories in which the gravitational action depends on some arbitrary function of the corresponding dimensionally-extended Euler densities. In this paper we study several aspects of these theories in general dimensions. We start by identifying the generalized boundary term which makes the gravitational variational problem well-posed. Then, we show that these theories are equivalent to certain scalar-tensor theories and how this relation is characterized by the Hessian of f. We also study the linearized equations of …
In this work, we consider wormhole geometries in third-order Lovelock gravity and investigate the possibility that these solutions satisfy the energy conditions. In this framework, by applying a specific equation of state, we obtain exact wormhole solutions, and by imposing suitable values for the parameters of the theory, we find that these geometries satisfy the weak energy condition in the vicinity of the throat, due to the presence of higher order curvature terms. Finally, we trace out a numerical analysis, by assuming a specific redshift function, and find asymptotically flat solutions th…
In this paper we construct new exact solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity, describing asymptotically flat black strings. The solutions exist also under the inclusion of a cosmological term in the action, and are supported by scalar fields with finite energy density, which are linear along the extended direction and have kinetic terms constructed out from Lovelock tensors. The divergenceless nature of the Lovelock tensors in the kinetic terms ensures that the whole theory is second order. For spherically, hyperbolic and planar symmetric spacetimes on the string, we obtain an …
We study the modes of evolution of massless scalar fields in the asymptotically AdS spacetime surrounding maximally symmetric black holes of large and intermediate size in the Lovelock model. It is observed that all modes are purely damped at higher orders. Also, the rate of damping is seen to be independent of order at higher dimensions. The asymptotic form of these frequencies for the case of large black holes is found analytically. Finally, the area spectrum for such black holes is found from these asymptotic modes.
We investigate the black hole evaporation process in Lovelock gravity with diverse dimensions. By selecting the appropriate coefficients, the space-time solutions can possess a unique AdS vacuum with a fixed cosmological constant $Λ=-\frac{(d-1)(d-2)}{2\ell^{2}}$. The black hole solutions can be divided into two cases: $d>2k+1$ and $d=2k+1$. In the case of $d>2k+1$, the black hole is in an analogy with the Schwarzschild AdS black hole, and the life time is bounded by a time of the order of $\ell^{d-2k+1}$, which reduces Page's result on the Einstein gravity in $k=1$. In the case of $d=2k+1$, t…
We consider spherically symmetric black holes in generic Lovelock gravity. Using geometrodynamical variables we do a complete Hamiltonian analysis, including derivation of the super-Hamiltonian and super-momentum constraints and verification of suitable boundary conditions for asymptotically flat black holes. Our analysis leads to a remarkably simple fully reduced Hamiltonian for the vacuum gravitational sector that provides the starting point for the quantization of Lovelock block holes. Finally, we derive the completely reduced equations of motion for the collapse of a spherically symmetric …
In this paper, we present the asymptotically flat black hole solutions for arbitrary values of coefficients in third order Lovelock gravity, and then derive gravitational mass, Hawking temperature and entropy of the black holes. In addition, based on a Hamilton-Jacobi approach beyond the semiclassical approximation, we compute the corrected temperature and entropy of the third order Lovelock black holes in seven dimensional spacetimes. By considering the coefficients α2 = α and α3 = α2/3, we obtain a special black hole solution. Later, we perform the local and global stability analysis of the …
In this work, we explore asymptotically flat charged thin-shell wormholes of third order Lovelock gravity in higher dimensions, taking into account the cut-and-paste technique. Using the generalized junction conditions, we determine the energy-momentum tensor of these solutions on the shell, and explore the issue of the energy conditions and the amount of normal matter that supports these thin-shell wormholes. Our analysis shows that for negative second order and positive third-order Lovelock coefficients, there are thin-shell wormhole solutions that respect the weak energy condition. In this …
Junction conditions for vacuum solutions in five-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity are studied. We focus on those cases where two spherically symmetric regions of space-time are joined in such a way that the induced stress tensor on the junction surface vanishes. So a spherical vacuum shell, containing no matter, arises as a boundary between two regions of the space-time. Such solutions are a generalized kind of spherically symmetric empty space solutions, described by metric functions of the class $C^0$. New global structures arise with surprising features. In particular, we show that…
By employing the higher (N\TEXTsymbol{>}5) dimensional version of the Wu-Yang Ansatz we obtain magnetically charged new black hole solutions in the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Lovelock (EYML) theory with second ($α_{2}$) and third ($α_{3}$)order parameters. These parameters, where $α_{2}$ is also known as the Gauss-Bonnet parameter, modify the horizons (and the resulting thermodynamical properties) of the black holes. It is shown also that asymptotically ($r\to \infty $), these parameters contribute to an effective cosmological constant -without cosmological constant- so that the solution behaves de-S…
We investigate a novel mechanism for phase transitions that is a distinctive feature of higher-curvature gravity theories. For definiteness, we bound ourselves to the case of Lovelock gravities. These theories are known to have several branches of asymptotically AdS solutions. Here, extending our previous work, we show that phase transitions among some of these branches are driven by a thermalon configuration: a bubble separating two regions of different effective cosmological constants, generically hosting a black hole in the interior. Above some critical temperature, this thermalon configura…
We derive a BPS-like first order system of equations for a family of flat static domain walls (DWs) of dimensionally extended cubic Lovelock Gravity coupled to massive scalar self-interacting matter. The explicit construction of such DWs is achieved by introducing of an appropriate matter superpotential. We further analyse the dependence of the geometric properties of the asymptotically AdSd space-times representing distinct DWs on the shape of the matter potential, on the values of the Lovelock couplings and on the scalar field boundary conditions. Few explicit examples of Lovelock DWs interp…
A general analysis is given of solutions that can be constructed by this method of geometric surgery. Such solutions are a generalized kind of spherically symmetric empty space solutions, described by metric functions…
In this work the \textit{chemistry} of asymptotically AdS black hole, charged and uncharged, solutions of Pure Lovelock gravity is discussed. For this the mass parameter of black holes is identified with the enthalpy of the system together with the promotion of the cosmological constant to a thermodynamics variable proportional to the \textit{pressure} of the system. The equations of state for both, charged and uncharged, are obtained. It is shown that the charged case behaves as a Van der Waals fluid. The existence of a first order phase transition between small stable/large stable black hole…
In this paper, we consider third order Lovelock gravity with a cosmological constant term in an n-dimensional spacetime $\mathcal{M}^{4}\times \mathcal{K}^{n-4}$, where $\mathcal{K}^{n-4} $ is a constant curvature space. We decompose the equations of motion to four and higher dimensional ones and find wormhole solutions by considering a vacuum $\mathcal{K}^{n-4} $ space. Applying the latter constraint, we determine the second and third order Lovelock coefficients and the cosmological constant in terms of specific parameters of the model, such as the size of the extra dimensions. Using the obta…
We investigate the thermodynamic behavior of maximally symmetric charged, asymptotically AdS black hole solutions of Lovelock gravity. We explore the thermodynamic stability of such solutions by the ordinary method of calculating the specific heat of the black holes and investigating its divergences which signal second order phase transitions between black hole states. We then utilize the methods of thermodynamic geometry of black hole spacetimes in order to explain the origin of these points of divergence. We calculate the curvature scalar corresponding to a Legendre-invariant thermodynamic m…
We present a new class of black hole solutions in third-order Lovelock gravity whose horizons are Einstein space with two supplementary conditions on their Weyl tensors. These solutions are obtained with the advantage of higher curvature terms appearing in Lovelock gravity. We find that while the solution of third-order Lovelock gravity with constant-curvature horizon in the absence of a mass parameter is the anti de Sitter (AdS) metric, this kind of solution with nonconstant- curvature horizon is only asymptotically AdS and may have horizon. We also find that one may have an extreme black hol…
In Phys. Rev. D 79, 064016 (2009) it was claimed that quasinormal modes which any stationary, spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat black hole emits in the eikonal regime are determined by the parameters of the circular null geodesic: the real and imaginary parts of the quasinormal mode are multiples of the frequency and instability timescale of the circular null geodesics respectively. We shall consider asymptotically flat black hole in the Einstein-Lovelock theory, find analytical expressions for gravitational quasinormal modes in the eikonal regime and analyze the null geodesics. Co…
We present the asymptotically AdS solutions of the Einstein gravity with hyperbolic horizons in the presence of $So(n(n-1)/2-1, 1)$ Yang-Mills fields governed by the non-Abelian Born-Infeld lagrangian. We investigate the properties of these solutions as well as their asymptotic behavior in varies dimensions. The properties of these kind of solutions are like the Einstein-Yang-Mills solutions. But the differences seems to appear in the role of the mass, charge and born-Infeld parameter $β$, in the solutions. For example in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory the solutions with non-negative mass cannot p…
Lovelock theory provides a tractable model of higher-curvature gravity in which several questions can be studied analytically. This is the reason why, in the last years, this theory has become the favorite arena to study the effects of higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT correspondence. Lovelock theory also admits extensions that permit to accommodate matter coupled to gravity in a non-minimal way. In this setup, problems such as the backreaction of matter on the black hole geometry can also be solved exactly. In this paper, we study the thermodynamics of black holes in theories o…
We report a new result on the nice section construction used in the definition of rest frame systems in general relativity. This construction is needed in the study of non trivial gravitational radiating systems. We prove existence, regularity and non-self-crossing property of solutions of the nice section equation for general asymptotically flat space times. This proves a conjecture enunciated in a previous work.
Asymptotically flat black holes in $2+1$ dimensions are a rarity. We study the recently found black flower solutions (asymptotically flat black holes with deformed horizons), static black holes, rotating black holes and the dynamical black flowers (black holes with radiative gravitons ) of the purely quadratic version of new massive gravity. We show how they appear in this theory and we also show that they are also solutions to the infinite order extended version of the new massive gravity, that is the Born-Infeld extension of new massive gravity with an amputated Einsteinian piece. The same m…
Lanczos-Lovelock theories of gravity, in its first order version, are studied on asymptotically locally anti de Sitter spaces. It is shown that thermodynamics satisfies the standard behavior and an expression for entropy is found for this formalism. Finally a short analysis of the algebra of conserved charges is displayed.
We find that AdS spacetime with a non-trivial linear dilaton field is an exact solution in the effective action of string theory, which is described by gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet curvature terms coupled to a dilaton field in the string frame. The AdS radius is determined by the spacetime dimensions and the coupling constants of curvature corrections. We also construct the asymptotically AdS black hole solutions with a linear dilaton field numerically. We discuss the thermodynamical properties of those solutions. Extending the model to the case with the even-order higher Lovelock curvature t…
We construct a quintic quasi-topological gravity in five dimensions, i.e. a theory with a Lagrangian containing $\mathcal{R}^5$ terms and whose field equations are of second order on spherically (hyperbolic or planar) symmetric spacetimes. These theories have recently received attention since when formulated on asymptotically AdS spacetimes might provide for gravity duals of a broad class of CFTs. For simplicity we focus on five dimensions. We show that this theory fulfils a Birkhoff's Theorem as it is the case in Lovelock gravity and therefore, for generic values of the couplings, there is no…
We construct the most general, to cubic order in curvature, theory of gravity whose (most general) static spherically symmetric vacuum solutions are fully described by a single field equation. The theory possess the following remarkable properties: i) it has a well-defined Einstein gravity limit ii) it admits `Schwarzschild-like' solutions characterized by a single metric function iii) on maximally symmetric backgrounds it propagates the same degrees of freedom as Einstein's gravity iv) Lovelock and quasi-topological gravities, as well as the recently developed Einsteinian cubic gravity [ArXiv…
We present a new cubic theory of gravity in five dimensions which has second order traced field equations, analogous to BHT new massive gravity in three dimensions. Moreover, for static spherically symmetric spacetimes all the field equations are of second order, and the theory admits a new asymptotically locally flat black hole. Furthermore, we prove the uniqueness of this solution, study its thermodynamical properties, and show the existence of a C-function for the theory following the arguments of Anber and Kastor (arXiv:0802.1290 [hep-th]) in pure Lovelock theories. Finally, we include the…
The Bondi-Metzner-Sachs-van der Burg (BMS) group is the asymptotic symmetry group of radiating asymptotically flat spacetimes. It has recently received renewed interest in the context of the flat holography and the infrared structure of gravity. In this thesis, we investigate the consequences of considering extensions of the BMS group in four dimensions with superrotations. In particular, we apply the covariant phase space methods on a class of first order gauge theories that includes the Cartan formulation of general relativity and specify this analysis to gravity in asymptotically flat space…
While cubic Quasi-topological gravity is unique, there is a family of quartic Quasi-topological gravities in five dimensions. These theories are defined by leading to a first order equation on spherically symmetric spacetimes, resembling the structure of the equations of Lovelock theories in higher-dimensions, and are also ghost free around AdS. Here we construct slowly rotating black holes in these theories, and show that the equations for the off-diagonal components of the metric in the cubic theory are automatically of second order, while imposing this as a restriction on the quartic theori…
An analysis of radiating perfect fluid models with asymptotically AdS boundary conditions is presented. Such scenarios consist of a spherical gas of radiation (a "star") localised near the centre of the spacetime due to the confining nature of the AdS potential. We consider the variation of the total mass of the star as a function of the central density, and observe that for large enough dimensionality, the mass increases monotonically with the density. However in the lower dimensional cases, oscillations appear, indicating that the perfect fluid model of the star is becoming unrealistic. We f…
In [M. Dafermos and I. Rodnianski, A new physical-space approach to decay for the wave equation with applications to black hole spacetimes, in XVIth International Congress on Mathematical Physics, Pavel Exner ed., Prague 2009 pp. 421-433, 2009, arXiv:0910.4957], Dafermos and Rodnianski presented a novel approach to establish uniform decay rates for solutions $ϕ$ to the scalar wave equation $\square_{g}ϕ=0$ on Minkowski, Schwarzschild and other asymptotically flat backgrounds. This paper generalises the methods and results of the above paper to a broad class of asymptotically flat spacetimes $(…
The symmetries of asymptotically flat spacetimes in general relativity are given by the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) group, though there are proposed generalizations of its symmetry algebra. Associated with each symmetry is a charge and a flux, and the values of these charges and their changes can characterize a spacetime. The charges of the BMS group are relativistic angular momentum and supermomentum (which includes 4-momentum); the extensions of the BMS algebra also include generalizations of angular momentum called "super angular momentum." Several different formalisms have been used to defin…
Lovelock theory of gravity provides a tractable model to investigate the effects of higher-curvature terms in the context of AdS/CFT. Yielding second order, ghost-free field equations, this theory represents a minimal setup in which higher-order gravitational couplings in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces, including black holes, can be solved analytically. This however has an obvious limitation as in dimensions lower than seven, the contribution from cubic or higher curvature terms is merely topological. Therefore, in order to go beyond quadratic order and study higher terms in AdS_5 …
