A graph is (7, 2)-edge-choosable if, for every assignment of lists of size 7 to the edges, it is possible to choose two colors for each edge from its list so that no color is chosen for two incident edges. We show that every 3-edge-colorable graph is (7, 2)-edge-choosable and also that many non-3-edge-colorable 3-regular graphs are (7, 2)-edge-choosable.
For positive integers $a$ and $b$, a graph $G$ is $(a:b)$-choosable if, for each assignment of lists of $a$ colors to the vertices of $G,$ each vertex can be colored with a set of $b$ colors from its list so that adjacent vertices are colored with disjoint sets. We show that for positive integers $a$ and $b$, every bipartite planar graph is $(a:b)$-choosable iff $\frac{a}{b} \ge 3$. For general planar graphs, we show that if $\frac{a}{b} < 4\frac{2}{5}$, then there exists a planar graph that is not $(a:b)$-choosable, thus improving on a result of X. Zhu, which had $4\frac{2}{9}$. Lastly, we sh…
We recently introduced proportional choosability, a new list analogue of equitable coloring. Like equitable coloring, and unlike list equitable coloring (a.k.a. equitable choosability), proportional choosability bounds sizes of color classes both from above and from below. In this note, we show that a graph is proportionally 2-choosable if and only if it is a linear forest such that its largest component has at most 5 vertices and all of its other components have two or fewer vertices. We also construct examples that show that characterizing equitably 2-choosable graphs is still open.
Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices and let $\mathcal{L}_k$ be an arbitrary function that assigns each vertex in $G$ a list of $k$ colours. Then $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_k$-list colourable if there exists a proper colouring of the vertices of $G$ such that every vertex is coloured with a colour from its own list. We say $G$ is $k$-choosable if for every such function $\mathcal{L}_k$, $G$ is $\mathcal{L}_k$-list colourable. The minimum $k$ such that $G$ is $k$-choosable is called the list chromatic number of $G$ and is denoted by $χ_L(G)$. Let $χ_L(G) = s$ and let $t$ be a positive integer less than …
DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) is a generalization of list coloring introduced recently by Dvořák and Postle (2017). In this paper, we prove that every planar graph $G$ without $4$-cycles adjacent to $k$-cycles is DP-$4$-colorable for $k=5$ and $6$. As a consequence, we obtain two new classes of $4$-choosable planar graphs. We use identification of verticec in the proof, and actually prove stronger statements that every pre-coloring of some short cycles can be extended to the whole graph.
A colouring of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a function $c: V\rightarrow\{1,2,\ldots \}$ such that $c(u)\neq c(v)$ for every $uv\in E$. A $k$-regular list assignment of $G$ is a function $L$ with domain $V$ such that for every $u\in V$, $L(u)$ is a subset of $\{1, 2, \dots\}$ of size $k$. A colouring $c$ of $G$ respects a $k$-regular list assignment $L$ of $G$ if $c(u)\in L(u)$ for every $u\in V$. A graph $G$ is $k$-choosable if for every $k$-regular list assignment $L$ of $G$, there exists a colouring of $G$ that respects $L$. We may also ask if for a given $k$-regular list assignment $L$ of a given g…
A graph is $\ell$-choosable if, for any choice of lists of $\ell$ colors for each vertex, there is a list coloring, which is a coloring where each vertex receives a color from its list. We study complexity issues of choosability of graphs when the number $k$ of colors is limited. We get results which differ surprisingly from the usual case where $k$ is implicit and which extend known results for the usual case. We also exhibit some classes of graphs (defined by structural properties of their blocks) which are choosable.
An equitable coloring is a proper coloring of a graph such that the sizes of the color classes differ by at most one. A graph $G$ is equitably $k$-colorable if there exists an equitable coloring of $G$ which uses $k$ colors, each one appearing on either $\lfloor |V(G)|/k \rfloor$ or $\lceil |V(G)|/k \rceil$ vertices of $G$. In 1994, Fu conjectured that for any simple graph $G$, the total graph of $G$, $T(G)$, is equitably $k$-colorable whenever $k \geq \max\{χ(T(G)), Δ(G)+2\}$ where $χ(T(G))$ is the chromatic number of the total graph of $G$ and $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. We investig…
Let $G$ be a plane graph. A vertex-colouring $φ$ of $G$ is called {\em facial non-repetitive} if for no sequence $r_1 r_2 \dots r_{2n}$, $n\geq 1$, of consecutive vertex colours of any facial path it holds $r_i=r_{n+i}$ for all $i=1,2,\dots,n$. A plane graph $G$ is {\em facial non-repetitively $l$-choosable} if for every list assignment $L:V\rightarrow 2\sp{\mathbb{N}}$ with minimum list size at least $l$ there is a facial non-repetitive vertex-colouring $φ$ with colours from the associated lists. The {\em facial Thue choice number}, $π_{fl}(G)$, of a plane graph $G$ is the minimum number $l$ …
The list coloring problem is a variation of the classical vertex coloring problem, extensively studied in recent years, where each vertex has a restricted list of allowed colors, and having some variations as the $(γ,μ)$-coloring, where the color lists have sequential values with known lower and upper bounds. This work discusses the choosability property, that consists in determining the least number $k$ for which it has a proper list coloring no matter how one assigns a list of $k$ colors to each vertex. This is a $Π_2^P$-complete problem, however, we show that $k$-$(γ,μ)$-choosability is an …
It was conjectured by Ohba and confirmed recently by Noel et al. that, for any graph $G$, if $|V(G)|\le 2χ(G)+1$ then $χ_l(G)=χ(G)$. This indicates that the graphs with high chromatic number are chromatic-choosable. We show that this is also the case for uniform hypergraphs and further propose a generalized version of Ohba's conjecture: for any $r$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with $r\geq 2$, if $|V(H)|\le rχ(H)+r-1$ then $χ_l(H)=χ(H)$. We show that the condition of the proposed conjecture is sharp by giving two classes of $r$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ with $|V(H)|= rχ(H)+r$ and $χ_l(H)>χ(H)$. To supp…
In this paper, we construct intriguing sets in five classes of strongly regular graphs defined on nonisotropic points of finite classical polar spaces, and determine their intersection numbers.
We enumerate the independent sets of several classes of regular and almost regular graphs and compute the corresponding generating functions. We also note the relations between these graphs and other combinatorial objects and, in some cases, construct the corresponding bijections.
Image partition regular matrices near zero generalizes many classical results of Ram- sey Theory. There are several characterizations of finite image partition regular matrices near zero. Contrast to the finite cases there are only few classes of matri- ces that are known to be infinite image partition regular near zero. In this present work we have produced several new examples of such classes.
We give two constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs on finite fields $\F_q$ by using union of cyclotomic classes and index 2 Gauss sums. In particular, we obtain twelve infinite families of strongly regular graphs with new parameters.
We describe a practical algorithm which computes the accepting automaton for the insertion encoding of a permutation class, whenever this insertion encoding is regular. This algorithm is implemented in the accompanying Maple package INSENC, which can automatically compute the rational generating functions for such classes.
In this paper, we give a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs and a construction of skew Hadamard difference sets. Both constructions are based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields, and they generalize the constructions given by Feng and Xiang \cite{FX111,FX113}. Three infinite families of strongly regular graphs with new parameters are obtained. The main tools that we employed are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.
This paper proves explicit formulas for the number of dissections of a convex regular polygon modulo the action of the cyclic and dihedral groups. The formulas are obtained by making use of the Cauchy-Frobenius Lemma as well as bijections between rotationally symmetric dissections and simpler classes of dissections. A number of special cases of these formulas are studied. Consequently, some known enumerations are recovered and several new ones are provided.
Machines whose main purpose is to permute and sort data are studied. The sets of permutations that can arise are analysed by means of finite automata and avoided pattern techniques. Conditions are given for these sets being enumerated by rational generating functions.
We develop the theory of equiangular lines in Euclidean spaces. Our focus is on the question of when a Seidel matrix having precisely three distinct eigenvalues has a regular graph in its switching class. We make some progress towards an answer to this question by finding some necessary conditions and some sufficient conditions. Furthermore, we show that the cardinality of an equiangular line system in $18$ dimensional Euclidean space is at most $60$.
For given graph $H$ and graphical property $P$, the conditional chromatic number $χ(H,P)$ of $H$, is the smallest number $k$, so that $V(H)$ can be decomposed into sets $V_1,V_2,\ldots, V_k$, in which $H[V_i]$ satisfies the property $P$, for each $1\leq i\leq k$. When property $P$ be that each color class contains no copy of $G$, we write $χ_{G}(H)$ instead of $χ(G,P)$, which is called the $G$-free chromatic number. Due to this, we say $H$ has a $k$-$G$-free coloring if there is a map $c : V(H) \longrightarrow \{1,\ldots,k\}$, so that each of the color classes of $c$ be $G$-free. Assume that f…
Seymour's Decomposition Theorem for regular matroids states that any matroid representable over both GF(2) and GF(3) can be obtained from matroids that are graphic, cographic, or isomorphic to R10 by 1-, 2-, and 3-sums. It is hoped that similar characterizations hold for other classes of matroids, notably for the class of near-regular matroids. Suppose that all near-regular matroids can be obtained from matroids that belong to a few basic classes through k-sums. Also suppose that these basic classes are such that, whenever a class contains all graphic matroids, it does not contain all cographi…
It is known that the automorphism group of the elementary abelian $2$-group $Z_2^n$ is isomorphic to the general linear group $GL(n,F_2)$ of degree $n$ over $F_2$. Let $W$ be the collection of permutation matrices of order $n$. It is clear that $W\le GL(n,F_2)$. In virtue of this, we consider the Cayley graph $Cay(Z_2^n,S)$, where $S$ is the union of some orbits under the action of $W$. We call such graphs the orbit Cayley graphs over $Z_2^n$. In this paper, we give eight infinite families of strongly regular graphs among orbit Cayley graphs over $Z_2^n$, in which six families are new as we kn…
The first author introduced the circuit-cocircuit reversal system of an oriented matroid, and showed that when the underlying matroid is regular, the cardinalities of such system and its variations are equal to special evaluations of the Tutte polynomial (e.g., the total number of circuit-cocircuit reversal classes equals $t(M;1,1)$, the number of bases of the matroid). By relating these classes to activity classes studied by the first author and Las Vergnas, we give an alternative proof of the above results and a proof of the converse statements that these equalities fail whenever the underly…
A proper vertex coloring of a simple graph is $k$-forested if the graph induced by the vertices of any two color classes is a forest with maximum degree less than $k$. A graph is $k$-forested $q$-choosable if for a given list of $q$ colors associated with each vertex $v$, there exists a $k$-forested coloring of $G$ such that each vertex receives a color from its own list. In this paper, we prove that the $k$-forested choosability of a graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq k\geq 4$ is at most $\lceil\fracΔ{k-1}\rceil+1$, $\lceil\fracΔ{k-1}\rceil+2$ or $\lceil\fracΔ{k-1}\rceil+3$ if its maximum avera…
We study the curvature-dimension inequality in regular graphs. We develop techniques for calculating the curvature of such graphs, and we give characterizations of classes of graphs with positive, zero, and negative curvature. Our main result is to compare the curvature-dimension inequality in these classes to the so-called Ollivier curvature. A consequence of our results is that in the case that the graph contains no subgraph isomorphic to either $K_3$ or $K_{2,3}$ these curvatures usually have the same sign, and we characterize the exceptions.
The graph isomorphism problem is a main problem which has numerous applications in different fields. Thus, finding an efficient and easy to implement method to discriminate non-isomorphic graphs is valuable. In this paper, a new method is introduced which is very simple and easy to implement, but very efficient in discriminating non-isomorphic graphs, in practice. This method does not need any heuristic attempt and based on the eigenvalues of a new matrix representation for graphs. It, almost always, separates non-isomorphic $n$-vertex graphs in time $O(n^3)$ and in worst cases such as strongl…
A graph is called 1-planar if it can be drawn on the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we establish a local property of 1-planar graphs which describes the structure in the neighborhood of small vertices (i.e. vertices of degree no more than seven). Meanwhile, some new classes of light graphs in 1-planar graphs with the bounded degree are found. Therefore, two open problems presented by Fabrici and Madaras [The structure of 1-planar graphs, Discrete Mathematics, 307, (2007), 854-865] are solved. Furthermore, we prove that each 1-planar graph $G$ with …
Using generating functions, we enumerate regular semisimple conjugacy classes in the finite classical groups. For the general linear, unitary, and symplectic groups this gives a different approach to known results; for the special orthogonal groups the results are new.
Strongly refining results by Regev, Regev and Zeilberger, we prove surprising coincidences between characters to 2-part partitions of size n and characters to hooks of size n+2 on two related families obtained by extending 2-regular conjugacy classes.
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph, and for each $e \in E(G)$, let $L_e$ be a list of real numbers. Let $w:E(G) \to \cup_{e \in E(G)}L_e$ be an edge weighting function such that $w(e) \in L_e$ for each $e \in E(G)$, and let $c_w$ be the vertex colouring obtained by $c_w(v) = \sum_{e \ni v}w(e)$. We desire the smallest possible $k$ such that, for any choice of $\{L_e \,|\, e \in E(G)\}$ where $|L_e| \geq k$ for all $e \in E(G)$, there exists an edge weighting function $w$ for which $c_w$ is proper. The smallest such value of $k$ is the weight choosability number of $G$. This colouring problem, introduc…
We develop a theory of k-partitions of the set of infinite words recognizable by classes of finite automata. The theory enables to complete proofs of existing results about topological classifications of the (aperiodic) omega-regular k-partitions and provides tools for dealing with other similar questions. In particular, we characterize the structure of Wadge degrees of (aperiodic) omega-regular $k$-partitions, prove the decidability of many related problems, and discuss their complexity.
The symplectic graph Sp(2d, q) is the collinearity graph of the symplectic space of dimension 2d over a finite field of order q. A k-regular graph on v vertices is a divisible design graph with parameters (v, k, lambda_1, lambda_2 ,m,n) if its vertex set can be partitioned into m classes of size n, such that any two different vertices from the same class have lambda_1 common neighbours, and any two vertices from different classes have lambda_2 common neighbours whenever it is not complete or edgeless. In this paper we propose a new construction of strongly regular graphs with the parameters of…
Rectangular designs are classified as regular, Latin regular, semiregular, Latin semiregular and singular designs. Some series of selfdual as well as alpharesolvable designs are obtained using matrix approaches which belong to the above classes. In every construction we obtain a matrix N whose blocks are square (0,1) matrices such that N becomes the incidence matrix of a rectangular design. The method is the reverse of the well known tactical decomposition of the incidence matrix of a known design. Authors have already obtained some series of Group Divisible and Latin square designs using this…

Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are a family of subvarieties of the flag variety that arise in number theory, numerical analysis, representation theory, algebraic geometry, and combinatorics. We give a "Giambelli formula" expressing the classes of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in terms of Chern classes. In fact, we show that the cohomology class of each regular semisimple Hessenberg variety is the specialization of a certain double Schubert polynomial, giving a natural geometric interpretation to such specializations. We also decompose such classes in terms of the Schubert ba…
In this article a technique for constructing $p$-ary bent functions from near-bent functions is presented. Two classes of quadratic $p$-ary functions are shown to be near-bent. Applying the construction of bent functions to these classes of near-bent functions yields classes of non-quadratic bent functions. We show that one construction in even dimension yields weakly regular bent functions. For other constructions, we obtain both weakly regular and non-weakly regular bent functions. In particular we present the first known infinite class of non-weakly regular bent functions.
Characterizations graphs of some classes to induce periodic Grover walks have been studied for recent years. In particular, for the strongly regular graphs, it has been known that there are only three kinds of such graphs. Here, we focus on the periodicity of the Grover walks on distance-regular graphs. The distance-regular graph can be regarded as a kind of generalization of the strongly regular graphs and the typical graph with an equitable partition. In this paper, we find some classes of such distance-regular graphs and obtain some useful necessary conditions to induce periodic Grover walk…
We investigate a degree preserving variant of the $Δ$-Y transformation which replaces a triangle with a new 6-valent vertex which has double edges to the vertices that had been in the triangle. This operation is relevant for understanding scalar Feynman integrals in 6 dimensions. We study the structure of equivalence classes under this operation and its inverse, with particular attention to when the equivalence classes are finite, when they contain simple 6-regular graphs, and when they contain doubled 3-regular graphs. The last of these, in particular, is relevant for the Feynman integral cal…
Szemeredi's Regularity Lemma is a very useful tool of extremal combinatorics. Recently, several refinements of this seminal result were obtained for special, more structured classes of graphs. We survey these results in their rich combinatorial context. In particular, we stress the link to the theory of (structural) sparsity, which leads to alternative proofs, refinements and solutions of open problems. It is interesting to note that many of these classes present challenging problems. Nevertheless, from the point of view of regularity lemma type statements, they appear as "gentle" classes.
For integers $k,t \geq 2$ and $1\leq r \leq t$ let $D_k(r,t;n)$ be the number of parts among all $k$-regular partitions (i.e., partitions of $n$ where all parts have multiplicity less than $k$) of $n$ that are congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. Using the circle method, we obtain the asymptotic \[ D_{k}(r,t;n) = \frac{3^{\frac{1}{4}}e^{π\sqrt{\frac{2Kn}{3}}}}{πt 2^{\frac{3}{4}}K^{\frac{1}{4}}n^{\frac{1}{4}}\sqrt{k}}\left(\log k + \left(\frac{3\sqrt{K}\log k}{8\sqrt{6}π} - \frac{tπ(k-1)K^{\frac{1}{2}}}{2\sqrt{6}}\left(\frac{r}{t}- \frac{1}{2}\right)\right)n^{-\frac{1}{2}} + O(n^{-1})\right), \] where …
