The flux pinning mechanism of NdO0.82F0.18FeAs superconductor made under high pressure, with a critical temperature, Tc, of 51 K, has been investigated in detail in this work. The field dependence of the magnetization and the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistivity were measured in fields up to 13 T. The field dependence of the critical current density, Jc(B), was analyzed within the collective pinning model. A crossover field, Bsb, from the single vortex to the small vortex bundle pinning regime was observed. The temperature dependence of Bsb(T) is in good agreement with the delta-l pinning mechanism, i.e., pinning associated with fluctuations in the charge-carrier mean free path, l. Analysis of resistive transition broadening revealed that thermally activated flux flow is found to be responsible for the resistivity contribution in the vicinity of Tc. The activation energy U0/kB is 2000 K in low fields and scales as B (-1/3) over a wide field range. Our results indicate that the NdO0.82F0.18FeAs has stronger intrinsic pinning than Bi-2212 and also stronger than MgB2 for H > 8 T.
Thermally activated flux flow and vortex glass transition of recently discovered SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ superconductor are studied in magnetic fields up to 9.0 T. The thermally activated energy is analyzed in two analytic methods, of which one is conventional and generally used, while the other is closer to the theoretical description. The thermally activated energy values determined from both methods are discussed and compared. In addition, several critical magnetic fields determined from resistivity measurements are presented and discussed.
The thermally activated vortex bundle flow over the directional-dependent energy barrier in type-II superconductors is investigated. The coherent oscillation frequency and the mean direction of the random collective pinning force of the vortex bundles are evaluated by applying the random walk theorem. The thermally activated vortex bundle flow velocity is obtained. The temperature- and field-dependent Hall and longitudinal resistivities induced by the bundle flow for type-II superconducting bulk materials and thin films are calculated. All the results are in agreement with the experiments.
Using a simple cellular automaton with stochastic rules we show the possible emergence of thermally activated avalanches (power law distributed) in type-II superconductors. Scaling relations between the exponents characterizing these distributions and those obtained from field driven experiments are derived and proved through simulations. It is also shown that the conditions for the appearance of these avalanches are independent of the pinning mechanism. The relevance of our simulations for recently reported experimental results is also outlined.
Thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) and flux flow Hall effect (FFHE) of Fe(Te,S) single crystal in the mixed state are studied in magnetic fields up to 35 T. Thermally activated energy (TAE) is analyzed using conventional Arrhenius relation and modified TAFF theory which is closer to experimental results. The results indicate that there is a crossover from single-vortex pinning region to collective creep pinning region with increasing magnetic field. The temperature dependence of TAE is different for H//ab and H//c. On the other hand, the analysis of FFHE in the mixed state indicates that the…
We have observed spontaneous fluxoid generation in thin-film rings of the amorphous superconductor Mo$_3$Si, cooled through the normal-superconducting transition, as a function of quench rate and externally applied magnetic field, using a variable sample temperature scanning SQUID microscope. Our results can be explained using a model of freezout of thermally activated fluxoids, mediated by the transport of bulk vortices across the ring walls. This mechanism is complementary to a mechanism proposed by Kibble and Zurek, which only relies on causality to produce a freezout of order parameter flu…
We present measurements of the temperature-dependent conductance for series arrays of small-capacitance SQUIDs. At low bias voltages, the arrays exhibit a strong Coulomb blockade, which we study in detail as a function of temperature and Josephson energy $E_J$. We find that the zero-bias conductance is well described by thermally activated charge transport with the activation energy on the order of $ΛE_C$, where $Λ$ is the charge screening length in the array and $E_C$ is the charging energy of a single SQUID.
The anomalous Hall effect in type-II conventional and high-Tc superconductors is investigated based on the proposed novel theory of the thermally activated motion of vortex bundles over a directional-dependent energy barrier. Our calculations demonstrate clearly that anomalous Hall effect is induced by the competition between the Magnus force and the random collective pinning force of the vortex bundle. The Hall as well as the longitudinal resistivity for constant temperature and constant applied magnetic field of type-II superconducting films and bulk materials are calculated. The reentry phe…
We analyse the thermally activated depinning of an elastic string (line tension $ε$) governed by Hall dynamics from a columnar defect modelled as a cylindrical potential well of depth $V_{0}$ for the case of a small external force $F.$ An effective 1D field Hamiltonian is derived in order to describe the 2D string motion. At high temperatures the decay rate is proportional to $F^{{5}/{2}}T^{-{1}/{2}} \exp{\left [{F_{0}}/{F}-{U(F)}/{T}\right ]},$ with $F_{0}$ a constant of order of the critical force and $U(F) \sim{\left ({εV_{0}})}^{{1}/{2}}{V_{0}/{F}}$ the activation energy. The results are a…
We present critical fields, thermally-activated flux flow (TAFF) and critical current density of tetragonal phase beta-FeSe single crystals. The upper critical fields Hc2(T) for H||(101) and H\bot(101) are nearly isotropic and are likely governed by Pauli limiting process. The obtained large Ginzburg-Landau parameter k \sim 72.3(2) indicates that beta-FeSe is a type-II superconductor with smaller penetration depth than in Fe(Te,Se). The resistivity below Tc follows Arrhenius TAFF behavior. For both field directions below 30 kOe single vortex pinning is dominant whereas collective creep becomes…
We report magneto-transport measurements on a superconducting molybdenum-germanium (MoGe) film of thickness $d$=50 nm in parallel magnetic fields and show evidence of a transition from a Meissner state to a resistive state of spontaneous perpendicular vortices generated by thermal fluctuations above a certain temperature $T>T_v(B)$. Here $T_v$ appears to match the vortex core explosion condition $d\approx 4.4ξ(T_v)$, where $ξ$ is the coherence length. For $T>T_v$, we observed that a nonlinear current-voltage ($IV$) response (Ohmic at low currents and the power law $V\propto I^β$ at higher $I$)…
The anomalous Hall effect for type-II conventional and high-Tc superconductors is studied based upon the theory of thermally activated motion of vortex bundles jumping over the directional-dependent energy barrier. It is shown that the Hall anomaly is universal for type-II conventional and high-Tc superconductors as well as for superconducting bulk materials and thin films, provided certain conditions are satisfied. We find that the directional-dependent potential barrier of the vortex bundles renormalizes the Hall and longitudinal resistivities, and Hall anomaly for superconductors is induced…
We performed systematic AC susceptibility and magnetic moment measurements to investigate the vortex dynamics and pinning in the $EuRbFe_4As_4$ single crystal as a function of temperature, frequency, and DC magnetic field. The vortex solid-liquid line was determined and it fits well with $H(T_p)=H_0(1-t_p)^β$ using $β$=1.74-1.91, for $H\parallel ab$. It indicates a rather high pinning strength of the vortex system. The activation energy $U_0$ was determined from thermally activated flux creep theory and reached 6700 K at low fields, suggesting strong vortex pinning. A field dependence of $U_0(…
We report the results from resistivity and magnetic measurements on polycrystalline Ce oxypnictide (CeFeAsO1-xFx) samples where x spans from 0.13 to 0.25. We find that the orbital limiting field is as high as 150 T and it systematically decreases with increasing doping. The Maki parameter is greater than one across the phase diagram and the large Maki parameter suggests that orbital and Pauli limiting effects contribute to the upper critical field. The broadening of the superconducting transition in the resistivity data was interpreted using the thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) model where…
We report the anisotropy of the upper critical fields mu0Hc2(T) and thermally-activated flux flow (TAFF) behavior of quenched KxFe2-ySe2. Even though the post-annealing and quenching process enhances the superconducting volume fraction, it has a minor effect on the upper critical fields for H//c and H//ab. Analysis of the angular-dependence of resistivity rho_ab(theta,H) indicates that it follows the scaling law based on the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory and the anisotropy Gamma(T) increases with decreasing temperature with Gamma(T) ~ 3.6 at 27 K. The resistivity of quenched sample e…
Thermally-activated flux flow (TAFF) resistivity above the irreversibility field is reported for two different c-axis textured MgB_2 superconducting films. Transport measurements at different perpendicular magnetic fields 0 < B < 9 T and temperatures from 5 to 40K reveal TAFF Ohmic resistivity described by the Arrhenius law with the quadratic field dependence of the activation energy. Our transport measurements on bulk MgB_2 ceramic samples also show the TAFF behavior, but do not show the quadratic field dependence of U(T,B). We explain our results in terms of thermally-activated drift of pre-…
In this paper, we report the synthesis, structure, transition temperature, upper critical field, critical current density and thermally activated flux flow in CaFFe0.9Co0.1As superconductor. Superconductivity arises at 23 K by Co substitution at the site of Fe atoms and upper critical field is estimated 102 T by using the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg formula. The flux-flow activation energy (U0/kB) varies from 3230 K and 4190 K in the field of 1 T and 9 T respectively. At 2K, the Jc is found to be approximately 4x10^3A/cm^2 and 0.3x10^3 A/cm&^2 in zero and 6T field, respectively. Transmission e…
We study the temperature dependence of the resistivity as a function of magnetic field in superconducting transition (Tconset - TcR=0) region for different Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ superconducting samples being synthesized using sol-gel method. The superconducting transition temperature (TcR=0) of the studied samples is increased from 32 K to 82K by simply increasing the final sintering temperature with an improved grains morphology. On the other hand, broadening of transition is increased substantially with decrease in sintering temperature; this is because Tconset is not affected much with grains mor…
We theoretically study thermally-activated phase slips in superfluid spin transport in easy-plane magnetic wires within the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert phenomenology, which runs parallel to the Langer-Ambegaokar-McCumber-Halperin theory for thermal resistances in superconducting wires. To that end, we start by obtaining the exact solutions for free-energy minima and saddle points. We provide an analytical expression for the phase-slip rate in the zero spin-current limit, which involves detailed analysis of spin fluctuations at extrema of the free energy. An experimental setup of a magne…
The field dependence of flux pinning potential, U0, for under-doped, optimally doped and over-doped Ba(Fe,Co)2As2 single crystals has been investigated. U0 is determined using the Thermally Activated Flux Flow (TAFF) model, for both H || ab and H || c configurations. The observed power law dependencies of U0 versus H suggest that for fields upto 12 T for H || ab and 7 T for H || c, individual flux pinning, and for fields beyond 7 T for H || c, collective pinning becomes operative. A comparison of U0 for the Ba(Fe,Co)2As2 system with some other superconductors is presented
The origin of the resistive transition broadening for MgB2 thin films was investigated. Thermally activated flux flow is found to be responsible for the resistivity contribution in the vicinity of Tc. The origin of the observed extraordinary strong magnetic field dependence of the activation energy of the flux motion is discussed.
We investigated the superconducting transition and the pinning properties of undoped and Ag-doped FeSe0.94 at magnetic fields up to 14 T. It was established that due to Ag addition the hexagonal phase formation in melted FeSe0.94 samples is suppressed and the grain connectivity is strongly improved. The obtained superconducting zero-field transition becomes sharp (with a transition width below 1 K), Tc and the upper critical field were found to increase, whereas the normal state resistivity significantly reduces becoming comparable with those of FeSe single crystals. In addition, a considerabl…
We present results from an extensive study of fluctuation phenomena in superconducting nanowires made from sputtered NbN. Nanoscale wires were fabricated in form of a meander and operated at a constant temperature T~0.4Tc(0). The superconducting state is driven close to the electronic phase transition by a high bias current near the critical one. Fluctuations of sufficient strength temporarily drive a section of the meander structure into the normal conducting state, which can be registered as a voltage pulse of nanosecond duration. We considered three different models (vortex-antivortex pairs…
The upper critical field $μ_0H_{c2}(T_c)$ of Tl$_{0.58}$Rb$_{0.42}$Fe$_{1.72}$Se$_2$ single crystals has been determined by means of measuring the electrical resistivity in both a pulsed magnetic field ($\sim$60T) and a DC magnetic field ($\sim$14T). It is found that $H_{c2}$ linearly increases with decreasing temperature for $\textbf{H}$$\parallel$$c$, reaching $μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\parallel c}(0\textrm{K})\simeq60$ T. On the other hand, a larger $μ_0H_{c2}(0\textrm{K})$ with a strong convex curvature is observed for $\textbf{H}$$\perp$$c$ ($μ_0H_{c2}^{\textbf{H}\perp c}$(18K)$\simeq$60T). T…
We investigate the insulating phase that forms in a titanium nitride film in a close vicinity of the disorder-driven superconductor-insulator transition. In zero magnetic field the temperature dependence of the resistance reveals a sequence of distinct regimes upon decreasing temperature crossing over from logarithmic to activated behavior with the variable-range hopping squeezing in between. In perpendicular magnetic fields below 2 T, the thermally activated regime retains at intermediate temperatures, whereas at ultralow temperatures, the resistance increases faster than that of the thermall…
Starting from the effective low energy theory of a doped Mott insulator, we show that the effective carrier density in the underdoped regime agrees with a two - fluid description. Namely, it has distinct temperature independent and thermally activated components. We identify the thermally activated component as the bound state of a hole and a charge 2e boson, which occurs naturally in the effective theory. The thermally activated unbinding of this state leads to the strange metal and subsequent $T-$linear resistivity. We find that the doping dependence of the binding energy is in excellent agr…
The linear dynamic response of the two-dimensional (2D) vortex medium in ultrathin YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films was studied by measuring their ac sheet impedance Z over a broad range of frequencies ω. With decreasing temperature the dissipative component of Z exhibits, at a temperature T*(ω) well above the melting temperature of a 2D vortex crystal, a crossover from a thermally activated regime involving single vortices to a regime where the response has features consistent with a description in terms of a collectively pinned vortex manifold. This suggests the idea of a vortex liquid which, below T*(ω),…
We present measurements of the resistivity and the upper critical field H_c2 of Nd(O_0.7F_0.3)FeAs single crystals in strong DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 T and 60 T, respectively. We found that the field scale of H_c2 is comparable to ~100 T of high T_c cuprates. H_c2(T) parallel to the c-axis exhibits a pronounced upward curvature similar to what was extracted from earlier measurements on polycrystalline samples. Thus this behavior is indeed an intrinsic feature of oxypnictides, rather than manifestation of vortex lattice melting or granularity. The orientational dependence of H_c2 …
We study thermal effects on pinning and creep in type-II superconductors where vortices interact with a low density $n_p$ of strong point-like defects with pinning energy $e_p$ and extension $ξ$, the vortex core size. Defects are classified as strong if the interaction between a single pin and an individual vortex leads to the appearance of bistable solutions describing pinned and free vortex configurations. Extending the strong pinning theory to account for thermal fluctuations, we provide a quantitative analysis of vortex depinning and creep. We determine the thermally activated transitions …
