We study the relation between the internal structure of early-type galaxies and their environment using 70 strong gravitational lenses from the Sloan ACS Lens Survey. The Sloan database is used to determine two measures of overdensity of galaxies around each lens: the projected number density of galaxies inside the tenth nearest neighbor (Σ_{10}) and within a cone of radius one h^{-1} Mpc (D_1). Our main results are: 1) The average overdensity is somewhat larger than unity, consistent with lenses preferring overdense environments as expected for massive early-type galaxies (12/70 lenses are in known groups/clusters). 2) The distribution of overdensities is indistinguishable from that of "twin" non-lens galaxies selected from SDSS to have the same redshift and stellar velocity dispersion σ_*. Thus, within our errors, lens galaxies are an unbiased population, and the SLACS results can be generalized to the overall population of early-type galaxies. 3) Typical contributions from external mass distribution are no more than a few per cent, reaching 10-20% (~0.05-0.10 external convergence) only in the most extreme overdensities. 4) No significant correlation between overdensity and slope of the mass density profile of the lens is found. 5) Satellite galaxies (those with a more luminous companion) have marginally steeper mass density profiles than central galaxies (those without). This result suggests that tidal stripping may affect the mass structure of early-type galaxies down to kpc scales probed by strong lensing, when they fall into larger structures [ABRIDGED].
We present the definitive data for the full sample of 131 strong gravitational lens candidates observed with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope by the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. All targets were selected for higher-redshift emission lines and lower-redshift continuum in a single Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectrum. The foreground galaxies are primarily of early-type morphology, with redshifts from approximately 0.05 to 0.5 and velocity dispersions from 160 km/s to 400 km/s; the faint background emission-line galaxies have redshifts ranging from abo…
We present a weak gravitational lensing analysis of 22 early-type strong lens galaxies, based on deep HST images obtained as part of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey. Using the most advanced techniques to control systematic uncertainties related to the variable PSF and charge transfer efficiency of the ACS, we detect weak lensing signal out to 300 kpc/h. We analyze blank control fields from the COSMOS survey in the same manner, inferring that the residual systematic uncertainty in the tangential shear is <0.3%. A joint strong and weak lensing analysis shows that the average total mass density profile…
(Abridged) The ACS Virgo Cluster Survey is an HST program to obtain high-resolution, g and z-band images for 100 early-type members of the Virgo Cluster, spanning a range of ~460 in blue luminosity. Based on this large, homogeneous dataset, we present a sharp upward revision in the frequency of nucleation in early-type galaxies brighter than M_B ~ -15 (66 < f_n < 82%), and find no evidence for nucleated dwarfs to be more concentrated to the center of Virgo than their non-nucleated counterparts. Resolved stellar nuclei are not present in galaxies brighter than M_B ~ -20.5, however, there is no …
We report the discovery of two concentric Einstein rings around the gravitational lens SDSSJ0946+1006, as part of the Sloan Lens ACS Survey. The main lens is at redshift zl=0.222, while the inner ring (1) is at zs1=0.609 and Einstein radius $Re_1=1.43\pm0.01"$. The wider image separation ($Re_2=2.07\pm 0.02"$) of the outer ring (2) implies that it is at higher redshift. Its detection in the F814W filter implies zs2<6.9. The configuration can be well described by a total density profile $ρ_{tot} ~ r^-g'$ with $g'=2.00\pm0.03$ and velocity dispersion $σ_{SIE}=287\pm5\kms$. [...] We consider whet…
(Abridged) We present a joint gravitational lensing and stellar dynamical analysis of fifteen massive field early-type galaxies, selected from the Sloan Lens (SLACS) Survey. The following numerical results are found: (i) A joint-likelihood gives an average logarithmic density slope for the total mass density of 2.01 (+0.02/-0.03) (68 perecnt C.L). inside the Einstein radius. (ii) The average position-angle difference between the light distribution and the total mass distribution is found to be 0+-3 degrees, setting an upper limit of <= 0.035 on the average external shear. (iii) The average pro…
The Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey is an efficient Hubble Space Telescope Snapshot imaging survey for new galaxy-scale strong gravitational lenses. The targeted lens candidates are selected spectroscopically from within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) database of galaxy spectra for having multiple nebular emission lines at a redshift significantly higher than that of the SDSS target galaxy. In this paper, we present a catalog of 19 newly discovered gravitational lenses, along with 9 other observed candidate systems that are either possible lenses, non-lenses, or non-detections. The survey e…
We derive Fundamental Plane parameters of 15 early-type lens galaxies identified by the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. The size of the sample allows us to investigate for the first time the distribution of lens galaxies in the FP space. After correcting for evolution, we find that lens galaxies occupy a subset of the local FP. The edge-on projection (approximately M vs M/L) is indistinguishable from that of normal early-type galaxies. However -- within the fundamental plane -- the lens galaxies appear to concentrate at the edge of the region populated by normal early-type galaxies. We show tha…
We use a sample of 53 massive early-type strong gravitational lens galaxies with well-measured redshifts (ranging from z=0.06 to 0.36) and stellar velocity dispersions (between 175 and 400 km/s) from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey to derive numerous empirical scaling relations. The ratio between central stellar velocity dispersion and isothermal lens-model velocity dispersion is nearly unity within errors. The SLACS lenses define a fundamental plane (FP) that is consistent with the FP of the general population of early-type galaxies. We measure the relationship between strong-lensing mass M…
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope ACS and NICMOS images of six bright Lyman-break galaxy candidates that were previously discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that five of the objects are consistent with unresolved point sources. Although somewhat atypical of the class, they are most likely LoBAL quasars, perhaps FeLoBALs. The sixth object, J1147, has a faint companion galaxy located ~0.8 arcsec to the southwest. The companion contributes ~8% of the flux in the observed-frame optical and infrared. It is unknown whether this companion is located at the same redshift as J1147.
The combination of two-dimensional kinematics and gravitational lens modelling permits detailed reconstruction of the phase-space structure of early-type galaxies and sets constraints on the dark-matter distribution in their inner regions. We describe a project which combines integral-field spectroscopy from an ESO Large Programme using VIMOS on the VLT with deep HST ACS and NICMOS images to study a sample of 17 early-type lens galaxies at redshifts between 0.1 and 0.3, drawn from the Sloan Lens ACS survey (SLACS).
The Virgo Cluster is the dominant mass concentration in the Local Supercluster and the largest collection of elliptical and lenticular galaxies in the nearby universe. In this paper, we present an introduction to the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey: a program to image, in the F475W and F850LP bandpasses (Sloan g and z), 100 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. We describe the selection of the program galaxies and their ensemble properties, the choice of filters, the field placement and orientation, the limiting magnitudes of the…
We combine strong-lensing masses with SDSS stellar velocity dispersions and HST-ACS effective (half-light) radii for 36 lens galaxies from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey to study the mass dependence of mass-dynamical structure in early-type galaxies. We find that over a 180--390 km/s range in velocity dispersion, structure is independent of lensing mass to within 5%. This result suggests a systematic variation in the total (i.e., luminous plus dark matter) mass-to-light ratio as the origin of the tilt of the fundamental plane (FP) scaling relationship between galaxy size, velocity dispersio…
Strong gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics provide two complementary and orthogonal constraints on the density profiles of galaxies. Based on spherically symmetric, scale-free, mass models, it is shown that the combination of both techniques is powerful in breaking the mass-sheet and mass-anisotropy degeneracies. Second, observational results are presented from the Lenses Structure & Dynamics (LSD) Survey and the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey collaborations to illustrate this new methodology in constraining the dark and stellar density profiles, and mass structure, of early-type galaxie…
(Abridged) We present a detailed analysis of the morphology, isophotal parameters and surface brightness profiles for 100 early-type members of the Virgo Cluster, from dwarfs (M_B = -15.1 mag) to giants (M_B = -21.8 mag). Each galaxy has been imaged in two filters, closely resembling the Sloan g and z passbands, using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust and complex morphological structures are common, with kiloparsec-scale stellar disks, bars, and nuclear stellar disks seen in 60% of galaxies with intermediate luminosity (-20 < M_B < -17), and dust seen in…
We readdress the calculation of the mass of early-type galaxies using strong gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics. Our sample comprises 27 galaxies in the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. Comparing the mass estimates from these two independent methods in a Bayesian framework, we find evidence of significant line-of-sight mass contamination. Assuming a power-law mass distribution, the best fit density profile is given by $ρ\propto r^{-1.69\pm0.05}$. We show that neglecting the line-of-sight mass contamination produces an overestimate of the mass attributed to the lens-galaxy by the lensing …
We present a spatially resolved comparison of the stellar-mass and total-mass surface distributions of nine early-type galaxies. The galaxies are a subset of the Sloan Lens ACS survey (or SLACS; Bolton et al. 2006). The total-mass distributions are obtained by exploring pixelated mass models that reproduce the lensed images. The stellar-mass distributions are derived from population synthesis models fit to the photometry of the lensing galaxies. Uncertainties - mainly model degeneracies - are also computed. Stars can account for all the mass in the inner regions. A Salpeter IMF actually gives …
We present the first results of a combined VLT VIMOS integral-field unit and Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/ACS study of the early-type lens galaxy SDSS J2321-097 at z=0.0819, extending kinematic studies to a look-back time of 1 Gyr. This system, discovered in the Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS), has been observed as part of a VLT Large Programme with the goal of obtaining two-dimensional stellar kinematics of 17 early-type galaxies to z~0.35 and Keck spectroscopy of an additional dozen lens systems. Bayesian modelling of both the surface brightness distribution of the lensed source and the two-di…
We study the colors, structural properties, and star formation histories of a sample of ~1600 dwarfs over look-back times of ~3 Gyr (z=0.002-0.25). The sample consists of 401 distant dwarfs drawn from the Galaxy Evolution from Morphologies and SEDs (GEMS) survey, which provides high resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images and accurate redshifts, and of 1291 dwarfs at 10-90 Mpc compiled from the Sloan Digitized Sky Survey (SDSS). We find that the GEMS dwarfs are bluer than the SDSS dwarfs, which is consistent with star formation histories involving starb…
We constrain the post-Newtonian gravity parameter gamma on kiloparsec scales by comparing the masses of 15 elliptical lensing galaxies from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey as determined in two independent ways. The first method assumes only that Newtonian gravity is correct and is independent of gamma, while the second uses gravitational lensing which depends on gamma. More specifically, we combine Einstein radii and radial surface-brightness gradient measurements of the lens galaxies with empirical distributions for the mass concentration and velocity anisotropy of elliptical galaxies in the local …
Spectroscopic galaxy-galaxy lens searches are presently the most prolific method of identifying strong lens systems in large data sets. We study the probabilities associated with these lens searches, namely the probability of identifying a candidate with rogue [OII] emission lines in a galaxy's spectrum, and the probability that the candidate will show features of strong lensing in follow-up photometric observations. We include selection effects unique to spectroscopic data, and apply them to the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) survey (Bolton et al. 2006). The most significant selection effect is the f…
In this paper we compare two different diagnostics for estimating stellar masses in early-type galaxies and we establish their level of reliability. In particular, we consider the well-studied sample of 15 field elliptical galaxies selected from the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey (z = 0.06-0.33). We examine here the correlation between the stellar mass values, enclosed inside the Einstein radius of each lens, based on analyses of lensing and stellar dynamics combined and based on multiwavelength photometry spectral template fitting. The lensing+dynamics stellar mass is obtained from the publish…
We present a sample of $i_{775}$-dropout candidates identified in five Hubble Advanced Camera for Surveys fields centered on Sloan Digital Sky Survey QSOs at redshift $z\sim 6$. Our fields are as deep as the Great Observatory Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) ACS images which are used as a reference field sample. We find them to be overdense in two fields, underdense in two fields, and as dense as the average density of GOODS in one field. The two excess fields show significantly different color distributions from that of GOODS at the 99% confidence level, strengthening the idea that the excess obje…
We show how the combination of observations related to strong gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics in ellipticals offers a new way to measure the cosmological matter and dark-energy density parameters. A gravitational lensing estimate of the mass enclosed inside the Einstein circle can be obtained by measuring the Einstein angle, once the critical density of the system is known. A model-dependent dynamical estimate of this mass can also be obtained by measuring the central velocity dispersion of the stellar component. By assuming the well-tested homologous 1/r^{2} profile for the total d…
Gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics provide two complementary, nearly orthogonal, constraints on the mass distribution of early-type lens galaxies. This allows the luminous and dark-matter distribution in higher-redshift (z>0.1) galaxies to be studied beyond the limitations of each individual method. Two surveys have been initiated to compile a large sample of early-type galaxies suitable to lensing and dynamical studies: (1) The Lenses Structure & Dynamics (LSD) Survey and (2) the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS) Survey. Using spherically symmetric mass models, I illustrated how lensing and dyna…
Bright galaxy-galaxy strong lenses are much more powerful than lensed quasars for measuring the mass profiles of galaxies, but until this year only a handful have been known. Here we present five new examples, identified via the optimal line-of-sight gravitational lens search strategy applied to luminous red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our survey largely complements a similar survey by Bolton et al., who recently presented several new lenses. The lensed background galaxies are selected from the SDSS spectra via the presence of narrow emission line signatures, including the…
