We give detailed description of the transport spin current in the chiral helimagnet. Under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis, the magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) is formed. Once the kink crystal begins to move under the Galilean boost, the spin-density accumulation occurs inside each kink and there emerges periodic arrays of the induced magnetic dipoles carrying the transport spin current. The coherent motion of the kink crystal dynamically generates the spontaneous demagnetization field. This mechanism is analogous to the Döring-Becker-Kittel mechanism of the domain wall motion in ferromagnets. To describe the kink crystal motion, we took account of not only the tangential $ϕ$-fluctuations but the longitudinal $θ$-fluctuations around the helimagnetic configuration. Based on the collective coordinate method and the Dirac's canonical formulation for the singular Lagrangian system, we derived the closed formulae for the mass, spin current and induced magnetic dipole moment accompanied with the kink crystal motion. To materialize the theoretical model presented here, symmetry-adapted material synthesis would be required, where the interplay of crystallographic and magnetic chirality plays a key role there.
We study magnetoelastic resonance phenomena in a mono-axial chiral helimagnet belonging to hexagonal crystal class. By computing the spectrum of coupled elastic wave and spin wave, it is demonstrated how hybridization occurs depending on their chirality. Specific features of the magnetoelastic resonance are discussed for the conical phase and the soliton lattice phase stabilized in the mono-axial chiral helimagnet. The former phase exhibits appreciable non-reciprocity of the spectrum, the latter is characterized by a multi-resonance behavior. We propose that the non-reciprocal spin wave around…
We show that the bulk transport magnetic current is generated by the moving magnetic kink crystal (chiral soliton lattice) formed in the chiral helimagnet under the static magnetic field applied perpendicular to the helical axis. The current is caused by the non-equilibrium transport momentum with the kink mass being determined by the spin fluctuations around the kink crystal state. An emergence of the transport magnetic currents is then a consequence of the dynamical off-diagonal long range order along the helical axis. We derive an explicit formula for the inertial mass of the kink crystal a…
Monoaxial chiral magnets can form a noncollinear twisted spin structure called the chiral helimagnetic state. We study magnetic properties of such a chiral helimagnetic state, with emphasis on the effect of itinerant electrons. Modeling a monoaxial chiral helimagnet by a one-dimensional Kondo lattice model with the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction, we perform a variational calculation to elucidate the stable spin configuration in the ground state. We obtain a chiral helimagnetic state as a candidate for the ground state, whose helical pitch is modulated by the model parameters: the Kondo cou…
The chiral helimagnet, $Cr_{1/3}NbS_{2}$, hosts exotic spin textures, whose influence on the magneto-transport properties, make this material an ideal candidate for future spintronic applications. To date, the interplay between macroscopic magnetic and transport degrees of freedom is believed to result from a reduction in carrier scattering following spin order. Here, we present electronic structure measurements through the helimagnetic transition temperature, $T_{C}$ that challenges this view by showing a Fermi surface comprised of strongly hybridized Nb- and Cr- derived electronic states, an…
We demonstrated that the chiral soliton lattice formed out of a chiral helimagnet exhibits coherent sliding motion by applying a time-dependent magnetic field parallel to the helical axis, in addition to a static field perpendicular to the helical axis. To describe the coherent sliding, we use the collective coordinate method and numerical analysis. We also show that the time-dependent sliding velocity causes a time-varying Berry cap which causes the spin-motive-force. A salient feature of the chiral soliton lattice is appearance of the strongly amplified spin motive force which is directly pr…
Motivated by the spin current problem in chiral helimagnet, we rigorously elucidated the hidden Galilean invariance in the chiral XY model under the magnetic field. The Lie group analysis is applied to the differential equations of the continuum theory of the chiral helimagnet with the parity-violating Dzyaloshinskii-Morya coupling under a transversal magnetic field. Lie point symmetries and the invariant solutions under these symmetries are found. They present sliding solutions that come up as a consequence of breaking of both spin rotational symmetry by the external magnetic field and a pari…
It is suggested that marked features of symmetry breaking mechanism and elementary excitations in chiral helimagnet come up as visible effects in electron spin resonance (ESR) profile. Under the magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis, elementary excitations are respectively described by the helimagnon associated with rotational symmetry breaking and the magnetic kink crystal phonon associated with translational symmetry breaking. We demonstrate how the ESR spectra distinguish these excitations.
We investigate the static and ultrafast magneto-optical response of the hexagonal chiral helimagnet $Cr_{1/3}NbS_{2}$ above and below the helimagnetic ordering temperature. The presence of a magnetic easy plane contained within the crystallographic ab-plane is confirmed, while degenerate optical pump-probe experiments reveal significant differences in the dynamic between the parent, $NbS_{2}$, and Cr-intercalated compounds. Time resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements show a two-step demagnetization process, where an initial, sub-ps relaxation and subsequent buildup ($τ> 50$ ps) in t…
We show the existence of an isolated soliton excitation over the topological ground state configuration in chiral helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia exchange and the strong easy-plane anisotropy. The magnetic field perpendicular to the helical axis stabilizes the kink crystal state which plays a role of "topological protectorate" for the traveling soliton with a definite handedness. To find new soliton solution, we use the Bäcklund transformation technique. It is pointed out that the traveling soliton carries the magnon density and a magnetic solition transport may be realized.
Magnetic-field effect on the magnetic and electric properties in a chiral polar ordered corundum Ni$_2$InSbO$_6$ has been investigated. Single-crystal soft x-ray and neutron diffraction measurements confirm long-wavelength magnetic modulation. The modulation direction tends to align along the magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, suggesting that the nearly proper-screw type helicoid should be formed below 77\,K. The application of a high magnetic field causes a metamagnetic transition. In a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the polar axis, a helix-to-canted antiferromag…
We report on a topological Hall effect possibly induced by scalar spin chirality in a quasi-two- dimensional helimagnet Fe$_{1+x}$Sb. In the low-temperature region where the spins on interstitial- Fe (concentration $x=0.3$) intervening the $120^\circ$ spin-ordered triangular planes tend to freeze, a non-trivial component of Hall resistivity with opposite sign of the conventional anomalous Hall term is observed under magnetic field applied perpendicular to the triangular-lattice plane. The observed unconventional Hall effect is ascribed to the scalar spin chirality arising from the heptamer spi…

It is shown that a condensation transition involving a chiral order parameter can occur in itinerant helimagnets, in analogy to the transition between the isotropic phase and the phase known as blue fog or blue phase III in cholesteric liquid crystals. It is proposed that such a transition is the explanation for recent neutron scattering results in MnSi. Predictions are made that will allow to experimentally test this proposal.
Chiral solitons are one dimensional localized magnetic structures that are metastable in some ferromagnetic systems with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions and/or uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Though topological textures in general provide a very interesting playground for new spintronics phenomena, how to properly create and control single chiral solitons is still unclear. We show here that chiral solitons in monoaxial helimagnets, characterized by a uniaxial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, can be stabilized with external magnetic fields. Once created, the soliton moves steadily in respons…
We have reinvestigated the magnetic properties of the classical metallic helimagnet MnP by magnetization and neutron scattering experiments. Our neutron scattering results indicate that the previously reported magnetic structure in the low-temperature (LT) helimagnetic phase (T < 47K) should be modified to an alternately tilted helimagnetic structure pro- duced by the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction. In the intermediate temperature (IT) range between the LT helimagnetic phase and the high-temperature (HT) ferromagnetic phase along the c-axis, 47K < T < 282K, we have found a weak ferromagnetic…
We carry out Monte-Carlo simulations to discuss critical properties of a classical two-dimensional XY frustrated helimagnet on a square lattice. We find two successive phase transitions upon the temperature decreasing: the first one is associated with breaking of a discrete Z_2 symmetry and the second one is of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type at which the SO(2) symmetry breaks. Thus, a narrow region exists on the phase diagram between lines of the Ising and the BKT transitions that corresponds to a chiral spin liquid.
We report spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) and discuss the spin-flip scattering cross sections as well as the chiral fraction $η$ close to the helimagnetic transition in MnSi. For our study, we have developed a miniaturised SNP device that allows fast data collection when used in small angle scattering geometry with an area detector. Critical spin-flip scattering is found to be governed by chiral paramagnons that soften on a sphere in momentum space. Carefully accounting for the incoherent spin-flip background, we find that the resulting chiral fraction $η$ decreases gradually above the hel…
Ferroelectric properties in magnetic fields of varying magnitude and direction have been investigated for a triangular-lattice helimagnet CuFe1-xGaxO2 (x=0.035). The magnetoelectric phase diagrams were deduced for magnetic fields along [001], [110], and [1-10] direction, and the in-plane magnetic field was found to induce the rearrangement of six possible multiferroic domains. Upon every 60-degree rotation of in-plane magnetic field around the c-axis, unique 120-degree flop of electric polarization occurs as a result of the switch of helical magnetic q-vector. The chirality of spin helix is al…
We present the theory of nonlinear ac magnetic response for the highly nonlinear regime of the chiral soliton lattice. Increasing of the dc magnetic field perpendicularly to the chiral axis results in crossover inside the phase, when nearly isolated $2π$-kinks are partitioned by vast ferromagnetic domains. Assuming that each of the kink reacts independently from the other ones to the external ac field, we demonstrate that internal deformations of such a kink give rise to the nonlinear response.
The chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 has been investigated by magnetic, transport and thermal properties measurements on single crystals and by first principles electronic structure calculations. From the measured field and temperature dependence of the magnetization for fields applied perpendicular to the c axis, the magnetic phase diagram has been constructed in the vicinity of the phase transitions. A transition from a paramagnetic to a magnetically ordered phase occurs near 120 K. With increasing magnetic field and at temperatures below 120 K, this material undergoes transitions from a helimagn…
A helical spin texture is of great current interest for a host of novel spin-dependent transport phenomena. We report a rich variety of nontrivial, helimagnetic phases in the simple cubic perovskite SrFeO3 under magnetic fields up to 42 T. Magnetic and resistivity measurements revealed that the proper-screw spin phase proposed for SrFeO3 can be subdivided into at least five kinds of ordered phases. Near the multicritical point, an unconventional anomalous Hall effect was found to show up and was interpreted as due to a possible long-period noncoplanar spin texture with scalar spin chirality.
A three-dimensional chiral helimagnet is analyzed using a mean-field (MF) analysis and a classical Monte Carlo (MC) simulation at finite temperatures. We consider a Hamiltonian containing Heisenberg exchange and uni-axial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on a simple cubic lattice. Magnetization curves calculated by the MF theory are qualitatively consistent with those observed in experiments. A comparison between lattice and continuum models clarifies the region where the continuum approximation can be applied. By combining the MF theory with the classical MC method, it is also clarified tha…
We present a detailed study of the ground state phase diagram of the classical frustrated Heisenberg model on the face-centered-cubic lattice. By considering exchange interactions up till third nearest neighbors, we find commensurate, helimagnetic, as well as noncollinear multi-{\bf Q} orders which include noncoplanar and chiral spin structures. We reveal the presence of subextensively degenerate manifolds that appear at triple points and certain phase boundaries in the phase diagram. Within these manifolds, the spin Hamiltonian can be recast as a complete square of spins on finite motifs, per…
We performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements on the helimagnetic spinel compound ZnCr2Se4. The ground state of this material is a multi-domain spin-spiral phase, which undergoes domain selection in a magnetic field and reportedly exhibits a transition to a proposed spin-nematic phase at higher fields. We observed a continuous change in the magnetic structure as a function of field and temperature, as well as a weak discontinuous jump in the spiral pitch across the domain-selection transition upon increasing field. From our SANS results we have established the absence of any …

Complex low-temperature ordered states in chiral magnets are typically governed by a competition between multiple magnetic interactions. The chiral-lattice multiferroic Cu2OSeO3 became the first insulating helimagnetic material in which a long-range order of topologically stable spin vortices known as skyrmions was established. Here we employ state-of-the-art inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to comprehend the full three-dimensional spin excitation spectrum of Cu2OSeO3 over a broad range of energies. Distinct types of high- and low-energy dispersive magnon modes separated by an extensive ener…
Chiral magnetic interactions induce complex spin textures including helical and conical spin waves, as well as particle-like objects such as magnetic skyrmions and merons. These spin textures are the basis for innovative device paradigms and give rise to exotic topological phenomena, thus being of interest for both applied and fundamental sciences. Present key questions address the dynamics of the spin system and emergent topological defects. Here we analyze the micromagnetic dynamics in the helimagnetic phase of FeGe. By combining magnetic force microscopy, single-spin magnetometry, and Landa…
Phase transitions in a classical Heisenberg spin model of a chiral helimagnet with the Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya (DM) interaction in three dimensions are numerically studied. By using the event-chain Monte Carlo algorithm recently developed for particle and continuous spin systems, we perform equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations for large systems up to about $10^6$ spins. Without magnetic fields, the system undergoes a continuous phase transition with critical exponents of the three-dimensional \textit{XY} model, and a uniaxial periodic helical structure emerges in the low temperature region. In t…
Successive phase transitions in a rare-earth monoaxial chiral magnet DyNi$_3$Ga$_{9}$ have been investigated by resonant x-ray diffraction. Magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole degrees of freedom arising from the large angular moment of $J=15/2$, in combination with the symmetric and antisymmetric exchange interactions and the crystal field anisotropy, give rise to competing ordered phases. We show that the antiferromagnetically coupled Dy moments in the $ab$-plane form an incommensurate helimagnetic order with $q\sim(0, 0, 0.43)$ just below $T_{\text{N}}=10$ K, which further exhibits succe…
A direct three-dimensional minimization of the standard energy functional shows that in thin films of cubic helimagnets chiral skyrmions are modulated along three spatial directions. The structure of such 3D skyrmions can be thought of as a superposition of conical modulations along the skyrmion axis and double-twist rotation in the perpendicular plane. Numerical solutions for chiral modulations demonstrate that 3D skyrmion lattices and helicoids are thermodynamically stable in a broad range of applied magnetic fields. Our results disclose a basic physical mechanism underlying the formation of…
Multiple intriguing low temperature phenomena have recently been discovered in the family of chiral cubic Co-Zn-Mn compounds with $β-$Mn-type structure. In particular, Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ displays a reduction of the helical spiral pitch on cooling, along with lattice shape transformations of metastable skyrmions and the manifestation of peculiar magnetic textures due to strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Here we report on temperature-dependent measurements of helimagnon excitations in the field polarized regime Co$_8$Zn$_8$Mn$_4$ using the spin wave small-angle neutron scattering (SWSANS) te…
The tensile strain is a promising tool for creation and manipulation of magnetic solitonic textures in the chiral helimagnets via tunable control of magnetic anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, by using the in-situ resonant small-angle x-ray scattering we demonstrate that the skyrmion and chiral soliton lattices can be achieved as metastable states in FeGe lamella as distinct states or even simultaneously by combining the tensile strain and magnetic fields in various orientations with respect to the deformation. The small-angle scattering data are discussed in the frame of …
Helical magnetic structures and its responses to external magnetic fields in Yb(Ni$_x$Cu$_{1-x}$)$_3$Al$_9$, with a chiral crystal structure of the space group $R32$, have been investigated by resonant X-ray diffraction. It is shown that the crystal chirality is reflected to the helicity of the magnetic structure by a one to one relationship, indicating that there exists an antisymmetric exchange interaction mediated via the conduction electrons. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the helical axis ($c$ axis), the second harmonic peak of $(0, 0, 2q)$ develops with increasing the …
Chirality is breaking of mirror symmetry in matter. In the fields of biology and chemistry, this is particularly important because some of the essential molecules in life such as amino acids and DNA have chirality. It is a long-standing mystery how one of the enantiomers was chosen at the beginning stage of life. The understanding of the emergence of homochirality under some conditions is indispensable for the study of the origin of life as well as pharmaceutical science. The chirality is also emergent in magnetic structures. The longitudinal helical magnetic structure is the chiral object com…
Neutron scattering is used to study magnetic field induced ordering in the quasi-1D quantum spin-tube compound Sul--Cu$_2$Cl$_4$ that in zero field has a non-magnetic spin-liquid ground state. The experiments reveal an incommensurate chiral high-field phase stabilized by a geometric frustration of the magnetic interactions. The measured critical exponents $β\approx0.235$ and $ν\approx0.34$ at $H_c\approx3.7$ T point to an unusual sub-critical scaling regime and may reflect the chiral nature of the quantum critical point.
The zero temperature phase diagram of the mono-axial chiral helimagnet in the magnetic field plane formed by the components parallel and perpendicular to the helical axis is thoroughly analyzed. The nature of the transition to the commensurate state depends on the angle between the field and the helical axis. For field directions close to the directions parallel or perpendicular to the helical axis the transition is continuous, while for intermediate angles the transition is discontinuous and the incommensurate and commensurate states coexist on the transition line. The continuous and disconti…
Understanding the role of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) has been crucial to controlling magnetic anisotropy in magnetic multilayer films. It has been shown that electronic structure can be altered via interface SOC by varying the superlattice structure, resulting in spontaneous magnetization perpendicular or parallel to the plane. In lieu of magnetic thin films, we study the similarly anisotropic helimagnet Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$, where the spin polarization direction, controlled by the applied magnetic field, can modify the electronic structure. As a result, the direction of spin polarization can modu…
In this work, the magnetism of the single crystal Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$, which exhibits chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL) state, is investigated. The magnetization displays strong magnetic anisotropy when the field is applied perpendicularly and parallel to the $c$-axis in low field region ($H<H_{S}$, $H_{S}$ is the saturation field). The critical exponents of Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$ are obtained as $β=$ 0.370(4), $γ=$ 1.380(2), and $δ=$ 4.853(6), which are close to the theoretical prediction of three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Based on the scaling equation and the critical exponents, the $H-…
The effect of thermal fluctuations on the phase structure of monoaxial helimagnets with external magnetic field parallel to the chiral axis is analyzed by means of a saddle point expansion of the free energy. The phase transition that separates the conical and forced ferromagnetic phases is changed to first order by the thermal fluctuations. In a purely monoaxial system the pitch of the conical state remains independent of temperature and magnetic field, as in mean field theory, even when fluctuations are taken into account. However, in presence of weak Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in th…
In this letter we describe the ground-state magnetic structure of the highly anisotropic helimagnet Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ in a magnetic field. A Heisenberg spin model with Dyzaloshinkii-Moriya interactions and magne- tocrystalline anisotropy allows the ground state spin structure to be calculated for magnetic fields of arbitrary strength and direction. Comparison with magnetization measurements shows excellent agreement with the predicted spin structure.
In the light of recent results obtained for the prototype helimagnet MnSi we examine the possible magnetic structures of compounds of the same family, consistent with the crystal symmetries when the magnetic propagation vector is parallel to the [001] axis. The analysis of a published muon spin rotation spectrum recorded in MnGe [Phys. Rev. B 93, 174405 (2016)] shows no deviation from the canonical helimagnetic structure, unlike in MnSi. This qualitative difference calls for further theoretical works on chiral magnets.
Low-energy spin excitations in any long-range ordered magnetic system in the absence of magnetocrystalline anisotropy are gapless Goldstone modes emanating from the ordering wave vectors. In helimagnets, these modes hybridize into the so-called helimagnon excitations. Here we employ neutron spectroscopy supported by theoretical calculations to investigate the magnetic excitation spectrum of the isotropic Heisenberg helimagnet ZnCr2Se4 with a cubic spinel structure, in which spin-3/2 magnetic Cr3+ ions are arranged in a geometrically frustrated pyrochlore sublattice. Apart from the conventional…
Using a simple model of a frustrated helimagnet, the critical behavior is numerically investigated for planar or isotropic spins, and for cases of one or two chiral order parameters. The helical structure in this model arises from the competition between exchange interactions of spins of the first two range orders in one direction (in both directions) of a square lattice. The main result is that the critical and temperature behavior is primarily determined by topological defects that are present in all cases. In the case of planar spins, vortices, fractional vortices and domain walls are prese…
The skyrmion is a topologically stable spin texture, in which the spin direction wraps a sphere. The topological nature gives rise to emergent electromagnetic phenomena such as topological Hall effect. Recently, the crystallization of nanoscale skyrmions was observed in chiral helimagnets with use of the neutron diffraction and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. The skyrmions are quite mobile under electric current density as low as $\sim$ 10$^6$ A/m$^2$, and, in some cases, stable up to near room temperature. These features suggest that the skyrmions may work as a magnetic stable-varia…
The phase diagram of the monoaxial chiral helimagnet as a function of temperature (T ) and magnetic field with components perpendicular (H x ) and parallel (H z ) to the chiral axis is theoretically studied via the variational mean field approach in the continuum limit. A phase transition surface in the three dimensional thermodynamic space separates a chiral spatially modulated phase from a homogeneous forced ferromagnetic phase. The phase boundary is divided into three parts: two surfaces of second order transitions of instability and nucleation type, in De Gennes terminology, are separated …
The field dependence of the electron spin resonance in a helimagnet, LiCu_2O_2, was investigated for the first time. In the paramagnetic state a broad resonance line was observed corresponding to a g-factor of 2.3. In the critical regime around the paramagnetic to helimagnetic phase transition the resonance broadens and shifts to higher frequencies. A narrow signal is recovered at low temperature, corresponding to a spin gap of 1.5 meV in zero field. A comprehensive model of the magnons is presented, using exchange parameters from neutron scattering (T. Masuda et al, Phys. Rev. B 72, 014405), …
We report the experimental observation of longitudinal spin Seebeck effect in a multiferroic helimagnet Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22. Temperature gradient applied normal to Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22/Pt interface generates inverse spin Hall voltage of spin current origin in Pt, whose magnitude was found to be proportional to bulk magnetization of Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2Fe12O22 even through the successive magnetic transitions among various helimagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases. This finding demonstrates that the helimagnetic spin wave can be an effective carrier of spin current. By controlling the population ratio of …

Anisotropic low-temperature properties of the cubic spinel helimagnet ZnCr2Se4 in the single-domain spin-spiral state are investigated by a combination of neutron scattering, thermal conductivity, ultrasound velocity, and dilatometry measurements. In an applied magnetic field, neutron spectroscopy shows a complex and nonmonotonic evolution of the spin-wave spectrum across the quantum-critical point that separates the spin-spiral phase from the field-polarized ferromagnetic phase at high fields. A tiny spin gap of the pseudo-Goldstone magnon mode, observed at wave vectors that are structurally …
We have performed muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the chiral helimagnet Cr1/3NbS2 at zero to low magnetic field. The transition from the paramagnetic to helical magnetically ordered phase at zero field is marked by the onset of a coherent oscillation of the zero-field muon spin polarization below a critical temperature Tc. An enhancement of the muon spin precession frequency is observed below T ~ 50K, where anomalous behavior has been observed in bulk transport measurements. The enhanced precession frequency indicates a low-temperature modification of th…
