The electronic state in a CoO_2 plane of the layered cobalt oxides Na_{x}CoO_2 is investigated by using the 11 band d-p model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice, where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the LDA band structure. Effects of the Coulomb interaction at a Co site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J', are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We also consider the effect of the Na order at x=0.5, where Na ions form one dimensional chains, by taking into account of an effective one-dimensional potential Delta epsilon_{d} on the CoO_2 plane. It is found that the Na order enhances the Fermi surface nesting resulting in the antiferromagnetism (AFM) which is suppressed due to the frustration effect in the case without the Na order. When U and Delta epsilon_{d} are varied, we observe three types of the AFM: (1) the metallic AFM with large density of states N_F at the Fermi level for small values of U and Delta epsilon_{d}, (2) the semimetallic AFM with tiny N_F for large U with small Delta epsilon_{d} and (3) the insulating AFM with a finite energy gap for large values of U and Delta epsilon_{d}.
The Hall coefficient R_H of Na_xCoO_2 (x = 0.68) behaves anomalously at high temperatures. From 200 to 500 K, R_H increases linearly with T to 8 times the expected Drude value, with no sign of saturation. Together with the thermopower Q, the behavior of R_H provides firm evidence for strong correlation. We discuss the effect of hopping on a triangular lattice and compare R_H with a recent prediction by Kumar and Shastry.
In order to shed light on the electronic structure of Na_xCoO_2, and motivated by recent Co L-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) experiments with polarized light, we calculate the electronic spectrum of a CoO_6 cluster including all interactions between 3d orbitals. We obtain the ground state for two electronic occupations in the cluster that correspond nominally to all O in the O^{-2} oxidation state, and Co^{+3} or Co^{+4}. Then, all excited states obtained by promotion of a Co 2p electron to a 3d electron, and the corresponding matrix elements are calculated. A fit of the observed experime…
We investigate the doping dependence of the nanoscale electronic and magnetic inhomogeneities in the hole-doping range 0.002<x<0.1 of cobalt based perovskites, La{1-x}Sr_xCoO_3. Using single crystal inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements we show that the lightly doped system exhibits magneto-electronic phase separation in form of spin-state polarons. Higher hole doping leads to a decay of spin-state polarons in favor of larger-scale magnetic clusters, due to competing ferromagnetic correlations of Co^{3+} ions which are formed by neighboring polarons. The present data give…
A new mechanism for superconductivity in the newly discovered Co-based oxide is proposed by using charge fluctuation. A single-band extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice is studied within random phase approximation. $f$-wave triplet superconductivity is stabilized in the vicinity of charge-density-wave instability, which is in sharp contrast with the square-lattice case. The physical origin of the realization of the $f$-wave triplet state as well as the relevance to experiments are discussed.
Raman scattering experiments on Na_{x}CoO_2 yH_2O single crystals show a broad electronic continuum with a pronounced peak around 100 cm-1 and a cutoff at approximately 560 cm-1over a wide range of doping levels. The electronic Raman spectra in superconducting and non-superconducting samples are similar at room temperature, but evolve in markedly different ways with decreasing temperature. For superconducting samples, the low-energy spectral weight is depleted upon cooling below T* sim 150K, indicating a opening of a pseudogap that is not present in non-superconducting materials. Weak addition…
We systematically study Raman spectroscopy of cleaved Na$_x$CoO$_2$ single crystals with 0.37 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.80. The Raman shift of A$_{1g}$ mode is found to be linearly dependent on Na content, while the Raman shift of E$_{1g}$ mode has an abnormal shift to high frequency around x = 0.5. The abnormal shift is ascribed to the occurrence of Na rearrangement in O1 structure. Temperature dependent Raman spectrum for x = 0.56 sample shows that Na rearrangement transition from O1 structure to H1 structure occurs around 240 K. Electronic transport and susceptibility for the sample with $x=0.56$ s…
We study the Andreev edge state on the semi-infinite triangular lattice with different pairing symmetries and boundary topologies. We find a rich phase diagram of zero energy Andreev edge states that is a unique fingerprint of each of the possible pairing symmetries. We propose to pin down the pairing symmetry in recently discovered Na_xCoO_2 material by the Fourier-transformed scanning tunneling spectroscopy for the edge state. A surprisingly rich phase diagram is found and explained by a general gauge argument and mapping to 1D tight-binding model. Extensions of this work are discussed at th…

Takada et al. have reported superconductivity in layered $Na__x CoO_2.yH_2O$ ($T_c \approx5 K$) and more recently Wen et al. in $A_xCoO_{2+δ}$ ($A = Na,K$)(\tc$\approx~31 K$). We model a reference neutral \cob layer as an orbitally non-degenerate spin-\half antiferromagnetic Mott insulator on a triangular lattice and $Na__x CoO_2.yH_2O$ and $A_xCoO_{2+δ}$ as electron doped Mott insulators described by a t-J model. It is suggested that at optimal doping chiral spin fluctuations enhanced by the dopant dynamics leads to a d-wave superconducting state. A chiral RVB metal, a PT violating state with…
As a model of a novel superconductor Na_xCoO_2\cdotyH_2O, a single-band t-J model on a triangular lattice is studied, using a variational Monte Carlo method. We calculate the energies of various superconducting (SC) states, changing the doping rate δand sign of t for small J/|t|. Symmetries of s, d, and d+id (p+ip and f) waves are taken up as candidates for singlet (triplet) pairing. In addition, the possibility of Nagaoka ferromagnetism and inhomogeneous phases is considered. It is revealed that, among the SC states, the d+id wave always has the lowest energy, which result supports previous m…
The electronic state in layered cobalt oxides with hexagonal structure is examined. We find that the electronic structure reflects the nature of the Kagomé lattice hidden in the CoO_2 layer which consists of stacked triangular lattices of oxygen ions and of cobalt ions. A fundamental model for the electron system is proposed and the mechanism of the unique transport and magnetic properties of the cobalt oxides are discussed in the light of the model.
We propose that unconventional superconductivity in hydrated sodium cobaltate $Na_xCoO_2$ results from an interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon interactions. On the basis of the $t-V$ model plus phonons we found evidences for a) unconventional superconductivity, b) realistic values of $T_c$ and c) the dome shape existing near $x \sim 0.35$. This picture is obtained for $V$ close to the critical Coulomb repulsion $V_c$ which separates the uniform Fermi liquid from $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ CDW ordered phase.
We study novel electronic properties of the Hubbard model on a triangular lattice using the cellular dynamical mean-field theory. The interplay of strong geometric frustration and electron correlations causes a Mott transition at the Hubbard interaction $U/t=10.5$ and an unusual suppression of low energy spin excitations. Doping of a triangular Mott insulator leads to a quasiparticle peak (no pseudogap) at the Fermi surface and to an unexpected increase of low energy spin excitations, in stark contrast to the unfrustrated square lattice case. The present results give much insight into strongly…
Research on the oxide perovskites has uncovered electronic properties that are strikingly enhanced compared with those in conventional metals. Examples are the high critical temperatures of the cuprate superconductors and the colossal magnetoresistance in the manganites. The conducting layered cobaltate $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ displays several interesting electronic phases as $x$ is varied including water-induced superconductivity and an insulating state that is destroyed by field. Initial measurements showed that, in the as-grown composition, $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ displays moderately large thermopower $S$ …
The determination by powder neutron diffraction of the ambient temperature crystal structures of compounds in the NaxCoO2 family, for 0.3 < x <= 1.0, is reported. The structures consist of triangular CoO2 layers with Na ions distributed in intervening charge reservoir layers. The shapes of the CoO6 octahedra that make up the CoO2 layers are found to be critically dependent on the electron count and on the distribution of the Na ions in the intervening layers, where two types of Na sites are available. Correlation of the shapes of cobalt-oxygen octahedra, the Na ion positions, and the electroni…
We present scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy studies around an individual excess Fe atom, working as a local perturbation, in the parent material of the iron-chalcogenide superconductor Fe$_{1+δ}$Te. Spectroscopic imaging reveals a novel isosceles triangular electronic structure around the excess Fe atoms. Its spatial symmetry reects the underlying bicollinear antiferromagnetic spin state and the structural monoclinic symmetry. These findings provide important clues to understand the role of the excess Fe atoms, which complicate the understanding of the phenomena occurring in iron…
The electronic structure of an isostructural series of molecular conductors, β'-X[Pd(dmit)_2]_2 is systematically studied by a first-principles method based on the density-functional theory. The calculated band structures are fitted to the tight-binding model based on Pd(dmit)_2 dimers on the triangular lattice. We find systematic variation in the anisotropy of the transfer integrals along the three directions of the triangular lattice taking different values. The transfer integral along the face-to-face stacking direction of Pd(dmit)_2 dimers is always the largest. Around the quantum spin liq…
A 59Co NMR study of CoO2, the x=0 end member of AxCoO2 (A = Na, Li...) cobaltates, reveals a metallic ground state, though with clear signs of strong electron correlations: low-energy spin fluctuations develop at wave vectors q different from 0 and a crossover to a Fermi-liquid regime occurs below a characteristic temperature T*~7 K. Despite some uncertainty over the exact cobalt oxidation state n this material, the results show that electronic correlations are revealed as x is reduced below 0.3. The data are consistent with NaxCoO2 being close to the Mott transition in the x -> 0 limit.
We show that geometric frustration and strong correlation in the triangular lattice Hubbard model lead a rich and novel phase structure of $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ spin-charge textured electronic states over a wide region of electron doping $0\le x \le 0.40$. In addition to the 120$^\circ$ Néel ordered insulator at half-filling, we found a novel spin-charge ordered insulator at $x=1/3$ with collinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order on the underlying unfrustrated honeycomb lattice. Separating the two insulating phases is a Lifshitz transition between a noncollinear AF ordered metal and one with co…
We uncover four new spin-charge ordered ground states in the strong coupling limit of the Kondo lattice model on triangular geometry. Two of the states at one-third electronic filling ($n=1/3$) consist of decorated ferromagnetic chains coupled antiferromagnetically with the neighboring chains. The third magnetic ground state is noncollinear, consisting of antiferromagnetic chains separated by a pair of canted ferromagnetic chains. An even more unusual magnetic ground state, a variant of the $120^{\circ}$ Yafet-Kittel phase, is discovered at $n=2/3$. These magnetic orders are stabilized by open…
Phase diagram of an Ising-spin Kondo lattice model on a triangular lattice near 1/3-filling is investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. We identify a partially disordered phase with coexistence of magnetic order and paramagnetic moments, which was unstable in two-dimensional Ising models with localized spins only. The partial disorder emerges in the competing regime between a twosublattice stripe phase and three-sublattice ferrimagnetic phase, at finite temperatures above an electronic phase separation. The peculiar magnetic structure accompanies a charge order and develops a gap in the electro…
The role of the multiorbital effects on the emergence of frustrated electronic orders on the triangular lattice at half filling is investigated through an extended spinless fermion Hubbard model. By using two complementary approaches, unrestricted Hartree-Fock and exact diagonalizations, we unravel a very rich phase diagram controlled by the strength of both local and off-site Coulomb interactions and by the interorbital hopping anisotropy ratio $t'/t$. Three robust unconventional electronic phases, a pinball liquid, an inverse pinball liquid, and a large-unit-cell $\sqrt{12} \times \sqrt{12}$…
Noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic orders lead to unusual electronic structures and transport properties. We here investigate two types of multiple-Q magnetically ordered states and a topological phase transition between them in two dimensions. One is a coplanar but noncollinear double-Q state on a square lattice, which is a semimetal accommodating massless Dirac electrons. The other is a noncoplanar triple-Q state on a triangular lattice, which is a Chern insulator showing the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We discuss the peculiar electronic structures in these two multiple-Q states in a u…
We study the anomalous Hall effect on the antiferromagnetic coloring-triangular lattice with a coplanar magnetic configuration in presence of a spin-orbit interaction. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling is included at effective level as a rotation of the electronic spin as the electrons hop from site to site. Our result reveals that a finite Hall conductivity in the planar 120$^{\circ}$ structure takes place if a finite spin-orbit coupling is present. A quantized Hall conductivity occurs at global band gaps resulting from the topologically non-trivial band structure.
Experimental confirmation of the magnetic ordering transition induced by an electronic structure change in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$
We obtain the electronic states and structures of two-dimensional cobalt oxides, Na$_{x}$CoO$_{2}$ (x=0, 0.35, 0.5 and 0.75) by utilizing the full-potential linear muffin-tin orbitals (FP-LMTO) methods, from which some essential electronic interaction parameters are estimated: the bare on-site Coulomb interaction of cobalt U$_{dd}$=7.5 eV renormalizes to 5 eV for x=0.35, the $pd$ hybridizations t$_{pdσ}$ and t$_{pdπ}$ are -1.40 and 0.70 eV, respectively. The density of states at E$_{F}$ decreases from 6-7 states/eV in the local density approximation (LDA) to about 1.0 states/eV in the LDA+U sc…
Organic charge transfer salts based on the molecule Pd(dmit)2 display strong electronic correlations and geometrical frustration, leading to spin liquid, valence bond solid, and superconducting states, amongst other interesting phases. The low energy electronic degrees of freedom of these materials are often described by a single band model; a triangular lattice with a molecular orbital representing a Pd(dmit)2 dimer on each site. We use ab initio electronic structure calculations to construct and parametrize low energy effective model Hamiltonians for a class of Me(4-n) EtnX[Pd(dmit)2]2 (X=As…
We have studied the electronic structure of the Ni triangular lattice in NiGa$_2$S$_4$ using photoemission spectroscopy and subsequent model calculations. The cluster-model analysis of the Ni 2$p$ core-level spectrum shows that the S 3$p$ to Ni 3$d$ charge-transfer energy is $\sim$ -1 eV and the ground state is dominated by the $d^9L$ configuration ($L$ is a S 3$p$ hole). Cell perturbation analysis for the NiS$_2$ triangular lattice indicates that the strong S 3$p$ hole character of the ground state provides the enhanced superexchange interaction between the third nearest neighbor sites.
In spin-charge coupled systems, geometrical frustration of underlying lattice structures can give rise to nontrivial magnetic orders and electronic states. Here we explore such a possibility in the Kondo lattice model with classical localized spins on a triangular lattice by using a variational calculation and simulated annealing. We find that the system exhibits a four-sublattice collinear ferrimagnetic phase at 5/8 filling for a large Hund's-rule coupling. In this state, the system spontaneously differentiates into the up-spin kagome network and the isolated down-spin sites, which we call th…
We report detailed Fermi surface topology and quasiparticle dynamics of the host cobaltate Na0.7CoO2. A direct mapping of the Fermi surface is carried out by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Fermi surface at temperature 16K is a hole-pocket centered around the Gamma-point. The highly correlated nature of the electron liquid is evidenced from strong on-site Coulomb interaction seen through a valence satellite and via renormalization of the quasiparticle dispersion. The quasiparticle exhibits spectral coherence only below 150K which includes the non-Fermi liquid regime.
We report a detailed study of a model Hamiltonian which exhibits a rich interplay of geometrical spin frustration, strong electronic correlations, and charge ordering. The character of the insulating phase depends on the magnitude of Delta/|t| and on the sign of t. We find a Mott insulator for Delta >> U >> |t|; a charge transfer insulator for U >> Δ>> |t|; and a correlated covalent insulator for U >> Δ~ |t|. The charge transfer insulating state is investigated using a strong coupling expansion. The frustration of the triangular lattice can lead to antiferromagnetism or ferromagnetism dependin…
We investigate the electronic states of the CoO_2 plane in the layered cobalt oxides Na_{0.5}CoO_{2} using the realistic 11 band d-p model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. Effects of the Coulomb interaction on a Co site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J', are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. It is found that the metallic antiferromagnetism takes place below T_{c1} and, in addition, the orbital order accompanied by the small charge order takes place below T_{c2} (< T_{c1}) where the system becomes insulator…
We investigate the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice as a suggested effective description of the Mott phase in various triangular organic compounds. Employing the variational cluster approximation and the ladder dual-fermion approach as complementary methods to adequately treat the zero-temperature and the finite-temperature domains, we obtain a consistent picture of the phase diagram as a function of anisotropy and interaction strength. The metal-insulator transition substantially depends on the anisotropy, and so does the nature of magnetism and the emergence of a nonmagnet…
Ground state of the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice is systematically investigated by the mean-field approximation. We found that the model exhibits two different types of partially disordered states: one is at half filling and the other is at other commensurate fillings. In the latter case, the kinetic energy is lowered by forming an extensive network involving both magnetic and nonmagnetic sites, in sharp contrast to the former case in which the nonmagnetic sites are rather isolated. This spatially extended nature of nonmagnetic sites yields a metallic partially-disordered st…
Motivated by the importance of non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic phases in determining various electrical properties of magnetic materials, we investigate the phase diagrams of the extended Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular lattice. We make use of a mean-field scheme that treats collinear, non-collinear and non-coplanar phases on equal footing. In addition to the ferromagnetic and 120° antiferromagnetic phases, we find the four-sublattice flux, the 3Q non-coplanar and the non-collinear charge-ordered states to be stable at specific values of filling fraction $n$. Inter-site Coulomb…
Based on the ladder dual-fermion approach, we present a comprehensive study of the phases of the isotropic Hubbard model on the triangular lattice. We find a rich phase diagram containing most of the phases that have already been experimentally observed in systems where the interplay between geometric frustration and electronic correlations is important: paramagnetic metal, paramagnetic insulator, Mott-insulator with $120^{\circ}$ antiferromagnetic and a non-magnetic insulating state, i.e. possibly a spin liquid state. This establishes that the Hubbard model on frustrated lattices can serve as…
We report resonant X-ray scattering measurements on the orbitally-degenerate triangular metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2 to probe the spontaneous transition to a triple-cell superstructure at temperatures below 365 K. We observe a strong resonant enhancement of the supercell reflections through the Ni K-edge. The empirically extracted K-edge shift between the crystallographically-distinct Ni sites of 2.5(3) eV is much larger than the value expected from the shift in final states, and implies a core-level shift of ~1 eV, thus providing direct evidence for the onset of spontaneous honeycomb ch…
The Sn-induced $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$ surface reconstruction on Si(111) has been investigated by material-specific many-body calculations and by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). This triangular surface system in the low adatom coverage regime is governed by rather localized dangling bond orbitals with enhanced electronic correlations and it is prone to exhibit magnetic frustration. We find a rather good overall agreement of the spectral function and its temperature-dependence between theory and experiment. Changes in the ARPES band topology in comparison to the density functi…
Inelastic neutron scattering study on the spin-chain compound Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ reveals gapped quasi-1D magnetic excitations. The observed one-magnon band between 29.5 and 39 meV consists of magnon modes of the Ni$^{2+}$ ions. The fitting of the spin wave spectrum reveals strongly coupled Ising-like chains along the $c$-axis that are weakly coupled into a frustrated triangular lattice in the $ab$-plane. The magnetic excitations survive up to 200 K well above the magnetic ordering temperature of $T_N \sim 75$ K, also indicating a quasi-1D nature of the magnetic interactions in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$. Ou…
Spinless, interacting electrons on a finite size triangular lattice moving in an extremely strong perpendicular magnetic field are studied and compared with the results on a square lattice. Using a Falicov-Kimball model, the effects of the magnetic field, Coulomb correlation and finite system size on their energy spectrum are observed. It is possible to induce a gap in the spectrum by tuning the magnetic field even in the absence of correlation, though extra states appear in the gap due to finite size. An orbital current is calculated for both the square and triangular lattice with and without…
The spin-orbital model for triply degenerate t_2g electrons on a triangular lattice has been shown to be dominated by dimers: the phase diagram contains both strongly resonating, compound spin-orbital dimer states and quasi-static, spin-singlet valence-bond (VB) states. To elucidate the nature of the true ground state in these different regimes, the model is mapped to a number of quantum dimer models (QDMs), each of which has three dimer colors. The generic multicolored QDM, illustrated for the two- and three-color cases, possesses a topological color structure, "color vison" excitations, and …
High-temperature bad-metal transport has been recently studied both theoretically and in experiments as one of the key signatures of strong electronic correlations. Here we use the dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and its cluster extensions, as well as the finite-temperature Lanczos method (FTLM) to explore the influence of lattice frustration on the thermodynamic and transport properties of the Hubbard model at high temperatures. We consider the triangular and the square lattice at half-filling and at 15\% hole-doping. We find that for $T \gtrsim 1.5t$ the self-energy becomes practically lo…
Using large-scale dynamical cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we explore the unconventional superconductivity in the hole-doped Hubbard model on the triangular lattice. Due to the interplay of electronic correlations, geometric frustration, and Fermi surface topology, we find a doubly degenerate singlet pairing state at an interaction strength close to the bare bandwidth. Such an unconventional superconducting state is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations along the $Γ$-$K$ direction, where the Fermi surface is nested. An exact decomposition of the irreducible particle-particl…
We probed the local electronic properties of the mixed-valent Co(+4-x) triangular-lattice in Na{x}CoO{2}-yH{2}O by 59-Co NMR. We observed two distinct types of Co sites for x>=1/2, but the valence seems averaged out for x~1/3. Local spin fluctuations exhibit qualitatively the same trend down to ~100 K regardless of the carrier-concentration x, and hence the nature of the electronic ground state. A canonical Fermi-liquid behavior emerges below ~100 K only for x~1/3.
We study the competition between magnetic and spin-liquid phases in the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, which is described by two hopping parameters t and t' in different spatial directions and is relevant for layered organic charge-transfer salts. By using a variational approach that includes spiral magnetic order, we provide solid evidence that a spin-liquid phase is stabilized in the strongly-correlated regime and close to the isotropic limit t'/t=1. Otherwise, a magnetically ordered spiral state is found, connecting the (collinear) Néel and the (coplanar) 120° phases. …
The nature of electronic states due to strong correlation and geometric frustration on the triangular lattice is investigated in connection to the unconventional insulating state of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at $x=0.5$. We study an extended Hubbard model using a spatially unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation. We find a new class of charge and spin ordered states at $x=1/3$ and $x=0.5$ where antiferromagnetic (AF) frustration is alleviated via weak charge inhomogeneity. At $x=0.5$, we show that the $\sqrt{3}a\times2a$ off-plane Na dopant order induces weak $\sqrt{3}a\times1a$ charge order in the Co layer.…
Pb-doping effect on physical properties of misfit-layered (Bi,Pb)-Sr-Co-O system, in which Co ions form a two-dimensional triangular lattice, was investigated in detail by electronic transport, magnetization and specific-heat measurements. Pb doping enhances the metallic behavior, suggesting that carriers are doped. Pb doping also enhances the magnetic correlation in this system and increases the magnetic transition temperature. We found the existence of the short-range magnetic correlation far above the transition temperature, which seems to induce the spin-glass state coexisting with the fer…
Motivated by the importance of antiferromagnetic skyrmions as building blocks of next-generation data storage and processing devices, we report theoretical and computational analysis of a model for a spin-orbit coupled correlated magnet on a triangular lattice. We find that two distinct antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) states can be stabilized at low temperatures in the presence of external magnetic field. The results are obtained via Monte Carlo simulations on an effective magnetic model derived from the microscopic electronic Hamiltonian consisting of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a…
In quantum magnetism spin dimers are typically associated with spin-singlet states. To date, $triplet$ $dimerization$ has not been observed in any 3D or quasi-2D material. With this in mind we here discuss the electronic structure of the spin-orbit driven $5d^5$ Mott insulator Li$_2$IrO$_3$, a honeycomb-lattice system with two crystallographically inequivalent Ir-Ir bonds. From $ab$ $initio$ many-body calculations we find that, while both Heisenberg and Kitaev couplings are present, the magnetic interactions are dominated by a strong isotropic ferromagnetic exchange on only one set of bonds. T…
We study a model of strongly interacting spinless fermions on an anisotropic triangular lattice. At half-filling and the limit of strong repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions, the fermions align in stripes and form an insulating state. When a particle is doped, it either follows a one-dimensional free motion along the stripes or fractionalizes perpendicular to the stripes. The two propagations yield a dimensional tuning of the electronic state. We study the stability of this phase and derive an effective model to describe the low-energy excitations. Spectral functions are presented which can…
We study the ground state properties, the electronic excitations and lattice dynamics in spin-liquid candidate TbInO$_3$. By employing polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy we define the inter- and intra-multiplet excitations, and establish the low-energy crystal-field (CF) level scheme. In particular, we demonstrate that the ground state of the Tb$^{3+}$ ions is a non-Kramers doublet, and relate the enhanced linewidth of the CF modes to the magnetic fluctuations near the spin-liquid ground state. We identify all 38 allowed Raman-active phonon modes at low temperature. Moreover, we observe …
LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ is an electrically insulating geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet in which inorganic Mo$_3$O$_{13}$ clusters each behaves as a single $S = 1/2$ unit, with the clusters arranged on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. Prior results have shown that LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ does not exhibit static magnetic order down to at least $T = 0.05\,K$, and instead possesses a valence bond ground state. Here, we show that LiZn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ can be hole doped by oxidation with $\mathrm{I}_2$ and subsequent removal of $\mathrm{Zn}^{2+}$ cations to access the entire range of electron cou…
Motivated by the research interests on realizing flat bands and magnetization plateaus in kagome lattices, we study the electronic properties and magnetic interactions in both zero- and one-dimensional triangular Kagome lattice (1D-TKL) models, by using the real-space Greens function approach in tight-binding model. We firstly study the electronic properties of both 0D and 1D-TKL in the presence of staggered sublattice potential, then, by analyzing the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida (RKKY) interaction in these lattice structures, the magnetic ground states of both 0D and 1D-TKL in the presence…
