We derive the diversity order of some multiple antenna multi-user cancellation and detection schemes. The common property of these detection methods is the usage of Alamouti and quasi-orthogonal space-time block codes. For detecting $J$ users each having $N$ transmit antennas, these schemes require only $J$ antennas at the receiver. Our analysis shows that when having $M$ receive antennas, the array-processing schemes provide the diversity order of $N(M-J+1)$. In addition, our results prove that regardless of the number of users or receive antennas, when using maximum-likelihood decoding we get the full transmit and receive diversities, i.e. $NM$, similar to the no-interference scenario.
We analyze the performance of massive MIMO systems with $N$-antenna users. The benefit is that $N$ streams can be multiplexed per user, at the price of increasing the channel estimation overhead linearly with $N$. Uplink and downlink spectral efficiency (SE) expressions are derived for any $N$, and these are achievable using estimated channels and per-user-basis MMSE-SIC detectors. Large-system approximations of the SEs are obtained. This analysis shows that MMSE-SIC has similar asymptotic SE as linear MMSE detectors, indicating that the SE increase from having multi-antenna users can be harve…
We prove convexity of the sum-power constrained mean square error (MSE) region in case of two single-antenna users communicating with a multi-antenna base station. Due to the MSE duality this holds both for the vector broadcast channel and the dual multiple access channel. Increasing the number of users to more than two, we show by means of a simple counter-example that the resulting MSE region is not necessarily convex any longer, even under the assumption of single-antenna users. In conjunction with our former observation that the two user MSE region is not necessarily convex for two multi-a…
A great deal of efforts have been made on the performance evaluation of distributed antenna systems (DASs). Most of them assume a regular base-station (BS) antenna layout where the number of BS antennas is usually small. With the growing interest in cellular systems with large antenna arrays at BSs, it becomes increasingly important for us to study how the BS antenna layout affects the rate performance when a massive number of BS antennas are employed. This paper presents a comparative study of the asymptotic rate performance of downlink multi-user systems with multiple BS antennas either co-l…
For a $K$-user interference channel with $M$ antenna at each transmitter and each receiver, the maximum total DoF of this channel has been previously determined to be $\max \sum_{k=1}^K d_k = MK/2$. However, the DoF region remains to be unknown. In this short note, through a simple time-sharing argument, we obtain the degrees of freedom (DoF) region of this channel.
We analyze the sensitivity of the capacity of a multi-antenna multi-user system to the number of users being served. We show analytically that, for a given desired sum-rate, the extra power needed to serve a subset of the users at low SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) can be very small, and is generally much smaller than the extra power needed to serve the same subset at high SNR. The advantages of serving only subsets of the users are many: multi-user algorithms have lower complexity, reduced channel-state information requirements, and, often, better performance. We provide guidelines on how many u…

In downlink multi-antenna systems with many users, the multiplexing gain is strictly limited by the number of transmit antennas $N$ and the use of these antennas. Assuming that the total number of receive antennas at the multi-antenna users is much larger than $N$, the maximal multiplexing gain can be achieved with many different transmission/reception strategies. For example, the excess number of receive antennas can be utilized to schedule users with effective channels that are near-orthogonal, for multi-stream multiplexing to users with well-conditioned channels, and/or to enable interferen…
This paper considers broadcast channels with L antennas at the base station and m single-antenna users, where each user has perfect channel knowledge and the base station obtains channel information through a finite rate feedback. The key observation of this paper is that the optimal number of on-users (users turned on), say s, is a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and other system parameters. Towards this observation, we use asymptotic analysis to guide the design of feedback and transmission strategies. As L, m and the feedback rates approach infinity linearly, we derive the asymptoti…
This paper considers broadcast channels with L antennas at the base station and m single-antenna users, where L and m are typically of the same order. We assume that only partial channel state information is available at the base station through a finite rate feedback. Our key observation is that the optimal number of on-users (users turned on), say s, is a function of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and feedback rate. In support of this, an asymptotic analysis is employed where L, m and the feedback rate approach infinity linearly. We derive the asymptotic optimal feedback strategy as well as a r…
We consider the multi-user MIMO broadcast channel with $M$ single-antenna users and $N$ transmit antennas under the constraint that each antenna emits signals having constant envelope (CE). The motivation for this is that CE signals facilitate the use of power-efficient RF power amplifiers. Analytical and numerical results show that, under certain mild conditions on the channel gains, for a fixed $M$, array gain is achievable even under the stringent per-antenna CE constraint (essentially, for a fixed $M$, at sufficiently large $N$ the total transmitted power can be reduced with increasing $N$…

In this letter, we study a new technique for energy beamforming (EB) in multi-user networks, which combines large antenna retrodirectivity at the transmitter side with signal backscattering at the energy receivers. The proposed technique has low complexity and achieves EB without any active operation at the receivers or complicated signal processing techniques at the transmitter. Since the average harvested energy depends on the backscattering coefficients, we investigate different reflection policies for various design objectives. The proposed policies are analyzed from a system level standpo…
In this paper, we design interference free transceivers for multi-user two-way relay systems, where a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously exchanges information with multiple single-antenna users via a multi-antenna amplify-and-forward relay station (RS). To offer a performance benchmark and provide useful insight into the transceiver structure, we employ alternating optimization to find optimal transceivers at the BS and RS that maximizes the bidirectional sum rate. We then propose a low complexity scheme, where the BS transceiver is the zero-forcing precoder and detector, and the R…
This paper studies energy-efficient joint transmit and receive beamforming in multi-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output systems. We consider conventional network energy efficiency metric where the users can receive unicasting streams in addition to the group-specific common multicasting streams which have certain rate constraints. The goal is to use the transmission resources more efficiently to improve the energy efficiency, when the users are equipped with multiple antennas. Numerical results show the achieved energy efficiency gains by using the additional degrees of freedom of t…
In this letter, we present the first characterization for the achievable Degrees-of-Freedom (DoF) by Blind Interference Alignment (BIA) using staggered antenna switching in the $K$-user Gaussian Interference Channel. In such scheme, each transmitter is equipped with one conventional antenna and each receiver is equipped with one reconfigurable (multi-mode) antenna. Assuming that the channel is known to the receivers only, we show that BIA can achieve $\frac{2K}{K+2}$ DoF, which surpasses the sum DoF achieved by previously known interference alignment schemes with delayed channel state informat…
We investigate a cognitive radio scenario involving a single cognitive transmitter equipped with $\mathcal{K}$ antennas sharing the spectrum with $\mathcal{M}$ primary users (PUs) transmitting over orthogonal bands. Each terminal has a queue to store its incoming traffic. We propose a novel protocol where the cognitive user transmits its packet over a channel formed by the aggregate of the inactive primary bands. We study the impact of the number of PUs, sensing errors, and the number of antennas on the maximum secondary stable throughput.

In this paper, we present the error performance analysis of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) physical-layer network coding (PNC) system with two different user-antenna selection (AS) schemes in asymmetric channel conditions. For the first antenna selection scheme (AS1), where the user-antenna is selected in order to maximize the overall channel gain between the user and the relay, we give an explicit analytical proof that for binary modulations, the system achieves full diversity order of $min(N_A , N_B ) \times N_R$ in the multiple-access (MA) phase, where $N_A$, $N_B$ and $N_R$ denote…
Despite substantial rate gains achieved by coordinated transmission from a massive amount of geographically distributed antennas, the resulting computational cost and channel measurement overhead could be unaffordable for a large-scale distributed antenna system (DAS). A scalable signal processing framework is therefore highly desirable, which, as recently demonstrated in \cite{Dai_TWireless}, could be established based on the concept of virtual cell. In a virtual-cell based DAS, each user chooses a few closest base-station (BS) antennas to form its virtual cell, that is, its own serving BS an…
A Gibbs distribution based combinatorial optimization algorithm for joint antenna splitting and user scheduling problem in full duplex massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system is proposed in this paper. The optimal solution of this problem can be determined by exhaustive search. However, the complexity of this approach becomes prohibitive in practice when the sample space is large, which is usually the case in massive MIMO systems. Our algorithm overcomes this drawback by converting the original problem into a Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence minimization problem, and solving it th…
This paper considers a fully-connected interference network with a relay in which multiple users equipped with a single antenna want to exchange multiple unicast messages with other users in the network by sharing the relay equipped with multiple antennas. For such a network, the degrees of freedom (DoF) are derived by considering various message exchange scenarios: a multi-user fully-connected Y channel, a two-pair two-way interference channel with the relay, and a two-pair two-way X channel with the relay. Further, considering distributed relays employing a single antenna in the two-way inte…
We consider a user-centric co-operative cellular network, where base stations (BSs) close to a mobile co-operate to detect its signal using a (joint) linear minimum-mean-square-error receiver. The BSs are at arbitrary positions and mobiles are modeled as a planar Poisson Point Process (PPP). Combining stochastic geometry and infinite-random-matrix theory, we derive a simple expression for the spectral efficiency of this complex system as the number of antennas grows large. This framework is applied to BS locations from PPPs and hexagonal grids, and are validated through Monte Carlo simulations…
The sum-rate of the broadcast channel in a multi-antenna multi-user communication system can be achieved by using precoding and adding a regular perturbation to the data vector. The perturbation can be removed by the modulus function, thus transparent to the receiver, but the information of the precoding matrix is needed to decode the symbols. This paper proposes a new technique to improve the multi-antenna multi-user system, by adding a continuous perturbation to the data vector without the need of information on the precoding matrix to be known at the receiver. The perturbation vector will b…
We consider downlink cellular multi-user communication between a base station (BS) having N antennas and M single-antenna users, i.e., an N X M Gaussian Broadcast Channel (GBC). Under an average only total transmit power constraint (APC), large antenna arrays at the BS (having tens to a few hundred antennas) have been recently shown to achieve remarkable multi-user interference (MUI) suppression with simple precoding techniques. However, building large arrays in practice, would require cheap/power-efficient Radio-Frequency(RF) electronic components. The type of transmitted signal that facilita…
The problem of finding the optimal number of data streams to transmit in a multi-user MIMO scenario, where both the transmitters and receivers are equipped with multiple antennas is considered. Without channel state information at any transmitter, with a zero-forcing receiver each user is shown to transmit a single data stream to maximize its own outage capacity in the presence of sufficient number of users. Transmitting a single data stream is also shown to be optimal in terms of maximizing the sum of the outage capacities in the presence of sufficient number of users.
We consider a cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network in which a full-duplex (FD) multi-antenna relay assists transmission from a base station (BS) to a set of far users with poor channel conditions, while at the same time the BS transmits to a set of near users with strong channel conditions. We assume imperfect self-interference (SI) cancellation at the FD relay and imperfect inter-user interference cancellation at the near users. In order to cancel the SI at the relay a zero-forcing based beamforming scheme is used and the corresponding outage probability analysis of two u…
Massive spatial modulation aided multiple-input multiple-output (SM-MIMO) systems have recently been proposed as a novel combination of spatial modulation (SM) and of conventional massive MIMO, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a large number of antennas and simultaneously serves multiple user equipment (UE) that employ SM for their uplink transmission. Since the massive SM-MIMO concept combines the benefits of both the SM and massive MIMO techniques, it has recently attracted substantial research interest. In this paper, we study the achievable uplink spectral efficiency (SE) of a …
The strong interference suffered by users can be a severe problem in cache-enabled networks (CENs) due to the content-centric user association mechanism. To tackle this issue, multi-antenna technology may be employed for interference management. In this paper, we consider a user-centric interference nulling (IN) scheme in two-tier multi-user multi-antenna CEN, with a hybrid most-popular and random caching policy at macro base stations (MBSs) and small base stations (SBSs) to provide file diversity. All the interfering SBSs within the IN range of a user are requested to suppress the interferenc…
To improve diversity gain in an interference channel and hence to maximize diversity multiplexing tradeoff (DMT), we propose on-off switched interference alignment (IA) where IA is intermittently utilized by switching IA on/off. For on-off switching, either IA with symbol extension or IA with Alamouti coding is adopted in this paper. Deriving and analyzing DMT of the proposed schemes, we reveal that the intermittent utilization of IA with simultaneous non-unique decoding can improve DMT in the 2-user X-channel with two antennas. Both the proposed schemes are shown to achieve diversity gain of …
In this work, we present a cloud-aided uplink framework for multi-way multiple-antenna relay systems which facilitates joint linear Maximum Likelihood (ML) symbol detection in the cloud and where users are selected to simultaneously transmit to each other aided by relays. We also investigate relay selection techniques for the proposed cloud-aided uplink framework that uses cloud-based buffers and physical-layer network coding. In particular, we develop a novel multi-way relay selection protocol based on the selection of the best link, denoted as Multi-Way Cloud-Aided Best-User-Link (MWC-Best-U…
In this paper we analyze a constant multiple-input multiple-output interference channel where a set of active users are cooperating through interference alignment while a set of secondary users desire access to the channel. We derive the minimum number of secondary transmit antennas required so that a secondary user can use the channel without affecting the sum rate of the active users, under a zero-forcing equalization assumption. When the secondary users have enough antennas, we derive several secondary user precoders that approximately maximize the secondary users' sum rate without changing…
In this paper, we consider the problem of the interference alignment for the $K$-user SISO interference channel with blind channel state information at transmitters (CSIT). Our achievement in contrast to popular $K-$user interference alignment (IA) scheme has more practical notions. In this case every receiver is equipped with one reconfigurable antenna which tries to place its desired signal in a subspace which is linearly independent from interference signals. We show that if the channel values are known to the receivers only, the sum degrees-of-freedom (DOF) rate region of the linear BIA wi…
We consider the uplink of a single-cell multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with several single antenna transmitters/users and one base station with $N$ antennas in the $N\rightarrow\infty$ regime. The base station antennas are evenly distributed to $n$ admissable locations throughout the cell. First, we show that a reliable (per-user) rate of $O(\log n)$ is achievable through optimal locational optimization of base station antennas. We also prove that an $O(\log n)$ rate is the best possible. Therefore, in contrast to a centralized or circular deployment, where the achieva…
The K-user multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with no channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is considered, where each receiver is assumed to be equipped with reconfigurable antennas capable of choosing a subset of receiving modes from several preset modes. Under general antenna configurations, the sum linear degrees of freedom (LDoF) of the K-user MIMO BC with reconfigurable antennas is completely characterized, which corresponds to the maximum sum DoF achievable by linear coding strategies. The LDoF region is further characterized for a class of ant…
This paper aims at answering two fundamental questions: how area spectral efficiency (ASE) behaves with different system parameters; how to design an energy-efficient network. Based on stochastic geometry, we obtain the expression and a tight lower-bound for ASE of Poisson distributed networks considering multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) transmission. With the help of the lower-bound, some interesting results are observed. These results are validated via numerical results for the original expression. We find that ASE can be viewed as a concave function with respect to the number of antennas and activ…
This paper presents a generalized closed-form beamforming technique that can achieve the maximum degrees of freedom in compounded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels with mixed classes of multiple-antenna users. The contribution is firstly described within the context of a three-cell network and later extended to the general multi-cell scenario where we also show how to determine the conditions required to align the interference in a subspace that is orthogonal to the one reserved for the desired signals. This is then followed by an analysis of the impact of antenna correl…
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) regions of two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Z and full interference channels in this paper. We assume that the receivers always have perfect channel state information. We derive the DoF region of Z interference channel with channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). For full interference channel without CSIT, the DoF region has been obtained in previous work except for a special case M1< N1<min(M2,N2), where M_i and N_i are the number of transmit and receive antennas of user i, respectively. We show that for this case the DoF regions of…
In this paper, an efficient transmit beam design and user scheduling method is proposed for multi-user (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) downlink, based on Pareto-optimality. The proposed beam design and user scheduling method groups simultaneously-served users into multiple clusters with practical two users in each cluster, and then applies spatical zeroforcing (ZF) across clusters to control inter-cluster interference (ICI) and Pareto-optimal beam design with successive interference cancellation (SIC) to two users in each cluster to remove interfe…
We consider a multi-user (MU) multiple-input-single-output (MISO) downlink system with M single-antenna users and N transmit antennas with a nonlinear power amplifier (PA) at each antenna. Instead of emitting constant envelope (CE) signals from the antennas to have highly power efficient PAs, we relax the CE constraint and allow the transmit signals to have instantaneous power less than or equal to the available power at each PA. The PA power efficiency decreases but simulation results show that the same performance in terms of bit-error-ratio (BER) can be achieved with less transmitted power …
Rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) has been recognized as a promising and powerful multiple access (MA) scheme, non-orthogonal transmission framework and interference management strategy for 6G. Inspired by the appealing spectral efficiency gain achieved by RSMA over conventional MA schemes in multi-user multi-antenna transmission, in this paper we introduce RSMA to reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided multiple-input single-out (MISO) broadcast channel (BC). To further enhance the spectral efficiency, a more generalized RIS architecture called fully connected RIS is considered. By…
Large-scale distributed-antenna system (L-DAS) with very large number of distributed antennas, possibly up to a few hundred antennas, is considered. A few major issues of the L-DAS, such as high latency, energy consumption, computational complexity, and large feedback (signaling) overhead, are identified. The potential capability of the L-DAS is illuminated in terms of an energy efficiency (EE) throughout the paper. We firstly and generally model the power consumption of an L-DAS, and formulate an EE maximization problem. To tackle two crucial issues, namely the huge computational complexity a…
In this paper, the large-scale MU-MIMO system is considered where a base station (BS) with extremely large number of antennas (N) serves relatively less number of users (K). In order to achieve largest sum rate, it is proven that the amount of users must be limited such that the number of antennas at the BS is preponderant over that of the antennas at all the users. In other words, the antennas at the BS should be excess. The extra antennas at the BS are no longer just an optional approach to enhance the system performance but the prerequisite to the largest sum rate. Based on this factor, for…
Despite the common belief that substantial capacity gains can be achieved by using more antennas at the base-station (BS) side in cellular networks, the effect of BS antenna topology on the capacity scaling behavior is little understood. In this paper, we present a comparative study on the ergodic capacity of a downlink single-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system where BS antennas are either co-located at the center or grouped into uniformly distributed antenna clusters in a circular cell. By assuming that the number of BS antennas and the number of user antennas go to infinity wi…

We consider the multiplexing gain (MUXG) of the fully connected K-user line-of-sight (LOS) interference channels (ICs). A polarimetric antenna composed of 3 orthogonal electric dipoles and 3 orthogonal magnetic dipoles is considered where all 6 dipoles are co-located. In case of K-user IC with single polarization, the maximum achievable MUXG is K regardless of the number of transmit and receive antennas because of the key-hole effect. With polarization, a trivial upper bound on the MUXG is 2K. We propose a zero forcing (ZF) scheme for the K-user LOS IC, where each user uses one or more polarim…
This paper studies a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system where its access points (APs) and users are equipped with multiple antennas. Two transmission protocols are considered. In the first transmission protocol, there are no downlink pilots, while in the second transmission protocol, downlink pilots are proposed in order to improve the system performance. In both transmission protocols, the users use the minimum mean-squared error-based successive interference cancellation (MMSE-SIC) scheme to detect the desired signals. For the analysis, we first derive a general s…
We investigate the problem of antenna selection (AS) in full-duplex (FD) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems, where a multi-antenna FD relay assists transmission from a multi-antenna base station (BS) to a far user, while at the same, the BS transmits to a near user. Specifically, based on the end-to-end signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the near and far users, two AS schemes to select a single transmit antenna at both the BS and the relay, respectively, as well as a single receive antenna at relay are proposed. In order to study the ergodic sum rate and outage p…
The cost of radio frequency (RF) chains is the biggest drawback of massive MIMO millimeter wave networks. By employing spatial modulation (SM), it is possible to implement lower number of RF chains than transmit antennas but still achieve high spectral efficiency. In this work, we propose a system model of the SM scheme together with hybrid beamforming at the transmitter and digital combining at the receiver. In the proposed model, spatially-modulated bits are mapped onto indices of antenna arrays. It is shown that the proposed model achieves approximately 5dB gain over classical multi-user SM…
In this paper, we analyze the achievable rate of the uplink of a single-cell multi-user distributed massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) system. The multiple users are equipped with single antenna and the base station (BS) is equipped with a large number of distributed antennas. We derive an analytical expression for the asymptotic ergodic achievable rate of the system under zero-forcing (ZF) detector. In particular, we consider circular antenna array, where the distributed BS antennas are located evenly on a circle, and derive an analytical expression and closed-form tight bounds for…
In practical mobile communication engineering applications, surfaces of antenna array deployment regions are usually uneven. Therefore, massive multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) communication systems usually transmit wireless signals by irregular antenna arrays. To evaluate the performance of irregular antenna arrays, the matrix correlation coefficient and ergodic received gain are defined for massive MIMO communication systems with mutual coupling effects. Furthermore, the lower bound of the ergodic achievable rate, symbol error rate (SER) and average outage probability are firstly derived for …
We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) regions of two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Z and full interference channels in this paper. We assume that the receivers always have perfect channel state information. We first derive the DoF region of Z interference channel with channel state information at transmitter (CSIT). For full interference channel without CSIT, the DoF region has been fully characterized recently and it is shown that the previously known outer bound is not achievable. In this work, we investigate the no-CSIT case further by assuming that the transmitter has the abil…
