Using deep Chandra and optical spectroscopic observations, we investigate an intriguing, young massive group, RXJ1648.7+6109, at z=0.376, and we combine these observations with previous measurements to fit the scaling relations of intermediate-redshift groups and poor clusters. RXJ1648 appears to be in an early stage of formation; while it follows X-ray scaling relations, its X-ray emission is highly elongated and it lacks a central, dominant BCG. Instead, RXJ1648 contains a central string of seven bright galaxies, which have a smaller velocity dispersion, are on average brighter, and have less star formation (lower EW([OII]) and EW(H_delta)) than other group galaxies. The 4-5 brightest galaxies in this string should sink to the center and merge through dynamical friction by z=0, forming a BCG consistent with a system of RXJ1648's mass even if 5-50% of the light is lost to an intracluster light component (ICL). The L_X-T_X relation for intermediate-redshift groups/poor clusters is very similar to the low-redshift cluster relation and consistent with the low-redshift group relation. In contrast, the L_X-sigma_v and sigma_v-T_X relations reveal that intermediate-redshift groups/poor clusters have significantly lower velocity dispersions for their X-ray properties compared to low-redshift systems, however the intermediate-redshift relations are currently limited to a small range in luminosity.
We present deep observations taken with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys of the central massive galaxy in a forming cluster at z=2.2. The galaxy hosting the powerful radio source MRC 1138-262 is associated with one of the most extensive merger systems known in the early universe. Our HST/ACS image shows many star-forming galaxies merging within a ~200 kpc region that emits both diffuse line emission and continuum in the rest-frame UV. Because this galaxy lives in an overdense environment, it represents a rare view of a brightest cluster galaxy in formation at z>2 which may serve as a testbe…
We have obtained a new high-resolution K'-band image of the central region of the rich X-ray cluster RX J0848.9+4452 at z=1.26. We found that the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the cluster is clearly separated into two distinct objects. Whereas the optical to near-infrared colors of the objects are consistent with the predictions of passive evolution models for galaxies formed at high redshift, the luminosities of the two galaxies are both considerably fainter than predicted by passive evolution of BCG's in low and intermediate redshift clusters. We argue that this is evidence of an on-goin…
We present new (B,I) photometry for the globular cluster systems in eight Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCGs), obtained with the ACS/WFC camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. In the very rich cluster systems that reside within these giant galaxies, we find that all have strongly bimodal color distributions All the BCGs show population gradients, with much higher relative numbers of red clusters within 5 kpc of their centers, consistent with their having formed at later times than the blue, metal-poor population. A striking new feature of the color distributions emerging from our data is that for…
We present a multiwavelength study of the poor cluster RX J1117.4+0743 ([VMF 98] 097) at z=0.485, based on GMOS/Gemini South g', r' photometry and spectroscopy, and XMM-Newton observations. We examine its nature and surroundings by analyzing the projected galaxy distribution, the galaxy velocity distribution, the weak-lensing mass reconstruction, and the X-ray spectroscopy and imaging. The cluster shows a complex morphology. It is composed by at least two structures along the line-of-sight, with velocity dispersions of 592+-82 km s^-1 and 391+-85 km s^-1 respectively. Other structures are also…
We have examined the orientations of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in poor MKW and AWM clusters and find that, like their counterparts in richer Abell clusters, poor cluster BCGs exhibit a strong propensity to be aligned with the principal axes of their host clusters as well as the surrounding distribution of nearby (< 20/h Mpc) Abell clusters. The processes responsible for dominant galaxy alignments are therefore independent of cluster richness. We argue that these alignments most likely arise from anisotropic infall of material into clusters along large-scale filaments.
Current models of galaxy evolution suggest that feedback from active galactic nuclei is needed to explain the high-luminosity cutoff in the galaxy luminosity function. Exactly how an AGN outflow couples with the ambient medium and suppresses star formation remains poorly understood. However, we have recently uncovered an important clue to how that coupling might work. Observations of H-alpha emission and blue light from the universe's most luminous galaxies, which occupy the centers of galaxy clusters, show that star formation happens only if the minimum specific entropy of the intracluster ga…
We report the discovery of a new bright quasar PHL 1811 as part of a followup program to identify bright quasars in the FIRST radio survey. With B=13.9, R=13.9, and z=0.192, this quasar is now the second brightest quasar (in apparent magnitude) known beyond z=0.1. Optically classified as a Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy (NLS1), PHL 1811 is unusual for an object in this class in that it was not detected in X-rays in the ROSAT All Sky survey or in any previous X-ray survey. A follow-up BeppoSAX observation confirms that it is deficient in X-rays compared with other quasars, but poor signal to nois…
We present a chemical composition analysis of a sample of 20 giant branch stars in the "CN-bimodal" globular cluster M4 observed using high resolution echelle spectrographs at Lick & McDonald Observatories. M4, a mildly metal-poor ([Fe/H] ~ -1.1) globular cluster, is the nearest, brightest, and one of the most accessible targets to study the CN-bimodal phenomena. The abundance analysis includes elements Fe, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, and Ni as well as elements that are diagnostics of proton-capture nucleosynthesis, O, Na, Mg, and Al, in addition to r-process and s-process elements, Eu and Ba.
This paper concerns the K band Hubble diagram for the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of X-ray clusters covering the redshift range $0.05<z<0.8$. We show that BCGs in clusters of high X-ray luminosity are excellent standard candles: the intrinsic dispersion in the raw K band absolute magnitudes of BCGs in clusters with $L_{\rm X} > 2.3 \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ (in the 0.3 - 3.5 keV band) is no more than 0.22 mag, and is not significantly reduced by correcting for the BCG structure parameter, $α$, or for X-ray luminosity. This is the smallest scatter in the absolute magnitudes…
We analyze the ASCA spectra accumulated within ~100 kpc radii of 12 of the brightest groups of galaxies. Upon fitting isothermal models (1T) jointly to the ASCA SIS and GIS spectra we obtain fits for most groups that are of poor or at best marginal quality and give very sub-solar metallicities similar to previous studies, <Z> = 0.29 +/- 0.12 Z_sun. Two-temperature models (2T) provide significantly better fits for 11 out of the 12 groups and in every case have metallicities that are substantially larger than obtained for the 1T models, <Z> = 0.75 +/- 0.24 Z_sun. Although not very well constrain…
We present the first X-ray Luminosity Function (XLF) for an optically-selected sample of 49 nearby poor clusters of galaxies and a sample of 67 Abell clusters with z < 0.15. We have extended the measured cluster XLF by more than a factor of 10 in X-ray luminosity. Our poor cluster sample was drawn from an optical catalog of groups with 0.01<z<0.03 composed of Zwicky galaxies. The X-ray emission was measured from the ROSAT all-sky survey. About 45% of the poor clusters were detected with 0.5-2.0 keV luminosities from (1.7-65)x 10^{41} h^{-2} ergs/sec. These are among the X-ray brightest, optica…
We present new results from optical spectroscopy of the brightest Hii region in the dwarf irregular galaxy UKS 1927-177 in Sagittarius (SagDIG). From high signal-to-noise spectra, reddening-corrected line flux ratios have been measured with typical uncertainties of a few percent, from which the oxygen abundance is rediscussed, and new abundance estimates are derived for N and Ne. The O abundance in SagDIG, estimated with the empirical abundance indicator R23 and other methods, is in the range 12+log(O/H)=7.26 to 7.50. The fact that SagDIG is ~10 times closer than IZw18 makes it an ideal target…
We use multi-fiber spectroscopy of 12 nearby, poor groups of galaxies to address whether the groups are bound systems or chance projections of galaxies along the line-of-sight, why the members of each group have not already merged to form a single galaxy, despite the groups' high galaxy densities, short crossing times, and likely environments for galaxy-galaxy mergers, and how galaxies might evolve in these groups, where the collisional effects of the intra-group gas and the tidal influences of the global potential are weaker than in rich clusters. We conclude the following. (1) The nine group…
We create a catalogue of simulated fossil groups and study their properties, in particular the merging histories of their first-ranked galaxies. We compare the simulated fossil group properties with those of both simulated non-fossil and observed fossil groups. Using simulations and a mock galaxy catalogue, we searched for massive ($>$ 5 $\times$ 10$^{13} h^{-1} {\cal M}_\odot$) fossil groups in the Millennium Simulation Galaxy Catalogue. In addition, attempted to identify observed fossil groups in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 using identical selection criteria. Our predictions …
And IV is a low-surface brightness (LSB) dwarf galaxy at the distance of 6.1 Mpc, projecting close to M 31. In this paper the results of spectroscopy of And IV the two brightest HII regions with the SAO 6-m telescope (BTA) are presented. In both of them the faint line [OIII]4363 was detected that allowed us to determine their O/H by the classical T_e method. Their values of 12+log(O/H) are equal to 7.49+-0.06 and 7.55+-0.23, respectively. The comparison of these direct O/H determinations with the two most reliable semi-empirical and empirical methods shows their good consistency. For And IV ab…
We have obtained 21cm images of 19 spiral galaxies in the Coma cluster, using the VLA in its C and D configurations. The sample selection was based on morphology, brightness, and optical diameters of galaxies within one Abell radius (1.2 degrees). The HI detected, yet deficient galaxies show a strong correlation in their HI properties with projected distance from the cluster center. The most strongly HI deficient (HI Def > 0.4) galaxies are located inside a radius of 30 arcmin (aprox 0.6 Mpc) from the center of Coma, roughly the extent of the central X-ray emission. These central galaxies show…
Recent evidence on the metal content of the high-redshift Lyman alpha forest seen in quasar spectra suggests that an early generation of galaxies enriched the intergalactic medium (IGM) at z ~ 5. We calculate the number of supernovae that need to have taken place to produce the observed metallicity. The progenitor stars of the supernovae should have emitted $\sim 20$ ionizing photons for each baryon in the universe, i.e., more than enough to ionize the IGM. We calculate that the rate of these supernovae is such that about one of them should be observable at any time per square arc minute. Thei…
We report on the population of point sources discovered during an 18.5 ksec Chandra ACIS-S observation of the Sombrero Galaxy. We present the luminosity function, the spectra of the 6 brightest sources, consider correlations with globular clusters (GCs) and with planetary nebulae (PNe), and study the galaxy's population of SSSs. We detected 122 sources, 22 of them are identified as luminous supersoft X-ray sources (SSSs). There is an over density of SSSs within 1.5 kpc of the nucleus, which is itself the brightest X-ray source. SSSs are also found in the disk and halo, with 1 SSS in a globular…
We present a possible star formation and chemical evolutionary history for two early-type galaxies NGC 1407 and NGC 1400. They are the two brightest galaxies of the NGC 1407 (or Eridanus-A) group, one of the 60 groups studied as part of the Group Evolution Multi-wavelength Study (GEMS). Our analysis is based on new high signal-to-noise spatially resolved integrated spectra obtained at the ESO 3.6m telescope, out to 0.6 (NGC 1407) and 1.3 (NGC 1400) effective radii. Using Lick/IDS indices we estimate luminosity-weighted ages, metallicities and $α$-element abundance ratios. Colour radial distrib…
Many strong gravitational lenses lie in complex environments, such as poor groups of galaxies, that significantly bias conclusions from lens analyses. We are undertaking a photometric survey of all known galaxy-mass strong lenses to characterize their environments and include them in careful lens modeling, and to build a large, uniform sample of galaxy groups at intermediate redshifts for evolutionary studies. In this paper we present wide-field photometry of the environments of twelve lens systems with 0.24 < z_lens < 0.5. Using a red-sequence identifying technique, we find that eight of the …
Moderately deep near-infrared images are used to investigate the photometric properties and spatial distribution of bright giants near the centers of the core-collapsed globular clusters NGC5946 and NGC7099. The former cluster is located at a low Galactic latitude and is heavily reddened; nevertheless, the K, J-K color-magnitude diagram (CMD) shows a well-defined giant branch, with a width +/- 0.05 magnitudes in J-K. Most of the observed width is due to differential reddening. The upper giant branch is relatively steep, and comparisons with less reddened clusters indicate that (1) NGC5946 must…
We report the results of the spatial analysis of deep ROSAT HRI observations, optical imaging and spectroscopy, and high-resolution VLA H I and continuum imaging of NGC 1961 and NGC 2276. These spirals were selected as showing some previous evidence for interaction with a surrounding (hot) diffuse medium. Our results favor most aspects of these galaxies as being shaped by gravitational interactions with companions, rather than the asymmetric pressure from motion through an external medium. The old stars follow the asymmetric structures of young stars and ionized gas, which suggests a tidal ori…
We present an analysis of low mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) and globular clusters (GCs) in five galaxies using Chandra, and HST data. Of the 186 LMXBs within the optical fields 71 are in GCs, confirming that LMXBs are formed particularly efficiently in GCs. However, there is no statistically significant correlation between the distance of a GC from the center of its host galaxy and its LMXB hosting probability. Metal-rich GCs are 3.4 times more likely to host LMXBs than metal-poor ones. Intriguingly, the LMXBs in NGC 1399 are preferentially in the reddest GCs of the metal-rich subsystem. This in…
We present a study of the nearby post-merger giant elliptical galaxy, NGC 5128 (Centaurus A), in which we use the properties of its globular cluster (GC) and planetary nebula (PN) systems to constrain its evolution. Using photometric and spectroscopic data for 215 GCs presented in Paper I, we study trends in age, metallicity, and kinematics for the GC system. We confirm that the GC metallicity distribution is bimodal, and show that these two sub-populations have different properties. Using spectral line index measurements of the brightest clusters, the metal-poor GCs have old ages like the Mil…
We present deep HST ACS images of the post-starburt shell galaxy AM 0139-655. We find evidence for the presence of three distinct globular cluster subpopulations associated with this galaxy: a centrally concentrated young population (~ 0.4 Gyr), an intermediate age population (~ 1 Gyr) and an old, metal-poor population similar to that seen around normal galaxies. The g-I color distribution of the clusters is bimodal with peaks at 0.85 and 1.35. The redder peak at g-I=1.35 is consistent with the predicted color for an old metal-poor population. The clusters associated with the peak at g-I=0.85 …
We have identified a complex galaxy cluster system in the COSMOS field via a wide angle tail (WAT) radio galaxy consistent with the idea that WAT galaxies can be used as tracers of clusters. The WAT galaxy, CWAT-01, is coincident with an elliptical galaxy resolved in the HST-ACS image. Using the COSMOS multiwavelength data set, we derive the radio properties of CWAT-01 and use the optical and X-ray data to investigate its host environment. The cluster hosting CWAT-01 is part of a larger assembly consisting of a minimum of four X-ray luminous clusters within ~2 Mpc distance. We apply hydrodynam…
The Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain WFPC2 (V,I) photometry for a large sample of stars in the outer halo of the giant elliptical NGC 5128 (d = 4 Mpc). The globular cluster N5128-C44, at the center of the Planetary Camera field, is well enough resolved to permit the construction of a color-magnitude diagram (CMD) for it which covers the brightest two magnitudes of the giant branch. The CMD is consistent with that of a normal old, moderately low-metallicity ([Fe/H] = -1.30 globular cluster, distinctly more metal-poor than most of the field halo stars at the same projected location…
A detailed imaging analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of the Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594) has been accomplished using a six-image mosaic from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. The quality of the data is such that contamination by foreground stars and background galaxies is negligible for all but the faintest 5% of the GC luminosity function (GCLF). This enables the study of an effectively pure sample of 659 GCs until ~2 mags fainter than the turnover magnitude, which occurs at M_V=-7.60+/-0.06 for an assumed m-M=29.77. Two GC metallicity subpopulations are easily …
We present evidence that some of the compact, luminous, young star clusters recently discovered through images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have masses comparable to those of old Galactic globular clusters. The "super star cluster" in the center of the nearby amorphous galaxy NGC 1705 has been observed with high dispersion at optical wavelengths using the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck 10 m telescope. Numerous weak metal lines arising from the atmospheres of cool supergiants have been detected in the integrated spectrum, permitting a direct measurement of the line-of-sig…
Slit spectra, covering the rest frame near-ultraviolet and blue wavelength regions, are combined with moderately deep g and R images to investigate radial population gradients in the brightest components of six z=0.2 galaxy clusters selected by x-ray brightness. We conclude that the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) of the EMSS0440+02, EMSS0906+11 and EMSS1231+15 clusters have global stellar contents resembling nearby elliptical galaxies. The BCGs in the clusters EMSS0839+29, EMSS1455+22 and Abell2390 are complicated by ionized gas, which is detected over large portions of all three systems. R…
We present a CFH12K wide field survey of the carbon star population in and around NGC 3109. Carbon stars, the brightest members of the intermediate-age population, were found nearly exclusively in and near the disk of NGC 3109, ruling out the existence of an extensive intermediate-age halo like the one found in NGC 6822. Over 400 carbon stars identified have < M_I > = -4.71, confirming the nearly universality of mean magnitude of C star populations in Local Group galaxies. Star counts over the field reveal that NGC 3109 is a truncated disk shaped galaxy without an extensive stellar halo. The m…
We present results from two high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of proto-cluster regions at z~2.1. The simulations have been compared to observational results for the socalled Spiderweb galaxy system, the core of a putative proto-cluster region at z = 2.16, found around a radio galaxy. The simulated regions have been chosen so as to form a poor cluster with M200~10^14 h-1 Msun (C1) and a rich cluster with M200~2x10^15 h-1 Msun (C2) at z = 0. The simulated proto-clusters show evidence of ongoing assembly of a dominating central galaxy. The stellar mass of the brightest cluster galaxy (BC…
This series of papers explores the evolution of late-type galaxies in the rich cluster Abell 85. Here, we revisit the complex dynamical state of A 85 by using independent methods. We analyze the redshift distribution towards the cluster out to 40,000 km/s, and determine the mean redshifts of the background clusters A 87 and A 89. We then search for substructures in A 85 by considering the 2-D galaxy distribution for its members and by applying the kinematical 3-D Delta-test to both projected positions and radial velocities. This clearly reveals several substructures that we describe. We also a…
(Abridged) We present the results of M31 globular cluster (GC) X-ray source survey, based on the data of XMM-Newton and Chandra observations covering ~6100 sq.arcmin of M31. We detected 43 X-ray sources coincident with globular cluster candidates from optical surveys. The estimated isotropic X-ray luminosities of GC sources lie between ~10e35 and ~10e39 erg/s in the 0.3 - 10 keV energy band. The spectral properties and variability of M31 GC X-ray sources are consistent with that derived for the LMXBs in the bulges of M31 and Milky Way. We found that ~80% of the M31 GC sources with multiple flu…
We present the first high spatial resolution X-ray study of the massive star forming region NGC 6357, obtained in a 38 ks Chandra/ACIS observation. Inside the brightest constituent of this large HII region complex is the massive open cluster Pismis 24. It contains two of the brightest and bluest stars known, yet remains poorly studied; only a handful of optically bright stellar members have been identified. We investigate the cluster extent and Initial Mass Function and detect ~800 X-ray sources with a limiting sensitivity of 10^{30} ergs s^{-1}; this provides the first reliable probe of the r…
This study follows a recent analysis of the galaxy luminosity functions and colour-magnitude red sequences in the Coma cluster (Adami et al. 2007). We analyze here the distribution of very faint galaxies and globular clusters in an east-west strip of $\sim 42 \times 7$ arcmin$^2$ crossing the Coma cluster center (hereafter the CS strip) down to the unprecedented faint absolute magnitude of M$_R \sim -9.5$. This work is based on deep images obtained at the CFHT with the CFH12K camera in the B, R, and I bands. The analysis shows that the observed properties strongly depend on the environment, an…
Using HST and Spitzer IRAC imaging, we report the discovery of a very bright strongly lensed Lyman break galaxy (LBG) candidate at z~7.6 in the field of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 1689. The galaxy candidate, which we refer to as A1689-zD1, shows a strong z-J break of at least 2.2 mag and is completely undetected (<1 sigma) in HST/ACS g, r, i, and z-band data. These properties, combined with the very blue J-H and H-[4.5] colors, are exactly the properties of an z~7.6 LBG and can only be reasonably fit by a star-forming galaxy at z=7.6 +/- 0.4. Attempts to reproduce these properties with a…
We investigate the galaxy populations in seven X-ray selected, intermediate-redshift groups (0.2<z<0.6). Overall, the galaxy populations in these systems are similar to those in clusters at the same redshift; they have large fractions of early-type galaxies (f_e~70%) and small fractions of galaxies with significant star formation (f_[OII]~30%). We do not observe a strong evolution in the galaxy populations from those seen in X-ray luminous groups at low-redshift. Both f_e and f_[OII] are correlated with radius but do not reach the field value out to ~r_500. However, we find significant variati…
An important test for models of galaxy formation lies in the metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) of spheroid stars and their globular clusters (GCs).We have compared the MDFs obtained from spectroscopy of the GCs and the star-by-star photometry of red giants in the nearby elliptical NGC 5128, with the predictions of a semi-analytic galaxy formation model. We have selected model ellipticals comparable in luminosity and environment to NGC 5128, and derived their MDFs. A direct comparison between models and data shows that the MDFs are qualitatively similar, both have stellar components whi…
We have measured radial velocities for 196 globular clusters (GCs) around M49, the brightest member of the Virgo Cluster. Combined with published data, they bring the total number of GCs with measured radial velocities in this galaxy to 263. Using this sample, we extract the projected kinematics of the full sample of GCs, and of the separate metal-poor and metal-rich subsamples. In agreement with previous results for the global GC kinematics based on smaller datasets, we find that the GC system as a whole exhibits a slow overall rotation that is due almost entirely to a net rotation of the met…
