We present deep HST ACS images of the post-starburt shell galaxy AM 0139-655. We find evidence for the presence of three distinct globular cluster subpopulations associated with this galaxy: a centrally concentrated young population (~ 0.4 Gyr), an intermediate age population (~ 1 Gyr) and an old, metal-poor population similar to that seen around normal galaxies. The g-I color distribution of the clusters is bimodal with peaks at 0.85 and 1.35. The redder peak at g-I=1.35 is consistent with the predicted color for an old metal-poor population. The clusters associated with the peak at g-I=0.85 are centrally concentrated and interpreted as a younger and more metal-rich population. We suggest that these clusters have an age of ~ 0.4 Gyr and solar metallicity based on a comparison with population synthesis models. The luminosity function of these "blue" clusters is well represented by a power law. Interestingly, the brightest shell associated with the galaxy harbors some of the youngest clusters observed. This seems to indicate that the same merger event was responsible for the formation of both the shells and the young clusters. The red part of the color distribution contains several very bright clusters, which are not expected for an old, metal-poor population. Furthermore, the luminosity function of the "red" GCs cannot be fit well by either a single gaussian or a single power law. A composite (gaussian + power law) fit to the LF of the red clusters yields both a low rms and very plausible properties for an old population plus an intermediate-age population of GCs. Hence, we suggest that the red clusters in AM 0139-655 consist of two distinct GC subpopulations, one being an old, metal-poor population as seen in normal galaxies and one having formed during a recent dissipative galaxy merger.
Bimodality is a common feature of globular cluster (GC) color distributions in galaxies. Although it is well known that the GC system of the Milky Way is bimodal in metallicity, this has yet to be directly demonstrated for an elliptical galaxy. We use Lick index measurements from the literature to derive metallicities for 47 GCs in the giant Virgo elliptical galaxy NGC 4472. The resulting distribution shows clear evidence for two metallicity subpopulations of GCs.
Relative ages for the globular cluster (GC) subpopulations in the Virgo giant elliptical galaxy M87 (NGC 4486) have been determined from Stroemgren photometry obtained with WFPC2 on board HST. Using a variety of population synthesis models, and assuming the GC mass at the turnover of the luminosity function is the same for both subpopulations, differential ages have been determined from the observed magnitudes at the turnover of the globular cluster luminosity function and from the mean color of each subpopulation. We measure an age difference between the two subpopulations of 0.2 +/- 1.5 (sys…
New and archival HST images of the globular cluster systems of 17 relatively nearby galaxies and 6 more distant galaxies have been used to establish the characteristics of GC subpopulations over a range of host galaxy morphological type from E5 to Sa. GC color/metallicity, size and luminosity distributions have been examined in the nearby galaxies and color distributions have been determined for the more distant sample. Correlations with parent galaxy properties and trends with galactocentric radius have been explored. Supplemented with Keck spectroscopy, our results are best explained by an i…
We present wide area UBRI photometry for globular clusters around the Leo group galaxy NGC 3379. Globular cluster candidates are selected from their B-band magnitudes and their (U-B)o vs (B-I)o colours. A colour-colour selection region was defined from photometry of the Milky Way and M31 globular cluster systems. We detect 133 globular cluster candidates which, supports previous claims of a low specific frequency for NGC 3379. The Milky Way and M31 reveal blue and red subpopulations, with (U-B)o and (B-I)o colours indicating mean metallicities similar to those expected based on previous spectr…
A large number of early type galaxies are now known to possess blue and red subpopulations of globular clusters. We have compiled a database of 28 such galaxies exhibiting bimodal globular cluster colour distributions. After converting to a common V-I colour system, we investigate correlations between the mean colour of the blue and red subpopulations with galaxy velocity dispersion. We support previous claims that the mean colour of the blue globular clusters are unrelated to their host galaxy. They must have formed rather independently of the galaxy potential they now inhabit. The mean blue …
We present HST photometry and Keck spectroscopy of globular clusters (GCs) in the nearby S0 galaxy NGC 7457. The V-I color-magnitude diagram of GCs lacks the clear bimodality present in most early-type galaxies; there may be a significant population of intermediate-color objects. Of 13 spectroscopically-observed GCs, two are unusually metal-rich and feature bright [O III] emission lines. We conclude that one probably hosts a planetary nebula and the other a supernova remnant. Such emission line objects should be more common in an intermediate-age stellar population than in an old one. We there…
We present an analysis of a 50 orbit HST ACS observation of the M87 globular cluster system. We use the extraordinary depth of this dataset to test whether the colors and magnitudes show evidence for a mass-metallicity relation in globular cluster populations. We find only a weak or absent relation between the colors and magnitudes of the metal poor subpopulation of globular clusters. The weakness or absence of a color-magnitude relation is established over a wide range in luminosity from $M_V=-11$ to $M_V=-6$, encompassing most of the M87 globular clusters. The constancy of the colors of the …
Globular cluster (GC) systems have now been studied in galaxies ranging from dwarfs to giants and spanning the full Hubble sequence of morphological types. Imaging and spectroscopy with the Hubble Space Telescope and large ground-based telescopes have together established that most galaxies have bimodal color distributions that reflect two subpopulations of old GCs: metal-poor and metal-rich. The characteristics of both subpopulations are correlated with those of their parent galaxies. We argue that metal-poor GCs formed in low-mass dark matter halos in the early universe and that their proper…
Representing single stellar populations, globular clusters (GCs) are relatively easy to model, thus providing powerful tools for studying the evolution of galaxies. This has been demonstrated for the blue compact galaxy ESO338-IG04. GC systems in galaxies may be fossils of starbursts and mergers. Thus studies of GCs in the local universe may add to our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies and the distant universe.
We propose and investigate a new formation mechanism for globular clusters in which they form within molecular clouds that are formed in the shocked regions created by galactic winds driven by successive supernova explosions shortly after the initial burst of massive star formation in the galactic centers. The globular clusters have a radial distribution that is more extended than that of the stars because the clusters form as pressure-confined condensations in a shell that is moving outward radially at high velocity. In addition the model is consistent with existing observations of other glob…
Numerical simulations of a Milky Way-size galaxy demonstrate that globular clusters with the properties similar to observed can form naturally at z > 3 in the concordance Lambda-CDM cosmology. The clusters in our model form in the strongly baryon-dominated cores of supergiant molecular clouds. The first clusters form at z = 12, while the peak formation appears to be at z = 3-5. The zero-age mass function of globular clusters can be approximated by a power-law dN/dM ~ M^-2, in agreement with observations of young massive star clusters.
High signal-to-noise, low-resolution spectra have been obtained for 22 globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 4365. Some of these were selected as probable representatives of an intermediate-age (2-5 Gyr), extremely metal-rich GC subpopulation. The presence of such a subpopulation had been inferred from the unusual optical and near-IR color distributions of GCs in this otherwise typical Virgo elliptical galaxy. However, ages derived from Lick indices are consistent with uniformly old mean ages for all GCs in our sample. The metallicities of the clusters show some evidence for a trimodal distribution. …
This paper explores the quantitative connection between globular clusters and the diffuse stellar population of the galaxies they are associated with. Both NGC 1399 and NGC 4486 (M87) are well suited for this kind of analysis due to their large globular cluster populations. The main assumption of our Monte Carlo based models is that each globular cluster is formed along with a given diffuse stellar mass that shares the same spatial distribution, chemical composition and age. The main globular clusters subpopulations, that determine the observed bimodal colour distribution, are decomposed avoid…
We present the results of a meta-analysis of Keck spectra of extragalactic globular clusters (GCs) in a sample of eight galaxies, ranging from dwarfs to massive ellipticals. We infer ages for the metal-poor and metal-rich GCs in these galaxies through comparisons to Galactic GCs. Both subpopulations appear to be no younger than their Galactic counterparts, with ages ~> 10 Gyr. This is the largest sample of galaxies for which ages have been constrained spectroscopically. Our results support the formation of most GCs in massive galaxies at high redshift. We propose a scenario for the formation o…
The presence of two globular cluster subpopulations in early-type galaxies is now the norm rather than the exception. Here we present two more examples for which the host galaxy appears to have undergone a recent merger. Using multi-colour Keck imaging of NGC 1052 and NGC 7332 we find evidence for a bimodal globular cluster colour distribution in both galaxies, with roughly equal numbers of blue and red globular clusters. The blue ones have similar colours to those in the Milky Way halo and are thus probably very old and metal-poor. If the red GC subpopulations are at least solar metallicity, …
We examine the correlation between globular cluster (GC) color and magnitude using HST/ACS imaging for a sample of 79 early-type galaxies (-21.7<M_B<-15.2 mag) with accurate SBF distances from the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey. Using the KMM mixture modeling algorithm, we find a highly significant correlation, d(g-z)/dz = -0.037 +- 0.004, between color and magnitude for the subpopulation of blue GCs in the co-added GC color-magnitude diagram of the three brightest Virgo galaxies (M49, M87 and M60): brighter GCs are redder than their fainter counterparts. For the single GC systems of M87 and M60, we…
A detailed imaging analysis of the globular cluster (GC) system of the Sombrero galaxy (NGC 4594) has been accomplished using a six-image mosaic from the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys. The quality of the data is such that contamination by foreground stars and background galaxies is negligible for all but the faintest 5% of the GC luminosity function (GCLF). This enables the study of an effectively pure sample of 659 GCs until ~2 mags fainter than the turnover magnitude, which occurs at M_V=-7.60+/-0.06 for an assumed m-M=29.77. Two GC metallicity subpopulations are easily …
We present wide-field Keck telescope imaging of the globular cluster (GC) systems around NGC 1407 and NGC 1400 in the Eridanus galaxy cloud. This is complemented by Hubble Space Telescope images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys of NGC 1407 and Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 images of NGC 1400. We clearly detect bimodality in the GC colour distribution of NGC 1407. The blue GC subpopulation has a mean colour of B-I = 1.61 and a relative contribution of around 40%, whereas the red subpopulation with B-I = 2.06 contributes 60% to the overall GC system. Assuming old ages, this corresponds t…
The Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1399 and NGC 1404 are ideal for studying the effects of a cluster environment on globular cluster systems. Here we present new optical imaging of these two galaxies from both the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 and the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory's 1.5m telescope. The combination of both data sets provides unique insight on the spatial and colour distribution of globular clusters. From B-I colours, we find that both galaxies have a broad globular cluster metallicity distribution that is inconsistent with a single population…
Several recent studies have reported a mean size difference of about 20% between the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopulations of globular clusters (GCs) in a variety of galaxies. In this paper we investigate the possibility that the size difference might be a projection effect, resulting from a correlation between cluster size and galactocentric distance, combined with different radial distributions of the GC subpopulations. We find that projection effects may indeed account for a size difference similar to the observed one, provided that there is a steep relation between GC size and galactoce…
Here we test the idea that new globular clusters (GCs) are formed in the same gaseous ("wet") mergers or interactions that give rise to the young stellar populations seen in the central regions of many early-type galaxies. We compare mean GC colors with the age of the central galaxy starburst. The red GC subpopulation reveals remarkably constant mean colors independent of galaxy age. A scenario in which the red GC subpopulation is a combination of old and new GCs (formed in the same event as the central galaxy starburst) can not be ruled out; although this would require an age-metallicity rela…
Recent HST/ACS images of M82 covering the entire galaxy have been used to detect star clusters. The galaxy is known to contain a young population (age < 10 Myr) in its starburst nucleus, surrounded by a post-starburst disk of age < 1 Gyr. We detect more than 650 star clusters in this galaxy, nearly 400 of them in the post-starburst disk. These data have been used to derive the luminosity, mass and size functions separately for the young nuclear, and intermediate-age disk clusters. In this contribution, we discuss the evolutionary status of these clusters, especially, on the chances of some of …
We investigate the distribution of stars along the Horizontal Branch of the Galactic globular cluster NGC1851, to shed light on the progeny of the two distinct Subgiant Branch populations harbored by this cluster. On the basis of detailed synthetic Horizontal Branch modelling, we conclude that the two subpopulations are distributed in different regions of the observed Horizontal Branch: the evolved stars belonging to the bright Subgiant branch component are confined in the red portion of the observed sequence, whereas the ones belonging to the faint Subgiant branch component are distributed fr…
We present a study of the globular cluster systems of four early-type poststarburst galaxies using deep g and I-band images from the ACS camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). All the galaxies feature shells distributed around their main bodies and are thus likely merger remnants. The color distribution of the globular clusters in all four galaxies shows a broad peak centered on g-I ~ 1.4, while PGC 6240 and PGC 42871 show a significant number of globular clusters with g-I ~ 1.0. The latter globular clusters are interpreted as being of age ~ 500 Myr and likely having been formed in th…
We observed the nearby starburst galaxy M82 in CO in the higher frequency (2--1) transition to achieve an angular resolution below 1 arc second or 17 pc at the target. We resolved the molecular gas into a large number of compact clouds, with masses ranging from about 2x10^3 to 2x10^6 solar masses. The mass spectrum scales as N(M) ~ M^-1.5, similar to the mass spectra of young massive star clusters suggesting that individual molecular clouds are transformed in the starburst into individual star clusters. The larger clouds are surrounded by supernovae and HII regions suggesting that star formati…
In this paper and a companion paper, we report on a wide-field imaging survey of the globular cluster (GC) populations around M87 carried out with Suprime-Cam on the 8.2m Subaru telescope. Here we describe the observations, data reduction, and data analysis and present luminosity functions of GC populations around M87 and NGC 4552, another luminous Virgo elliptical in our survey field. The imaging data were taken in the B, V, and I bands with a sky coverage out to 0.5 Mpc from the M87 centre. GC candidates were selected by applying a colour criterion on the B-V and V-I diagram to unresolved ob…
We explore the constraints on globular cluster formation provided by the observed conditions in starbursts where globulars are currently forming, and by the observed properties of young and old globular clusters. We note that the pressure in the ISM of starbursts and mergers implies that molecular clouds in these environments have radii similar to those of globular clusters. Such molecular clouds are therefore viable precursors to globular clusters if the star formation efficiency in the clouds is high. A high star formation efficiency may be a consequence of the high density and associated hi…
Multicolour images of the starbursting metal poor blue compact galaxy ESO338-IG04 have been obtained with WFPC2/HST. In the images we find numerous point-like sources concentrated towards the main body of the galaxy, which we identify as globular cluster candidates. We show that these objects are physically associated with the galaxy and that they are spatially extended. Given their high intrinsic luminosities, these objects cannot be individual stars. Using photometric evolution models we show that the objects constitute a rich population of massive star clusters with ages ranging from a few …
The colors of globular clusters in most of large elliptical galaxies are bimodal. This is generally taken as evidence for the presence of two cluster subpopulations that have different geneses. However, here we find that, because of the non-linear nature of the metallicity-to-color transformation, a coeval group of old clusters with a unimodal metallicity spread can exhibit color bimodality. The models of cluster colors indicate that the horizontal-branch stars are the main drivers behind the empirical non-linearity. We show that the scenario gives simple and cohesive explanations for all the …
We analyze high signal-to-noise spectra for 14 globular clusters (GCs) in the Sombrero galaxy, NGC 4594 = M104, obtained with the LRIS spectrograph on the Keck I telescope. We find generally good agreement between spectroscopic metallicities and previous photometric metallicities based on V-I colors. Further, we use measurements of various Balmer line indices on co-added spectra of metal-poor and metal-rich GCs to estimate ages for the GC subpopulations and find ages of 10-15 Gyr, with preferred ages around 11-12 Gyr and no detectable differences between the metal-rich and metal-poor subpopula…
We have obtained Keck spectra of six candidate globular clusters (GCs) in the dynamically young elliptical galaxy NGC 3610, supplementing our previous Keck spectra of eight confirmed GCs (Strader et al. 2003). Five of our new candidates are confirmed to be GCs. Of the thirteen GCs, eleven are located within the K band effective radius of 7 kpc. Two of these thirteen clusters are found to be young (~ 2 Gyr) and very metal-rich ([Z/H] ~ +0.5), three are old and metal-poor, and the remaining eight clusters are old and metal-rich. The ages of the young clusters are consistent with a recent spectro…
Star formation in starbursts appears to be biased toward compact clusters, with up to 20% of all stars formed in them. Observations with HST show that many of these clusters have luminosities (-9 > Mv > -16), UBVI colors, and half-light radii (R_eff = ~3 pc) consistent with their being young globular clusters. Although we know little about the long-term stability of the youngest clusters (<20 Myr), compact clusters older than ~10 core-crossing times (20 - 40 Myr) are bound gravitationally and very likely young globulars. The present review concentrates on recent progress achieved in dating suc…
We present high-resolution optical and near-infrared HST observations of two adjacent regions in the fossil starburst region in M82, B1 and B2. Age estimates date the cluster population in the fossil starburst between ~2 x 10^8 and ~10 x 10^9 years, assuming solar metallicity. The star cluster population in B2 is more heavily affected by internal extinction than that in B1. Although our cluster size estimates indicate that they are gravitationally bound, and not unlike Galactic globular clusters, their luminosity distribution is significantly fainter than both super star cluster luminosity fun…
Recent high-resolution observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) reveal that young star clusters of extraordinary luminosity and compactness ("super star clusters") are commonly found in starburst systems. Cluster formation appears to be a dominant mode of star formation in starbursts. The principal properties of the young clusters are summarized. A new ultraviolet HST imaging survey of the central regions of nearby galaxies indicates that young clusters form in a wide range of environments. Circumnuclear star-forming rings, in particular, are richly populated with clusters, and sever…
We deduce the globular cluster formation history of the nearby elliptical NGC 5128 by using a phenomenological chemical enrichment model to reproduce its observed metallicity distribution function (MDF). We derive the observed MDF using recently obtained U and B photometry of the NGC 5128 GC system, with (U-B) used as the metallicity indicator. We test whether the observed MDF can be reproduced using a single starburst at high redshift followed by passive evolution (monolithic scenario). Our results strongly indicate that this scenario is incapable of reproducing the observed MDF of the NGC 51…
Globular Cluster (GC) systems of most early-type galaxies show bimodal optical color distributions, yet their Luminosity Functions (LFs) look like simple Gaussians with turn-over magnitudes used for determination of distances and the Hubble constant. Taking color distributions and LFs of Milky Way halo GCs as a reference for the apparently universal old metal-poor GC populations and assuming their intrinsic widths to be constant in time at the values of the Milky Way halo GC populations, I study for which combinations of age and metallicity a secondary GC population formed in some violent star…
We use high-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy from Keck Observatory to measure the stellar velocity dispersions of 19 super star clusters (SSCs) in the nuclear starburst of M82. The clusters have ages on the order of 10 Myr, which is many times longer than the crossing times implied by their velocity dispersions and radii. We therefore apply the Virial Theorem to derive the kinematic mass for 15 of the SSCs. The SSCs have masses of 2 x 10^5 to 4 x 10^6 solar masses, with a total population mass of 1.4 x 10^7 solar masses. Comparison of the loci of the young M82 SSCs and old Milky Way globu…
We present a principal components analysis (PCA) of high-quality Lick/IDS absorption-line measurements for 11 indices in the wavelength range 4100-5400 Ang for 39 Galactic globular clusters (GCs). Only the first principal component appears to be physically significant. We find that there is a tight linear relationship between this first component (PC1) and GC metallicity over a wide range in [m/H] (-1.8 <= [m/H] <= 0), suggesting that PC1 may be used to accurately estimate metallicities for old extragalactic GCs from their integrated spectra. The classic GC ``second parameter effect'' is notic…
I assess the similarities and differences between the star-formation modes in quiescent spiral galaxies versus those in violent starburst regions, including galactic nuclei. As opposed to the quiescent star-formation mode, current empirical evidence on the star-formation processes in the extreme, high-pressure environments induced by galaxy encounters strongly suggests that star cluster formation is an important and perhaps even the dominant mode of star formation in such starburst events. This implies that by using star clusters as unique diagnostic probes, we can trace a galaxy's most violen…
M82 B is an old starburst site located in the eastern part of the M82 disc. We derive the distributions of age and metallicity of the star clusters located in this region of M82 by using theoretical evolutionary population synthesis models. Our analysis is based on the comparison of the $BVIJ$ photometry obtained by de Grijs et al. (2001) with the colours of single-generation stellar populations. We show that M82 B went through a chemical enrichment phase up to super-solar metallicities around the time of the last close encounter between M82 and its large neighbour galaxy M81. We date and conf…
We present Sloan g and i imaging from the GMOS instrument on the Gemini North telescope for the globular cluster (GC) system around the Virgo galaxy NGC 4649 (M60). Our three pointings, taken in good seeing conditions, cover an area of about 90 sq. arcmins. We detect 2,151 unresolved sources. Applying colour and magnitude selection criteria to this source list gives 995 candidate GCs that is greater than 90% complete to a magnitude of i = 23.6, with little contamination from background galaxies. We find fewer than half a dozen potential Ultra Compact Dwarf galaxies around NGC 4649. Foreground …
This paper addresses the questions of what we have learned about how and when dense star clusters form, and what studies of star clusters have revealed about galaxy formation and evolution. One important observation is that globular clusters are observed to form in galaxy mergers and starbursts in the local universe, which both provides constraints on models of globular cluster formation, and suggests that similar physical conditions existed when most early-type galaxies and their globular clusters formed in the past. A second important observation is that globular cluster systems typically ha…
The cluster luminosity function (CLF) is one of the most important diagnostics in the study of old globular and young compact star cluster populations. We are currently using ASTROVIRTEL to obtain CLFs in several optical and/or near-infrared passbands, and colour distributions. This will provide us with a powerful analytical tool for the determination of the violent star and cluster formation history of galaxies: we will address questions related to the universality of the globular CLF, the time-scale of low-mass, low-luminosity star cluster depletion and its observability, and environmental e…
Star cluster formation is a major mode of star formation in the extreme conditions of interacting galaxies and violent starbursts. Young clusters are observed to form in a variety of such galaxies, a substantial number resembling the progenitors of globular clusters in mass and size, but with significantly enhanced metallicity. From studies of the metal-poor and metal-rich star cluster populations of galaxies, we can therefore learn about the violent star formation history of these galaxies, and eventually about galaxy formation and evolution. We present a new set of evolutionary synthesis mod…
We present high resolution mid-infrared (mid-IR; 11.7 and 17.65 micron) maps of the central 400 pc region of the starburst galaxy M82. Seven star forming clusters are identified which together provide ~ 15% of the total mid-IR luminosity of the galaxy. Combining the mid-IR data with thermal radio measurements and near- and mid-IR line emission, we find that these young stellar clusters have inferred masses and sizes comparable to globular clusters. At least 20% of the star formation in M82 is found to occur in super-star clusters.
NGC 5846 is a giant elliptical galaxy with a previously well studied globular cluster system (GCS), known to have a bimodal colour distribution with a remarkably high red fraction. Here we revisit the central galaxy regions searching for new globular cluster (GC) candidates, and measuring, magnitudes, colours and sizes for them. We also search for their X-ray counterparts. We use archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images, from which we modelled and subtracted the host light distribution and increased the available sample of GCs. We performed photometry on the central objects, and measured s…
Mergers of gas-rich galaxies lead to gravitationally driven increases in gas pressure that can trigger intense bursts of star and cluster formation. Although star formation itself is clustered, most newborn stellar aggregates are unbound associations and disperse. Gravitationally bound star clusters that survive for at least 10-20 internal crossing times (~20-40 Myr) are relatively rare and seem to contain <10% of all stars formed in the starbursts. The most massive young globular clusters formed in present-day mergers exceed omega Cen by an order of magnitude in mass, yet appear to have norma…
We have analyzed archival HST/ACS images in Sloan g and z of the globular cluster (GC) systems of 53 ellipticals in the Virgo Cluster, spanning massive galaxies to dEs. Among the new results are: (1) In the gEs M87 and NGC 4649, there is a correlation between luminosity and color for individual metal-poor GCs, such that more massive GCs are more metal-rich. A plausible interpretation of this result is self-enrichment, and may suggest that these GCs once possessed dark matter halos. (2) Many dEs have metal-rich GC subpopulations. We also confirm the GC color--galaxy luminosity relations found p…
About 25% of the Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) exhibit unusually extended color distribution of stars in the horizontal-branch (HB) phase. This phenomenon is now best understood as due to the presence of helium enhanced second generation subpopulations, which has raised a possibility that these peculiar GCs might have a unique origin. Here we show that these GCs with extended HB are clearly distinct from other normal GCs in kinematics and mass. The GCs with extended HB are more massive than normal GCs, and are dominated by random motion with no correlation between kinematics and metallicit…
We study the globular cluster (GC) system of the dust-lane elliptical galaxy NGC 6702, using B, V and I-band photometric observations carried out at the Keck telescope. This galaxy has a spectroscopic age of ~2Gyrs suggesting recent star-formation. We find strong evidence for a bimodal GC colour distribution, with the blue peak having a colour similar to that of the Galactic halo GCs. Assuming that the blue GCs are indeed old and metal-poor, we estimate an age of 2-5Gyrs and supersolar metallicity for the red GC subpopulation. Despite the large uncertainties, this is in reasonable agreement wi…
We examine star clusters in the irregular, starburst galaxy NGC 1569 from HST images. In addition to the two known super star clusters, we identify 45 other clusters that are compact but resolved. Integrated UVI colors of the clusters span a large range, and suggest that ages range from 3 Myrs to 1 Gyr. However, most of the clusters were formed at the tail end of the recent starburst. Numerous clusters in addition to the know super star clusters are similar in luminosity to a small globular cluster. We examined the radial surface brightness of four of the clusters. Their half-light radii and c…
Variations in the number of globular clusters per unit galaxy luminosity, which is the specific frequency, and the mass of globular clusters per unit total available mass, are reviewed. Correlations with galaxy luminosity and morphology, and with the properties of the associated galactic clusters are discussed, as are the color distributions of globular cluster populations. Several models for the origin of these variations are summarized, including the tidal stripping and interaction/starburst models. Most of the variations in the specific frequency for elliptical galaxies result from variatio…
I review the long-term survival chances of young massive star clusters (YMCs), hallmarks of intense starburst episodes often associated with violent galaxy interactions. In particular, I address the key question as to whether at least some of these YMCs can be considered proto-globular clusters (GCs). In the absence of significant external perturbations, the key factor determining a cluster's long-term survival chances is the shape of its stellar initial mass function. I conclude that there is an increasing body of evidence that GC formation appears to be continuing until today; their long-ter…
We present a photometric study of the globular cluster systems of the Fornax cluster galaxies NGC 1374, NGC 1379, and NGC 1387. The data consists of images from the wide-field MOSAIC Imager of the CTIO 4-m telescope, obtained with Washington C and Kron-Cousins R filters. The images cover a field of 36 x 36 arcmin, corresponding to 200 x 200 kpc at the Fornax distance. Two of the galaxies, NGC 1374 and NGC 1379, are low-luminosity ellipticals while NGC 1387 is a low-luminosity lenticular. Their cluster systems are still embedded in the cluster system of NGC 1399. Therefore the use of a large fi…
This review focuses on how galaxies and their globular cluster systems form. I first discuss the now fairly convincing evidence that some globular clusters form in galaxy starbursts/mergers. One way these observations are valuable is they place important constraints on the physics of the formation of globular clusters. Moreover, it is natural to associate the typically metal-rich clusters forming in mergers with the substantial metal-rich population of globulars around ellipticals, thereby implying an important role for galaxy mergers in the evolution of elliptical galaxies. I also highlight s…
We present the results of a deep photometric study of the outer halo of NGC 1275, the highly active cD galaxy at the center of the Perseus cluster. We find a modest excess of faint ($R > 22.5$) starlike objects in its halo, indicating a population of old-halo globular clusters. However, the total estimated cluster population corresponds to a specific frequency of $S_N = 4.4 \pm 1.2$, no larger than that of normal giant ellipticals and three times lower than that of other central cD galaxies such as M87. We discuss several ideas for the origin of this galaxy. Our results reinforce the view that…
We present preliminary results of our dynamical study of the outer globular cluster system of NGC 1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax Cluster. About 160 new radial velocities for globular clusters at projected galactocentric distances between 8 and 18 arcminutes indicate that the constant velocity dispersion of 276 km/s (for all clusters) already found for the inner region can be traced out to 80 kpc. We find that the kinematical properties of the blue (metal-poor) and the red (metal-rich) globular cluster subpopulations appear to be different: While the velocity distribution of the red clu…
We present a high-resolution simulation of globular cluster formation in a galaxy merger. For the first time in such a simulation, individual star clusters are directly identified and followed on their orbits. We quantitatively compare star formation in the merger to that in the unperturbed galaxies. The merging galaxies show a strong starburst, in sharp contrast to their isolated progenitors. Most star clusters form in the tidal features. With a mass range of $5\times10^{5}$--$5\times 10^{6} M_{\odot}$, they are identified as globular clusters. The merger remnant is an elliptical galaxy. Populations of young star clusters show significant differences even among "normal" disk galaxies. In this contribution I discuss how properties of young cluster systems are related to those of their host galaxies, based on a recent study of clusters in a sample of 22 nearby spiral galaxies. Luminous young clusters similar to the "super" star clusters observed in starbursts and mergers exist in several of these galaxies, and it is found that the luminosity of the brightest star cluster as well as the specific luminosity of the cluster systems both correlate well with the host galaxy star forma…
We present wide field-of-view near-infrared imaging from the NTT and very deep optical imaging from the HST of the young merging galaxy NGC 3597. The morphology of the galaxy and the properties of the newly formed proto-globular clusters (PGCs) are examined. Our K band data reveals the presence of a second nucleus, which provides further evidence that NGC 3597 is the result of a recent merger. Combining new K band photometry with optical photometry, we are able for the first time to derive a unique age for the newly formed PGCs of a few Myrs. This is consistent with the galaxy starburst age of…
