Recent HST/ACS images of M82 covering the entire galaxy have been used to detect star clusters. The galaxy is known to contain a young population (age < 10 Myr) in its starburst nucleus, surrounded by a post-starburst disk of age < 1 Gyr. We detect more than 650 star clusters in this galaxy, nearly 400 of them in the post-starburst disk. These data have been used to derive the luminosity, mass and size functions separately for the young nuclear, and intermediate-age disk clusters. In this contribution, we discuss the evolutionary status of these clusters, especially, on the chances of some of these clusters surviving to become old globular clusters.
Globular clusters have long been known to contain large excesses of a variety of objects formed through dynamical processes. The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in our knowledge about these systems.
We have studied globular cluster systems (GCSs) around elliptical galaxies in Hickson compact groups using multi-band deep, high quality images from Keck, VLT and CFHT. Analyzing the luminosity functions, specific frequencies, color and spatial distributions, we could determine the properties of the GCSs of those galaxies and trace their star formation histories. We have found poor populations, concentrated toward the center of the galaxies, with bimodal color distributions. The study of GCSs around galaxies in small groups are a blank on the globular cluster literature.
We consider essential mechanisms for orbit-shrinkage or "hardening" of compact binaries in globular clusters to the point of Roche-lobe contact and X-ray emission phase, focussing on the process of collisional hardening due to encounters between binaries and single stars in the cluster core. The interplay between this kind of hardening and that due to emission of gravitational radiation produces a characteristic scaling of the orbit-shrinkage time with the single-star binary encounter rate $γ$ in the cluster which we introduce, clarify, and explore. We investigate possible effects of this scal…
The relation between the Ultra Compact Objects (UCOs) recently discovered in the Fornax cluster (Drinkwater et al. 2000, Hilker et al. 1999) and the brightest globular clusters associated with the central galaxy NGC 1399 has been investigated. The question was adressed whether the UCOs constitute a distinct population of objects not linked to globular clusters or whether there is a smooth transition between both populations. Therefore, a spectroscopic survey on compact objects in the central region of the Fornax cluster was carried out with the 2.5m du Pont telescope (LCO). UCOs and the bright…
We present the first measurement of the globular cluster populations of galaxies in Hickson compact groups, in order to investigate the effect of these high density environments on the formation and evolution of globular cluster systems. Based on V and R band images that we obtained of HCG 22a and HCG 90c with the ESO New Technology Telescope (NTT), we find a total globular cluster population of $1590\pm 854$ for HCG 22a and $2136\pm 718$ for 90c. The specific frequency for HCG 22a was found to be $S_{N}=1.9\pm 1.0$ and $S_{N}= 3.4\pm 1.1$ for HCG 90c. A power-law fit to the globular cluster r…
Representing single stellar populations, globular clusters (GCs) are relatively easy to model, thus providing powerful tools for studying the evolution of galaxies. This has been demonstrated for the blue compact galaxy ESO338-IG04. GC systems in galaxies may be fossils of starbursts and mergers. Thus studies of GCs in the local universe may add to our understanding of the formation and evolution of galaxies and the distant universe.
In dense stellar systems the frequent dynamical interactions between stars play a crucial role in the formation and evolution of compact binaries. We study these processes using a novel approach combining a state-of-the-art binary population synthesis code with a simple treatment of dynamical interactions in dense star cluster cores. Here we focus on the dynamical and evolutionary processes leading to the formation of compact binaries containing white dwarfs in dense globular clusters. We demonstrate that dynamics can increase by factors ~ 2 - 100 the production rates of interesting binaries s…
Our VLT (FLAMES) observations near NGC1399 investigate the connection between ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), NGC1399 globular clusters and intra-cluster globulars. We have uncovered 30 faint compact stellar systems in the Fornax galaxy cluster, adding to 62 bright UCDs previously reported. The magnitude limit of these stellar systems extends down to the globular cluster domain. We detect a filament of UCDs and globular clusters stretching across NGC1399 and find weak evidence for its rotation. These compact stellar systems not only congregate around several cluster galaxies but are also …
The population of compact binaries in dense stellar systems is affected strongly by frequent dynamical interactions between stars and their interplay with the stellar evolution. In this contribution, we consider these effects on binaries with a white dwarf accretor, in particular cataclysmic variables and AM CVns. We examine which processes can successfully lead to the creation of such X-ray binaries. Using numerical simulations, we identify predominant formation channels and predict the expected numbers of detectable systems. We discuss also why the distribution of cataclysmic variables has a…
We explore a Boltzmann scheme for studying the evolution of compact binary populations of globular clusters. We include processes of compact-binary formation by tidal capture and exchange encounters, binary destruction by dissociation and other mechanisms, and binary hardening by encounters, gravitational radiation and magnetic braking, as also the orbital evolution during mass transfer, following Roche lobe contact. For the encounter processes which are stochastic in nature, we study the probabilistic, continuous limit in this introductory work, deferring the specific handling of the stochast…
Multicolour images of the starbursting metal poor blue compact galaxy ESO338-IG04 have been obtained with WFPC2/HST. In the images we find numerous point-like sources concentrated towards the main body of the galaxy, which we identify as globular cluster candidates. We show that these objects are physically associated with the galaxy and that they are spatially extended. Given their high intrinsic luminosities, these objects cannot be individual stars. Using photometric evolution models we show that the objects constitute a rich population of massive star clusters with ages ranging from a few …
We present V, B-V, and DDO C(41-42) and C(42-45) photometry for a sample of 75 red giants down to M_V = +2 in the relatively metal-rich Galactic globular cluster M71. The C(41-42) colors reveal a bimodal distribution of CN band strengths generally anticorrelated with CH band strength as measured by the C(42-45) color. Both DDO colors agree well with those found in 47 Tucanae -- a nearby globular cluster of similar metallicity -- and suggest nearly identical C and N abundance patterns among the giants of both clusters. A comparison with synthetic DDO colors demonstrates that little change in su…
Globular clusters (GCs) constitute a system which is evolving because of various interactions with the galactic environment. Evolution may be the explanation of many observed features of Globular Cluster Systems (GCSs); the different radial distribution of the GCS and the stellar component of early type galaxies is explained by dynamical friction and tidal effects, this latter acting both on the large scale (that of the bulge-halo stars) and on the small scale (that of the nucleus, often containing a central massive black hole). Merging of quickly orbitally decayed massive GCs leads to formati…
We report here on two complementary population synthesis studies which relate directly to the formation and evolution of neutron star binaries in globular clusters. In the first, we compute the probability of retaining neutron stars in globular clusters, and quantitatively confirm the idea that the retention fraction for neutron stars born in binary systems is greatly enhanced over those born in isolated stars. However, the retention fraction may well be insufficient to explain the current population of neutron star binaries. In the second study, we follow a large population of primordial bina…
We investigate the connection between globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) by examining the properties of several compact objects associated with M87, all of which were previously classified as globular clusters. Combining imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope with ground-based Keck spectroscopy, we find two objects to have half-light radii, velocity dispersions and mass-to-light ratios that are consistent with the predictions of population synthesis models for old, metal-rich, luminous globular clusters. Three other objects are much larger, with half-light radii of appr…
Our deep Chandra exposures of 47Tuc and moderate exposures of NGC 6397 reveal a wealth of new phenomena for interacting X-ray binaries (IXBs) in globular clusters. In this (late) Review, updated since the conference, I summarize recent and ongoing analysis of the millisecond pulsars, the compact binaries containing white dwarfs and neutron stars, and the chromospherically active binaries in both globular clusters. Spectral variability analysis enables new insights into source properties and evolutionary history. These binary populations, now so ``easily'' visible, are large enough that their p…
We report the results of two XMM-Newton observations of the ultra-compact low-mass X-ray binary 4U1850-087 located in the galactic globular cluster NGC6712. A broad emission feature at 0.7keV was detected in an earlier ASCA observation and explained as the result of an unusual Ne/O abundance ratio in the absorbing material local to the source. We find no evidence for this feature and derive Ne/O ratios in the range 0.14-0.21, consistent with that of the interstellar medium. During the second observation, when the source was 10% more luminous, there is some evidence for a slightly higher Ne/O r…
We continue exploration of the Boltzmann scheme started in Banerjee and Ghosh (2007, henceforth Paper I) for studying the evolution of compact-binary populations of globular clusters, introducing in this paper our method of handling the stochasticity inherent in dynamical processes of binary formation, destruction and hardening in globular clusters. We describe these stochastic processes as "Wiener processes", whereupon the Boltzmann equation becomes a stochastic partial differential equation, the solution of which requires the use of "Ito calculus" (this use being the first, to our knowledge,…
Globular clusters in the outer halo (R_gc > 15 kpc) are found to be systematically fainter than those at smaller Galactocentric distances. Within the outer halo the compact clusters with half-light radii R_h < 10 pc are only found at R_gc < 40 kpc, while on the other hand the larger clusters with R_h > 10 pc are encountered at all Galactocentric distances. Among the compact clusters with R_h < 10 pc that have R_gc > 15 kpc, there are two objects with surprisingly high metallicities. One of these is Terzan 7, which is a companion of the Sagittarius dwarf. The other is Palomar 1. The data on the…
Galactic globular cluster stars exhibit abundance patterns which are not shared by their field counterparts. It is clear from recent spectroscopic observations of GC turnoff stars that these abundance anomalies were already present in the gas from which the observed stars formed. This provides undisputed support to the so-called self-enrichment scenario according to which a large fraction of GC low-mass stars have formed from material processed through hydrogen-burning at high temperatures and then lost by more massive and faster evolving stars (and perhaps mixed with some original gas). Withi…
We have obtained high resolution (<1") deep x-ray images of the globular cluster 47Tucanae (NGC 104) with the Chandra X-ray Observatory to study the population of compact binaries in the high stellar density core. A 70 kilosec exposure of the cluster reveals a centrally concentrated population of faint (Lx ~10^{30-33} erg/s) x-ray sources, with at least 108 located within the central 2arcmin X 2.5arcmin and at least half with Lx <10^{30.5} erg/s. All 15 millisecond pulsars (MSPs) recently located precisely by radio observations are identified, though two are unresolved by Chandra. The x-ray sp…
Recent observations of globular clusters in intermediate-age (2-4 Gyr old) merger remnants have provided the hitherto `missing link' between between young merger remnants and normal elliptical galaxies. The luminosity functions (LFs) of the `blue' globular clusters exhibit a Gaussian shape centered on M_V ~ -7.2 as found for giant ellipticals, while the `red' clusters exhibit LFs that are more extended towards both the bright and faint ends, as expected for a cluster population of intermediate age. Specific frequencies for these systems have been calculated by evolving both the LF of the `red'…
A binary in which a slightly evolved star starts mass transfer to a neutron star can evolve towards ultra-short orbital periods under the influence of magnetic braking. This is called magnetic capture. We investigate in detail for which initial orbital periods and initial donor masses binaries evolve to periods less than 30-40 minutes within the Hubble time. We show that only small ranges of initial periods and masses lead to ultra-short periods, and that for those only a small time interval is spent at ultra-short periods. Consequently, only a very small fraction of any population of X-ray bi…
In this paper, the first of a series, we study the stellar dynamical and evolutionary processes leading to the formation of compact binaries containing white dwarfs in dense globular clusters. We examine the processes leading to the creation of X-ray binaries such as cataclysmic variables and AM CVn systems. Using numerical simulations, we identify the dominant formation channels and we predict the expected numbers and characteristics of detectable systems, emphasizing how the cluster sources differ from the field population. We explore the dependence of formation rates on cluster properties a…
I present a simplified analytical model that simulates the evolution of the binary population in a dynamically evolving globular cluster. A number of simulations have been run spanning a wide range in initial cluster and environmental conditions by taking into account the main mechanisms of formation and destruction of binary systems. Following this approach, I investigate the evolution of the fraction, the radial distribution, the distribution of mass ratios and periods of the binary population. According to these simulations, the fraction of surviving binaries appears to be dominated by the …
Full evolutionary models have been built to follow the phases of asymptotic giant branch evolution with mass loss for metal mass fractions from Z=0.0002 to Z=0.004. For the first time, we find that temperatures close to or even larger than 10^8 K are achieved at low Z; the full CNO cycle operates at the base of the envelope, the Oxygen abundance for the most metal-poor models of 4 and 5 solar masses is drastically reduced, and sodium and aluminum production by by proton capture on neon and magnesium can occur. These results may be relevant for the evolution of primordial massive globular clust…
We present a CCD investigation of the galactic globular M5 aimed to increase the statistical relevance of the available sample of evolving bright stars. Previous investigations, limited to the outer cluster region, have been extended toward the cluster center, more than doubling the number of observed luminous stars. On this basis, we discuss a statistically relevant sample, rich of 415 HB stars. The occurrence of a gap in the blue side of the HB is suggested. Comparison to the current evolutionary scenario discloses a good agreement concerning both the C-M diagram location and the relative ab…
It is becoming clear that `self--pollution' by the ejecta of massive asymptotic giant branch stars has an important role in the early chemical evolution of globular cluster stars, producing CNO abundance spreads which are observed also at the surface of unevolved stars. Considering that the ejecta which are CNO processed must also be helium enriched, we have modelled stellar evolution of globular cluster stars by taking into account this possible helium enhancement with respect to the primordial value. We show that the differences between the main evolutionary phases (main sequence, turn--off …
We review new Chandra and HST observations of the core collapsed cluster NGC 6397 as a guide to understanding the compact binary (CB) populations in core collapse globulars. New cataclysmic variables (CVs) and main sequence chromospherically active binaries (ABs) have been identified, enabling a larger sample for comparison of the Lx, Fx/Fv and X-ray vs. optical color distributions. Comparison of the numbers of CBs with Lx >10^31 erg/s in 4 core collapse vs. 12 King model clusters reveals that the specific frequency Sx (number of CBs per unit cluster mass) is enhanced in core collapse clusters…
Using direct N-body simulations which include both the evolution of single stars and the tidal field of the parent galaxy, we study the dynamical evolution of globular clusters and rich open clusters. We compare our results with other N-body simulations and Fokker-Planck calculations. Our simulations, performed on the GRAPE-4, employ up to 32,768 stars. The results are not in agreement with Fokker-Planck models, in the sense that the lifetimes of stellar systems derived using the latter are an order of magnitude smaller than those obtained in our simulations. For our standard run, Fokker-Plank…
Star formation in starbursts appears to be biased toward compact clusters, with up to 20% of all stars formed in them. Observations with HST show that many of these clusters have luminosities (-9 > Mv > -16), UBVI colors, and half-light radii (R_eff = ~3 pc) consistent with their being young globular clusters. Although we know little about the long-term stability of the youngest clusters (<20 Myr), compact clusters older than ~10 core-crossing times (20 - 40 Myr) are bound gravitationally and very likely young globulars. The present review concentrates on recent progress achieved in dating suc…
We describe a population of compact objects in the centre of the Fornax Cluster which were discovered as part of our 2dF Fornax Spectroscopic Survey. These objects have spectra typical of old stellar systems, but are unresolved on photographic sky survey plates. They have absolute magnitudes -13<Mb<-11, so they are 10 times more luminous than any Galactic globular clusters, but fainter than any known compact dwarf galaxies. These objects are all within 30 arcminutes of the central galaxy of the cluster, NGC 1399, but are distributed over larger radii than the globular cluster system of that ga…
Although globular clusters are generally chemically homogeneous, substantial abundance variations are sometimes seen even among unevolved main sequence stars, especially for the CNO group of elements. Multi-object intermediate-dispersion spectroscopic systems are now being used to determine the patterns of abundance variations for large samples of stars, while high dispersion spectrographs on 8m-class telescopes are providing good spectra of individual faint stars. In some circumstances the spectra of many similar stars can be combined to yield extremely high S/N spectra. The sample of cluster…
In this paper we present the results of two detailed N-body simulations of the interaction of a sample of four massive globular clusters in the inner region of a triaxial galaxy. A full merging of the clusters takes place, leading to a slowly evolving cluster which is quite similar to observed Nuclear Clusters. Actually, both the density and the velocity dispersion profiles match qualitatively, and quantitatively after scaling, with observed features of many nucleated galaxies. In the case of dense initial clusters, the merger remnant shows a density profile more concentrated than that of the …
We present high-resolution echelle spectroscopy, obtained with the UVES spectrograph on ESO/VLT, of two luminous star clusters in the metal-poor blue compact galaxy ESO 338-IG04 at a distance of 37.5 Mpc. Cross-correlating with template stars, we obtain line-of-sight velocity dispersions of 33 and 17 km/s. By combining with size estimates from Hubble Space Telescope images we infer dynamical masses of 1.3x10^7 and 4.0x10^6 solar masses for the two clusters, making them among the most massive known. The less massive cluster is the faintest cluster for which a dynamical mass has yet been obtaine…
We have discovered a new type of galaxy in the Fornax Cluster: ``ultra-compact'' dwarfs (UCDs). The UCDs are unresolved in ground-based imaging and have spectra typical of old stellar systems. Although the UCDs resemble overgrown globular clusters, based on VLT UVES echelle spectroscopy, they appear to be dynamically distinct systems with higher internal velocity dispersions and M/L ratios for a given luminosity than Milky Way or M31 globulars. Our preferred explanation for their origin is that they are the remnant nuclei of dwarf elliptical galaxies which have been tidally stripped, or ``thre…
We have determined the dynamical mass of the most luminous stellar cluster known to date, i.e. object W3 in the merger remnant galaxy NGC 7252. The dynamical mass is estimated from the velocity dispersion measured with the high-resolution spectrograph UVES on VLT. Our result is the astonishingly high velocity dispersion of sigma=45 +- 5 km/s. Combined with the large cluster size R_eff=17.5 +-1.8 pc, this translates into a dynamical virial mass for W3 of 8 +- 2 x 10^7 Msun. This mass is in excellent agreement with the value 7.2 x 10^7 Msun we previously estimated from the cluster luminosity M_V…
We have performed a detailed study of the broadband spectra of the luminous globular cluster X-ray sources using BeppoSAX. With the exception of X2127+119, located in NGC7078, all the other spectra are well represented by a two component model consisting of a disk-blackbody and Comptonized emission. The measured low-energy absorptions are in good agreement with those predicted from optical measurements of the host globular clusters. This implies that there is little intrinsic X-ray absorption within the binaries themselves, and that the above spectral model provides a good representation of th…
Globular cluster stars evolving off the main sequence are known to lose mass, and it is expected that some of the lost material should remain within the cluster as an intracluster medium (ICM). Most attempts to detect such an ICM have been unsuccessful. The Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer on the Spitzer Space Telescope was used to observe eight Galactic globular clusters in an attempt to detect the thermal emission from ICM dust. Most clusters do not have significant detections at 70 microns; one cluster, NGC 6341, has tentative evidence for the presence of dust, but 90 micron observa…
Dynamical friction and tidal disruption are effective mechanisms of evolution of globular cluster systems, especially in non-axysimmetric galaxies with a central compact nucleus. With a semi-analytical approach based on the knowledge of the dependence of the dynamical friction and tidal disruption effects on the relevant parameters, we are able to follow the time evolution of the globular cluster system in a model of a triaxial galaxy and give its observable properties to compare with observational data. An important result is that the flatter distribution of the globular cluster system relati…
The decay of globular clusters to the center of their mother galaxy corresponds to carrying a quantity of mass sufficient to sustain the gravitational activity of a small pre-existing nucleus and to accrete it in a significant way. This is due to both dynamical friction of field stars and tidal disruption by the compact nucleus. The results of the simplified model presented here show that the active galactic nuclei luminosity and lifetime depend on the characteristics of the globular cluster system and are quite insensitive to the nucleus' initial mass.
Our 2dF Fornax Cluster Spectroscopic Survey (FCSS) and follow-up work in the Virgo Cluster have shown that the cores of both galaxy clusters contain a previously-unknown class of object, ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies. We present high resolution spectroscopy and deep multicolour imaging to show that these enigmatic objects are dynamically distinct from both globular clusters (GCs) and nucleated dwarf galaxies (dE,Ns). Our hypothesis for their origin may explain the observed high ``specific frequency'' of GCs in central cluster galaxies.
We report the discovery of seven new millisecond pulsars during 20 cm searches of 19 globular clusters using the recently upgraded Arecibo Telescope and the new Green Bank Telescope (GBT). Five of the pulsars are in compact binaries, three of which are eclipsing. One of the systems is in an eccentric orbit which is almost certainly highly relativistic. Additional searches and timing observations are underway.
Recent high-resolution observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) reveal that star clusters of extraordinary luminosity and compactness are commonly found in a variety of starburst systems. There has been much speculation that these clusters represent present-day analogs of young globular clusters. Using the HIRES echelle spectrograph on the Keck 10 m telescope, we obtained high-dispersion optical spectra of one of the ``super star clusters'' (cluster ``A'') in the nearby dwarf galaxy NGC 1569. The size of the cluster is known from published HST images. The line-of-sight velocity dispe…
Observations of rich LMC and SMC clusters reveal an increasing spread in core radius with age. This trend likely represents real physical evolution in these systems. Old Magellanic Cloud clusters appear either extended or compact. Similar core radius distributions are observed for the Fornax and Sagittarius dSph cluster systems and in the ``young'' halo Milky Way subsystem. These observations have implications for both the formation of the Galaxy and the dynamical evolution of globular clusters.
In this paper, the second of a series, we study the stellar dynamical and evolutionary processes leading to the formation of compact binaries containing neutron stars (NSs) in dense globular clusters (GCs). For this study, 70 dense clusters were simulated independently, with a total stellar mass ~2x10^7Msun, exceeding the total mass of all dense GCs in our Galaxy. We find that, in order to reproduce the empirically derived formation rate of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), we must assume that NSs can be formed via electron-capture supernovae (ECS) with typical natal kicks smaller than in core-…
The majority of the inhomogeneities in the chemical composition of Globular Cluster (GC) stars appear due to primordial enrichment. The most studied model today claims that the ejecta of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars of high mass -those evolving during the first ~100Myr of the Clusters life- directly form a second generation of stars with abundance anomalies. In this talk, we review the status of the art with regard to this model, whose major problems are i) the modelling of the chemical anomalies is still not fully complete, and ii) it requires an IMF peculiarly enhanced in the intermed…
Wide-field imaging from space will reveal a wealth of information about the globular cluster systems of any galaxies in the local universe that are observed by such a mission. Individual globular clusters around galaxies in the local universe have compact sizes that are ideal for the excellent spatial resolution afforded by space-based imaging, while systems of these globular clusters have large spatial extent that can only be fully explored by wide-field imaging. One example of the science return from such a study is the determination of the major formation epoch(s) of galaxies from the ages …
Stars in globular clusters can act either as sources for MACHOs (Massive Astrophysical Compact Halo Objects) located along the line of sight or as lenses for more distant background stars. Although the expected rate of microlensing events is small, such observations can lead to very useful results. In particular, one could get information on the shape of the galactic halo along different lines of sight, allowing to better constrain its total dark matter content. Moreover, on can also infer the total dark matter content of globular clusters, which is presently not well known. To this latter pur…
Measurements of the surface brightness distribution and of the velocity dispersion profile have been so far used to infer the inner dynamics of globular clusters. We show that those observations do not trace back the dark matter potentially concealed in these systems in the form of low-mass compact objects. We have built Michie models of globular clusters which contain both massive and low-mass stars. An analytic expression for the stellar mass densities has been explicitely derived in terms of the usual error function and Dawson's integral. While the heavy population is kept fixed, the abunda…
Observational constraints to a large class of decaying vacuum cosmologies are derived using the angular size data of compact radio sources and the latest age estimates of globular clusters. For this class of deflationary $Λ(t)$ models, the present value of the vacuum energy density is quantified by a positive $β$ parameter smaller than unity. In the case of milliarcsecond compact radio-sources, we find that the allowed intervals for $β$ and the matter density parameter $Ω_m$ are heavily dependent on the value of the mean projected linear size $l$. For $l \simeq 20h^{-1} - 30h^{-1}$ pc, the bes…
The spatial distribution of compact dark matter in our Galaxy can be determined in a few years of monitoring Galactic globular clusters for microlensing. Globular clusters are the only dense fields of stars distributed throughout the three-dimensional halo and hence are uniquely suited to probe its structure. The microlensing optical depths towards different clusters have varying contributions from the thin disk, thick disk, bulge, and halo of the Galaxy. Although measuring individual optical depths to all the clusters is a daunting task, we show that interesting Galactic structure information…
The structure of a very bright (MV = -10.9) globular cluster in NGC 1023 is analyzed on two sets of images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. From careful modeling of King profile fits to the cluster image, a core radius of 0.55+/-0.1 pc, effective radius 3.7+/-0.3 pc and a central V-band surface brightness of 12.9+/-0.5 mag / square arcsec are derived. This makes the cluster much more compact than Omega Cen, but very similar to the brightest globular cluster in M31, G1 = Mayall II. The cluster in NGC 1023 appears to be very highly flattened with an ellipticity of about 0.37, even higher t…
We discuss the power of time-evolving photoionization as a diagnostic tool to measure the electron density of photoionized gas. We apply this technique to a XMM-Newton observation of the ionized absorber in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051, and present the first measurements of the its volume density, its distance from the central ionizing source, and so its mass outflow rate. By extrapolating these measurements to high-luminosity, large black hole mass, quasars, we speculate that AGN winds can play important roles both in the AGN-host-galaxy and AGN-IGM feedback processes.
The present work extends and deepens previous examinations of the evolution of globular cluster orbits in elliptical galaxies, by means of numerical integrations of a wide set of orbits in 5 self-consistent triaxial galactic models characterized by a central core and different axial ratios. These models constitute a valid and complete representation of regular orbits in elliptical galaxies. Dynamical friction is definitely shown to be an efficient cause of evolution for the globular cluster systems in elliptical galaxies of any mass and axial ratios. Moreover, our statistically significant sam…
Dynamical friction due to field stars and tidal disruption caused by a central nucleus are crucial in determining the evolution of the globular cluster system in an elliptical galaxy. In this paper I examine the possibility that some of galactic nuclei have been formed by frictionally decayied globular clusters moving in a triaxial potential. The initial rapid growth of the nucleus, due mainly to massive clusters on box orbits falling in a short time scale into the galactic centre, is found to be later slowed by tidal disruption induced by the nucleus itself on less massive clusters in the way…
We argue that globular clusters (GCs) are good candidates for gravitational lenses in explaining quasar-galaxy associations. The catalog of associations (Bukhmastova 2001) compiled from the LEDA catalog of galaxies (Paturel 1997) and from the catalog of quasars (Veron-Cetty and Veron 1998) is used. Based on the new catalog containing 8382 pairs, we show that one might expect an increased number of GCs around irregular galaxies of types 9 and 10 from the hypothesis that distant compact sources are gravitationally lensed by GCs in the halos of foreground galaxies. The King model is used to deter…
The microlensing of background stars by compact objects in globular clusters is analyzed. The main strength of the proposed search is the direct relationship between the lens mass and the time scale of the microlensing event. The main problem is the low overall rate of expected events which implies that a ground based search should last for about a decade to generate a non trivial number of events, like a few dozen. A space borne experiment could increase the rate by a large factor by increasing the number of stars which could be monitored thanks to the much better seeing. The clusters M22 wit…
Massive star clusters observed in galaxy mergers are often suggested to be progenitors of globular clusters. To study this hypothesis, we performed the highest resolution simulation of a gas-rich galaxy merger so far. The formation of massive star clusters of 10^5 to 10^7 Mo, triggered by the galaxy interaction, is directly resolved in this model. We show that these clusters are tightly bound structures with little net rotation, due to evolve into compact long-lived stellar systems. Massive clusters formed in galaxy mergers are thus robust candidates for progenitors of long-lived globular clus…
Some of the properties of the globular clusters in NGC 5128 are compared to those of Galactic globular clusters. Assuming the color- metallicity relations that hold for Galactic globular clusters then the metal-poor clusters in NGC 5128 that have [Fe/H] < -1.80 are significantly fainter than are the more metal-rich globulars in that galaxy. No such metallicity dependent luminosity difference is observed among the globular clusters associated with the Milky Way. Furthermore the NGC 5128 cluster sample contains two objects that, on the basis of their observed colors, appear to be super metal-poo…
