Novel applications in nanotechnology rely on the design of tailored nano-architectures. For this purpose, carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles are intensively investigated. In this work we study the influence of non-functionalized carbon nanotubes on the synthesis of CdSe nanoparticles by means of organometallic colloidal routes. This new synthesis methodology does not only provide an effective path to attach nanoparticles non-covalently to carbon nanotubes but represents also a new way to control the shape of nanoparticles.
The formation of monodisperse, tunable sized, alloyed nanoparticles of Ni, Co, or Fe with Pt and pure Pt nanoparticles attached to carbon nanotubes has been investigated. Following homogeneous nucleation, nanoparticles attach directly to non-functionalized singlewall and multiwall carbon nanotubes during nanoparticle synthesis as a function of ligand nature and the nanoparticle work function. These ligands do not only provide a way to tune the chemical composition, size and shape of the nanoparticles but also control a strong reversible interaction with carbon nanotubes and permit controlling …
There is a strong interest to attach nanoparticles non-covalently to one-dimensional systems like boron nitride nanotubes to form composites. The combination of those materials might be used for catalysis, in solar cells, or for water splitting. Additionally, the fundamental aspect of charge transfer between the components can be studied in such systems. We report on the synthesis and characterization of nanocomposites based on semiconductor nanoparticles attached directly and non-covalently to boron nitride nanotubes. Boron nitride nanotubes were simply integrated into the colloidal synthesis…
The attachment of semiconducting nanoparticles to carbon nanotubes is one of the most challenging subjects in nanotechnology. Successful high coverage attachment and control over the charge transfer mechanism and photo-current generation opens a wide field of new applications such as highly effective solar cells and fibre-enhanced polymers. In this work we study the charge transfer in individual double-wall carbon nanotubes highly covered with uniform ZnO nanoparticles. The synthetic colloidal procedure was chosen to avoid long-chained ligands at the nanoparticle-nanotube interface. The result…
The growth morphology and the effects of surface reconstruction/relaxation of the habit faces on the crystal morphology of urea crystal are investigated from first principle using the Hartman-Perdok approach. A procedure has been developed to find out surface termination when a slab of d(hkl) thickness is created having {hkl} orientation. Slice energy of different habit faces have been computed and the attachment energy was calculated. The crystal growth morphology of the urea crystal has been drawn on the basis of computed attachment energies of different habit faces. The calculated crystal g…
We report on the measurement of the effective radial modulus of multiwalled Boron Nitride nanotubes with external radii in the range 3.7 to 36 nm and number of layers in between 5 and 48. These Boron Nitride nanotubes are radially much stiffer than previously reported thinner and smaller Boron Nitride nanotubes. Here, we show the key role of the morphology of the nanotubes in determining their radial rigidity, in particular we find that the external and internal radii, R_ext and R_int, have a stronger influence on the radial modulus than the NT's thickness, t. We find that the effective radial…
The effects of oxidative treatment of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on the adhesion and proliferation of human osteoblasts (SAOS-2) were investigated. The surface properties of SWCNTs after oxygen plasma treatment were characterised by contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The immunofluorescent staining of vinculin, actin filaments and nuclei was used to probe cell adhesion and growth on SWCNT films. Our results show that adhesion and proliferation of human osteoblasts cultivated on SWCNT films indeed depends on the degree of an oxidative tre…
In an attempt to understand why catalytic methods for the growth of boron nitride nanotubes work much worse than for their carbon counterparts, we use first-principles calculations to study the energetics of elemental reactions forming N2, B2 and BN molecules on an iron catalyst. We observe that in the case of these small molecules, the catalytic activity is hindered by the formation of B2 on the iron surface. We also observe that the local morphology of a step edge present in our nanoparticle model stabilizes the boron nitride molecule with respect to B2 due to the ability of the step edge to…
Insights to the mechanism of CdSe nanoparticle attachment to carbon nanotubes following the hot injection method are discussed. It was observed that the presence of water improves the nanotube coverage while Cl containing media are responsible for the shape transformation of the nanoparticles and further attachment to the carbon lattice. The experiments also show that the mechanism taking place involves the right balance of several factors, namely, low passivated nanoparticle surface, particles with well-defined crystallographic facets, and interaction with an organics-free sp2 carbon lattice.…
Transformation of carbon dioxide into carbon nanotubes, CNTs, by electrolysis in molten carbonates provides a low cost route to extract and store this greenhouse gas. CNTs are more stable, compact and valuable than fuels or other CO2 conversion products, providing an incentive to remove CO2 for climate mitigation. Previously, solid core carbon nanofibers, CNFs were formed with C-13 isotope CO2, whereas hollow core fibers - carbon nanotubes, CNTs, were formed with natural isotope CO2 splitting in molten lithium carbonate. Here we demonstrate the extraordinary range of specific morphologies and …
The present paper investigates the cross-sectional morphology of Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes (MWNTs) restrained radially and circumferentially by an infinite surrounding elastic medium, subjected to uniform external hydrostatic pressure. In this study, a two-dimensional plane strain model is developed, assuming no variation of load and deformation along the tube axis. We find some characteristic cross-sectional shapes from the elastic buckling analysis. The effect of the surrounded elastic medium on the cross-sectional shape which occurs due to pressure buckling is focused on by the compariso…
Self-assembled hierarchical solid surfaces are very interesting for wetting phenomena, as observed in a variety of natural and artificial surfaces. Here, we report single-walled (SWCNT) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) thin films realized by a simple, rapid, reproducible, and inexpensive filtration process from an aqueous dispersion, that was deposited at room temperature by a dry-transfer printing method on glass. Furthermore, the investigation of carbon nanotube films through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals the multi-scale hierarchical morphology of the self-assembled carb…
Carbon nanotubes are of potential interest as heterogeneous catalysis supports, in part because they offer a high surface area hexagonal array of carbon atoms for columnar or epitaxial attachment. Fringe visibility modeling of electron microscope lattice images allows one to investigate the relationship between individual nanoparticles and such nanotube supports. We show specifically how (111) columnar or epitaxial growth of FCC metal lattices, on carbon nanotubes viewed side-on, results in well-defined patterns of (111)-fringe orientations with respect to the tube axis. In the epitaxial case,…
We present a study on the quantum transport properties of chemically functionalized metallic double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWNTs) with lengths reaching the micrometer scale. First-principles calculations evidence that, for coaxial tubes separated by the typical graphitic van der Waals-bond distance, the chemical modification of the outer wall with sp$^3$-type defects affects the electronic structure of both the outer and the inner tube, which reduces significantly the charge transport capability of the DWNT. For larger spacing between sidewalls, the conductivity of the outer wall decreases w…
In order to accommodate an increasing demand for carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with desirable characteristics one has to understand the origin of helicity of their structures. Here, through in situ microscopy we demonstrate that the nucleation of a carbon nanotube is initiated by the formation of the carbon cap. Nucleation begins with the formation of a graphene embryo that is bound between opposite step-edges on the nickel catalyst surface. The embryo grows larger as the step-edges migrate along the surface, leading to the formation of a curved carbon cap when the steps flow across the edges of adj…
The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) is the key concept to produce new, advanced, freon-like free, low cost and environmental friendly magnetic refrigerators. Among several potential materials, $Sm_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}MnO_3$ manganite presents one of the highest MCE value in comparison to all other known manganites; however, its studied was only concentrated on the bulk material. To overcame this lack of the information we successfully produced advanced nanostructures, namely nanoparticles and nanotubes of that highlighted manganite by using a sol-gel modified method. High resolution transmission electron…
Large-scale fully interconnected ring carbon nanotube (CNT) networks were first prepared using thermo chemical vapor deposition in nano-channel network templates of porous anodic alumina. This conductive CNT network film consists of billions of nanotube segments with a single layer, and could be made as large as the centimeter size of the template, with a uniform two-dimensional ring topological structure. These CNT networks could be grown from tiny Fe/Co catalyst particles which were electro-deposited into the templates, or totally without additional metallic catalysts. The common interconnec…
I describe a semi-empirical molecular model of the surface attachment kinetics governing ice crystal growth from water vapor as a function of temperature, supersaturation, and crystal mesostructure. An important new hypothesis in this model is surface-energy-driven molecular diffusion enabled by a leaky Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier. The proposed surface-diffusion behavior is sensitive to facet width and surface premelting, yielding structure-dependent attachment kinetics with a complex temperature dependence. By incorporating several reasonable assumptions regarding the surface premelting behavio…
The assembly of aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) into fibers (CNTF) is a convenient approach to exploit and apply the unique physico-chemical properties of CNTs in many fields. CNT functionalization has been extensively used for their implementation into composites and devices. However, CNTF functionalization is still in its infancy, due to the challenges associated with preservation of CNTF morphology. Here, we report a thorough study of the gas-phase functionalization of CNTF fabrics using ozone that was generated in situ from a UV-source. By contrast with liquid-based oxidation methods, this …
Structural properties of Mild Steel have been modified by embedding Carbon Nanotubes in its matrix. The embedment was done by forming a composite at the surface of MS with the help of a thermionic electron beam source at an acceleration potential of 5 kV and beam current of 45 mA. Structural analysis was carried out by X-Ray Diffraction(XRD). Stress and strain were reduced about three times while the crystalline size was reduced to 22% after embedment of Carbon Nanotubes. Surface morphology was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and composition was examined by Energy Dispersive X-R…
The electron field emission of patterned films of nitrogenated carbon nanotubes is shown to be decisively influenced by the deposition conditions. The growth was carried out by decomposing methane in a nitrogen/ammonia atmosphere using hot filament chemical vapor deposition (CVD). The diameter of the produced tubes depended critically on the distance between substrate and filament, and the field emission properties applied fields needed for electron emission, field amplification factor) could be directly correlated to the film morphology. This demonstrates the possibility of tuning the field e…
We report a comprehensive study on the electrochemical performance of four different Transition Metal Oxides encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes (CNT). Irrespective of the type of oxide-encapsulate, all these samples exhibit superior cyclic stability as compared to the bare-oxide. Innovative use of camphor during sample synthesis enables precise control over the morphology of these self-organized carbon nanotube structures, which in turn appears to play a crucial role in the magnitude of the specific capacity. A comparative evaluation of the electrochemical data on different samples bring for…
Single-wall carbon nanotube (SWNT) nanofibrils were assembled onto a variety of conductive scanning probes including atomic force microscope (AFM) tips and scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) needles using positive dielectrophoresis (DEP). The magnitude of the applied electric field was varied in the range of 1-20 V to investigate its effect on the dimensions of the assembled SWNT nanofibrils. Both length and diameter grew asymptotically as voltage increased from 5 to 18 V. Below 4 V, stable attachment of SWNT nanofibrils could not be achieved due to the relatively weak DEP force versus Brown…
Single-, double- and triple-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs, DWNTs and TWNTs) have been controlla- bly synthesized by an arc discharge method using asphalt as carbon source. The morphology and struc- ture of three kinds of products synthesized with Fe as catalyst were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). It was found that different buffer gases strongly affect the number layers in the synthesized nanotubes. In the He gas atmosphere only SWNTs were found to…
A model for the formation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and layered graphene in an arc discharge method is developed on the basis of observed erosion of graphite anode under various experimental conditions and analyses of the morphology of the eroded anode-surface, concerned cathode deposits and their constituents. It is predicted that, cold thermal shock, triggered by the rapid movement of the anode-spot, leads to crack microbranching at some selected locations on the anode-surface. These crack-microbranches cleave and fragment the basal planes of pairs of adjacent crystallites into curved graph…
Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forests are a particularly interesting class of nanomaterials, because they combine multifunctional properties, such as high energy absorption, compressive strength, recoverability and super-hydrophobicity with light weight. These characteristics make them suitable for application as coating, protective layers and antifouling substrates for metallic pipelines and blades. Direct growth of CNT forests on metals offers the possibility to transfer the tunable CNT functionalities directly onto the desired substrates. Here, we focus on characterizing the stru…
We examined the potential of antibody-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) field-effect transistors (FETs) for use as a fast and accurate sensor for a Lyme disease antigen. Biosensors were fabricated on oxidized silicon wafers using chemical vapor deposition grown carbon nanotubes that were functionalized using diazonium salts. Attachment of Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme) flagellar antibodies to the nanotubes was verified by Atomic Force Microscopy and electronic measurements. A reproducible shift in the turn-off voltage of the semiconducting SWNT FETs was seen upon incubation with…
A thermally induced templated synthesis for SiC nanotubes and nanofibers using ammonia or nitrogen as a carrier gas, single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) as templates as well as gaseous Si is presented. The bundles of SWCNT act as both the carbon source and as a nanoframe from which SiC structuctures form. Depending on the duration of the thermally induced templated reaction, for a fixed temperature, carrier gas, and gas pressure, various SiC nanostructures are obtained. These structures include SiC nanorods coated in C, SiC nanorods, SiC nanotubes, and SiC nanocrytals. From our analysis using…
We present the numerical tool DECaNT (Diffusion of Excitons in Carbon NanoTubes) that simulates exciton transport in thin films of carbon nanotubes. Through a mesh of nanotubes generated using the Bullet Physics C++ library, excitons move according to an ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm, with the scattering rates that account for tube chirality, orientation, and distance. We calculate the diffusion tensor from the position--position correlation functions and analyze its anisotropy and dependence on the film composition, morphology, and defect density.
We demonstrate that a single zone furnace with a modified synthesis chamber design is sufficient to obtain metal (Fe, Co or Ni) filled carbon nanotubes (CNT) with high filling efficiency and controlled morphology. Samples are formed by pyrolysis of metallocenes, a synthesis technique that otherwise requires a dual zone furnace. Respective metallocene in all three cases are sublimed in powder form, a crucial factor for obtaining high filling efficiency. While Fe@CNT is routinely produced using this technique, well-formed Ni@CNT or Co@CNT samples are reported for the first time. This is achieved…
The thermal properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are of significant interest, yet their dependence on SWNT chirality has been, until now, not explored experimentally. Here we used electrical heating and infrared thermal imaging to simultaneously study thermal and electrical transport in chirality-sorted SWNT networks. We examined solution processed 90% semiconducting, 90% metallic, purified unsorted (66% semiconducting), and as-grown HiPco SWNT films. The thermal conductivities of these films range from 80 to 370 W/m/K but are not controlled by chirality, instead being dependen…
The promise of enhanced performance has motivated the study of one dimensional nanomaterials, especially aligned carbon nanotubes (A-CNTs), for the reinforcement of polymeric materials. While early work has shown that CNTs have remarkable theoretical properties, more recent work on aligned CNT polymer matrix nanocomposites (A-PNCs) have reported mechanical properties that are orders of magnitude lower than those predicted by rule of mixtures. This large difference primarily originates from the morphology of the CNTs that reinforce the A-PNCs, which have significant local curvature commonly ref…
Porous metal oxides with nano-sized features attracted intensive interest in recent decades due to their high surface area which is essential for many applications, e.g. Li ion batteries, photocatalysts, fuel cells and dye-sensitized solar cells. Various approaches were so far investigated to synthesize porous nanostructured metal oxides, including self-assembly and template-assisted synthesis. For the latter approach, forests of carbon nanotubes are considered as particularly promising templates, with respect to their one dimensional nature and the resulting high surface area. In this work, w…
We present results of extensive theoretical studies concerning stability, morphology, and band structure of single wall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) covalently functionalized by -CHn(for n=2,3,4),-NHn(for n=1,2,3,4),-COOH and -OH groups. Our studies are based on ab initio calculations in the framework of the density functional theory. We determine the dependence of the binding energies on the concentration of the adsorbed molecules, critical densities of adsorbed molecules, global and local changes in the morphology, and electronic structure paying particular attention to the functionalization indu…
We have taken advantage of the native surface roughness and the iron content of AISI 316 stainless steel to direct grow multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) random networks by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at low-temperature ($< 1000^{\circ}$C), without the addition of any external catalysts or time-consuming pre-treatments. In this way, super-hydrophobic MWCNT films on stainless steel sheets were obtained, exhibiting high contact angle values ($154^{\circ}$) and high adhesion force (high contact angle hysteresis). Furthermore, the investigation of MWCNT films at scanning electron microscopy…
Ever since the discovery of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), it has long been a challenging goal to create macroscopically ordered assemblies, or crystals, of CNTs that preserve the one-dimensional quantum properties of individual CNTs on a macroscopic scale. Recently, a simple and well-controlled method was reported for producing wafer-scale crystalline films of highly aligned and densely packed CNTs through spontaneous global alignment that occurs during vacuum filtration [\textit{Nat.\ Nanotechnol}.\ \textbf{11}, 633 (2016)]. However, a full understanding of the mechanism of such global alignment h…
Au nanoparticles at the TiO$_2$ surface can enhance the photocatalytic H$_2$ generation performances owing to their electron transfer co-catalytic ability. Key to maximize the co-catalytic effect is a fine control over Au nanoparticle size and placement on the photocatalyst, in relation to parameters such as the TiO$_2$ morphology, illumination wavelength and pathway, and light penetration depth in the photocatalyst. Here we present an approach for site-selective intrinsic-decoration of anodic TiO$_2$ nanotubes (TNs) with Au nanoparticles: we produce, by Ti and Au co-sputtering, Ti-Au alloy la…
The eventual exploitation of one-dimensional nanomaterials yet needs the development of scalable, high yield, homogeneous, and environmentally friendly methods able to meet the requirements for the fabrication of under design functional nanomaterials. In this article, we demonstrate a vacuum and plasma one-reactor approach for the synthesis of the fundamental common element in solar energy and optoelectronics, i.e. the transparent conducting electrode but in the form of nanotubes and nanotrees architectures. Although the process is generic and can be used for a variety of TCOs and wide-bandgap…
A great efficacy of molecular quantum chemistry applied to basic graphene problems has been recently demonstrated by the authors when studying the formation of peculiar composites between carbon nanotubes and graphene as well as considering tensile deformation and fracture of a graphene sheet in due course of a mechanochemical reaction. The optimistic results obtained in the studies make it possible to shift attention from the solid state problems and consider the graphane formation as multistep hydrogenation of the pristine molecule. To proceed we have to answer the following questions: 1) wh…
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are stiff, all-carbon macromolecules with diameters as small as one nanometer and few microns long. Solutions of CNTs in chlorosulfonic acid (CSA) follow the phase behavior of rigid rod polymers interacting via a repulsive potential and display a liquid crystalline phase at sufficiently high concentration. Here, we show that small-angle X-ray scattering and polarized light microscopy data can be combined to characterize quantitatively the morphology of liquid crystalline phases formed in CNT solutions at concentrations from 3 to 6.5 % by volume. We find that upon increa…
Although individual carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are superior as constituents to polymer chains, the mechanical and thermal properties of CNT fibers (CNTFs) remain inferior to commercial synthetic fibers due to the lack of synthesis methods to embed CNTs effectively in superstructures. The application of conventional techniques for mechanical enhancement resulted in a mild improvement of target properties while achieving parity at best on others. In this work, a Double-Drawing technique is developed to deform continuously grown CNTFs and rearrange the constituent CNTs in both mesoscale and nanoscal…
Macroscopic fibers of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have emerged as an ideal architecture to exploit the exceptional properties of CNT building blocks in applications ranging from energy storage to reinforcement in structural composites. Controlled synthesis and scalability are amongst the most pressing challenges to further materialize the potential of CNT fibers. This workshows that under floating catalyst chemical vapor conditions in the direct spinning method, used both in research and industry, the ceramic reactor tube plays an unsuspected active role in CNT growth, leading for example to doublin…
