We are concerned with a viscous Burgers equation forced by a perturbation of white noise type. We study the corresponding transition semigroup in a space of continuous functions weighted by a proper potential, and we show that the infinitesimal generator is the closure (with respect to a suitable topology) of the Kolmogorov operator associated to the stochastic equation. In the last part of the paper we use this result to solve the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation.
We provide new regularity results for the solutions of the Kolmogorov equation associated to a SPDE with nonlinear diffusion coefficients and a Burgers type nonlinearity. This generalizes previous results in the simpler cases of additive or affine noise. The basic tool is a discrete version of a two sided stochastic integral which allows a new formulation for the derivatives of these solutions. We show that this can be used to generalize the weak order analysis performed in [16]. The tools we develop are very general and can be used to study many other examples of applications.
We prove existence of invariant measures for the Markovian semigroup generated by the solution to a parabolic semilinear stochastic PDE whose nonlinear drift term satisfies only a kind of symmetry condition on its behavior at infinity, but no restriction on its growth rate is imposed. Thanks to strong integrability properties of invariant measures $μ$, solvability of the associated Kolmogorov equation in $L^1(μ)$ is then established, and the infinitesimal generator of the transition semigroup is identified as the closure of the Kolmogorov operator. A key role is played by a generalized variati…
We prove the existence and the Besov regularity of the density of the solution to a general parabolic SPDE which includes the stochastic Burgers equation on an unbounded domain. We use an elementary approach based on the fractional integration by parts.
This article deals with stochastic partial differential equations with quadratic nonlinearities perturbed by small additive and multiplicative noise. We present the approximate solution of the original equation via the amplitude equation and give the rigorous error analysis. For illustration, we apply our main theorems to stochastic Burger's equation.
Motivated by applications to a manifold of semilinear and quasilinear stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) we establish the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions to coercive and locally monotone SPDEs driven by Lévy processes. We illustrate the main result of our paper by showing how it can be applied to various types of SPDEs such as stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, stochastic Burgers type equations, stochastic 2D hydrodynamical systems and stochastic equations of non-Newtonian fluids, which generalize many existing results in the literature.
In this paper we prove the existence and uniqueness of strong solutions for SPDE in Hilbert space with locally monotone coefficients, which is a generalization of the classical result of Krylov and Rozovskii for monotone coefficients. Our main result can be applied to different types of SPDEs such as stochastic reaction-diffusion equations, stochastic Burgers type equation, stochastic 2-D Navier-Stokes equation, stochastic $p$-Laplace equation and stochastic porous media equation with some non-monotone perturbations.
This work aims to prove the small time large deviation principle (LDP) for a class of stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) with locally monotone coefficients in generalized variational framework. The main result could be applied to demonstrate the small time LDP for various quasilinear and semilinear SPDEs such as stochastic porous media equations, stochastic $p$-Laplace equations, stochastic Burgers type equation, stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equation, stochastic power law fluid equation and stochastic Ladyzhenskaya model. In particular, our small time LDP result seems to be new i…
This paper introduces a new $p$-dependent coercivity condition through which $L^p$-moments for solutions can be obtained for a large class of SPDEs in the variational framework. If $p=2$, our condition reduces to the classically coercivity condition, which only yields second moments for the solution. The abstract result is shown to be optimal. Moreover, the results are applied to obtain $L^p$-moments of solutions for several classical SPDEs such as stochastic heat equations with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, Burgers' equation and the Navier-Stokes equations in two spatial dimensio…
In this article we derive rigorously amplitude equations for stochastic PDEs with quadratic nonlinearities, under the assumption that the noise acts only on the stable modes and for an appropriate scaling between the distance from bifurcation and the strength of the noise. We show that, due to the presence of two distinct timescales in our system, the noise (which acts only on the fast modes) gets transmitted to the slow modes and, as a result, the amplitude equation contains both additive and multiplicative noise. As an application we study the case of the one dimensional Burgers equation for…
This paper is a synopsis of the recent book A. Boritchev, S. Kuksin, \textit{One-Dimensional Turbulence and the Stochastic Burgers Equation}, AMS Publications, 2021 (to appear). The book is dedicated to the stochastic Burgers equation as a model for 1d turbulence, and the paper discusses its content in relation to the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence.
In this paper, we study the regularities of solutions of nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations in the framework of Hilbert scales. Then we apply our general result to several typical nonlinear SPDEs such as stochastic Burgers and Ginzburg-Landau's equations on the real line, stochastic 2D Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space and a stochastic tamed 3D Navier-Stokes equation in the whole space, and obtain the existence of their respectively smooth solutions.
We consider the stochastically forced Burgers equation with an emphasis on spatially rough driving noise. We show that the law of the process at a fixed time $t$, conditioned on no explosions, is absolutely continuous with respect to the stochastic heat equation obtained by removing the nonlinearity from the equation. This establishes a form of ellipticity in this infinite dimensional setting. The results follow from a recasting of the Girsanov Theorem to handle less spatially regular solutions while only proving absolute continuity at a fixed time and not on path-space. The results are proven…
We consider regularity properties of stochastic kinetic equations with multiplicative noise and drift term which belongs to a space of mixed regularity ($L^p$-regularity in the velocity-variable and Sobolev regularity in the space-variable). We prove that, in contrast with the deterministic case, the SPDE admits a unique weakly differentiable solution which preserves a certain degree of Sobolev regularity of the initial condition without developing discontinuities. To prove the result we also study the related degenerate Kolmogorov equation in Bessel-Sobolev spaces and construct a suitable sto…
We prove pathwise uniqueness for an abstract stochastic reaction-diffusion equation in Banach spaces. The drift contains a bounded Hölder term; in spite of this, due to the space-time white noise it is possible to prove pathwise uniqueness. The proof is based on a detailed analysis of the associated Kolmogorov equation. The model includes examples not covered by the previous works based on Hilbert spaces or concrete SPDEs.
We study the numerical approximation of the invariant measure of a viscous scalar conservation law, one-dimensional and periodic in the space variable, and stochastically forced with a white-in-time but spatially correlated noise. The flux function is assumed to be locally Lipschitz continuous and to have at most polynomial growth. The numerical scheme we employ discretises the SPDE according to a finite-volume method in space, and a split-step backward Euler method in time. As a first result, we prove the well-posedness as well as the existence and uniqueness of an invariant measure for both …
We consider the generalised Burgers equation $$ \frac{\partial u}{\partial t} + f'(u)\frac{\partial u}{\partial x} - ν\frac{\partial^2 u}{\partial x^2}=0,\ t \geq 0,\ x \in S^1, $$ where $f$ is strongly convex and $ν$ is small and positive. We obtain sharp estimates for Sobolev norms of $u$ (upper and lower bounds differ only by a multiplicative constant). Then, we obtain sharp estimates for small-scale quantities which characterise the decaying Burgers turbulence, i.e. the dissipation length scale, the structure functions and the energy spectrum. The proof uses a quantitative version of an ar…
In this paper we develop a new approach to nonlinear stochastic partial differential equations with Gaussian noise. Our aim is to provide an abstract framework which is applicable to a large class of SPDEs and includes many important cases of nonlinear parabolic problems which are of quasi- or semilinear type. This first part is on local existence and well-posedness. A second part in preparation is on blow-up criteria and regularization. Our theory is formulated in an $L^p$-setting, and because of this we can deal with nonlinearities in a very efficient way. Applications to several concrete pr…
In this paper we introduce a new PDE model in frequency space for the inertial energy cascade that reproduces the classical scaling laws of Kolmogorov's theory of turbulence. Our point of view is based upon studying the energy flux through a continuous range of scales rather than the discrete set of dyadic scales. The resulting model is a variant of Burgers equation on the half line with a boundary condition which represents a constant energy input at integral scales. The viscous dissipation is modeled via a damping term. We show existence of a unique stationary solution, both in the viscous a…
This article proposes for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) driven by additive noise, a novel approach for the approximate parameterizations of the ``small'' scales by the ``large'' ones, along with the derivaton of the corresponding reduced systems. This is accomplished by seeking for stochastic parameterizing manifolds (PMs) introduced in a previous work by the authors(*), which are random manifolds aiming to provide --- in a mean square sense --- such approximate parameterizations. Backward-forward systems are designed to give access to such PMs as pullback limits depending …
