Here we report on synthesis and characterization of a new member LaO1-deltaNiBi in the family of novel superconductors. Though the onset superconducting temperature ~4 K is smaller compared to 55 K that has been achieved already in SmO1-deltaFeAs the similarities in crystalline structure, elec-tronic properties and low-temperature electron transport features give evidence to the common mechanism that seems to underlie the superconducting state in lanthanum nickel oxybismuthides and oxyarsenides.
We report high-resolution specific heat data on a high-quality single crystal of the classical superconductor V3Si, which reveal tiny lambda-shape anomalies appearing superimposed onto the BCS specific heat jump at the superconducting transition in magnetic fields of 2 T and higher. The appearance of these anomalies is accompanied by a magnetic-field-induced broadening of the superconducting transition. We demonstrate, using scaling relations predicted by the fluctuation models of the 3d-XY and the 3d-Lowest-Landau-Level (3d-LLL) universality class, that the effect of critical fluctuations bec…
We theoretically study Josephson vortex structures in Josephson junctions which have multiple tunneling channels caused by multiple superconducting gaps. Deriving "coupled sine-Gordon equations" from the free-energy taking account of the multiple tunneling channels, we examine two typical situations, a heterotic junction composed of multigap-superconductor, insulator, and single-gap superconductor, and a grain-boundary junction formed by two identical multigap superconductors. Then, we reveal in both situations that the magnetic field distribution of the Josephson vortex for $\pm s$-wave super…
The influence of a partial substitution with S, Te, Co, Ni and Cu atoms on the electronic structure of the FeSe superconductor has been investigated within the density functional theory. The results of the supercell calculations reveal distinct changes of electronic structures of the substituted FeSe systems, which can be responsible for their superconducting properties. The replacement of Se atoms by Te or S ones yields imperfect nesting between the holelike and electronlike Fermi surface (FS) sheets, which enhances magnetic fluctuations responsible for superconducting pairing, thus leading t…
We fabricate van der Waals heterostructure devices using few unit cell thick Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ for magnetotransport measurements. The superconducting transition temperature and carrier density in atomically thin samples can be maintained to close to that of the bulk samples. As in the bulk sample, the sign of the Hall conductivity is found to be opposite to the normal state near the transition temperature but with a drastic enlargement of the region of Hall sign reversal in the temperature-magnetic field phase diagram as the thickness of samples decreases. Quantitative analysis of …
Dynamical behavior of vortices plays central roles in the quantum phenomena of two-dimensional (2D) superconductors. Quantum metallic state, for example, showing an anomalous temperature-independent resistive state down to low-temperatures, has been a common subject in recently developed 2D crystalline superconductors, whose microscopic origin is still under debate. Here, we unveil a new aspect of the vortex dynamics in a noncentrosymmetric 2D crystalline superconductor of MoS$_{2}$ through the nonreciprocal transport measurement. The second harmonic resistance $R^{2w}$ at low temperature with…
We propose a minimal lattice model for two-dimensional class DIII superconductors with $C_2$-protected higher-order topology. While this class of superconductors cannot be topologically characterized by symmetry eigenvalues at high symmetry momenta, we propose a simple Wannier-orbital-based real-space diagnosis to unambiguously capture the corresponding higher-order topology. We further identify and characterize a variety of conventional topological phases in our minimal model, including a weak topological superconductor and a nodal topological superconductor with chiral-symmetry protection. T…
The classical Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer and Eliashberg theories of the electron-phonon-mediated superconductivity are based on the Migdal theorem, which is an assumption that the energy of charge carriers, $k{_B}T{_F}$, significantly exceeds the phononic energy, $\hbar{ω{_D}} $, of the crystalline lattice. This assumption, which is also known as adiabatic approximation, implies that the superconductor exhibits fast charge carriers and slow phonons. This picture is valid for pure metals and metallic alloys because these superconductors exhibit $\hbar{ω{_D}}$/$k{_B}T{_F}<0.01$. However, n-type d…
Short review of the topical comprehension of the superconductor materials classes Cuprate High-Temperature Superconductors, other oxide superconductors, Iron-based Superconductors, Heavy-Fermion Superconductors, Nitride Superconductors, Organic and other Carbon-based Superconductors and Boride and Borocarbide Superconductors, featuring their present theoretical understanding and their aspects with respect to technical applications.
The difference between the phases of superconducting order parameter plays in superconducting circuits the role similar to that played by the electrostatic potential difference required to drive a current in conventional circuits. This fundamental property can be altered by inserting in a superconducting circuit a particular type of weak link, the so-called Josephson $π$-junction having inverted current-phase relation and enabling a shift of the phase by $π$. We demonstrate the operation of three superconducting circuits -- two of them are classical and one quantum -- which all utilize such $π…
In this work, we show that a quasi-one-dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is a topological superconductor (TS). This time-reversal invariant DIII class TS supports two topologically protected zero energy Majorana fermions at each end of the system. In contrast to proposals using s-wave superconductors in which a strong magnetic field and the fine tuning of the chemical potential are needed to create Majorana fermions, in our proposal, the topologically non-trivial regime can be reached in the absence of a magnetic field and in a wide range of chemical…
Topological superconductors possess a nodeless superconducting gap in the bulk and gapless zero energy modes, known as "Majorana zero modes", at the boundary of a finite system. In this work, we introduce a new class of topological superconductors, which are protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry and thus dubbed "topological nonsymmorphic crystalline superconductors". We construct an explicit Bogoliubov-de Gennes type of model for this superconducting phase in the D class and show how Majorana zero modes in this model are protected by glide symmetry. Furthermore, we generalize the cla…
We propose a Z$_2$ index theorem for a generic topological superconductor in class D. Introducing a particle-hole symmetry breaking term depending on a parameter and regarding it as a coordinate of an extra dimension, we define the index of the zero modes and corresponding topological invariant for such an extended Hamiltonian. It is shown that these are related with the number of the zero modes of the original Hamiltonian modulo two.
We study a new type of three-dimensional topological superconductors that exhibit Majorana zero modes (MZM) protected by a magnetic group symmetry, a combined antiunitary symmetry composed of a mirror reflection and time-reversal. This new symmetry enhances the noninteracting topological classification of a superconducting vortex from $Z_2$ to $Z$, indicating that multiple MZMs can coexist at the end of one magnetic vortex of unit flux. Specially, we show that a vortex binding two MZMs can be realized on the $(001)$-surface of a topological crystalline insulator SnTe with proximity induced BCS…
The era of near-room-temperature superconductivity started after experimental discovery by Drozdov et al (2015 Nature 525 73) who found that compressed H3S exhibits superconducting transition at Tc = 203 K. To date, the record near-room-temperature superconductivity stands with another hydrogen-rich highly compressed compound, LaH10 (Somayazulu et al 2019 Phys. Rev. Lett. 122 027001), which has critical temperature of Tc>240 K. In this paper, we analyse available upper critical field, Bc2(T), data for LaH10 (Drozdov et al 2019 Nature 569 528) and report that this compound in all considered sce…
The second class of high-temperature superconductors (HTSCs), iron-based pnictides and chalcogenides, necessarily contain Fe$_2$$X_2$ ("$X$" refers to a pnictogen or a chalcogen element) layers, just like the first class of HTSCs which possess the essential CuO$_2$ sheets. So far, dozens of iron-based HTSCs, classified into nine groups, have been discovered. In this article, the crystal-chemistry aspects of the known iron-based superconductors are reviewed and summarized by employing "hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB)" concept. Based on these understandings, we propose an alternative route …
We present an exactly solvable extension of the quantum XY chain with longer range multi-spin interactions. Topological phase transitions of the model are classified in terms of the number of Majorana zero modes which are in turn related to an integer winding number. We further find a general relation between the winding number and the number of Majorana fermions at the ends of an open chain. The present class of exactly solvable models belong to the BDI class in the Altland-Zirnbauer classification (A. Altland, M. R. Zirnbauer, Phys. Rev. B (1997) 55 1142) of topological superconductors. We s…
We study theoretically the proximity effect of a one-dimensional metallic quantum wire (in the absence of spin-orbit interaction) lying on top of an unconventional superconductor. Three different material classes are considered as a substrate: (i) a chiral superconductor in class D with broken time-reversal symmetry; a class DIII superconductor (ii) with and (iii) without a nontrivial Z2 number. Interestingly, we find degenerate zero energy Majorana bound states at both ends of the wire for all three cases. They are unstable against spin-orbit interaction in case (i) while they are topological…
Strongly disordered superconductors in a magnetic field display many characteristic properties of type-II superconductivity--- except at low temperatures where an anomalous linear $T$-dependence of the resistive critical field $B_{c2}$ is routinely observed. This behavior violates the conventional theory of superconductivity, and its origin remains a long-standing puzzle. Here we report on systematic measurements of the critical magnetic field and current on amorphous indium oxide films of various levels of disorder. Surprisingly, our measurements show that the $B_{c2}$ anomaly near zero-tempe…
We provide topological classification of possible phases with the symmetry of the planar phase of superfluid $^3$He. Compared to the B-phase (class DIII in classification of Altland and Zirnbauer), it has an additional symmetry, which modifies the topology. We analyze the topology in terms of explicit mappings from the momentum space and also discuss explicitly topological invariants for the B-phase. We further show, how the bulk-boundary correspondence for the 3D B-phase can be inferred from that for the 2D planar phase. A general condition is derived for the existence of topologically stable…
Parity is a fundamental quantum number to classify a state of matter. Materials rarely possess ground states with odd parity. We show that the superconducting state in iron-based superconductors is classified as an odd parity s-wave spin-singlet pairing state in a single trilayer FeAs/Se, the building block of the materials. In a low energy effective model constructed on the Fe square bipartite lattice, the superconducting order parameter in this state is a combination of a s-wave normal pairing between two sublattices and a s-wave $η$-pairing within the sublattices. Parity conservation was vi…
A generic two-dimensional disordered topological superconductor in symmetry class D exhibits rich phenomenology and multiple phases: diffusive thermal metal (DTM), Anderson insulator (AI), and thermal quantum Hall (TQH) phase (a topological superconductor). We numerically investigate the phase diagram of a lattice model of such class D superconductor, specifically focusing on transitions between the phases and the associated universal critical behaviors. We confirm the existence of a tricritical point and its repulsive nature at the point on the phase diagram where the three phases meet. We ch…
In this paper we introduce four Z_2 topological indices zeta_k=0,1 at k=(0,0), (0,pi), (pi, 0), (pi, pi) characterizing 16 universal classes of 2D superconducting states that have translation symmetry but may break any other symmetries. The 16 classes of superconducting states are distinguished by their even/odd numbers of fermions on even-by-even, even-by-odd, odd-by-even, and odd-by-odd lattices. As a result, the 16 classes topological superconducting states exist even for interacting systems. For non-interacting systems, we find that zeta_k is the number of electrons on k=(0,0), (0,pi), (pi…
We present tight-binding models of 3D topological superconductors in class DIII that support a variety of winding numbers. We show that gapless Majorana surface states emerge at their boundary in agreement with the bulk-boundary correspondence. At the presence of a Zeeman field the surface states become gapped and the boundary behaves as a 2D superconductor in class D. Importantly, the 2D and 3D winding numbers are in agreement signifying that the topological order of the boundary is induced by the order of the 3D bulk. Hence, the boundary of a 3D topological superconductor in class DIII can b…
We introduce a simple generalization of the basic holographic superconductor model in which the spontaneous breaking of a global U(1) symmetry occurs via the Stueckelberg mechanism. This more general setting allows tuning features such as the order of the transition. The physical vacuum of the condensed phase and the order of the transition are determined by a detailed analysis of the free energy of the system. For first order transitions, we identify a metastable phase above the critical temperature. In this case, the conductivity shows additional poles, thus suggesting that the condensate ha…
