We estimate the I=0 scalar meson sigma/f_0(600) parameters from pi-pi and gamma-gamma scattering data below 700 MeV using an improved analytic K-matrix model. A fit of the hadronic data gives a complex pole mass M_sigma= 422-i290 MeV, while simultaneous best fits of the gamma-gamma to pi+pi-, pi0pi0 data give a direct width of (0.13+-0.05)keV, a rescattering component of (2.7+-0.4)keV and a total (direct+rescattering) width of (3.9+-0.6)keV. "Running" these results to the physical real axis, the small "direct" gamma-gamma and the large hadronic widths at the "on-shell" mass are compatible with QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR) and some low-energy theorems (LET) expectations for an unmixed lowest mass glueball/gluonium sigma_B of a mass around 1 GeV and a large OZI-violation decay into pi-pi.
We include instanton effects in QCD sum rules for coupled scalar glueballs and mesons. We find a light glueball/sigma as in earlier studies without instantons, but in a lattice-type pure instanton model the light glueball/sigma is not found. In the 1-2 Gev region we now find that lightest I=0 meson, in the region of the f$_o$(1370), has no direct glueball mixing, with the instanton loop replacing the glueball component. The lightest scalar mainly glueball in the region of the f$_o$(1500) is sensitive to the choice of nonperturbative gluonic parameters.
We present a generalized linear sigma model that includes both scalar and pseudoscalar glueballs in addition to a quark-antiquark as well as a four-quark chiral nonet. Utilizing the axial and trace anomalies of QCD (at the effective mesonic level), we aim to develope the most general structure of the Lagrangian which can be used to study the interaction of quarkonia with glueballs. We then study the effect of scalar glueball on the vacuum of the model by considering a decoupling limit in which the glueball fields are decoupled from quarkonia. This determines the properties of the pure scalar g…
We present a two-flavour linear sigma model with global chiral symmetry and (axial-)vector mesons as well as an additional glueball degree of freedom. We study the structure of the well-established scalar resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500): by a fit to experimentally known decay widths we find that f0(1370) is predominantly a \bar{q}q state and f0(1500) is predominantly a glueball state. The overall phenomenology of these two resonances can be well described. Other assignments for our mixed quarkonium-glueball states are also tested, but turn out to be in worse agreement with the phenomenology. …
Recently the D$^+$ charm meson was observed to have a clear branching ratio into the low energy $π-π$ sigma resonance, while this channel was not detected in the D$_s^+$ decay. It is shown that this is consistent with the standard treatment of exclusive charm meson decays and a proposed glueball/sigma picture.
It has long been believed that the Pomeron, which has been successful in phenomenological fits to high energy scattering data, is associated with gluonic exchange. By determining the Regge-nucleon vertex in terms of previously determined glueball-quark coupling we show that the Pomeron might be related to the Regge trajectory defined by a light scalar glueball/sigma system and a tensor glueball, which involves complicated nonperturbative QCD. We predict a tensor glueball at 2.8 GeV.
We discuss the mixing between the sigma meson sigma and the "pure" glueball field H and study the decays of the scalar glueball candidates f_0(1370), f_0(1500) and f_0(1710) (a linear combination of sigma and H) into two pions in an effective linear sigma model.
We formulate an extended linear $σ$ model of a quarkonia nonet and a tetraquark nonet as well as a complex iso-singlet (glueball) field to study the low-lying scalar meson. Chiral symmetry and $U_A(1)$ symmetry and their breaking play important role to shape the scalar meson spectrum in our work. Based on our study we will comment on what may be the mass of the lowest possible scalar and pseudoscalar glueball states. We will also discuss on what may be the nature of the sigma or $f_0(600)$ meson.
We study the interaction of scalar glueball with quark-antiquark and four-quark spinless meson fields within the framework of a generalized linear sigma model in which the trace anomaly of QCD is exactly realized. To determine the pure scalar glueball mass ($m_h$), we consider the decoupling limit in which the scalar glueball decouples from the meson fields. We find the exact relationship $m_h = 2\, h_0$ where $h_0$ is the vacuum expectation value of the scalar glueball field independent of the properties of the framework used.
We examine the mixing between the sigma meson $σ$ and the "pure" glueball field $H$ and study the decays of the scalar glueball candidate $f_0(1500)$ (a linear combination of $σ$ and $H$) into two and four pions in effective linear sigma model. From recent experimental data on $f_0(1500)$ decay to pions we point out that the mixing angle is of order of 0.1.
In the framework of the so-called extended linear sigma model (eLSM), we include a pseudoscalar glueball with a mass of 2.6 GeV (as predicted by Lattice-QCD simulations) and we compute the two- and three-body decays into scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. This study is relevant for the future PANDA experiment at the FAIR facility. As a second step, we extend the eLSM by including the charm quark according to the global $U(4)_R \times U(4)_L$ chiral symmetry. We compute the masses, weak decay constants and strong decay widths of open charmed mesons. The precise description of the decays of open ch…
A collective treatment of the I=0 scalar mesons below 2 GeV [sigma (550), f0(980), f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710)] in a non-linear chiral Lagrangian framework that is constrained by the mass and the partial decay widths of the I=1/2,1 scalars [kappa(900), K0*(1430), a0(980) and a0(1450)] is presented. The sub-structure of these states in terms of two and four quark components, as well as a glueball component is explored, and its correlation with the mass of f0(1370) is studied. Consistency with the available experimental data suggests that the sigma(550) is dominantly a non-strange four-quark…
We suggest a theoretical framework for the description of double photon and proton-antiproton photoproduction off the proton gamma + p -> 2 gamma + p and gamma + p -> antip + p + p which takes into account the contribution of the scalar mesons f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710). These scalars are considered as mixed states of a glueball and nonstrange and strange quarkonia. Our framework is based on the use of effective hadronic Lagrangians that phenomenologically take into account two-gluon exchange effects governing the gamma + p -> 2 gamma + p and gamma + p -> antip + p + p processes. Present …
We extract the pole positions, hadronic and gamma-gamma widths of sigma and f_0(980, from pi-pi and gamma-gamma scattering data using an improved analytic K-matrix model. Our results favour a large gluon component for the sigma and a \bar ss or/and gluon component for the f_0(980) but neither a large four-quark nor a molecule component. Gluonium sigma_B production from J/psi, phi radiative and D_s semi-leptonic decays are also discussed.
The lightest gluonic meson is expected with J^{PC}=0^{++}, calculations in full QCD point towards a mass of around 1 GeV. The interpretation of the scalar meson spectrum is hindered as some states are rather broad. In a largely model-independent analysis of pi+ pi- \to pi+ pi-, pi0 pi0 scattering in the region 600-1800 MeV a unique solution for the isoscalar S-wave is obtained. The resonances f_0(980), f_0(1500) and the broad f_0(600) or ``sigma'' are clearly identified whereas f_0(1370) is not seen at the level B(f_0(1370)\to pi pi)\gtrsim 10%. Arguments for the broad state to be a glueball a…
The omega-phi threshold peak observed by BES in J/Psi -> gamma(omega-phi) may be interpreted quantitatively in terms of a glueball component in fo(1790).
We study the vacuum properties of the pseudoscalar glueball and charmed mesons by using the so-called extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM). This model includes scalar and pseudoscalar mesons, as well as vector and axial-vector mesons. We calculate the mesonic and baryonic decays of the pseudoscalar glueball, where we fixed its mass to $2.6$ GeV, as predicted by lattice-QCD simulations, and take a closer look at the scalar-isoscalar decay channel. As a second step, we enlarge the so-called extended linear Sigma model (eLSM) by including the charm quark to a global $U(4)_r\times U(4)_l$ chiral sym…
We argue that the chiral phase transition and the deconfinement phase transition in finite temperature QCD are just different limits of a single crossover phase transition driven by the lightest scalar field which is a mixture of the glueball and the sigma meson. The key mechanism, the level repulsion between the sigma and the glueball, gives not only a unified description of the finite temperature phase transitions, but also a consistent characterization of the entire QCD phase diagram in the temperature-quark mass plane.
We present a chiral effective model which exhibits all the known symmetry features of the QCD Lagrangian. The extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) includes (pseudo-)scalar and (axial-) vector mesons, glueballs, and baryons. It has proven to be a useful tool to understand the nature of the low-energy resonances. It can be used to describe the masses and decay widths of the known low-energy mesons and to disentangle the complicated picture of resonances in the low-energy range. We can answer some of the open questions in the low-energy region, e.g. the resonance (f_0(1500)) is a predominantly glue…
In the framework of the extended Linear Sigma Model (eLSM) we investigate the masses and decays of the three scalar-isoscalar resonances $f_{0}(1370)$, $f_{0}(1500)$ and $f_{0}(1710)$. The degrees of freedom of the eLSM are (pseudo)scalars and (axial)vectors as well as the scalar glueball. Although still preliminary, present results, based on the physical masses of the above mentioned resonances, show that $f_{0}(1710)$ is the predominantly glueball state. However, acceptable decays for this resonance can be obtained only for a (very) large gluon condensate.
Using an improved "analytic K-matrix model", we reconsider the extraction of the sigma/f_0(600) and f_0(980) gamma-gamma widths from gamma-gamma to pi-pi scatterings data of Crystal Ball and Belle. Our main results are summarized in Tables 3 and 4. The averaged sigma "direct width" to gamma-gamma is 0.16(3) keV which confirms a previous result of [1] and which does neither favour a large four-quark (diquark-antidiquark) nor a molecule nor a pure \bar qq component. The "direct width" of the f_0(980) of 0.28(2) keV is much larger than the four-quark expectation but can be compatible with a \bar …
We extract the K+K- couplings of the isoscalar scalar mesons sigma/f_0(600) and f_0(980) from pi pi to pi pi / K K scatterings and found: |g_{sigma K+K-}|/ |g_{sigma pi+pi-}|= 0.8 and |g_{f_0 K+K-}|/ |g_{f_0 pi+pi-}|= 1.7. These results, together with the tiny "direct" gamma gamma width of the sigma and its large hadronic width, are a strong indication for the gluonium/glueball nature of the sigma-meson, as predicted by QCD spectral sum rules (QSSR) + some low-energy theorems (LET), while some other assignements (pi pi molecule, tetraquark state and ordinary qq meson) do not satisfy simultaneo…
Using the U(3)R x U(3)L extended Linear Sigma Model with the ordinary (pseudo)scalar and (axial)vector mesons as well as a scalar glueball, we study the vacuum phenomenology of the scalar-isoscalar resonances f0(1370), f0(1500) and f0(1710). We present here a solution, based only on the masses and not yet on decays, in which the resonances f0(1370) and f0(1500) are predominantly nonstrange and strange qbar-q states respectively, and the resonance f0(1710) is predominantly a scalar glueball.
We study the phenomenology of the ground-state (pseudo-)scalar charmonia $η_c$ and $χ_{c0}$ in the framework of a $U(4)_r \times U(4)_l$ symmetric linear sigma model with (pseudo-)scalar and (axial-) vector mesons. Based on previous results for the spectrum of charmonia and the spectrum and (OZI-dominant) strong decays of open charmed mesons, we extend the study of this model to OZI-suppressed charmonia decays. This includes decays into 'ordinary' mesons but also particularly interesting channels with scalar-isoscalar resonances $f_0(1370),\, f_0(1500),\, f_0(1710)$ that may include sizeable c…
Scalar glueball is implemented in single nonet linear sigma model (SNLSM) which basically includes lowest lying scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. Our new version of SNLSM involves mixing among scalar matter fields and glueball field which is enforced by scale symmetry considerations and the associated anomaly. Performing iterative Monte Carlo simulations, it is found that among the three candidates of scalar glueball, i.e., $f_0(1370)$, $f_0(1500)$ and $f_0(1710)$, only $f_0(1500)$ is predominately a glueball state with the mass prediction of $1.566 \pm 0.046$ GeV and the other two are predomina…
We show that the electric glueball becomes critical at the end-point of the deconfinement phase transition in finite temperature QCD. Based on this observation and existing lattice data, we argue that the chiral phase transition at a zero quark mass and the deconfinement phase transition at an infinite quark mass are continuously connected by the glueball-sigma mixing.
The evidence for the low mass J^{PC}=0^{++} states is reconsidered. We suggest classifying the isoscalars f_0(980) and f_0(1500) as members of the 0^{++} nonet, with a mixing rather similar to that of the pseudoscalars η' and η. The broad state called f_0(400-1200) or `sigma'' and the state f_0(1370) are considered as different signals from a single broad resonance, which we take to be the lowest-lying 0^{++} glueball. The main arguments in favor of these hypotheses are presented and compared with theoretical expectations.
Given a resonance of known mass, width, and J^{PC}, we can determine its gluonic branching fraction, b(R->gg), from data on its production in radiative vector quarkonium decay, V -> gamma+R. For most resonances b(R->gg) is found to be O(10%), consistent with being q-qbar states, but we find that both pseudoscalars observed in the 1440 MeV region have b(R->gg) ~ 1/2 - 1, and b(f_0^{++}->gg) ~ 1/2. As data improves, b(R->gg) should be a useful discriminator between q-qbar and gluonic states and may permit quantitative determination of the extent to which a particular resonance is a mixture of gl…
A parametrisation of the real photon structure function F_2^gamma in the low Q^2, low x region is formulated. It includes both the VMD and the QCD components, the latter suitably extrapolated to the low Q^2 region and based on arbitrary parton distributions in the photon. The parametrisation used together with the GRV and GRS' parton densities describes reasonably well the existing high energy data on F_2^gamma, sigma(gamma, gamma) and the low Q^2 data on sigma(gamma^*, gamma). Predictions for sigma(gamma, gamma) and for sigma(gamma^* ,gamma) for energies which may become accessible in future li…
We develop an ansatze of the sigma enhancement of the I=0, L=0 $π$-$π$ scattering amplitude as arising from a low-energy glueball pole. Using this picture we estimate the $π^0π^0$ to $π^0$ branching ratio for the decays of the Roper resonance, which we previously found to be a hybrid in our QCD sum rule calculation. We find that the sigma decay might be a good signal for gluonic components of hadrons.
For a long time doubts have existed on the existence of the f0(1370) meson as an individual object distinct and separated from the sigma meson. Decays into two charged pions of the f0(1370) are the main source of an isolated structure localized between 1.2 and 1.5 GeV in the two charged pions mass spectrum measured in pp Central Exclusive Production (CEP) at 200 GeV at very low four momentum transfer squared ltl. These data confirm in the two charged pions decay channel the existence of the f0(1370) as an isolated well identified structure that was previously observed in K+K-, KsKs, 4 neutral …
We discuss the classification of the light scalar mesons with mass below 2 GeV into q qbar nonets and glueballs. The information on production and decay of these states, in particular recent information on f_0(980), f_0(400-1200) (or sigma(600)) and f_0(1500) is considered. Although the data are not yet very precise the recent information is in favour of the previously developed scheme which includes f_0(980), a_0(980), K_0^*(1430), f_0(1500) into the lightest scalar nonet. The glueball in this approach appears as broad object around 1 GeV. Alternative schemes find the glueball at somewhat hig…
We consider the two-flavor version of the extended linear sigma model (eLSM), which contains (pseudo)scalar and (axial-)vector quark-antiquark mesons, a scalar glueball (predominantly corresponding to $f_{0}(1710)$), as well as the nucleon and its chiral partner. We extend this model by the additional light scalar meson $f_{0}(500)$, predominantly a putative four-quark state. We investigate various interaction terms of the four-quark and glueball states with the other particles, some of which preserve and some of which explicitly break the $U(1)_{\textrm{A}}$ symmetry. We test our model by per…
The ALLM parameterization of sigma_{tot}(gamma* p) has been updated by using all published F_2 data to determine its parameters. The fit yields a chi^2/ndf of 0.97 for the 1356 data points. The updated ALLM parameterization, ALLM97, gives a good description of all the available data in the whole x and Q^2 range studied so far (3\times10^{-6} < x < 0.85, 0 \le Q^2 < 5000 GeV^2).
The process gamma* gamma -> sigma is investigated in the framework of the SU(2)xSU(2) chiral NJL model. The form factor of the process is derived for arbitrary virtuality of gamma* in the Euclidean kinematic domain. The asymptotic behaviour of this form factor resembles the asymptotic behaviour of the gamma* gamma -> pi form factor.
The gamma + D -> Lambda + Theta+ and gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ reactions can be used to determine the width of Theta+ almost model-independently. We calculate the differential cross sections of the gamma +D -> Lambda + Theta+, gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ and relevant background reactions in the photon energy range 1.2 < E_γ < 2.6 GeV. We determine the most favorable kinematic conditions and observables for the experimental studies of Theta+ in the considered processes. We argue that a comparison of the gamma + D -> Lambda + Theta+ and gamma + D -> Sigma + Theta+ cross sections should unambig…
We reanalyse the gamma-gamma scattering data and conclude that in the mass region below 1 GeV the cross section for gamma-gamma to pi^0-pi^0 can be largely explained by the one pion exchange process with pi-pi rescattering. The radiative width of the sigma is estimated and a model dependent separation into contributions from direct gamma-gamma decay and decay through rescattering is obtained. We confront these findings with QCD spectral sum rule (QSSR) predictions and conclude that the sigma can have a large gluonium component in its wave function.
In this talk, we report the theoretical studies of baryon resonances for the gamma p ---> K*0 Sigma+ and gamma p ---> K*+ Sigma0 reaction processes by making use of the effective Lagrangian method in the tree-level Born approximation. The numerical results for the total and differential cross sections are shown with the presently available data. It turns out that the contributions from the N* and Delta* resonances are almost negligible near the threshold energy. On the other hand, the effects of the K exchange in the t channel and Delta(1232) in the s channel are considerably larger than other…
Various parametrizations of sigma(gamma p) are tried out on the small-x fixed target and HERA data. A two-Pomeron type parametrization is found to give the best reproduction of the data. The data indicate that the value of lambda(eff) for parametrizations of the form sigma(gamma p)~l^lambda(eff) approaches a constant value at high Q^2. The extrapolated values of sigma(gamma p) to very long coherence lengths are found to cross in some parametrizations for l>10^7 fm, indicating the possibility that sigma(gamma p) becomes Q^2 independent at large values of the coherence length l.
The coupling constant g_{rho sigma gamma} is determined from light cone QCD sum rules. A comparison of our result with the ones existing in literature is presented.
The lightest QCD resonance, the sigma, has been recently fixed in the pi-pi scattering amplitude. The nature of this state remains nowadays one of the most intriguing and difficult issues in particle physics. Its coupling to photons is crucial to discriminate its structure. We propose a new method that fixes this coupling using only available precise experimental data on the proton electromagnetic polarizabilities together with analyticity and unitarity. Taking into account the uncertainties in the analysis and in the parameter values, our result is Gamma_{pole}(sigma -> gamma gamma) = (1.2 +-…
We show that therecently observed pion invariant mass distribution of the phi ->pi0 pi0 gamma decay can be satisfactorily described by the chiral U(3) X U(3) Linear Sigma Model.
We propose a new method that fixes the coupling to two photons of the recently found lightest QCD resonance, the sigma. This coupling provides crucial information for discriminating the yet unknown nature of this special state. Our method uses available data on the nucleon polarizabilities together with analyticity and unitarity. Taking into account all the uncertainties, our result is Gamma_{pole}= 1.2 +- 0.4 keV.
We calculate the branching ratio of omega --> pi^+ pi^- gamma decay in a phenomenological framework in which the contributions of VMD, chiral loops, sigma-meson intermediate state amplitudes and the effects of omega-rho mixing are considered. We conclude that the sigma-meson intermediate state amplitude and omega-rho mixing make substantial contribution to the branching ratio.
The reaction gamma p --> K0 Sigma+ was measured in the photon energy range from threshold up to 2.6 GeV with the SAPHIR detector at the electron stretcher facility, ELSA, in Bonn. Results are presented on the reaction cross section and the polarization of the Sigma+ as a function of the kaon production angle in the centre-of-mass system, cos(Theta_K^{c.m.}), and the photon energy. The cross section is lower and varies less with photon energy and kaon production angle than that of gamma p --> K+ Sigma0. The Sigma+ is polarized predominantly at cos(Theta_K^{c.m.}) \approx 0. The data presented h…
A variety of strong and electroweak interaction properties of the pion and the light scalar sigma meson are computed in a relativistic quark model. Under the assumption that the resulting coupling of these mesons to the constituent quarks is identical, the sigma meson mass is determined as M_sigma=385.4 MeV. We discuss in detail the gauging of the non-local meson-quark interaction and calculate the electromagnetic form factor of the pion and the form factors of the pi(0) -> gamma gamma and sigma -> gamma gamma processes. We obtain explicit expressions for the relevant form factors and evaluate…
The complementarity between Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Linear Sigma Model in the scalar channel is exploited to study $π^0π^0$ production in $ρ$ and $ω$ radiative decays, where the effects of a low mass scalar resonance $σ(500)$ should manifest. The recently reported data on $ρ\toπ^0π^0γ$ seem to require the contribution of a low mass and moderately narrow $σ(500)$. The properties of this controversial state could be fixed by improving the accuracy of these measurements. Data on $ω\toπ^0π^0γ$ can also be accommodated in our framework, but are much less sensitive to the $σ(500)$ propert…
We present an analysis on the exclusive rare radiative decay modes Sigma_b->Sigma gamma and Xi_b->Xi gamma. The transition form factors which parameterize these processes are calculated using QCD light-cone sum rules. The decay widths we predict are Gamma(Sigma_b->Sigma gamma)=(7.21\pm0.04)\times10^{-18}GeV} and Gamma(Xi_b->Xi gamma)=(1.34\pm0.07)\times10^{-16}GeV. The Branching ratio of Xi_b->Xi gamma is predicted to be Br(Ξ_b->Xi gamma)=(3.03\pm0.10)\times10^{-4}.
The parametrisation of the photon structure function in the low Q^2 region is formulated. It includes the VMD contribution and the QCD improved parton model component suitably extrapolated to the low Q^2 region. The parametrisation describes reasonably well existing experimental data on sigma_{γγ} for real photons and the low Q^2 data on sigma_{γ^* γ}. Predictions for sigma_{γγ} and for sigma_{γ^* γ} for energies which may be accesssible in future linear colliders are also given.
We calculate the CP-violating polarization asymmetry of tt-bar, delta =[ sigma(ee-bar --> t(-)t-bar(-))-sigma(ee-bar --> t(+)t-bar(+)) ]/ sigma(ee-bar --> tt-bar), for the most general tt-bar gamma/Z couplings without dropping any non-standard contribution. We find that one term which is usually neglected increases with s and will eventually become non-negligible at very high energy.
We calculate the P0 to gamma gamma, V0 to P0 gamma and V0to V'0 gamma gamma decays in the framework of a U(3)xU(3) linear sigma model which includes constituent quarks. For the first two decays this approach improves results based on the anomalous Wess-Zumino term, with contributions due to SU(3) symmetry breaking and vector mixing. The phi to (omega, rho) gamma gamma decays are dominated by resonant eta' exchange . Our calculation for the later decays improves and update similar calculations in the -closely related- framework of vector meson dominance. We obtain BR(phi to rho gamma gamma)=2.5x…
We analyse the angular distributions of the Sigma^0 --> Lambda^0 + gamma decay rate in the laboratory and in the rest frame of the Sigma^0 - hyperon in the dependence on baryon polarizations. We calculate the dynamical polarization vector of the Lambda^0 - hyperon. Within the Effective quark model with chiral U(3) x U(3) symmetry (PRC 59, 451 (1999)) we calculate the transition magnetic moment mu_(Sigma^0 Lambda^0). The theoretical value mu_(Sigma^0 Lambda^0) = - 1.62, measured in nuclear magnetons, agrees well with the experimental data |mu^(\exp)_(Sigma^0 Lambda^0)| = (1.61 +/-0.08) and the …
We study the theoretical predictions for the total inelastic $γγ$ cross-sections, with an emphasis on the eikonalised minijet model (EMM). In the context of the EMM, we discuss a new ansatz for the overlap function involving the photons. We discuss the dependence of the EMM predictions on various input parameters as well as predictions for \siggg from a simple extension of the Regge Pomeron Exchange model. We then compare both with the recent LEP data.
Kaon photoproductions on the proton gamma p --> K+Sigma0 and gamma p --> K0Sigma+ have been simultaneously analyzed by using isobar models and new SAPHIR data. The result shows that isobar models such as KAON MAID require more resonances in order to explain the data.
In their 1997 paper, CDF measured sigma_effective, the normalization factor that relates the cross section for double parton scattering to the product of the inclusive cross sections of the two individual scatters, in a model in which they are assumed to be independent. In his 2007 paper, Treleani pointed out that CDF used a non-standard definition, in which the double parton scattering cross section corresponds to exactly two scatters, rather than the more conventional one in which it is the inclusive two-scatter cross section. He also estimated the correction from one definition to the other…
We replace ordinary chiral SU(3)_L * SU(3)_R perturbation theory CHPT_3 by a new theory CHPT_sigma based on a low-energy expansion about an infrared fixed point alpha_IR for 3-flavor QCD. At alpha_IR, the quark condensate <bar{q}q>_vac =\= 0 induces nine Nambu-Goldstone bosons: pi, K, eta and a 0++ QCD dilaton sigma. Physically, sigma appears as the f_0(500) resonance, a pole at a complex mass with real part < m_K. The ΔI = 1/2 rule for nonleptonic K-decays is then a consequence of CHPT_sigma, with a K_S-sigma coupling fixed by data for K_S^0 --> gamma gamma and gamma gamma --> pi pi. We estim…
Using an eikonal analysis, we examine the validity of the factorization theorem for nucleon-nucleon, gamma p and gamma gamma collisions. As an example, using the additive quark model and meson vector dominance, we directly show that for all energies and values of the eikonal, that the factorization theorem sigma_{nn}/sigma_{gamma p} = sigma_{gamma p}/sigma_{gamma gamma} holds. We can also compute the survival probability of large rapidity gaps in high energy pbar p and pp collisions. We show that the survival probabilities are identical (at the same energy) for gamma p and gamma gamma collisio…
Fermilab E781 plans measurements of gamma-Sigma and $γ$-pion interactions using a 600 GeV beam of Sigmas and pions, and a virtual photon target. Pion polarizabilities and radiative transitions will be measured in this experiment. The former can test a precise prediction of chiral symmetry; the latter for a_1(1260) ----> pi + gamma is important for understanding the polarizability. The experiment also measures polarizabilities and radiative transitions for Sigma hyperons. The polarizabilities can test predictions of baryon chiral perturbation theory. The radiative transitions to the Sigma*(1385…
Preliminary results of the analysis of the reaction p(gamma,K0)Sigma+ are presented. We show the first measurement of the differential cross section and much improved data for the total cross section than previous data. The data are compared with model predictions from different isobar and quark models that give a good description of p(gamma,K+)Lambda and p(gamma,K+)Sigma0 data in the same energy range. Results of ChPT describe the data adequately at threshold while isobar models that include hadronic form factors reproduce the data at intermediate energies.
