The Galaxy Mass Assembly ultra-deep Spectroscopic Survey samples a part of the CDFS to unprecedented depth. The resulting distribution of 150 z>1.4 redshifts reveals a significant peak at z=1.6, part of a larger overdensity found at this redshift. The 42 spectroscopic members of this structure, called Cl 0332-2742, form an overdensity in redshift of a factor 11+/-3 and have a velocity dispersion of 450 km/s. We derive a total mass for Cl 0332-2742 of ~7x10^14 Msol. The colours of its early-type galaxies are consistent with a theoretical red sequence of galaxies with stars formed at z=3.0. In addition, there are more massive, passive and older, but less star forming galaxies in CL 0332-2742 than in the field. We conclude that this structure is a cluster under assembly at z=1.6.
One of the main questions of galaxy formation is how and when galaxies assembled their mass. Observations suggest that most mass assembly and star formation occured at 1 < z < 3. However, in the same redshift range, fully assembled old and massive galaxies co-exist with star-bursting systems still in their assembling stage. In order to explore galaxy evolution in this critical redshift range, we started a project called GMASS (Galaxy Mass Assembly ultra-deep Spectroscopic Survey) based on an 145 hours ESO Large Program and aimed at doing ultradeep spectroscopy with the VLT of a sample of high …
Context: Galaxy metallicities have been measured to redshift z~2 by gas-phase oxygen abundances of the interstellar medium using the R23 and N2 methods. Galaxy stellar metallicities provide crucial data for chemical evolution models but have not been assessed reliably much outside the local Universe. Aims: We determine the iron-abundance, stellar metallicity of star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at redshift z~2, observed as part of the Galaxy Mass Assembly ultra-deep Spectroscopic Survey (GMASS). Methods: We compute the equivalent width of a rest-frame mid-ultraviolet, photospheric absorption-line i…
The aim of this work is to study the evolution of the rest frame color distribution of galaxies with the redshift, in particular in the critical interval 1.4<z<3. We combine ultradeep spectroscopy from the GMASS project (Galaxy Mass Assembly ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey) with GOODS multi-band photometry (from optical to mid-infrared) to study a sample of 1021 galaxies up to m(4.5$μ$m)=23. We find that the distribution of galaxies in the (U-B) color vs stellar mass plane is bimodal up to at least redshift z=2. We define a mass complete sample of galaxies residing on the red-sequence, selectin…
We combine ultradeep optical spectroscopy from the GMASS project ("Galaxy Mass Assembly ultradeep Spectroscopic Survey") with GOODS multi-band photometry and HST imaging to study a sample of passive galaxiesat 1.39<z<1.99 selected at 4.5 microns. A stacked spectrum with an equivalent integration time of ~500 hours was obtained is publicly released. The spectral and photometric SED properties indicate very weak or absent star formation, moderately old stellar ages of ~1 Gyr (for solar metallicity) and stellar masses in the range of 10^{10-11} solar masses, thus implying that the major star form…
We report the discovery of a galaxy overdensity at z=1.11 associated with the z=1.110 high-redshift radio galaxy MG0442+0202. The group, CL0442+0202, was found in a near-infrared survey of z>1 radio galaxies undertaken to identify spatially-coincident regions with a high density of objects red in I-K' color, typical of z>1 elliptical galaxies. Spectroscopic observations from the Keck telescope reveal five galaxies within 35" of MG0442+0202 at 1.10<z<1.11. These member galaxies have broad-band colors and optical spectra consistent with passively-evolving elliptical galaxies formed at high redsh…
We present the results of spectroscopic observations of galaxies associated with the diffuse X-ray emitting structure discovered by Zappacosta et al. (2002). After measuring the redshifts of 161 galaxies, we confirm an overdensity of galaxies with projected dimensions of at least 2 Mpc, determine its spectroscopic redshift in z=0.401+/-0.002, and show that it is spatially coincident with the diffuse X-ray emission. This confirms the original claim that this X-ray emission has an extragalactic nature and is due to the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM). We used this value of the redshift to c…
The Canis Major overdensity (CMa) was initially proposed to be the remnant of a tidally disrupting dSph galaxy. Since its nature is still subject of debate, the goal of the present work was to conduct a large-scale RR Lyrae survey in CMa, in order to see if there is an overdensity of these stars. The survey spans a total area of ~34 sq. deg. with observations in V and R filters, made with the 1.0m Jurgen Stock Schmidt telescope at the National Astronomical Observatory of Venezuela. Current results in a subregion, including spectroscopic observations, show that the small number of RR Lyrae star…
We present grism spectra taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys to identify 29 red sources with (i'-z') > 0.9 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). Of these 23 are found to be galaxies at redshifts between z=5.4 and 6.7, identified by the break at 1216 angstrom due to IGM absorption; two are late type dwarf stars with red colors; and four are galaxies with colors and spectral shape similar to dust reddened or old galaxies at redshifts z~1-2. This constitutes the largest uniform, flux-limited sample of spectroscopically confirmed galaxies at such faint fluxes z'<27.5. Many are also among t…
We present the results of Chandra observations of the Cl1604 supercluster at z~0.9. The system is the largest structure mapped at redshifts approaching unity, containing at least eight spectroscopically confirmed galaxy clusters and groups. Using two 50-ksec ACIS-I pointings we examine both the X-ray point source population and the diffuse emission from individual clusters in the system. We find a 2.5σexcess of point sources detected in the hard band (2-10 keV) relative to the number of sources found in blank fields observed by Chandra. No such excess is observed in the soft band (0.5-2 keV). …
We study the mean environments of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as a function of rest-frame luminosity and color. Overdensities in galaxy number are estimated in $8 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$ and $1 h^{-1} \mathrm{Mpc}$ spheres centered on $125,000$ galaxies taken from the SDSS spectroscopic sample. We find that, at constant color, overdensity is independent of luminosity for galaxies with the blue colors of spirals. This suggests that, at fixed star-formation history, spiral-galaxy mass is a very weak function of environment. Overdensity does depend on luminosity for galaxies with the re…
We present the catalogue of a wide-field CFHT/WHT spectroscopic survey of the lensing cluster Cl0024+1654 at z=0.395. This catalogue contains 618 new spectra, of which 581 have identified redshifts. Adding redshifts available from the literature, the final catalogue contains data for 687 objects with redshifts identified for 650 of them. 295 galaxies have redshifts in the range 0.37<z<0.41, i. e. are cluster members or lie in the immediate neighbourhood of the cluster. The area covered by the survey is 21x25 arcmin2 in size, corresponding to 4x4.8 h^-2 Mpc2 at the cluster redshift. The survey …
We have studied the spatial clustering of high redshift (z > 1) extremely red objects (EROs) as a function of photometric redshift in the GOODS Southern Field using public data. A remarkable overdensity of extremely red galaxies (I-Ks > 4) is found at an average photometric redshift z=1.10. Nine objects (six are EROs) within 50 arcsec of the brightest infrared galaxy in this overdensity present spectroscopic redshifts in the range 1.094 < z < 1.101 with a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 433 km/s typical of an Abell richness class R=0 cluster. Other potential members of this cluster, desig…
We present deep HST/ACS observations in g,r,i,z towards the z=4.1 radio galaxy TN J1338-1942 and its overdensity of >30 spectroscopically confirmed Lya emitters (LAEs). We select 66 g-band dropouts to z=27, 6 of which are also a LAE. Although our color-color selection results in a relatively broad redshift range centered on z=4.1, the field of TN J1338-1942 is richer than the average field at the >5 sigma significance, based on a comparison with GOODS. The angular distribution is filamentary with about half of the objects clustered near the radio galaxy, and a small, excess signal (2 sigma) in…
We present new constraints on the evolution of the early-type galaxy color-magnitude relation (CMR) based on deep near-infrared imaging of a galaxy protocluster at z=2.16 obtained using NICMOS on-board the Hubble Space Telescope. This field contains a spectroscopically confirmed space-overdensity of Lyman-alpha and H-alpha emitting galaxies which surrounds the powerful radio galaxy MRC 1138-262. Using these NICMOS data we identify a significant surface-overdensity (= 6.2x) of red J-H galaxies in the color-magnitude diagram (when compared with deep NICMOS imaging from the HDF-N and UDF). The op…
We present a new, objectively selected, sample of galaxy overdensities detected in the Hubble Space Telescope Medium Deep Survey. These clusters/groups were found using an automated procedure which involved searching for statistically significant galaxy overdensities. The contrast of the clusters against the field galaxy population is increased when morphological data is used to search around bulge-dominated galaxies. In total, we present 92 overdensities above a probability threshold of 99.5%. We show, via extensive Monte Carlo simulations, that at least 60% of these overdensities are likely …
We present evidence for a significant overdensity of red galaxies, as much as a factor of 14 over comparable field samples, in the field of the z=1.47 radio galaxy B3 0003+387. The colors and luminosities of the brightest red galaxies are consistent with their being at z>0.8. The radio galaxy and one of the red galaxies are separated by 5" and show some evidence of a possible interaction. However, the red galaxies do not show any strong clustering around the radio galaxy nor around any of the brighter red galaxies. The data suggest that we are looking at a wall or sheet of galaxies, possibly a…
We report the first results of a spectroscopic survey of galaxies in the core of the Shapley Concentration, the richest nearby supercluster of clusters of galaxies. We have measured 311 new galaxy redshifts in an area of $\sim 4.5$ square degrees centered around the Abell cluster A3558. Considering also the data already available in the literature, the total number of galaxy redshifts in this area amounts to more than 500. On the basis of these data we estimate the mean velocities and the velocity dispersions of the Abell clusters A3556, A3558 and the poor cluster SC 1329 -314. Finally, from a…
We present observations of redshifted CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) in a field containing an overdensity of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=5.12. Our Australia Telescope Compact Array observations were centered between two spectroscopically-confirmed z=5.12 galaxies. We place upper limits on the molecular gas masses in these two galaxies of M(H_2) <1.7 x 10^10 M_sun and <2.9 x 10^9 M_sun (2 sigma), comparable to their stellar masses. We detect an optically-faint line emitter situated between the two LBGs which we identify as warm molecular gas at z=5.1245 +/- 0.0001. This source, detected in the CO(2-1…
We present five newly found galaxy clusters at z>0.6 from the XMM Large-Scale Structure Survey (XMM-LSS). All five objects are extended X-ray sources in the XMM images. For three of them we have sufficient spectroscopically confirmed member galaxies that an estimate of the velocity dispersion is possible: XLSSC 001 at z=0.613 and σ_V=867^{+80}_{-60} km/s, XLSSC 002 at z=0.772 and σ_V=524^{+267}_{-116} km/s and XLSSC 003 at z=0.839 and σ_V=780^{+137}_{-75} km/s. These three clusters have X-ray bolometric luminosities L_X \sim 1-3 \times 10^{44} erg/s and temperatures 2-4 keV, and consequently a…
We report the discovery of primeval large-scale structures (LSSs) including two proto-clusters in a forming phase at z=5.7. We carried out extensive deep narrow-band imaging in the 1 deg^2 sky of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field, and obtained a cosmic map of 515 Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) in a volume with a transverse dimension of 180 Mpc x 180 Mpc and a depth of ~40 Mpc in comoving units. This cosmic map shows filamentary LSSs, including clusters and surrounding 10-40 Mpc scale voids, similar to the present-day LSSs. Our spectroscopic follow-up observations identify overdense regions in which t…
We present HST/ACS observations of the most distant radio galaxy known, TN J0924-2201 at z=5.2. This radio galaxy has 6 spectroscopically confirmed Lya emitting companion galaxies, and appears to lie within an overdense region. The radio galaxy is marginally resolved in i_775 and z_850 showing continuum emission aligned with the radio axis, similar to what is observed for lower redshift radio galaxies. Both the half-light radius and the UV star formation rate are comparable to the typical values found for Lyman break galaxies at z~4-5. The Lya emitters are sub-L* galaxies, with deduced star fo…
We report the detection of a 4/h70 Mpc long large-scale filament leading into the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The extent of this object well beyond the cluster's nominal virial radius (~2.3 Mpc) rules out prior interaction between its constituent galaxies and the cluster and makes it a prime candidate for a genuine filament as opposed to a merger remnant or a double cluster. The structure was discovered as a pronounced overdensity of galaxies selected to have V-R colors close to the cluster red sequence. Extensive spectroscopic follow-up of over 300 of these galaxies in a region …
We present a search for spatial and redshift correlations in a 2 A resolution spectroscopic survey of the Lyman alpha forest at 2.15 < z < 3.37 toward ten QSOs concentrated within a 1-degree diameter field. We find a signal at 2.7 sigma significance for correlations of the Lyman alpha absorption line wavelengths between different lines of sight over the whole redshift range. The significance rises to 3.2 sigma if we restrict the redshift range to 2.60 < z < 3.37, and to 4.0 sigma if we further restrict the sample to lines with rest equivalent width 0.1 <= W0/(A) < 0.9. We conclude that a signi…
We present the clustering of DEEP2 galaxies at 0.7<z<1.4 around quasars identified using both the SDSS and DEEP2 surveys. We measure the two-point cross-correlation of a sample of 36 optically-selected, spectroscopically-identified quasars from the SDSS and 16 more found in the DEEP2 survey with the full DEEP2 galaxy sample over scales 0.1 < r_p < 10 Mpc/h. The clustering amplitude is found to be similar to the auto-correlation function of DEEP2 galaxies, with a relative bias of b=0.89 +/-0.24 between quasars and DEEP2 galaxies at z~1. No significant dependence is found on scale, quasar lumino…
