We present observations of redshifted CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) in a field containing an overdensity of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z=5.12. Our Australia Telescope Compact Array observations were centered between two spectroscopically-confirmed z=5.12 galaxies. We place upper limits on the molecular gas masses in these two galaxies of M(H_2) <1.7 x 10^10 M_sun and <2.9 x 10^9 M_sun (2 sigma), comparable to their stellar masses. We detect an optically-faint line emitter situated between the two LBGs which we identify as warm molecular gas at z=5.1245 +/- 0.0001. This source, detected in the CO(2-1) transition but undetected in CO(1-0), has an integrated line flux of 0.106 +/- 0.012 Jy km/s, yielding an inferred gas mass M(H_2)=(1.9 +/- 0.2) x 10^10 M_sun. Molecular line emitters without detectable counterparts at optical and infrared wavelengths may be crucial tracers of structure and mass at high redshift.
We discuss our recent results on the statistical properties of damped Lyman alpha systems (DLAs) at low redshift (z<1.65) (Rao & Turnshek 2000). Contrary to expectations, we found that the cosmological neutral gas mass density as traced by DLAs, $Ω_{DLA}$, does not evolve from redshifts $z \approx 4$ to $z \approx 0.5$ and that extrapolation to z=0 results in a value that is a factor of ~6.5 times higher than what is derived from galaxies at the current epoch using HI 21 cm emission measurements. We review the current status of HI measurements at low redshift and at the current epoch, and disc…
We present full resolution (~0.2mas, ~0.1 A.U.) Very Long Baseline Interferometry maps of the v=1, J=1-0 SiO masers in the Orion-KL nebula. The morphology and turbulent nature of the maser emission argues against models in which the masers form in an expanding and rotating protostellar disk. Rather, we find that the symmetry evident in the SiO maser emission points towards its genesis in a bipolar outflow. Water masers which also appear towards Orion-KL are known to share the velocity profile and double peaked characteristics of the SiO maser emission yet form much further away from the protos…
Surveys of redshifted emission lines in the near-infrared will provide unique information on the cosmic star formation history. Near-infrared Halpha surveys will probe the cosmic star formation density and the evolution of the luminosity function of star forming galaxies out to z\sim2.5, including the important z=1.5-2.0 epoch, where according to current knowledge the cosmic star formation density peaks. Halpha and other hydrogen recombination lines (except Lyman alpha) and [O II] are all useful tracers of star formation provided the luminosity function is probed to sufficiently deep levels. H…
The iron abundance relative to alpha-elements in the circumnuclear region of quasars is regarded as a clock of the star formation history and, more specifically, of the enrichment by SNIa. We investigate the iron abundance in a sample of 22 quasars in the redshift range 3.0<z<6.4 by measuring their rest frame UV FeII bump, which is shifted into the near-IR, and by comparing it with the MgII 2798 flux. The observations were performed with a device that can obtain near-IR spectra in the range 0.8-2.4 um in one shot, thereby enabling an optimal removal of the continuum underlying the FeII bump. W…
Highly collimated jets found in AGB and post-AGB stars are expected to play an important role for shaping planetary nebulae. Recent VLBI observations of H2O maser sources have revealed that some of the spatio-kinematical structures of H2O maser sources exhibit stellar jets with extremely spatially and kinematically high collimation. Such stellar H2O maser jets, so-called "water fountain" sources, have been identified in about 10 sources to date. Here we review recent VLBI observations and relevant observational results of the water fountain sources. They have revealed a typical dynamical age a…
An initially highly biased value of the spatial correlation function, which decreases with time up to a transition redshift z_t ~ 1-2, was predicted theoretically at least as early as 1993, and shown to be consistent with the HDF-N angular correlation function estimates in 1997. Observational analyses are presented here which show (i) an HDF-N estimate of the correlation function amplitude of galaxies selected at z ~ 2 (by the UV drop-{\em in} technique), which supports the estimate z_t ~ 2 and (ii) an HDF-N estimate of the correlation function amplitude of galaxies selected at z ~ 3.7 by usin…
We present high resolution, mid-infrared images toward three hot molecular cores signposted by methanol maser emission; G173.49+2.42 (S231, S233IR), G188.95+0.89 (S252, AFGL-5180) and G192.60-0.05 (S255IR). Each of the cores was targeted with Michelle on Gemini North using 5 filters from 7.9 to 18.5 microns. We find each contains both large regions of extended emission and multiple, luminous point sources which, from their extremely red colours (F[18.5]/F[7.9] >= 3), appear to be embedded young stellar objects. The closest angular separations of the point sources in the three regions are 0.79,…
We have imaged the central ~1kpc of the circumnuclear starburst disk in the galaxy NGC253 in the HCN(1-0), HCO+(1-0), and CO(1-0) transitions at 60pc resolution using the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Millimeter-Wavelength Array (OVRO). We have also obtained Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) observations of the HCN(4-3) and the HCO+(4-3) lines of the starburst disk. We find that the emission from the HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) transitions, both indicators of dense molecular gas, trace regions which are non-distinguishable within the uncertainties of our observations. Even though the continuum …
We present an 11 arcsec resolution map of the central two parsecs of the Galaxy in the CO J =7->6 rotational transition. The CO emission shows rotation about Sgr A*, but also evidence for non-circular turbulent motion and a clumpy morphology. We combine our dataset with available CO measurements to model the physical conditions in the disk. We find that the molecular gas in the region is both warm and dense, with T~200-300 K, n_H2~50,000-70,000 cm^-3. The mass of warm molecular gas we measure in the central two parsecs is at least 2000 M_solar, about 20 times the UV-excited atomic gas mass, ru…
We compare observed clustering of quasars and galaxies as a function of redshift, mass, luminosity, & color/morphology, to constrain models of quasar fueling and spheroid-BH co-evolution. High redshift quasars are shown to be drawn from progenitors of local early-type galaxies, with the characteristic quasar luminosity L* reflecting a characteristic mass of 'active' BH/host populations at each redshift. Evolving observed high-z quasar clustering to z=0 predicts a trend of clustering in 'quasar remnants' as a function of stellar mass identical to that observed for early-types. However, quasar c…
We present observations of the (1,1), (2,2), (4,4) and (5,5) inversion transitions of para-ammonia (NH3) and 24 GHz continuum, taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array toward 21 southern Galactic hot molecular cores traced by 6.7 GHz methanol maser emission. We detect NH3(1,1) emission toward all 21 regions and 24 GHz continuum emission toward 12 of the regions, including 6 with no reported 8 GHz continuum counterparts. In total, we find the 21 regions contain 41 NH3(1,1) cores. We extract characteristic spectra for every core at each of the NH3 transitions and present both integrated …
We present new interferometer observations of the 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission of NGC 1068 with a resolution of 0.7''. The molecular gas in the inner 5'' is resolved into a ring with two bright knots east and west of the nuclear continuum emission. For the first time in NGC 1068, we can trace molecular gas at ~0.18'' (13pc) from the nucleus. The high velocities in this region imply an enclosed mass of ~10^8 M_solar. This value is consistent with a black hole mass of 1.7x10^7 M_solar plus a contribution from a compact nuclear stellar cluster. Perpendicular to the kinematic major axis o…
I review the current status of an on-going investigation into the stellar and dynamical ages of the oldest known galaxies at redshifts greater than 1. The spectroscopic data, when compared with the predictions of a range of recent evolutionary synthesis models, continue to indicate that the oldest galaxies at z = 1.5 are already at least 3 Gyr old. Moreover, comparison with new models which incorporate chemical evolution, suggests that this result may be less sensitive to the assumed metallicity than was previously suspected. Such ages should therefore be taken seriously as constraints both on…
We have mapped the warm molecular gas traced by the H_2 S(0) - H_2 S(5) pure rotational mid-infrared emission lines over a radial strip across the nucleus and disk of M51 (NGC 5194) using the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. The six H_2 lines have markedly different emission distributions. We obtained the H_2 temperature and surface density distributions by assuming a two temperature model: a warm (T = 100 - 300 K) phase traced by the low J (S(0) - S(2)) lines and a hot phase (T = 400 - 1000 K) traced by the high J (S(2) - S(5)) lines. The lowest molecular gas temper…
Millimetre-band scans of the frequency space towards optically dim quasars is potentially a highly efficient method for detecting new high redshift molecular absorption systems. Here we describe scans towards 7 quasars over wide bandwidths (up to 23 GHz) with sensitivity limits sufficient to detect the 4 redshifted absorbers already known. With wider frequency bands, highly efficient searches of large numbers of possibly obscured objects will yield many new molecular absorbers.
A brief overview is given of the current status of molecular emission line observations at high redshift. New observations are presented of CO in the gravitationally lensed quasar MG 0414+0534 (detected) and the unlensed quasar PG 1634+706 (not detected). Also noted are the results of a partially completed search for water maser emission in several redshift bands above z=0.4.
We have made radio- and millimeter-wavelength interferometric observations of a variety of molecular absorption lines toward the gravitational lens systems B0218+357 and PKS1830-211. The absorption occurs in the lensing galaxies at redshifts of 0.685 and 0.89, respectively. The high spatial resolution of our VLA and VLBA observations allows imaging of the background continuum emission and the absorption distribution. Our multi-transition studies yield estimates of the cosmic microwave background temperature at z = 0.89 and determinations of molecular and isotopic abundance ratios, which allow …
The four known molecular absorption line systems at redshifts z$=$0.25--0.89 are discussed. Two of the systems originate in the galaxy hosting the `background' AGN, while in two cases the absorption occurs in truely intervening galaxies. Indirect evidence for the existence of very small scale structure in the molecular ISM is presented. A new absorption line at z$=$0.89 towards PKS1830--211 opens up interesting possibilities to accurately derive the mass of the lensing galaxy.
Distribution and kinematics of molecular gas in the central region of the barred spiral galaxy Maffei 2 were investigated using a data set of 12CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1), CS(2-1) lines and 103 GHz continuum. We found that the offset ridges along the kpc-scale bar continue to the central spiral structure embedded in the weak oval structure which is regarded as x2 orbit in the bar potential. The spiral structure continues toward the center diverging from the oval structure. The size of these structures is less than R ~ 100 pc. The mass concentration within R = 35 pc is estimated to be 2 X 10^8 Mo. The …
Models are presented for CO rotational line emission by high redshift starburst galaxies. The influence of the cosmic microwave background on the thermal balance and the level populations of atomic and molecular species is explicitly included. Predictions are made for the observability of starburst galaxies through line and continuum emission between z=5 and z=30. It is found that the Millimeter Array could detect a starburst galaxy with ~10^5 Orion regions, corresponding to a star formation rate of about 30 Mo yr^{-1}, equally well at z=5 or z=30 due to the increasing cosmic microwave backgro…
We have analyzed the spectrum of the quasar PKS 1232+082 obtained by Petitjean et al. (2000). HD molecular lines are identified in an absorption system at the redshift z=2.3377. The column density of HD molecules in the system is estimated, N(HD)=(1-4)x10^{14} cm^{-2}. The temperature of excitation of the first rotational level J=1 relative to the ground state J=0 is T_ex=70+-7 K. This is, to our knowledge, the first detection of HD molecules at high redshift.
We present observations of the luminous population of high-redshift sub-mm galaxies taken at the OVRO Millimeter Array. Studies of sub-mm galaxies are vital to our understanding of the formation and early evolution of galaxies since this population could account for a significant fraction of the total amount of star formation and AGN activity at high redshift. We discuss the CO detections for SMM J02399-0136 at z=2.8 and SMM J14011+0252 at z=2.6. The CO data show the presence of massive molecular gas reservoirs (M(H2) few X 10^{10}-10^{11} M(sun)) and suggest that the sub-mm galaxies are simil…
We review cm and mm observations of thermal molecular line emission from high redshift QSOs. These observations reveal the massive gas reservoirs (10^{10} to 10^{11} M_sun) required to fuel star formation at high rates. We discuss evidence for active star formation in QSO host galaxies, and we show that these high redshift, FIR-luminous QSOs follow the non-linear trend of increasing L_{FIR}/L'(CO) with increasing L_{FIR}. We conclude with a brief discussion of the recent CO detection of the most distant QSO at z=6.42, and its implications for cosmic reionization.
Observations of the molecular gas phase in quasar host galaxies provide fundamental constraints on galaxy evolution at the highest redshifts. Molecular gas is the material out of which stars form; it can be traced by spectral line emission of carbon--monoxide (CO). To date, CO emission has been detected in more than a dozen quasar host galaxies with redshifts (z) larger 2, the record holder being at z=4.69. At these distances the CO lines are shifted to longer wavelengths, enabling their observation with sensitive radio and millimetre interferometers. Here we present the discovery of CO emissi…
The sample of nearby LIRGs and ULIRGs for which dense molecular gas tracers have been measured is building up, allowing for the study of the physical and chemical properties of the gas in the variety of objects in which the most intense star formation and/or AGN activity in the local universe is taking place. This characterisation is essential to understand the processes involved, discard others and help to interpret the powerful starbursts and AGNs at high redshift that are currently being discovered and that will routinely be mapped by ALMA. We have studied the properties of the dense molecu…
A detailed study of the absorbing molecular clouds towards the radio source PKS1413+135, at a redshift z=0.247, is reported. Physical conditions are derived for the molecular gas in the frame work of two models: a homogeneous multicomponent model with equal filling factors, and a two-phase medium consisting of dense clumps embedded in a more diffuse component. Our absorption data are consistent with the presence of a diffuse gas component, dominating the observed opacity, and a dense component, accounting for most of the mass. We show that without knowledge of the small scale structure of the …
We describe initial results of a search for redshifted molecular absorption toward four millimetre-loud, optically faint quasars. A wide frequency bandwidth of up to 23 GHz per quasar was scanned using the Swedish-ESO Sub-millimetre Telescope at La Silla. Using a search list of commonly detected molecules, we obtained nearly complete redshift coverage up to z_abs=5. The sensitivity of our data is adequate to have revealed absorption systems with characteristics similar to those seen in the four known redshifted millimetre-band absorption systems, but none were found. Our frequency-scan techniq…
Strong constraints on possible variations in fundamental constants can be derived from HI 21-cm and molecular rotational absorption lines observed towards quasars. With the aim of forming a statistical sample of constraints we have begun a program of systematic searches for such absorption systems. Here we describe molecular rotational searches in 25 damped Lyman-alpha systems where, in many cases, we set optical depth limits an order of magnitude better than that required to detect the 4 known redshifted millimeter-wave absorbers. We also discuss the contributory factors in the detectability …
This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most of their gas reservoir into stars, far-infrared luminous high-z radio galaxies are likely undergoing immense bursts of star formation, possibly accounting for a large fraction of the final stellar populat…
We present results of an extensive search for molecular gas in 14 high redshift ($z>2$) radio galaxies. Radio galaxies with redshifts between 2.0 and 4.3 were observed during several sessions on two different single-dish telescopes (IRAM and JCMT) and two interferometric arrays (VLA and OVRO). No significant CO emission to a 2$σ$ limit of a few times 10^{10} K km s^{-1} pc^2 was detected in any of these objects. The limits on the CO emission achieved indicate that, assuming a CO-H$_2$ conversion factor similar to the Galactic value, the mass of enriched molecular gas in these galaxies is less …
We report the detection of emission from dust and carbon monoxide in the radio-quiet quasar BR1202--0725 at redshift z=4.7. Maps of these emissions reveal two objects separated by a few arc seconds, which could indicate either the presence of a companion to the quasar or gravitational lensing of the quasar itself. Regardless of the precise interpretation of the maps, the detection of carbon monoxide confirms the presence of a large mass of molecular gas in one of the most distant galaxies known, and shows that conditions conducive to huge bursts of star formation existed in the early Universe.
We present an alternative interpretation of the observations of BR1202-0725 at z=4.695 and show that its properties are consistent with a relativistic jet, issuing from the quasar core, propagating into the inter-galactic medium and triggering star formation along its path. Prompted by this finding, we reviewed all the z>3 objects detected in molecular line emission and found that the distribution of gas and dust in these sources is often spatially or kinematically offset from the host galaxy, and preferentially aligned along the radio axis. These observations suggest to us a scenario in which…
We are currently undertaking a large survey for redshifted atomic and molecular absorption ... only one clear and one tentative detection were obtained: HI absorption at z = 0.097 in PKS 1555-140 and OH absorption at z =0.126 in PKS 2300-189, respectively... In order to determine why no clear molecular absorption was detected in any of the 13 sources searched, we investigate the properties of the five redshifted systems currently known to exhibit OH absorption. In four of these, molecules were first detected via millimetre-wave transitions and the flat radio spectra indicate compact background…
Molecular hydrogen is an important component of galaxies because it fuels star formation and accretion onto AGN, the two processes that generate the large infrared luminosities of gas-rich galaxies. Observations of spectral-line emission from the tracer molecule CO are used to probe the properties of this gas. But the lines that have been studied in the local Universe, mostly the lower rotational transitions of J = 1-0 and J = 2-1, have hitherto been unobservable in high-redshift galaxies. Instead, higher transitions have been used, although the densities and temperatures required to excite th…
The Early Universe Molecular Emission Line Galaxies (EMGs) are a population of galaxies with only 36 examples that hold great promise for the study of galaxy formation and evolution at high redshift. The classification, luminosity of molecular line emission, molecular mass, far-infrared (FIR) luminosity, star formation efficiency, morphology, and dynamical mass of the currently known sample are presented and discussed. The star formation rates derived from the FIR luminosity range from about 300 to 5000 M(sun)per year and the molecular mass from 4 x 10^9 to 1 x 10^{11} M(sun). At the lower end…
GRB050904 is the gamma-ray burst with the highest measured redshift. We performed time resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the late GRB and early afterglow emission. We find robust evidence for a decrease with time of the soft X-ray absorbing column. We model the evolution of the column density due to the flash ionization of the GRB and early afterglow photons. This allows us to constrain the metallicity and geometry of the absorbing cloud. We conclude that the progenitor of GRB050904 was a massive star embedded in a dense metal enriched molecular cloud with Z~0.03 Z_solar. This is the first local …
We compare the distribution of molecular gas and star formation activity in the bar region of six spirals (NGC 2903, NGC 3627, NGC 4321, NGC 5457, NGC 6946, & IC 342) from the BIMA Survey of Nearby Galaxies (SONG). The molecular gas, traced using the CO (J=1--0) emission line, is brightest along the leading edge of the stellar bar in the bar dust lanes. The star formation activity, traced using the Halpha emission line, is offset towards the leading side of the CO emission. A cross-correlation analysis shows that a) the HII regions are offset 0--800 pc on the leading side of the CO emission, b…
We have identified an obvious and strong large scale structure at redshift z=5.75 in a wide (31 by 33 arcminute) field, narrowband survey of the Chandra Deep Field South region. This structure is traced by 17 candidate Lyman alpha emitters, among which 12 are found in an 823nm filter (corresponding to Lyman alpha at z=5.77 +- 0.03) and 5 in an 815nm image (z=5.70 +- 0.03). The Lyman alpha emitters in both redshift bins are concentrated in one quadrant of the field. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field, Chandra Deep Field South, and GOODS-South fields all lie near the edge of this overdense region. Our …
Hydrogen cyanide emission in the J=1-0 transition has been detected at redshift z=2.2858 in IRAS F10214+4724 using the Green Bank Telescope . This is the second detection of HCN emission at high redshift. The large HCN line luminosity in F10214 is similar to that in the Cloverleaf (z=2.6) and the ultra-luminous infrared galaxies Mrk231 and Arp220. This is also true of the ratio of HCN to CO luminosities. The ratio of far-infrared luminosity to HCN luminosity, an indicator of the star formation rate per solar mass of dense gas, follows the correlation found for normal spirals and infrared lumin…
Rapid progress is now being made in the study of stellar populations of galaxies at large lookback times, both in dense clusters and the field. Dramatic transformations in star formation histories (even morphologies) appear to prevail among all types of galaxies and in all environments, and these can be traced to relatively recent times (z ~ 0.2). This article updates to December 1998 a review made in 1994 to cover the recent watershed of observational results emerging from the Hubble Deep Field and deep surveys made with large ground-based telescopes.
The efficiency of star formation governs many observable properties of the cosmological galaxy population, yet many current models of galaxy formation largely ignore the important physics of star formation and the interstellar medium (ISM). Using hydrodynamical simulations of disk galaxies that include a treatment of the molecular ISM and star formation in molecular clouds (Robertson & Kravtsov 2008), we study the influence of star formation efficiency and molecular hydrogen abundance on the properties of high-redshift galaxy populations. In this work, we focus on a model of low-mass, star for…
We study the formation of molecular hydrogen on dust grain surfaces and apply our results to the high redshift universe. We find that a range of physical parameters, in particular dust temperature and gas temperature, but not so much dust surface composition, influence the formation rate of H$_2$. The H$_2$ formation rate is found to be suppressed above gas kinetic temperatures of a few hundred K and for dust temperatures above 200-300 K and below 10 K. We highlight the differences between our treatment of the H$_2$ formation process and other descriptions in the literature. We also study the …
We present an analysis of the Lyman alpha forests of five quasar spectra in the near UV. Properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at an intermediate redshift interval (0.9 < z < 1.9) are studied. The amount of baryons in the diffuse photoionised IGM and the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) are traced to get constraints on the redshift evolution of the different phases of the intergalactic gas. The baryon density of the diffuse IGM is determined with photoionisation calculations under the assumption of local hydrostatic equilibrium. We assume that the gas is ionised by a metagalactic ba…
We present here the sensitive HCN(1-0) observations made with the VLA of two submillimeter galaxies and two QSOs at high-redshift. HCN emission is the signature of dense molecular gas found in GMC cores, the actual sites of massive star formation. We have made the first detection of HCN in a submillimeter galaxy, SMM J16359+6612. The HCN emission is seen with a signal to noise ratio of 4$σ$ and appears to be resolved as a double-source of $\approxlt 2''$ separation. Our new HCN observations, combined with previous HCN detections and upper limits, show that the FIR/HCN ratios in these high reds…
We present Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) observations of OH absorption in B3~1504+377 ($z \sim 0.673$) and PKS 1413+135 ($z \sim 0.247$). OH has now been detected in absorption towards four intermediate redshift systems, viz. the lensing galaxies towards B~0218+357 ($z \sim 0.685$; Kanekar et al. 2001) and 1830-211 ($z \sim 0.886$; Chengalur et al. 1999), in addition to the two systems listed above. All four systems also give rise to well studied millimetre wavelength molecular line absorption from a host of molecules, including HCO$^+$. Comparing our OH data with these millimetre lin…
We investigate the relative distribution of the gaseous contents of the Universe (as traced by a sample of Lyman alpha (lya) absorbers), and the luminous baryonic matter (as traced by a redshift survey of galaxies in the same volume searched for lya absorbers), along 16 lines-of-sight (LOS) between redshifts 0 and 1. Our galaxy redshift survey was made with the Multi-Object Spectrograph (MOS) on Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) and, when combined with galaxies from the literature in the same LOS, gives us a galaxy sample of 636 objects. By combining this with an absorption line sample of …
We present high-resolution VLA observations of the molecular gas in the host galaxy of the highest redshift quasar currently known, SDSS J1148+5251 (z=6.42). Our VLA data of the CO(3-2) emission have a maximum resolution of 0.17'' x 0.13'' (~1 kpc), and enable us to resolve the molecular gas emission both spatially and in velocity. The molecular gas in J1148+5251 is extended to a radius of 2.5 kpc, and the central region shows 2 peaks, separated by 0.3'' (1.7 kpc). These peaks account for about half of the total emission, while the remainder is more extended. Each of these unresolved peaks con…
We have identified a large-scale structure traced by galaxies at z=0.8, within the Lockman Hole, by means of multi-object spectroscopic observations. By using deep XMM images we have investigated the soft X-ray emission from the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) expected to be associated with this large-scale structure and we set a tight upper limit to its flux in the very soft 0.2-0.4 keV band. The non-detection requires the WHIM at these redshifts to be cooler than 0.1 keV. Combined with the WHIM emission detections at lower redshift, our result indicates that the WHIM temperature is rapi…
Using the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), we have detected the (J,K) = (1,1) to (10,10) ammonia inversion lines, up to 1030 K above the ground state, in a face-on spiral galaxy viewed against the radio continuum of the lensed background source PKS 1830-211. The ammonia absorption lines, seen at redshift 0.886, appear to be optically thin with absolute peak flux densities up to 2.5 percent of the total continuum of the background source. Measured intensities are consistent with a kinetic temperature of 80 K for 80-90 percent of the ammonia column. The remaining gas is warmer, reaching at least 600 …
We present new spectroscopic observations of an old case of anomalous redshift--NGC 7603 and its companion. The redshifts of the two galaxies which are apparently connected by a luminous filament are z=0.029 and z=0.057 respectively. We show that in the luminous filament there are two compact emission line objects with z=0.243 and z=0.391. They lie exactly on the line traced by the filament connecting the galaxies. As far as we are aware, this is the most impressive case of a system of anomalous redshifts discovered so far.
