We present the results of Chandra observations of the Cl1604 supercluster at z~0.9. The system is the largest structure mapped at redshifts approaching unity, containing at least eight spectroscopically confirmed galaxy clusters and groups. Using two 50-ksec ACIS-I pointings we examine both the X-ray point source population and the diffuse emission from individual clusters in the system. We find a 2.5σexcess of point sources detected in the hard band (2-10 keV) relative to the number of sources found in blank fields observed by Chandra. No such excess is observed in the soft band (0.5-2 keV). The hard-band source density is 1.47 times greater than that of a blank field, in agreement with the previously reported correlation between overdensity amplitude and cluster redshift. Using a maximum likelihood technique we have matched 112 of the 161 detected X-ray point sources to optical counterparts and found 15 sources that are associated with the supercluster. All 15 sources have rest-frame luminosities consistent with emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find that the supercluster AGN largely avoid the densest regions of the system and are instead distributed on the outskirts of massive clusters or within poorer clusters and groups. We have also detected diffuse emission from two of the eight clusters and groups in the system, clusters Cl1604+4304 and Cl1604+4314. The systems have bolometric luminosities of 1.43x10^44 and 8.20x10^43 h70^-2 erg s^-1 and gas temperatures of 3.50 (+1.82-1.08) and 1.64 (+0.65-0.45) keV, respectively. Using updated velocity dispersions, we compare the properties of these systems to the cluster scaling relations followed by other X-ray and optically selected galaxy clusters at high redshift.
We construct an analytic model for the mass distributions of superclusters and clusters in each supercluster. Our model is a modification of the Press-Schechter theory, and defines superclusters as the regions that have some overdensity smaller than those for usual virialized objects. We compare the mass functions with a catalog of superclusters in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Early Data Release and found that they are in reasonable agreement with each other.
(abridged) We present the results of a redshift survey of intercluster galaxies in the central region of the Shapley Concentration supercluster, aimed at determining the distribution of galaxies in between obvious overdensities. Our sample is formed by 442 new redshifts, mainly in the b_J magnitude range 17-18.8. Adding the data from our redshift surveys on the A3558 and A3528 complexes, which are close to the geometrical centre of this supercluster, we obtain a total sample of ~2000 radial velocities. Using the 1440 galaxies of our total sample in the magnitude range 17 - 18.8, we reconstruct…
We present new radial velocities for 306 bright (R<16) galaxies in a 77 square deg region of the Shapley supercluster measured with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. The galaxies we measured were uniformly distributed over the survey area in contrast to previous samples which were concentrated in several rich Abell clusters. Most of the galaxies (230) were members of the Shapley supercluster: they trace out two previously unknown sheets of galaxies linking the Abell clusters of the supercluster. In a 44 square deg area of the supercluster excluding the Abell clusters, thes…
Large-scale structure calculations show that modest overdensity filaments will connect clusters of galaxies and these filaments are reservoirs of baryons, mainly in gaseous form. To determine whether such filaments exist, we have examined the UV absorption line properties of three AGNs projected behind possible filaments in superclusters of galaxies; the AGNs lie within 3 Mpc of the centerlines of loci connecting clusters. All three lines of sight show absorption in Lyα, Lyβ, or/and OVI at redshifts within about 1300 km/s of the nearby galaxy clusters that would define the closest filaments. F…
We present an analysis of a mosaic of ROSAT PSPC and Einstein Observatory IPC X-ray observations of 14 clusters and 2 groups of galaxies, enclosed in a sky area 15 degrees by 20 degrees centred on A3558 within the Shapley Supercluster region. From the mass of each cluster, extrapolated to a density contrast of 500, we define 4 large structures: (1) the core of the Shapley Supercluster with radius 13 $h_{50}^{-1}$ Mpc; (2) the core plus A1736; (3) the core, A1736 and the western extension (A3528-A3530-A3532) and A3571; and (4), adding the northern cluster pair A1631-A1644 to structure (3), the …
We present the results of a redshift survey of both cluster and intercluster galaxies in the central part of the Shapley Concentration, the richest supercluster of clusters in the nearby Universe, consisting of ~2000 radial velocities. We estimate the total overdensity in galaxies of the supercluster and its mass and we discuss the cosmological implications of these results. Moreover, using a Principal Components Analysis technique, we study the influence of the cluster and supercluster dynamics on the galaxy spectral morphology.
We have investigated the peculiar motions of clusters of galaxies in the Ursa Major (UMa) supercluster and its neighborhood. Based on SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey) data, we have compiled a sample of early-type galaxies and used their fundamental plane to determine the cluster distances and peculiar velocities. The samples of early-type galaxies in the central regions (within R_200) of 12 UMa clusters of galaxies, in three main subsystems of the supercluster -- the filamentary structures connecting the clusters, and in nine clusters from the nearest UMa neighborhood have similar parameters. T…
(Abridged) We present a study of the structure and dynamics of the Corona Borealis Supercluster (z ~ 0.07) based on the redshifts for 528 galaxies in the supercluster. The galaxy distribution within Corona Borealis is clumpy and appears overall to be far from relaxed. A background supercluster at z ~ 0.11 makes a substantial contribution to the projected surface density of galaxies in the Corona Borealis field. In order to estimate the mass of the supercluster, we have assumed that the mass of the supercluster is proportional to v^2r, where v and r are suitable scale velocity and radius, respe…
We have identified an obvious and strong large scale structure at redshift z=5.75 in a wide (31 by 33 arcminute) field, narrowband survey of the Chandra Deep Field South region. This structure is traced by 17 candidate Lyman alpha emitters, among which 12 are found in an 823nm filter (corresponding to Lyman alpha at z=5.77 +- 0.03) and 5 in an 815nm image (z=5.70 +- 0.03). The Lyman alpha emitters in both redshift bins are concentrated in one quadrant of the field. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field, Chandra Deep Field South, and GOODS-South fields all lie near the edge of this overdense region. Our …
We study the distribution of galaxies and galaxy clusters in a 10^deg x 6^deg field in the Aquarius region. In addition to 63 clusters in the literature, we have found 39 new candidate clusters using a matched-filter technique and a counts-in-cells analysis. From redshift measurements of galaxies in the direction of these cluster candidates, we present new mean redshifts for 31 previously unobserved clusters, while improved mean redshifts are presented for 35 other systems. About 45% of the projected density enhancements are due to the superposition of clusters and/or groups of galaxies along …
We present the results from a multi-band optical imaging program which has definitively confirmed the existence of a supercluster at z = 0.91. Two massive clusters of galaxies, CL1604+4304 at z = 0.897 and CL1604+4321 at z = 0.924, were originally observed in the high-redshift cluster survey of Oke, Postman & Lubin (1998). They are separated by 4300 km/s in radial velocity and 17 arcminutes on the plane of the sky. Their physical and redshift proximity suggested a promising supercluster candidate. Deep BRi imaging of the region between the two clusters indicates a large population of red galax…
We present results from a Chandra X-ray Observatory study of the field X-ray source populations in 4 different observations: two high-redshift (z~0.5) clusters of galaxies 3C295 and RXJ003033.2+261819; and two non-cluster fields with similar exposure time. Surprisingly, the 0.5-2 keV source surface densities (~900-1200 sources deg**-2 at a flux limit of 1.5x10**-15 erg cm**-2s**-1) measured in an ~8'x8' area surrounding each cluster exceed by a factor of ~2 the value expected on the basis of the ROSAT and Chandra logN-logS, with a significance of ~2 sigma each, or ~3.5 sigma when the 2 fields …
We present a statistical analysis of the Chandra observation of the source field around the 3C 295 galaxy cluster ($z=0.46$). Three different methods of analysis, namely a chip by chip logN-logS, a two dimentional Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test, and the angular correlation function (ACF) show a strong overdensity of sources in the North-East of the field, that may indicate a filament of the large scale structure of the Universe toward 3C 295.
We present results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 285 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC), based on a set of 10529 velocity measurements (including 1201 new ones) on 8632 galaxies obtained from various telescopes and from the literature. Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (v~ 14500 km/s) extends further than previous estimates, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 12~degrees by 30~degrees on the sky (30 x 75~h-1 Mpc). There is also a connecting structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell~3571 cluster complex (v~ 12000km/s. …
We report the discovery of two highly extended filaments and one extremely high density knot within the region of Aquarius. The supercluster candidates were chosen via percolation analysis of the Abell and ACO catalogs and include only the richest clusters (R >= 1). The region examined is a 10x45 degree strip and is now 87% complete in cluster redshift measurements to mag_10 = 18.3. In all, we report 737 galaxy redshifts in 46 cluster fields. One of the superclusters, dubbed Aquarius, is comprised of 14 Abell/ACO clusters and extends 110h^-1Mpc in length only 7 degrees off the line-of-sight. O…
We study the gravitational influence of very large scale structures, as traced by clusters of galaxies, on the Local Group [LG] motion and the large scale flows. We derive from the distribution of Abell clusters within $300~$Mpc/h the overdensity field on a 3--D grid of spacing $5~$Mpc/h, then we solve the Poisson equation for the peculiar potential and finally obtain the peculiar velocity field. Quite interestingly, from this global solution we: i) recover within $\sim 10^o$ the direction of the LG motion in the Cosmic Microwave Background [CMB] frame, ii find that the Great Attractor itself …
We report the discovery of an overdensity of faint red galaxies in the vicinity of the z=1.786 radio galaxy 3C 294. The overdensity, discovered in a 84 min Ks-band ISAAC/VLT image is significant at the 2.4 sigma level (compared to the local field density), and overlaps with the extended X-ray emission around 3C 294 detected with the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The near-infrared colours of the galaxies making up the overdensity show a large scatter and the galaxies do not follow a red sequence in the colour magnitude diagram. If the galaxies are in a cluster at z=1.786 they must be dominated by …
We present the first application of a spherical collapse model to a supercluster of galaxies. Positions and redshifts of $\sim 3000$ galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) are used to define velocity caustics that limit the gravitationally collapsing structure in its central part. This is found to extend at least to $8 h^{-1}$ Mpc of the central cluster, A 3558, enclosing 11 ACO clusters. Infall velocities reach $\sim 2000$ km s$^{-1}$. Dynamical models of the collapsing region are used to estimate its mass profile. An upper bound on the mass, based on a pure spherical infall model, gives …
We report the discovery of a galaxy overdensity at z=1.11 associated with the z=1.110 high-redshift radio galaxy MG0442+0202. The group, CL0442+0202, was found in a near-infrared survey of z>1 radio galaxies undertaken to identify spatially-coincident regions with a high density of objects red in I-K' color, typical of z>1 elliptical galaxies. Spectroscopic observations from the Keck telescope reveal five galaxies within 35" of MG0442+0202 at 1.10<z<1.11. These member galaxies have broad-band colors and optical spectra consistent with passively-evolving elliptical galaxies formed at high redsh…
We present 547 optical redshifts obtained for galaxies in the region of the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster (HRS) using the 6dF multi-fiber spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope at the Anglo Australian Observatory. The HRS covers an area of more than 12deg x 12deg on the sky centered at approximately RA = 03h19m, DEC = -50deg 02amin. Our 6dF observations concentrate upon the inter-cluster regions of the HRS, from which we describe four primary results. First, the HRS spans at least the redshift range from 17,000 to 22,500 km s^-1. Second, the overdensity of galaxies in the inter-cluster r…
We report the discovery of a compact supercluster structure at z=0.9. The structure comprises three optically-selected clusters, all of which are detected in X-rays and spectroscopically confirmed to lie at the same redshift. The Chandra X-ray temperatures imply individual masses of ~5x10^14 Msun. The X-ray masses are consistent with those inferred from optical--X-ray scaling relations established at lower redshift. A strongly-lensed z~4 Lyman break galaxy behind one of the clusters allows a strong-lensing mass to be estimated for this cluster, which is in good agreement with the X-ray measure…
We present a statistical analysis of the Chandra observation of the source field around the 3C 295 galaxy cluster (z=0.46) aimed at the search for clustering of X-ray sources. Three different methods of analysis, namely a chip by chip logN-logS, a two dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and the angular correlation function (ACF) show a strong overdensity of sources in the North-East of the field. In particular, the ACF shows a clear signal on scales of 0.5 - 5 arcmin. This correlation angle is > 2 times higher than that of a sample of 8 ACIS-I field at the 2.5 sigma confidence level. If this …
We present a statistical analysis of the Chandra observation of the source field around the 3C 295 galaxy cluster ($z=0.46$). The logN-logS of this field is in good agreement with that computed for the Chandra Deep Field South in this work and in previous ones. Nevertheless, the logN-logS computed separately for the four ACIS-I chips reveals that there is a significant excess of sources to the North-North East and a void to the South of the central cluster. Such an asymmetric distribution is confirmed by the two-dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, which excludes ($P \sim 3%$) a uniform distri…
The large supercluster structures obvious in recent galaxy redshift surveys are quantified using an one-dimensional cluster analysis (core sampling) and a three-dimensional cluster analysis based on the minimal spanning tree. The comparison with the LCRS reveals promising stable results. At a mean overdensity of about ten, the supercluster systems form huge wall-like structures comprising about 40% of all galaxies. The overdense clusters have a low mean transverse velocity dispersion of about 400 km/s, i.e. they look quite narrow in redshift space. We performed N-body simulations with large bo…
The nature and extent of the Great Attractor (GA) has been the subject of much debate in the past decade, partly due to the fact that a large fraction of the GA overdensity is hidden by the southern Milky Way. Based on our deep optical galaxy search behind the southern Milky Way and a subsequent redshift survey we discovered that the Norma cluster (ACO 3627) in the GA region is a very massive cluster of galaxies. The cluster is comparable in size, richness and mass to the Coma cluster. It is located at the intersection of two distinct large structures, the Centaurus Wall and the Norma Superclu…
We use large-scale cosmological simulations to estimate the mass-to-light ratio of galaxy systems as a function of scale, and compare the results with observations of galaxies, groups, clusters, and superclusters of galaxies. We find remarkably good agreement between observations and simulations. Specifically, we find that the simulated mass-to-light ratio increases with scale on small scales and flattens to a constant value on large scales, as suggested by observations. We find that while mass typically follows light on large scales, high overdensity regions --- such as rich clusters and supe…
Spectroscopic observations have been carried out for galaxies in the Milky Way with the 1.9 m telescope of the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO). The galaxies were selected from a deep optical galaxy search covering 266<l<296 |b|<10deg. This is in the extension of the Hydra and Antlia clusters and in the approximate direction of the dipole anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Back- ground radiation. The galaxies in the SAAO observing program -- one of the three complementary approaches in mapping the 3D galaxy distribution in the ZOA -- were selected for high central SB and for even …
To investigate the role of feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in driving the evolution of their host galaxies, we have carried out a study of the environments and optical properties of galaxies harboring X-ray luminous AGN in the Cl1604 supercluster at z~0.9. Making use of Chandra, HST/ACS and Keck/DEIMOS observations, we examine the integrated colors, morphologies and spectral properties of nine moderate-luminosity (L_x ~ 10^43 erg s^-1) type 2 Seyferts detected in the Cl1604 complex. We find that the AGN are predominantly hosted by luminous spheroids and/or bulge dominated galaxies w…
We examine the relations linking mass, X-ray temperature and bolometric luminosity for a sample of luminous, relatively relaxed clusters of galaxies observed with the Chandra Observatory, for which independent confirmation of the mass results is available from gravitational lensing studies. Within radii corresponding to a fixed overdensity Delta = 2500 with respect to the critical density at the redshifts of the clusters, the observed temperature profiles, scaled in units of T_2500 and r_2500, exhibit an approximately universal form which rises within r~0.3 r_2500 and then remains approximatel…
Combining XMM-Newton and Chandra data, we have performed a detailed study of Abell 3558. Our analysis shows that its dynamical history is more complicated than previously thought. We have found some traits typical of cool core clusters (surface brightness peaked at the center, peaked metal abundance profile) and others that are more common in merging clusters, like deviations from spherical symmetry in the thermodynamic quantities of the ICM. This last result has been achieved with a new technique for deriving temperature maps from images. We have also detected a cold front and, with the combi…
The first systematic study of the serendipitous X-ray source density around 10 high z (0.24<z<1.2) clusters performed with Chandra is presented. A factor \~2 overdensity has been found in 4 cluster fields. The result is statistically highly significant (at >2sigma per field, and >5sigma overall) only on scale of 8'X8' and peculiar to cluster fields. The blank field fluctuations, i.e. the most sensitive measurements to date of the X-ray cosmic variance on this scale, indicate (1 sigma) variations within ~15-25% around the average value. The first marginal evidence that these overdensities incre…
With the Chandra X-ray Telescope we have detected a zero-redshift OVII He-alpha absorption line along the sight line toward 3C 273. This line detection is highly significant, with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 6.4. We explore two models, which associate this line with (1) the intragroup gas in the Local Group, and (2) the hot halo gas in the vicinity of our Milky Way. In the first model, we find that for a standard beta-model of the gas distribution in the Local Group, the temperature is constrained to 2.3e5 < T < 1.2e6 K and the baryon overdensity is delta_b ~ 100; both results are consist…
The first systematic study of the serendipitous X-ray source density around 10 high z (0.24<z<1.2) clusters has been performed with Chandra. A factor ~2 overdensity has been found in 4 cluster fields, increasing to 11 the number of known source overdensities around high z clusters. The result is statistically highly significant (at >2 sigma per field, and >5 sigma overall) only on scales 8'X8' and peculiar to cluster fields. The blank field fluctuations, i.e. the most sensitive measurements to date of the X-ray cosmic variance on this scale, indicate variations within ~15-25% around the averag…
We provide important new constraints on the nature and redshift distribution of optically faint (R>25) X-ray sources in the Chandra Deep Field South Survey. We show that we can derive accurate photometric redshifts for the spectroscopically unidentified sources thus maximizing the redshift completeness for the whole X-ray sample. Our new redshift distribution for the X-ray source population is in better agreement with that predicted by X-ray background synthesis models; however, we still find an overdensity of low redshift (z<1) sources. The optically faint sources are mainly X-ray absorbed AG…
We report the first results of a spectroscopic survey of galaxies in the core of the Shapley Concentration, the richest nearby supercluster of clusters of galaxies. We have measured 311 new galaxy redshifts in an area of $\sim 4.5$ square degrees centered around the Abell cluster A3558. Considering also the data already available in the literature, the total number of galaxy redshifts in this area amounts to more than 500. On the basis of these data we estimate the mean velocities and the velocity dispersions of the Abell clusters A3556, A3558 and the poor cluster SC 1329 -314. Finally, from a…
We present a new, objectively selected, sample of galaxy overdensities detected in the Hubble Space Telescope Medium Deep Survey. These clusters/groups were found using an automated procedure which involved searching for statistically significant galaxy overdensities. The contrast of the clusters against the field galaxy population is increased when morphological data is used to search around bulge-dominated galaxies. In total, we present 92 overdensities above a probability threshold of 99.5%. We show, via extensive Monte Carlo simulations, that at least 60% of these overdensities are likely …
We present an analysis of deep XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the z=1.05 galaxy cluster XLSSJ022403.9-041328 (hereafter XLSSC 029), detected in the XMM-Newton large scale structure survey. Density and temperature profiles of the X-ray emitting gas were used to perform a hydrostatic mass analysis of the system. This allowed us to measure the total mass and gas fraction in the cluster and define overdensity radii R500 and R2500. The global properties of XLSSC 029 were measured within these radii and compared with those of the local population. The gas mass fraction was found to be consis…
With the superb angular resolution of the Chandra Observatory, it is now possible to detect X-ray point sources, either embedded in galaxy clusters or along the cluster line of sight, which could not be resolved by previous instruments. This now allows studies of source counts in distant cluster fields. A sample of 18 distant (0.25 < z < 1.01) galaxy clusters from the Chandra archive were used to analyze the inner region of clusters of galaxies to check for the presence of any overdensity of X-ray point sources embedded in the gas diffuse emission. We constructed the logN-logS, in both the sof…
We present a detailed analysis of the XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of Abell 2626 focused on the X-ray and radio interactions. Within the region of the radio mini-halo (~70 kpc), there are substructures which are probably produced by the central radio source and the cooling core. We find that there is no obvious correlation between the radio bars and the X-ray image. The morphology of Abell 2626 is more complex than that of the standard X-ray radio bubbles seen in other cool core clusters. Thus, Abell 2626 provides a challenge to models for the cooling flow -- radio source interaction. W…
We present radial mass profiles within 0.3 r_vir for 16 relaxed galaxy groups-poor clusters (kT range 1-3 keV) selected for optimal mass constraints from the Chandra and XMM data archives. After accounting for the mass of hot gas, the resulting mass profiles are described well by a two-component model consisting of dark matter (DM), represented by an NFW model, and stars from the central galaxy. The stellar component is required only for 8 systems, for which reasonable stellar mass-to-light ratios (M/L_K) are obtained, assuming a Kroupa IMF. Modifying the NFW dark matter halo by adiabatic cont…
We present a statistical analysis of the Chandra observation of the source field around the 3C 295 galaxy cluster (z=0.46).
We have studied the spatial clustering of high redshift (z > 1) extremely red objects (EROs) as a function of photometric redshift in the GOODS Southern Field using public data. A remarkable overdensity of extremely red galaxies (I-Ks > 4) is found at an average photometric redshift z=1.10. Nine objects (six are EROs) within 50 arcsec of the brightest infrared galaxy in this overdensity present spectroscopic redshifts in the range 1.094 < z < 1.101 with a line-of-sight velocity dispersion of 433 km/s typical of an Abell richness class R=0 cluster. Other potential members of this cluster, desig…
We report the discovery of a localized overdensity at z~1.6 in the GOODS-South Field, presumably a poor cluster in the process of formation. The three-dimensional galaxy density has been estimated on the basis of well calibrated photometric redshifts from the multiband photometric GOODS-MUSIC catalog using the (2+1)D technique. The density peak is embedded in the larger scale overdensity of galaxies known to exist at z=1.61 in the area. The properties of the member galaxies are compared to those of the surrounding field and we found that the two populations are significantly different supporti…
Multi-fiber spectroscopy has been obtained for 335 galaxies in the field of the double cluster A3128/A3125, using the 2dF multi-fiber positioner on the AAT. A total of 532 objects in the double cluster now have known redshifts. We have also obtained a 20 ks Chandra ACIS-I image of A3128 and radio imaging with the MOST and the ATCA. The spatial-kinematic distribution of redshifts in the field of A3128/A3125, when combined with the Chandra image of A3128, reveals a variety of substructures present in the galaxy distribution and in the hot ICM. The most striking large-scale feature in the galaxy …
We aim to settle the debate regarding the fraction of the Local Group's peculiar velocity that is induced by structures beyond the Great Attractor by calculating the dipole anisotropy of the largest, all-sky, truly X-ray selected cluster sample compiled to date. The sample is the combination of the REFLEX catalog in the southern hemisphere, the eBCS sample in the north, and the CIZA survey in the Galactic plane. The composite REFLEX+eBCS+CIZA sample overcomes many of the problems inherent to previous galaxy and cluster catalogs which limited their effectiveness in determining the origin of the…
We present new follow-up observations of the sub-mm luminous Ly_alpha-emitting object in the SSA22 z=3.09 galaxy overdensity, referred to as `Blob 1' by Steidel et al.(2000). In particular we discuss high resolution Hubble Space Telescope optical imaging, Owens Valley Radio Observatory spectral imaging, Keck spectroscopy, VLA 20cm radio continuum imaging, and Chandra X-ray observations. We also present a more complete analysis of the existing James Clerk Maxwell Telescope sub-mm data. We detect several optical continuum components which may be associated with the core of the submillimeter emit…
We present a detailed analysis of the overdensity of X-ray sources colse to the 3C 295 galaxy cluster (z=0.46) to assess whether it is associated with a filament of the large-scale structure of the Universe. We obtained optical spectra of the optical counterparts of eleven sources associated with the filament, finding that one is at z=0.474. This is a type 1 AGN at 1.5 arcmin from the cluster center. We found three more sources with a redshift in the range 0.37 - 0.53. We extracted the stacked X-ray spectrum of 47 X-ray sources belonging to the putative filament. We found a significant narrow …
We report the discovery of an X-ray luminous galaxy cluster at z =1.11. RDCS J0910+5422 was selected as an X-ray cluster candidate in the ROSAT Deep Cluster Survey on the basis of its spatial extent in a Rosat PSPC image. Deep optical and near-IR imaging reveal a red galaxy overdensity around the peak of the X-ray emission, with a significant excess of objects with J-K and I-K colors typical of elliptical galaxies at z ~ 1.0. Spectroscopic observations at the Keck II telescope secured 9 galaxy redshifts in the range 1.095<z<1.120 yielding a mean cluster redshift of <z>=1.106. Eight of these ga…
