We present a detailed analysis of the overdensity of X-ray sources colse to the 3C 295 galaxy cluster (z=0.46) to assess whether it is associated with a filament of the large-scale structure of the Universe. We obtained optical spectra of the optical counterparts of eleven sources associated with the filament, finding that one is at z=0.474. This is a type 1 AGN at 1.5 arcmin from the cluster center. We found three more sources with a redshift in the range 0.37 - 0.53. We extracted the stacked X-ray spectrum of 47 X-ray sources belonging to the putative filament. We found a significant narrow (at the resolution of the Chandra ACIS-I) line at E ~ 4.4 keV, the energy of the iron Kalpha line at the redshift of the cluster. The detection of this line is confirmed at a confidence level of better than 3sigma and its energy is constrained to be in the range 6.2--6.47 (at a 90% confidence level), excluding an identification with the 6.7 helium-like iron line from the hot cluster ICM at better than 4 sigma. We conclude that the detection of the redshifted line is a strong indication that at least several of the excess sources lie at z ~ 0.46 and that AGNs are efficient tracers of the ``filament'' connected with the central cluster of galaxies.
We present near-infrared spectroscopy of fluorescent molecular hydrogen (H_2) emission from molecular filaments in the reflection nebula NGC 7023. We derive the relative column densities of H_2 rotational-vibrational states from the measured line emission and compare these results with several model photodissociation regions covering a range of densities, incident UV-fields, and excitation mechanisms. Our best-fit models for one filament suggest, but do not require, either a combination of different densities, suggesting clumps of 10^6 cm^{-3} in a 10^4 - 10^5 cm^{-3} filament, or a combinatio…
In Paper 1 of this series we identified an 80 co-moving Mpc filament of candidate Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies at redshift 2.38. In this paper we present spectroscopy of the 37 galaxy candidates. Our spectroscopy reached a surface brightness limit of 5.0E-17 erg/cm^2/s/arcsec^2. Of the 14 candidates down to this limit, 12 were confirmed to be Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies at the filament redshift. We also obtained spectral confirmation for six of the lower surface brightness candidates, all of which also lay at the filament redshift. In addition, we identify a foreground cluster of QSOs at z=…
We present a statistical analysis of the Chandra observation of the source field around the 3C 295 galaxy cluster (z=0.46) aimed at the search for clustering of X-ray sources. Three different methods of analysis, namely a chip by chip logN-logS, a two dimensional Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, and the angular correlation function (ACF) show a strong overdensity of sources in the North-East of the field. In particular, the ACF shows a clear signal on scales of 0.5 - 5 arcmin. This correlation angle is > 2 times higher than that of a sample of 8 ACIS-I field at the 2.5 sigma confidence level. If this …
We report here the results of deep optical spectroscopy of the very extended emission-line region (VEELR) found serendipitously around the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388 in the Virgo cluster using the Subaru Telescope. The H-alpha recession velocities of most of the filaments of the region observed are highly blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The velocity field is complicated, and from the kinematic and morphological points of view, there seem to be several streams of filaments: low velocity (v = -100 km/s) filaments, high velocity (v = -300 km/s) filaments, and a ve…
We present the first calibrated CCD images of the faint supernova remnant G 114.3+0.3 in the emission lines of [OII], [OIII], Halpha+[NII] and [SII]. The deep low ionization CCD images reveal diffuse emission in the south and central areas of the remnant. These are correlated with areas of intense radio emission, while estimates of the [SII]/Halpha ratio suggest that the detected emission originates from shock heated gas. In the medium ionization image of [OIII] we discovered a thin filament in the south matching very well the outer radio contours. This filament is not continuous over its tota…
We present (preliminary) results of our systematic spectroscopic study of (candidate) ultra-compact X-ray binaries. Most candidates are confirmed and we found the first optical spectra of (pure) carbon-oxygen accretion discs.
We report on the filament of ionized gas found at the NE periphery of M87, the second brightest elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. The object lies at 3.16 arcmin (15.7 kpc) projected distance of the nucleus of M87, and it coincides in position with the Eastern radio lobe of M87. Long slit spectroscopy confirmed the gaseus nature of this object, showing Hbeta, [OIII], [OI], [NII], Halpha and [SII] lines, without any underlying continuum. The redshift of the object, V = 1170+-25 km/s, agrees with the velocity of M87 itself (V = 1280 km/s), and with the bulk of the ionized material found nea…
We present a catalogue of 18 new Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) uncovered in the optical regime as filamentary emissions and extended nebulosities on images of the Anglo Australian Observatory/United Kingdom Schmidt Telescope (AAO/UKST) HAlpha survey of the southern Galactic plane. Our follow-up spectral observations confirmed classical optical SNR emission lines for these 18 structures via detection of very strong [SII] at 6717 and 6731A relative to HAlpha ([SII]/HAlpha> 0.5). Morphologically, 10 of these remnants have coherent, extended arc or shell structures, while the remaining object…
We present preliminary results on spectroscopic data of the candidate pre-cataclysmic variable LTT 560. A fit to the flux-calibrated spectrum reveals the temperature of the white-dwarf primary to be T_eff = 7000 - 7500 K, and confirms the result of previous studies on the detection of an M5V secondary star. The analysis of radial velocity data from spectral features attributed to the primary and the secondary star shows evidence for low-level accretion.
The existence of a clumpy, large-scale filamentary structure is at the basis of the current paradigm of cosmic formation and evolution of clusters. The star-formation history of galaxies falling into a cluster is altered as a result of the environmental stresses. We investigate the relation between substructure and properties of the galaxy population in a 30'x30' region centered on the massive merging cluster A2744 at z~0.3. Multi-object spectroscopy at low resolution and BVR photometry are used to detect the presence of substructure through a Dressler-Schectman analysis and the photometric re…
The Monogem Ring is a huge bright soft X-ray enhancement with a diameter of ~ 25$\degr$. This 0.3 kpc distant structure is a peculiar Galactic supernova remnant in that it is obviously visible only in X-rays, due to its expansion into a region of extremely low ambient density: hence, practically no optical emission or a neutral HI shell was expected to be detectable. - Here we report on the discovery of a very faint arc-like nebula on a POSS II R film copy, at the south-eastern borders of the MR. Spectroscopy revealed this filament to have a very large [SII]$λ$ 6716+6731/Halpha ratio of up to …
In the deep narrow band image of the Coma Cluster taken with Suprime-Cam of the Subaru telescope, we found an extremely long and narrow (~ 60 kpc x 2 kpc) Halpha emitting region associated with a poststarburst galaxy (D100). Follow up spectroscopy shows that the region has the same redshift as D100. The surface brightness of the region is typically 25 mag(AB) arcsec^-2 in Halpha, which corresponds to 0.5--4x10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2. We set two possible explanations for the origin of the region; gas stripped off from a merged dwarf, or gas stripped off from D100 by ram pressure. Either s…
We present an analysis of low-resolution infrared spectra for 25 brown dwarf candidates in the NGC 1333 molecular cloud. Candidates were chosen on the basis of their association with the high column density cloud core, and near-infrared fluxes and colors. We compare the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects with a grid of dwarf, subgiant, and giant standards to determine spectral types which are independent of reddening. These data are used to derive effective temperatures and bolometric luminosities which, when combined with theoretical tracks and isochrones for pre-…
We present Gemini near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and spectroscopy of a planetary mass candidate companion to 1RXS J160929.1-210524, a roughly solar-mass member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. The object, separated by 2.22" or 330 AU at ~150 pc, has infrared colors and spectra suggesting a temperature of 1800(-100/+200) K, and spectral type of L4(-2/+1). The H- and K-band spectra provide clear evidence of low surface gravity, and thus youth. Based on the widely used DUSTY models, we infer a mass of 8(-2/+4)Mjupiter. If gravitationally bound, this would be the lowest mass com…
We present an analysis of low resolution infrared spectra for 20 brown dwarf candidates in the core of the $ρ$ Ophiuchi molecular cloud. Fifteen of the sources display absorption-line spectra characteristic of late-type stars. By comparing the depths of water vapor absorption bands in our candidate objects with a grid of M dwarf standards, we derive spectral types which are independent of reddening. Optical spectroscopy of one brown dwarf candidate confirms the spectral type derived from the water bands. Combining their spectral types with published near-infrared photometry, effective temperat…
The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has obtained images in five broad-band colors for several hundred square degrees. We present color-color diagrams for stellar objects, and demonstrate that quasars are easily distinguished from stars by their distinctive colors. Follow-up spectroscopy in less than ten nights of telescope time has yielded 22 new quasars, 9 of them at $z> 3.65$, and one with $z = 4.75$, the second highest-redshift quasar yet known. Roughly 80% of the high-redshift quasar candidates selected by color indeed turn out to be high-redshift quasars.
The cluster of galaxies A1795 hosts a 46 kpc-long filament at its core, which is clearly visible in the light of H-alpha and X-ray emission. We present optical slit spectroscopy and deeper Chandra X-ray data of the filament. The optical spectra reveal that the the bulk of the filament is quiescent (with sigma < 130 km/s), although considerable velocity structure is apparent around the powerful radio source in the central cluster galaxy, where a direct interaction is occurring between the radio plasma and the surrounding intracluster medium. The filament contains a clump of UV/blue continuum ha…
We present an analysis of candidate members of the Eta Cha and MBM 12A young associations. For an area of 0.7 deg^2 toward Eta Cha, we have performed a search for members of the association by combining JHK_s photometry from 2MASS and i photometry from DENIS with followup optical spectroscopy at Magellan Observatory. We report the discovery of three new members with spectral types of M5.25-M5.75, corresponding to masses of 0.13-0.08 M_sun by theoretical evolutionary models. Two and three of these members were found independently by Lyo and coworkers and Song and coworkers, respectively. Meanwh…
PKS 1138-262 is a massive radio galaxy at z = 2.16 surrounded by overdensities of Lya emitters, Ha emitters, EROs and X-ray emitters. Numerous lines of evidence exist that it is located in a forming cluster. We report on Keck spectroscopy of candidate members of this protocluster, including nine of the 18 X-ray sources detected by Pentericci et al. (2002) in this field. Two of these X-ray sources (not counting PKS 1138-262 itself) were previously confirmed to be members of the protocluster; we have discovered that an additional two (both AGN) are members of a filamentary structure, at least 3.…
Significant fraction of barred galaxies hosts secondary bar-like structures on optical and NIR images. The circumnuclear dynamics of double-barred objects are still not well understood, observational data concerning kinematics are incomplete and inconsistent. In order to compare the simulations results with observations, we have started new spectroscopic studying of stellar kinematics in lenticular galaxies from Peter Erwin's catalog of secondary bars. We present first results concerning their stellar kinematics based on the observations performed with the integral-field spectrograph MPFS at t…
We report the detection of a 4/h70 Mpc long large-scale filament leading into the massive galaxy cluster MACS J0717.5+3745. The extent of this object well beyond the cluster's nominal virial radius (~2.3 Mpc) rules out prior interaction between its constituent galaxies and the cluster and makes it a prime candidate for a genuine filament as opposed to a merger remnant or a double cluster. The structure was discovered as a pronounced overdensity of galaxies selected to have V-R colors close to the cluster red sequence. Extensive spectroscopic follow-up of over 300 of these galaxies in a region …
We report first results from our ground-based infrared imaging search for sub-stellar companions (brown dwarfs and giant planets) of young (up to 100 Myrs) nearby (up to 100 pc) stars, where companions should be well separated from the central stars and still relatively bright due to ongoing accretion and/or contraction. Our observations are performed mainly with SOFI and SHARP at the ESO 3.5m NTT on La Silla (imaging) and with ISAAC at the ESO 8.2m Antu (VLT-UT1) on Cerro Paranal (imaging and spectroscopy), all in the H- and K-bands. Here, we present new companion candidates around three T Ta…
We present a weak lensing analysis of the double cluster system Abell 222 and Abell 223. The lensing reconstruction shows evidence for a possible dark matter filament connecting both clusters. The case for a filamentary connection between A 222/223 is supported by an analysis of the galaxy density and X-ray emission between the clusters. Using the results of N-body simulations, we try to develop a criterion that separates this system into cluster and filament regions. The aim is to find a technique that allows the quantification of the significance of (weak lensing) filament candidates in clos…
We have used the Low-Resolution Imaging Spectrograph on the Keck II telescope to observe the brown dwarf candidate D04 (Hawkins et al, 1998). The spectrum matches that of a spectral-type M7 dwarf, implying a photospheric temperature of $\approx 2600$K. This is consistent with the available (R-I)$_C$ and (I-K) colours. If the parallax measured by Hawkins et al is correct, then the implication is that D04 has a radius of $\sim 0.035 R_\odot$, or one-third that of Jupiter. This contradicts the predictions made by current stellar models that electron degeneracy leads to nearly constant radii for s…
We report the results of the first multi-object spectroscopic observations at the Danish 1.54m telescope at La Silla, Chile. Observations of five cluster candidates from the ESO Imaging Survey Cluster Candidate Catalog are described. From these observations we confirm the reality of the five clusters with measured redshifts of 0.11<=z<=0.35. We estimate velocity dispersions in the range 294-621km/s indicating rather poor clusters. This, and the measured cluster redshifts are consistent with the results of the matched filter procedure applied to produce the Cluster Candidate Catalog.
Deep, wide-field, continuum-subtracted, images in the light of the Halpha+[NII] 6548 & 6584 A and [O III] 5007 A nebular emission lines have been obtained of the environment of the Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) star P Cygni. A previously discovered, receding, nebulous filament along PA 50 deg has now been shown to extend up to 12' from this star. Furthermore, in the light of [O III] 5007 A, a southern counterpart is discovered as well as irregular filaments on the opposite side of P Cygni. Line profiles from this nebulous complex indicate that this extended nebulosity is similar to that associa…
We present the results of the first spectroscopic observations of two planetary nebula (PN) candidates in the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC10. Using several spectral classification diagrams we show that the brightest PN candidate (PN7) is not a PN, but rather a compact HII region consisting of two components with low electron number densities. After the rejection of this PN candidate, the IC10 planetary nebula luminosity function cutoff becomes very close to the standard value. With the compiled spectroscopic data for a large number of extragalactic PNe, we analyse a series of diagnost…
We present spectra of 36 nearby star candidates and 3 red giant candidates, identified in the DENIS database by Phan-Bao et al. (2003). 32 of the dwarf candidates are indeed nearby red dwarfs, with spectral types from M5.5 to M8.5. Out of 11 targets with low proper motion (mu < 0.1$ arc-sec/yr) but a Reduced Proper Motion above an inclusive threshold, 9 are red dwarfs. The 4 contaminants are all reddened F-K main sequence stars, and they could have been eliminated by checking for some well known high latitude molecular clouds. These stars might be of interest as probes of interstellar absorpti…
We present spectra of optical filaments associated with the X-ray knot D in the Vela supernova remnant. It has been suggested that Knot D is formed by a bullet of supernova ejecta, that it is a break-out of the shock front of the Vela SNR, and also that it is an outflow from the recently discovered remnant RXJ0852.0-4622. We find that Knot D is a bow shock propagating into an interstellar cloud with normal abundances and typical cloud densities (n_H ~ 4-11 cm^-3). Optical longslit spectra show that the [S II] 6716,6731 to Halpha line ratio is greater than unity, proving that the optical filame…
We present high-resolution spectroscopy of the neutron star/low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) 4U 1850-087 and 4U 0513-40 as part of our continuing study of known and candidate ultracompact binaries. The LMXB 4U 1850-087 is one of four systems in which we had previously inferred an unusual Ne/O ratio in the absorption along the line of sight, most likely from material local to the binaries. However, our recent Chandra X-ray Observatory LETGS spectrum of 4U 1850-087 finds a Ne/O ratio by number of 0.22+/-0.05, smaller than previously measured and consistent with the expected interstellar value. We…
We present optical spectroscopy of several (candidate) ultra-compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) obtained with the ESO VLT and Gemini-North telescopes. In only one of five observed UCXB candidates did we find evidence for H in its spectrum (4U 1556-60). For XB 1905+00 the optical counterpart is not detected. For the known UCXBs 4U 1626-67 and XB 1916-05 we find spectra consistent with a C/O and a He/N accretion disc respectively, the latter is the first optical spectrum of a He-rich donor in an UCXB. Interestingly, the C/O spectrum of 4U 1626-67 shows both similarities as well as marked differences…
We present near-infrared (1.15-2.50 microns) medium-resolution (R = 1700) spectroscopy of a sample of 23 brown dwarf candidates in the young Upper Sco association. We confirm membership of 21 brown dwarfs based on their spectral shape, comparison with field dwarfs, and presence of weak gravity-sensitive features. Their spectral types range from M8 to L2 with an uncertainty of a subclass, suggesting effective temperatures between 2700 and 1800 K with an uncertainty up to 300 K and masses in the 30-8 Mjup range. Among the non-members, we have uncovered a field L2 dwarf at a distance of 120-140 p…
We report optical spectroscopic observations of a sample of 6 low-galactic latitude microquasar candidates selected by cross-identification of X-ray and radio point source catalogs for |b|<5 degrees. Two objects resulted to be of clear extragalactic origin, as an obvious cosmologic redshift has been measured from their emission lines. For the rest, none exhibits a clear stellar-like spectrum as would be expected for genuine Galactic microquasars. Their featureless spectra are consistent with being extragalactic in origin although two of them could be also highly reddened stars. The apparent no…
We present integral field spectroscopy of the LBV candidate stars B416 and v532 in the local group galaxy M33. B416 is surrounded by an elongated ring-like nebula, which has a projected radius of 20x30 pc. From the datacube we create ionization and radial velocity maps of the nebula. The excitation of the gas decreases towards the outer part of the ring, while the inner part of the nebula is filled with a more excited gas. In the EW direction the ring is seen to expand with a maximum projected velocity amplitude of about 40 km/s. The eastern part approaches the observer. We estimate the nebula…
